The Trump administration <a href="https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/press-releases/cms-ends-federal-medicaid-chip-funding-sex-rejecting-procedures-children-youth" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> Tuesday that a final rule barring federal Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) funds from being used to pay for transgender medical interventions for minors, including puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries.
“Today, we are ending federal taxpayer funding for sex-rejecting procedures on children,” Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said. “These interventions carry serious risks and can cause irreversible harm. The federal government will no longer use Medicaid and CHIP dollars to fund procedures that fail to meet the evidentiary standard our children deserve.”
President Donald Trump celebrated the decision Tuesday, saying his administration would no longer force taxpayers to finance “barbaric surgeries and practices” on children. 
“Just think about all of the young, innocent, and perhaps confused children who will be spared!” Trump wrote on <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/117078967972327386">Truth Social</a>.
Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said the policy is intended to protect children from experimental and potentially irreversible medical interventions. 
“Children deserve our protection, not experimental interventions that pose serious risks and convey no proven benefits,” Oz said. “By cutting off federal funds for these sex-rejecting procedures, we’re following the science, saving taxpayer dollars, and, most importantly, protecting children from potentially irreversible harm so they can truly flourish.”
CMS said its decision followed a review of national and international research conducted by HHS that identified what the agency described as significant evidence gaps and safety concerns.
CMS said the procedures can carry potentially permanent consequences, including infertility, impaired sexual function, diminished bone density, altered brain development, and other lasting physiological effects.
The agency also pointed to the United Kingdom’s Cass Review, a comprehensive examination of medical treatment for transgender-identifying children, as evidence of international scrutiny surrounding the treatments.  
The new rule includes a taper-off period for minors already receiving hormone therapy. Federal Medicaid and CHIP funding will remain available for up to six months after the rule takes effect to allow patients to safely get off hormone treatment.
The rule does not affect Medicaid or CHIP coverage for mental health services, which CMS said will continue to be covered under existing federal requirements.
Trump tied the policy to the upcoming midterm elections.
“Please remember this when you are casting your vote in the Midterm Elections in November,” he wrote.
CMS said Tuesday’s action is specifically focused on the use of federal taxpayer dollars. 
“The Trump Administration is drawing a clear line: America’s children will not be subjected to life-altering interventions on the taxpayer’s dime without reliable evidence of safety and clinical benefit,” HHS Press Secretary Emily Hilliard said.
The rule is set to take effect October 13, putting the federal funding restrictions in place less than a month before the November midterm elections.

Medical examiner Kimberley Springer on Thursday, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/D6skXbDJJj8?is=rXN0RqOz_N9i8oBN">August 6</a>, walked a jury through an autopsy photograph of 8-month-old Callan Clancy, explaining his visible injuries. “&#8230;You can also begin to see petechial hemorrhages, which are dot-like hemorrhages underneath the skin, on the face,” she testified, aiming a laser pointer towards the screen. 
Callan’s mother, Lindsay Clancy, could be heard sobbing, her folded hands and dark hair veiling her face from prying cameras. Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, leaned toward her and whispered. A court officer moved toward her in the background. 
“In terms of the marks around Callan’s neck, and the petechiae around his eyes and face, did that give you an indication here of the mechanism of death for Callan?” asked the prosecutor. 
“Yes,” Springer continued, “it is consistent with a ligature strangulation.” 
Moments later, the court broke for recess. As she was wheeled from the courtroom, Lindsay’s body slumped forward in her wheelchair. She appeared unable to hold herself upright.
A mother in any other circumstance would never be forced to sit, stone-faced, through such gruesome testimony about her own child. In this case, however, it was Clancy herself who murdered Callan, along with her two other children, five-year-old Cora and three-year-old Dawson. 
The facts of the case are undisputed by the defense. On January 24, 2023, Clancy sent her husband, Patrick, to pick up takeout and medication for their daughter, Cora, leaving her alone with their three children at their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts. In Patrick’s absence, Clancy lured the children to the basement and, using rubber exercise bands, strangled them one by one.
Then, she climbed the stairs to the master bedroom. She locked the door, slit her wrists and neck with a kitchen knife, and threw herself from the second-story window. 
When Patrick returned home a short time later, the house was quiet — an oddity for a family with three young children. &#8220;Guys?&#8221; he called, expecting an enthusiastic answer. He first checked for his family in the children&#8217;s bedrooms, and then the upstairs bathroom for signs of bath time. When he reached the locked door of the master bedroom, he knew something was wrong.
Behind it, he found the room in disarray. Blood speckled nearly every surface, as though it had been sprayed &#8220;with a hose.&#8221; The bed had been pushed diagonally into the middle of the room. The far window was open, the screen pushed up, the pitch-black 40-degree night blowing in against the silver curtains. 
Lindsay left bloodstains on the shingled siding before landing on the frozen ground beneath the window, her head toward the house. The fall shattered her thoracic spine and multiple ribs and caused a Jefferson fracture in her neck, leaving her paralyzed. By the time she was found, her internal temperature had reached 82 degrees Fahrenheit, indicating severe hypothermia. 
The 911 call capturing Patrick&#8217;s discovery of his wife and children was deemed too graphic to release publicly. Lindsay heard the call in court, as did the unusually large panel of 18 jurors.

