Martha&#8217;s Vineyard is about to run out of marijuana thanks to a state regulator balking at allowing cannabis to be transported over the ocean, and the situation has led to a lawsuit and a scramble to fix the problem.
One marijuana company, Fine Fettle, previously grew its own product on the island, circumventing the ocean transportation problem. However, the company, which also runs the last open pot dispensary on the island, has said it plans to stop growing marijuana on Martha&#8217;s Vineyard and will soon close the store.
Meanwhile, the state&#8217;s Cannabis Control Commission is afraid that transporting the drug over ocean waters could break federal law despite Massachusetts voters legalizing marijuana back in 2016.
Critics have argued that there are ways to get to Martha’s Vineyard without leaving state territorial waters, but so far, no marijuana supplier has convinced the commission to allow this.
Benjamin Zachs, who runs Fine Fettle&#8217;s Massachusetts operations, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/marthas-vineyard-run-pot-led-lawsuit-scramble-regulators-110973917" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Associated Press that they initially thought the &#8220;captured market&#8221; on Martha&#8217;s Vineyard would remain profitable. However, many people now bring their personal stashes over on the ferry, and the drug is cheaper in other parts of Massachusetts. The cost of hiring testers on the island is also higher, Zachs said.
Among the island&#8217;s famously wealthy residents are more than 230 registered medical marijuana patients and thousands more recreational users. Some medical users are older adults, including an 81-year-old woman who has been unable to get her regular order.
The owner of one of the island&#8217;s two marijuana dispensaries, Geoff Rose, sued the state&#8217;s Cannabis Control Commission as his Island Time dispensary was running out of product. Rose had to temporarily shutter the store last month due to the regulations, and the island has only one other marijuana dispensary that is <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/marthas-vineyard-run-pot-led-lawsuit-scramble-regulators-110973917" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> due to run out of product by September.

The state&#8217;s Cannabis Control Commission has expressed to Martha&#8217;s Vineyard residents that it considers the problem an urgent one.
“Obviously, this is a super priority for us, because we don’t want to see the collapse of an industry on the islands,” Commissioner Kimberly Roy told residents during a visit to the island earlier this month.
“It&#8217;s a funny juxtaposition,” Roy said. “The entire industry is federally illegal. But that&#8217;s evolving, too. We are just trying to stay responsive and nimble.&#8221;
Other areas where pot is legal locally have struggled with illegal dispensaries.

Several of the illegal immigrants Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis flew to Martha&#8217;s Vineyard in 2022 have since been approved for U-visas — based on claims that they were the victims of a crime.
According to a <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/04/22/metro/desantis-migrants-marthas-vineyard-legal-status/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> published Monday by The Boston Globe, three of the 49 illegal immigrants who were transported from San Antonio, Texas, to Florida and then to Martha&#8217;s Vineyard have been granted what&#8217;s called a &#8220;bona fide determination&#8221; – meaning that they qualify for a U-visa but have not yet received it.
U-visas are typically &#8220;set aside for victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to law enforcement or government officials in the investigation or prosecution of criminal activity,&#8221; <a href="https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/victims-of-criminal-activity-u-nonimmigrant-status#:~:text=The%20U%20nonimmigrant%20status%20(U,or%20prosecution%20of%20criminal%20activity." target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
And in this particular case, they cooperated with a Bexar County Sheriff&#8217;s investigation into whether any of them had been lured or coerced into getting on the flights. The investigation lasted about one month, and Sheriff Javier Salazar concluded that the illegal immigrants involved had been &#8220;lured &#8230; under false pretenses&#8221; to board the planes and then said they were &#8220;unceremoniously stranded&#8221; upon their arrival in Martha&#8217;s Vineyard. DeSantis has repeatedly denied any coercion, saying that all migrants <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/feds-investigate-desantis-for-flying-migrants-to-marthas-vineyard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">boarded the flights</a> &#8220;voluntarily.&#8221;

Official U-visas could take up to ten years to approve because Congress only allows 10,000 to be issued annually — but the &#8220;bona fide determinations&#8221; protect recipients from deportation until their visas arrive and allow them to legally work in the United States during that time as well. U-visas also put recipients on a path to obtaining green cards.
Hemanth C. Gundavaram, co-founder and director of the Immigrant Justice Clinic at Northeastern University School of Law, explained to The Globe that the goal was to help correct for &#8220;a failure in our system,&#8221; noting that in order to qualify for U-visas, the illegal immigrants must first be shown to be the victims of crimes and then had to assist law enforcement or the government in any investigation that followed.
&#8220;This is a harm reduction provision. If you didn’t have these protections, someone would have to stay here, worry about deportation, and not be able to make a living,&#8221; he said.

