House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) met with former President Donald Trump for three hours in the immediate aftermath of an attempted assassination on Trump’s life on Sunday, and remarked on Trump’s resilience, saying, “He’s one of a kind.”
Johnson, whose wife, Kelly, joined him for the meeting, made his comments on Fox &amp; Friends on Monday.
“He was in very good spirits, as you might expect,” Johnson told the hosts. “That’s who he is. He’s so resilient, and we were really grateful to see him.”
“There’s no leader in the history of America that has been so attacked and remained strong and so resilient,” Johnson declared. “He’s one of a kind. He is not going to stop fighting for the American people.”
“Kelly and I  spoke with him at great length about that because it is something that no one can deny; God has spared his life twice now,” Johnson asserted. “I told him that it reminded me of the bulletproof George Washington, our first president, who evaded being shot when he was an army colonel, the famous incident in the French and American Indian War where they all took shots at him and bullet holes went through his jacket and it didn’t take him down. That event took place ironically less than 50 miles from where Trump was shot on the stage in Butler, Pennsylvania. These things aren’t accidents; it’s not luck; I believe it’s Providence and we talked about that.”
Johnson then spoke about the briefing he received from the Acting Director of the Secret Service while Johnson was meeting with Trump.

“What I understand happened is that those agents that were with him yesterday saw that barrel of that gun between the bushes on a golf course,” Johnson stated. “That’s a difficult thing to spot, but thankfully they did. But unlike in Butler, they did not pause; they immediately pulled their weapons and fired. I think that’s why this guy, the suspect, the shooter, threw the gun in the bushes and ran. Had they not been there, had they not acted so quickly and so decisively, we might be having a different conversation today.”
“President Trump needs the most coverage of anyone,” Johnson insisted. “He’s the most attacked; he’s the most threatened, even probably more than when he was in the Oval Office. So we are demanding in the House that he have every asset available and we will make more available if necessary. I don’t think it’s a funding issue; I think it’s a manpower allocation issue.”
Co-host Brian Kilmeade decried the necessity to have a college degree in order to serve in the Secret Service, noting that some Navy Seals as young as 31 could be available to serve.
Johnson noted that he put together a task force after the attempted assassination in Butler, Pennsylvania, that will put forth recommendations, saying, “Congress will act swiftly. We need accountability; we must demand that this job is being done. &#8230; It’s the leadership. We have no faith; I have no faith, have no faith in Secretary Mayorkas, Department of Homeland Security. He’s an abject failure; we impeached him in the House, as you know, but Chuck Schumer made it die in the Senate.”

Trump&#8217;s campaign announced Sunday afternoon that Trump was &#8220;safe following gunshots in his vicinity.&#8221; The FBI later said it was responding to West Palm Beach to investigate &#8220;what appears to be an attempted assassination&#8221; of Trump.
Secret Service personnel <a href="https://www.secretservice.gov/newsroom/releases/2024/09/secret-service-statement-regarding-september-15-2024-security-incident" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opened fire</a> on a man who poked a rifle muzzle through a fence around Trump&#8217;s West Palm Beach golf club where he was hitting the links, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/09/15/trump-golf-course-shooting-west-palm-beach-florida/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">officials said</a>, after which the suspect fled and was later detained by police.
CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-harris-election-09-15-24#h_40a4f240c6b95848a836918e03240a69" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the former president left the Trump International Golf Club with his motorcade after the Secret Service warded off the suspect and he returned to his Mar-a-Lago estate, which is located in Palm Beach, Florida.
In a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/i-will-never-surrender-trump-defiant-after-shooter-targets-him-in-palm-beach?topStoryPosition=4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">defiant statement</a> addressed to his supporters on Sunday, Trump declared, &#8220;Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me. Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again.”
Trump previously went through a harrowing attack in mid-July, when a shooter opened fire on him while he was speaking to a crowd during an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, as he seeks another term in the White House.
The former president survived, though he was hit in his right ear <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-now-claims-there-was-never-any-doubt-trump-was-hit-by-a-bullet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">by a bullet</a>. He <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-stops-secret-service-from-carrying-him-off-raises-fist-and-tells-supporters-fight-fight-fight" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raised</a> his fist into the air in a show of strength. One rallygoer, 50-year-old fireman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dana-white-kid-rock-donate-to-fundraiser-for-shooting-victims-surpasses-2-million-in-under-24-hours" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Corey Comperatore</a>, was killed. Two other attendees were wounded.
Secret Service snipers took out the gunman, identified as a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man named Thomas Matthew Crooks, who unleashed the attack with a rifle from the roof of a building about 150 yards away from the stage.
Multiple <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-votes-to-establish-task-force-on-trump-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">investigations</a> ensued, including <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-reveals-members-of-task-force-to-investigate-trump-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one led</a> by a bipartisan task force in the House, and Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/secret-service-director-resigns-amid-uproar-over-trump-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resigned</a> amid blowback for the security failures underlying the shooting in Pennsylvania.
Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said they had confidence in the House task force&#8217;s members to &#8220;move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and help make certain such failures never happen again.&#8221;

