<p style="font-weight: 400;">In the wake of the sixth former Philadelphia Phillie to die of brain cancer, suspicions have arisen that a possible cause of their deaths was the “forever chemicals” found in the artificial turf they played on in Veterans Stadium.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Ken Brett (2003), Tug McGraw (2004), Johnny Oates (2004), John Vukovich (2007), Darren Daulton (2017), and David West (2022) all died from glioblastoma, an aggressive, deadly form of brain cancer. The Philadelphia Inquirer bought four souvenir samples of the AstroTurf from the stadium, which was demolished in 2004, and had Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories Environmental Testing examine them. Results showed 16 different types of PFAS, or per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, aka “forever chemicals,” within them. University of Notre Dame researchers tested two other samples and found PFAS.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“It was just sad all the way around to lose all those guys. To lose them that way,” former Phillies pitcher Larry Christenson <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/news/inq2/astroturf-vet-artificial-turf-pfas-forever-chemicals-glioblastoma-cancer-phillies-1980-20230307.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the Inquirer</a>. “Then you start thinking, with Vuke, Darren Daulton — it opened a can of worms: ‘Whoa. Why are all of our teammates dying? Is there something that can narrow it down?’”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Apprised of the fact that the six Phillies had died from glioblastoma, Jacob de Boer, an environmental chemist at the Free University of Amsterdam, commented, “That is such a high number that it is worrying.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The artificial turf could reach as high as 165 degrees, releasing gases that could be inhaled. “In the dugout, the team put boxes with ice on the stairs leading up to the clubhouse,” former Phillies catcher Bob Boone recalled. “I’d come in and see guys standing with their feet in the boxes. I used to spend my day laughing at them: ‘Getting hot out there?’”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Two studies, one from China and another from Italy, posited that PFA chemicals could be linked to cancer. The Chinese study found the chemicals in brain tissue and the Italian study discovered the chemicals stored in the brains of people who drank PFAS-contaminated water.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“Once PFAS gets into [a person’s] blood, they circulate through all the organs,” University of Notre Dame physicist Graham Peaslee, who has studied PFA compounds, said. “We know that the liver is affected. We know that the kidneys are affected. We know the testicles are affected. But nobody’s ever done the study to see if the brain is affected, because glioblastoma is such a rare disease.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Timothy Rebbeck of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, cautioned, “We’re never going to have a good measure of what the Phillies players were exposed to.”</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">“The materials used in synthetic turf have been thoroughly reviewed by both federal and state government agencies and are considered to be nonhazardous,” Melanie Taylor, the president and CEO of the Synthetic Turf Council, stated. “Going forward, our members will continue to pay close attention to evolving regulations and standards to ensure the highest safety of our products.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Brett’s daughter Sheridan, now 34, worries about the artificial turf kids still play on. “Those chemicals don’t go away,” she said. “Who is in contact with them now?”</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The sign is emblazoned with a picture of Robinson, and passersby noticed it read &#8220;Jakie Robinson Parkway&#8221; over the weekend. The roadway runs through two of New York City&#8217;s boroughs, Brooklyn and Queens.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sports fans are no doubt familiar with Robinson’s many achievements. The baseball legend is known for becoming Major League Baseball&#8217;s first black player in the modern era despite many obstacles. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Robinson was the first black player to join the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. The six-time all-star batted .313 over his 10-year MLB career, per </span><a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/35752464/jackie-robinson-name-misspelled-new-york-city-road-sign"><span style="font-weight: 400;">ESPN</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. He won the rookie of the year award, an MVP award, a batting title, and won the 1955 World Series championship with the Dodgers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The baseball legend retired from baseball early in 1957 and went on to become a civil rights activist. Robinson was a spokesperson for the <span id="ref1279883"></span>National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and also made appearances with Martin Luther King, Jr. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Robinson became the first black person inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and Presidential Medal of Freedom.</span></p>
