Every candidate for Democratic National Committee chair agreed on Thursday that &#8220;racism and misogyny played a role&#8221; in former Vice President Kamala Harris&#8217; election defeat.
Eight DNC chair candidates, including former presidential candidate Marianne Williamson and former Social Security Administration Commissioner Martin O&#8217;Malley, were part of an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYGNpj0qqow" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MSNBC forum</a> at Georgetown University, where they answered various questions from network hosts Jen Psaki, Symone Sanders, and Jonathan Capehart. After a question from Capehart for all the candidates, each agreed that Harris lost to President Donald Trump partly because of a culture of racism and misogyny.
&#8220;So, I’m going to have a show of hands. How many of you believe that racism and misogyny played a role in Vice President Harris’ defeat?&#8221; Capehart asked.
Every candidate quickly raised their hands as did the audience members.
&#8220;That&#8217;s good. You all passed,&#8221; Capehart said.

Republicans and political commentators blasted the DNC chair candidates&#8217; response to Capehart&#8217;s question. More than 77 million Americans voted for Trump over Harris in 2024, including a <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/11/07/trump-black-latino-men-working-class-00188185" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shift</a> from Hispanic and black men in Trump&#8217;s favor. Trump also made gains among <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/yes-trump-improved-young-men-drew-young-women-rcna179019" target="_blank" rel="noopener">young women</a> in his election victory over Harris.

The DNC chair will be <a href="https://apnews.com/article/dnc-chair-winter-meeting-wikler-martin-27c12854863eb1d0753db741352b5dfa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">elected</a> by members on Saturday. Outgoing chairman Jaimie Harrison announced he would not run for another term after Democrats lost the White House and control of the Senate after the November election.

The House Oversight Committee will ask Martin O’Malley, Joe Biden’s head of the Social Security Administration, to testify on why he signed an agreement letting employees telework through 2029, just days before resigning his post.
“[T]he hearing will address existing agreements between federal agencies and federal employee unions that purport to prevent incoming executive branch officials appointed by President Trump from telling their own employees – and those of the American people – to show up to work,” Rep. James Comer (R-Kentucky), the chairman of the committee, wrote in a <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2024/12/Letter-to-OMalley-122324.pdf">letter</a> to O’Malley on Monday.
“You signed the SSA agreement with [American Federation of Government Employees] AFGE on November 27, 2024—after informing the press of your intent to run for chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC)—and just days before stepping down from your role at SSA,” the letter said, citing The Daily Wire’s exclusive reporting. The article found that instead of union and management being on opposing sides, O&#8217;Malley actually attended a November 12-15 union conference in Florida, where he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/social-security-head-drank-with-union-members-before-giving-them-telework-through-2029" target="_blank" rel="noopener">drank and played guitar with union members who praised him</a>, before signing the contract and then resigning his post on November 29.
Locking in telework at levels that originated during a global pandemic seemed to be outside of the interests of even the Joe Biden administration, which has repeatedly said that federal employees should return to the office in order to provide the best service to taxpayers. Locking in telework for five years also seems odd considering the Social Security Administration just spent $120 million renovating its headquarters, which is currently 91% vacant.
“Thus, you managed the SSA workforce for only a few days under a CBA that will tie the hands of your successor at SSA for the duration of the next Administration, and beyond. Your motive for signing such an agreement is unclear, nor is it clear why the public interest is served by having a departing official of a lame duck Administration determine the work arrangements to occur at an agency for years after he is gone. Democracy is best served when an incoming, duly elected President and his appointees are empowered to actually manage the workforce they are charged with overseeing. The SSA CBA seems intended to prevent just that,” the letter continued.
The letter suggested that O’Malley may have given away government favors in order to boost his personal ambitions to head the DNC, given that unions are influential in the party. The contract may have been bad for taxpayers who expect prompt service from Social Security, but it was “extremely popular with the AFGE members—who you partied with in Florida shortly before signing it—and with other public employee unions that form a core constituency of the DNC that you are now running to chair,” it said.
The letter said nearly all Social Security employees are eligible for telework and have been spending less than half their time in the office, even as metrics such as the speed of processing disability applications have gotten worse. 
Unions could pose an impediment to Trump reforming the federal workforce, including bringing them back to the office. A Senate report found that up to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/only-6-of-feds-work-from-an-office-full-time-and-some-arent-working-at-all-audit-finds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">94% of federal employees are working from home.</a> Federal office buildings have only a 12% occupancy rate, despite taxpayers spending $16 billion a year on the facilities. The working-from-home employees included a Social Security employee who was actually running a home inspection business on the clock. He had his mom send a few emails during the day from his computer, and he got away with it for three years.
“We believe your testimony will shed light on why so much of the federal workforce is currently at home, and federal agency offices are largely vacant. We also expect it will educate Members as to how federal collective bargaining law and practice has helped facilitate this situation,” Comer concluded.