According to a <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ero-boston-apprehends-brazilian-sex-offender-marthas-vineyard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> published by Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston on Monday, the Brazilian national was identified as 37-year-old Saulo Cardona Ferreira — and he is currently &#8220;wanted by authorities in his home country for failure to serve a prison sentence.&#8221;

ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd Lyons issued a statement on the arrest, which reportedly took place on November 14: &#8220;This undocumented Brazilian national represented a significant threat to the inhabitants of Martha’s Vineyard. He sexually assaulted a five-year-old child in his homeland and then ran from authorities when held accountable for his actions. ERO Boston will not allow such predators to threaten our residents. We will continue to apprehend and remove anyone who attempts to use our New England community as a refuge from justice.&#8221;
A warrant was issued for Ferreira&#8217;s arrest in May of 2019 by the 2nd Criminal Court of Sorriso (in Sorriso, Mato Grosso, Brazil) when he did not show up to serve his sentence — and according to ICE, he came to the United States sometime after that.

&#8220;The undocumented noncitizen unlawfully entered the United States on an unknown date at an unknown location without being inspected or admitted by an immigration official,&#8221; the report read, meaning that Ferreira must have come into the United States without going through an official checkpoint or having any contact with immigration and Border Patrol officials.
Law enforcement reportedly learned of Ferreira&#8217;s presence in Martha&#8217;s Vineyard in late September, and eventually apprehended him during a traffic stop. ICE’s Fugitive Operations Team made the arrest, and will keep him in custody until he appears before an immigration judge.

Former President Barack Obama&#8217;s old Chicago neighbors are practically up in arms over the local government&#8217;s plan to dump a bunch of illegal aliens in their community. If they&#8217;re looking for a solution, maybe they should look to Obama&#8217;s new neighbors on Martha&#8217;s Vineyard for the best way to deport foreign nationals.
On Wednesday, residents of the Hyde Park community in Chicago <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/residents-protest-plan-house-migrants-hyde-park-area-motel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expressed</a> their outrage over a new shelter for hundreds of illegal immigrants coming next week. This week, the city of Chicago abruptly announced that Hyde Park would have to accept the change. Many were furious at the decision and wondered why it was being forced on them.
&#8220;I think it&#8217;s a basic issue of notification and respect,&#8221; local man Emmanuel Jackson said at the meeting. &#8220;If these types of wide changes are being made in the community in which we live, we should know about them.&#8221;
&#8220;How do we know that these are not criminals coming into our community?&#8221; one woman asked.
Another lady really let the elected officials have it.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t want them there. Take them someplace else or send them back to Venezuela. I don&#8217;t care where they go,&#8221; she yelled. &#8220;This is wrong.&#8221;
The unnamed woman also wondered what the city government is doing for any of the black homeless Chicagoans.
&#8220;You&#8217;ve got<a href="https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/fss/supp_info/Homeless/2021PITCOUNT/2021HomelessPoint-in-TimeCountReport.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 73%</a> of the people homeless in this city are Black people,&#8221; a woman said. &#8220;What have you done for them?&#8221;

