An 18-year-old Wisconsin man was sentenced to life in prison last week after the brutal killing of a 5-year-old Milwaukee boy. 
Erik Mendoza was 15 years old when he killed Prince McCree, who was reported missing by his mother in October 2023 after the boy went downstairs to play video games. Mendoza’s co-conspirator, David Pietura, also lived in the home with McCree and his mother.
After McCree was reported missing, police found the boy’s body in a dumpster about a mile away from home. According to court documents, Mendoza confessed to choking McCree before repeatedly hitting him with a golf club. 
The case changed Wisconsin law and led to the <a href="https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/WIGOV/bulletins/3952c1c">Prince Act</a>, which expands the Amber Alerts system for missing children who do not meet the criteria. <a href="https://amberalert.widoj.gov/amber/about">According</a> to Amber Alert Wisconsin, the child must be 17 years of age or younger, in danger of serious bodily harm or death, and the initiating agency must have enough descriptive information about the child, the suspect and/or the suspect vehicle to believe an immediate broadcast alert will help locate the child. 
The Milwaukee Police Department requested an Amber Alert for McCree, but their request was denied because his case did not fit the criteria listed.
The Prince Act — or Senate Bill 981, now 2023 Wisconsin Act 272 — was signed by Governor Tony Evers to expand the Silver Alert to certain children. “An alert could be issued if the person is under the age of 18, their location is unknown, they do not otherwise qualify for another alert, and they are unable to return home without help because of a physical or mental condition, disability, or age.”
The act helped to &#8220;ensure authorities in future missing child cases have expanded resources to issue quicker and more robust alert notices to the public, hopefully ensuring kids are able to be quickly located and returned home safely in the future.&#8221; 
After the murder, Mendoza and Pietura disposed of the boy&#8217;s body, and surveillance of the area showed them in an alley with a white garbage bag the same day that McCree disappeared, according to court documents. 
The prosecutors jumped on the opportunity to mention that Pietura initially told investigators that he and Mendoza went for a walk, but cellphone GPS data refuted his claim. Pietura eventually led police to where they had left McCree’s body.
In 2024, Pietura pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide and was sentenced to life in prison. 
Earlier this year, Mendoza pleaded guilty to “first-degree intentional homicide, hiding a corpse, and three counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety in the death of Prince McCree,” <a href="https://www.wisn.com/article/milwaukee-sentencing-erik-mendoza-killing-prince-mccree/71507757">according</a> to WISN. Mendoza will not be eligible to petition for his release for 50 years. 
During the hearing last Friday, the boy’s parents, Darron McCree and Jordan Barger, gave very emotional victim impact statements.
&#8220;What I wanna say is, I wish this guy would die and burn, no mercy,” McCree said. “I wish I could do it with my hands. When he killed my baby, he killed me.&#8221; 
“What happened to Prince shouldn’t happen to any child,” Barger said in the press release. “The current alert system failed him and failed our family, and I hope that with this new law, more families will get the attention and resources they need to bring their kids home safely.”

Raise one up for one of the most iconic beer brands in America. After 177 years, Schlitz Premium is being discontinued.
Pabst Brewing Co., the brand&#8217;s parent company, announced that Schlitz Premium is being put “on hiatus.” 
“Unfortunately, we have seen continued increases in our costs to store and ship certain products and have had to make the tough choice to place Schlitz Premium on hiatus,” head of brand strategy Zac Nadile said in a <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2026/05/19/famous-beer-schlitz-brewed-one-last-time-ending-177-year-run/90157205007/">statement</a>, according to USA Today.
“Any brand or packaging configuration that is put on hiatus is still a cherished part of our history and hopefully our future. We continually look for opportunities to bring back beloved brands, and customer feedback is important in shaping those discussions.”
Schlitz traces its roots back to 1849, when August Krug founded a tavern brewery in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel <a href="https://www.jsonline.com/story/money/business/2026/05/21/tell-the-journal-sentinel-what-will-you-do-with-your-last-schlitz/90182695007/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=false&amp;gca-epti=z115329p115150l004450c115150u116529e1113xxv115329&amp;gca-ft=39&amp;gca-ds=sophi">reported</a>. After Krug died in 1856, company bookkeeper Joseph Schlitz married Krug’s widow and renamed the company after himself.
Schlitz died at sea in 1875, but the company continued to grow and became one of the largest beer brands in the nation. Stiff competition eventually led to the company shutting down in 1982 before Pabst Brewing Co. revived the brand after acquiring it in 1999.
Schlitz returned to the market in 2008 with a reformulated version of its original brewing recipe, but never reclaimed its throne in the beer market. 
Now the company is once again fading from store shelves.
Wisconsin Brewing Company brewmaster Kirby Nelson said the brand would receive a “proper sendoff” with “dignity and respect.”
The brewery plans to produce “the last Schlitz” at its Verona, Wisconsin, facility on Saturday, as Milwaukee-area bars and breweries host farewell parties honoring the historic brand. The final batch will be released June 27 as a limited-edition ode to &#8220;Schlitz&#8217;s glory days.” 
The news comes as alcohol consumption in the United States continues to decline. According to a <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/693362/drinking-rate-new-low-alcohol-concerns-surge.aspx">Gallup poll </a>published last year, the percentage of American adults who say they drink alcohol has fallen to 54%, the lowest on record in Gallup history.

