The Mandate
Beginning December 27th, New York City will be the first in America to implement a vaccine mandate for all private sector employees. The sweeping measure, which also includes children ages 5 and older, comes from the office of outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio.  
The incoming mayor Eric Adams has expressed support for previous vaccine mandates, so it’s likely he will allow it to stand moving forward. In addition to mandating COVID vaccines for all private sector workers, the mayor is also requiring proof of vaccination for all indoor dining, fitness, and entertainment venues for children ages 5 to 11. 
Remember: President Joe Biden’s mandate applies to larger companies with over 100 employees, while de Blasio’s mandate will apply to all private businesses, regardless of size. 
Potential Pushback
Based on recent court rulings, there is reason to believe these types of mandates will not stand in the long term. If they are overturned, the ensuing legal battle will largely center on whether those who were fired for not getting vaccinated will be able to take legal action against their former employers. 
There’s also a bill in the Senate that would outlaw vaccine mandates nationwide. It has full Republican support, as well as the support of Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, but is not expected to pass in the House. 
Around The World
Only a few countries require children to get the COVID vaccine, most notably Cuba and Costa Rica. China also rolled out a plan in October pushing for every child in the country to be vaccinated by New Years. Chinese officials are calling their children “little inoculated warriors” and say they’re the key to helping the country achieve herd immunity. 
The Chinese Communist Party says the vaccines aren’t mandatory, but there have been numerous reports of parents saying the government has threatened or coerced them into vaccinating their children.

Russia
According to the latest reports from U.S. intelligence, Russia is in the process of planning a military offensive against Ukraine, involving 175,000 troops. This attack could be carried out as early as next year.
Russia has been moving troops to the border with Ukraine while simultaneously demanding the U.S. guarantee that Ukraine won’t join NATO, and that NATO will not engage in the region.
Biden Administration
President Joe Biden is scheduled to hold a virtual meeting with Vladimir Putin today.
Biden said he was putting together a set of initiatives which he claimed would make it difficult for a Russian military attack to be carried out, but he has yet to clarify what he meant.
According to Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the U.S. has threatened to impose new sanctions. “If the new &#8216;sanctions from hell&#8217; come, we will respond. We can&#8217;t fail to respond,” he said.
Why Ukraine?
Russian leaders have viewed Ukraine and Ukrainians as “one people” with Russians, and Ukraine represents a Western-backed state as part of an attempt to divide and conquer the post-Soviet bloc.
Ukraine, on the other hand, got rid of a president in 2014 who was friendly to Russia, which is just one part of a broader indication that those who live in Ukraine are far friendlier to the west than Putin and Russia across the border.
Many in Russia consider the so-called “loss” of Ukraine a trauma, but Ukrainians generally view this appeal to a supposed shared history as more of a facade to hide territorial ambitions.

The Topline: While the investigation continues into how a live round came to be on the set of Alec Baldwin’s movie, Rust, the actor gave a controversial interview to the surprise of many legal experts.

The Interview
In an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Baldwin said he didn’t pull the trigger before the accidental discharge that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was walking him through a rehearsal, instructing him on how she wanted him to point the gun.
Baldwin told Stephanopoulos he had cocked the revolver in Hutchins’ direction, at her instruction in order to set up the scene, but insisted that he never pulled the trigger. He says the gun went off when he let the hammer down, meaning it was a misfire.
In a recent podcast appearance, actor George Clooney said he always personally checks any gun he’s holding to make sure it’s not loaded. Stephanopoulos asked Baldwin about Clooney’s comments, and Baldwin’s response was, “good for him,” before adding, “there were a lot of people who felt it necessary to contribute some comment to the situation, which really didn&#8217;t help the situation. At all.” 
Legal Experts React
Nearly every legal expert who has commented on the case has said it wasn’t a good idea for Baldwin to give the interview while the investigation is ongoing, but they specifically pointed to one comment as a risky move. 
For example, Rachel Fiset, managing partner of a firm in Los Angeles, told Fox News, “His admissions that someone is to be blamed – but not him – could also potentially be used against him later in either a civil or criminal case if it is determined that he had some responsibility for set safety as a major producer of the film.&#8221;
A former prosecutor told Newsweek that because Baldwin has admitted his memory of the incident is murky, “That&#8217;s a strong reason not to make any statements, much less go on national television.”

1) Ghislaine Maxwell Trial Continues
The Topline: Today, the second week of the trial of Ghislaine Maxwell begins. Maxwell is the former girlfriend of billionaire and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, who now faces charges of sex trafficking minors.

The Trial
The trial has made headlines worldwide due to allegations that Epstein and Maxwell acted together to procure young victims for rich and famous friends, including Prince Andrew. Epstein&#8217;s extensive roster of friends and guests who allegedly travelled aboard his infamous “Lolita Express” jet includes dozens of Hollywood elites and at least two former U.S. presidents. 
In the first week of the trial, one of the state’s key witnesses, a woman who has accused Maxwell of trafficking her for Epstein, and who has also claimed that Maxwell personally sexually abused her, testified. “Jane,” which is the pseudonym she is using in court, took the stand on Tuesday and described how she was recruited by Epstein and Maxwell when she was 13 or 14 years old at a performing arts summer camp in Michigan. Epstein and Maxwell started inviting her to Epstein’s house in Palm Beach, she said. 
She said they groomed her, giving her impoverished family money, paying for her voice lessons, and taking her on shopping trips. They took her on Epstein’s private jet to his other houses, and Maxwell discussed sexual topics with her. Eventually, Epstein began sexually abusing her, she said, and soon afterwards, Maxwell and Epstein allegedly took her to Epstein’s bedroom and abused her together, still when she was just 14.
Maxwell is charged with eight counts related to the sex trafficking of minors between 1994 and 2004, including sex trafficking of a minor, enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, and transporting a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. A separate, later trial will consider two perjury charges against her. If convicted, she could face up to 80 years in prison
The Defense: Maxwell’s lawyers are primarily arguing that the women accusing Maxwell are motivated by money and have “contaminated” memories of their abuse. The defense even went after “Jane” over her acting career, asking her on the stand whether she can “cry on command.”

2) ‘Zero-Bail’ Policies Precede California Crime Wave
The Topline: Last week, Los Angeles police announced they’d arrested 14 people in connection with a string of “smash and grab” robberies, but within hours of being caught, all 14 suspects had already been released, leaving many Californians outraged.

‘Smash And Grab’ Theft
California cities have been experiencing a spate of what officials call “smash and grab” robberies, where a large group of usually armed people rush into a store and overwhelm staff or security, smashing display cases and grabbing items before running to getaway cars. Sometimes these incidents turn fatal; one security guard was murdered last week during one such robbery. Across one ten day period at the end of November, stores in LA were struck 11 times, resulting in almost half a million dollars worth of property damage and stolen goods. 
The LAPD announced they’d caught 14 people in connection with those crimes, but within hours of being detained, they were all released due in part to California’s new “zero-bail policy” which means those charged with non-violent felonies and misdemeanors are released while waiting for their trial, without having to pay any bail.  
The Policies
In March, amid nationwide Black Lives Matter protests, the California Supreme Court ruled that when setting bail rates, judges in the state must consider a suspect’s financial background and ability to pay the bail. Supporters of measures like this say it’s a way to bring equity to the criminal justice system and prevent the wealthy from being the only ones who can pay bail. Those who oppose them say this is no time to be lenient on criminals as cities nationwide are seeing record increases in violent crime and homicide. They also point to cases where offenders have been released on low or zero bail and committed the same crimes repeatedly.
Examples
Weeks before the Waukesha parade, the driver in the attack had been released on $1,000 bail after running a woman over with his car.
In a case in California, a man was let go without paying bail and arrested a month later for raping a woman. In another case, a man was arrested 13 times in 12 weeks. He stole over a dozen cars but was continually released. In another example, a man was released with zero bail after being charged with stealing a car, and he skipped his court date and murdered a 61-year-old woman and her dogs. 
Pushback: Some on the Left are beginning to reject the policies. The Democratic mayor of San Jose was outraged after two murder suspects were released from jail in his city. He tweeted about the bail policies saying, “The pendulum has swung too far, and it’s our neighborhoods that endure the most crime that suffer as a result.”