She&#8217;s right about that number, according to 2021 data, and she posed a good question. Maybe what she really should be asking is why Chicago voters keep overwhelmingly voting for Democrats. In 2020, President Joe Biden took home 90% of the vote in Hyde Park. Indeed, the Windy City hasn&#8217;t had a Republican mayor since 1931. In other words, Chicago voted for illegal immigration. Democratic officials see no problem with it and let it happen.
Or, maybe the ire should be aimed at Obama himself. He got his haircut in Hyde Park and bought a home directly across the street from the <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/obama-center/ct-obamas-chicago-a-guided-tour-to-meaningful-sites-to-the-president-20150512-htmlstory.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">neighborhood</a> in 2005. When he visited Hyde Park in 2013, he even said, &#8220;It&#8217;s good to be <a href="https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/the-press-office/2013/02/15/remarks-president-strengthening-economy-middle-class" target="_blank" rel="noopener">home!</a>&#8221;
But, after he left the presidency, he cashed in, got himself a few nice homes, and hasn&#8217;t looked back. He couldn&#8217;t care less about black Chicago residents. His new presidential library is even being blamed for gentrification.
And why would he really care what happens to a bunch of people whom he doesn&#8217;t need to depend on for votes? He&#8217;s got a beautiful mansion in Martha&#8217;s Vineyard and runs with a new crowd now.
The Vineyard, as it&#8217;s known by the lily-white inhabitants, was able to remove 40 illegal aliens in under 48 hours last summer. It was efficient and smooth. They even earned <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bostonians-of-the-year-marthas-vineyard-residents-win-prize-for-dealing-with-illegal-aliens-for-48-hours" target="_blank" rel="noopener">widespread praise</a> for their efforts to send the foreign nationals packing. Those illegal aliens were sent there by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The national press was outraged that he gave The Vineyard little notice.
In Hyde Park, residents were furious with their liberal officials for also not giving any notice.
&#8220;Our building is getting a new grocery store. We got public notification three months ago,&#8221; Jackson said in disbelief. &#8220;So you&#8217;re going to change an actual hotel to a shelter &#8211; and not tell anybody?&#8221;
We don&#8217;t expect that the National Guard will come in to assist Hyde Park with getting rid of the illegal aliens. Nor do we expect Chicago locals to really take a radical stand against this chaos by voting Republican. But they should.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Massachusetts ruled this week that the drowning death of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/barack-obama" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Obama</a> family&#8217;s personal chef was an accident.
Tafari Campbell, 45, worked as a sous chef for Barack and Michelle Obama and was visiting Martha’s Vineyard from Dumfries, Virginia, at the time of his passing, authorities said.

He added that the office does not release autopsy reports to the public.
Campbell allegedly was &#8220;standing on his paddleboard when he lost his balance and fell off&#8221; into the Edgartown Great Pond, the Boston Globe <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/08/22/metro/obama-chefs-death-accidental/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> at the time of the incident in late July. &#8220;He struggled to remain afloat before slipping beneath the water. Campbell was not wearing a life jacket and wasn’t secured to his board. Campbell’s body was found in about 8 feet of water.”
Police said at the time, “A male paddle boarder who had gone into the water appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then submerged and did not resurface. … Another paddle boarder was on the pond with him at the time and observed him go under the water.”
After several state and local emergency personnel, including the U.S. Coast Guard, arrived on the scene, Massachusetts State Police divers recovered Campbell’s body approximately 100 feet from the shore shortly before 10 a.m. Authorities <a href="https://www.mspnews.org/post/update-2-msp-divers-environmental-police-recover-body-of-paddle-boarder-from-edgartown-great-pond" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> they located Campbell’s body using a boat with an attached side-scan sonar system and aerial support from MSP and U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crews.
“President and Mrs. Obama were not present at the residence at the time of the accident,” Massachusetts State Police said.

The Obama family said they are “grieving the loss of a truly wonderful man.”

In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.&#8221;
“That’s why, when we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. He’s been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone,” the statement continued. “Today we join everyone who knew and loved Tafari — especially his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin — in grieving the loss of a truly wonderful man.”

