A number of American cruise passengers who may have been exposed to hantavirus are being monitored at home after returning from the Dutch ship M.V. Hondius.
<a href="https://nypost.com/2026/05/07/us-news/americans-on-hantavirus-plagued-cruise-ship-return-home-to-three-states/">The passengers</a> — two in Texas, two in Georgia, one in Virginia, one in Arizona, and one in California — disembarked on the remote South Atlantic island of Saint Helena and are all reported to be in good health. They are still being monitored by health officials in their respective states, as life-threatening symptoms can still develop weeks after the initial exposure. None of the passengers were aware when they left the cruise ship that they might have been exposed.
Oceanwide Expeditions, the company that operates the Dutch cruise ship, released a statement on Thursday: &#8220;These disembarked guests have all been contacted by Oceanwide Expeditions. We are working to establish details of all passengers and crew who embarked and disembarked on various stops of M/V Hondius since March 20.&#8221;
<a href="https://www.who.int/emergencies/disease-outbreak-news/item/2026-DON599">Hantavirus</a> is most commonly transmitted through contact with rodent droppings, but the Andes virus — which primarily attacks the respiratory system and can carry a mortality rate of up to 50% — can be transmitted from person to person. The Andes virus, according to the World Health Organization, is responsible for the Hondius outbreak. Other strains of hantavirus can cause what&#8217;s known as Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), a condition that can cause the kidneys to shut down.
The ship has been stranded for several days — with travelers trapped on board — as officials determine when and where passengers will be permitted to disembark. The next destination is likely to be Spain&#8217;s Canary Islands.
Since the outbreak began, seven cases have been identified — two through lab testing and five through medical evaluation. According to the WHO, three of those patients have died and one still remains critical — and three more have had only mild symptoms of infection.

A major medical association said Tuesday that it does not support transgender surgeries on those under the age of 19, drawing praise from the Trump administration.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) <a href="https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/health-policy/positions/2026-gender-surgery-children-adolescents.pdf">released</a> a position statement saying that the available evidence did not support genital procedures or removing the breasts of young girls who identify as boys. The society also said there was “insufficient” support for placing kids on puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.
“In light of recent publications reporting very low/low certainty of evidence regarding mental health outcomes, along with emerging concerns about potential long-term harms and the irreversible nature of surgical interventions in a developmentally vulnerable population, ASPS concludes there is insufficient evidence demonstrating a favorable risk-benefit ratio for the pathway of gender-related endocrine and surgical interventions in children and adolescents,” the society said in its position statement. “ASPS recommends that surgeons delay gender-related breast/chest, genital, and facial surgery until a patient is at least 19 years old.”
The position statement, in part, cited a review from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which found there was no support for transgender procedures on minors.
“These reviews have not resolved earlier uncertainties regarding treatment benefit; in some areas they have contributed to a clearer understanding of potential harms, while also highlighting limitations of the available evidence, including gaps in documenting long-term physical, psychological, and psychosocial outcomes,” the position statement said.
The Trump administration has fought hard to shield kids from transgender procedures and has looked to cut off all government funding for hospitals that perform the procedures.
“We commend the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for standing up to the overmedicalization lobby and defending sound science,” HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said. “By taking this stand, they are helping protect future generations of American children from irreversible harm.”
Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, the chair of Do No Harm, praised the society for its statement, saying that it was the first major medical society to disavow the procedures for kids.
“High praise to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for taking an important step toward ending the unscientific and harmful practice of sex-rejecting procedures on minors,” he said. “The ASPS’s thoughtful, scientific, and well-reasoned statement today is a model for other medical organizations—namely the Endocrine Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and others—to follow and disavow their previous support for experimental and unscientific interventions. This fight is not over, and we will continue to protect American children by exposing any organization that spreads gender lies.”
Over two dozen states have passed laws protecting kids from transgender surgeries and life-altering cross-sex hormones. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons said it believes that “the regulation of medical care is best achieved through professional self-regulation, rather than criminal law or punitive legislative approaches.”