Several Republicans in the House have signaled dismay with the GOP plan, with some being turned off by the idea of stop-gap spending bill, defense hawks fretting a &#8220;negative impact&#8221; on the Pentagon, and others not liking the idea of the SAVE Act being included, <a href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2024/09/09/congress/bad-signs-for-johnsons-spending-plan-00178101" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to POLITICO</a>. A shorter continuing resolution without the SAVE Act might have better odds. While the six-month continuing resolution plus the SAVE Act is expected to get a final vote in the House <a href="https://x.com/CraigCaplan/status/1833564980018614361" target="_blank" rel="noopener">as soon as</a> Wednesday, it appears unlikely the proposal will prevail. Leading <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/schumer-rejects-gop-proposal-to-link-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship-with-spending-measure" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Democrats</a> and even <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/4862402-speaker-johnson-cr-government-shutdown/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">some Republicans</a> in Congress have voiced opposition to the idea. Even if the plan somehow makes it past the House and the Democrat-controlled Senate, the White House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-to-ax-gop-proposal-tying-spending-to-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on Monday that President Joe Biden would veto the measure.
Congress is running out of time to reach a deal on a short-term spending measure if lawmakers returning to Washington, D.C., from their summer recess are unable to pass appropriations legislation to fund the various federal agencies for the coming fiscal year. A government shutdown could happen by the beginning of October — just weeks before a presidential election — without an agreement.

In a <a href="https://x.com/JakeSherman/status/1832890403647086850" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to colleagues, Schumer previewed what the Senate will be working on over the next few weeks now that lawmakers are returning to Washington, D.C., following the summer recess, and warned that a government shutdown could happen this fall without Congress reaching a deal for an extension to fund the various federal agencies by the end of September.
&#8220;We all know what is at stake: crucial funding for health care, infrastructure, education, food safety, veterans, border security, U.S. competitiveness and more,&#8221; Schumer said, adding that Democrats &#8220;support&#8221; a continuing resolution to keep the government open as long as it does not include any partisan add-ons.
&#8220;As I have said before, the only way to get things done is in a bipartisan way,&#8221; Schumer said. &#8220;Despite Republican bluster, that is how we’ve handled every funding bill in the past, and this time should be no exception. We will not let poison pills or Republican extremism put funding for critical programs at risk.&#8221;