Martin O’Malley, the Biden administration’s Social Security Commissioner, partied with union members in Florida days before signing a contract preventing managers from reducing telework compared to the COVID era, The Daily Wire has learned.
The American Federation of Government Employees <a href="https://www.afgec220.org/">Council 220</a>, which represents 27,500 employees of the Social Security Administration (SSA), held its Caucus Conference in Fort Lauderdale from November 12-15. The conference is where government employees plot how to extract as much as possible from management. But O’Malley, the top manager, was in attendance, drinking and singing songs with attendees, who praised him, according to materials obtained by The Daily Wire.
On November 27, O&#8217;Malley signed the agreement with the union locking in telework through 2029. Two days later, he resigned from the agency in order to run for chair of the Democratic National Committee. That means the former Maryland governor signed a contract that he would not have to live under, but other managers would. The giveaway to the union could give him cache with party activists that could help him secure the DNC gig.
Edwin Osorio, the council’s vice president, posted a picture of him out on the town at the conference, captioning it “Had a great night hanging out with the greatest commision[er] of Social Security ever had!” Video shows O’Malley regaling attendees with an Irish ballad on his guitar, crooning about “drink[ing] ourselves stupid.”
Mike Watson, a political influence researcher at the conservative-leaning Capital Research Center, said the dynamic raises questions about whether the deal was in the best interest of taxpayers and those who depend on Social Security, or whether it represented a bargaining table with both signatories on the same side.
“O’Malley partying at the AFGE conference is just a particularly vivid way to show what was already true: Unions elect their bosses, who then side with them in negotiations, while taxpayers are left out in the cold,” he said.
He said that even staunch labor activists recognized that the give-and-take between management and labor in private companies wouldn’t work in government, with Franklin Delano Roosevelt writing that “the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service.”
Social Security commissioners’ terms can last longer than one presidential administration. Andrew Saul, O&#8217;Malley&#8217;s predecessor, had been set to lead the agency through 2025. But Biden fired him and installed O’Malley at the <a href="https://www.afge.org/media-center/publications/the-government-standard/government-standard-janfeb-2024/ssa-leadership-change-is-victory-for-workers/">behest</a> of the union, who objected to the fact that Donald Trump had initially installed Saul.
Council 220 president is Jessica Lapointe. An online photo shows her posing with a sign that says “Vote Kamala.” Lapointe&#8217;s <a href="https://www.afge.org/article/the-activist-jessica-lapointe-social-security-administration/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">job</a> at the Social Security Administration is to help people who don&#8217;t speak English get Social Security checks.
The Social Security Administration <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2024/12/SSA-AFGE-Agreement.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">union agreement</a>, obtained by The Daily Wire, is structured as a resolution to various years-old “grievances,” meaning O’Malley could have signed it earlier, but did not. The agreement doesn’t just lock administration employees into a level of work-from-home flexibility that began with a global pandemic, but it takes away management’s historic rights to dictate work terms.
The grievances claim “disparate treatment of or disparate impact on unspecified minority and/or disabled bargaining unit employees. The Grievances are dated: February 11, 2015; February 11, 2016; April 24, 2017 (amended January 31, 2018); June 27, 2018; October 9, 2019; March 23, 2020; and June 21, 2021.”
The union agreed to drop the grievances in exchange for doing away with existing language that management “will determine the number of scheduled telework days, if any, eligible positions, and percentage of employees permitted to telework,” and replacing it with “Each Deputy Commissioner will adhere to the current number of telework days, eligible positions, and percentage of employees permitted to telework as of the date of this agreement until October 25, 2029.”