NASA is cutting short the Crew-11 mission aboard the International Space Station due to a crewmember&#8217;s medical issue, and canceling the first spacewalk of the year that was originally planned for Thursday.
“I have come to the decision that it&#8217;s in the best interest of our astronauts to return Crew-11 ahead of their planned departure,” NASA administrator Jared Isaacman said Thursday in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffcV3jCwwPk">press conference</a>, adding that their return would take place “in the coming days.”
The space agency released no further details on the name of the crewmember or of the medical situation, but reiterated that the astronaut is now fully stable.
Dr. James Polk, NASA’s chief health and medical officer, said, “It’s not an emergency evacuation, but we are erring on the side of caution for the crew member.”
The spacewalk was to be performed by American astronauts Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, who would exit the orbiting lab for almost 7 hours and &#8220;finish preparing a power channel where a new solar array is set to be installed on the ISS,&#8221; according to <a href="https://www.livescience.com/space/space-exploration/nasa-cancels-spacewalk-and-considers-early-crew-return-from-iss-due-to-medical-issues">Live Science</a>. It would have been Cardman&#8217;s first spacewalk, and Fincke&#8217;s ninth.
The other two astronauts were Japan’s Kimiya Yui and Russia’s Oleg Platonov.
The American-Japanese-Russian crew first arrived on the ISS in August 2025 and was scheduled for at least a sixth-month stay. The group was then supposed to be replaced with Crew-12 in mid-February, but this is now up in the air due to the early departure. Isaacman said they may &#8220;potentially pull [the crew] forward.&#8221;
&#8220;It is unclear what returning Crew-11 home early would mean for the ISS, as such changes to the usual rotation are highly unusual,&#8221; Live Science reported.
There are also three other astronauts currently living on the space station who launched from a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in November and are due back to Earth in the summer.

Multiple California-based healthcare workers lost their jobs after they were seen in a TikTok video mocking patients in medical exam rooms.
The incident occurred at Sutter Health’s Pesetas Urgent Care facility in Santa Barbara. The video went viral over Labor Day weekend and has since been taken down. 
In the clip shared by the handle @angieuncut, a group of workers asks via caption, “Are patients allowed to leave you guys gifts?” The following images show exam chair papers stained with bodily fluids left by patients, along with the responses, “Yes!” and “We love them so much.” 
“All shapes and sizes,” another caption reads alongside a photo of a different employee sticking out her tongue while bending over a large stain.
The employees posed around the soiled exam chairs, smiling and giving thumbs-up signs. “Guess the substance,” the original video caption said.

“We are deeply concerned about a disrespectful social media post made on a personal account by a former employee, and we are conducting a full review in line with our policies,” a Sutter Health spokesperson told <a href="https://ktla.com/news/local-news/santa-barbara-clinic-staff-tiktok-bodily-fluids/">KTLA</a>. The company also stated that the employee who posted the video had not worked at the healthcare facility for two months.
In a later statement, Sutter Health confirmed that the individuals involved had been terminated.
“Sutter Health has terminated the employees responsible for the inappropriate and insensitive photos posted on social media,” a spokesperson said in a statement, per <a href="https://people.com/clinic-workers-fired-for-outright-violation-of-policy-after-posting-photos-mocking-patients-pap-smear-discharge-11803181">People</a>.
“This unacceptable behavior is an outright violation of our policies, shows a lack of respect for our patients and will not be tolerated,” it said. “Protecting the trust of those we serve is our highest priority and when that trust is violated, we take swift action to address it.”

A 16-year-old girl won in court on Tuesday after the public school system in New York denied her medical vaccine exemption.
A federal court sided with a girl, who is named only by the pseudonym <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-york-school-bans-student-for-following-doctors-vaccine-advice-now-shes-fighting-back">Sarah Doe</a>, after the public school system in New York repeatedly denied her a medical exemption, which she received from six different doctors and a nurse practitioner. 
The court granted her medical exemption and said Sarah must be allowed to attend school, starting in September.
“I’m just happy to go to school and be given this opportunity,” Sarah said following the win. “Thank you everyone for coming, I appreciate all the support – it feels unreal.”

New York is one of five states in the U.S. that do not allow religious exemptions for its vaccine mandates. The other states are California, Connecticut, Maine, and West Virginia — though West Virginia&#8217;s governor authorized religious and personal belief exemptions via executive action in 2025, effectively removing it from this list.
Since these remaining states have cracked down on religious exemptions, there have been an increasing number of reports of families saying they&#8217;ve been denied medical exemptions, too. In Sarah&#8217;s case, the court said the school was wrong, and the teen&#8217;s medical exemption is valid.
Sarah, who spoke to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-york-school-bans-student-for-following-doctors-vaccine-advice-now-shes-fighting-back">The Daily Wire</a> back in May about her lawsuit, was advised by a number of medical professionals to skip her final dose of the Hepatitis B vaccination. This was after she developed severe autoimmune conditions, kidney issues, debilitating migraines, continuous rashes, and a diagnosis of a bleeding disorder where blood does not clot properly. All of the conditions started back in 2019, when New York stopped allowing religious exemptions, and Sarah got 18 vaccine doses over the span of two months so she could attend school.

