Patrick Clancy is breaking his silence after a Massachusetts judge declared a mistrial in the triple-murder case against his ex-wife, Lindsay Clancy, who admitted to strangling their three children: 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan.

President Donald Trump on Friday weighed in on the mistrial in the Lindsay Clancy murder case, calling the deaths of her three young children a &#8220;horrible tragedy&#8221; and predicting that she would face another trial.
&#8220;It&#8217;s a shame. It&#8217;s a horrible tragedy,&#8221; Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. &#8220;Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can&#8217;t be worse.&#8221;
Trump said the case, which has captivated the nation, had been difficult to avoid because it received so much television coverage. He said Clancy would face consequences and could end up confined in a psychiatric institution or prison.
&#8220;There&#8217;ll be a price,&#8221; Trump said, adding that he believes prosecutors would bring the case to trial again and called that scenario &#8220;too bad.&#8221;

One of the things that I find very interesting about the Lindsay Clancy case is that it&#8217;s a complex fact pattern.
There&#8217;s a fake thing that happens in psychiatry in which it&#8217;s assumed that people are capable of pure, easy diagnoses and that drugs are extremely effective. Neither one is true. If you spend any time with psychiatrists or with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) — or people who have dealt with psychiatrists, the DSM, or medication — you would know it&#8217;s probably the least-developed area of all medicine.
Psychiatry is incredibly vague. Basically, these things are diagnosed based on checklists and a person&#8217;s self-reported symptoms. And then when it comes to psychiatric drugs, very often it&#8217;s basically trying different combinations. It is virtually that basic: see what works, then adjust medication based on the symptoms.
It&#8217;s really complex. In this particular case, it basically comes down to: Was she psychotic enough not to recognize the difference between right and wrong at the time of the murders? That is the essence of the case. And there’s the fact that Massachusetts law is incredibly biased in favor of the defendant when it comes to the insanity defense.
I know a lot of people are very agitated on the Right, saying, “It’s a clear-cut case; she’s absolutely guilty.” Meanwhile, a lot of people on the Left are agitated, saying, “It&#8217;s a clear-cut case; she’s absolutely innocent.”
I&#8217;m not all that surprised there’s a hung jury, although I&#8217;m surprised it was 11-1 in favor of acquittal. I would have thought it would have been six on one side and six on the other.

The “beyond a reasonable doubt” provision of the law, combined with the insanity defense in Massachusetts, which puts the burden of proof on the prosecution to prove sanity rather than the burden of proof on the defense to prove insanity, makes it a very, very high bar for the prosecution to pass.
This is one of the reasons why I think it&#8217;s such a sin for people to conflate their own personal issues with those of Lindsay Clancy. The reality is that in the United States, every year you have probably 15 multiple homicides of children by women in circumstances similar to Lindsay Clancy’s.
But there are many women claiming they are suffering the same thing Lindsay Clancy supposedly suffered from, which is totally insane and really, really damaging for society at large.
I would say the defense has three basic arguments in favor of the idea that she was truly psychotic at the point at which she committed the murders. The most obvious one, the one that the prosecution had the hardest time with, was the fact that she tried to kill herself. If she just killed the kids and then didn’t try to kill herself, I would have said to give her the death penalty.
Her hearing voices? That is the most difficult part of this case because there&#8217;s literally no way to determine whether that happened, since it&#8217;s purely subjective. She&#8217;s going to say she heard a voice. Everybody else is going to say, “There&#8217;s no way you heard a voice.”
I always thought that was the weakest part of her defense — and also the one her case largely rested on.
And then there was the basic idea that she was worried about the medication interactions. I thought that was pretty weak for the defense: she didn&#8217;t give evidence that she thought she was being poisoned. She worried that the medications were interacting poorly and weren&#8217;t working for her, which is really, really common in psychiatric circles.
But when you put all that together, and then you add that the burden of proof is on the prosecution, I can see how people would arrive at reasonable doubt. It will be interesting to hear from the jurors afterward about how these deliberations actually went.
There&#8217;s something else that is even more disturbing, and that is turning everything into a societal problem. Let&#8217;s say that you are an advocate for Lindsay Clancy. You truly believe she went through a psychotic episode. Why in the world does that implicate all of human society?
Why are you protesting? What are you protesting against? That bewildered me when I first saw these protesters outside the courtroom. Normally, when you have protesters outside a courtroom, they are arguing that a fundamental miscarriage of justice is being done because society is corrupt in some way.
For example, if there&#8217;s a highly polarized racial trial, people show up outside the courtroom to suggest that America&#8217;s racial past is impacting the verdict. In this case, there was no implication that anything remotely like that was happening. It just seemed like a cry against the world that somehow all of society is responsible for Lindsay Clancy&#8217;s psychotic behavior.
The most controversial aspect of the trial is everything that was happening outside the trial. When it comes to the actual people outside who were saying, “It&#8217;s absolutely clear that not only was she innocent, her lawyer is a hero on behalf of women everywhere,” what the hell is that?
You have to tie that into the broader left-wing belief that somehow abortion is a sacrament. Clearly, this crazy behavior comes from the same sort of philosophy that suggests that the only important thing in life is a “woman&#8217;s right to choose.”
This underscores something that pro-life people have been saying for quite a while, which is that there&#8217;s no distinction between the pre-born and the post-born.
The case is horrific enough, but this reaction outside the trial is truly appalling.