<p>Robinson died from a heart attack in 1972 at the age of 53 following previous health complications, including heart disease and diabetes.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">That New York stretch of highway was initially named the Interboro Parkway but was renamed in honor of Robinson in 1997 on the 50th anniversary of his rookie season with the Dodgers. </span></p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">All-Star catcher and Hall of Fame broadcaster Tim McCarver, the favorite catcher of two Hall of Fame pitchers, Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton, has <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-02-16/tim-mccarver-big-league-catcher-and-broadcaster-dies-at-81?leadSource=uverify%20wall" target="_blank" rel="noopener">died</a> at the age of 81.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">McCarver debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1959 at the age of 17, playing in eight games. By 1963 he had become their starting catcher, playing in 127 games while batting .289. He won the first of two World Series Championships with the team and Gibson in 1964, as the Cardinals bested the New York Yankees in seven games. His three-run homer in the tenth inning of the fifth game won it for the Cardinals in a Series in which he batted a whopping .478. Three years later, the Cardinals won the Series again, this time defeating the “Impossible Dream” Boston Red Sox in seven games. That year, McCarver hit .295 and finished second in MVP voting.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson,” McCarver once joked. “He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was it was hard to hit.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">McCarver later played for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1970-72, finishing the 1972 season with the Montreal Expos before returning to the Cardinals in 1973-74 and a few games with the Boston Red Sox at the end of 1974 and the beginning of 1975. Then he was traded to the Phillies again, and this time he teamed up with Carlton, who had played with him on the Cardinals but by the time McCarver joined the Phillies would only pitch to McCarver.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“Behind every successful pitcher, there has to be a very smart catcher, and Tim McCarver is that man,” Carlton, nicknamed “Lefty,” recalled at his Hall of Fame induction speech in 1994. “Timmy forced me pitch inside. Early in my career I was reluctant to pitch inside. Timmy had a way to remedy this. He used to set up behind the hitter. There was just the umpire there; I couldn’t see him (McCarver), so I was forced to pitch inside.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: inherit;">In 2017, before he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his illustrious broadcasting career, including his 18-year partnership with Joe Buck, McCarver referenced the distance between the pitching mound and home plate joking, “When Lefty and I leave this world, they should bury me 60 feet, 6 inches from him.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“I think there is a natural bridge from being a catcher to talking about the view of the game and the view of the other players,” McCarver — who won six Emmys after he started his broadcast career in 1980 — told the Hall of Fame when he and Buck received the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting. “It is translating that for the viewers. One of the hard things about television is staying contemporary and keeping it simple for the viewers.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: inherit;">“Some broadcasters think that their responsibility is to the team and the team only,” McCarver <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/35673836/world-series-champion-tv-analyst-tim-mccarver-dies-81" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The New York Times. “I have never thought that. My No. 1 obligation is to the people who are watching the game. And I’ve always felt that praise without objective criticism ceases to be praise. To me, any intelligent person can figure that out.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: inherit;">McCarver, who knew as much about baseball as anyone, also authored the books “Baseball for Brain Surgeons &amp; Other Fans” and “Tim McCarver&#8217;s Diamond Gems: Favorite Baseball Stories from The Legends of the Game.”</p>

<p>Former New York Yankees slugger <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/derek-jeter-enters-the-baseball-hall-of-fame/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Derek Jeter</a> admitted on Wednesday that he had once worn a gold thong in the hopes of snapping a month-long hitting slump.</p>
<p>The Hall-of-Famer <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/sports/derek-jeter-admits-he-wore-a-gold-thong-to-help-break-hitting-slump-in-2004/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">made the confession</a> during an appearance on &#8220;The Tonight Show,&#8221; telling host Jimmy Fallon and singer Rita Ora that his 32-game slump in 2004 had been so bad that he finally tried the good-luck charm recommended by his teammate, first baseman Jason Giambi.</p>

<p>Both Fallon and Ora found the statement difficult to believe — but then Jeter went on to explain exactly how it had come about.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is the truth,&#8221; Jeter insisted, adding, &#8220;I’m going to ultimately regret playing this game, but let me explain. I had a new teammate that I played with in 2002, and he always had a gold thong hanging from his locker. And he told me ‘anytime you struggle, you wear the gold thong, you’re guaranteed to get a hit.’”</p>
<p>Jeter said that he initially thought Giambi was a little crazy — but when the 2004 slump hit, every day he walked into the locker room, Giambi would point at the thing — which he kept hanging in his locker at all times.</p>
<p>After 32 games without a hit, Jeter said he&#8217;d been willing to try just about anything: &#8220;So finally, I wore the thong. Now it wasn’t thong to skin; I had shorts on underneath, so I put the thong over the shorts: first pitch, home run.&#8221;</p>
<p>Giambi <a href="https://www.nj.com/yankees/2015/10/remember_when_yankees_legend_derek_jeter_wore_the.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed Jeter&#8217;s story</a> during a 2015 appearance with ESPN&#8217;s Dan Le Batard, saying that he wasn&#8217;t entirely sure whether Jeter had asked for the thong or someone had put it into his locker prior to the April 29 game.</p>
