As President-elect Donald Trump continues to build his Cabinet, Americans are waiting for him to appoint someone to one of the most important positions in the administration: attorney general.
Trump&#8217;s pick for attorney general will be one of the most talked about appointments heading into his second term. In his first term, Trump appointed Jeff Sessions, who served as AG for two years, and then appointed Bill Barr, who served during the final two years of Trump&#8217;s time in the White House.
Multiple names are being floated for potential replacements for President Joe Biden&#8217;s Attorney General Merrick Garland.
<h3>Mark Paoletta</h3>
Attorney Mark Paoletta served in the Trump administration as chief counsel and assistant to Vice President Mike Pence before moving to general counsel of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Paoletta is a close friend of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife Ginni, and he played an important <a href="https://www.heritage.org/courts/commentary/the-real-clarence-thomas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">role</a> in Thomas&#8217; confirmation to the High Court.
From 1997 to 2007, Paoletta served as Chief Counsel for Oversight and Investigations for the House Energy and Commerce Committee. He now serves on Trump&#8217;s transition team and is helping craft Justice Department policy for the second Trump administration, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/whos-who-trumps-short-list-attorney-general" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>. In an X <a href="https://x.com/MarkPaoletta/status/1855977334106390915" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post</a> on Monday, Paoletta told &#8220;career DOJ employees&#8221; who &#8220;won’t implement President Trump’s program in good faith&#8221; to step down.
&#8220;Those employees who engage in so-called &#8216;resistance&#8217; against the duly-elected President’s lawful agenda would be subverting American democracy,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Finally, those that take such actions would be subject to disciplinary measures, including termination. I look forward to President Trump’s team Making America Great Again, especially at the Department of Justice and the FBI.&#8221;
<h3>John Ratcliffe</h3>
John Ratcliffe served as Trump&#8217;s Director of National Intelligence for a year at the end of the president&#8217;s first term. Before taking that role, Ratcliffe served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, and was elected to Congress in 2015, where he served for five years as the House representative from Texas&#8217;s 4th District.
Ratcliffe was <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/new-spy-chief-pick-ratcliffe-made-his-name-during-the-trump-inquiries-by-backing-the-president/2019/07/28/f92658ce-b185-11e9-951e-de024209545d_story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outspoken</a> in his criticism of the FBI and Robert Mueller&#8217;s special counsel investigation into the spurious claims of Trump&#8217;s ties to Russia. Shortly before the 2020 election, Ratcliffe declassified information about the 2016 election that suggested Hillary Clinton&#8217;s campaign approved a plan to “stir up a scandal” against Trump that tied him to the Russians, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/29/us/politics/john-ratcliffe-russian-disinformation.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Ratcliffe has remained quiet on the rumors surrounding a potential AG appointment.
<h3>Sen. Mike Lee</h3>
Utah Senator Mike Lee has been one of the most conservative lawmakers in Washington, D.C., for over a decade. Lee has an extensive legal background, serving as a clerk for the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, clerking for Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, and working as an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Utah. He served as Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Jr.&#8217;s general counsel before his election to the Senate in 2010.
Lee won his third term in office in 2022. He was a strong critic of Trump in 2016, <a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-bde9ab70ff2a41ef8e779b565421876e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voting</a> for independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin. Lee, however, quickly became a staunch Trump ally of Trump. Six years later, Trump backed Lee&#8217;s re-election bid when McMullin challenged him for the Senate in an election that Lee won by over 10 points.
Lee <a href="https://thedispatch.com/article/mike-lees-journey-from-trump-critic-to-trump-supporter/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The Dispatch earlier this year that after Trump started governing in 2017, Lee saw that &#8220;he aligned a lot more with Republican ideals than I expected. In some areas, I was particularly surprised how well things went.&#8221;
Asked about a possible role in the Trump administration last week, Lee <a href="https://www.deseret.com/politics/2024/11/07/sen-mike-lee-trump-administration/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Deseret News, &#8220;I have the job I want.&#8221;
&#8220;And I look forward to working in the next Congress and with President Trump and his team to implement his agenda and the reform agenda that Republicans have offered and campaigned on, and it’s going to be an exciting time,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We’ve got a lot of work to do.&#8221;
<h3>Judge Aileen Cannon</h3>
ABC News <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/judge-tossed-trumps-classified-docs-case-list-proposed/story?id=114997807" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> last month that District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, who threw out the classified documents case against Trump earlier this year, appeared on a Trump ream document as a potential attorney general pick. The document was reportedly written by Trump&#8217;s top advisers. Cannon <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-dismisses-trump-classified-documents-case" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dismissed</a> the classified documents case against Trump in July, ruling that &#8220;Special Counsel Smith’s appointment violates the Appointments Clause of the U.S. Constitution.&#8221;
Cannon, whom Trump appointed in 2020, was born in Colombia and grew up in Miami. From 2008 to 2009, she clerked for Steven Colloton, a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in Iowa. Cannon was then an assistant United States <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/08/28/trump-special-master-fbi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attorney</a> for the Southern District of Florida from 2013 to 2020.
Cannon also presided over the case of Ryan Routh, who was charged with attempting to assassinate Trump at his West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course in September. Routh&#8217;s lawyers have <a href="https://www.msnbc.com/deadline-white-house/deadline-legal-blog/aileen-cannon-attorney-general-trump-report-rcna176787" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asked</a> Cannon to recuse herself from the case, citing her potential appointment to a higher position in the second Trump administration.
<h3>Matthew Whitaker</h3>
A candidate who already has some experience in the position is former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, whom Trump tapped to fill the position for a short time between the stints of Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr.
Whitaker served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa from 2004 until 2009. He then worked as a managing partner of a general practice law firm in Des Moines, Iowa, from 2009 to 2017. Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions appointed Whitaker to serve as his chief of staff in 2017. After Sessions resigned in November 2018, Whitaker was tapped by Trump to serve as Acting Attorney General, a position he held until February 2019 when Barr took over.