Unlike other 911 calls recorded in the Edgartown Police Department&#8217;s logs that were made the night that Barack Obama’s private chef Tafari Campbell drowned, the reason for the 911 call involving Campbell was left blank, according to a report.
Campbell, 45, drowned on July 23 while paddle boarding on Great Edgartown Pond. Police have refused to release the name of the person he was with, although dispatch calls confirmed there was another paddleboarder on the water with Campbell. At 7:46 p.m., a 911 call was reportedly made from Wilson’s Landing, a paddleboard launch site, to report trouble had arisen with Campbell, <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12346143/Tafari-Campbell-paddle-boarding-death-riddle-Cops-left-call-log-reporting-Obama-private-chefs-drowning-BLANK-said-came-2-miles-away-refuse-reveal-water.html">The Daily Mail</a> reported. That call was made from a woman who roughly half an hour later was reportedly using a boat nearby and possibly looking for Campbell.
“We met with the reporting party, she is on a boat with two individuals and they&#8217;re going back and forth as well,” one of the rescuers at stated at 8.23 p.m. that evening.
&#8220;A male paddle boarder who had gone into the water appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then submerged and did not resurface. &#8230; Another paddle boarder was on the pond with him at the time and observed him go under the water,&#8221; police said.
Authorities <a href="https://www.mspnews.org/post/update-2-msp-divers-environmental-police-recover-body-of-paddle-boarder-from-edgartown-great-pond">said</a> they located Campbell&#8217;s body using a boat with an attached side-scan sonar system and aerial support from MSP and U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crews.
Barack and Michelle Obama live roughly two miles away on Turkeyland Cove Road on Martha’s Vineyard; the house has a private beach where a paddleboard could conceivably be launched. According to The Daily Mail, the Obamas&#8217; office did not respond when asked who was present in the Obama’s house when the tragedy occurred.
Campbell&#8217;s body, without any external injuries, was found Monday at 10 a.m., roughly 100 feet from shore. Although Massachusetts State Police concluded the death is not suspicious, the toxicology test done during his autopsy has not yet returned results.

The Massachusetts State Police (MSP) said a joint-agency search operation got underway after Martha&#8217;s Vineyard Police and firefighters responded to a call at 7:46 p.m. on Sunday about a male paddle boarder who disappeared in the pond. An <a href="https://www.mspnews.org/post/joint-agency-search-underway-for-missing-paddle-boarder-on-edgartown-great-pond" target="_blank" rel="noopener">initial statement</a> from the agency said another paddle boarder was with Campbell and witnessed him go under the water.
With the help of side-scan sonar from a boat, divers were able to recover the body approximately 100 feet from the shore at a depth of about 8 feet on Monday morning, MSP said in a <a href="https://www.mspnews.org/post/update-2-msp-divers-environmental-police-recover-body-of-paddle-boarder-from-edgartown-great-pond" target="_blank" rel="noopener">second statement</a>. The agency also said an investigation into the fatality was being conducted by the State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands District and Edgartown Police.

A top chef for President Barack Obama&#8217;s White House kitchen staff was found dead on Monday after a paddle boarding accident occurred in the Edgartown Great Pond near the former president&#8217;s multi-million dollar mansion on Martha&#8217;s Vineyard, state police said.
Tafari Campbell, 45, who worked as a sous chef for the former first family, was visiting Martha&#8217;s Vineyard from Dumfries, Virginia, at the time of his passing, authorities said.

Campbell went missing on Sunday evening after local authorities reportedly received a call from the Obama residence saying an adult male paddle boarder struggled to stay above the water&#8217;s surface until submerging and did not resurface, local media <a href="https://www.mvtimes.com/2023/07/24/search-missing-paddle-boarder-great-pond/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
&#8220;A male paddle boarder who had gone into the water appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then submerged and did not resurface. &#8230; Another paddle boarder was on the pond with him at the time and observed him go under the water,&#8221; police said.
After several state and local emergency personnel, including the U.S. Coast Guard, arrived on the scene, Massachusetts State Police divers recovered Campbell&#8217;s body approximately 100 feet from the shore shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday. Authorities <a href="https://www.mspnews.org/post/update-2-msp-divers-environmental-police-recover-body-of-paddle-boarder-from-edgartown-great-pond" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> they located Campbell&#8217;s body using a boat with an attached side-scan sonar system and aerial support from MSP and U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crews.
Obama, who purchased the nearly 7,000-square-foot Martha&#8217;s Vineyard estate in 2019 for $11.75 million, sits yards away from the pond where authorities discovered the former White House kitchen staff member, according to <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12331627/Desperate-search-paddleboarder-43-went-missing-water-Marthas-Vineyard.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Mail</a>.
&#8220;President and Mrs. Obama were not present at the residence at the time of the accident,&#8221; Massachusetts State Police said.

