House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said on Wednesday that President Donald Trump is not pleased with how Elon Musk <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/elon-cant-stand-it-anymore-goes-nuclear-on-big-beautiful-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slammed</a> the &#8220;One Big, Beautiful Bill.&#8221;
In a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0epEIXjmOA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press conference</a>, Johnson told reporters that he &#8220;obviously&#8221; spoke to the president about Musk&#8217;s diatribe on Tuesday against the massive package that contains many provisions in line with Trump’s second-term agenda.
&#8220;As you know, he&#8217;s not delighted that Elon did a 180 on that,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know what happened in 24 hours. Everybody can draw their own conclusions about that, okay? But I look forward to talking to my friend about it again.&#8221;

Johnson also said he called Musk on Tuesday night, but did not get an answer.
&#8220;I hope to talk to him today,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;It&#8217;s very friendly. And we can — and we&#8217;ve laughed about our differences on policy before. I&#8217;m not upset about this.&#8221;
Although Trump has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-blasts-rand-paul-opposition-big-beautiful-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chided</a> GOP lawmakers who have taken a stand against the &#8220;One Big, Beautiful Bill,&#8221; he has not publicly commented on Musk roughly 24 hours after the tech billionaire harshly criticized the measure and the House Republicans who voted to pass it.
&#8220;I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,&#8221; Musk <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1929954109689606359?s=46&amp;t=o-U3qwC25WnWaylJ0oeG7Q" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a post on X. &#8220;This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.&#8221;
Musk <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1929955052527202503" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a> in another post, &#8220;It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America (sic) citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.&#8221; He also <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1929984535456035202" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, &#8220;In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people.&#8221;
Johnson said Musk was &#8220;flat wrong.&#8221; He insisted that &#8220;every single American is going to do better&#8221; once the bill is enacted into law and predicted House Republicans will grow their majority &#8220;because we&#8217;re delivering for the American people and fulfilling our campaign promises.&#8221;
Not passing the legislation would be treacherous, the speaker warned, because retaining the 2017 tax cuts is part of it as well as raising the debt limit to steer clear of a default.
&#8220;All the things that are in this bill are so important for the U.S. economy. It&#8217;s going to be jet fuel for the U.S. economy. All boats are going to rise,&#8221; Johnson said.
The speaker pushed the idea that the bill will implement a historic $1.6 trillion in savings. Johnson also said he told Musk that Republicans have a &#8220;very specific plan&#8221; to end &#8220;wasteful spending, fraud, and abuse&#8221; beyond the one measure.
On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shrugged off the critique when a reporter <a href="https://x.com/Acyn/status/1929956609486401844" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asked</a> how &#8220;mad&#8221; Trump would be when he finds out what Musk said about the bill.
&#8220;Look, the president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn&#8217;t change the president&#8217;s opinion. This is &#8216;One Big, Beautiful Bill&#8217; and he&#8217;s sticking to it,&#8221; Leavitt said.
Some Republicans who oppose the legislation in its current form have touted Musk&#8217;s commentary.
&#8220;I agree with Elon. We have both seen the massive waste in government spending and we know another $5 trillion in debt is a huge mistake. We can and must do better,&#8221; Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) <a href="https://x.com/RandPaul/status/1929958105221132580" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a post on X.
On the Democrat side, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) <a href="https://x.com/RepJeffries/status/1929965141174481053" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, &#8220;The GOP Tax Scam is a disgusting abomination. Truer words have never been spoken.&#8221;
In the days leading up to his explosive comments on X, Musk had already begun to express his dismay with the &#8220;One Big, Beautiful Bill,&#8221; which is now being considered by the Republican-controlled Senate.
&#8220;I was like — disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decrease it. And it undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,&#8221; Musk told &#8220;CBS Sunday Morning&#8221; in an <a href="https://x.com/CBSSunday/status/1927535075144421527" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> clip published in the middle of last week.
Musk also said that when the bill came along, he thought &#8220;everything&#8221; accomplished by DOGE would get &#8220;wiped out&#8221; in the first year. He also said, &#8220;I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both. My personal opinion.&#8221;
Despite the attack on the bill, Musk appeared with Trump in the Oval Office on Friday, getting a warm send-off after completing his stint as a special government employee, overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) effort.
&#8220;Elon&#8217;s really not leaving,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://x.com/DailyMail/status/1928568349606215888" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &#8220;He&#8217;s going to be back and forth, I think.&#8221;
On Wednesday afternoon, after the initial publication of this story, Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114626394056454893" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shared</a> on Truth Social a screenshot of an X post in which Musk expressed gratitude to the president and optimism for the future of DOGE.
&#8220;As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President [Trump] for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,&#8221; Musk <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1927877957852266518" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in the May 28 post. &#8220;The [DOGE] mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.&#8221;