3) NYC To Allow Non-Citizens Some Voting Rights
The Topline: New York City will soon allow non-citizen voting in local elections. The decision comes after decades of progressive activism and efforts to expand voting to new groups.  
The Bill
New York City will soon be the largest city in the country to allow non-citizens to register with a political party and vote in municipal elections. However, non-citizens will still be restricted from voting in state or federal elections, meaning they can vote for city council, but not for governor or president. 
The measure hasn’t passed yet, but it’s expected to be approved by a veto-proof majority on December 9th.
The current language of the bill says non-citizens can vote if they are current green card holders or have the right to work in the U.S. According to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/23/nyregion/noncitizen-voting-rights-nyc.html">The New York Times</a>, this applies to around 800,000 non-citizen residents. In terms of identification requirements, currently New York doesn’t require ID to vote, but they do require I.D. for first-time voter registration.  
Political Reaction
Outgoing Mayor Bill De Blasio has opposed the measure and questioned whether the city council has the legal authority to make this move without state approval. He has indicated that allowing non-citizens to vote in municipal elections might undermine the “value of citizenship” and reduce the incentive for non-citizens to pursue full citizenship. Other progressives, however, say non-citizens pay taxes and utilize public services, so they should have a stake in how those services are run. 
Newly elected mayor Eric Adams, who is seen as a more moderate democrat, is in favor of the idea.
The New York City GOP has fiercely opposed non-citizen voting, claiming it waters down the votes of legal citizens. They also warn how the trend toward non-citizen voting won’t stop with New York City, or with municipal elections, and point out how local issues should not be left up to short-term residents.
Other Cities
Areas of Maryland and Vermont have already allowed non-citizens some municipal voting rights, and in San Francisco, non-citizens are allowed to vote in school board elections. Communities in California, Maine, Illinois and Massachusetts are all looking at similar measures.
Some states are moving in the opposite direction, however, fortifying voting rights for citizens only. Last year, Alabama, Colorado and Florida passed ballot legislation saying only U.S. citizens could vote in their elections. Arizona and North Dakota already had similar laws.

Background
On November 2nd, female tennis pro Peng Shaui posted on Chinese social media that a former Vice Premier of the Chinese Communist Party sexually assaulted her three years ago following a round of tennis, while his wife allegedly guarded the door. Peng’s post was quickly deleted 30 and her account was blocked to searchers.
Afterwards, she wasn’t heard from or seen in public for days, which raised concern over her safety, including from fellow tennis stars who posted to social media raising the alarm over her whereabouts. 
On November 20th, videos of Peng were published by Chinese state media, which showed her eating at a restaurant and attending a youth tennis tournament in Beijing. She later had a call with Thomas Bach, head of the International Olympics Committee, in which Peng said she was “safe and well.” 
Despite her assurances, it was widely believed that she was being pressured by the Communist Party to say she wasn’t in danger.
WTA Announcement
Following the IOC’s call with Peng, Chairman and CEO of the WTA Steve Simon said the video “does not change our call for a full, fair and transparent investigation, without censorship, into her allegation of sexual assault.”
In the past few weeks, Simon has stated the WTA is willing to to pull business out of China if her accusations of sexual assault are not investigated and “until we have a chance to speak with [her] directly.”  
On Tuesday, he suspended all WTA tournaments in China, including in Hong Kong, which is significant because the Winter Olympics are scheduled to begin in Beijing on February 4th. 
On Wednesday, the IOC said they held a second call with Peng offering their support, and they reported she was &#8220;safe and well given the difficult situation she is in.&#8221; But at this point, the WTA isn’t taking anyone’s word until they speak to Peng directly. 
Big Picture
This move is largely unprecedented. American sports leagues have been reluctant to stand up to the Chinese government in the past, largely due to the money they stand to lose.
Over the past month, Boston Celtics player Enes Kanter has been outspoken about freedom in Hong Kong, Tibet, and Taiwan, and now Celtics games have been dropped from streaming platforms in China.

2) China Expands Surveillance System
The Topline: Amid continued concerns about China’s oppressive tactics, the communist regime is reportedly projected to have one surveillance camera for every two people in the country by 2022.
‘Traffic Light’ System
China will use a “traffic-light” system in its efforts to monitor journalists and “other people of concern.”
According to documents viewed by BBC News, the system puts journalists in one province into one of three categories: green, yellow, and red. According to the documents, those put in the “red” category would be “dealt with accordingly.” Yellow means people of general concern, and green means journalists who “aren’t harmful.”
The “traffic light” system would trigger alerts the moment journalists in the red or yellow category book travel in the Henan province.
Foreign students and migrants are also being monitored, with this technology including facial-recognition connected to thousands of cameras, linked to multiple databases of people already being tracked.
Data
Those designing the system are attempting to obtain massive amounts of information, including cell phone data, social media information, vehicle details, hotel stays, travel tickets, property, and all photos from existing databases.
The system is also reportedly expected to be able to identify people even if their faces are partially covered by glasses or masks.
Last year, reports stated the Chinese company Huawei had tested artificial intelligence software with the ability to recognize Uighur Muslims and alert law enforcement based solely on their racial identity.

3) NYC Creates Supervised Injection Sites
The Topline: New York City will be the first city in the U.S. to provide drug addicts with “injection sites.”
The Details
New York City is becoming the first city in the nation to offer supervised injection sites, rather than handing out clean needles to drug users. Other major U.S. cities, such as Philadelphia and San Francisco, appear to be moving toward supervised injection, but haven’t opened sites yet.
As reported by the National Center for Health Statistics, over 100,000 people died from overdoses between April 2020 and April 2021 — an increase of nearly 30% over the previous 12-month period. 
In New York City, more than 2,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2020 – the highest number recorded in 20 years when the city began recording overdose deaths. In the first three months of 2021, New York City had almost 600 overdose deaths.
Facilities 
The facilities will be run by two non-profits who have merged to form OnPoint NYC. The city, and therefore taxpayers, provide funding to those nonprofits.
It&#8217;s not clear whether this option will be appealing to drug users. There are reportedly bathroom stalls for people to use drugs, and staff will enter those bathrooms if the users are inside for over 15 minutes. They’re then “encouraged” to sit in a waiting room in case they overdose.
Pushback
There hasn’t been considerable pushback from the Democrat-run state legislature or the White House. 
Under federal law, it is illegal to operate a building that allows people to use illegal drugs. While the Biden administration hasn’t endorsed supervised injection sites, it hasn’t spoken out against them either. Earlier this year, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris released a statement saying they were committed to reducing overdose deaths. They did not specifically mention supervised injection sites but they listed “evidence-based treatment… and harm reduction efforts.”

