In a new <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/appreciating-american-exceptionalism-mike-rowe-member-exclusive">“Sunday Special” interview</a>, Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro spoke to television host Mike Rowe about blue-collar jobs and patriotism.
Rowe is famous for hosting the Discovery Channel show &#8220;Dirty Jobs&#8221; in the early 2000s. His new <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ59RsDoPQE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">movie</a>, &#8220;Something to Stand For&#8221; pulls stories about American heroes and is hitting theaters at the end of June.
During their hour-long conversation, Shapiro asked Rowe what inspired him to make his patriotic movie.
&#8220;I&#8217;m real clear when I talk about it that I didn&#8217;t write it for Republicans or Democrats or liberals or conservatives. I wrote it for people who still see themselves first and foremost as Americans,&#8221; Rowe said.
Rowe lamented that &#8220;anti-Americanism&#8221; has &#8220;crept into the conversation.&#8221;
&#8220;It is unfortunate that there is a cohort today that fundamentally sees themselves as something else,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The movie&#8217;s not for them. They&#8217;re welcome to come.&#8221;
Rowe expressed that he was dismayed to see people dressing American statues up in Hamas garb and thought, &#8220;What are we doing?&#8221; In his movie, Rowe visits Washington, D.C. to appreciate the national monuments.
&#8220;I mean, to truly understand how amazing America is, you really do have to understand history and that there is an entire rest of the world out there, and the rest of the world has an enormous number of truly crappy places, places you would never want to live with awful values, with people who believe precisely the opposite of what we believe,&#8221; Shapiro responded.
Shapiro also asked Rowe about what he is hearing from blue-collar workers in the current economy, with sky-high inflation compared to before the pandemic.
Rowe emphasized that there is a distinction in the blue-collar world between blue-collar workers and entrepreneurs, who are &#8220;killing it&#8221; and have &#8220;more work than they can do.&#8221;
&#8220;The math goes like this,&#8221; Rowe said. &#8220;Every year five skilled tradespeople retire. For every five who retire, two replace them &#8230; It&#8217;s been like that for nearly 20 years. We&#8217;re seeing an incredible lack of interest and enthusiasm around these skilled trades.&#8221;
However, the entrepreneurs like small mechanical contracting companies with two or three vans and six workers are winning in this economy, Rowe said.
&#8220;It&#8217;s true. Inflation, super bad,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The cost of college, an enormous problem. The unintended consequences of forgiving student loans, all that stuff is part and parcel of the madness that&#8217;s happening right now.&#8221;
&#8220;But the entrepreneur, who took the time to master a skill that&#8217;s in demand is crushing it in this economy,&#8221; Rowe said.

&#8220;If I had a kid at Columbia, I’d be livid,&#8221; Rowe continued. &#8220;It’s simply mind-boggling that the president of this university would rather consign her students to another crucible of remote learning, than permanently expel the protesters. I mean, seriously, what does it take to get expelled from Columbia?&#8221;
Rowe went on to quote several of the Jewish students who said they had been berated by protesters. &#8220;&#8216;They yelled at us to go back to Poland, said we have no culture, and chanted, Strike, strike Tel Aviv,&#8217; said one terrified student,&#8221; Rowe quoted. &#8220;Followed by, &#8216;Burn Tel Aviv to the ground,&#8217; &#8216;Go Hamas, we love you, we support your rockets, too.'&#8221;
&#8220;In a now-infamous image, one demonstrator appeared before a group of counter-protesters holding Israeli and American flags with a sign pointing in their direction that read, &#8216;Al-Qasam’s next targets.&#8217; That’s what you get for $68,000 a year at Columbia – an administration who cowers in the face of thugs and bullies, and a university president who would rather make your kids try to learn off campus, than take a truly hard line with those students calling for the murder of Jews,&#8221; Rowe continued. &#8220;For the love of God, expel them. “Dirty Jobs” host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-rowe">Mike Rowe</a> weighed in on the future of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/colleges">higher education</a>, saying he believes <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gen-z">Gen Z</a> will become &#8220;the next toolbelt generation.”
The 62-year-old recently appeared on Fox News’ &#8220;One Nation with Brian Kilmeade” to discuss a recent Wall Street Journal report highlighting increased enrollment into vocational training programs.
Kilmeade asked Rowe to comment on the data, which comes from the National Student Clearinghouse. It showed a 16% increase in overall enrollment for vocational-focused community colleges compared to 2022. The Journal also noted an increase of 23% for students pursuing construction jobs and a 7% rise in students enrolled in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and vehicle repair.
While the “Dirty Jobs” star said he wasn’t “ready for the victory lap” after seeing the data, he said that he believes Gen Z is more willing to consider trades, which he believes is positive.
“The color of collars is no longer the thing it used to be,” Rowe said, referencing the classification of blue-collar versus white-collar workers. “I just don’t think it matters.”
“The idea that the generation that has become the biggest target for entitlements and a lack of work ethic… I mean, these guys are an easy target. They’re snowflakes, essentially. But… we’re the clouds from which the snowflakes fell. And whatever you want to say about Gen Z, they will be the next toolbelt generation. Because the evidence demands a verdict,” he continued. 
The Discovery Channel host went on to mention the exorbitant cost of college as a significant driver for the switch. 
“And these kids have been around, and they’re seeing $94,000 a year at Tufts,” he went on. “They&#8217;re seeing all of the craziness… Brown and Dartmouth and Harvard. They&#8217;re seeing a $52 billion endowment at Harvard. They&#8217;re seeing all the craziness that&#8217;s constantly in the headlines,&#8221; Rowe said. &#8220;And they&#8217;re just saying, &#8216;Look, why do I want to start a career in a major I haven&#8217;t even declared yet and go that far into debt to pursue a job that probably doesn&#8217;t even exist, when we got 10,000 other jobs over here… that don&#8217;t require a four-year degree?'&#8221;
At another point in the conversation, Rowe mentioned how he finds it interesting that in the past, people worried about blue-collar jobs being replaced with technology, but now, with the popularity of AI, more are concerned about white-collar industries changing.