While at least <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/4862402-speaker-johnson-cr-government-shutdown/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a couple</a> House Republicans indicated they oppose the latest GOP gambit, Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Johnson</a> (R-LA) — who <a href="https://mikejohnson.house.gov/uploadedfiles/save_act_white_paper.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a document earlier this year that warned of a National Voter Registration Act “loophole” and cited evidence of noncitizens on voter rolls in various states — said the combination of the continuing resolution and the SAVE Act &#8220;has a lot of merit,&#8221; <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/4862402-speaker-johnson-cr-government-shutdown/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a source told The Hill</a>.
Schumer <a href="https://www.appropriations.senate.gov/news/majority/schumer-and-murray-joint-statement-on-house-republican-funding-proposal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a joint statement with Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-WA) in response to the proposal, declaring, &#8220;As we have said repeatedly, avoiding a government shutdown requires bipartisanship, not a bill drawn up by one party. &#8230; If Speaker Johnson drives House Republicans down this highly partisan path, the odds of a shutdown go way up.&#8221;
The lower chamber already <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-all-house-dems-vote-against-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> the SAVE Act as a standalone bill in July with some bipartisan support. However, the Democrat-controlled Senate has refused to take it up for consideration and the Biden administration signaled its opposition to the election integrity bill. Some critics have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-formally-opposes-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argued that</a> the legislation is unnecessary and would create an undue burden on legitimate voters.
Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rick-scott-joins-race-for-senate-gop-leader" target="_blank" rel="noopener">running</a> to become leader of the Senate GOP, <a href="https://x.com/SenRickScott/status/1832894641378611504" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a> to Schumer&#8217;s letter on Sunday by saying the top Democrat &#8220;thinks that preventing illegal immigrants from voting is &#8216;Republican extremism.&#8217; That means that every Democrat supports allowing illegal immigrants to vote. This is insane, a threat to democracy and must be fixed by passing the SAVE Act.&#8221;

And they said they wanted the SAVE Act attached to it.

A Labor Day scoop indicated that Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Johnson</a> (R-LA) may add election integrity legislation to a short-term spending bill when the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House</a> returns to session next week — a move that would likely set up a standoff with Democrats.
Punchbowl News <a href="https://punchbowl.news/archive/9224-am/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=9/2/24%20%20AM:&amp;utm_term=Punchbowl%20AM%20and%20Active%20Subscribers%20from%20Memberful%20Combined" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Johnson — who <a href="https://mikejohnson.house.gov/uploadedfiles/save_act_white_paper.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a document earlier this year that warned of a National Voter Registration Act “loophole” and cited evidence of noncitizens on voter rolls in various states — and other Republicans are talking about the prospect of combining an extension to government funding through March 2025 with the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/8281" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(SAVE) Act</a>.
The SAVE Act aims to require individuals show proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in elections for federal office and pushes states to remove non-citizens from voter rolls. It already <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-all-house-dems-vote-against-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> the GOP-led House in July with the help of a handful of Democrats. However, the Democrat-controlled Senate has not taken up the bill since then and the Biden administration formally <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-formally-opposes-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">declared its opposition</a> to it.

Former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a>, who is running for another term in the White House, has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/our-whole-voting-system-is-under-siege-trump-urges-republicans-to-pass-bill-requiring-voters-to-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">urged</a> Republicans to pass the SAVE Act. And the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House</a> <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/freedom-caucus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Freedom Caucus</a>, a group of conservative that includes Roy, released a statement in August <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/freedom-caucus-unveils-plan-to-protect-trump-from-lame-duck-omnibus-shore-up-election-integrity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">calling for</a> the SAVE Act to be added to any short-term spending measure that may emerge if lawmakers are unable to pass individual appropriations bills.
Congress has until the <a href="https://spectrumnews1.com/oh/columbus/news/2024/07/29/budget-appropriations-recess-congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">end of September</a> to pass legislation to fund the various arms of the federal government or face the prospect of a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/government-shutdown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shutdown</a>. Democrats may support <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-passes-another-short-term-spending-bill-rejecting-conservative-bid-for-border-attachment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passing another</a> continuing resolution, but the majority of them would likely not abide by the SAVE Act being attached to it. Some have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-formally-opposes-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argued</a> the legislation is unnecessary and would create an undue burden on legitimate voters.
Still, the GOP seems prepared for a discussion. In response to the Punchbowl News report, Sen. Gold Star parents Darin Hoover and Kelly Barnett, the parents of SSGT Taylor Hoover, one of the 13 servicemembers killed at Abbey Gate in Kabul, contacted Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) and informed him that the cemetery had given the families a specific time to honor their children, but it did not work for all of them, and in addition told the families that Trump could not accompany them, The Daily Caller <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2024/08/28/exclusive-gold-star-families-had-trouble-getting-trump-into-arlington-until-house-speaker-intervened/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.