&#8220;Tafari was a beloved part of our family,&#8221; the family said. &#8220;When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together. In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.
&#8220;That&#8217;s why, when we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. Remember when <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/welcome-home-now-get-the-hell-out-illegal-aliens-already-bused-out-of-marthas-vineyard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Martha&#8217;s Vineyard residents</a> had to deal with illegal aliens for two days in September courtesy of one <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ron-desantis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL)</a>?
This was after Labor Day and &#8220;the season&#8221; was starting to slow down. Suddenly, 49 men, women, and children appeared on the island. None of these liberals had ever seen anything like it — perhaps because they are on a literal island secluded from the Democrat policies causing the flood of illegal aliens.
Nonetheless, those hearty New Englanders dealt with the newcomers for a paltry 48 hours the best that they could.
For that Herculean task, The Boston Globe — the region&#8217;s largest Left-wing rag — has awarded the citizens of Martha&#8217;s Vineyard an honorable mention for &#8220;Bostonians of the Year.&#8221;
It should be noted that past recipients include Monica Cannon-Grant — a BLM-aligned activist who was arrested last March along with her husband Clark Grant. The two were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/progressive-activist-a-2020-bostonian-of-the-year-arrested-on-federal-charges-of-fraud-conspiracy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">federally charged and arrested</a> on 18 counts of fraud and conspiracy in relation to her non-profit, Violence in Boston (VIB).
Over the summer, <a href="https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/violence-in-boston-shuts-down-as-its-leaders-face-fraud-conspiracy-charges/2768506/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">VIB shut its doors</a> and Cannon-Grant <a href="https://www.bostonherald.com/2022/08/17/monica-cannon-grant-wants-unemployment-assistance-as-she-fights-federal-fraud-charges/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">requested unemployment assistance</a> from the state.
Yet Cannon-Grant&#8217;s troubles of her own making are nothing compared to the plight that the denizens of the lily-white vacation spot of climate czar John Kerry and the Obamas had to go through (a fiasco also of their own making).

You might recognize the name Belcastro because she is the same broad who exasperatingly told the press that sooner or later, those pesky South American visitors would have to say, &#8220;¡Vamos! ¡Adios!&#8221;
“At some point in time, they have to move from here to somewhere else, right?” Belcastro said at the time. “We don’t have the services to take care of 50 immigrants. And we certainly don’t have housing — we’re in a housing crisis as we are on this island.”

And they did leave soon after. The illegal immigrants were on a bus flanked by the national guard the next day. Where those people are now, nobody knows.
One thing is for sure, they aren&#8217;t hanging around Martha&#8217;s Vineyard — and thank God for that, Belcastro must be thinking.
Despite the summer population hovering around 200,000 — and the offseason having only 20,000 — the townsfolk said they could not possibly find housing or anything for these folks. The idea of using their own money and housing for an extended period of time — not the taxpayers&#8217; moolah — never occurred to them.
Regardless, The Globe thought their efforts deserved recognition.
The main resting place for these Hispanic sojourners was the basement of a small chapel. Again, the island is littered with gigantic mansions and numerous bed &amp; breakfasts, but for some reason, the best they could do was the bowels of a tiny church. It was one of the wildest things The Vineyard had ever seen.
And boy did people flock once they got wind some exotic visitors had arrived. Everybody just had to see the latest attraction. It was even more exciting than seeing former President Barack Obama go out for a walk on the beach.
That&#8217;s not a joke. That&#8217;s nearly a direct quote from the paper.
&#8220;As Belcastro, Baker, and other volunteers dusted off cots and inflated air mattresses in St. Andrew’s basement, reports of the surprise visitors began to ripple across the island,&#8221; the paper read. &#8220;That attracted residents to the church with the same urgency that an Obama sighting mobilizes tourists in the summer.&#8221; (emphasis added)
Besides highlighting one guy who spoke Spanish and another volunteer who didn&#8217;t eat a crumb all day, the paper did admit that America&#8217;s immigration system is not working:

You will note that the words &#8220;Joe Biden&#8221; or &#8220;Democrats&#8221; are not factored into The Globe&#8217;s analysis as to who is to blame for the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/a-big-house-sized-deluge-of-illegals-migrants-is-about-to-hit-americas-border-every-9-days" target="_blank" rel="noopener">crisis that could swell to 14,000 border crossers per day</a>.
You also won&#8217;t find any of the citizens of Portland, Maine, recognized as a &#8220;Bostonian of the Year&#8221; for how they&#8217;ve had to handle illegal immigration. Since 2019, the largest city in the 44th poorest state in America has spent more than $60 million dealing with &#8220;asylum seekers&#8221; as the Left loves to call them.