The questions before them are more complicated than whether Clancy killed her children. Instead, the case asks the jury to grapple with some of the most difficult issues in criminal law and medical ethics: Did she possess the mens rea (or guilty mind) required for first-degree murder? Did postpartum psychosis absolve her of legal responsibility for her actions?
And another question the verdict cannot answer: did the medical system fail her long before she killed her children? 
The warning signs
By all accounts, Lindsay Clancy was a “wonderful mom.” 
The sentiment was repeated ad nauseam by countless of the prosecution&#8217;s own witnesses over the first nine days of testimony, including her ex-husband, father-in-law, nanny Elaine Rossi, co-workers, pediatrician, and close friends. 
Lindsay “loved our children,” Patrick <a href="https://static.foxnews.com/foxnews.com/content/uploads/2026/07/Clancy-Civil-Lawsuit.pdf">said</a>, and “never took her frustration out on the kids.” She was dedicated to being a mom, he recalled, and “worked twice as hard as most,” rarely taking a break to rest. 
However, after the birth of her third child, she experienced what defense experts assert was a bout of postpartum mania, waking every day at 4 a.m. to run three miles, ride her Peloton for 30 minutes and do another 30 minutes of aerobics. Just five weeks after giving birth, she ran a five-mile race.
The mania was followed by sudden and severe anxiety and depression. Recognizing that something was very wrong, and trusting in the medical system as a labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, she reached out for help. Psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Tufts prescribed Zoloft, to which Clancy had a serious adverse reaction: she did not sleep for 48 hours, experienced racing thoughts and intense anxiety, and felt “awful.”
As Clancy asserts in her <a href="https://static.foxnews.com/foxnews.com/content/uploads/2026/07/Clancy-Civil-Lawsuit.pdf">civil suit</a> against the many healthcare professionals who treated her in the months following Callan’s birth, this was a “dramatic departure from her previous sleep patterns and was an obvious warning sign of medication-induced activation consistent with bi-polar disorder.” 
The risk is sufficiently well-recognized that Zoloft’s labeling includes a warning about the potential for these symptoms.
Clancy reported the reactions in October 2022 to Dr. Tufts, who simply discontinued the Zoloft and prescribed a cocktail of Ativan and Benadryl. She would consult with Dr. Tufts at least four times in the fall and winter months. 
The cycle continued with different providers. “Frustrated and scared,” Clancy checked herself into the South Shore Hospital emergency room and was later treated through the hospital’s Perinatal Behavioral Health Program. There, she was prescribed trazodone and Prozac, both of which she later reported had worsened her symptoms. South Shore psychiatric nurse practitioner Julie Paul discontinued those medications and started her on Ambien, Remeron, and Klonopin, after which she experienced dissociation. 
She was “unable to determine what was real,” and “unable to be alone.” 
She then contacted a new practitioner in Weymouth, nurse Rebecca Jollatta, who prescribed Seroquel, after which “Lindsay&#8217;s condition took a dramatic turn for the worse,” according to the civil suit. “She developed suicidal ideation and began experiencing what she described as &#8216;intrusive thoughts&#8217;—which were actually auditory hallucinations. The voice said, &#8216;I will not be the same. I want to die.&#8217;”

In December 2022, her suicidal ideation worsened, accompanied by “thoughts of harming the kids,” which she reported to Patrick and to her mother, who drove her to the emergency room. She was admitted to a partial hospitalization program at Women &amp; Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. By then, she had lost 15 pounds in a month.
Over the course of her illness, Clancy repeatedly sought help — at least 40 times — from family and friends, suicide hotlines, emergency departments, inpatient programs and mental health providers. She continued reaching out even as her condition deteriorated, but some support clinicians turned her away because she “did not have a suicide plan.” 
She ultimately self-admitted to additional emergency rooms and inpatient programs, the last of which was at McLean Hospital. She was released after only five days so she could attend her daughter’s birthday party.
All in all, Clancy was prescribed 13 different medications, including benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and sleep aids, in the four months leading up to the deaths of her children. 
The defense’s central claim is encapsulated in Clancy’s civil suit: “The psychotropic medications Lindsay received appear to have paradoxically exacerbated her underlying psychiatric vulnerability, precipitating a state of manic psychosis characterized by compelling command hallucinations.” In other words, Clancy was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis, a condition they contend was worsened by the medications she was prescribed.
The persistence of postpartum psychosis
To outside observers, Clancy’s case appears to fit a rare but tragic pattern: women whose postpartum psychosis was not adequately recognized or treated before it ended in catastrophe.
The most famous is Andrea Yates, the Houston mother who drowned her five children in the family bathtub after experiencing severe postpartum psychosis, including commands “from Satan” she believed were commanding her to harm them. Before the killings, Yates had sought psychiatric help, including multiple hospitalizations, but her condition continued to deteriorate. She was initially convicted of capital murder in 2002, though that verdict was overturned on appeal in 2005. Yates was retried in 2006 and found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Another is Carol Coronado, a California mom who was sentenced to life in prison after stabbing her three daughters to death and attempting suicide by stabbing herself so deeply that she punctured the sac surrounding her heart. In the months before the tragedy, Coronado reportedly sought help multiple times — from her husband, family, and healthcare professionals — but those around her failed to recognize the severity of her condition. She remains incarcerated to this day. 