President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration submitted its first rescissions package of the year to Congress, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) announced on Tuesday, accompanied by a list of instances of &#8220;waste, fraud, and abuse&#8221; singled out for the chopping block.
In a thread <a href="https://x.com/WHOMB/status/1929991228449312979" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> on X, OMB said lawmakers in the House and Senate &#8220;must act&#8221; on the request to claw back billions of dollars in &#8220;wasteful foreign aid and federal funding for NPR and PBS&#8221; previously appropriated by Congress, with &#8220;45 days to codify these massive cuts to woke, wasteful, and weaponized spending via a simple majority vote&#8221; using the Impoundment Control Act.
OMB specifically highlighted $67,000 for testing insect powder nutrition on children in Madagascar, $33,000 for “Being LGBTI in the Caribbean,&#8221; $643,000 for &#8220;LGBTQI+&#8221; programs in the Western Balkans, and $567,000 for &#8220;LBGTQI+&#8221; programs in Uganda.

In addition, OMB noted millions under the PEPFAR account for so-called LGBTQIA+ programs, condoms, and vasectomies: $833,000 for &#8220;transgender people, sex workers and their clients and sexual networks&#8221; in Nepal, $5.1 million for &#8220;resilience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans gender, intersex, and queer global movements,&#8221; $3 million for circumcision, vasectomies, and condoms in Zambia, $1 billion in contributions to &#8220;wasteful, corrupt, and anti-American international organizations,&#8221; including $135 million to the World Health Organization, and $1.1 billion for the &#8220;left-wing&#8221; Corporation for Public Broadcasting, &#8220;which uses your taxpayer dollars to fund PBS and NPR.&#8221;
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) confirmed receipt of the rescissions package, which his office said focuses on $9.4 billion in &#8220;wasteful spending&#8221; identified by the Trump administration&#8217;s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative. He also gave a shoutout to Elon Musk, who earlier had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/elon-cant-stand-it-anymore-goes-nuclear-on-big-beautiful-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">assailed</a> the lawmakers who voted to pass the &#8220;One Big, Beautiful Bill&#8221; last month, citing the &#8220;unsustainable&#8221; debt.
&#8220;The House will act quickly on this request,&#8221; Johnson said in a statement. &#8220;Under President Trump, every federal taxpayer dollar is actually being used to serve the American people, not to fund a bloated bureaucracy or purely partisan pet projects. We thank Elon Musk and his DOGE team for identifying a wide range of wasteful, duplicative, and outdated programs, and House Republicans are eager to eliminate them.&#8221;
He added: &#8220;This rescissions package reflects many of DOGE’s findings and is one of the many legislative tools Republicans are using to restore fiscal sanity. Congress will continue working closely with the White House to codify these recommendations, and the House will bring the package to the floor as quickly as possible.&#8221;
Johnson also took a shot at Democrats, who have largely opposed anything Trump supports, including DOGE.
“Democrats continue to wail and complain — NOT at the fraud, waste, and abuse — but at the Trump Administration simply for exposing it,&#8221; the speaker declared. &#8220;In fact, Democrats are the only ones in Washington who do not want to stop the egregious misspending of the people’s tax dollars. Democrats continue to defend corruption, while Republicans are delivering real accountability and real savings the American people demanded in November.&#8221;
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) criticized the spending cuts request.

As it stands, the national debt is approaching $37 trillion.
&#8220;That&#8217;s an indication that we&#8217;ll borrow that much. It&#8217;s an indication that we&#8217;ll put the debt on the back burner,&#8221; said Paul, who added that he did not join &#8220;most of the Republicans&#8221; who voted to &#8220;continue the Biden spending levels&#8221; with the six-month continuing resolution Congress passed in March.
Paul said he believes there are three or four Republicans in the Senate who might oppose the bill as it stands. That amount could be enough to stall the legislation&#8217;s progress, given the GOP has only a 53-45 <a href="https://www.senate.gov/history/partydiv.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">majority</a>.
&#8220;If there are four of us who want it to be more fiscally conservative, I think we can really reduce the spending levels and perhaps separate out the debt ceiling as well,&#8221; Paul said.
The senator also noted that he is &#8220;pretty much open to compromise on everything else in the bill,&#8221; specifically expressing support for how it seeks to retain the 2017 tax cuts.