&#8220;The automation thing, you know, it&#8217;s funny — not ‘ha-ha’ funny, but interesting that the idea that the robots are coming to displace all of these so-called blue-collar jobs that have been around for 15 years,&#8221; Rowe said. &#8220;Now it&#8217;s AI, and the target is more white-collar jobs.&#8221;
&#8220;Look, plumbers are not going to be outsourced,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Electricians, steam fitters, pipe fitters, the people my foundation tries to assist — they have a level of job security that the article in the Journal is referencing, and it&#8217;s a big deal, because those jobs have always been here for the last 20 years, as long as I&#8217;ve been doing this, they&#8217;ve been open, and it&#8217;s starting to tip where we&#8217;re literally turning a tanker around with regard to perceptions.&#8221;

Several people blasted the former TV host’s criticism of Harvard, and Rowe hit back, nailing why they were wrong.
One person wrote, &#8220;Segregation is not optional. The Affinity celebrations are. Why do you care? Why can&#8217;t we celebrate how we choose?&#8221;
&#8220;No one is saying you can&#8217;t celebrate the way you choose, or with the people you prefer to be around,&#8221; Rowe replied. &#8220;I&#8217;m just saying that organized celebrations sponsored by an Ivy League institution that revolve around the color of a person&#8217;s skin are so&#8230;1960…&#8221;
Another wrote, &#8220;Mike, You&#8217;ve never been made to feel like an outsider based on your inherent identity and it shows glaringly. You&#8217;ve always been on the inside and at the very top of our society&#8217;s multi-tiered pyramid that has masculine, heterosexual, white, cis-gender men in charge of most things….&#8221;
Rowe replied, &#8220;I&#8217;m not responsible for the way other people treat other people. I&#8217;m only responsible for the way I treat other people. And I choose to treat other people as if their color and ethnicity don&#8217;t matter…I&#8217;ll continue to do my best to ignore the things that don&#8217;t matter, and celebrate the things that do. I&#8217;d encourage you to do the same.&#8221;

The &#8220;Dirty Jobs&#8221; host recently sat down with <a href="https://x.com/B7grWinning/status/1768541177941238052?s=20">CNN</a> anchor Erin Burnett, where he confirmed that he was on RFK Jr.&#8217;s list of potential vice presidential candidates, the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/03/15/us-news/dirty-jobs-host-mike-rowe-confirms-rfk-jr-called-him-about-vp-role/">New York Post</a> reported.
&#8220;Actually, I ran into him about six months ago in Dallas, totally serendipitously, and we exchanged information and he reached out about a month ago,&#8221; Rowe said.
&#8220;At some point, he asked me if I would ever consider running for public office, and I spit my coffee back into my cup and I said, &#8216;Seriously?'&#8221; he added, noting the &#8220;serious conversation&#8221; the two had.
But when the interview turned to others RFK Jr. had picked for VP like New York Jets QB <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rfk-defends-possible-vp-choice-aaron-rodgers-hes-been-hammered-by-the-press" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aaron Rodgers</a> — whose past comments have caused headlines — Rowe showed his media skills.