These women were also attentive mothers, by all accounts, who were overtaken by a psychiatric condition more common than many people realize. Postpartum psychosis affects approximately one in every 500 mothers, though the risk rises dramatically, to 20–30%, among women with bipolar disorder, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed. Yet when a new mother leaves the hospital, her chance of being screened for postpartum depression varies widely. When she is screened, it’s often through a 10-question survey developed in 1987. There is currently no widely used screening tool specifically designed to identify postpartum psychosis. 
&#8220;Throwing drugs at problems&#8221;
Expert psychiatric witnesses set to testify for the defense have also spoken publicly about Clancy’s case and what they describe as significant failures by her medical providers. Dr. Margaret Spinelli, a clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and founder of the university’s Women’s Program in Psychiatry, conducted a comprehensive forensic psychiatric evaluation of Clancy over multiple hours-long visits. She diagnosed Clancy with severe Bipolar I Disorder with psychosis and postpartum onset.
Spinelli said Clancy’s providers “never seemed to communicate with each other,” adding that Clancy “did all she could to obtain the appropriate treatment.”
The defense is also set to call Dr. Phillip Resnick, a prominent forensic psychiatrist who served as a key witness in the defense of Andrea Yates. 
“I don’t know anyone that could hear this case, and not just feel utterly enraged by what happened to her,” <a href="https://youtu.be/WUSH0D9LjSA?is=0ae2UHb71YGA1hLs">said</a> outside expert <a href="https://www.psychiatryredefined.org/faculty/josef-witt-doerring-md/">Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring</a>, a board-certified psychiatrist and leading expert in psychiatric drug side effects and withdrawal. 
“The senseless loss of life of these three children, for no reason, when it was so clear that she was responding poorly to these medications — I don’t know when the psychiatric establishment will wake up and realize that you can’t just keep on throwing drugs at problems.” 
And then, in a <a href="https://youtu.be/0s7CBT2_fOs?is=IR-to_ITygwTY-Zz">subsequent interview</a> with East Idaho News: “A terrible evil has occurred.” 
The Clancy case
The prosecution is nearing the end of its case, having worked through the vast majority of its 168-person potential witness list. Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham, who wears a large bow in her hair each day in what appears to be a tribute to Cora Clancy, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09qrVVj9yqI">contends</a> that Lindsay acted “intentionally, rationally, and swiftly,” meticulously planning the killings and staging a suicide attempt.
Buckingham and her co-counsel, Jennifer Sprague, have presented the jury with hours of testimony detailing the facts of the case, many of which have already been stipulated to by the defense. They’ve played the graphic 911 call, presented autopsy photographs of the dead children, and held up the Christmas pajamas baby Callan was wearing when he died.
But the prosecution’s tactics are not landing with the increasingly skeptical public in the way prosecuters may have expected. Messages of mourning, and of support, for Lindsay have overwhelmed social media. Think pieces <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/science/annals-of-medicine/what-we-still-dont-understand-about-postpartum-psychosis?utm_source=chatgpt.com">have</a> <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2026/02/21/opinion/letters-clancy-postpartum-psychosis-mothers/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">been</a> published in major media outlets about the culpability of Big Pharma in this particular tragedy. 
The prosecutors have failed to recognize an important cultural shift: We no longer live in a world where a judge could sentence Carol Coronado, a mentally ill mother, to life in prison with little public examination of the relational and medical failures that preceded the tragedy. And we’re past 2020, when a largely compliant public, driven by fear, surrendered extraordinary liberties in deference to government agencies without scrutiny of the science behind each consequential decision.
We live instead in an age of appropriate skepticism, where institutions are expected to prove their competence, not merely invoke their authority. If the jury reflects that broader public sentiment, it should prove consequential for Lindsay Clancy, whose failure by the system had deadly consequences.

The University of Michigan&#8217;s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts will eliminate letter grades from first-semester transcripts for incoming freshmen under a new pilot program to help new freshmen acclimate to college.
Instead of traditional letter grades, students will receive a &#8220;Pass&#8221; (P) or &#8220;No Credit&#8221; (NC) during their first semester. The <a href="https://lsa.umich.edu/lsa/academics/lsa-first-semester-grade-covering-pilot-program.html">university says</a> the change is intended to reduce stress tied to early grades and improve student mental health.
&#8220;Beginning in fall 2027, the College will designate all LSA first-year students’ first-semester grades as pass (P) or no credit (NC) on their transcripts,&#8221; the website explains. &#8220;While LSA students will still receive grades and instructor feedback in every course as they always have, final grades will not be recorded on their external transcripts and will not be reflected in their GPAs. LSA students’ official transcripts will state that all grades in the first semester are automatically designated as P/NC.&#8221;
The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts had <a href="https://lsa.umich.edu/content/dam/lsa-site-assets/documents/LSA-At-A-Glance.pdf">nearly 20,000</a> undergraduate students enrolled last year, making it the largest of the university&#8217;s schools and colleges.
One goal, according to the program, is to encourage students to try new things and take classes across a wide variety of subjects without worrying that their grades will hold them back if they find those subjects a struggle. Another is to ensure that students can build confidence in their academic abilities as they first acclimate to campus culture and the demands of college-level coursework.
&#8220;Helping all students establish early momentum has been recognized as the most important element in U-M’s campus-wide Student Success Initiative. We believe that covering grades will help students start strong and curb the mental health crisis unfolding among college-aged individuals,&#8221; the website reads.