The White House plans to send its first rescissions package of the year to the Congress next week, President Donald Trump&#8217;s budget chief announced on Wednesday, aiming to gut programs that Republicans view as being wasteful and partisan.
Russ Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), said during an interview on Fox Business that the request to claw back funds appropriated by Congress will be delivered to the House on Monday or Tuesday, whenever the lower chamber is back in session.
The package will focus on removing &#8220;waste and garbage&#8221; for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and foreign aid, Vought told host Larry Kudlow.
Vought noted the package will also target NPR and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Johnson said that $4 to $5 trillion over approximately ten years was &#8220;about the right estimate&#8221; for the measure&#8217;s total cost, but he also said that the cuts included in the bill would provide savings to taxpayers as well.
&#8220;At the same time, we have historic savings for the American people — cuts to government to make it more efficient and effective and work better for the people,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;That was a big campaign promise of President Trump and a big promise of ours, and we&#8217;re going to achieve that. So in the calculation here, there&#8217;s more than $1.5 trillion in savings, Margaret, for the people.&#8221;
Johnson referred to the bill as &#8220;arguably the most consequential legislation Congress will pass in many generations.&#8221;
Brennan pushed back, noting that the Kaiser Foundation had evaluated the bill and said that changes to Medicaid could result in 200,000 people in Johnson&#8217;s home state of Louisiana losing their health care coverage. Johnson said that the only thing the bill would cut with regard to Medicaid was waste and abuse.
&#8220;There&#8217;s a moral component to what we&#8217;re doing. When you make young men work, it&#8217;s good for them, it&#8217;s good for their dignity, it&#8217;s good for their self-worth and it&#8217;s good for the community that they live in,&#8221; he explained.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is defending the House-<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-passes-one-big-beautiful-bill-in-massive-win-for-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> version of President Donald Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill” from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rand-paul-warns-big-beautiful-bill-explode-debt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criticism</a> that it would dangerously inflate the national debt from Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY).
Speaking on &#8220;Fox News Sunday&#8221; with anchor Shannon Bream, moments after Paul’s interview on the same program, Johnson diplomatically rebutted the senator’s claims that the bill features “wimpy and anemic” spending cuts and poses a national security threat by “exploding” the national debt.
&#8220;I agree wholeheartedly with what my dear friend, Rand Paul, said. I love his conviction and I share it. The national debt is &#8230; the greatest threat to our national security and deficits are a serious problem,&#8221; the speaker said. &#8220;What I think Rand is missing on this one is the fact that we are quite serious about this. This is the biggest spending cut, Shannon, in more than 30 years, we&#8217;re going to cut over $1.5 trillion in spending, and it&#8217;s a big leap forward.&#8221;
He continued: &#8220;The last time we had a spending cut was three decades ago, and it was only 800 billion, even adjusted for inflation. This is the biggest spending cut, I think, in the history of government on planet earth. Now, is it enough? Of course not. But we have a very delicate balance and we have to start the process. I liken this to an aircraft carrier. You don&#8217;t turn an aircraft carrier on a dime. It takes a mile of open ocean. And so, it took us decades to get into this situation. This is a big step to begin to turn that aircraft carrier.&#8221;
The speaker also took a moment to address &#8220;one important point&#8221; made by Paul.
&#8220;It sounds like his biggest objection is the fact that we are extending the debt ceiling,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;That&#8217;s a critically important thing to do. We have to do it. We&#8217;re not going to get any Democrats to assist on that. So, to get it through the Senate and make sure we don&#8217;t crash the U.S. economy and default on our debts for the first time in history, it has to be part of the reconciliation package. And that&#8217;s why the president, Trump, and all the other Republicans in Congress, House and Senate, understand the necessity of this.&#8221;
He added: &#8220;Real quick, important point here. It does not mean that we&#8217;re going to spend more money. We&#8217;re extending the debt ceiling to show to creditors, the bond markets, the stock market, that the Congress is serious about this. President Trump is dialed in 100%. He is a visionary leader. He does not want to spend more money. And he has the same concern about the national debt that Rand Paul and I do. That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re not going to be spending to that level. We&#8217;re just sending a message to our creditors around the world that we&#8217;re serious about all of this.&#8221;

Paul, who lamented that the U.S. deficit remains about $2.2 trillion, said he would consider backing the legislation if its proposed $4-5 trillion debt ceiling increase is removed.
&#8220;There&#8217;s got to be someone left in Washington who thinks debt is wrong and deficits are wrong and wants to go in the other direction,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The idea that we&#8217;re going to explode deficits and the projections are now looking at over $3 trillion in deficits over the next 10 years. I think it&#8217;s just &#8230; not a serious proposal.&#8221;