McCaul then contacted Johnson. McCaul recalled, “When Darin and Kelly contacted me, I was furious to hear their request to have President Trump join them to commemorate the anniversary of Taylor’s death was being stymied, along with several of the other family members of U.S. servicemembers killed at Abbey Gate. I immediately asked what I could do to help and reached out to Speaker Johnson to see what he could do. Thankfully, Speaker Johnson and his team acted quickly and were able to get the situation resolved. But something like this should never have happened. Gold Star families have already suffered enough.”
“The Speaker of the House had to get involved. Reps [Darrell] Issa (R-CA), [Brian] Mast (R-FL), and Chairman Mike McCaul were instrumental in assisting in the Gold Star families,” another source told the Caller. “After the Speaker’s call, the situation shifted significantly. It was only three days before the ceremonies, and Arlington National Cemetery waited until the last minute to confirm key components of the event with the families.”
“Arlington Cemetery officials claimed the families didn’t want any media, photography, or videography at Section 60, contradicting what the families had actually requested. The families were fine with the media, designated by the Trump team, but Arlington kept pushing back, obstructing the process,” the source added. “This would have not happened without Speaker Johnson.”

The &#8220;real campaign&#8221; starts next month — after Labor Day — when the &#8220;sugar high&#8221; that Democrats are feeling right now comes to an end, House Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Johnson</a> (R-LA) said on Tuesday.
During a <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6360705501112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News interview</a>, Johnson dismissed the high level of excitement Democrats are trying to exude during their national convention while rallying around Vice President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamala Harris</a> after many of them pressured President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> into dropping out of the White House race.
&#8220;Everything that we&#8217;re seeing at the convention — everything they&#8217;re saying, is patently untrue,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;They&#8217;re trying to convince the American people that what we&#8217;re seeing, and experiencing, and feeling isn&#8217;t real.&#8221;

Johnson argued that when Democrats brag about a hot economy, they ignore a reality that is not quite so rosy as Americans grapple with the increased prices of goods and services.
&#8220;That&#8217;s why they&#8217;re out there, you know, touting the economy when they broke the economy, clearly,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;Inflation is at record highs and everyone&#8217;s struggling and they&#8217;re looking right into the camera and trying to pretend like everything&#8217;s great.&#8221;
Johnson also talked about national security and illegal immigration.
&#8220;They&#8217;ve put us in jeopardy on the world stage,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They&#8217;ve appeased our adversaries and that&#8217;s why we have hot wars around the globe right now. They&#8217;ve opened the border wide and that is a catastrophe in every city in every state around the country.&#8221;
Bringing his response to the Democratic National Convention full circle, Johnson said, &#8220;They want people to believe that what we see is not actually true, and that&#8217;s not going to work. I think they&#8217;re on a sugar high right now.&#8221;
Johnson predicted the Democrats will &#8220;come off it after the convention, and the real campaign starts after Labor Day, as it does every presidential cycle.&#8221;

He added, &#8220;I&#8217;m absolutely convinced, y&#8217;all, we&#8217;re going to grow the House majority, win back the Senate for the Republican Party, and Donald Trump is going to be returned to the White House because of all of this.&#8221;
Before the interview ended, Fox News host Dana Perino noted that she heard about House Republicans being warned their races in November might be closer than previously expected.
Pressed on what he encourages House Republicans to do, Johnson replied that they should &#8220;keep fighting, to run like we&#8217;re 10 points behind.&#8221; He added, &#8220;But we&#8217;re ahead in the polls, we are going to grow the majority, and we are very bullish about November.&#8221;

The plan is predicated on the stated expectation that Republicans hold the House and win control of the Senate and the White House in the November election, a result that would give the GOP a strong hand come January.
&#8220;What we’re planning right now is we’re designing a very aggressive playbook for the legislative agenda in the new Congress,&#8221; Johnson <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4815216-speaker-johnson-interview-harris-walz-trump/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The Hill</a> this week.
Johnson called himself an &#8220;optimist&#8221; and said he believes Republicans are &#8220;going to win the White House, the Senate and the House, so I think there’ll be a lot of energy and excitement behind that.&#8221;
Democrats currently lead the Senate, but only because a handful of independents caucus with them. The presidential election is poised to pit former President Donald Trump against Vice President Kamala Harris now that President Joe Biden has dropped out. Polls, so far, <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/president/general/2024/trump-vs-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signal a close race</a>.
And in the present Congress, Republicans control the House, though with a slim margin that has allowed a small group of defectors breaking ranks to threaten or even <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gop-defectors-blow-up-house-vote-amid-spending-protest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blow up</a> close votes.