The only students eligible for this pilot program will be incoming freshmen who start at the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts in the 2027 fall semester, and the &#8220;grade covering&#8221; will apply only to their first semester grades.
Although they will not appear on individual transcripts, some people will still have access to the students&#8217; actual letter grades and official GPA. The financial aid office will be able to access official grades to determine whether students are meeting required standards for scholarships and grants, and the athletic department will also be able to access grades to determine athletic eligibility.

Celebrities tend to balk at the idea that they might be seen as role models. Female pop stars who grew up with their fans, think Miley Cyrus, are particularly offended by the concept that the way they live might meaningfully influence someone else. But not Ariana Grande.
The 33-year-old singer and actress, who made a name for herself as a teenager on the Nickelodeon sitcom “Victorious,” said in an interview several years ago that she sees herself as an “honest” role model. 
“If I’m going to be a role model, the last thing I should be is perfect because that’s not realistic,” she <a href="https://people.com/music/ariana-grande-bbc-interview-everything-we-learned/">told</a> the BBC in 2018. “As long as I’m honest and genuine and I share with my fans my truest self, that’s the best that I can do because that’s allowing them to do the same thing.”
But it’s hard to be honest with your fans when you’re lying to yourself. 
Grande has spent the past few years pursuing a disturbing level of weight loss. The “Into You” singer, who also starred as Glinda in “Wicked,” looks as if she might actually be able to float away in a bubble without any movie magic to assist her. Lately, fans have been comparing her to Karen Carpenter, the lead singer of the Carpenters who died at age 32 after her eating disorder <a href="https://time.com/3685894/karen-carpenter-anorexia-death/">caused</a> her heart to fail. 
Yet somehow, Grande has spent the last few years criticizing fans for commenting on her body, suggesting that such concern amounts to something prurient, impudent, and decidedly anti-feminist. 
In a 2023 TikTok video she made to explain “what it means to be a person with a body,” she sweetly told fans to shove it. 
“I think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people’s bodies, no matter what,” she said. “If you think you’re saying something good and well-intentioned … we just shouldn’t.&#8221;
She claimed that her former, larger-but-still-super-skinny body was more unhealthy than the current model. Before, she was on antidepressants, drinking, and eating poorly. Yet, even while suggesting that her physical health had improved, she seemed to admit that there was something wrong; she just didn’t think it was anyone’s business. 
“You never know what someone is going through. So even if you are coming from a loving place and a caring place, that person probably is working on it or has a support system that they are working on it with and — you never know.”
What does “working on it” mean for her, when “it” looks a lot like an extreme, possibly life-threatening case of anorexia? 
She clearly wasn’t working on it, and she doubled down the next year while on the Wicked press tour.
“I’ve been kind of doing this in front of the public and kind of been, you know, a specimen in a petri dish, really, since I was 16 or 17,” Grande said. “So, I have heard it all. I’ve heard every version of it, of what’s wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it’s wrong for different reasons.”
Couched in the language of self-care and compassion and feminism, her pleas for privacy made it into the verbiage of various headlines. “Ariana Grande gives &#8216;loving reminder&#8217; about body-shaming,” <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/pop-culture-news/ariana-grande-gives-reminder-body-shaming-rcna246548">cooed</a> NBC. Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/ariana-grande-fights-back-against-body-shamers-critics-comment-her-weight-during-wicked-press-tour">put</a> her in a more active stance, declaring, “Ariana Grande fights back against body-shamers as critics comment on her weight during &#8216;Wicked&#8217; press tour.”
But now, finally, the body-shamers may have won. Thank God. 
On Friday, Grande released the music video for her new song “Petals.” In it, she attends a casting call, each time reinventing her image to make herself more appealing to the old, grizzled men behind the desk. 
The first time, one of the men writes a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it note: “couldn’t hurt to lose a few lbs.” The next time, she’s criticized for wearing too much makeup, and the third time, when she comes back with a boob job, the man scoffs that she’s had “too much work done.”
Then she lops off their heads with a chainsaw. Really.
Like Taylor Swift, she has the commentariat in mind with her video — and her lyrics. “But I don’t need someone to save me / &#8216;Cause this music and I will never die,” she trills. “This is not a cry for help / A couple million for my thoughts, I&#8217;ve got plenty / But I am not the victim / B*tch, I&#8217;m practically drowning in my blessings.”
Sawing off the heads of concerned fans seems like the wrong message to send, but her music video is saying exactly what she’s been proclaiming to fans for years: Talking about my dangerously skinny body is the same as telling me I’m too ugly or wear too much makeup or am too sexy or am not sexy enough. Gosh, we women just can’t win!
But the backlash this time was serious. “It’s not about wanting the old Ariana back. It’s about wanting her to be healthy,” reads a top comment on the video. “At this point, im judging her team, friends, and family. This is insane,” said another. 
Then, on Sunday, Grande’s reps announced she would be stepping out of the spotlight. 
“Ariana will be taking a step back from visibility after she completes the Eternal Sunshine Tour,” her representative <a href="https://deadline.com/2026/08/ariana-grande-exits-west-end-sunday-in-the-park-with-george-1237015542/">said</a>. (This exit isn’t immediate: The tour for her new album ends September 1.) 
“She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily,” continued her rep in a pointed statement, “and then taking a much-deserved break from public facing work and appearances which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny.”