It changed “Management has sole discretion to change, reduce, suspend, or eliminate approved telework day(s)” to “temporarily change.” That means that the Trump administration, which has suggested it wants to bring employees back to the office, could try its hand at “temporarily” eliminating telework for a period of multiple years, though that would probably lead to a legal dispute.
Also remaining in the memorandum of understanding is “Management also has sole discretion to change, reduce, or suspend approved telework day(s) for any employee due to the employee&#8217;s performance.” The Trump administration might be able to construe that as applying, for example, to all but the most exemplary employees.
The Social Security Administration did not respond to questions about the appropriateness of its leader appearing as a celebrated guest at a union conference, and then signing a long-term contract on his way out the door. It also did not say how much taxpayer money went toward the Florida union conference.

Taxpayers pay the salaries of employees during hours that they engage in union activities, a practice known as “official time.”
“If I were attempting to combat government inefficiency and waste,&#8221; Watson said. &#8220;I would absolutely target for elimination the practice of using taxpayer money, rather than members’ dues, to pay union officials conducting union work.”
Social Security Administration employees are tasked with getting checks to the elderly and disabled. But as they partied in Florida and sought permanent remote work, there were indications that work was not getting done. Disabled people have to wait more than <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/securitystat/disability-processing-time">half a year</a> for employees to make a determination, on average, if they are eligible for Social Security.
It&#8217;s possible O’Malley did not agree to give up management rights earlier because President Joe Biden didn’t think telework was a good idea — raising the prospect of whether the goal was simply to sandbag the agency under the Trump administration. The Biden administration spent $120 million renovating Social Security&#8217;s headquarters, even though it is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/only-6-of-feds-work-from-an-office-full-time-and-some-arent-working-at-all-audit-finds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">91% unoccupied</a> because of telework. In 2022, Biden used his State of the Union address to call for a return to the office, and his chief of staff repeatedly pressed Cabinet officials to do so.
There is evidence that telework has been abused by Social Security Administration employees. In the most <a href="https://oig.ssa.gov/news-releases/2024-09-27-former-social-security-administration-employee-sentenced-for-fraudulent-telework-emergency-childcare-and-medical-leave-schemes/#:~:text=Markham%20was%20paid%20his%20full,telework%E2%80%9D%20on%20official%20SSA%20time.">sensational case</a>, an employee ran a home inspection business while he was supposedly working from home for the agency, and having his mom occasionally send emails from his account was enough to get away with it for three years.
“The Biden administration clearly seems to be trying to bind its successor from making reforms that Trump and his allies promised,” Watson said.

Siobhan Arnold, who claims to work in media relations at Villanova University, <a href="https://web.archive.org/save/https://twitter.com/siobhanphilly/status/1199838534573658113">wrote</a> on Twitter, “Martin O’Malley just drove Ken Cuccinelli out of the Dubliner in DC w/ a passion-laced and shame-invoking tirade on behalf of immigrant refugee children!!!”
Senior Buttigieg Communications Advisor Lis Smith responded to the news by writing on Twitter: &#8220;Thanks giving came early this year &#8212;&gt;&#8221;

In an interview with The Washington Post, Arnold <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/ken-cuccinelli-walked-into-a-bar-and-martin-omalley-lit-into-him/2019/11/28/8277421c-1191-11ea-b0fc-62cc38411ebb_story.html">said</a> that “O’Malley was shouting,” adding, “I don’t think Cuccinelli was responding. I think he’s like, ‘Time to go. Just got here and I’m leaving.’”
In a <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/cuccinelli-fires-back-at-omalley-calls-behavior-sad-and-shocking">statement</a> to Fox News, Cuccinelli said that O’Malley was cursing loudly “to the point of veins bulging on his neck,” a claim that O&#8217;Malley did not exactly dispute in his interview with The Washington Post.
Cuccinelli told Fox News: “As I walked up to one of the bars among several in The Dubliner to order my Guinness, I heard screaming and cussing behind me to my left, which I did not immediately take notice of other than the fact that it was louder than everything else in the pub. When I turned to look I saw O’Malley and he was obviously screaming at me. For a moment I thought he was trying to be funny, as we’ve met before, which I thought was strange. It was immediately clear that he was cursing and screaming for real, to the point of veins bulging on his neck.”
“O’Malley pushed his way through the small group to confront me face to face, still cursing me, the President, and my Italian ancestry and he got right up in my face, bumped up against me and invited me to take a swing at him,” Cuccinelli continued, adding that after he realized how out of control O&#8217;Malley appeared to be, he told him, “Martin, one of us has to rise above this, and it’s obviously not going to be you.”
Cuccinelli noted that O’Malley’s comments about the Trump administration’s immigration policies were “odd” because his comments “applied to President Obama’s policies, a fact he clearly did not appreciate me pointing out (without screaming it, [by the way]).”
“Martin’s behavior was as sad as it was shocking,” Cuccinelli said. “I learned on the other side of the pub that Martin’s screaming was so loud that people on the other side of the pub heard him. I also learned from others who have known Martin for years that while his behavior was shocking, it was not new to them.”

