<p class="p1">While Disney and ABC were <a href="https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/nicholas-fondacaro/2026/05/22/fcc-chairman-responds-disneys-claim-view-bona-fide-news"><span class="s1">duking it out </span></a>with the Federal Communications Commission over whether or not <i>The View</i> was a “bona fide news” program (HINT: they’re not), they were proving that they certainly were not bona fide historians. From the origins of Memorial Day to claims that President Joe Biden never embarrassingly fell asleep while performing his presidential duties, <i>The View </i>cast was engaging in revisionist history this week.</p>
<p class="p1">While attacking Secretary of War Pete Hegseth for his Memorial Day speech at West Point and claiming he was ignorant of military history, co-hosts Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin claimed he was “losing sight of the first Memorial Day.”</p>
<p class="p1">According to her, Memorial Day was a holiday celebrated by blacks and women before becoming popularized by whites.</p>

<p class="p1"><em>HAINES: It was celebrated because Union soldiers, black soldiers that were put in mass graves, a lot of the black community came out and said, “We&#8217;re going to honor these soldiers by giving them a proper burial for giving their life to a country that did not treat them as equals.”</em></p>
<p class="p1"><em>HOSTIN: So, Memorial Day was started by black people!</em></p>
<p class="p1"><em>HAINES: By black people, and then a year later, it was women who laid flowers on the graves of these people.</em></p>

<p class="p1">The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs tells a slightly different story. According to the VA’s <a href="https://www.cem.va.gov/history/Memorial-Day-history.asp"><span class="s1">Memorial Day history </span></a>page, it was a multi-racial affair: “In the waning years of the Civil War (1861–1865) and immediately afterward, communities in the North and South, Black and White, decorated soldiers&#8217; graves with floral honors on springtime ‘decoration days.’”</p>
<p class="p1">Even left-wing <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/the-origins-of-memorial-day-and-how-it-has-evolved"><span class="s1">PBS doesn’t acknowledge</span></a> a singular racial origin, noting that “The practice was already widespread. Waterloo, New York, began a formal observance on May 5, 1866, and was later proclaimed to be the holiday&#8217;s birthplace.” PBS does note that blacks in Charleston, South Carolina, held a memorial for Union dead who died in a Confederate prison, but it doesn’t appear to be for only black soldiers.</p>
<p class="p1">Later in the week, they tried to do some more revisionist history on a more recent event. Since President Donald Trump’s health was the topic <i>du jour</i>, they toed the liberal media line that Trump was supposedly falling asleep all over the place.</p>
<p class="p1">Co-host Joy Behar seemed to scoff at the notion by bitterly asking, “Wait a second. Joe Biden didn&#8217;t fall asleep, did he?”</p>
<p class="p1">Well Joy, while meeting with the leaders of African nations in Angola, <a href="https://x.com/jacobkschneider/status/1864403426303529321?s=20"><span class="s1">Biden fell asleep</span></a>. When attending the late President Jimmy Carter’s funeral at the National Cathedral, <a href="https://x.com/jesseyjay94/status/2053911230528499796?s=20"><span class="s1">Biden fell asleep</span></a>. When attending the COP26 summit in Glasgow, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBUgHkbtm9I"><span class="s1">Biden fell asleep</span></a>.</p>
<p class="p1">To brag about “what Sleepy Joe got done while he was asleep,” moderator Whoopi Goldberg read from a note card someone gave her and claimed Biden “oversaw an historic economy that produced over 16 million jobs” and “revitalized NATO.”</p>
<p class="p1">Obviously, no serious person gives Biden credit for that number, since it was the economy coming back online as COVID lockdowns were being lifted. Even <a href="https://thedispatch.com/article/assessing-claims-about-job-growth-under-joe-biden/"><span class="s1">The Dispatch admits </span></a>that. Meanwhile, the pressure Trump put on NATO in his first term and the war in Ukraine were what spurred the members of the military alliance to invest in rearmament.</p>