Hopefully Grande can finally get the help she needs, unless this is an elaborate marketing stunt. What’s really remarkable is that she’s still pointing a finger at us, the onlookers. She’s healthy, her rep insists, and she deserves a break from your endless scrutiny, you sick losers. By the way, where’s my chainsaw?
What’s most important is that Grande eat a cheeseburger, preferably with some tallow fries, but she also owes honesty to her fans. She is skeletal, visibly unhealthy by any objective measure, and insisting otherwise could cause vulnerable viewers to spiral in the same way. Criticizing her weight isn’t a matter of taste the way one might comment on her ever-present high ponytail. 
Ariana Grande is wasting away before our eyes, and she’s too afraid to admit it. We shouldn’t be.

A California judge on Monday dismissed all charges against a radiologist accused of intentionally driving his family off a Northern California cliff in 2023 after he completed a court-ordered mental health diversion program.
<a href="https://abc7news.com/post/judge-drops-attempted-murder-charges-dharmesh-patel-accused-driving-family-off-cliff-devils-slide/19459898/">Dharmesh Patel</a>, 45, was charged with attempted murder after driving his Tesla off a 250-foot cliff along the Pacific Coast Highway near an area known as Devil’s Slide in Pacifica, about 14 miles south of San Francisco. His 41-year-old wife, 7-year-old daughter, and 4-year-old son were inside the vehicle when it dropped hundreds of feet. All four survived the January 2023 crash, which first responders described as an “absolute miracle.” 
The Tesla crashed into a rocky outcropping, flipped several times, and came to rest on its wheels, the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/technology-california-san-francisco-04504cc68d9c753ee6095627b66af612">Associated Press</a> reported. Firefighters had to cut the family out of the wreckage. 
After surviving the crash, Patel&#8217;s wife, Bubna, told investigators she believed her husband &#8220;did it on purpose&#8221; and needed a &#8220;psych evaluation,&#8221; <a href="https://www.ktvu.com/news/dharmesh-patel-devils-slide-crash-charges-dismissed">according to local outlet KTVU.</a> She added that her husband suffered from depression. 
&#8220;He said he was going to drive off the cliff,&#8221; she said, according to KTVU. The Southern California-based family was reportedly in the Bay Area visiting relatives at the time of the crash. 
After his arrest, Patel told a psychiatrist he believed his children would be kidnapped and trafficked, according to the Associated Press. Patel pleaded not guilty, <a href="https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww2.mbc.ca.gov%2FBreezePDL%2Fdocument.aspx%3Fpath%3D%255cDIDOCS%255c20251125%255cDMRAAAJD4%255c%26did%3DAAAJD251125225913022.DID&amp;data=05%7C02%7CORodriguez%40ap.org%7C7038575fa1494d9eb9c808dedc63870b%7Ce442e1abfd6b4ba3abf3b020eb50df37%7C1%7C0%7C639190517655511618%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=NM6adS8wkq5oHLQf8O9zZo2IfFMRY4wf6%2FuGvsg8fSE%3D&amp;reserved=0">surrendered</a> his California medical license, and remained in jail without bail until 2024.
He was ultimately released after a judge found him eligible for an outpatient mental health treatment program. He moved in with his parents in San Mateo County and was monitored with a GPS bracelet. 
On Monday, a San Mateo County judge dismissed the charges after Patel successfully completed the two-year mental health diversion program, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-driver-car-drove-off-cliff-1863d68448fe091a99817ebc4dc230cd">Associated Press.</a> 
“The judge was required by law to dismiss the charges,” San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe told the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-driver-car-drove-off-cliff-1863d68448fe091a99817ebc4dc230cd">outlet</a>, referring to a 2023 California bill that allowed Patel to qualify for the mental health program.
Patel’s wife later testified that she had forgiven him and did not want him to be prosecuted, according to the AP.
In court, San Mateo prosecutors opposed diversion for Patel, saying the former doctor &#8220;got the break of a lifetime,&#8221; <a href="https://abc7news.com/post/judge-drops-attempted-murder-charges-dharmesh-patel-accused-driving-family-off-cliff-devils-slide/19459898/">according to ABC7. </a>
Wagstaffe said he is working with lawmakers to prevent defendants charged with attempted murder from qualifying for mental health diversion.
“We’ll try again in the future,” he told the AP. “We’re not giving up.”

Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) revealed Tuesday that the undisclosed medical condition that kept him away from Congress for nearly four months was depression, ending months of speculation about one of the House GOP&#8217;s most closely watched absences.
Returning to the House floor for the first time since early March, Kean disclosed that he was hospitalized after experiencing health concerns and was ultimately diagnosed with depression, a condition he described as far more debilitating than many people realize.
&#8220;Many people think it is feeling sad. It is so much more than that,&#8221; Kean told colleagues. &#8220;It is physical, it is emotional, and until you experience it yourself, it is difficult to fully understand how powerful this illness can be.&#8221;
The announcement comes after Kean missed more than 100 House votes and largely disappeared from public view, creating headaches for House Republican leadership as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) attempted to navigate the chamber&#8217;s razor-thin majority.
Kean last cast a vote on March 5 before abruptly stepping away from Congress. His office initially described the situation only as a &#8220;personal medical issue,&#8221; repeatedly declining to elaborate while assuring constituents the congressman expected to make a full recovery.