The state said in closing arguments that Clancy gave up on trying to get better and decided to kill herself and also decided she was going to take her children with her. They said Clancy made a number of decisions leading up to the murders that show this was planned, like sending her husband Patrick out for two errands and looking up the time it would take for him to retrieve the takeout order.  Clancy wasn&#8217;t suffering psychosis and was aware of her actions and knew right and wrong, the state argued.
The case became a lightening rod across the country, with some women online rallying to support Clancy due to the defense&#8217;s injections of postpartum mental issues. A fundraiser set up for Clancy&#8217;s family brought in <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-for-lindsay-clancys-parents">more than $1 million</a>.
The trial also sparked debate about a culture that consumes tragedy and crime as entertainment. Notably, a healthy number of people online, mostly women, spun up conspiracies completely exonerating Clancy from the crimes, something Clancy never did herself. One conspiracy even claimed Patrick murdered the children and then somehow framed Clancy so well that she believed she had done it.

Reddington then pressed the judge over what he characterized as glossing over reasonable doubt instructions during Thursday’s heated proceedings.
“But just in case the record is clear, I am specifically not glossing over this issue. I have thought about this issue long and hard. I know the defendant objects, but the characterization that I’m glossing over it. Trust me, that’s not the situation,” Sullivan said. &#8220;And I&#8217;ll try and give this with more pizzazz than I gave yesterday, I suppose.&#8221;

“I want to remind you that you are required to follow my instructions on the law as I gave them to you,” Sullivan told the jury. “Proof beyond a reasonable doubt does not mean proof beyond all possible doubt.”
Reddington asked Sullivan to remove the juror accused of disregarding the instructions and replace that juror with an alternate. Sullivan denied the request, saying he could not determine which side of the jury room dispute was correct.
“I don’t feel that it is proper for me to side with one side or the other of the deliberations,” Sullivan said, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/lindsay-clancy-murder-trial-updates-mistrial-hung-jury-deliberations/">according</a> to CBS Boston. “I don’t feel it’s appropriate for me to say I agree with one juror or the 11.”
Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague also opposed removing the juror, arguing that Sullivan had responded appropriately by questioning each member of the panel.
“I think what Your Honor has done by asking each juror if they’re able to follow the law and then giving a general instruction on reasonable doubt is appropriate,” she said.
The dispute is particularly consequential because Massachusetts places an unusual burden on the prosecution when a defendant raises an insanity defense. <a href="https://www.wbur.org/news/2026/09/01/massachusetts-lindsay-clancy-insanity-defense-criminal-liability">Under Massachusetts law</a>, the state must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was sane and criminally responsible at the time of the crime.