O&#8217;Malley was either intentionally deceptive with his tweet or completely oblivious to the fact that the Jacksonville Sheriff&#8217;s Office revealed on Monday that the shooter purchased his two firearms in Maryland &#8212; not Florida.

Judging from his response, the most painful accusation Hillary Clinton leveled against Bernie Sanders in Sunday&#8217;s Democratic primary debate in South Carolina was that he had been <a href="http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/266221-clinton-accuses-sanders-of-disloyalty-to-obama">disloyal to President Obama</a>.
In a night filled with pandering to the African American vote (which included <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/2670/hillary-goes-all-black-lives-matter-sundays-debate-james-barrett">throwing police under the bus</a>), Clinton attempted to deflect Sanders&#8217; accurate description of <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2015/10/13/investing/hillary-clinton-wall-street/">her crony ties to Wall Street</a>&#8212;a damning accusation these days to the <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/2669/top-googled-questions-dem-candidates-debate-tell-james-barrett">increasingly socialist</a> Democratic party&#8212;by playing the Obama card.

Sanders responded to the malevolent charge by noting that he and his &#8220;friend&#8221; Obama had &#8220;worked together on many issues.&#8221; 
The Hill <a href="http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/266221-clinton-accuses-sanders-of-disloyalty-to-obama">notes</a> that Martin O&#8217;Malley had actually tried that dig on Sanders before in an earlier debate and PolitiFact judged it to only be <a href="http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/nov/10/martin-omalley/fact-checking-martin-omalleys-claim-bernie-sanders/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">half-true</a>; Sanders did call for someone to challenge Obama in 2012, but only because he wanted to pressure Obama to move even further left. The reality is Sanders worked hard to get Obama elected in both 2008 and 2012&#8212;and Clinton knows it. But things like honesty, transparency, and facts don&#8217;t matter to the Clinton camp, particularly when her <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/2645/hillarys-poll-numbers-slipping-faster-2008-aaron-bandler">poll numbers</a> are starting to get worrisome.

Unfortunately for O&#8217;Malley, the bearded attendee, apparently named &#8220;Kenneth,&#8221; told him he appreciated O&#8217;Malley&#8217;s persistence, but still wouldn&#8217;t commit to supporting him. O&#8217;Malley sheepishly told MSNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Morning Joe,&#8221; &#8220;The very last event of the night, we actually had a whopping total of one person show up, but by God, he was glad to see me. So we spent the time with him.&#8221;
&#8220;Kenneth,&#8221; speaking to MSNBC, said of O&#8217;Malley that he was &#8220;working on him&#8221; but argued that Iowans &#8220;want to see the whole campaign play out&#8221; before they commit to supporting any candidate.
O&#8217;Malley stated, &#8220;So I wasn&#8217;t surprised that he was uncommitted. But I was glad he took the time to come out in the snow to see me. We almost canceled that last event but we were out there anyway, so we plowed through.&#8221;
Sarah Beckman, a reporter at the event, <a href="http://sarahbeckman.tumblr.com/post/136187052552/braving-a-snow-storm-in-the-name-of-the-iowa">quoted</a> &#8220;Kenneth&#8221; saying to O&#8217;Malley:

I think you have a great platform to be running, and I think you have a great future here in Iowa. I wish you well. On paper, if I were to look at just the resumes, you would have the strongest resume in my mind. But then all this other stuff&#8230;I think those two other candidates, there are problems with both of them. I don&#8217;t think Sanders would be easily electable. So don&#8217;t underestimate the fact that Iowa will turn out differently. I think it will turn out differently than what the polls are showing. Jimmy Carter would not have been president if it weren&#8217;t for Iowa.