Earlier this month, Kean&#8217;s political adviser, Harrison Neely, announced the congressman would return to Washington on June 30 and promised he would be &#8220;fully transparent&#8221; about his condition.
On Tuesday, Kean explained that he initially entered the hospital for medical testing before receiving his diagnosis. &#8220;I was given the diagnosis of depression,&#8221; he said. Kean said doctors advised him to remain hospitalized because it offered the quickest path to recovery. &#8220;I was hesitant,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t think I had time for it.&#8221;
The second-term Republican acknowledged that when he previously told constituents he expected to return within weeks, he believed that timeline was accurate. &#8220;But as the over 48 million of my fellow Americans being treated for this illness have come to discover, there is no timeline for healing,&#8221; Kean said. &#8220;Today I stand before you healthier, stronger and excited to return to the work that I love.&#8221; Kean characterized himself as &#8220;a private person by nature,&#8221; explaining why he chose not to disclose his diagnosis sooner.
He also encouraged others struggling with mental illness to seek treatment. &#8220;Asking for help is not a weakness,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It is a strength.&#8221; Despite revealing the reason for his prolonged absence, Kean left Capitol Hill immediately after delivering his remarks without answering reporters&#8217; questions, leaving several unresolved what initially prompted his hospitalization.
Speaker Johnson said he had repeatedly encouraged Kean to be more forthcoming with the public during his absence. &#8220;I encouraged him all along to be as transparent as possible,&#8221; Johnson told reporters. &#8220;I&#8217;m glad he finally has.&#8221; Johnson declined to criticize Kean further, saying the decision ultimately rested with the New Jersey congressman. &#8220;It&#8217;s his personal issue,&#8221; the speaker said.
Kean represents New Jersey&#8217;s highly competitive 7th Congressional District, one of the Democrats&#8217; top pickup opportunities heading into November. His absence became an issue in the race as Democrats questioned whether constituents were receiving adequate representation while Kean remained out of public view. Democratic nominee Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, is expected to challenge Kean in what is projected to be one of the country&#8217;s most competitive House contests.
Before Tuesday&#8217;s announcement, President Donald Trump and House Republican leaders had continued backing Kean&#8217;s reelection campaign despite his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gop-rep-set-to-return-to-congress-after-he-went-mia-for-months">absence</a>. Trump endorsed Kean earlier this month, while Johnson repeatedly defended the congressman&#8217;s right to medical privacy and urged reporters to be patient.
Kean, the son of former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean Sr., missed more than 100 House votes during his absence, though his office maintained that he continued to perform constituent services and campaign activities remotely.
The congressman&#8217;s remarks drew support from some lawmakers who have publicly discussed their own struggles with mental illness. At the same time, critics argued that while Kean&#8217;s diagnosis deserved empathy, his constituents also deserved greater transparency during an absence that stretched nearly four months.
New York Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres, who has spoken openly about living with depression, wrote on <a href="https://x.com/RitchieTorres/status/2071993828534346043">X</a> that he had &#8220;deep sympathy for anyone struggling with mental illness,&#8221; but added that &#8220;public office carries a duty of transparency.&#8221;
&#8220;When a public official is absent for an extended period,&#8221; Torres wrote, &#8220;the public has a right to an honest explanation.&#8221;

As a clinical psychologist in the progressive business environment of New York City, I’ve spent years listening to high-functioning professionals who feel trapped by unspoken rules about what they’re “allowed” to say — or even feel — about unfair treatment at work. One story from my practice has stayed with me because it mirrors what so many men (and others) are experiencing right now, while also revealing a deeper, often-overlooked cost of these policies. The vignette below is adapted from my book, “Can I Say That? Why Free Speech Matters and How to Use It Fearlessly” (Skyhorse, 2025).
Mark came to therapy because he was struggling with intimacy and commitment issues in his relationships with women. During our sessions, as we explored his patterns and past disappointments, he casually mentioned — with a sardonic laugh — that he’d been passed over for promotion at his hedge fund. A human resources colleague had confidentially explained that the company’s diversity mandate meant they needed to hire people who “don’t look like you” — a straight white man. Mark had initially repressed his disappointment, shrugged it off, and convinced himself it was “fine.” He didn’t immediately see any connection between that experience and his difficulties with women until we gently revisited the story. Only when he finally narrated the full experience aloud, journaled about it, and reconnected with the anger and anxiety he had buried did the link become clear. That honest expression not only helped him explore legal options and reclaim his sense of self-efficacy at work, but it also freed him to show up more authentically in his personal life — dropping the guarded persona that had kept him from forming deeper connections with women.
Mark’s story was never abstract to me. And today, it feels prophetic.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently filed a federal lawsuit against The New York Times, alleging that the paper discriminated against a longtime white male editor with extensive experience in real estate journalism. Despite meeting every qualification for the Deputy Real Estate Editor role — including the very expertise listed in the job posting — he was excluded from final interviews. The position went instead to an external multiracial female candidate with little to no real estate experience, the lawsuit alleges. According to the EEOC, the Times’ own race- and sex-based diversity goals directly influenced the decision.
This is exactly the kind of institutional pressure I describe in my book as one of the hidden dangers of self-censorship. When talented professionals like Mark (or this New York Times editor) are told, implicitly or explicitly, that their demographic profile disqualifies them from advancement, they face eroded self-efficacy, increased vulnerability to anxiety and depression, and the intellectual deprivation that comes from not being able to speak openly about what’s happening.