Whitaker did not tell <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/whos-who-trumps-short-list-attorney-general" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> whether he was interested in the position in the second Trump administration, saying, &#8220;[Trump&#8217;s] going to want someone who he knows, likes and trusts. He&#8217;s going to want someone who was there from the beginning.&#8221;
<h3>Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey</h3>
Another name floated for AG is the recently appointed Missouri Attorney General, Andrew Bailey. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson appointed Bailey after former Missouri AG Eric Schmitt ran for Senate and won in 2022. As the state&#8217;s chief law enforcement officer, Bailey has challenged the Biden administration in dozens of lawsuits including <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/missouri-accuses-biden-admin-of-diversion-tactics-hiding-info-about-illegal-migrants-in-lawsuit" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accusing</a> the federal government of &#8220;hid[ing] information from Americans&#8221; about &#8220;flying of illegal immigrants into Missouri.&#8221;
Bailey served as general counsel of the Missouri Department of Corrections and as general counsel for Parson. As attorney general, Bailey has also gone after the abortion drug <a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/10/22/missouri-mifepristone-lawsuit-andrew-bailey-teen-pregnancy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mifepristone</a>, arguing that it is too dangerous and seeking to ensure “long-standing safety requirements” are put in place for the drug.
In 2023, Bailey announced new restrictions on gender procedures for adults and children. The new rules required people to undergo 18 months of therapy before receiving gender treatments.
As Trump continues to announce cabinet positions following his election victory, the attorney general pick could come at any time. Trump&#8217;s pick then must be confirmed by a majority of the Senate, which will be under Republican control beginning in January.