The panel of nine women and three men remained deadlocked after more than 35 hours of deliberations.
The surprise note sent the courtroom into a scramble and sparked a heated sidebar involving Sullivan, the defense, and the prosecution. Reporters inside the courthouse described Clancy’s attorney as visibly angry and frustrated.
In an unusual moment, Reddington wheeled Clancy over to the sidebar so she could hear the discussion.
“She has a right to know what’s going on,” Reddington<a href="https://x.com/FoxNews/status/2095615881241846079?s=20"> said</a>. “If it’s not going to be in open court, the judge said I could bring her up so she could hear.”
Sullivan then brought the jurors into the courtroom one by one and asked whether they could follow his instructions. Moments later, he brought the entire jury back into the courtroom and explained the meaning of reasonable doubt before ordering them to return to deliberations.
“I want to remind you that you are required to follow my instructions on the law as I gave them to you,” Sullivan told the jury. “Proof beyond a reasonable doubt does not mean proof beyond all possible doubt.”
Reddington asked Sullivan to remove the juror accused of disregarding the instructions and replace that juror with an alternate. Sullivan denied the request, saying he could not determine which side of the jury room dispute was correct.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t feel that it is proper for me to side with one side or the other of the deliberations,&#8221; Sullivan said, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/lindsay-clancy-murder-trial-updates-mistrial-hung-jury-deliberations/">according</a> to CBS Boston. &#8220;I don&#8217;t feel it&#8217;s appropriate for me to say I agree with one juror or the 11.&#8221;
Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague also opposed removing the juror, arguing that Sullivan had responded appropriately by questioning each member of the panel.
&#8220;I think what Your Honor has done by asking each juror if they&#8217;re able to follow the law and then giving a general instruction on reasonable doubt is appropriate,&#8221; she said.
That dispute is particularly consequential because Massachusetts places an unusual burden on the prosecution when a defendant raises an insanity defense. <a href="https://www.wbur.org/news/2026/09/01/massachusetts-lindsay-clancy-insanity-defense-criminal-liability">Under Massachusetts law</a>, the state must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was sane and criminally responsible at the time of the crime. 
Her defense team argues that postpartum psychosis left her unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions.
It is unclear how the jury is divided or which verdict the 11 jurors have reportedly selected. That information will not be released unless the jury reaches a verdict or the court declares a mistrial. 
Reddington <a href="https://x.com/FoxNews/status/2095624618958631345?s=20">said</a> the foreperson&#8217;s note showed that 11 jurors had reached a decision while one was refusing to apply the reasonable doubt standard.
“A note that the judge already has says there are 11 jurors that have made a decision and one juror will not apply reasonable doubt,” Reddington said.  
Asked about the possibility of a mistrial, Reddington dismissed the idea.
“I don’t want a mistrial. Why would I want a mistrial? I kicked the sh*t out of their case,” he <a href="https://x.com/BrianEntin/status/2095617143869931735?s=20">told</a> reporters.
Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, has admitted to strangling the children with exercise bands in 2023 inside the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts, home. Her defense team argues that the medical system failed her and that postpartum psychosis left her not criminally responsible for her actions.
The jury is weighing several possible outcomes, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, manslaughter, not guilty by reason of insanity, or acquittal. The jury must reach a unanimous verdict. 
If convicted of first-degree murder, Clancy faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. In the event of a mistrial or insanity-based acquittal, Clancy is expected to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/lindsay-clancy-mistrial-what-happens-next-da699b71b3c9136fbb41dc086417ab48">remain</a> in a state-run psychiatric hospital for the foreseeable future. A mistrial would leave the criminal case unresolved and could result in another trial.
Sullivan dismissed the jury for the day Thursday. The jurors are scheduled to return Friday morning, when the extraordinary battle over the lone holdout is expected to resume.