Nor will The Globe recognize towns like the once-prominent milltown <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ice-federal-authorities-arrest-dozens-massachusetts-operation-targeting-drugs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lawrence, Massachusetts,</a> that have been ravaged by illegal aliens bringing in deadly drugs like fentanyl into the country.
All of that is because of a southern border that has been ignored for decades by Democrats, as well as some establishment Republicans. When President Donald J. Trump tried to tackle it, he was vilified as a Nazi for four years straight by the kind of folks who read The Globe on a daily basis.
But hey, for 48 hours, Martha&#8217;s Vineyard residents got a taste of their own medicine.
Unfortunately, their main takeaway from the experience was that they are modern-day Mother Teresas. You&#8217;d think they would conclude they should stop voting Democrat so that poorer places strewn throughout America don&#8217;t have to deal with the same problem 24/7 and 365. But they&#8217;d have to stop kissing their own behind for that to happen.

The Biden administration’s <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/treasury-department" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Treasury Department</a> announced an investigation into Governor <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/ron-desantis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ron DeSantis</a> (R-FL) over his use of funds to transport illegal <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/immigration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">immigrants</a> to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/marthas-vineyard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Martha’s Vineyard</a>.
DeSantis sent 50 migrants to the elite Massachusetts vacation hamlet last month in a move that exposed Democratic <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/marthas-vineyard-slammed-after-migrants-removed-in-under-48-hours-someone-elses-problem-now" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hypocrisy</a> on immigration. Lawmakers such as Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) subsequently asked Treasury Department Deputy Inspector General Richard Delmar to examine DeSantis’ use of Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund to pay for the immigrants’ relocation.
“States should not be permitted to use COVID-19 relief funds for any parochial interest unrelated to the pandemic, particularly for naked political conduct that imposes severe and unjust harms on disadvantaged groups of individuals,” the lawmakers said in a <a href="https://www.markey.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/letter_to_oig_on_florida_govs_apparent_misuse_of_taxpayer_dollarspdf.pdf">letter</a>. On Wednesday, Markey released the <a href="https://www.markey.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/treasury_ig_response_to_mass_lawmakers_october_2022.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">message</a> he received from Delmar, which said that his agency has “already sought information” from Florida regarding their use of emergency funds.
“We plan to get this work underway as quickly as possible, consistent with meeting our other oversight mandates and priorities, both in pandemic recovery programs as well as the other Treasury programs and operations for which we have responsibility,” Delmar said. “We are also monitoring legislative and judicial challenges to the use of the funds for this purpose; such developments may affect the scope and timing of our review.”
Both chambers of the Florida legislature, however, had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/leftists-explode-after-desantis-sends-illegal-immigrants-to-marthas-vineyard-the-nazis-did-this">voted</a> to appropriate $12 million for facilitating the transport of illegal immigrants from the state.
Beyond asking the Treasury Department to rebuke DeSantis over the stunt, Markey requested that Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg examine whether the migrants were misled about their journey in violation of federal law, according to a <a href="https://www.markey.senate.gov/news/press-releases/icymi-treasury-department-ig-probing-desantiss-funding-of-cruel-migrant-flights" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a>.
President Joe Biden has witnessed a surge in illegal immigration throughout his tenure. According to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bidens-press-secretary-on-illegal-immigration-its-not-like-somebody-walks-over-actually-millions-do" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> released by Customs and Border Protection, the nation witnessed 66 migrants on the terror watchlist traverse the southern border, while a total of 30 had done the same in the preceding five years. Border agents had more than 2.2 million encounters with migrants during fiscal year 2022.
A <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-immigrants-sue-desantis-for-marthas-vineyard-flights-desantis-responds-in-fiery-statement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">complaint</a> filed by some of the migrants with the help of advocacy group Lawyers for Civil Rights alleged that they were victims of a “fraudulent and discriminatory scheme” to relocate them. The DeSantis administration <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-immigrants-sue-desantis-for-marthas-vineyard-flights-desantis-responds-in-fiery-statement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">replied</a> to the lawsuit by sharing photographs of the consent forms that the illegal immigrants signed before traveling to Martha’s Vineyard.
“Florida’s program gave them a fresh start in a sanctuary state and these individuals opted to take advantage of chartered flights to Massachusetts,” the office said in a statement. “It was disappointing that Martha’s Vineyard called in the Massachusetts National Guard to bus them away from the island within 48 hours.”
Sheriff Javier Salazar of Bexar County, Texas, likewise attempted to investigate DeSantis over the move. Though he said that flying the migrants elsewhere “does tend to bother me quite a bit,” he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-sheriff-probing-migrants-sent-to-marthas-vineyard-im-not-able-to-point-to-any-broken-laws" target="_blank" rel="noopener">admitted</a> that he could not name any laws that were broken.
“Florida gave them an opportunity to seek greener pastures in a sanctuary jurisdiction that offered greater resources for them, as we expected,” a spokesperson for DeSantis acknowledged, noting that unless the Massachusetts national guard “has abandoned these individuals, they have been provided accommodations, sustenance, clothing and more options to succeed following their unfair enticement into the United States.”