The Trump administration arrested the president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, the Department of Homeland Security said on Thursday, describing the man as a Jordanian terrorist.
Salah Sarsour, who has lived in the United States for over 30 years, was convicted in Israel as a teenager after throwing molotov cocktails at the homes of Israeli soldiers. He has also been <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2017/01/21/womens-march-organizer-recently-met-ex-hamas-operative-has-family-ties-to-terror-group/">accused</a> of helping raise money for Hamas in the 1990s. Sarsour was issued a green card under former President Bill Clinton after lying on his immigration application, Homeland Security said.
Sarsour has been the president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee for the past five years. The society is the largest Islamic group in Wisconsin, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/02/us/ice-milwaukee-muslim-leader-arrest.html">reported</a>. He is also a board member of the American Muslims for Palestine, a group that has faced <a href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/attorney-general-ken-paxton-files-legal-brief-against-american-muslims-palestine-and-other-radical">scrutiny</a> over alleged links to Hamas and its support for intifada in the wake of Hamas&#8217; October 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel.

The Trump administration posted the description and photo of Sarsour on social media in response to Wisconsin Democratic Governor Tony Evers criticizing the administration over Sarsour&#8217;s arrest.
&#8220;Targeting people because of their beliefs or background is wrong,&#8221; Evers said. &#8220;This is clearly about sowing division and fear and doesn&#8217;t help make Wisconsin safer. I’m thinking of Mr. Sarsour&#8217;s family in this difficult time, and I join [Rep. Gwen Moore] 
in calling for his immediate release.&#8221;
Sarsour&#8217;s attorney said the Milwaukee Muslim leader received deportation papers from the Trump administration, which said that the State Department determined Sarsour &#8220;poses an adverse consequence to foreign policy considerations.&#8221; The man&#8217;s attorneys argued that the Trump administration is only targeting Sarsour because of his anti-Israel views, adding that Sarsour has no criminal record in the United States.
Hundreds of Muslims gathered for a rally at the Islamic Society of Milwaukee&#8217;s Salam School gym following the arrest of Sarsour, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel <a href="https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/local/milwaukee/2026/04/02/islamic-society-of-milwaukee-president-salah-sarsour-detained-by-ice/89433525007/">reported</a>. Othman Atta, the executive director of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee mosque told the crowd, &#8220;They want to criminalize advocacy for Palestine. That is the only reason that he is being targeted. There is nothing else.&#8221;
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has vowed to strip the legal status of immigrants found to be &#8220;Hamas supporters.&#8221; Last year, the Trump administration <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/federal-court-rules-against-mahmoud-khalils-release-from-ice-detention">arrested</a> pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, who led anti-Israel and anti-America demonstrations at Columbia University after the October 7 attack. A Wisconsin judge who was suspended earlier this year was convicted Thursday of obstructing Immigration and Customs Enforcement  (ICE) agents during an attempted arrest at a Milwaukee courthouse.
A jury found Hannah Dugan guilty of felony obstruction after officials said that she tried to help an illegal immigrant from Mexico evade immigration authorities back in April. She was found not guilty of a misdemeanor charge of concealing a wanted person. 
“We weren’t trying to make an example out of anyone. This was necessary to hold Judge Dugan accountable because of the actions she took,” <a href="https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/2025/12/18/milwaukee-county-judge-hannah-dugan-found-guilty-of-felony-obstruction/87675227007/">said</a> interim U.S. Attorney Brad Schimel. “There’s not a political aspect to it.”
“Some have sought to make this about a larger political battle. While this case is serious for all involved, it is ultimately about a single day – a single day – in a public courthouse,” he added. 
Dugan’s legal team plans to seek to overturn her conviction. Following her arrest, the Wisconsin Supreme Court suspended her from the bench while the case proceeded. She could face more than five years in prison at sentencing.
Federal investigators <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25919655-1034-001-1-1/">identified</a> the man Dugan helped evade ICE as Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, who was charged in Milwaukee with three counts of battery, domestic abuse, and infliction of physical pain or injury. He had previously been deported in 2013.
According to the FBI, six members of an ICE task force arrived at the courthouse on April 18 to arrest Flores-Ruiz and agreed to wait until after his domestic abuse court appearance. Investigators said Dugan had been informed of the agents’ presence, became “visibly angry,” and called the situation “absurd,” according to witness interviews.

