Creator and actress Mindy Kaling has made history for her <a href="https://slate.com/culture/2023/01/velma-mindy-kaling-hbo-max-review.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">woke</a> <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mindy-kalings-velma-will-be-east-asian-series-wont-have-scooby-doo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scooby-Doo</a> spin-off &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mindy-kalings-scooby-doo-spinoff-velma-trashed-by-fans-saying-its-horrible-not-funny-at-all" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Velma</a>&#8221; &#8212; but certainly not in the way she expected.
The HBO Max show, as highlighted by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mindy-kalings-scooby-doo-spinoff-velma-trashed-by-fans-saying-its-horrible-not-funny-at-all" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a>, has absolutely bombed on the review-aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. And now it&#8217;s landed the number three spot on IMDb&#8217;s list of worst-rated shows of all time.
While only four episodes of &#8220;Velma&#8221; have aired so far, the show has already racked up more than 41,000 1-star reviews. On the flip side, it&#8217;s earned a mere 1,688 10-star reviews as of Tuesday morning.

Kaling&#8217;s &#8220;Velma&#8221; is only behind &#8220;The Pogmentary&#8221; and &#8220;Iste Bu Benim Masalim&#8221; on the worst-rated IMDb <a href="https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=tv_series&amp;num_votes=5000,&amp;sort=user_rating,asc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">list</a>, while &#8220;A Little Late with Lilly Singh&#8221; and &#8220;Santa Inc.&#8221; are behind &#8220;Velma&#8221; to round out the top five.
The show&#8217;s negative reviews are all over the place, though they all agree it completely misses the mark. Some slam Kaling for going full-woke and constantly focusing on race, sexuality, and gender, while others are incensed about how far-removed the show is from the classic &#8220;Scooby-Doo.&#8221;
And it&#8217;s even worse for Kaling, who strived for woke applause. Some reviews on the IMDb page actually slam the creator of the show for its apparent racism and sexism.
&#8220;The jokes aren&#8217;t funny. It&#8217;s not cool. It&#8217;s not hip. It&#8217;s the opposite. It&#8217;s majorly offensive. Offensive for two reasons,&#8221; one review <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14153790/reviews?ref_=tt_sa_3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reads</a>. &#8220;One for how terrible it is and it is really bottom of the barrel terrible, and two for its obvious sexism and racism. What an absolute insult, really, to anyone with half a shred of respectability. I&#8217;m just staggered that this even exists.&#8221;
Another high-ranking review on the IMDb page highlights the bizarre sexual aspects of the show.
&#8220;This was atrocious. I watched the entire first episode and did not laugh once. Not even a chuckle. The jokes were so juvenile, so heavy handed and the premise so far removed from the original IP, it was embarrassing,&#8221; the review slams, adding, &#8220;Why is this series about sex and what does any of the random sexual situations have to do with Scooby Doo? I also don&#8217;t know, nor care. Speaking of which, where is Scooby and Shaggy? &#8230; Personally, I feel like HBO and Mindy Kaling owe everyone an apology for this abomination of a series.&#8221;
Notably, before the show even aired, Kaling made it a point to emphasize that the main animated character, Velma, would be South Asian.
“Hopefully you noticed my Velma is South Asian,” Kaling <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mindy-kaling-announces-her-scooby-doo-velma-character-is-south-asian-says-if-people-freak-out-about-that-i-dont-care" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> last year to a crowd of fans. “If people freak out about that, I don’t care.”

The new “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/television">Scooby-Doo</a>” spinoff cartoon “Velma” is not appealing to many fans of the original series.
The adult-oriented cartoon airing on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hbo-max">HBO Max</a> features the character Velma Dinkley and her origin story before the beloved crime-solving gang from the original &#8220;Scooby-Doo&#8221; series got together. It stars comedic actress <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mindy-kaling">Mindy Kaling</a> as the voice of the main character alongside a cast of diverse characters.
“Velma” was released this week, and already many “Scooby-Doo” fans are upset about how the series fundamentally changes the characters’ personalities. So far, the series has an 8% audience rating and a 50% critic rating on <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/velma/s01">Rotten Tomatoes</a>.
“If you are a fan of Scooby-Doo don&#8217;t watch this. It&#8217;s everything terrible about modern-day Hollywood wrapped into a terrible Reboot no one asked for,” one reviewer warned.
“As a fan of the original series, this is not written for me which is a shame really,” another viewer agreed.
“I actually gave this show the benefit of the doubt. As I was watching it dawned on me, the only creativity left in these Hollywood types is to change the race of some of the protagonists and add in some seriously unfunny childish humor,” another person echoed.