The Arguments
Solicitor General Scott Stewart defended the Mississippi pro-life law which outlaws abortion after 15 weeks, arguing that each state should be able to decide its own abortion laws. The Supreme Court accepted this case to answer the question of whether all pre-viability bans on abortion are unconstitutional.
Julie Rikelman, the senior director for the center for reproductive rights, who is arguing on behalf of Jackson Women’s Health, <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/oral_arguments/argument_transcripts/2021/19-1392_gfbi.pdf">addressed</a> Judge Kavanaugh’s concern that the court should remain neutral, saying, “The constitution provides a guarantee of liberty. The court has interpreted that liberty to include making decisions related to childbearing, marriage and family.”
If the precedent set by Roe. v. Wade is overturned, states would be free to make their own laws regarding abortion. 
The justices will cast their tentative votes within the next few days, but won’t reveal their final decision until June.

2) Biden’s Vaccine Mandates Suffer Court Setbacks
The Topline: A series of court rulings have dealt President Biden’s sweeping vaccine mandates major setbacks.

Rulings
The rulings come as several states and businesses, including The Daily Wire, have filed lawsuits against the administration condemning the mandates as unconstitutional. 
The Biden administration issued several different mandates relating to vaccines. The first was a federal employee mandate, which the Biden administration has put on hold until after the holidays. Another is the federal contractor mandate, which recently was enjoined by a federal court out of Kentucky. 
An additional mandate related to healthcare workers was also recently enjoined by a federal court in St. Louis.
In each of these cases, the courts have said the Biden administration overshot it&#8217;s authority under the relevant statutes and questioned whether the agencies had authority to implement the rules in the first place. 
The OSHA mandate, which relates to private employers, has already been stayed by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and put on hold. It is now under challenge in a consolidated proceeding in the Sixth Circuit.

Cuomo
CNN suspended primetime host Chris Cuomo indefinitely on Tuesday after new details emerged exposing the role he played in helping his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, fight charges of sexual harassment and assault. 
Although Cuomo had initially downplayed the role he played in his brother’s defense, new documents released by the New York Attorney General’s office show the full extent of his involvement. 
Chris Cuomo faced a sexual harassment allegation of his own from an ABC executive who said he groped her at a party. Critics have since speculated CNN didn’t take action on any scandals sooner because his show was the highest rated program on the network. 
Background
Over the spring and summer, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was accused by multiple women of sexual assault and harassment. When those allegations first came out, Chris Cuomo, Andrew’s brother, claimed on his CNN show he would not be covering the case because he wouldn’t be able to do so objectively. 
In May, it was revealed he had taken part in calls with Governor Cuomo and his top advisers as they planned out a response to the scandal. At the time, the full extent of his involvement was not yet known, and CNN said his conduct was “inappropriate” but chose not to punish him. A few months later, as rumors continued to circulate about his involvement, he went on air with a vehement denial. 
New Revelations
On Monday, the New York Attorney General’s office released new information about their investigation into Governor Cuomo with overwhelming evidence showing Chris Cuomo was more involved than he initially claimed. 
In March, Cuomo’s top adviser, Melissa DeRosa, emailed him saying “rumor going around 1 to 2 more people coming out tomorrow, can you check your sources,” to which he replied “On it.” He also looked into the background of one accuser who said Governor Cuomo kissed her against her will at a wedding. He emailed DeRosa again saying, “I have a lead on wedding girl.”
According to the Attorney General’s office, Chris Cuomo admitted in testimony he would reach out to fellow reporters and insider sources for information about women who’d already made accusations against his brother, as well as information on those who were about to come forward with accusations.

1) Jussie Smollett Trial Begins
The Topline: The trial of Jussie Smollett began this week after the actor was accused of perpetrating a hoax when he claimed he was the victim of a hate crime in 2019.

The Case
In 2019, Jussie Smollett was a main character on the hit Fox show “Empire” and had high-profile roles in several movies like Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant.” 
In January of 2019, he claimed two white men in ski masks beat him up around 2a.m. when he was getting a sandwich in Chicago. He said they called him racial and homophobic slurs and told him, “This is MAGA country.” He also claimed they poured an unknown substance on him and put a noose around his neck.
He then called the police and filed a report. 
At the time, the alleged incident sparked nationwide outrage. Kamala Harris <a href="https://twitter.com/KamalaHarris/status/1090361495119187969?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1090361495119187969%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fpolitics%2Fflashback-kamala-harris-jussie-smollett-an-attempted-modern-day-lynching">called</a> it a “modern day lynching,” Nancy Pelosi said it was an “affront to our humanity,” and Donald Trump <a href="https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/31/trump-condemns-attack-jussie-smollett-1140398">condemned</a> it as “horrible.”
In the following weeks, it was revealed that Smollett allegedly paid two Nigerian brothers $3,500 to stage the attack. Later, surveillance video emerged that appeared to show Smollett planning out the attack at the scene of the alleged crime in the days before the incident.
He’s now standing trial for six counts of felony disorderly conduct connected to those false reports.
Potential Motive
Initially, there was speculation that his act was a publicity stunt. The brothers told police Smollett hired them to stage the attack in order to raise his media profile so he could negotiate a higher paycheck at Empire. He was reportedly earning $65,000 per episode at the time. 
However, prosecutors in the trial are now describing an additional motive.
About a month before the attack, Smollett allegedly received an anonymous letter while on set, which included a homophobic slur, a drawing of a stick figure hanging from a tree, and the word “MAGA” spelled out by newspaper clippings. Prosecutors say Smollett was so frustrated by the lack of response he got after receiving the letter that he staged a hoax to drum up sympathy.
Controversy Surrounding The Case
The Cook County State Attorney, Kim Foxx, initially dropped all 17 of the original charges against Smollett in March 2019. Many accused Foxx of having a conflict of interest, especially after it was discovered she’d been communicating with Smollett’s family. 
There were also allegations that her office tried to get the Smollett records sealed so the press wouldn’t be able to report on her role in the case.
Eventually, a special prosecutor said he found “substantial abuses of discretion and operational failures” in her office, and convened a grand jury who recommended reinstating a six-count indictment against Smollett. 
The Trial
Smollett has claimed he’s innocent, and continues to do so. During opening statements, his defense attorney claimed the two brothers set Smollett up because they “did not like him as a person.” 
Smollett’s defense has tried to cast doubt on the testimony of the two brothers, and has sought to undermine the perception Smollett was seeking attention.
On the second day of the trial, prosecutors questioned the lead investigator, who testified that after putting in 3,000 man hours on investigation and reviewing surveillance video, he’s in no doubt Smollett perpetrated a hoax.
The brothers will reportedly be the prosecution’s star witnesses.