According to charging documents, Dugan directed the ICE arrest team to the chief judge’s chambers before returning to her courtroom and instructing Flores-Ruiz to exit through the “jury door” into a nonpublic area of the courthouse. ICE agents later tracked Flores-Ruiz outside the building and arrested him following a foot chase.
The Trump administration celebrated the verdict. 
“Former Wisconsin state judge Hannah Dugan betrayed her oath and the people she served when she obstructed federal law enforcement during an immigration enforcement operation,” <a href="https://x.com/DAGToddBlanche/status/2001860838907355509">said</a> Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. “Today, a federal jury of her peers found her guilty and sent a clear message: the American people respect law and order. Nobody is above the law. This Department will not tolerate obstruction, will enforce federal immigration law, and will hold criminals to account &#8211; even those who wear robes.”

A federal grand jury indicted a Wisconsin judge on Tuesday for allegedly aiding an illegal immigrant in an attempt to avoid law enforcement.
Authorities arrested Judge Hannah Dugan of the Milwaukee County Circuit Court last month after officials say she tried to help an illegal immigrant evade immigration authorities. Dugan’s indictment charged her with concealing a person from arrest and obstruction of proceedings.
“Judge Hannah C. Dugan has committed herself to the rule of law and the principles of due process for her entire career as a lawyer and a judge,” her lawyers said in a statement, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/13/us/milwaukee-judge-hannah-dugan-immigration.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>. “Judge Dugan asserts her innocence and looks forward to being vindicated in court.”
Dugan’s legal team is expected to enter a plea on Thursday, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/05/13/us-news/wisconsin-judge-hannah-dugan-indicted-over-allegedly-helping-illegal-migrant-evade-ice/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>. The Wisconsin Supreme Court has suspended Dugan from the bench while her case progresses.
Dugan allegedly aided Mexican national Eduardo Flores-Ruiz in his attempts to evade federal authorities.
Law enforcement officials gathered in a hallway outside of Dugan’s courtroom last month waiting for Flores-Ruiz to exit. Dugan confronted the officials while she was “visibly upset and had a confrontational, angry demeanor,” according to the criminal complaint. The judge then led Flores-Ruiz out a different exit from her courtroom instead of the public exit in an attempt to evade law enforcement.
“Despite having been advised of the administrative warrant for the arrest of Flores-Ruiz, Judge Dugan then escorted Flores-Ruiz and his counsel out of the courtroom through the ‘jury door,’ which leads to a nonpublic area of the courthouse,” the indictment says.
The Trump administration has defended Dugan’s arrest as an example of an equal standard of law for all.
“Shame on her,” Attorney General Pam Bondi <a href="https://x.com/charliekirk11/status/1915826498533310904" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> last month. “It was a domestic violence case, of all cases, and she was protecting a criminal defendant over victims of crime.”

The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday suspended the Milwaukee judge accused of helping an illegal immigrant evade federal agents until further notice. 
The court, which has a 4-3 liberal majority, said Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan would be temporarily relieved of duty while she faced federal charges. Dugan was arrested on Friday and charged with obstruction of a federal agency and concealing a person to help them avoid arrest. 
“The court has learned that Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah C. Dugan has been charged with two federal criminal offenses, one of which is a felony and one of which is a misdemeanor,” the court wrote in an order. &#8220;In the exercise of that constitutional authority and in order to uphold the public confidence in the court of this state during the pendency of the criminal proceeding against Judge Dugan, we conclude on our own motion that it is the public interest that she be temporarily relieved of her official duty.”
It added that Dugan would be “temporarily prohibited from exercising the powers of a circuit court judge in the State of Wisconsin” until further “order of the court.” 
Lawyers for Dugan said that they disagreed with the court’s decision. 
&#8220;We are disappointed that the Court acted in unilateral fashion,&#8221; they <a href="https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/politics/2025/04/29/wisconsin-supreme-court-suspends-judge-hannah-dugan-after-charges/83354123007/">said</a>. &#8220;We continue to assert Judge Dugan’s innocence and look forward to her vindication in court.&#8221;