“Her back started hurting her, her whole spine,” Jane Doe, Sarah’s mother, told The Daily Wire. “We went for MRIs, she did cat scans – that’s where our life started with the doctors, all of a sudden the new norm was seeing doctors.” 
“At one point, she did become septic, they had to put a stent in her to her kidney through her urethra and she was in the hospital, we had to pack her in ice one night because her temps just wouldn’t come down,” Jane continued. “It’s just her body responding to all those vaccines at once that just shut her down almost.”
Jane felt very strongly that she couldn’t give the last dose of the vaccine to her daughter and said she had no choice but to take legal action. In April, the family filed suit. 
The family’s attorney, Sujata Gibson, said this case was about Sarah and her safety, but also about other children in states like New York that don’t allow religious exemptions. Further, while New York is supposed to allow medical exemptions, Gibson said that’s not what’s happening.
“The problem really is these New York State Department of Health regulations that were issued in 2019, that led to hundreds of children who had longstanding medical exemptions suddenly getting them revoked,” Gibson told The Daily Wire. “Many, many families have had to move out of town, get vaccinated against medical advice — some children have been severely harmed by that.”
Gibson said there’s legislation pending in New York that could fix this issue, called the <a href="https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2025/S686#:~:text=2025%2DS686%20(ACTIVE)%20%2D%20Summary,accept%20a%20medical%20immunization%20exemption.">Education for All Act</a>. This would “reiterate the state’s existing law that says school districts aren’t allowed to overrule treating physicians,” the attorney said.
Gibson also floated the idea that the federal government could take action to remedy the problem. “If the state won’t fix this, we are just hoping that the federal government will intervene,” she said. “There are a lot of things the federal government could do. This is a square violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Children with disabilities are required to be accommodated and allowed to attend school. And what these school districts are doing is flat-out discriminatory and dangerous to their health.”
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. personally supports exemptions and actually <a href="https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/central-ny/news/2019/07/10/rfk-jr--and-sussman-file-lawsuit-challenging-end-to-religious-exemption-for-vaccinations?utm_source=chatgpt.com">filed suit in 2019</a> to challenge New York’s decision to rid religious exemptions. A child born in Iowa is celebrating his first birthday and was declared the youngest premature baby ever by Guinness World Records. 
Nash Keen weighed just 10 ounces, about the same as a bar of soap, when he entered the world at 21 weeks of gestation on July 5, 2024. The formerly tiny newborn, nicknamed “Nash Potato,” is now thriving and hitting milestones after spending six months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital, per the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/premature-birth-guinness-world-record-22d4092b92af131a3efeea96aeb120e3">Associated Press</a>. 
“Nash is so full of personality,” his mom Mollie Keen told the outlet. “He’s a happy baby.” 
“Being in the NICU as long as he was, you’d think that he would be, you know, more fragile and stuff,” she added. “And he’s not. He’s a very determined, curious little boy, and he’s just all smiles all the time.”
Upon reaching his first birthday, Guinness World Records declared Nash the world’s most premature baby, beating out the organization’s previous record holder, born in 2020 in Alabama, by a single day.

Guinness World Records named Nash the world’s most premature baby after he reached his first birthday. The previous record holder was born in Alabama and was older than Nash by just one day.

Mollie reportedly said that she had a previous miscarriage and was concerned she would also lose Nash when she went into preterm labor. However, she and her husband, Randall, discovered that the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital was capable of caring for extremely premature babies.
“One of the things I noticed about the medical team is that they were very calm,” she told AP of the staff there. “You never really saw them, like, get anxious or anything. And so we kind of just learned to, like, watch them. If the doctors and the nurses weren’t freaking out, there was no reason for us to freak out.”
“We wanted to give Nash a chance,” Molly told Guinness World Records during an interview.
Despite being born so early and therefore being at risk for a slew of medical complications, Nash is developing in what his doctor says is the best outcome possible for him.
Although he is still on oxygen and using a feeding tube, his parents plan to introduce solid food soon. He is rolling over, and they hope he’ll crawl soon, too. 
“He’s truly the best thing to ever happen to us,” Mollie said.
The Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion organization, “<a href="https://www.guttmacher.org/node/26263/printable/print">updated</a>” its definition of viability in August 2022, stating, “A fetus generally reaches viability between 24 and 28 weeks LMP (gestational age).”
This definition is out of date, considering the increasing number of cases like Nash’s, where very premature newborns survive and thrive. These kinds of cases prove that viability is not a fixed gestational point in time, and more broadly, does not determine the humanity of an unborn baby.