&#8220;Dirty Jobs&#8221; host Mike Rowe blasted the billionaires attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, accusing them of &#8220;hypocrisy&#8221; for blaming the &#8220;everyday guy&#8221; for &#8220;all of the trouble in the world.&#8221;
During an appearance on Fox News&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQ3QvOogiRk">The Ingraham Angle</a>&#8221; on Wednesday, Rowe was asked what he thought about the &#8220;callous&#8221; and &#8220;dismissive attitude&#8221; of the elites at the forum over jobs &#8220;they don&#8217;t approve of,&#8221; such as those in the fossil fuel industry.
&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to maintain a consistent level of outrage,&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mike-rowe-says-feds-revoked-his-filming-permit-received-call-claiming-it-was-pulled-for-his-personal-politics">Rowe</a> replied. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been at this for 15 years. The foundation I run is focused on real jobs that require an actual skill that truly exists.&#8221;
Rowe said when he looks at the coverage of Davos, he doesn&#8217;t understand &#8220;why anybody is taking any of it seriously.&#8221;
&#8220;These are billionaires, and very, very, very wealthy people who fly privately to this resort to basically blame the everyday guy for all of the trouble in the world,&#8221; Rowe explained.
&#8220;I just don&#8217;t know how a reasonable person can see through the hypocrisy to even for a moment seriously consider the validity of anything you just played,&#8221; he added, referencing a clip that showed elites espousing the need to &#8220;close the emissions gap,&#8221; phase out coal, and end the &#8220;addiction to fossil fuels.&#8221;

Rowe made the remarks during a brief interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson during the network&#8217;s &#8220;Patriot Awards.&#8221;
&#8220;So, I&#8217;m wrong about as much as I am right. And it&#8217;s for that reason, I hate to say, &#8216;I told you so,&#8217; out loud, ever,&#8221; Rowe said. &#8220;But for 15 years, my foundation has been talking about this slow, sort of, unraveling of what we loosely call work ethic, whatever that means.&#8221;
&#8220;And I mean, last week, there was an article in The New York Times called something like how to combat the assault on modern work, and I thought it was gonna be an article about coal miners or crab fishermen or, you know, big tough jobs where the danger is real. It wasn&#8217;t. It was an article about everything from paper cuts to the non-existent pet bereavement policies that are being deemed harsh, I&#8217;m not making it up,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;And so we are, we&#8217;re in a place where 7 million able-bodied men are not only not working between the ages of 25 and [inaudible]. 7 million able-bodied men are not only not working, they&#8217;re affirmatively not looking for a job. That&#8217;s never happened in peacetime, ever.&#8221;
Rowe said that people are focusing on the wrong thing by looking at the unemployment rate when they should be looking at the number of able-bodied people who do not want to work.
Rowe said that an economist he spoke to told him the thing that those men are doing is spending &#8220;on average, over 2,000 hours a year on screens.&#8221;

That&#8217;s why maybe you have to use the drive thru because no one&#8217;s inside the restaurant. But not only is the way we work changing, our attitudes toward work are changing, and a lot of people seem to have contempt for work all of the sudden, signs are everywhere, you probably noticed them. Mike Rowe has spent a life thinking about work. He&#8217;s host of &#8216;How America Works&#8217; on Fox Business Network. He joins us on the set of the Patriot Awards, of course, for a long time, the immortal host of &#8220;Dirty Jobs,&#8221; and I think our most frequent and popular guest. Anyway, thank you so much for coming back. Obviously you have noticed the change in attitude toward work, some people sort of mocking the idea of work, what&#8217;s your response to that?
MIKE ROWE: Yes. So, I&#8217;m wrong about as much as I am right. And it&#8217;s for that reason, I hate to say, &#8216;I told you so,&#8217; out loud, ever. That&#8217;s never happened in peacetime, ever. And economists like Nick Eberstadt take a dim view of it, they&#8217;re worried. And they&#8217;re trying to inject that into the conversation at a time when we&#8217;re still looking at the unemployment number as the true harbinger of what&#8217;s really going on, but it&#8217;s not. In his view, it&#8217;s a depression era artifact, we&#8217;re just looking at the wrong thing, we&#8217;re looking at not what it means to have a bunch of people unemployed, but what does it mean, to have a bunch of opportunity that nobody gives a damn about? That&#8217;s a different conversation. And it&#8217;s complicated to have, because while that dynamic is clear and present, so too, is the fact that a lot of big companies in Silicon Valley are going to lay off a lot of people. And now you&#8217;re gonna have a bunch of people who aren&#8217;t trained for the jobs that do exist, sort of competing with people who have affirmatively taken themselves out of the workforce entirely. And final point, I asked Nick, &#8216;what are they doing? What are they doing with their time, these able bodied men?  On average, over 2,000 hours a year on screens.
CARLSON: So they&#8217;re just totally hypnotized by a digital world? So at some point, the pilot shortage, for example, well known, one of the reasons it&#8217;s hard to get your plane on time or the cost is going up is because aren&#8217;t enough pilots. But that&#8217;s true for a lot of different jobs. So like, when does it start to grind to a halt?
ROWE: Well, you know, pilots get the press because it&#8217;s the pilot. But when you really follow the delays down, you&#8217;ll find it in the mechanics, you&#8217;ll find it in the flight attendants. How many airports have you been in when the crews simply couldn&#8217;t make it to the next plane? It&#8217;s because they&#8217;re working with 70% of the workforce they had three years ago. You know, 4 million fewer people are in the workforce today than before the lock downs and 4 million more jobs have opened up. It&#8217;s almost a perfect mirror image and the reflection is kind of hideous.
CARLSON: And it&#8217;s just sad because work is meaning as you have spent your life showing. Mike Rowe, the great Mike Rowe.</blockquote>