&#8220;Writing is horrible, voice acting is mediocre at best, animation is atrocious, jokes are painfully unfunny and the show doesn&#8217;t respect the original concept. Character&#8217;s personalities are so different it doesn&#8217;t resemble anything that we loved to watch as kids and it&#8217;s too vulgar for today&#8217;s kids,&#8221; another shared.
&#8220;A complete disaster. It&#8217;s not funny at all,&#8221; yet another Rotten Tomatoes user wrote.
Many reviewers pointed out the blatant adult content, with one person calling the new series “unnecessarily sexual,” especially considering how the characters are meant to be teenagers.

One reviewer wrote: “Hey let&#8217;s take people&#8217;s childhood and fill it with violence, profanities, drugs and sexual references, they&#8217;ll love it!”
While critics rated “Velma” slightly better, they were also mostly unimpressed with the finished product.
“It’s been done before, and much better, using unique takes on the gang that maintained their essence, so Velma is never as groundbreaking as it seems to think it is,” the Variety reviewer <a href="https://variety.com/2023/tv/reviews/velma-review-hbo-max-queer-scooby-doo-mindy-kaling-1235486171/">shared</a>. “More than that, these characters are just really unpleasant to spend time with.”
“Too much meta humor, not enough heart,” the Hollywood Reporter synopsis <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-reviews/velma-hbo-max-mindy-kaling-constance-wu-1235292034/">says</a>.
Kaling, who also serves as executive producer on the project, previously spoke about her inclusion of a same-sex kiss between Velma and Daphne in episode two of the new show. Velma’s sexuality has long been a topic of discussion among fans.
“The character is so iconic, and there’s been so much speculation about her sexuality,” Kaling said, per <a href="https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/velma-gay-mindy-kaling-hbo-max-animated-1235486503/">Variety</a>. “I work on a couple other shows about young women, and it just felt like this gift to explore that, knowing that there’s all these expectations for the character. It was one of the reasons why it really felt worthy to do an origin story of her.”
“We faced no resistance. We came in and said, ‘This is what we want to do, and this is how we want to do it,&#8217;” series creator Charlie Grandy agreed of their decision to add the kiss.

The 43-year-old, who played Kelly Kapoor on the series, made the remarks during an interview with “Good Morning America” last week. 
“That show is so inappropriate now,” Kaling <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/mindy-kalingthe-office-inappropriate-characters-canceled-1235451403/">said</a>.
“The writers who I’m still in touch with now, we always talk about how so much of that show we probably couldn’t make now,” she continued. “Tastes have changed, and honestly what offends people has changed so much now. I think that actually is one of the reasons the show is popular, because people feel like there’s something kind of fearless about it or taboo that it talks about on the show.”

When asked what her character Kelly would be doing today, Kaling joked that she’d have quit Dunder Mifflin and become a social media influencer, then would “probably be canceled almost immediately. Actually, most of the characters on that show would be canceled by now,&#8221; the actress said.
“The Office” is an incredibly successful American adaptation of the British TV series starring Ricky Gervais. It aired for nine seasons on NBC from 2005 until 2013.
Series co-creator Gervais already acknowledged that the show would be canceled by today’s standards. He <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ricky-gervais-jokes-the-office-would-be-canceled-today">said</a> in 2021, “I mean now it would be canceled. I’m looking forward to when they pick out one thing and try to cancel it. Someone said they might try to cancel it one day, and I say, ‘Good, let them cancel it. I’ve been paid!’”
The American version starred Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott on the show. He maintains that he&#8217;d never participate in a reboot if it happened.
“I’ll tell you, no,” Carell <a href="https://collider.com/steve-carell-no-office-reunion-explained">said</a> in 2018 when asked about participating in a reunion or reboot. “The show is way more popular now than when it was on the air. I just can’t see it being the same thing, and I think most folks would want it to be the same thing, but it wouldn’t be. Ultimately, I think it’s maybe best to leave well enough alone and just let it exist as what it was.”
“You’d literally have to have all of the same writers, the same producers, the same directors, and the same actors, and even with all of those components, it just wouldn’t be the same,” he continued. “So, no. But, I love the show. It was the most exciting time, and all of those people are my friends. We all love it. It was a special thing. It was a special thing before people thought it was a special thing. It was special to us, before other people started feeling that way. But, no.”