Watters responded to Cruz&#8217;s lengthy rant by saying he hadn&#8217;t seen the Texas Senator get quite that worked up in a very long time — and Cruz explained that even though Biden had not been to the border and seen firsthand the women and children who were being raped and trafficked by coyotes and cartels, he had.
Cruz concluded by noting that when the illegal immigrants were flown into Martha&#8217;s Vineyard, authorities there had moved to &#8220;deport&#8221; them to a military base within 24 hours — and he wondered whether Texas could do the same.
&#8220;Can we send them back?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;Oh, no, no, no, that&#8217;s just for rich billionaire leftists who the only time they&#8217;re willing to see an immigrant is if they want someone to mow their damn lawn.&#8221;

A conservative nonprofit known for trolling liberals took out a newspaper ad to mock residents of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/island-adventure-bill-maher-mocks-biden-left-over-marthas-vineyard-migrant-dump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Martha’s Vineyard</a> who sent 50 migrants packing after they were dropped off on the idyllic island on orders of Sunshine State <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ron-desantis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Governor Ron DeSantis</a>.
The ad, run in the Providence Journal, a major Rhode Island daily newspaper, channels the wealthy residents of Martha’s Vineyard and claims to support illegal immigration. However, the ad goes on to explain that the illegal immigrants aren’t welcome on the Massachusetts island.
“Our beautiful island home of Martha’s Vineyard is very small and the mansions have very expensive artwork, Persian rugs, and unchlorinated saltwater swimming pools that are very difficult to clean,” the ad explains. “For these reasons, we cannot accept any undocumented Americans at this time and respectfully ask they be sent to a working class community they can enrich with their global diversity and romantic poverty.”

The mockery was triggered by the island denizens’ swift rejection of migrants flown there on September 14 by Florida. After just one overnight stay on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ben-shapiro-calls-out-the-yard-sign-hypocrisy-of-marthas-vineyard">Martha’s Vineyard</a>, the migrants were bused out to the military’s Joint Base Cape Cod in Massachusetts as the state’s Governor Charlie Baker (R) declared an emergency and sent in the National Guard.
Although they quickly ushered the migrants out of their Tony town, Martha&#8217;s Vineyard residents lined up to pay them a teary farewell and one held up a sign saying their brief presence had &#8220;enriched us.&#8221;
DeSantis and fellow GOP Governors Greg Abbott, of Texas, and Doug Ducey, of Arizona, have sent thousands of illegal immigrants to blue states and so-called “sanctuary cities” including New York, Chicago, and Washington. The Republican governors reason that their states do not support President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, so cities and states that do should bear some of the burden of absorbing them.
More than two million migrants have swarmed across the Mexican border since Biden took office and rescinded many of the border security policies of his predecessor, former President Trump.