Senator Mike Lee sharply criticized Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell Thursday for reportedly offering &#8220;scathing&#8221; remarks about former President Donald Trump and the &#8220;MAGA movement.&#8221;
McConnell slams Trump as a &#8220;narcissist&#8221; and a &#8220;sleazeball&#8221; in his forthcoming biography, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/23/politics/mcconnell-trump-gop-new-book/index.html">according to CNN</a>, adding that Trump has “done a lot of damage to our party’s image and our ability to compete.” Speaking to The Daily Wire Thursday, Lee slammed the Kentucky Republican for his comments.
&#8220;Openly hurting him, it&#8217;s just baffling to me,&#8221; Lee said. &#8220;I cannot figure it out&#8230; number one, he&#8217;s a Republican senator. Number two, he&#8217;s the Senate Republican leader. Number three, we are less than two weeks away from a general election in which these guys are in tight races.&#8221;
McConnell reportedly also says that “Trump is appealing to people who haven’t been as successful as other people and providing an excuse for that, that these more successful people have somehow been cheated, and you don’t deserve to think of yourself as less successful because things haven’t been fair.&#8221;
&#8220;If senate Republican leaders are going to come out and do these sorts of things, we need to have a conversation about it,&#8221; Lee said. &#8220;And we especially need to have a conversation between those who are running for Senate Republican leadership posts.&#8221;

&#8220;I find it troubling,&#8221; he told The Daily Wire on Thursday, &#8220;especially because, to me, it feels like trolling for assassins.&#8221;
&#8220;When you&#8217;re constantly calling him Hitler,&#8221; Lee said, &#8220;that&#8217;s really dangerous.&#8221;

Lee was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-89-year-old-woman-convicted-faces-over-a-decade-in-prison-for-peaceful-pro-life-protest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reacting to the news</a> that Edl and six other pro-life activists were convicted in federal court in Detroit late Tuesday morning of charges brought against them by the Biden administration accusing them of conspiracy against rights and violating the FACE Act. They could now be sentenced to over a decade in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines upon sentencing.
Edl, a devout Christian, was rounded up as a child and forced into a concentration camp by the forces of Yugoslavian communist dictator Josip Broz Tito in the aftermath of World War II. She later immigrated to the United States and became very active in pro-life activism across the country.

The other pro-lifers convicted on Tuesday include Chester Gallagher, Heather Idoni, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pro-life-father-facing-11-years-in-prison-says-biden-doj-is-targeting-conservative-christians">Joel Curry</a>, Justin Phillips, Cal Zastrow, and his daughter Eva Zastrow.
The charges stemmed from a peaceful demonstration, which the defendants called a “Rescue,” where the group sat and stood outside of the Northland Family Planning Clinic in Sterling Heights, Michigan, alongside a group of other pro-life activists. Edl and Idoni were convicted on an additional charge for a pro-life protest they attended at the Women’s Health Clinic in Saginaw, Michigan.
Each of the defendants pointed to their faith in Jesus as what motivated them to go to Northland to try persuade women from getting abortions.
Concluding arguments were made on Monday before the case was handed to the jury, which started deliberating Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. local time. The jury, composed of seven women and five men, took around 3.5 hours to find them all guilty.
A sentencing date has not yet been set as the lawyers have an opportunity to make briefings to Judge Matthew Leitman, who oversaw the case, to dismiss it.

A group of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate</a> Republicans vowed to do what they can to stand in the way of President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a>&#8216;s priorities after the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/verdict-trump-found-guilty-on-all-charges-in-hush-money-case" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guilty verdict</a> in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a>&#8216;s New York hush money trial, marking the first time a former U.S. president has been convicted of a crime.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) revealed on Friday that he and seven of his GOP colleagues — Sens. Rick Scott (R-FL), J.D. Vance (R-OH), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), and Roger Marshall (R-KS) — had signed onto a pledge.
Vance and Rubio are <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-surrounds-himself-with-potential-vps-at-mar-a-lago?topStoryPosition=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly in the mix</a> to become Trump&#8217;s running mate in the 2024 presidential election. Scott is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rick-scott-joins-race-for-senate-gop-leader" target="_blank" rel="noopener">campaigning</a> to become the next leader of the Senate GOP, along with Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Senate Minority Whip Sen. John Thune (R-SD).
&#8220;The White House has made a mockery of the rule of law and fundamentally altered our politics in un-American ways,&#8221; <a href="https://www.rickscott.senate.gov/2024/5/following-democrats-mockery-of-u-s-judicial-system-sen-rick-scott-joins-sen-mike-lee-colleagues-in-pledge-against-white-house-s-partisan-priorities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the pledge says</a>. &#8220;As a Senate Republican conference, we are unwilling to aid and abet this White House in its project to tear this country apart.&#8221;
The pledge continues, &#8220;To that end, we will not 1) allow any increase to non-security related funding for this administration, or any appropriations bill which funds partisan lawfare; 2) vote to confirm this administration’s political and judicial appointees; and 3) allow expedited consideration and passage of Democrat legislation or authorities that are not directly relevant to the safety of the American people.&#8221;