The Case
Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is a case concerning a 2018 Mississippi law which bans most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Currently, the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, and other subsequent rulings, such as Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, hold that states essentially have to allow a woman to be able to have an abortion up to the point of viability, or when the baby can survive on its own. Most states hold this mark at around 20 to 24 weeks.
Originally, Mississippi <a href="https://www.scotusblog.com/2021/11/roe-v-wade-hangs-in-balance-as-reshaped-court-prepares-to-hear-biggest-abortion-case-in-decades/">said</a> in its petition the questions presented to the Court do not require them to overturn Roe or Casey. In its brief in July, however, the state<a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/19/19-1392/184703/20210722161332385_19-1392BriefForPetitioners.pdf"> wrote</a> “Roe and Casey are egregiously wrong” and said the Court should overrule those decisions.
When the Supreme Court agreed to hear the Mississippi case, it said it would consider the <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/qp/19-01392qp.pdf">question</a> of “Whether all pre-viability prohibitions on elective abortions are unconstitutional,” which means they could rule that states can make their own laws regarding abortion again — even possibly banning it up to the point of conception. 
Key Point: There are at least 21 <a href="https://www.guttmacher.org/article/2021/10/26-states-are-certain-or-likely-ban-abortion-without-roe-heres-which-ones-and-why">states</a> with pro-life laws or constitutional amendments which would make almost all abortions in their states illegal if Roe is overturned. 
The Court
Justices Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan have <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-11-29/supreme-court-will-decide-abortion-rights-fate-here-s-where-the-justices-stand">supported</a> abortion in the past. The newer justices including Justice Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Coney Barrett are more conservative, and how they rule in this case will offer a more clarifying look at their stances. 
Chief Justice John Roberts is difficult to predict, as is Justice Alito, although he has seemed to lean towards pro-life verdicts in the past. 
Justice Thomas is the most open regarding his stance against Roe. In a 2020 dissenting opinion, he <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/19pdf/18-1323_c07d.pdf">wrote</a>, “Our abortion precedents are grievously wrong and should be overruled.”
He went on to write, “The Constitution does not constrain the States’ ability to regulate or even prohibit abortion. This Court created the right to abortion based on an amorphous, unwritten right to privacy…”

3) New Book Details Hunter Biden Laptop Scandal
The Topline: Miranda Devine’s new book, Laptop From Hell, examined the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop, and claims they offer proof that President Joe Biden has been financially compromised by foreign powers.

Hunter Biden
Devine’s new book portrays President Joe Biden as the mastermind and main beneficiary of corrupt global business deals. Devine says Biden would set up deals with domestic and foreign interests who wanted something from him. They would in turn hire Hunter Biden, who would help finance his family’s lavish lifestyle. 
Hunter’s most famous deal with Ukrainian energy company Burisma netted him $83,000 a month, but his most lucrative deal came from the China Energy Fund Committee, which is part of the Chinese government’s imperialist Belt and Road initiative seeking to extend Chinese Communist influence around the world. Records on his laptop revealed Hunter made <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-hunter-bidens-allegedly-lucrative-arrangement-with-china-energy-fund-committee">$6 million</a> from the deal. 
President Biden’s Alleged Role
In some cases, President Biden allegedly met with Hunter’s business partners. Although he initially officially denied meeting them, records on the laptop show Biden met with the owner of Burisma in Washington, D.C., in 2015, and possibly with others. 
In 2013, then-Vice President Biden brought Hunter on an official state visit to China, where Hunter worked out his first multimillion-dollar deal. Devine said this represented a quid-pro-quo in Chinese culture.
Other Allegations
While trying to cement a deal with the Chinese, a document on the laptop allegedly says Hunter Biden had influence with leaders of the Democratic Party on both coasts. He names Kamala Harris; Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA); as well as current Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom. 
The book also alleges that Hunter’s brother Jim Biden reportedly once told his business partners, “Don’t worry about investors. We’ve got people all around the world who want to invest in Joe Biden.” 
Receipts on the laptop also allegedly show Hunter Biden appeared to pay many of the family’s bills, including his father’s.

1) New Details Emerge On Waukesha Attack
The Topline: More details have emerged from the Christmas parade attack in Waukesha, Wisconsin, which resulted in at least six deaths and dozens of injuries.

The Suspect
Critics note the suspect had a long rap sheet of felonies, including assault, drug possession, and statutory rape, and was recently charged with running over a woman in a domestic dispute. They say he was only walking free because of Wisconsin’s soft-on-crime policies. 
The suspect reportedly promoted violent and racist, anti-white content, which has also prompted speculation about motive.
Policies 
Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm has faced scrutiny for his decision to push for an abnormally low bail for the suspect following those crimes. In his most recent crime where he ran the woman over, he was let off on $1,000 bail only to wreak havoc on the Christmas parade three weeks later. 
Chisholm <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-wisconsin-da-admits-waukesha-person-of-interest-released-on-inappropriately-low-bail-before-tragedy">admitted</a> the bail recommendation was “inappropriately low” considering the risk factors and charges the suspect was facing at the time. However, one of the pillars of his philosophy is recommending less than the usual bail amount for various criminal activity in the name of social justice.
In 2013, Chisholm’s office allowed a convicted drug dealer to walk free under a “deferred prosecution agreement.” After being released, the man went on to inject a fatal amount of heroin into a young woman. Chisholm’s office offered hundreds of such deals, including to people charged with offenses such as felony assault against police officers and felony child abuse.
The Media
Most major news outlets rightly referred to the Charlottesville attack as an “attack.” This time, however, many of those same media sources, like the Associated Press and The Washington Post, have repeatedly referred to this more deadly attack as a “crash” and suggested the culprit was an “SUV.” 
The discrepancy has sparked blowback from people on both sides of the aisle. On November 24th, liberal actress <a href="https://twitter.com/DebraMessing/status/1463543990712774669?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1463543990712774669%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fmedia%2Fdebra-messing-waukesha-media-coverage">Debra Messing tweeted</a>, “Dear Mainstream Media—a man intentionally drove his car through a parade killing 6 and injuring 50+. It was not an ACCIDENT&#8230;it was a domestic terror attack&#8230;Don&#8217;t minimize. Please.”

2) Opening Arguments Begin In Ghislaine Maxwell Trial
The Topline: The sex trafficking trial of Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein’s former girlfriend and alleged co-conspirator, kicked off Monday with opening arguments.
The Prosecution
The prosecution and defense made their opening statements, each offering a different version of Maxwell and her role in Epstein’s world. The prosecution painted a picture of an adult man and a woman who were “partners in crime” and had a “playbook” to target minors and sexually abuse them. 
Prosecutor Lara Pomerantz highlighted that one of Maxwell’s accusers was just 14 years old when she met Epstein and Maxwell. Maxwell would allegedly lure young girls using the “ruse” of giving Epstein a massage, but she knew “exactly what was going to happen,” the prosecutors said. They also claim Maxwell herself even participated personally in some of the abuse.
The prosecution also accused Maxwell of serving up the girls to Epstein in order to sustain the lavish lifestyle Epstein provided for her. Epstein and Maxwell allegedly paid the minor girls hundreds of dollars in cash, and Maxwell even mailed lingerie to a 15-year-old victim at one point. Overall, prosecutors said Maxwell portrayed herself to the girls as someone they could trust. Meanwhile, she was allegedly grooming them for the “heinous crimes.”
The Defense
Defense Attorney Bobbi Sternheim opened by saying that women have been blamed for things more than men ever since Adam and Eve.
The defense’s main point was Epstein is not on trial, Maxwell is, and she did not commit Epstein’s crimes. 
The defense accused Maxwell’s alleged victims of making her the “scapegoat.” The defense also said this trial is about “memory, manipulation, and money” and said Maxwell’s accusers have contaminated and possibly false memories of their abuse. Finally, the defense accused all the women accusing Maxwell of going after her so that they could make money.
Ghislaine Maxwell
Daily Wire Investigative Reporter Mairead Elordi told Morning Wire that Maxwell seemed relaxed. She had on a cream-colored sweater and frequently chatted with her defense team. Maxwell even clasped her hands together cheerfully a few times as she spoke with one of her attorneys just before opening statements. She took notes at the beginning, but while the prosecution gave its opening statement, she sat very still and turned toward the jury. At one point, she sank in her chair as she sat alone for a few minutes while her lawyers spoke with the judge.
The trial is expected to last six weeks.