<p>&#8220;The golden thong is legendary. It’s never not gotten a hit. It was his first slump. I don’t think the guy’s ever slumped in his career. He’s unbelievable. You know, the gold thong, he had to get out of it,&#8221; Giambi explained.</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">A convicted felon will serve 30 years in prison for the 2021 murder of a teenager who was returning from a Houston Astros baseball game with his father.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Paul Castro and his 17-year-old son David were leaving the July 8, 2021, Astros-Oakland Athletics game — which the Athletics won 2-1 — in their pickup truck when Gerald Williams cut them off in his white Buick, court documents stated. That led to a verbal altercation between the father and Williams, a convicted felon who spent 12 years in prison for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Williams began following the Castros out of the downtown area.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Castro attempted to elude Williams, driving at a high rate of speed, but as he made a U-turn at the east Freeway, he heard several gunshots ring out and saw the rear window of the truck had been shattered, then realized his son had been shot. David Castro, a <a href="https://blogs.houstonisd.org/news/2021/08/24/westside-hs-honors-david-castro-with-random-acts-of-kindness/">senior</a> at Westside High School, was part of the Westside Wolf Band Drumline and drum captain of the entire percussion section.</p>
<p>“David’s senior year is over as is my life as I knew it,&#8221; the father said in 2021.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Surveillance video from a Valero gas station confirmed that Williams had chased the pickup truck in his car; police found two fired .40 caliber bullets at the U-turn.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">A police investigation found that a car matching the description of Williams’ was put on sale through Offer Up. The police looked for the person who posted the ad, later discovering that  Williams had bought a Buick Lacrosse on May 30, but the vehicle was nowhere to be found. It was later found in a field near Williams’ house.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“It is a living nightmare,” Paul Castro <a href="https://www.khou.com/article/news/crime/david-castro-road-rage-shooting/285-be087025-14ea-46f2-a373-f4a66e7866f4">said</a> when he saw Williams in court. “And every time we have to come up here and stare at the person accused of killing David it is painful. David’s not here. He’s (Williams) going to go home with his family tonight because of a discount bond.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Paul Castro <a href="https://blogs.houstonisd.org/news/2021/08/24/westside-hs-honors-david-castro-with-random-acts-of-kindness/">started</a> a #RAKDavid (Random Act of Kindness) movement.</p>

<p><span class="apple-converted-space">Hendriks, who saved 37 games with a 2.81 earned run average last season, a year after leading the American League with 38 saves, vowed to beat the disease. The type of cancer he has, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, has a 70% rate of survival beyond five years.</span></p>

<p>“Hearing the word ‘Cancer’ came as a shock to my wife and I, as it does to millions of families each year,” <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CnLGoQlPN8C/?hl=en">Hendriks wrote</a> in the post. “However, I am resolved to embrace the fight and overcome this new challenge with the same determination I have used when facing other obstacles in my life.”</p>

<p>Hendriks, 33, is a 12-year veteran of the big leagues and has played for five different teams. He is one of the team’s leaders and has long been active in community and charitable causes.</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley is seeking guardianship of the grandson his homeless and troubled daughter <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mlb-hall-of-famers-homeless-daughter-arrested-after-allegedly-abandoning-newborn-in-woods" target="_blank" rel="noopener">delivered Christmas night</a> in a tent in New Hampshire.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The baseball great and his wife released a statement Friday expressing their sorrow for Alexandra Eckersley and their intention to seek custody of the newborn. The baby was found alive Monday morning in a tent in the woods near Manchester despite freezing temperatures and his mother was arrested.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“We are utterly devastated by the events that unfolded on Christmas night when our daughter Allie delivered a baby while living in a tent,” <a href="https://www.wcvb.com/article/full-statement-from-eckersley-family-issued-dec-29-2022/42362443" target="_blank" rel="noopener">read the statement</a> released to WCVB-Boston. “It is heartbreaking that a child was born under such unthinkable conditions and in such tragic circumstances. We learned with everyone else from news reports what happened and are still in complete shock. We had no prior knowledge of Allie’s pregnancy.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Eckersley, 26, called 911 early Monday to say she had given birth, then initially refused to tell responders where the baby was. The woman, who police say was on drugs, finally took them to the tent, where the baby boy was found alive on a pile of blood-soaked sheets despite freezing temperatures. Eckersley, who has a prior drug conviction, was charged with second-degree assault/extreme indifference and falsifying physical evidence charges, as well as misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct and endangering the welfare of a child, <a href="https://patch.com/new-hampshire/concord-nh/more-felonies-against-mom-accused-leaving-newborn-homeless-tent">according to Patch.com</a>.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The baby, which weighed 4.4 pounds and is believed to have been born three months prematurely, was taken to a nearby hospital.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Dennis Eckersley, 68, was one of the greatest relief pitchers in Major League Baseball history and later served as a Boston Red Sox radio broadcaster. He pitched from 1975-1998, racking up 197 wins and 390 saves. He won the American League’s Cy Young and Most Valuable Player awards in 1992 after saving 51 games for the Oakland A’s.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">In the statement, the former star said he and his wife had adopted Alexandra at birth and that she had been troubled all her life.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“Though it is painful to share, we feel it necessary to offer greater context of Allie’s circumstances and background,” read the statement. “Allie has suffered from severe mental illness her entire life. Allie was hospitalized numerous times for her illness and lived in several residential programs. We did our very best to get Allie all of the help and support humanly possible.