Later that day, Lee <a href="https://x.com/SenMikeLee/status/1796650441545073147" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that the list of GOP senators who joined the pledge had grown. Two other members—Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Ron Johnson (R-WI)—added their signatures, giving the group <a href="https://www.senate.gov/history/partydiv.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nearly one-fifth representation</a> in the Republican caucus of the upper chamber. Despite the increase in numbers, a fraction of the minority party is limited in what they can do alone to stop Democrat leadership from making forward progress.
A jury returned a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/verdict-trump-found-guilty-on-all-charges-in-hush-money-case" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guilty verdict</a> against Trump on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to allegedly cover up payments in a bid to conceal a tryst with adult film star Stormy Daniels as part of a “catch-and-kill” scheme to influence the 2016 election. Trump, who denied the affair and pleaded not guilty to the charges, said he would be <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/white-house-race-plunges-into-uncharted-territory-trump-awaits-july-sentencing-2024-05-31/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;appealing this scam.&#8221;</a> Sentencing is scheduled for July 11.

Johnson made the comment earlier this month while <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGeQRt1WDRo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">promoting companion bills</a>, dubbed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, that <a href="https://roy.house.gov/media/press-releases/rep-roy-leads-fight-save-american-elections" target="_blank" rel="noopener">would require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration</a>.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), whose version of the legislation <a href="https://cha.house.gov/_cache/files/9/4/9481c1c3-fbbe-43da-be01-8160304debbd/7B3AAB700E4EC1DBC9A2D00FF651F2B8.notice-5.23.24.pdf.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">may be considered</a> by a committee later this week, fired back at PolitiFact on X while taking a shot at the Biden administration for its handling of the migrant crisis.
&#8220;Whether it’s at the DMV or welfare offices, non-citizens have myriad opportunities to register to vote, as non-citizens are obviously eligible for government benefits under current federal and state policies,&#8221; Roy <a href="https://x.com/RepChipRoy/status/1792963711805853842" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a thread on X.
&#8220;Biden&#8217;s mass release of millions of illegal aliens into the U.S. – including over 1 million via parole – will only make this worse,&#8221; he added.
&#8220;But even if the ideological operatives at Politi-&#8216;fact&#8217; want to torture the statistics to say that this somehow isn&#8217;t a problem, then nobody should mind if we put safeguards in place to prevent it from becoming one — that is, unless you actually want noncitizens voting in federal elections,&#8221; Roy concluded.

The senator also responded through his <a href="https://x.com/BasedMikeLee/status/1792981567591059714" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;BasedMikeLee&#8221; personal account</a>.
&#8220;States are prohibited, under [the Supreme Court&#8217;s] interpretation of the [National Voter Registration Act], from requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;So yes, while it is in fact &#8216;illegal for noncitizens to vote&#8217; in federal elections, that’s not the end of the matter,&#8221; Lee added. &#8220;#PassTheSAVEAct.&#8221;