The budget reconciliation process they are using will allow the Senate, with its narrow Republican majority, to bypass the three-fifths majority threshold for overcoming a filibuster. In addition, the SALT deduction cap was raised to $40,000, an increase from the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/this-tax-deduction-cap-threatens-to-derail-trumps-one-big-beautiful-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$30,000 limit</a> that had initially been placed into the bill. Lawmakers also settled on the name &#8220;Trump accounts&#8221; for a $1,000 savings <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/21/us/politics/bill-would-give-newborns-1000-in-trump-accounts.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">proposal</a> for newborns.
Democrats levied various complaints against the bill, including claims that it would result in people losing healthcare coverage and benefit the rich. They all voted against the bill, as did Republican Reps. With a slim House majority and near-certain Democrat opposition, Republicans can likely afford only a few defectors to send the bill to the Senate.
One key component that threatens to derail the House bid to pass the legislation is a provision to increase the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap to $30,000 for individuals earning $400,000 or less, up from the current $10,000 limit set to expire at the end of this year. A source told The Daily Wire that Trump urged House Republicans not to let SALT impede the bill&#8217;s progress, noting they could fight about the issue in the future.
However, GOP lawmakers from high-tax blue states signaled they were not ready to back down after the meeting with Trump, as evidenced by a <a href="https://x.com/sahilkapur/status/1924912782459154828" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> from Reps. Mike Lawler (R-NY), Nick LaLota (R-NY), Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ), and Young Kim (R-CA).

It appears negotiations over the past couple of days were productive.

The exact details were not immediately known.
Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-TX) asserted during the meeting late Sunday that he could not say what might be changing, emphasizing that the situation was fluid.
One of the erstwhile holdouts, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), <a href="https://x.com/chiproytx/status/1924296387040080036" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suggested</a> the breakthrough had to do with moving Medicaid work requirements forward and reducing &#8220;green new scam&#8221; subsidies.
However, Roy also said he had lingering objections linked to the same programs, warning the spending &#8220;ultimately increases the likelihood of continuing deficits and non-Obamacare-expansion states like Texas expanding in the future.&#8221;

On Sunday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) insisted the GOP-led House is &#8220;on track&#8221; to pass President Donald Trump’s &#8220;one big, beautiful bill&#8221; on time despite the legislation hitting a roadblock last week.
Johnson expressed confidence in his Memorial Day deadline for the domestic policy bill during an <a href="https://video.foxnews.com/v/6373018257112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> on &#8220;Fox News Sunday&#8221; after the House Budget Committee failed to advance <a href="https://docs.house.gov/meetings/BU/BU00/20250516/118284/BILLS-119pih.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the legislation</a> in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trumps-one-big-beautiful-bill-hits-snag-in-critical-vote" target="_blank" rel="noopener">16-21 vote</a> on Friday amid a revolt by some Republican deficit hawks.
&#8220;We&#8217;re on track, working around the clock to deliver this nation-shaping legislation for the American people as soon as possible,&#8221; Johnson told Fox News anchor Shannon Bream. &#8220;Look, all 11 of our committees have wrapped up their work and they spent less and saved more than even we projected initially. This really is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that we have here.&#8221;
The budget panel is set to reconvene on Sunday evening and &#8220;they&#8217;ll get that through the committee,&#8221; Johnson predicted. &#8220;And the plan is to move it to the Rules Committee by midweek and to the House floor by the end of the week, so we meet our initial, our original Memorial Day deadline,&#8221; he added.
Johnson was asked to respond to some of the GOP defectors on the Budget Committee, including Reps. Ralph Norman (R-SC) and Chip Roy (R-TX), who say they want deeper and more immediate spending cuts. The speaker noted that there have been &#8220;lots of conversations&#8221; with his &#8220;good friends&#8221; and more would take place on Sunday.
&#8220;What they were complaining about or mostly concerned about I think is, for example, work requirements in Medicaid. They wanted them to be implemented earlier rather than later. Well, so do we,&#8221; Johnson said.
&#8220;The concern is — what we&#8217;re trying to work with is the ability of the states to retool their systems and ensure the verification processes, to make sure that all the new laws and all the new safeguards that we&#8217;re placing can actually be enforced,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;And so, we&#8217;re working through all those details, and we&#8217;ll get it done. But I tell you what: this is the largest spending reduction in at least three decades, probably longer. It&#8217;s historic.&#8221;
Johnson also noted that the House has been in &#8220;close coordination&#8221; with the Senate, where some Republicans have voiced reservations about the bill in its current form, since last year. The legislation that is progressing through the reconciliation process is &#8220;one that was very carefully negotiated and delicately balanced, and we hope that they don&#8217;t make many modifications to it because that will ensure its passage quickly,&#8221; he added.
&#8220;Remember, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that we need to do this by July 4th,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;Remember, also included in this package is a solution to the debt limit that is coming upon us, the cliff. We&#8217;ve got to get this done and get it to the president&#8217;s desk by that big celebration on Independence Day. And &#8230; I am convinced that we can.&#8221;