FBI Director Kash Patel said on Friday that federal agents arrested a Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, judge who is suspected of helping an illegal immigrant from Mexico evade Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
Last week, ICE agents showed up at a Milwaukee County Courthouse to arrest a Mexican citizen after a hearing before Judge Hannah Dugan. The judge directed ICE agents to wait in Chief Judge Carl Ashley&#8217;s office and then told the defendant to exit the courtroom through a side door, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel <a href="https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/local/2025/04/25/fbi-investigating-allegations-that-milwaukee-judge-helped-an-immigrant-avoid-ice-arrest-dugan/83250128007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
&#8220;We believe Judge Dugan intentionally misdirected federal agents away from the subject to be arrested in her courthouse, Eduardo Flores Ruiz, allowing the subject — an illegal alien — to evade arrest,&#8221; Patel said in a post that was initially deleted. &#8220;Thankfully, our agents chased down the perp on foot and he’s been in custody since, but the Judge’s obstruction created increased danger to the public.&#8221; It was not immediately clear why Patel chose to initially delete the post, but he <a href="https://x.com/FBIDirectorKash/status/1915800907318468626?t=HrEySSHIGQFX5NqPMVpOpQ&amp;s=19">reposted</a> the same statement a short while later.
The FBI director added that the bureau would share more information &#8220;soon&#8221; and thanked the FBI&#8217;s Milwaukee field office for its work in arresting the judge.
United States Attorney General Pam Bondi also confirmed Dugan&#8217;s arrest in a<a href="https://x.com/AGPamBondi/status/1915799429455516128?t=8UTJOJOvUBSzY_rn896eDg&amp;s=19"> post</a> to X, stating, &#8220;I can confirm that our @FBI agents just arrested Hannah Dugan – a county judge in Milwaukee – for allegedly helping an illegal alien avoid an arrest by @ICEgov. No one is above the law.&#8221; 
According to Chief Judge Ashley, who sent an email to other judges about the incident, ICE agents showed a warrant for the illegal immigrant&#8217;s arrest and followed courthouse protocols. Dugan, who has served on the bench for nine years, responded to that email, however, saying &#8220;a warrant was not presented&#8221; to her.
ICE agents have <a href="https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/breaking/2025/04/25/milwaukee-county-judge-hannah-dugan-arrested-by-feds-at-courthouse/83270885007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">routinely</a> shown up at the Milwaukee County Courthouse in recent weeks with arrest warrants. In the past two months, two suspected illegal immigrants were arrested by federal agents in the courthouse hallways.
During Trump&#8217;s first term in office, a Massachusetts judge was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/25/us/politics/fbi-arrest-judge.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">charged</a> by the Justice Department with obstructing immigration agents after she and a court officer allegedly helped an illegal immigrant sneak out the back door of the courthouse. The federal government later dropped the charges after the judge agreed to go through potential judicial discipline.

FBI Arrests Judge Accused Of ‘Intentionally’ Misdirecting ICE Agents Away From Illegal Immigrant