3) Build Back Better Agenda Items Raise Questions
The Topline: President Joe Biden’s $1.75 trillion Build Back Better plan, which includes billions in funds for progressive priorities, passed the House and is under consideration in the Senate. 
‘Civilian Climate Corps’
The Civilian Climate Corps was initially introduced by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY). It is essentially a re-creation of FDR’s New Deal Civilian Conservation Corps, but reimagined to address current climate change priorities such as reforestation and installing solar panels in urban areas. The White House has proposed between $10 and $30 billion to create the “climate corps,” which would involve hiring some 300,000 young people and paying them $15 an hour along with benefits and a potential education stipend. 
Reactions
Many economists worry that another massive spending bill would increase inflation even further, meaning a $15 an hour wage might not be attractive to workers, especially given the challenging nature of the work they would be doing. 
Arkansas Congressman Bruce Westerman, a top Republican on the House Natural Resources Committee, commented his father worked for FDR’s conservation corps and said it was backbreaking work. He believes it was a “false idea” to think the climate corps would realistically help with land management.
The Wall Street Journal described the program as essentially using taxpayer funds to hire America’s children to lecture their families.
IRS 
The White House complained in its Build Back Better framework that the IRS isn’t auditing enough wealthy taxpayers, and proposed hiring more enforcement agents specifically to “pursue wealthy evaders.” 
This plan reportedly includes $80 billion to hire 87,000 more IRS agents to increase taxpayer audits. President Biden has claimed the new enforcement resources would only be deployed to target families earning over $400,000 per year. However, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/bidens-socialist-build-back-better-irs-spy-americans-bank-accounts">reports</a>, nearly half of the estimated 1.2 million new audits would impact families earning less than $75,000 a year.
The plan also claims it will “strengthen the middle class through a historic investment in equity, safety, and fairness,” which some people would like further clarification. The White House also said in its framework it would focus on rural communities, but it does not include many details on that. 
Looking Ahead: Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia has stated his opposition to the cost and some of its policies, including one that would include a $7,500 tax credit for people who purchase an electric vehicle. Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona (D) has also suggested she would vote against the bill. If Senators Manchin and Synema and all Republicans object to the Build Back Better plan, it will fail.

Actor Matthew McConaughey will not be entering the race for governor of Texas, <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/matthew-mcconaughey-texas-governor-decision-1235051474/">saying</a> on Sunday that “political leadership” is a “path that I’m choosing not to take at this moment.” There was heavy speculation that McConaughey might run and some recent polling showing he could win against Republican Governor Greg Abbott and Democratic hopeful Beto O’Rourke. 
Enes Kanter
Boston Celtics center <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/category/sports/nba">Enes Kanter</a> changed his name to Enes Kanter Freedom upon becoming a U.S. citizen on Monday. Kanter, a Turkish national, has been a vocal critic of the Chinese Communist Party, resulting in widespread bans of Celtics games on streaming platforms in China. In addition, Kanter has spoken out in support of Tibet, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and called for the Olympics to abandon plans to hold events in Beijing.

Omicron Variant
Last week, doctors in Botswana reported multiple cases of a new COVID strain with mutations not seen before. On Wednesday, doctors in South Africa confirmed multiple cases of a new strain dubbed Omicron. By Sunday evening, there had been confirmed cases of the variant in South Africa, England, Germany, Israel, Italy, and even Canada. 
There has yet to be a confirmed case in the U.S., but experts say it’s only a matter of time, and that it’s likely already here.
Reactions
Medical experts are looking into how dangerous the strain is, and how resistant it will be to existing vaccines and COVID treatments. So far, many experts say the strain doesn’t appear particularly dangerous. 
Vaccine effectiveness against the new variant won’t be understood until there is time for testing. Moderna said they’ve been preparing for variants like this since last winter and are currently testing stronger booster shots to ward off the variant, or a new shot that will anticipate strain mutations before they happen. Pfizer also said they can develop a specific vaccine for the new variant within 100 days if needed.
Markets Respond: On Friday, the Dow Jones had its worst day of the year, falling 900 points as news of the variant broke. The S&amp;P and NASDAQ also dropped over 2% each. Asian and European markets were also negatively impacted on Friday as renewed travel bans were announced in response to the variant. 
Travel Bans
The E.U. and U.K. both implemented travel bans from 8 South African countries. In Israel, all foreign travelers were banned from entry for two weeks, after a visitor coming from Malawi tested positive for the variant. 
President Joe Biden announced beginning on Monday, the U.S. would be restricting travel from 8 African nations, most notably South Africa.

What They’re Saying
Dr. Mary Makary of Johns Hopkins University told Morning Wire that people shouldn’t jump to conclusions about the new variant, adding that new therapeutics are likely able to fight the variant if it evades immune protection, which is unlikely. 
Makary said it’s difficult for a virus to mutate to become more dangerous at this point, adding that people should mostly keep on living their lives. 
He also said travel bans aren’t very effective when there is plenty of testing available.

The Topline: Amid an uptick in crime nationwide, police are warning about a wave of “flash mob” robberies, particularly in California. 
‘Flash Mob’ Burglaries
Major metropolitan areas are struggling with a wave of “flash mob” robberies, which are essentially burglaries committed by a large group of often armed people, who are frequently young adults and teenagers. 
The group goes to a store, overwhelms the employees, smashes display cases and loads up on expensive items, before running to getaway cars waiting outside. 
This past weekend, Oakland, California, saw flash mob robberies in multiple pharmacies, a cannabis dispensary, a Nordstrom, a Louis Vuitton, and a jewelry shop. 
On Wednesday, a San Francisco news crew was able to capture a robbery on tape, where 12 thieves raided a clothing store. One assailant tried to steal the channel’s camera equipment, and a security guard for the news crew was fatally shot while trying to protect the news crew. 
Why Now?
In San Francisco, many are blaming the DA Chesa Boudin, who has been criticized as soft on crime, resulting in a recall effort. Some Californians are also pointing to California’s Proposition 47, which went into effect in 2014. It recategorized some common nonviolent offenses as misdemeanors, rather than felonies, including shoplifting, which drastically reduced penalties for certain crimes. 
Similar crimes are happening outside of California, as well. On Black Friday, two Best Buy locations in Minnesota were similarly burglarized by large groups of people. 
Some are also pointing to reduced police presence as a cause of increased and more brazen crime.

1) Tragedy In Waukesha
The Topline: After a man intentionally drove an SUV through a crowded Christmas parade on Sunday in Waukesha, Wisconsin, at least five people are dead and over 40 injured, including 18 children.

What Happened
At an annual parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, thousands of people were lining the streets as local marching bands, dance teams, and politicians walked the route. Around 4:40 p.m., a red SUV plowed through a police barricade and started barreling down the parade route, running over attendees, including members of a “dancing grannie” group and children from a local Catholic school.
Authorities said the five people killed were between 52 and 81 years old, and 18 children, including 3 sets of siblings were hospitalized. Two of those children were still in critical condition as of Monday evening. Originally, there were reports of gunfire coming from the vehicle, but police later confirmed those shots were fired by an officer trying to stop the driver. 
The Suspect
Police detained the driver, a 39 year-old black man from Wisconsin, who is now being charged with five counts of intentional homicide. Police have said that before the parade, he was involved in a domestic dispute where he was allegedly wielding a knife. Police were called and he fled in the SUV, before going on his rampage. 
Prior Record
At the beginning of this month, the suspect was convicted of intentionally running over a woman with his car after a fight in a gas station, leaving her hospitalized. He was arrested, but was released after posting a $1,000 bond. He’s been charged with 16 different crimes since 1999, including one where he nearly ran a police officer over with his car while fleeing a traffic stop, and another last year where he fired a gun at a relative during a fight. In that case, he was let off on just $500 bail.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday they’d be investigating the “inappropriately low” bond that was set for him following prior convictions.
Motive: While there is no clear motive yet, police have said they ruled out terrorism.