Four Republican senators are pressing the Biden administration for answers over <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/slap-in-the-face-biden-blasted-after-giving-certain-illegal-immigrants-access-to-gov-health-care" target="_blank" rel="noopener">its announcement</a> that it would make some immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally eligible for government-backed health care coverage.
In a <a href="https://www.blackburn.senate.gov/services/files/017C5FB5-7DB1-4197-AB41-BEE951E25AB4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra on Wednesday, Sens. Marsha Blackburn (TN), Kevin Cramer (ND), Mike Lee (UT), and J.D. Vance (OH) demanded that Becerra provide more details about a plan announced on Friday to allow immigrants with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) status to enroll in Obamacare. The Biden administration estimated that the coverage could impact around 100,000 DACA recipients. 
“At a time when our nation has endured record numbers of illegal immigrants crossing the southern border, this announcement sends a clear message: fixing the manufactured border crisis is the last thing that the Biden administration wants to do,” the Republicans wrote. “In Biden’s economy, inflation is on the rise while job growth is slowing down. Unemployment is at a two-year high, and foreign born workers are flooding the workforce.”
“When America’s borders are open and our citizens’ wallets are hurting, the last thing this administration should be doing is providing free health care coverage to immigrants,” the letter added. “The American people deserve answers on such a disastrous policy.”
The decision was made possible by a Biden administration rule changing the definition of “lawfully present” to include DACA recipients, who were given special status after their parents brought them to the United States as children illegally. The rule will go into effect just before the presidential election, as DACA recipients will be able to register for coverage on November 1.
The Senators asked Becerra to provide the legal justification for expanding Obamacare eligibility without congressional authorization and for the Biden administration to estimate the expansion&#8217;s cost. Additionally, the Republicans asked if coverage would only apply to DACA recipients or include their family members.

In September last year, a federal judge in Texas <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-rules-daca-is-illegal-says-biden-admin-cannot-usurp-congressional-power" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled</a> that the DACA program was unconstitutional because the executive branch had to “usurp” congressional authority to enact the policy.
“While sympathetic to the predicament of DACA recipients and their families, this court has expressed concerns about the legality of the program for some time. The solution for these deficiencies lies with the legislature, not the executive or judicial branches. Congress, for any number of reasons, decided not to pass DACA-like legislation,” Judge Andrew Hanen wrote. 
The case is currently being reviewed at the appeals court level and could eventually reach the Supreme Court.

President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice announced on Saturday the launch of the National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center — to the surprise of some congressional Republicans.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a Saturday <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-launches-national-extreme-risk-protection-order-resource-center" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a> that the new national resource center “will provide our partners across the country with valuable resources to keep firearms out of the hands of individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others.” Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs), commonly referred to as “red flag” laws, allow authorities to confiscate firearms from a person whom a court deems to be a risk to himself or others. ERPOs also prevent a person from buying or possessing a gun for the duration of the order.
“The establishment of the Center is the latest example of the Justice Department’s work to use every tool provided by the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to protect communities from gun violence,” Garland said.

The resource center, which was launched with a new <a href="https://erpo.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a>, is described as “a resource for implementers” that will “provide training and technical assistance to law enforcement officials, prosecutors, attorneys, judges, clinicians, victim service and social service providers, community organizations, and behavioral health professionals responsible for implementing laws designed to keep guns out of the hands of people who pose a threat to themselves or others.”
The National ERPO Resource Center website also provides a state-by-state guide for red flag laws across the country, along with specific information on each state’s ERPO law. Currently, 21 states and the District of Columbia have red flag laws on the books.
Republicans in the House and Senate were surprised to learn of the DOJ&#8217;s new gun-control resource center. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) <a href="https://twitter.com/RepThomasMassie/status/1771521716805669016" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reposted</a> the DOJ’s announcement on X and asked, “What the hell is this evil?”

Dana Loesch, a Second Amendment advocate and critic of red flag laws, said the DOJ’s National ERPO Resource Center “is an attack on due process.”

This is an attack on due process and ignores existing law that provides a way to adjudicate someone ineligible,” Loesch <a href="https://twitter.com/DLoesch/status/1771544901030727689" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. “All previous tragedies were preventable without removal of due process.”
President Biden has fought to implement more gun control on a national level, issuing an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-unveils-effort-to-crack-down-on-firearm-industry-enhance-background-checks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">executive order</a> last year expanding background checks for firearm purchases. Many of the illegal immigrants who stormed the southern border on Thursday by breaking down razor wire and fencing before pushing into National Guard troops were reportedly processed and released into the United States after the incident. 
Video captured by New York Post reporter Jennie Taer showed hundreds of illegal immigrant men charging the border in El Paso, Texas, and appearing to assault National Guard troops. According to Taer, many of these men were processed by Border Patrol under <a href="https://www.heritage.org/immigration/commentary/why-the-end-title-42-means-the-end-secure-border">Title 8</a>, a measure that allows illegal immigrants to be released while their asylum claims make it through the courts. 
”This sends the message to people around the world that even if you act like this you can probably get into the country,” Taer said during an interview on Fox News. “And I think they continue to push these boundaries and to see what they can get away with and here they got away with some really, really scary stuff.”