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The heartbroken family said that once Alexandra became an adult, she could not be forced into treatment for drugs and mental illness and that she had chosen to live on the streets of New Hampshire for the last six years.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“We have always offered Allie a path home but she has made other choices,” the statement said. “We hope Allie now accepts the treatment she desperately needs for her mental health issues. We also hope that all those who have heard this tragic story withhold judgment about our daughter until all the facts come out.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The family said it is in the process of filing a guardianship petition so that it can look after the infant.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“We thank you for your support and prayers for this beautiful, innocent baby boy,” the statement concluded. “We hope people understand what an agonizing situation this is and we respectfully ask for privacy.”</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">The adopted daughter of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/major-league-baseball" target="_blank" rel="noopener">baseball Hall of Famer</a> Dennis Eckersley was arrested Monday after allegedly abandoning her newborn boy after giving birth in a New Hampshire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/homelessness" target="_blank" rel="noopener">homeless camp</a> amid freezing temperatures.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Alexandra Eckersley, 26, who has a prior drug conviction, was charged with second-degree assault/extreme indifference and falsifying physical evidence charges, as well as misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct and endangering the welfare of a child, <a href="https://patch.com/new-hampshire/concord-nh/more-felonies-against-mom-accused-leaving-newborn-homeless-tent" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Patch.com</a>. Police said Eckersley called 911 just after midnight on Monday and said she had given birth in the woods near Manchester. When first responders arrived, they found Eckersley intoxicated, according to police.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“Based on [the officer’s] interaction with Eckersely, he believed [she] was under the influence of drugs,” an affidavit stated. “He stated that at times, Eckersley was unsteady on her feet and that she would thrash around, side to side.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Eckersley allegedly told police she didn’t know where the baby she’d just had was, prompting a search of the woods by police, firefighters, and EMTs. A detective later said a K-9 unit was brought in as police expected to recover a dead body due to the below-freezing temperatures. But an hour later, Eckersley told an EMT the location of the tent she’d been living in, and said the baby would be there, according to police.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Eckersley led authorities to the tent, where they found the baby alive on blood-soaked blankets inside, according to Patch.com.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“While on the scene at the campsite, Alexandra allegedly played music from her phone and sang along,” the police affidavit said.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The baby, which weighed 4.4 pounds and is believed to have been born three months prematurely, was taken to a nearby hospital.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Eckersley later told police she gave birth around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday but that her boyfriend was unable to detect a pulse on the baby. <p style="font-weight: 400;">When a detective asked Eckersley why she abandoned the baby, Eckersley allegedly said, “What do they tell you when a plane goes down? Save yourself first,” according to the affidavit.</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">Perry broke into the big leagues with the San Francisco Giants on a roster loaded with future Cooperstown peers, including Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, and Orlando Cepeda. He won 20 or more games four times, including his Cy Young seasons with Cleveland in 1972 and with San Diego in 1978 at age 40.</p>
<p>&#8220;Before I won my second Cy Young I thought I was too old &#8212; I didn&#8217;t think the writers would vote for me,&#8221; Perry said in an article on the National Baseball Hall of Fame website. &#8220;But they voted on my performance, so I won it.&#8221;</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">While Perry had a good fastball and wicked curveball, he was best known for his spitball, where saliva on the ball affects its movement and rotation. His 1974 autobiography was titled “Me and the Spitter.” In the book, Perry wrote that he learned the pitch from Giants teammate Bob Shaw, and first threw it in 1964 against the <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/team/_/name/nym/new-york-mets">New York Mets</a>. He pitched 10 shutout innings in the game and was soon elevated to the starting rotation.</p>
<p>Perry said he chewed slippery elm bark to build up his saliva to throw the pitch, which he claims he abandoned in 1968 after a league crackdown. He said he turned to other substances, including Vaseline, to put spin on the ball, but said his ritual of touching different parts of his jersey was as much to psych out hitters into thinking he was applying a foreign substance as it was to actually doctor the ball.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">When Perry retired, he was 11th on the all-time wins list and had the third most strikeouts (3,534), behind Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">After his career, Perry founded the baseball program at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C., and was its coach for the first three years.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Perry leaves behind his ex-wife, Carol Caggiano, and four children. His older brother, Jim, is 87.</p>

The Senator did not require medical attention.&#8221;</p>