2) Thanksgiving Travel Returns To Pre-COVID Levels
The Topline: With the holidays approaching, airports across the country are preparing for a return to normal levels of travel, but with the airline system already under strain, many are worried about the impact on travel plans.

In a press release last week, the TSA said they expect the Thanksgiving travel period between Friday, November 19th and Sunday, November 28th, is going to be “busy,” but under control.
Numbers are up 80% compared to last year, with the TSA anticipating travel close to pre-pandemic levels.
According to the TSA, the busiest days are Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and the Sunday afterwards. 
Staffing Issues
Under the federal vaccine mandate, which includes TSA staff, workers must be fully vaccinated by Monday of this week. As of last month, 40% of TSA workers were not vaccinated or had not submitted their vaccine documents.

3) Supply Chain Backups Continue
The Topline: The Biden administration has been trying to push ports in California to open for 24 hours a day in an attempt to fix some of the supply chain backups, but their efforts might not be helping.
Supply Chain
Many experts are concerned the Biden administration’s policies are making supply chain delays worse. They say opening ports for 24 hours isn’t helpful if other members of the supply chain don’t work those times. 
The southern California ports complex is a main focus because almost 40% of the country’s container imports by volume arrive there. 
One terminal expanded its hours to be open all the time Monday to Thursday, but when no truckers arrived during their increased hours, they had to create restrictions. 
In September, the port said it would only be open at night if 25 trucks created appointments, but that only happened one night and just 5 big rig trucks arrived. It’s expensive for ports to stay open for many hours, and some truckers want to use the longer hours, but say the appointment rules are too strict. 
Solutions
Corporations such as Walmart, Target, FedEx, and UPS have said they’ll utilize weekends and nights to collect containers at the ports in Southern California. The ports also said that at the beginning of this month, they’d start charging for containers sitting on marine terminals for nine days or longer. They’ve put off charging the payment, but by November 8th, the amount of those containers had gone down by 20%.

1) Fallout After Rittenhouse Verdict
The Topline: Following Friday’s not-guilty verdict in the Kyle Rittenhouse case, multiple cities across the country experienced protests and in some cases, rioting, due to the jury’s decision.

Trial Fallout
While there have been pro-BLM protests in Kenosha following the verdict, demonstrations have so far remained peaceful. In Portland however, police declared a riot on Friday night as demonstrators smashed windows and attempted to knock down the doors to city buildings after the verdict was reached.
Rioters were also allegedly tearing down fencing and using construction signs as street barricades. At least one police car was smashed, and there were some trash and debris fires. 
Ultimately the riot was dispersed by around 11pm, after the police gave out 17 warnings, and 5 tickets. 
There were also protests in New York City, most of which were peaceful, but a handful of people were arrested for property damage in Queens, where protests took place on a residential street.

Political Reaction
President Biden addressed the verdict multiple times on Friday, first in a comment outside the White House, where he <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/582394-biden-on-rittenhouse-verdict-the-jury-system-works">said</a>, “I stand by what the jury has concluded. The jury system works, and we have to abide by it.”
But after that statement was largely derided by members of his own party, the President issued a separate written statement that took a different tone, saying the decision made him “angry and concerned.” 
Vice President Kamala Harris issued a statement of her own that suggested that the judicial system failed. &#8220;Today&#8217;s verdict speaks for itself. I&#8217;ve spent a majority of my career working to make our criminal justice system more equitable. It&#8217;s clear, there&#8217;s still a lot more work to do.&#8221;
Potential Legal Fallout
Some legal experts are saying this could be another Covington Catholic situation, where Rittenhouse could make a defamation case against public figures and outlets who labeled him a white supremacist murderer. 
2) Missing Chinese Tennis Star
The Topline: The story of missing Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai swept across the world of tennis last week and has now entered the political realm, as it appears the Chinese Communist Party played a role. 
Background
On November 2, Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai posted to Chinese social media that a former Vice Premier of the Communist Party sexually assaulted her three years ago following a round of tennis, while his wife allegedly guarded the door. Her post was deleted nearly 30 minutes after publication and Peng’s account was soon blocked to searchers. 
From that point on, no one heard from or saw Peng in public, raising concern over her safety. 
Multiple tennis stars including Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka spoke out on social media on her behalf, demanding answers. 
Then last week, a written statement attributed to Peng was posted to Twitter by CGTN — a Chinese state-affiliated media company — in which Peng recanted her claim that she was sexually assaulted.
The statement immediately raised concerns regarding her safety and whereabouts, and most assumed she did not write the statement herself, or was coerced into doing so. 
The Winter olympics are in Beijing this year, and the chair of the World Tennis Association said he is willing to pull business out of China if Peng’s safety can’t be confirmed and if there isn’t an investigation into her allegations.

Video Emerges
The WTA statement seemed to garner a reaction from the Chinese government, as a video emerged over the weekend showing Peng eating at a restaurant with her friends and a coach. The footage was posted by the official newspaper of China’s Communist Party, casting obvious doubt on the legitimacy of Peng’s safety. 
The International Olympic Committee released a statement saying they held a video call with Peng, in which she said she was “safe and well” but asked for privacy. 
Remember: The Chinese Communist Party has a well documented history of threatening those who speak out against the state — including billionaire businessmen and entertainers. 
3) The Most Expensive Thanksgiving Meal Ever
The Topline: As inflation continues to rise and supply chain backups persist, this year’s Thanksgiving meal will be more expensive than ever. And now, there’s growing concern over a potential nationwide turkey shortage.

Turkey Shortage
The USDA released a new report showing that turkey inventories were 24% lower this year compared to the last three years. In addition, according to the Farm Bureau, turkey prices this year are almost 25% higher than last year. 
Now, many grocery chains have responded by limiting the number of turkeys people can buy at once, and some started placing warnings on their website that they can’t guarantee they’ll be able to fulfill online orders that include turkey.

 The Reasons
According to farmers and economists, the shortage has been caused by the labor shortage, as well as increased costs on goods essential for raising livestock and meat birds. 
Chris and Sue Ellen Simpson, farmers in Tennessee, told the Daily Wire prices have been impacted by “the shortage of labor when it comes to trucking these birds from the farm to the processing, from the processing to the market,” among other things. They also said increased gas and grain prices have left many farmers with no choice but to raise costs. 
Prices Up Across The Board
The Farm Bureau report showed that the cost of an average thanksgiving meal this year is up 14% compared to last year. And that’s not because just one product is more expensive. Nearly every industry has been impacted, with prices on pie crusts up 20% this year, and dinner rolls up 15%.

The Bills
The four bills would require private employers to allow for vaccine exemptions including health or religious concerns, pregnancy or someone trying to get pregnant, and those who have natural immunity from a previous COVID infection. The legislation will also prevent schools from forcing students to get vaccinated or wear masks. 
One of the laws strips the surgeon general’s ability to push vaccine mandates and will begin the process of having Florida exit OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, that is issuing the vaccine mandates ordered by the Biden administration.
OSHA Lawsuit 

Florida was one of the states that filed a lawsuit against OSHA and the Biden administration’s vaccine and testing mandate shortly after it was released. 
The bills were signed after DeSantis called for a special legislative session to get them to his desk. DeSantis said he needed to protect workers so they wouldn&#8217;t lose their jobs after the holidays due to the potential for the federal government’s mandate.