&#8220;Dirty Jobs&#8221; host Mike Rowe explained to Megyn Kelly that there&#8217;s &#8220;7 million able-bodied men&#8221; who aren&#8217;t looking for work and he&#8217;s said it&#8217;s not a &#8220;skills gap&#8221; but instead a &#8220;will gap&#8221; as too many appear to be addicted to their screens.
During his recent appearance on Sirius XM&#8217;s &#8220;The Megyn Kelly Show&#8221; <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftCPAnHPjZE">podcast</a>, the host asked <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-rowe">Rowe</a> what he thought was the reason why millions of men in America between the ages of 25-54 aren&#8217;t only unemployed, but aren&#8217;t even looking for a job. The TV host said that there isn&#8217;t just one reason but several, as he listed what he believes has led to this &#8220;lopsided&#8221; workforce in America, calling it &#8220;troubling.&#8221;
Rowe said to him it&#8217;s not a matter of &#8220;labor disputes&#8221; when it comes to the lack of blue-collar workers but a myriad of things starting with removing shop class in the 70s and 80s from high school. He explained, &#8220;It&#8217;s not a coincidence today that those vocations are the very jobs currently lacking in the market.&#8221; Combine that with the push around the same time to get people to go get higher education, which he said &#8220;we b****ed it all up.&#8221;

&#8220;To talk about the existence of 11 million jobs that virtually nobody wants juxtaposed with 7 million able-bodied men between the ages of 25-54 who are not only not working, that&#8217;s not the problem,&#8221; Rowe said. &#8220;They are affirmatively not looking for jobs. So you push all of that together, it really does make for a very disappointing kind of bouillabaisse.&#8221;
&#8220;College needed a PR campaign back in the 70s and 80s,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We genuinely needed more people to go in pursuit of some of this thing we call higher education. But we b****ed it all up. We didn&#8217;t just make the case for a four year school. We made the case at the expense of all other forms of education.&#8221;
&#8220;So, now there&#8217;s stigmas and stereotypes &#8230; all kinds of bull crap that keeps people from pursuing many of these 11 million open jobs right now that paradoxically are the very jobs that make civilized life for the rest of us,&#8221; the &#8220;Dirty Jobs&#8221; host continued.
When <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mike-rowe-says-feds-revoked-his-filming-permit-received-call-claiming-it-was-pulled-for-his-personal-politics">Rowe</a> was pressed further by Kelly why those 7 million guys are &#8220;sitting on the sidelines,&#8221; he said he&#8217;s not so sure there&#8217;s a &#8220;skills gap&#8221; anymore, but a &#8220;will gap.&#8221;
&#8220;What the research indicates &#8230; a majority of that cohort of people we&#8217;re describing right now, these men, spend between 2,000 to 2,400 hours a year on screens,&#8221; the TV host shared. &#8220;That&#8217;s what they&#8217;re doing. Now the average work week extrapolated over a year is 2,080 hours. That&#8217;s their full-time job. They&#8217;re on their screens.&#8221;
&#8220;There&#8217;s something else going on in the country,&#8221; he added. &#8220;It&#8217;s unpleasant. It&#8217;s troubling. It&#8217;s important. And we have to talk about it. We have to find a way to stop looking at the workforce in terms of people who are unemployed and see it instead through the lens of the numbers of people who have affirmatively chosen not to work.&#8221;