It is a testament to the rampant wildfire that is political correctness: &#8220;International Non-Binary People&#8217;s Day.&#8221; Yes, that is a thing. Since 2012, this day lands on the “PC calendar” as July 14th. 
As a medical professional, I must point out an obvious, if inconvenient, conflict: Human beings are sexually dimorphic — biologically male or female — with rare genetic or anatomic conditions being an exception (e.g., <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/swyer-syndrome">Swyer Syndrome</a>,<a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/22199-androgen-insensitivity-syndrome"> Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome</a>). By elevating subjective feelings on gender above objective sex differences, this day reflects the broader cultural shift that values political correctness over biological facts.
Plus, through this PC lens, girls who are gender-nonconforming are encouraged to identify as non-binary or male; they are told that their personality is incompatible with being female. That is wrong. In an attempt to expand &#8220;inclusion,&#8221; we are slowly erasing womanhood. This is evident most in the propagation of gender-neutral language that has gotten out of hand. 
As a board-certified OB/GYN physician, I am, by definition, a women’s healthcare specialist. Read that again, slowly: women’s healthcare specialist. 
More importantly, I am the father of two intelligent, compassionate, and talented young women. Notice I didn’t say “menstruating people,” “people with a uterus,” or any other fashionable euphemisms. 
And in that pursuit, medicine — the field entrusted with science, truth, and care — is making a critical, potentially devastating mistake: erasing women. 
Gender-neutral language has become trendy in media, education, public policy, and now in medicine. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (<a href="https://www.acog.org/clinical-information/policy-and-position-statements/statements-of-policy/2022/inclusive-language%20Inclusive%20Language%20%7C%20ACOG">ACOG</a>), for example, states it “will move beyond the exclusive use of gendered language and definitions.” The American Society of Reproductive Medicine (<a href="https://www.asrm.org/practice-guidance/practice-committee-documents/inclusive-language-and-environment-to-welcome-lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender-queer-questioning-intersex-and-asexual-patients/">ASRM</a>) offers similar guidance.
Ironically, when language avoids or replaces the word “woman,” especially in contexts centered on women’s lived experiences — pregnancy, motherhood, menstruation — it ceases to be inclusive. It becomes erasure.
This is biologically inaccurate, linguistically confusing, and ethically wrong. It must stop.
Terms like “pregnant people,”  “birthing people”, “menstruators,” and “chestfeeders” are billed as inclusive. But they send a quieter, more harmful message: that “woman” is a word too controversial or exclusive to use.
This reframes womanhood as something to dilute in order to accommodate others — when in reality, specificity and inclusion are not mutually exclusive.
This matters not just symbolically, but materially. Women’s health has long been under-researched and underfunded. When language becomes so neutral that it no longer identifies women as the primary subjects of reproductive care, advocacy efforts lose their power.
If it&#8217;s now politically incorrect to say “maternal mortality disproportionately affects Black women,” and we must instead say “birthing people,” we obscure the social and biological realities that demand urgent attention. Precision in language is not exclusion. It is clarity.
Ironically, this expansion of gender-neutral language is profoundly anti-woman. A movement that can’t say the word “woman” cannot fully fight for women. 
Think this is just one disgruntled OB/GYN’s opinion? Think again. 
<a href="https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/j-k-rowling-writes-about-her-reasons-for-speaking-out-on-sex-and-gender-issues/">J.K. Rowling</a> — a woman and lifelong advocate for women’s rights — was globally vilified for opposing terms like “people who menstruate.” 
And just this month (June 2025), a peer-reviewed paper in Sexual and Reproductive Health warned that “desexed” language is confusing, alienating, and potentially harmful — even to the very populations it intends to help. As those authors write:
<blockquote>Desexed language is likely to have an adverse impact on people with low health literacy and language skills, risk alienation, and cause confusion… It may even cause harm to transgender and gender-diverse people who also need clear health communications.</blockquote>
Similar sentiment has been stated by <a href="https://www.ohchr.org/en/special-procedures/sr-violence-against-women">Reem Alsalem</a>, a Jordanian independent consultant and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls. Alsalem stated:
<blockquote>Erasing women and women-specific language and needs based on their sex is not only wrong, but also demeaning, regressive and constitutes one of the worst forms of violence that women and girls can experience.</blockquote>
Even the <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/defending-women-from-gender-ideology-extremism-and-restoring-biological-truth-to-the-federal-government/%20Defending%20Women%20From%20Gender%20Ideology%20Extremism%20And%20Restoring%20Biological%20Truth%20To%20The%20Federal%20Government%20%E2%80%93%20The%20White%20House">U.S. government</a> recently declared: “It is the policy of the United States to use clear and accurate language that recognizes women are biologically female and men are biologically male.”
Similarly, my home state of Texas recently <a href="https://txvalues.org/breaking-texas-senate-passes-womens-bill-of-rights/">passed legislation</a> that defines man and woman based on biological reality. This is not “anti-trans.” It is pro-woman. Pro-girl. Pro-truth.
Yes, there is fresh momentum on protecting women and women’s rights. This is good news. On July 1, 2025, for example, the <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/lgbtq/5380157-penn-trans-women-sports-upenn-trump-mcmahon-lia-thomas-ncaa-title-ix/">University of Pennsylvania</a> — which was found in violation of Title IX regulations — agreed to restrict trans athletes from participating in women’s sports. That is a win for women’s sports everywhere.
In the effort to include everyone, let’s not lose sight of the people who fought longest and hardest to be heard: women.
Say the word. Use the word. Because avoiding it doesn’t create justice — it creates silence. And silence has never been a friend to women.