The office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) <a href="https://twitter.com/ChadPergram/status/1757570767376547950" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the House impeachment managers &#8220;will present the articles of impeachment to the Senate following the state work period,&#8221; which means a trial <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/2024_schedule.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">could start</a> next week. Schumer&#8217;s team added that senators &#8220;will be sworn in as jurors in the trial the next day&#8221; and Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray (D-WA) will preside.
A <a href="https://www.senate.gov/about/powers-procedures/impeachment.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two-thirds vote</a> is required for a conviction in the Senate, which would lead to removal from office. But the articles may not make it far with a motion to table, which according to the <a href="https://www.senate.gov/about/glossary.htm#:~:text=motion%20to%20table%20%E2%80%93%20A%20proposal,to%20defeating%20the%20question%20tabled." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate glossary</a> is &#8220;a proposal to set aside any pending question. Used to dispose of a question the Chamber does not want to consider further. Agreement to the motion is equivalent to defeating the question tabled.&#8221;

The Democrat-led <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate</a> pressed ahead on Sunday with a <a href="https://twitter.com/AndrewDesiderio/status/1755287316799561872" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$95 billion</a> foreign aid package that dropped a controversial border security and immigration reform deal that was originally included in it.
Senators <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1182/vote_118_2_00043.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted 40-53</a> to defeat a motion from Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), which he said was meant to facilitate consideration of amendments, after which lawmakers <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/senate-advances-foreign-aid-package-sans-border-deal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">again</a> broke the 60-vote filibuster threshold in a <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1182/vote_118_2_00044.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">67-27 cloture vote</a>, setting the stage for what could be a final vote this week.
The legislation aims to provide funds to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and other foreign priorities — including humanitarian aid — and excludes border security provisions put together by a bipartisan group of negotiators that resulted in a hybrid bill that was <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1182/vote_118_2_00039.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ultimately rejected</a> by a group of Republicans and leftist senators last week.
Although there <a href="https://twitter.com/CraigCaplan/status/1756754035061776473" target="_blank" rel="noopener">may yet be amendments</a> taken up for consideration, Lee warned that offerings from himself and other GOP senators — such as amendments that seek to tighten asylum laws, require proof of citizenship to vote, and make other changes to beef up border security and immigration laws — may not even get a shot.
Commenting on his motion to table being defeated on Sunday, Lee said, &#8220;What that means is that we’ve now been shut out of the &#8216;fair and open&#8217; amendment process that was promised.&#8221; And after the vote to bust the filibuster, he <a href="https://twitter.com/BasedMikeLee" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added on X</a>, &#8220;This closes debate and virtually assures passage in the Senate. Only the House can stop this now.&#8221;

The White House, which vouched for the bipartisan Senate border deal, has <a href="https://twitter.com/seungminkim/status/1755280629871026297" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voiced support</a> for the foreign aid-only package to move forward. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) opposed the immigration agreement with foreign aid but <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/speaker-johnson-vows-mayorkas-will-be-impeached-despite-setback" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said &#8220;we&#8217;ll see&#8221;</a> about legislation that dropped the border security provisions from the bipartisan compromise. Former President Donald Trump, the GOP frontrunner in the 2024 White House race, urged senators to <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/111908663705756439" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reject foreign aid</a> unless approved as a loan.
While 26 Republicans and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) voted &#8220;nay&#8221; in the cloture vote on Sunday, a bipartisan group prevailed in electing to press ahead with the foreign aid package, including leadership on both sides of the aisle who voiced concern about holding up more funds for U.S. allies engaged in armed conflicts any longer.