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/republican-national-committee-rnc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Republican National Committee</a> sued the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/milwaukee" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Milwaukee</a> Election Commission on Monday accusing it of “arbitrarily limiting” poll watchers. 
The <a href="https://prod-static.gop.com/media/documents/MKE_Summons_and_Complaint_filed_no_stamp_1730742648.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lawsuit</a> claims that the city plans to restrict certain precincts in the Democrat-dominated city to just one Republican and one Democratic poll watcher on Election Day. Milwaukee election officials have denied all the allegations contained in the lawsuit. 
“Wisconsin voters deserve to know that there are poll watchers from both parties in the room as votes are being cast and counted on Election Day. The RNC has not recruited and trained thousands of volunteers in the Badger State simply to back down from misguided officials who want to prevent a full measure of poll-watching transparency,” RNC Chair Michael Whatley <a href="https://gop.com/press-release/rnc-sues-milwaukee-for-shutting-out-poll-watchers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “This lawsuit will compel officials in Milwaukee to ensure robust poll watcher access for the Republican Party.”
According to the suit, several Milwaukee precincts including the Serb Hall and the Good Hope Library polling locations, limited poll watchers during early voting in the state. The suit claimed these guidelines violated state law and the RNC asks a judge to block any restrictions on poll watchers. 
“The issue is that when access is arbitrarily restricted, a situation is manufactured where access is meted out largely according to the whims of the chief inspector,” the suit said. “The statutory criteria are mandatory when considering the establishment of observer areas at polling locations, and it is impermissible to establish an arbitrary number of observers that may be present.”
The Milwaukee Election Commission <a href="https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/11/04/rnc-sues-milwaukee-claiming-limits-on-vote-observers/76043420007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">denied</a> the allegations of the suit, saying that it was “maintaining open communications with the RNC.”
&#8220;The [Milwaukee Election Commission] denies the allegation that observers will be arbitrarily limited. However, observers may be subject to reasonable limitations, a power given to chief inspectors under Wisconsin law. At no point was the Republican Party denied the presence of an observer during the in-person absentee voting period, nor will they be denied that presence on Election Day,” Election Commission Executive Director Paulina Gutiérrez said.

In-person early voting in the battleground state of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/wisconsin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wisconsin</a> has jumped by 40% compared to the same time four years ago, elections officials announced.
Wisconsin Election Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe <a href="https://elections.wi.gov/news/rates-person-absentee-voting-nearly-40-percent" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Friday that voters appear to be casting in-person absentee ballots at a record-setting rate. The surge comes as former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have urged their supporters to vote before Election Day. 
“The rate of in-person absentee appears to be at a higher rate than previous elections,” Wolfe said. “Of course, it’s possible that the pace may slow in the days ahead, but the first three days of in-person absentee voting were exceedingly high.”   
Wisconsin, which was decided by less than 1 point in 2016 and 2020, is again expected to be close as both Trump and Harris have focused on the state. 
“We knew this was a high-interest election, and so far, the absentee numbers are certainly demonstrating that,” Wolfe said. “Election officials across the state deserve enormous credit for their efficient and careful handling of the incredible rush of voters they have worked with [this] week.”
Data provided by the commission shows that, so far, 1,039,042 total absentee ballots have been requested, which is already more than the 2008, 2012, and 2016 elections. In 2020, there were around 1,968,471 total absentee ballots requested. 
In the Democrat-dominated urban counties of Dane and Milwaukee, around 108,213 in-person absentee ballots have already been cast. In the traditionally Republican “WOW” (Washington, Ozaukee, and Waukesha) counties around Milwaukee, 86,244 people have cast absentee in-person ballots, according to election commission data. 
The election commission reported that 112,973 mail-in absentee ballots had already been returned in Dane and 123,234 in Milwaukee.

Both Trump and Harris are set to campaign in Wisconsin this week as they seek to win the state’s 10 electoral votes. 
Trump will rally in Green Bay on Wednesday alongside NFL legend Brett Favre and will appear for a rally in Milwaukee on Friday. GOP vice presidential candidate JD Vance will make appearances in Wausau and Racine on Monday. Harris, meanwhile, has a rally scheduled at the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison on Wednesday to appeal to young voters where she will be joined by Mumford &amp; Sons. 
Trump currently leads Harris 48.5% to 48.1% in the Badger State, <a href="https://elections2024.thehill.com/wisconsin/harris-trump-wisconsin/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to a DecisionDesk HQ average of 67 polls.

A <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/wisconsin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wisconsin</a> sheriff is warning that the state will be “screwed” if Vice President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamala Harris</a> defeats former President Donald Trump in November.
The remark was relayed on Thursday by Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt as he <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4WUxeS8Chk&amp;t=4s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">testified</a> during a House Judiciary Committee hearing in Milwaukee on how the border crisis had impacted Wisconsin. Schmidt, the president of the Badger State Sheriffs Association, said that law enforcement around the state were seeing a surge in crime and strain on resources.
&#8220;If Trump doesn’t win this election, we are screwed,” Schmidt said that one of his fellow Wisconsin sheriffs told him, saying another told him &#8220;people don&#8217;t understand how bad it is.&#8221;
Turning to his own experience, Schmidt said his county was now dealing with an increase in drug trafficking from cartels from Mexico.
“I’m fearful for my family. I’m fearful for the family of those that serve with me,” he said of dealing with an influx of cartel violence and drug trafficking.
Additionally, Schmidt said that law enforcement throughout the state struggled when they pulled people over and they had no valid licenses or identification.
“I would love to put up a border around Dodge County or around the state of Wisconsin but we need the federal government to do that at our southern border,” Schmidt said, noting that 1,500 people are killed in Wisconsin every year from fentanyl poisoning.
Schmidt thanked Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) for being at the hearing, but said he was disappointed that Democrat Senator Tammy Baldwin did not attend, asking where she was.

Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney also spoke to lawmakers about the increase in drug trafficking in his county.
“We’re a county of about 100,000 people. We have numerous highways running through the community that makes us a corridor for drug trafficking,” he <a href="https://wislawjournal.com/2024/10/25/wisconsin-da-and-sheriff-testify-before-congress-on-border-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “We’ve seen seizure of drugs with quantities soaring like we have never seen before.”
Toney said that the arrests of illegal immigrants were putting a strain on his county.
“When we have more illegal immigrants that are being prosecuted for crime, sometimes our jails operate at thin margins and counties are having to look at building new jails, not solely because of that, but that’s part of the issue,” he said.
Republicans have made the border a key issue in the 2024 election with both Trump and Senate candidate Eric Hovde campaigning heavily on the issue.

Wisconsin Sheriff: ‘We’re Screwed’ If Trump Doesn’t Win The Election

A conservative legal group warned Monday of a “loophole” that allows thousands of voters in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/wisconsin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wisconsin</a> to cast a ballot without showing identification. 
The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) released a <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2024/09/Indefinitely-Confined-FINAL-1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research report</a> that said there are 144,347 people in the Badger State classified as “indefinitely confined,” meaning that they could cast an absentee ballot without showing ID. Indefinitely confined rates skyrocketed during the 2020 election and allowed tens of thousands to cast absentee ballots. 
“Wisconsin has a strong voter ID requirement in place, but there is one loophole that is ripe for exploitation. In Wisconsin, voters can claim they are ‘Indefinitely Confined,’ a status that allows a voter to continually receive an absentee ballot without ever showing an ID,” the report from WILL researcher Will Flanders said. 
Flanders said that while the number of voters classified as “indefinitely confined” had come down from 2020, it was still 116% higher than it was back in 2016 as of July 2024. He added that there were still thousands of voters who should be removed from the list under state law. 
“Per state law, clerks are to remove voters if they vote in-person or do not vote in any election. Those voters must sign and return a form to retain that status,” the report noted. 
According to Flanders, voters who should have received a notice of potential removal from the &#8220;indefinitely confined&#8221; list include 24,800 who didn’t vote in the April election, 2,788 who haven’t voted at all since 2020, and 2,595 who voted in person in April.
The areas with the highest number of indefinitely confined voters are the Democratic strongholds of Milwaukee and Madison followed by more divided areas like Green Bay and Kenosha. 
Indefinitely confined voter status was designed to help voters who are elderly or disabled and unable to make it to the polls. Voters just have to select that they fit the requirements for being indefinitely confined.

“Under this statute, voters decide for themselves whether they meet the requirements and can receive an absentee ballot in perpetuity if they continue to vote in every election,” the report said. “Most critically, voters can receive ballots in this way without providing a photo ID. In Wisconsin, you only need to show a photo ID when you vote—not when you register.”

During the 2020 election, election officials in Madison and Milwaukee said that effectively all voters could claim indefinitely confined status because of COVID. The Wisconsin Supreme Court <a href="https://www.wisbar.org/NewsPublications/InsideTrack/Pages/Article.aspx?Volume=0&amp;ArticleID=28110#:~:text=In%20Republican%20Party%20of%20Wisconsin%20v.%20Dane%20County%2C,can%20declare%20persons%20indefinitely%20confined%20for%20any%20reason." target="_blank" rel="noopener">later ruled</a> against this guidance, after the election. 
WILL has argued that there should be tighter guidelines for receiving indefinitely confined status and sent out letters to 15 communities across the state to see if they were complying with state law about cleaning up their rolls. 
“Confidence in our elections continues to be dangerously low in Wisconsin and across the country,” Flanders told The Daily Wire. “Voter ID is a popular and well-executed way to keep our elections secure and free of fraud. While the Governor refused to fix this loophole in the years since 2020, efforts must be made by local election clerks to resolve it as much as possible.”
Wisconsin is expected to be one of the key battleground states that may determine the outcome of the 2024 election with polls showing a close race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