Speaking to Kaling on her podcast &#8220;Archetypes,&#8221; the pair discussed the &#8220;stigma of singleton&#8221; and derided the terms &#8220;spinster&#8221; and &#8220;old maid.&#8221; Markle also said that when she became engaged to her now-husband, some of the reaction she received was actually sexist.
&#8220;When I started dating my husband, we became engaged and everyone was just like, &#8216;Oh my god, you&#8217;re so lucky! He chose you!'&#8221; she <a href="https://people.com/royals/meghan-markle-reacts-people-saying-lucky-prince-harry-chose-her-archetypes-podcast-mindy-kaling/">detailed</a>.
&#8220;And at a certain point, after you hear it a million times over, you&#8217;re like, &#8216;Well, I chose him too,'&#8221; the former actress continued. &#8220;But thankfully, I have a partner who was countering that narrative for me and going, &#8216;They&#8217;ve got it all wrong. I&#8217;m the lucky one, &#8217;cause you chose me.'&#8221;
Emphasizing her disapproval, Markle added, &#8220;It&#8217;s gendered and it&#8217;s archetyped and it&#8217;s stereotyped.&#8221;
&#8220;&#8216;You&#8217;re so lucky,'&#8221; she recalled of the intended compliments. &#8220;And it just feeds into this idea that you&#8217;re waiting for someone to tell you that you&#8217;re good enough, as opposed to knowing that you&#8217;re good enough on your own.&#8221;
Markle and Prince Harry wed in May 2018 at St. George&#8217;s Chapel at Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom.
In recent years, the pair have distanced themselves from the royal family, giving up royal titles and throwing out accusations of racism.
Alternatively, rumors about <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/meghan-markle-bullied-royal-aides-complaint-was-filed-report-says">Markle bullying royal aides</a> popped up in the media. Kaling reportedly alluded to her privilege and the overturning of the abortion case Roe v. Wade before promoting single motherhood for others.
&#8220;The choice to have a child—by yourself, on your own terms—it was the best part of my life &#8230; It&#8217;s the thing that I hope women feel confident doing by themselves,&#8221; she said.
“I wish every 19-year-old girl would come home from college and that the gift —instead of buying them jewelry or a vacation or whatever — is that their parents would take them to freeze their eggs,&#8221; the &#8220;Mindy Project&#8221; creator said.
&#8220;They could do that once and have all these eggs for them, for their futures … to focus in your twenties and thirties on your career, and yes, love, but to know that when you&#8217;re emotionally ready, and, if you don&#8217;t have a partner, you can still have children,&#8221; the actress continued.
Kaling has never revealed the biological father of her children or if he&#8217;s in her children&#8217;s lives at all. However, rumors have sparked that fellow &#8220;Office&#8221; writer and close friend B.J. Novak is the dad. Novak and Kaling briefly dated during their &#8220;Office&#8221; years.
&#8220;He&#8217;s the godparent to both my kids—and they have such a great relationship—and so far [the rumors haven’t] affected my happiness at all, it hasn&#8217;t affected my kids or BJ,&#8221; she reacted. &#8220;If that&#8217;s what is going to be titillating to people, I&#8217;ll take it.”
Kaling said she plans on creating a show featuring a single woman in her forties pursuing romance &#8212; and thinks she&#8217;s the only person to do it.
“Culture largely says, ‘We don&#8217;t wanna hear about you. Your entire deal bums everyone out.’ If you&#8217;re a 42-year-old [single] woman with kids, it makes people sad,&#8221; she told the magazine. &#8220;I&#8217;m like, ‘There is hope for us. There could be great stories about women, like me, finding love, finding happiness…’ I can&#8217;t imagine anyone besides me would write it, so I have to find the time to do that.”
Back in 2018, Kaling notably <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/actress-mindy-kaling-gives-horrifying-dating-amanda-prestigiacomo">gave men some shocking dating advice</a> while delivering the commencement address at Dartmouth College, her alma mater.
“This one is just for guys: When you go on dates, act as if every woman you’re talking to is a reporter for an online publication that you are scared of,” she told the grads. “One shouldn’t need the threat of public exposure and scorn to treat women well; but if that’s what it’s gonna take, fine. Date like everyone’s watching, because we are.”
The commentary showcased Kaling&#8217;s adversarial view of the sexes, suggesting men should be terrified to pursue women. And if a man falters or says something interpreted in a way a woman does not like, their words can and should be used against them.