After decades of investing in life science breakthroughs, from biotech platforms to diagnostic innovations, I’ve seen what’s possible when bold ideas meet real backing. I’ve also seen what happens when bureaucracy gets in the way. Nearly $52 billion flows through the National Institutes of Health each year — taxpayer money entrusted to one of the world’s most important engines of biomedical progress. It begs a tough question: Is the NIH delivering what it promises? In my opinion, not yet.
Discovery today moves faster than ever, but the NIH struggles to keep pace — not from lack of talent or mission, but because of outdated systems, fragmented structure, and a risk-averse culture. This isn’t a partisan issue. It’s not about dismantling anything. It’s about upgrading an essential institution to work the way science works: fast, open, collaborative, and accountable. Under Dr. Jay Bhattacharya’s leadership, with his courage and clear-eyed vision, we’re closer than ever to meaningful reform.
The NIH’s 27 institutes and centers often function in isolation, duplicating work and missing chances to collaborate. In 2024, $9 billion went to indirect costs like admin overhead — paperwork, not pipettes or Petri dishes. Rep. Cathy McMorris proposed streamlining to 15 centers, a plan that ought to be seriously considered. Merging overlapping fields, say, translational medicine and biomedical imaging, would sharpen focus and accelerate progress. It would help the NIH act like a modern, integrated organization, not a loose confederation of silos. Let scientists spend their time in the lab, not in grant-cycle purgatory.

Public funding comes with public accountability, and the NIH has work to do. Concerns over inadequate responses to research misconduct, opaque grant reviews, and questionable international ties — like those linked to risky pathogen studies — damage credibility and slow progress. What’s needed isn’t punishment but clarity. Reforms to tighten oversight, simplify peer review, and flag repeat issues will protect the science and the people behind it. The American public is generous in funding medical research. It’s time to be just as generous with the truth.
In my years as a venture capitalist, I’ve learned that real innovation comes from unexpected places — outsiders, first-time founders, scientists chasing questions no one else asks. But the NIH’s grant system favors the safe route, funding incremental research while visionary proposals, like a novel approach to Alzheimer’s, get passed over. Put more generalists and cross-disciplinary thinkers on peer review panels. Train reviewers to recognize high-risk/high-reward ideas. Carve out funding for newcomers applying for the first time. We can’t solve 21st-century problems if we’re afraid to back 21st-century thinkers.
The scientific landscape has changed — AI decodes protein structures, organ-on-chip tech replaces animal testing, wearables guide patient care. Yet the NIH uses tools and timelines built for another era. The new public access policy, requiring funded studies to be shared freely, is a good start. But modernizing how we evaluate, fund, and share research is overdue. AI-driven grant reviews and real-time data platforms could match the global pace of discovery. If we want to compete with China and Europe, we need to move faster.
Despite its massive budget, the NIH sends disproportionate funding to elite institutions. In 2023, half of all grants went to just 10 states. Great science can come from a fresh PhD in Idaho or a tenured lab in Iowa, but without grant caps, geographic diversity, and fair review standards, those ideas never get a shot. America doesn’t have a monopoly on good ideas. Let’s stop acting like it does.
Are all reform proposals perfect? No. They’ll need input from scientists, policymakers, and patients who count on the results. Ignoring the problem, though, is reckless. This isn’t about tearing down the NIH; it’s about retooling it for today’s challenges. I came to this country believing in what it stood for. I’ve backed companies that pushed the limits of healthcare. I believe American science is the best in the world, but it needs a system that doesn’t hold it back. Let’s build an NIH that earns trust, funds bold ideas, and turns the best thinking into real-world cures. It’s time we let science lead.