The New York Times case is far from isolated. Under EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas, the agency has actively encouraged white men experiencing race or sex discrimination to come forward, emphasizing that Title VII protects everyone, including supposedly privileged demographic groups. We’re seeing a wave of complaints and actions — investigations into companies like Nike, a $500,000 settlement with a Planned Parenthood affiliate over alleged discrimination against white employees, and more men finding the courage to document and challenge what they’ve quietly endured.
What these forced diversity programs often fail to acknowledge is the relational damage they inflict. By institutionalizing favoritism based on race, sex, or other demographics, they don’t just create individual distress and unfairness — they actively weaken relationships between the very groups they claim to want to place on equal footing. When high performers sense that advancement is no longer tied primarily to merit, suspicion and resentment naturally follow. Colleagues begin to wonder, “Was that promotion earned, or engineered?” Women and minorities may face quiet, valid doubts about whether their success is viewed as legitimate, while men like Mark carry unspoken grievances that erode trust and authenticity in both professional and personal interactions. The result is division, mistrust, and a subtle fracturing of the very social bonds these initiatives purport to strengthen.
In my practice and in the book, I explain why this matters far beyond politics or any single hiring decision. When we stifle honest conversation about fairness in promotions, hiring, and culture, we lose the cognitive gifts of language that help us organize chaotic thoughts, enhance problem-solving through open dialogue, build insight, and reduce anxiety by naming what’s real. Self-censorship doesn’t protect anyone — it breeds resentment, isolation, and the very groupthink that undermines healthy workplaces and relationships. It also weakens the authentic connections that are essential for emotional resilience across all lines of difference.
Mark’s breakthrough came when he stopped performing acceptance and started using the practical tools in Part Two of the book: narrating his experience, journaling, taking ownership of past self-censorship, and eventually speaking up. The healthy response to a sense of injustice is action. Taking appropriate legal steps — like filing an EEOC complaint — is not only justified but emotionally satisfying, helping restore self-efficacy and release buried resentment.
I wrote <a href="https://amzn.to/4eAOyb9">Can I Say That? Why Free Speech Matters and How to Use It Fearlessly</a>, because free speech isn’t just a constitutional principle; it’s a mental health imperative. Suppressing legitimate grievances about merit-based fairness doesn’t create equity — it creates exactly the psychological and cultural stagnation I see in my clients. Words are not violence — but pretending these dynamics don’t exist does cause real harm: to individuals, to organizations, and to the authentic connections that make work and life worthwhile.
If you’re a man (or anyone) who has been quietly passed over, I encourage you to do what I helped Mark do: name it, document it, and consider your options — whether that’s internal advocacy, legal consultation through the EEOC, or simply reclaiming your voice with the people you trust. The tools are in the book for a reason.
We deserve workplaces where competence speaks louder than checkboxes, and where we can talk honestly about how to get there — without sowing the very division these programs were meant to heal. That starts with being willing to say what’s true — even when it’s uncomfortable.

Could mental health awareness be making people psychologically sicker? That’s the thesis of a <a href="https://t.co/IWdKHYSvds">fascinating paper</a> by psychologists at the University of Toronto Dasha Sandra and Michael Inzlicht. There’s been a massive increase in both the number of people being diagnosed with a mental health condition and the number of people on psychiatric medications, while mental health awareness campaigns and school programs screening students for mental health disorders are ubiquitous. So why does it seem like our problems with mental illness aren’t getting better?
It may sound counterintuitive to suggest that increasing awareness and education about any condition could make that condition worse. After all, screening and awareness about illnesses are designed to help people who either don’t know that they have the illness or are suffering in silence. When it comes to things like high blood pressure or cancer, screening saves lives. 
When it comes to mental health, though, more and more evidence is showing that making people aware of the problem <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/may/20/mental-health-lessons-school-dont-work-mindfulness?CMP=share_btn_url">makes people worse, not better</a>. Therapists and psychiatrists are seeing patients come to their offices with self-diagnosed conditions that they picked up from TikTok. Parents and teachers report that kids are struggling more and more as they complain that their mental illnesses are impairing their daily lives. What’s happening here?
Sandra and Inzlicht argue that there are four key processes causing well-intentioned mental health awareness efforts to backfire: concept creep, nocebo effects, prevalence inflation, and illness self-labeling. Each one in and of itself nudges people toward developing or worsening mental illness, but all of them work together to decrease the threshold for considering something as a disorder, encourage people to consider normal feelings as pathological, and reinforce negative expectations.  Let’s break each one of them down.
1. Concept Creep
<a href="https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2027-23317-001.html">Concept creep</a> is when a definition expands over time to include more things or less intense versions of the thing it originally referred to. Trauma is a perfect example; over the past few decades, the official definition of trauma in diagnosing PTSD expanded from events that were well outside the range of normal human experience to anything life-threatening and then further to simply hearing about the traumatic event happening to a loved one. Unofficially, people nowadays have a tendency to use “trauma” to describe just about any bad thing they’ve experienced. When more and more people consider themselves victims of trauma, they’re all the more likely to feel powerless and unable to overcome the bad things they’ve experienced.