<p class="p1">ABC News shouldn’t be allowed to rewrite our history like this. Especially the parts we&#8217;ve seen with our own eyes.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A Gold Star wife&#8217;s simple Memorial Day request sparked an outpouring of support from Americans, including <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tulsi-gabbard-resigns-from-trump-admin">outgoing</a> Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It all started on Sunday, when Sharrell Anne Shaw posted a message on X, asking whether anyone visiting Arlington National Cemetery could stop by her late husband&#8217;s grave and share a photo. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“This is probably a long shot, but if anybody happens to be in DC this weekend and plans on visiting Arlington, I would love to see a fresh photo of my husband’s grave in Section 60,” she wrote. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Shaw identified her husband as Staff Sgt. Alan W. Shaw of B Co 1/12 Cav, 1st Cavalry Division, who was killed in Iraq in 2007.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The responses started flooding in, with many people promising to visit the grave or honor Shaw&#8217;s sacrifice on Memorial Day. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Several, including Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, shared photos of themselves visiting the grave at Arlington National Cemetery.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“It was an honor to visit your husband’s grave today on your behalf, and to pay my respects,&#8221; Gabbard wrote. &#8220;Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to the loved ones they left behind.  Thank you for your service and sacrifice.” </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Monday, Shaw reflected on the viral response to the outpouring of support from everyone who honored her request.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Last night, I made a simple request on X,” she posted. “I asked if anybody visiting Arlington National Cemetery for Memorial Day would stop by Alan’s grave and leave a photo for our family. What happened next honestly caught me off guard.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“By this afternoon, dozens of Americans from all walks of life had made the walk to Section 60 to visit SSG Alan W. Shaw. Veterans. Families,” she said. “Complete strangers. People who had never met Alan, but chose to honor him anyway&#8230; </span>For one day on social media, people put aside the constant noise and negativity and came together for something bigger than themselves. My notifications filled with photos, kind messages, prayers, and stories from people honoring not just Alan, but so many of our fallen heroes. I don’t think people fully understand what moments like this mean to Gold Star families.&#8221;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Staff Sgt. Shaw was killed in action in Iraq on February 9, 2007. </span></p>
<p>In a separate Memorial Day post, Sharrell Shaw reflected on the holiday&#8217;s meaning for Gold Star families.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Memorial Day will always mean more to our family than cookouts or a long weekend,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;It’s the sound of boots on concrete. The weight of a folded flag in shaking hands. Three children growing up with memories instead of a father.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">She added, “But over the years, I’ve also realized something else. The men we honor today did not give everything so America would sit in mourning forever. They believed in life. In freedom. In family. In backyard barbecues, ballgames, loud laughter, and the simple privilege of being home.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“So yes, remember them. Speak their names. Teach your children who they were. Fly the flag. Visit the cemetery. And then live.”</span></p>