Detransitioner Claire Abernathy hadn’t even made it to high school yet when her doctors encouraged her to undergo a double mastectomy. Despite <a href="https://www.iwf.org/2025/04/28/new-identity-crisis-documentary-mother-and-daughter-expose-medical-industrys-transgender-manipulation-and-lies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">her concerns</a> about the procedure, her mother, Carrie, was told that affirming Claire’s gender identity was the only way to prevent her from killing herself.
Now, years later, both mother and daughter <a href="https://www.iwf.org/2025/04/28/new-identity-crisis-documentary-mother-and-daughter-expose-medical-industrys-transgender-manipulation-and-lies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opened up</a> to IW Features about how the medical system manipulated them into making permanent and irreversible decisions — the consequences of which they are still grappling with today.
The worst part? They’re not alone.
The Abernathy family is part of a growing segment of our population coming to terms with the damage done by gender ideologues. Hopefully, they will serve as inspiration for other families fighting not just gender confusion, but a manipulative industry that turns this confusion into profit.
The adolescent brain is a work in progress. We all know this to be true — after all, why else would we restrict young men and women from getting a tattoo until they’ve turned 18 or from purchasing alcohol until they’ve turned 21? It doesn’t matter how much a kid feels like an “old soul.” A young person’s prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for decision-making and impulse control, continues to <a href="https://hillcrestatc.com/teen-brain-development/">mature</a> well into their mid-20s.
Because teens go through this lengthy, often angsty developmental stage, they’re that much more susceptible to risk-taking behaviors and less capable of fully understanding long-term consequences. This is why <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/drunk-driving" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one in five</a> teen drivers involved in a fatal crash had some alcohol in their system — because teens are more likely to underestimate the effects of alcohol on their bodies and overestimate their ability to drive inebriated. Similarly, <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1016/j.soscij.2016.08.004" target="_blank" rel="noopener">studies</a> show that as many as one-third of tattooed adolescents regret inking up their bodies. And unsurprisingly, <a href="https://www.mdedge.com/psychiatry/article/98697/dermatology/teenage-tattoos-are-most-often-regretted" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research</a> indicates that the younger a teen is when they get a tattoo, the more likely they are to regret it later.
So why aren’t America’s trusted, highly esteemed medical professionals drawing the same conclusions about so-called “gender-affirming” procedures? While comprehensive data on regret following medical interventions in gender-confused minors is still emerging, stories like Claire’s are proof that medicalization can and does have victims. At least if you cop some bad ink, you might be able to get it <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/snl-pete-davidson-spending-six-figures-remove-all-tattoos" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lasered off</a> later. But the permanence of gender-affirming procedures adds a sickening layer of complexity and potential for regret.
Teens might swear up and down they know what they want with their lives, like an unattainable dream job or goals to jet-set around the world childless and unbothered. But I’m willing to bet that teens can, and often will, change their minds. I know I did. If you asked 16-year-old Andrea if she wanted to get married and have children, she would have laughed in your face. And, if you asked her if she felt comfortable in her female body, she probably would have similarly scoffed.
Puberty is a really rough time for any young person. That’s not only something Claire expressed to me during her interview, but it’s a reality I have lived myself. I can recall the first conscious moment I felt insecure about my body: I was in elementary school, watching a movie starring young Lindsay Lohan, and I saw how her thighs didn’t touch when she sat down on a car seat.
<a href="https://depts.washington.edu/thmedia/view.cgi?page=fastfacts&amp;section=bodyimage">Studies</a> show that as many as 40% of nine and 10-year-old girls are already trying to lose weight, and as many as 70% of normal-weight teen girls <a href="https://archive.nytimes.com/well.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/23/many-normal-weight-teens-feel-fat/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">think</a> they’re overweight. Should parents of young girls who wrongfully believe they are fat indulge their child’s delusions and allow her to diet, or worse, get liposuction? If that sounds ridiculous, that’s because it is.
Yet, that’s exactly what the medical and entertainment industries are telling parents of gender-confused children that they must do.