It is the second time in two days that the Massachusetts jury has told the judge it cannot reach a unanimous verdict.
“After much deliberation, we are still unable to come to a unanimous decision,” the jury said in a note to the judge.
In response, Judge William Sullivan read the jury the Tuey-Rodriguez charge, an instruction given to a divided jury. The instruction encourages jurors to continue deliberating, reconsider their positions with an open mind, and make a renewed effort to reach a unanimous verdict.
“The verdict to which a juror agrees must be their own, the result of their own convictions, and not a mere acquiescence in the conclusions of their fellow jurors,” Sullivan said, reading the charge. “Yet, in order to bring 12 minds to a unanimous result, you must examine the questions submitted to you with candor and with proper regard and deference and respect to the opinions of each other.&#8221;
The judge added that the burden of proof remains with the prosecution but stressed that jurors considering acquittal should ask whether any doubt in their own minds is a reasonable one.
“With that, I now ask you to return to your deliberations with these thoughts in mind,” Sullivan said.

A 56-year-old woman who describes herself as a &#8220;<a href="https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/lindsay-clancy-trial-dawn-light-court-arrest-22414113.php">crime junkie</a>&#8221; was arrested on Tuesday after she was caught filming jurors serving on the Lindsay Clancy murder trial.
Jurors reportedly noticed that Dawn Light was taking photos or filming them when they were dismissed for the day on Tuesday, following day four of deliberations. Light, who is apparently of supporter of Clancy&#8217;s, was taken into custody around 3:40 p.m.
Prosecutor Nicole Pearson said Light was inside her car filming jurors, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/lindsay-clancy-murder-trial-day-26">according</a> to Fox News. &#8220;She is filming jurors that are coming out of the building,&#8221; Pearson said. Video recovered by police from her phone&#8217;s deleted folder showed Clancy jurors leaving the building.

Light faces one charge of intimidation of a witness, jurors, or person furnishing information in connection with criminal proceedings. According to her attorney, Light was trying to film Clancy and the matter was &#8220;a complete misunderstanding.&#8221;
According to Fox News reporter Bill Melugin, Light could face up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine since the Clancy case involves a potential life sentence.
Light had pleaded not guilty.

Judge William Sullivan addressed the situation on Wednesday morning. &#8220;I just want to remind everybody here and elsewhere that there&#8217;s been an order that&#8217;s been issued in regards to the conducting of this case, as well as statutes in this Commonwealth which relate to jurors, witnesses, attorneys and others,&#8221; he said.
Hundreds of women have been showing up outside the courthouse for weeks, showing their apparent support for Clancy, a mother who fatally strangled all three of her young children. Her supporters typically wear pink and hold signs of support, some reading, “She Needed Help&#8221; or &#8220;Peace for Lindsay.&#8221;
On August 20, some 400 people, mostly women, showed up wearing pink shirts to show their support for Clancy. The women have dubbed themselves &#8220;Lindsay&#8217;s Army.&#8221;
The case has become a lightning rod online, with influencers and celebrities offering support for Clancy due to the defense&#8217;s injection of alleged postpartum psychosis to explain the crime and argue that Clancy is not criminally liable for her actions. Others online have peddled unsupported conspiracy theories about Clancy being framed by her ex-husband Patrick, who they say murdered the kids and then framed his wife.