Lacking any musical training, Butterfield hummed a new melody to his brigade bugler, Oliver Wilcox Norton, who scratched out the notes on the back of an envelope.</p>

Tidball used the new tune to bury a soldier, fearing that a traditional three-gun salute would tip off nearby Confederate troops. By 1891, the U.S. Army made the 24-note salute mandatory for all military funerals, locking it into American history forever.</p>

<p>WASHINGTON— President Donald Trump will honor Memorial Day by paying tribute to fallen American heroes at Arlington National Cemetery, the Daily Wire can first report.</p>
<p>The president and members of his administration will join Gold Star families and service members at the cemetery on Monday, a White House official shared. Trump will visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and then will deliver remarks nearby.</p>
<p>He will be joined by top members of his administration, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, Secretary of Veteran Affairs Doug Collins, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine.</p>
<p>“President Trump will visit Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day to pay tribute to our fallen heroes whose sacrifice has kept our nation free,&#8221; White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales told The Daily Wire. &#8220;These patriots represent the very best of us, and the President will express the enduring gratitude of our entire nation.&#8221;</p>

<p>More than 430,000 men and women <a href="https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Funerals/Funeral-Information">are buried in the cemetery</a>, including veterans, their families, and their eligible dependents.</p>
<p>The president spent last Memorial Day in a similar fashion, attending a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with key members of his administration in 2025.</p>
<p>&#8220;In every hour of peril, in every moment of crisis, American warriors have left behind the blessings of home and family to answer their nation&#8217;s call,&#8221; Trump said last year. &#8220;They&#8217;ve offered all that they had within them, and given their last breaths to each and every one of us that we might live safe, and breathe free. This morning we pay tribute to their immortal deeds.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;We share in the sorrow of their beloved families. And as one nation, we give thanks for the ultimate gift they have so selflessly given to all of us. These warriors, and that&#8217;s what they are, is great, great warriors, picked up their mantle of duty and service knowing that to live for others meant always that they might die for others.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier sits at the top of Arlington National Cemetery and overlooks Washington, D.C.</p>
<p>The cemetery sits on property that was originally a plantation owned by George Washington&#8217;s grandson, passed down to Robert E. Lee&#8217;s wife, seized by the U.S. Army and used as a national cemetery in light of the mass casualties of the Civil War.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">All 50 states now report average gas prices at $4 or higher, adding more pain at the pump for travelers ahead of Memorial Day weekend.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As of Wednesday, the national average price for a gallon of gas in the U.S. stands at $4.56,</span> <a href="https://gasprices.aaa.com/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">according to AAA</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a slight increase from a week earlier and up 49 cents from a month ago. One year ago, the average price of gas sat at $3.17. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Gas prices have slowly but steadily climbed for three straight months since President Trump, on February 28, launched military strikes against Iran&#8217;s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. In response, the Iranian government closed the Strait of Hormuz, significantly straining global oil stockpiles and pushing energy prices higher. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;We cannot let them have a nuclear weapon. You want to see the world exploded? You want to see a problem? <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Georgia has the lowest gas prices at $4.01 per gallon, according to AAA. Other Southern states, including Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Alabama, also report prices just over $4.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Across the country, California has the highest average gas prices in the United States, with a gallon of gas averaging $6.14 in the Golden State. The top Democrats running for California governor refuse to consider suspending the 61.2-cent state-imposed gas tax,</span> <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/top-democrats-could-instantly-lower-gas-prices-they-refuse-to-do-it"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Daily Wire previously reported</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Both Republicans in the race, former Fox News host Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, said they were in favor of suspending the tax.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Other Western states report higher-than-average gas prices, including Washington at $5.79, Hawaii at $5.65, Oregon at $5.35, and Nevada at $5.27. Gas prices in the Rust Belt, including battleground Michigan, report higher-than-average as well. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite the pain at the pump, AAA projects 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles for Memorial Day between Thursday, May 21, and Monday, May 25. The forecast is slightly higher than last year and sets a new Memorial Day weekend record with 39.1 million people traveling by car and 3.66 million expected to fly to their destinations, according to AAA. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After the ceremony, Trump delivered </span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmpBQLo-X10"><span style="font-weight: 400;">remarks</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> marking Memorial Day and the sacrifice of members of the United States military.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“These warriors picked up the mantle of duty and service, knowing that to live for others meant always that they might die for others. They asked nothing. They gave everything. And we owe them everything and more,” Trump said.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">During his remarks, Trump told the stories of a couple fallen heroes. He told of Senior Chief Petty Officer Shannon Kent, who was killed by a suicide bomber in Syria in 2019. Kent was the wife of Joe Kent, a former GOP candidate for Congress who now serves as the chief of staff for Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The president also spoke of Senior Master Sergeant Elroy Harworth, who was killed while fighting in Vietnam.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Trump honored fallen warriors, calling them “America’s best and bravest.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“We just revere their incredible legacy,” said Trump. “We salute them in their eternal and everlasting glory. And we continue our relentless pursuit of America’s destiny as we make our nation stronger, prouder, freer, and greater than ever before.”</span></p>