In my home state of California, $28,890,512 has been spent on youth “transgender” medical interventions, according to <a href="https://stoptheharmdatabase.com/state/california/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">StopTheHarm</a>. Ethically speaking, plastic surgeons are supposed to assess the physical and emotional maturity of teen patients before they go under the knife for cosmetic procedures. So why does nearly every story of detransition reveal that medical professionals rarely, if ever, address underlying psychological issues — Borderline Personality Disorder, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, etc. — in gender-confused youth ? And why is it that the only solution offered by most medical professionals is for these youth to have their healthy body parts modified?
And what can parents realistically do? Carrie’s experience reminds me of the old adage: Mother knows best. She knew something was off when the medical professionals rushed to transition her daughter, but was guilt-tripped and persuaded into proceeding with medicalization.
Looking back, Carrie said she realizes she should have trusted her parental intuition. Parents are often the first line of defense in protecting their child’s well-being. They should feel empowered to trust those instincts, especially when it comes to irreversible medical decisions. Carrie said it best when speaking with me: “You are the expert on your own child.”
Indeed, the Abernathy story is a timely reminder of the very real consequences of sidelining parental concerns and the dire importance of scrutinizing medical practices that clearly prioritize profit and ideology over patient well-being.

‘I Feel Robbed’: After A Double Mastectomy At 14, This Detransitioner Is Speaking Out

A woman who has served as the managing director for a radical transgender activist organization handles the same role for over two dozen mainstream major medical organizations, a watchdog group revealed Wednesday. 
Sue O’Sullivan of Veritas Association Management is the managing director of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and 26 other medical organizations across the United States, according to tax documents reviewed by the American Accountability Foundation. WPATH is a radical organization that has pushed for transgender medical procedures on children, including the removal of breasts for girls who identify as boys, and opposed laws to protect kids from such procedures. 
O’Sullivan is the <a href="https://veritasamc.com/team/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">co-founder</a> and president of Veritas Association Management, an Illinois-based professional services company that manages operations for dozens of mainstream medical organizations like the American Pediatric Surgical Association and the American Society of Andrology. 
<a href="https://americanaccountabilityfoundation.com/news/">The American Accountability Foundation</a> told The Daily Wire that the ties between O’Sullivan and WPATH could jeopardize the medical integrity of other organizations managed by Veritas Association Management. In total, the watchdog group identified 51 medical organizations or symposia that have some ties to Veritas.  
“Veritas Association Management’s entanglement with WPATH represents a serious reputational and ethical concern for organizations that engage its services. The medical association community should scrutinize Veritas’ role in legitimizing WPATH’s radical practices and consider the consequences of these relationships,” the American Accountability Foundation said in a report shared with The Daily Wire on its findings. 
The ties between WPATH and Veritas are well-established on both social media and the association management company’s website. 
For example, a Facebook post shows O’Sullivan and a team from Veritas attending WPATH’s October 2024 symposium in Portugal. 
“The 2024 World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) 28th Scientific Symposium, held in beautiful Lisbon, Portugal, was an amazing event!” the company <a href="https://www.facebook.com/amcveritas/posts/pfbid02jyN9CGXd4fkPHZPE6aeYujR5F9pwa1vnF1NtbQjeNMs5JxQVfjLFLW8HiKHuvvwEl">posted</a>. “Proudly managed by Veritas since 2014, WPATH promotes evidence-based transgender health care, education, research, and public policy, plus justice and equality for people of all gender identities and gender expressions.”