Johnson indicated that he feels bullish about the GOP&#8217;s chances in the lower chamber, though the speaker tempered expectations by stating that he does not think a 35- or 40-seat majority is in the cards.
&#8220;It’s not possible anymore, because the number of swing districts has been reduced dramatically due to gerrymandering and redistricting,&#8221; he said in reference to the &#8220;red wave&#8221; idea.
Johnson said he believes Republicans can have &#8220;an exponential increase in our majority.&#8221; Such an edge over the Democrats would be &#8220;very helpful,&#8221; he added.
&#8220;So if we have [a] unified government, what we’re also planning in the midst of all this is a very aggressive first 100 days agenda for the Congress,&#8221; Johnson said.
The speaker said he told colleagues and Trump that Republicans can &#8220;have the most consequential presidency and Congress of the modern era if we win all this, because we have to fix everything.&#8221;
He added, &#8220;The Biden-Harris administration has made a mess of every area of public policy.&#8221;

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House</a> unveiled on Monday the members of the bipartisan task force to investigate the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-says-trump-agreed-to-interview-on-rally-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attempted assassination</a> of former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, earlier this month.
Seven Republicans and six Democrats <a href="https://x.com/nicholaswu12/status/1817973672155693501" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will serve</a> on the panel, which the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-votes-to-establish-task-force-on-trump-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House approved in a 416-0</a> vote last week. Many of the lawmakers chosen to be members have military, law enforcement, or prosecutorial experience.
Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), the lawmaker who represents the district where the rally shooting happened and introduced the resolution to create the task force, has been selected as chairman. Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) will serve as ranking member.
The other GOP members will include Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) and Reps. David Joyce (R-OH), Laurel Lee (R-FL), Michael Waltz (R-FL), Clay Higgins (R-LA), and Pat Fallon (TX). And the Democrats will be rounded out by Reps. Madeleine Dean (D-PA), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), Glenn Ivey (D-MD), and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL).

Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bennie-thompson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bennie Thompson</a> (D-MS), who served as chairman of the now-defunct January 6 Committee, was not selected to participate. The conservative House Freedom Caucus <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/conservatives-demand-jan-6-committee-chair-be-kept-off-trump-rally-shooting-task-force" target="_blank" rel="noopener">specifically demanded</a> Thompson not become a member after he introduced a bill that could strip Trump of Secret Service protection under certain conditions. Thompson <a href="https://x.com/emilybrooksnews/status/1816135746346164291" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly said</a> he had no interest in being on the task force.
According to Johnson&#8217;s office, the task force will take over all pending House inquiries into the rally shooting and has subpoena authority. The panel&#8217;s goals are to &#8220;understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination,&#8221; &#8220;ensure accountability,&#8221; and to &#8220;prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again.&#8221;
The task force will &#8220;make recommendations for reform to the relevant government agencies and recommend any necessary legislation to implement the reforms,&#8221; Johnson&#8217;s office added.
House lawmakers have already begun to look into the attempted assassination of Trump, which resulted in the former president getting <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-confirms-trump-was-struck-by-a-bullet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wounded by a bullet in his right ear</a>. One rallygoer was killed, and two others were injured. A Secret Service sniper shot and killed the gunman, identified as a 20-year-old man named Thomas Matthew Crooks.
One day after she testified before the House last week, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/secret-service-director-resigns-amid-uproar-over-trump-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resigned</a> as she faced backlash over the security failure underlying the attack. &#8220;Biden’s proposal to radically overhaul the U.S. Supreme Court would tilt the balance of power and erode not only the rule of law, but the American people’s faith in our system of justice,&#8221; Johnson said in a <a href="https://x.com/SpeakerJohnson/status/1817938406049296725">post</a> on X. &#8220;This proposal is the logical conclusion to the Biden-Harris Administration and Congressional Democrats’ ongoing efforts to delegitimize the Supreme Court.&#8221;
Johnson also warned that Democrats&#8217; calls to &#8220;expand and pack&#8221; the Supreme Court &#8220;will soon resume.&#8221;
Biden, 81, who recently dropped out of the 2024 race, unveiled his proposal for reforming the high court with an <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/07/29/joe-biden-reform-supreme-court-presidential-immunity-plan-announcement/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">op-ed</a> in The Washington Post that cited gripes with some of its rulings in recent years, including on abortion and presidential immunity, as well as transparency issues related to the justices themselves.
&#8220;What is happening now is not normal, and it undermines the public’s confidence in the court’s decisions, including those impacting personal freedoms. We now stand in a breach,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;That’s why — in the face of increasing threats to America’s democratic institutions — I am calling for three bold reforms to restore trust and accountability to the court and our democracy.&#8221;
Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Biden has endorsed as his successor, <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/presidential/3102465/kamala-harris-supports-biden-supreme-court-reforms/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">supports the plan</a> and called on lawmakers to pass the reforms. So does the <a href="https://x.com/SenatorDurbin/status/1817944952195727523" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Democrat chairman</a> of the Senate Judiciary Committee. However, Johnson signaled that the proposed changes would not even get a vote in the lower chamber under his leadership.
&#8220;It is telling that Democrats want to change the system that has guided our nation since its founding simply because they disagree with some of the Court’s recent decisions,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;This dangerous gambit of the Biden-Harris Administration is dead on arrival in the House.&#8221;
Although Biden&#8217;s proposal faces long odds in making it through Congress at the moment, that may change if Republicans get blown out in the 2024 election. Still, even the Democrat-led Senate <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/senate-gop-blocks-democrats-supreme-court-ethics-bill-rcna156738" target="_blank" rel="noopener">failed</a> to overcome GOP opposition to pass a Supreme Court ethics bill earlier this year.

Speaker Johnson Rips Biden's Proposal To Reform Supreme Court: 'Dead On Arrival'

House Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Johnson</a> (R-LA) visited the U.S. southern border on Thursday, calling out President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> and Vice President Kamala Harris over their handling of illegal immigration.
In a visit to the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego alongside Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), Johnson specifically went after the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and called for Congress to pass new legislation to safeguard elections from non-citizen voting. San Diego has been a hot spot for unlawful crossings in recent months, with tens of thousands of migrants crossing into California. 
&#8220;This has become in many ways the epicenter of the Biden-Harris border catastrophe, and now we’re very concerned in Congress that this illegal immigrant invasion is threatening even the integrity of our elections,” Johnson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGndM5nx3Uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. 
He added that the “catastrophe” at the border had been “engineered” by the Biden-Harris administration. He said, “Border czar and San Francisco radical Kamala Harris bears the responsibility for this disaster.”
“And now we’ve all seen on our television screens, there’s yet another caravan of immigrants heading to the border to get in here. And of course they want to come in before the election because they believe there may be a good chance that President Trump wins that election. I certainly believe that and this won’t be tolerated any longer,” Johnson said.
The House speaker also discussed the SAVE Act, legislation that would require individuals to show proof of citizenship to register to vote in elections for federal office. 
“Kamala Harris and 198 House Democrats want to allow illegal aliens to decide American elections, and right now every non-citizen can do that, and there’s no real impediment except the honor system,” he said. “We don’t believe that is going to work.”
While the GOP-controlled House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-all-house-dems-vote-against-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> the SAVE Act earlier this month, the Democrat-controlled Senate has not taken it up. The White House also voiced opposition to the legislation. 
Johnson was joined by National Border Patrol Council Executive Vice President John Anfinsen, who said that the situation at the border was not improving.

“Instead of crossing illegally between the ports, asylum seekers, many of whom are only seeking to abuse the system, are now primarily showing up at ports of entry and airports,” he said.
Anfinsen said that U.S. customs officers had encountered more people trying to claim asylum in June than Border Patrol had. 
Harris has come under intense scrutiny for her record as vice president after Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race. Much of the criticism has focused on her handling of the border crisis after Biden gave her that responsibility.