Actress Mindy Kaling announced her &#8220;Scooby-Doo&#8221; Velma character is South Asian and made it clear she didn&#8217;t &#8220;care&#8221; if &#8220;people freak out&#8221; about the animated mystery hunter no longer being a white character.
During the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront presentation Wednesday, the 42-year-old star and executive producer of the upcoming adult animated series, titled &#8220;Velma,&#8221; showed the audience an image of her character who is now South Asian, <a href="https://ew.com/tv/mindy-kaling-teases-her-south-asian-velma-cartoon/?utm_campaign=entertainmentweekly_entertainmentweekly&amp;utm_content=new&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_term=628530a22b6470000137ed48">reported</a> Entertainment Weekly.
Kaling&#8217;s solo-series is reimagined from the popular 1969 cartoon &#8220;Scooby-Doo.&#8221; On the show, it was Velma who was often the one who solved the mysteries and was definitely seen as the brains behind the rag-tag crew of kids that worked together to solve crazy mysteries, which consisted of Velma Dinkley, Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Shaggy Rogers, and their pup Scooby-Doo.

The new show will not be that, and is being sold as a 10-episode adult animated series that will run on HBO Max. After Kaling introduced her character, she made a point to note what was different about her Velma.
&#8220;If a dog can solve crimes,&#8221; Kaling shared, then her Velma &#8220;can be brown,&#8221; <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/05/mindy-kaling-velma-hbo-max-controversy-1235027077/">reported</a> Deadline.
&#8220;Hopefully you noticed my Velma is South Asian,&#8221; &#8220;The Mindy Project&#8221; star told the crowd. &#8220;If people freak out about that, I don&#8217;t care.&#8221;
Along with Kaling revealing her character, the actress also shared a NSFW image of the upcoming animated series that shows a character with some of their head missing and an animated person topless with the rest of their body covered in what appears to be bubbles.
Last year, the streaming service announced the project it described it as &#8220;an original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America&#8217;s most beloved mystery solvers.&#8221;

Mindy Kaling&#8217;s new &#8220;Velma&#8221; series will portray the character as a girl of East Asian descent, and the upcoming HBO Max show won&#8217;t include either talking Great Dane Scooby Doo or the Mystery Machine.
WanerMedia&#8217;s Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics, revealed the details about the new series on Thursday, adding that the animated show is meant for adults and not children.
&#8220;Not for children, but we have a Mindy Kaling project called &#8216;Velma&#8217; because she was excited to re-imagine what Scooby-Doo would be like if Velma were of East Asian descent and lived in a different world,&#8221; Ascheim <a href="https://worldscreenevents.com/festivals/keynote-warnermedias-tom-ascheim/">said</a> Thursday at the TV Kids Summer Festival.
Like her new character, Kaling is of Asian descent, as her parents are from India. Kaling herself will voice Velma in her prequel spin-off of the animated franchise, which will explore the origin story of the amateur detective and member of the Mystery Inc. gang.

&#8220;And I think it&#8217;s great. So allowing our creators to play with our IP is super powerful,&#8221; he said.
The changes to the beloved, bespectacled character prompted raised eyebrows from some Scooby Doo fans on Twitter, who expressed skepticism about whether Kaling&#8217;s Velma could really be counted as the same character. The hashtag #NotMyVelma quickly cropped up among fans tweeting their disapproval.
&#8220;Well she&#8217;s not Velma then is she,&#8221; <a href="https://twitter.com/Bolverk15/status/1402942203832508420">wrote</a> one Twitter user, adding sardonically, &#8220;Gonna make a tv show about Luke Skywalker, except it&#8217;s inspired by sex in the city and actually about a woman living in ancient Greece and call it a ‘different interpretation’ of the character.&#8221;
&#8220;As an east asian myself, i think this is just woke-washing and unnessary. Moreover, i find it offensive that asians are always protrayed as nerdy. This is not ok. &#8220;Why even make it a Velma series? Just make a new character?&#8221; <a href="https://twitter.com/literaturedevil/status/1402819549754499075">wrote</a> another.
Some on Twitter pointed out that Velma has already been played by an actress with Asian ancestry. Hayley Kiyoko, who is part-Japanese, tackled the role in the Scooby-Doo TV movies “The Mystery Begins” in 2009 and the following year&#8217;s “Curse of the Lake Monster.”
HBO Max announced in February that &#8220;Velma&#8221; was awarded a 10-episode order.
Around the time of the announcement, Kaling clapped back at a Twitter user who complained in a now-deleted tweet about her voicing Velma herself.

The original Scooby-Doo series debuted on CBS as a Saturday morning cartoon in 1969.