Veritas’ <a href="https://veritasamc.com/clients/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">client lists</a> include both WPATH and the United States Professional Association for Transgender Health, a regional affiliate of WPATH. Veritas is also currently <a href="https://veritasamc.com/careers/wpath-executive-director/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advertising</a> for an executive director role for WPATH, whose duties include “leveraging Veritas resources to plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the staff and administrative activities” and “advancing transgender health equity.” The position is listed as being based in East Dundee, Illinois, where Veritas Association Management is located. 
WPATH has opposed Republican-backed laws shielding kids from irreversible transgender medical procedures and put out a <a href="https://wpath.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/01.28.25-WPATH-Board-Statement-Regarding-Executive-Order.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> attacking President Donald Trump for his executive order directing all funding be cut off for entities that promote transgenderism for kids. 
O’Sullivan is listed on <a href="https://wpath.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/FINAL-Joint-WPATH-USPATH-Statement-On-Resumption-of-Medically-Necessary-Surgeries-During-COVID.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multiple</a> WPATH documents pushing transgender procedures, including <a href="https://app.wpath.org/media/cms/Documents/Public%20Policies/2021/Joint%20WPATH%20USPATH%20Letter%20Dated%20Oct%2012%202021.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">putting</a> children on puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones. 
Tax documents analyzed by the American Accountability Foundation show that O’Sullivan spends eight times as much time working for WPATH than the other medical associations she manages or directs.  
WPATH’s IRS <a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/942675140/202413039349301991/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">form 990</a> for the fiscal year ending December 2023 shows that O’Sullivan is the organization’s managing director and reports spending eight hours per week in that role, which is more than the four weekly hours reported by WPATH President Marci Bowers. She only spends one hour a week for each of the other 26 medical organizations where she serves as either the managing or executive director, according to an analysis of tax documents by the American Accountability Foundation.
For example, O’Sullivan only reports working one hour per week for organizations like the <a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/237097289/202432409349301603/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Pediatric Surgical Association</a> or the <a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/383845227/202423209349325737/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Society of Ob Gyn Hospitalists</a> where she is listed as the managing director.

“As many of the organizations that contract with Veritas operate on relatively lean budgets with no (or few) in-house staff, Veritas Association Management substantially runs all day-to-day operations for many of these organizations. In fact, many organizations that contract with Veritas disclose in their tax filings that their boards have delegated all management to Veritas,” the American Accountability Foundation reported. 
After reaching out for comment to the Indian American Urological Association, the group told The Daily Wire that it ended its affiliation with Veritas last year.
The same <a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/942675140/202413039349301991/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">form 990</a> reveals that WPATH has handed over many organizational responsibilities to Veritas. Veritas has control of WPATH’s books and records in addition to having responsibility for “management duties.” 
In its report, the American Accountability Foundation identified 10 major medical organizations where O’Sullivan is either the managing director or the executive director who delegates management responsibilities to Veritas.
These groups included the American Association of Clinical Urologists, Society of Abdominal Radiology, Society for Vascular Medicine, Society of Thoracic Radiology, the North American Society for Cardiac Imaging, Society for Basic Urological Research, Ohio Urological Society, Society Of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, the International Skeletal Society, and the American Pediatric Surgical Association Foundation. 
Many of these organizations list their address at the corporate address of Veritas Association Management. 
In its <a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/593243373/202410899349300416/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filing</a>, the American Pediatric Surgical Association Foundation noted that it “delegated control over management duties customarily performed by or under the direct supervision of officers, directors, trustees or key employees to Veritas Association Management, Inc.”
The Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, where O’Sullivan is listed as managing director, paid Veritas $<a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/223293645/202411379349301626/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">358,900</a> in 2023. Other Veritas clients where O’Sullivan is listed as managing or executive director include the American Venous Forum Foundation, which paid Veritas $<a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/363634626/202433209349324968/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">294,600;</a> the Society of OB/GYN Hospitalists, which paid $<a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/383845227/202423209349325737/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">167,200</a>; and the Society for Academic Specialists in General Obstetrics and Gynecology, which paid $<a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/461912833/202431389349301343/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">131,800</a>.
Other groups that Veritas says it is associated with include the Big XII Team Physicians (which a spokesman said is not officially affiliated with the Big XII conference), the Pediatric Pharmacy Association, and the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group.
Apart from WPATH, multiple other groups linked to O’Sullivan and Veritas Association Management have issued statements in support of so-called “gender-affirming care” for children or backing transgender ideology. 
For example, the American Pediatric Pharmacy Association <a href="https://www.ppag.org/?pg=PositionStatements" target="_blank" rel="noopener">endorsed</a> as its own position a <a href="https://publications.aap.org/aapnews/news/25340/AAP-reaffirms-gender-affirming-care-policy?autologincheck=redirected" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> from the American Academy of Pediatricians backing transgender medical procedures on kids. 
The American Pediatric Surgical Association also <a href="https://apsapedsurg.org/apsa-info/about-us/apsa-statements/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">points</a> visitors to its website to a letter from a number of Left-leaning medical organizations decrying proposals during the first Trump administration to define sex as only male and female. 
The American Accountability Foundation believes that these connections may lead to the radical transgender procedures advocated for by WPATH to be normalized in the medical mainstream. 
“Veritas’ client list includes mainstream medical associations, many of which may be unaware of the extent of Veritas’ involvement with WPATH,” the watchdog warned. “By managing these organizations alongside WPATH, Veritas risks mainstreaming and normalizing WPATH’s radical policies within the broader medical community.”