2. Nocebo Effects
You’ve heard of the placebo effect; when someone takes a pill, he&#8217;s more likely to feel better even if it doesn’t contain an actual drug. The <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17437199.2024.2394682#d1e328">nocebo effect</a> is the opposite: If patients are told that a pill can cause headache and nausea, they’re more likely to experience negative “side effects” even if the pill they took doesn’t contain any active ingredients. If someone watches a reel explaining eight symptoms of depression, someone who has two of those symptoms and thinks “I have depression” is at risk for developing more of those symptoms because she expects her experience to follow what she&#8217;s learned from social media.
3. Prevalence Inflation
Prevalence inflation has to do with classifying normal experiences of stress, worry, or sadness as symptoms of a disorder. Everyone has negative feelings from time to time, but people are easily confused by awareness campaigns suggesting that these feelings might be the tip of a psychiatric iceberg. Once someone is convinced that their feelings represent some kind of psychological pathology, it’s a downhill slide to reinterpreting everything in their life through the lens of “I have anxiety” or “I’m depressed.” The more people who consider themselves depressed or anxious, the more common the problem seems and the more people feel the need to describe their feelings in the most severe terms. 
4. Illness Self-Labeling
Developing the symptoms of a rare disorder after watching influencers talk about their diagnosis may be an extreme example, but it’s easy for people to get sicker when they <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/21677026251338829">label themselves as mentally ill</a>. If someone expects that “being depressed” means feeling powerless and suicidal, they can easily slip into acting as though their powerlessness is the dominant feature of their illness. This, in turn, makes their lives worse because they are less likely to exercise their agency and make good choices for themselves.
This is discouraging, but there are a few things that we can do. First, schools should shut down broad-based mental health screening programs and nonspecific group therapies because these programs have mostly been shown to worsen mental health symptoms. It’s clear that asking students over and over if they are depressed, anxious, or traumatized makes them more likely to feel like the day-to-day ups and downs of life are symptoms of a psychological disorder.
Second, we can educate people about how self-diagnosis and nocebo effects can be harmful to their mental health. Inzlicht and Sandra did <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/psychological-medicine/article/inform-and-do-no-harm-nocebo-education-reduces-false-selfdiagnosis-caused-by-mental-health-awareness/74B66FDBFDD635A0951337FE9FC4CC9D">another study</a> with some of their colleagues showing that nocebo education was helpful in reducing false diagnoses of ADHD. Strange as it may sound, we need more awareness about the dangers of mental health awareness!
Finally, those of us who want to improve mental health should focus on encouraging behaviors and promoting messages that are good for everyone but especially those who are suffering from psychiatric illnesses. Exercise, adequate sleep, and vigorous in-person social interactions promote emotional well-being at any age or level of illness, and helping people feel as though they are capable of improving their lives is a key factor in improving their mental health.
Psychiatry and therapy can be lifesaving for people who are suffering from mental health disorders, but <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Resisting-Therapy-Culture-Dangers-Psychology/dp/1514012685/">therapy culture</a> is downright toxic when it’s applied across the board. Despite good intentions, spreading awareness and widespread screening for psychological problems can cause these problems or make them worse. As Inzlicht and Sandra note, with appropriate caution we can help people who are suffering from mental health disorders without accidentally creating more of them.

Are We Creating Mental Illness? The Hidden Forces Turning Stress Into Sickness

President Donald Trump on Saturday signed a sweeping executive order aimed at fast-tracking access to psychedelic-based treatments for veterans suffering from PTSD, depression, and other severe mental health conditions.
On paper, the order directs agencies like the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs to accelerate clinical trials, cut bureaucratic delays, and expand “right to try” access for patients who have exhausted traditional treatment options. But the real-world impact is far more immediate, and far more personal. For millions of Americans, this isn’t an abstract policy debate, it’s about whether treatments that show real promise are stuck in years of red tape while people continue to struggle, relapse, or fall through the cracks of a mental health system that often relies on trial-and-error prescriptions.
Trump framed the move as a long-overdue shift toward urgency.
“These treatments are currently in the advanced stages of clinical trials to ensure that they&#8217;re both safe and effective,” Trump said. “But usually with things like this, nothing ever happens … we’re changing that.”
The executive order builds on a growing body of research suggesting psychedelic therapies, particularly compounds like ibogaine, can deliver dramatic results where conventional treatments fail. Trump pointed to a Stanford study in which special operations veterans saw an 80 to 90 percent reduction in depression and anxiety symptoms within a month.
At the signing ceremony, one veteran put it more bluntly.
“This treatment saved my life,” he told the president. “Helped me get off opiates … sleep for the first time in over 10 years.”
“And you have no doubt?” Trump asked.
“Zero,&#8221; he answered.
“To me, that’s the best research of all,” Trump said.
More than 14 million Americans suffer from serious mental illness, according to the White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2026/04/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-is-accelerating-medical-treatments-for-serious-mental-illness/">fact sheet</a> accompanying the order, and for many, existing medications and therapies simply don’t work. Even when they do, they often come with significant side effects or require years of adjustments. Among veterans, the crisis is even more acute, with more than 6,000 suicides per year for over two decades, a statistic that has remained stubbornly high despite billions in federal spending.
The order attempts to break that cycle by not just funding research, but forcing the system to move faster. It directs the FDA to prioritize psychedelic drugs already designated as “breakthrough therapies,” a classification reserved for treatments that show substantial improvement over existing options. It also pushes regulators to shorten review timelines that can typically stretch close to a year, and in some cases, much longer.
At the same time, the administration is expanding access before full approval.