<p>As a medic, my grandfather sat by countless hospital beds during the Korean War.</p>
<p>He would write letters home for men who knew they might never see their families again. Those moments became powerful memories for him. They were a weight he carried for decades. He bore the burden of memory — a burden we are now in danger of forgetting.</p>
<p>Memorial Day isn’t just a holiday. It’s a defiant stand against our own human tendency to let the sacrifices of the fallen fade into the noise of our fast-paced lives. We must remember, because the stories of those who gave everything for our freedom are the part of our story that makes everything possible for us in our current time.</p>
<p>My grandfather carried with him that weight of remembering until his final days. My wife’s grandfather, a bomber pilot in Vietnam, carried a similar burden. Like my grandfather, he rarely spoke of his service. But when those of us in the family who served sit with him, he begins to share.</p>
<p>His stories are vivid, etched with the clarity of a man who could never forget the skies he flew or the comrades who didn’t return. He holds on to the memories, because they matter. Listening to him, I have come to realize how vital it is to hold those stories close. They aren’t just his — they’re ours. They are American stories. Stories of our country&#8217;s finest, who died so that my children and I can be free.</p>
<p>Our culture, driven by a relentless news cycle and a forward-looking obsession, often forgets. It’s our own human nature to let the past slip away, to assume our freedoms and comforts are a given. But this forgetting comes at a cost. As my grandfather’s stories taught me, memory is not passive. It is an active choice, a discipline.</p>
<p>Scripture repeatedly underscores this truth. Deuteronomy 5:15 tells us to “Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.&#8221;</p>
<p>God commands His people to remember. Why? Because without memory, we lose our sense of who we are. We begin to think history began with us, ignoring the countless souls who have paved our way. Memorial Day is our national reminder of this truth, a day to recall the men and women who laid down their lives so we might live free.</p>
<p>The weight of memory is not meant to crush us but to ground us. It reminds us that our freedom is not free—it was purchased at a great price. The families of the fallen walk among us, carrying their own quiet burdens. We honor them by listening to their stories, by reading about the sacrifices made, by teaching our children the names and deeds of those who served. My grandfather never forgot. My wife’s grandfather never forgot. Their memories shaped them, and now they shape us.</p>
<p>There is something else about remembering those who died so that we might live. It reminds us that their sacrifice demands our action. They gave their lives so that we can live. We have an obligation to take that seriously and live with meaning. We have a duty to march forward and seek victory. To do what is good. To live our lives, and pass our heritage down to our children. If we do not, we belittle the sacrifices made on our behalf.</p>
<p>It is time for us all to discipline ourselves and remember. We must be thankful for the sacrifice and embrace our great heritage. We must live our lives like they have been protected at great cost — because they have been. We must remember.</p>

The Weight Of Memory: Why Memorial Day Matters

<p>With Memorial Day so near, I’m thinking of active-duty military, their families, and our veterans.</p>
<p>It’s impossible to let this national day of commemoration pass without addressing the tragic statistics of military and veteran suicide. Twenty-two veterans commit suicide each day. That’s one veteran every 65 minutes.</p>
<p>A 2024 Pentagon study revealed another devastating statistic: American soldiers are now <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2024/06/11/military-suicide-defense-department-pentagon-study/73983842007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more likely</a> to die from suicide than from any other cause. In an attempt to provide help and resources for our struggling veterans, the <a href="https://988lifeline.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Suicide Crisis Hotline</a>, and organizations such as the Military Suicide Awareness have been created. But is it enough?</p>
<p>Our soldiers may no longer be fighting in traditional ground wars. But those engaged in remote operations can nonetheless suffer invisible wounds just as crippling as an IED blast.</p>
<p>Almost 7% of veterans will <a href="https://www.ptsd.va.gov/understand/common/common_veterans.asp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suffer from PTSD</a> in their lifetime. These struggles not only affect veterans, but can have a cascading impact on their families, too. It is vital to recognize the great impact active duty and veteran life has on our military families. In 2022, for example, 146 military family members died by suicide, including 83 spouses and 53 dependents, the majority of whom were under 18.</p>
<p>Often, military spouses are expected to be the glue that holds the family together. We are expected to be resilient and strong despite the deployments, raising children alone while repeatedly losing community because of frequent relocations.</p>
<p>But military spouses often suffer in silence. Depression, under the best of circumstances, is isolating. But when you experience frequent moves and loss of community and support, it only adds to that sense of loneliness and having to “deal with it” on your own.</p>
<p>I struggled with the shame and embarrassment for not being able to “tough it out” and handle everything while my spouse was away serving. I struggled with the guilt of not feeling strong enough. It is an isolating battle, and it’s almost easier to sink into yourself rather than risk judgment or become a poor reflection on your spouse when you finally do ask for help.</p>
<p>These struggles are often overlooked by both the military and civilian communities. But they shouldn’t be.</p>
<p>We as a society need to end the stigma surrounding mental health for our soldiers and our military families. Supporting our veterans and military families starts with compassion, education, and collective action.</p>
<p>It’s time to share stories of veterans and spouses who have sought help and found healing to inspire hope and reassurance. We need to launch mentorship programs that pair a healed service member or spouse with one facing struggles to foster encouragement and fellowship. We can establish essential services, including support groups, counseling, and mental health-informed medical care, to support their journey to healing.</p>
<p>This is a time for our leaders — both military and civilian — to step up and speak openly about the mental health situation affecting our veterans and military families. Their actions and policies set the tone for whether mental health is seen as a weakness or a priority. We need to make it a priority.</p>
<p>Together, let’s strive to serve our veterans and their families through initiatives like #988, volunteering, and raising awareness. Together, 22-a-day may become a thing of the past, and our soldiers and their families can find hope for the future.</p>