The Topline: The number of homicides in the United States jumped significantly in 2020, with every city in the nation affected.

The Numbers
2020 saw the largest increase in the number of homicides in U.S. history, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI reported a <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/09/27/1040904770/fbi-data-murder-increase-2020">30% increase</a> in homicides between 2019 and 2020. There were a total of 21,570 homicides in the U.S. last year, meaning 4,900 more Americans were killed in 2020 than 2019. 
According to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/mortality-dashboard.htm">National Center for Health Statistics</a>, an arm of the CDC, that’s an even <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/06/health/us-homicide-rate-increase-nchs-study/index.html">larger surge</a> in homicides than the nation experienced after the 9/11 attacks.
Murder rates rose in large cities, but also in small towns across the country. Authorities say every large city saw its murder rate rise by 30% or more.
Chicago
Chicago’s official statistics say the city has had 715 murders so far this year, a <a href="https://home.chicagopolice.org/wp-content/uploads/1_PDFsam_CompStat-Public-2021-Week-46.pdf">57%</a> increase over pre-pandemic levels. But it may be worse than that: The Chicago Sun-Times, which officially tracks every murder in the city, <a href="https://graphics.suntimes.com/homicides/">reports</a> almost 800 victims in Chicago’s streets this year.  
One of the most publicized murders occurred Tuesday, when a 24-year-old University of Chicago graduate named Shaoxiong Zheng died during a robbery in the Hyde Park neighborhood. His <a href="https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/u-of-c-graduate-struggled-with-suspect-before-fatal-shooting-court-docs/2684137/">alleged murderer</a>, 18-year-old Alton Spann, pawned the man’s laptop for $100. 
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) initially tried to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/lori-lightfoot-said-chicagos-crime-is-falling-heres-what-the-numbers-say">cut the police budget by $59 million</a> in 2020. She’s also insisting all officers be vaccinated against COVID-19, leading to a shortage of as many as <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chicago-suffering-officer-shortage-cant-find-recruits-people-dont-want-to-be-the-police">1,600 officers</a> from the Chicago Police Department. Last month, however, she reversed course and increased the police budget by <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/city-hall/2021/10/27/22748658/chicago-city-council-budget-vote-approval-lightfoot-federal-relief-funds-coronavirus-property-taxes">$189 million</a>.
Remember: Murder rates <a href="https://bjs.ojp.gov/content/pub/pdf/htus8008.pdf">have been higher</a>, total and per capita, in the past. For every 100,000 Americans, almost eight people were killed in 2020. In 1980, it was 10.2. The overall number of murders peaked in 1991, at 24,703.

3) Climate Summit Draws Accusations Of Hypocrisy
The Topline: Despite hundreds of countries reaching various agreements, the United Nations global climate summit — COP26 — has been condemned by many for its alleged hypocrisy.

Takeaways
This past weekend, the summit, which was held in Glasgow, came to an end. It was billed by its organizer as the “last, best hope” to save the planet. It was also the first U.N. climate deal to explicitly discuss the alleged need to move away from coal power and subsidies for fossil fuels.
Diplomats from nearly 200 countries agreed to intensify efforts to fight climate change, calling on governments to come back next year with stronger plans to reduce emissions and increase funding from richer countries.
The U.S. and China agreed to “do more” to cut emissions, with China committing to develop a plan to reduce methane. China also agreed to “phase down” coal starting in 2026, but didn’t include specifics. China’s coal production has reached an all-time high.
More than 100 countries agreed to end deforestation by 2030, and to cut methane emissions by 30% by the end of this decade. 
India, one of the world’s largest polluters, joined a group of countries who have pledged to reach “net zero” emissions, but the goal is set 49 years away in 2070.
In all, there were a lot of promises with no concrete plans in the near future.
Alleged Hypocrisy
A total of 400 private jets delivered leaders to the summit, burning over 13,000 tons of CO2 in the process, which is equivalent to the amount consumed by over 1,600 British citizens in one year.
Prince Charles, an outspoken advocate for fighting climate change, took a private jet to the event, while Boris Johnson was criticized after he flew back to London halfway through the summit for a dinner.
John Kerry, President Biden’s climate czar, attended the summit as one of the key negotiators. Some pointed out that Kerry routinely flies around the world on his private plane. 
President Joe Biden attended after traveling to Rome for the G20 meeting, with an estimated 2.2 million pounds of carbon generated during his Europe trip. He also traveled to Scotland with a large entourage, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Still no verdict in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial after Judge Bruce Schroeder requested an expert witness to review information over drone footage the defense says was withheld from them. Judge Schroeder has also banned reporters from MSNBC for the duration of the trial. He issued the order after a journalist hired by the network was stopped by police when he ran a red light after appearing to be following the jury bus from the courthouse. 1) Defense Files For Mistrial In Kyle Rittenhouse Case

Mistrial Request
The main issue revolved around key drone footage that captured the shooting of Joseph Rosenbaum — the first man shot by Rittenhouse — which the defense team says they were not given a full resolution copy of. Apparently the defense did not realize they had a reduced resolution copy of this footage until Friday, after all the arguments were given and the footage was played in front of the jury, at which point the observation was made that the prosecution&#8217;s version of the video appeared clearer than the defenses. 
What We Know
The footage was shot by a civilian and very early on was in the possession of Rittenhouse’s original legal team. It was somehow lost when Rittenhouse changed counsel. 
The same footage was also purchased and aired by Tucker Carlson. On November 5th of 2021, the civilian turned over the footage to the state, and the state claims they promptly shared it with the defense. 
Defense attorney Natalie Wisco claims her copy, which was shared with her via email from the same detective who shared it with the state, was about 4MB, whereas it was discovered the state’s version was around 11MB, with significantly sharper image quality. 
She noticed her team&#8217;s version of the footage was saved under a different file name than the sharper quality version in possession of the state at the state crime lab. 
She also noticed the metadata of the file showed a different creation time &#8212; 21 minutes later &#8212; than the file at the state crime lab. 
Possible Explanation
The prosecution says they believe the file could have been compressed during the emailing process, and Morning Wire spoke to experts who have confirmed that process could have changed the file name as well. 
At the moment, it&#8217;s unclear whether the email server that either the detective or Wisco used compressed the file, but Judge Schroeder said they would need an expert witness to testify about the technological aspect of things.
The state pointed out it was the defense that was initially in possession of the file, and they had no reason to think Rittenhouses’s original counsel wouldn&#8217;t have shared the footage with the new team. They also claimed the amount of time between receiving the file from the detective and passing it on to the defense was insufficient to have tampered with it, and emphasized the defense did not object to the state&#8217;s use of the higher resolution footage or inclusion of it in the case at any point prior to Friday afternoon. 
Outside the courthouse: A 20-year-old man was arrested for battery and a 34-year-old woman for disorderly conduct after isolated scuffles occurred at small protests outside the courthouse.

2) OSHA Suspends Biden Vaccine Mandate
The Topline:  In an apparent reversal from the Biden administration, OSHA has suspended the implementation of its controversial vaccine mandate for private employers.