A Brazilian illegal immigrant allegedly told a 911 dispatcher that he strangled and &#8220;ended up killing a woman by mistake&#8221; before police found her dead inside her Massachusetts home.
Flavio Alcantara Dias, 43, had his deportation case terminated under the Biden administration and had previous arrests for DUI and aggravated assault, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/suspect-custody-strangling-massachusetts-woman-death-home-brazilian-illegal-immigrant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. He then allegedly went on to kill 33-year-old Brianna Connolly in her home in Framingham, Massachusetts, last Thursday.
Dias originally snuck across the border in 2019 before an immigration judge granted the illegal immigrant&#8217;s motion to terminate his proceedings in 2024, according to Fox News.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has since lodged a detainer asking local authorities to transfer Dias to federal custody if he&#8217;s released.
&#8220;The safest way to arrest and remove criminal illegal aliens from our streets is by lodging arrest detainers. Seven of the top 10 safest cities in the United States cooperate with ICE. We are urging the Framingham Police Department to participate in a controlled transfer of this criminal illegal alien to get him out of our communities once and for all,&#8221; the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.
&#8220;Our message is clear: if you come into our country illegally and break our laws, we will find you, we will arrest you, and we will deport you,&#8221; the department added.
Dias faces charges of assault and battery causing serious bodily harm and possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card.
Dias called 911, saying he killed the victim by mistake and strangled her, Boston 25 <a href="https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/man-held-without-bail-after-woman-found-dead-framingham/UUMNFS2AFNHV7HKX4VDPQLAO6M/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
&#8220;He states very clearly, &#8216;Can I have police? A homicide just happened here right now,'&#8221; Middlesex County Assistant District Attorney Thomas Brandt recalled.
&#8220;He then states, &#8216;I ended up killing a woman by mistake.&#8217; He says, &#8216;I went crazy and suffocated her later on,&#8217; says that he strangled her,&#8221; he said.
Dias then stated that he was at the victim&#8217;s home and that they were doing drugs, according to Boston 25. He then claimed that they got into an argument because he wanted to have sex but she didn&#8217;t.
The accused killer said he fell asleep and saw the victim wasn&#8217;t breathing when he awoke, the local news outlet reported. He called the police and waited outside for them to arrive.
First responders pronounced Connolly dead at the scene.
&#8220;The police then make observations, and the observations that the police make at that point are entirely consistent with the account and description that the defendant has given,&#8221; Brandt said.
&#8220;They observed that she’s got blood marks on her forehead and also on the back of her head … they also observe a small cord or fabric-y cord around her neck,&#8221; Brandt said.
Dias is being held without bail, according to Boston 25.

Several women featured in a video by conservative reporter Kaitlin Bennett defended Lindsay Clancy — the Massachusetts mother on trial for killing her three young children — with some saying they had followed the case on the social media platform TikTok.
Clancy, 36, does not dispute that she strangled 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan with exercise bands inside the family’s Duxbury home in January 2023. She has pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, as her defense team is arguing that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
One woman told Bennett that she did not believe Clancy killed her children, despite the fact that both sides in the trial agree that she did.
Another woman, who was pushing a stroller, said she wasn&#8217;t sure what to think but pointed to sleep deprivation and Clancy&#8217;s former job as a labor-and-delivery nurse.
&#8220;Yes, we feel she&#8217;s very sleep-deprived,&#8221; the woman said. &#8220;Her job as a labor and delivery nurse, working night shifts, and three children is a lot.&#8221;
Clancy was on maternity leave after giving birth to Callan, who was eight months old when she killed him. She ultimately decided not to return to work.
Another woman told Bennett that she had children and did not rule out hurting them.
&#8220;Would you ever hurt them?&#8221; Bennett asked.
&#8220;Yes and no,&#8221; the woman replied. &#8220;As a mom or as a dad, I think that you are not perfect.&#8221;
Asked what consequences Clancy should face, one woman said Clancy is &#8220;already in a wheelchair,&#8221; suggesting that this should be punishment enough.
Another said Clancy&#8217;s husband, Patrick Clancy, &#8220;should go to jail for negligence,&#8221; adding, &#8220;he needs to take care of his kids, and that was his responsibility.&#8221;
At least three women said they get their news on the trial from TikTok, where there have been countless conspiracies circulating, including claims that Patrick killed the kids and then framed Clancy.
Clancy has received a number of messages of support online, particularly from women who argue the healthcare system failed to recognize and properly treat her deteriorating mental condition.
Hundreds of supporters, many of them women dressed in pink, gathered outside the Plymouth County courthouse last month to express solidarity with Clancy.
A separate GoFundMe campaign for Clancy&#8217;s parents has raised more than $1 million.
The jury completed its fourth day of deliberations Tuesday without reaching a verdict. Jurors sent Judge William Sullivan a note saying they had been unable to reach a unanimous decision despite hours of discussion, but Sullivan instructed them to continue deliberating.
They are expected to continue deliberations on Wednesday.