The Suspension
On Wednesday, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) suspended implementation of the Biden administration’s controversial vaccine mandate for private employers, which threatens companies with fines of over $100,000 per infraction if they don’t require employees to be vaccinated or tested for COVID. 
The move comes after a federal court blocked the mandate last week, calling it a “staggering overreach” and likely unconstitutional. 
OSHA’s suspension of the rule is a reversal for the administration, which initially signaled it would move forward with the mandate despite the court’s ruling against it. 
Based on their choice of words, it’s likely they don&#8217;t intend to wait until the 6th Circuit reaches a final ruling, and will file a motion to lift the stay. However, the court could still take several weeks, or months, before issuing a ruling.
This decision will also likely impact a potential enforcement date, as the mandate was supposed to go into effect on January 4th. 
What’s Next?
First, it’s likely there will be an effort by those in favor of the mandate to transfer the case to different courts they consider to be more favorable. 
Second, the Biden administration will likely attempt to have the stay lifted. 
Third, some of the plaintiffs have already filed a petition that the 6th Circuit immediately hear the case en banc – meaning instead of selecting a panel of three judges, all 16 judges in the 6th Circuit would rule on the case. This would save the court’s and the parties&#8217; time, but that decision is up to the court.

3) Defendant Testifies In Ahmaud Arbery Trial
The Topline: A defendant in the killing of Ahmaud Arbery took the stand Wednesday to give his side of the story after the prosecution rested their case.

The Case
In February 2020, three white men who lived in a South Georgia neighborhood chased down Ahmaud Arbery, a black man. Travis McMichael, and his father Gregory McMichael, grabbed guns and began pursuing Arbery by car after he ran past their yard, which was near a vacant property. Their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan Jr., also followed Arbery in a different car. 
Gregory McMichael, a former police officer and investigator, has said he believed Arbery had recently broken into places in the neighborhood. Last week, jurors saw videos of Arbery walking through the property five separate times between October 25th, 2019, and February 23rd, 2020. The last time was moments before he was chased down and shot by Travis McMichael during a confrontation between the two. 
The case received national attention when a video clip recorded from one of the cars was put out in May 2020. 
All three men are <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/05/us/charges-arbery-killing-trial-defendants.html">facing</a> multiple charges including murder and aggravated assault. If convicted, they could spend their lives in prison, but they’re pleading not guilty. 
The Prosecution
Head prosecutor Linda Dunikoski <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-52623151">said</a>, &#8220;All three of these defendants did everything they did based on assumptions —  not on fact, not on evidence, on assumptions.” 
Jurors were shown photos of the shirt Arbery was wearing when he was shot, which was completely red, presumably from his blood since video shows it had been white. 
The jury was also able to see close-up pictures of his face. 
A forensic pathologist who conducted an autopsy on Arbery’s body testified that he concluded Arbery was shot at close range. 
The Defense
The defense called defendant Travis McMichael to the stand on Wednesday, and he gave an emotional testimony.  
It appears they will state the shooting was self-defense after an attempt at a citizen’s arrest. Travis McMichael has said Arbery attacked him, and the actions he took were in self-defense. 
At the time in Georgia, a citizen’s arrest law stated that under certain conditions, someone could “arrest” a person who committed a crime. The <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/05/11/995835333/in-ahmaud-arberys-name-georgia-repeals-citizens-arrest-law">law</a> was repealed and replaced with different phrasing after the shooting of Arbery.

Morning Wire On The Ground
The jury of seven women and five men were told by the judge to reconvene Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. They deliberated all day Tuesday with a short lunch break and requested the first few pages of jury instructions. 
Anti-Rittenhouse Protesters 
The vast majority of the protesters Morning Wire spoke to in Kenosha support the state&#8217;s case against Rittenhouse. Many said they feel this case is explicitly about race, claiming Rittenhouse is a clear example of white supremacy. 
At least one protester referenced a photo of Rittenhouse with “Proud Boy sympathizers,” although the prosecution was not able to link Rittenhouse to the Proud Boys, and he has denied association with the far-right group. Protesters also pointed to donations Rittenhouse received for his legal defense, which they say allowed him to obtain expensive counsel, claiming his race was a factor in the amount of donations he received. 
Though all of the men involved in the Rittenhouse case were white, many protesters pointed to the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha as the reason the case was centered on race. 
Throughout the day, Black Lives Matter protesters were chanting the names “Anthony and Jo Jo” and “say their names” – a reference to Joseph Rosenbaum, the first man Rittenhouse shot, and Anthony Huber, the second man Rittenhouse shot. 
Pro-Rittenhouse Protesters
Activists supporting Rittenhouse claimed the charges brought against him were atypical in a case like this, adding how he has not been allowed a presumption of innocence in the court of public opinion or the media. They say this is due to Rittenhouse’s presumed political affiliation, and possibly due to him being white.
Many of them also focused on Rittenhouse’s right to self-defense, saying the video footage shows he shot Rosenbaum, Huber, and Grosskruetz after attempting to retreat, and only when harm was imminent. They say it was reasonable for Rittenhouse to feel his life was threatened, and expressed concern this case would set a dangerous precedent for self-defense if Rittenhouse is found guilty. 
Preparing for unrest: 500 members of the National Guard are stationed in Kenosha in case there is violence following a verdict.

The Leaked Email
On Tuesday, Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee provided an internal email from the FBI’s counterterrorism division.
The leaked email revealed how the FBI’s counterterrorism and criminal divisions created a specific threat tag to track what they deemed were threats against local school districts. 
The email was signed by multiple officials from the FBI’s counterterrorism division and described how those who were considered a threat would be monitored under a new tag called “EDUOFFICIALS.” 
Reactions
Some defended the email, saying it was a good thing, and the FBI should be monitoring those protesting school officials, because they are a threat.
It appeared there were more people, however, who viewed it as FBI overreach, and saw this as an example of the government attempting to intimidate parents who are protesting what’s happening in their children’s schools. They say equating them to domestic terrorists is insulting and the broad language in the email could result in almost anyone being monitored or deemed a threat at some point.
Congressional Response
On Tuesday evening, Democrats were largely silent on the matter, but Republicans called it an attack on parents, saying the FBI was exaggerating the threat in an attempt to suppress protest against liberal policies in schools. They also pointed out how this email appeared to contradict statements given last month by Attorney General Merrick Garland. 
Going Forward: Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) sent a letter to Garland, saying he had “intentionally misled” the American public when he testified the FBI was not using counterterrorism tools to monitor parents. Republicans invited him to testify before the Judiciary Committee once more to amend his testimony.

3) Biden Meets With President Xi 
The Topline: On Monday night, leaders of the United States and China met to discuss numerous issues concerning both countries, including military aggression, trade, and human rights.

The Meeting
On Monday, President Joe Biden met virtually with China’s President Xi Jinping in their first official meeting since Biden became president. 
After three and a half hours of discussion, there were no significant breakthroughs on key policies underpinning the relationship between the two countries, beyond a pledge to improve cooperation.
Taiwan 
One key area of discussion was Taiwan, which has been the target of increased Chinese aggression in recent months. Xi reportedly threatened Biden over Taiwan, warning that assisting the country in pursuing independence is “playing with fire, and if you play with fire, you will get burned.”
Xi said China would have to take “resolute” measures if Taiwan’s seperatist forces provoked them or crossed the red line. 
China’s foreign minister warned Secretary of State Antony Blinken over the weekend that “any connivance of and support for ‘Taiwan independence’ forces undermine peace across the Taiwan Strait and would only boomerang in the end.”
Other Topics
Biden raised American concerns about human rights abuses in Hong Kong and against Uighur Muslims, which China effectively rejected as the United States meddling in its affairs. 
Regarding trade, Biden discussed the “need to protect American workers and industries from [China’s] unfair trade and economic practices.” Reports indicate Xi told Biden the U.S. needed to stop abusing the concept of national security to oppress Chinese companies.
U.S. National Security advisor Jake Sullivan also claimed Biden and Xi agreed to start arms control talks.
