White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed concerns from New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman on Wednesday about the administration&#8217;s restrictions on Elon Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) project.
&#8220;There is a conflict of interest law in place that says that people who have personal interests can&#8217;t interact with government entities that could touch on those,&#8221; Haberman said. &#8220;Has President Trump signed a waiver for Elon Musk? Does such a thing exist? If it does, will you guys release it in the interest of transparency that he&#8217;s committed to?&#8221;
Leavitt responded: &#8220;I have not seen the law that you are referring to. What I can tell you is that Elon Musk, as I&#8217;ve confirmed before, is a special government employee.&#8221;
&#8220;He is filing the proper financial disclosure and he is complying with all applicable federal laws,&#8221; she said. &#8220;As you also heard, Elon addressed this directly yesterday, on the alleged conflict of interest, and he said, everything he&#8217;s doing is very public, and if you all perceive a conflict of interest, you&#8217;re welcome to bring that up.&#8221;
&#8220;And as the President said, if he feels like Elon is engaging in something that&#8217;s a conflict of interest, he will tell Elon not to do that,&#8221; she continued.
&#8220;And Elon also said yesterday that before he moves forward with anything, he consults with the President of the United States,&#8221; she concluded. &#8220;So we&#8217;re very confident with the ethics and the guardrails that have been put in place here.&#8221;

&#8220;Maggie, I can speak from personal experience — we worked together when I was at the White House — and there was no reporter who got under Donald Trump&#8217;s skin the way you did, but he was also fixated on and almost seemed to want your approval,&#8221; Griffin began, referencing her time as the White House Communications Director.
&#8220;There were countless times you&#8217;ll remember that I would have to go grab you and say, &#8216;He wants to do an interview now,'&#8221; Griffin continued. &#8220;And in fact, a couple of times, if the terms weren&#8217;t right, you&#8217;d say no. Why do you think he&#8217;s so fixated on you — and it goes into the same question of afraid of you?&#8221;
&#8220;Alyssa, I really think it&#8217;s about The New York Times, which he is uniquely obsessed with, and this has gone back for decades,&#8221; Haberman replied. &#8220;His sense of being from the outer boroughs in New York City, the elites who he felt like looked down on him, even though he wanted their approval.&#8221;
&#8220;I really think that&#8217;s a lot of what it&#8217;s about,&#8221; Haberman concluded, noting that she was just the reporter with whom he had direct interaction — which was why to the outsider, it might appear as though the obsession was with her rather than with the outlet for which she worked.
Haberman later went on to blame the media — primarily in the decade prior to Trump&#8217;s foray into politics — for essentially allowing him to build an empire of mythology around himself.
&#8220;Where I do think there is a significant criticism of the media is the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, when he was doing all of this myth making about himself and building this artifice brick by brick — and each brick was a news story&#8230; that, I think, is something the industry needs to deal with,&#8221; Haberman concluded.

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman suggested to CNN on Monday that the reason the media did not treat claims seriously that the coronavirus pandemic originated from a lab accident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology was because the information was coming from the Trump administration.

That&#8217;s not what we&#8217;re talking about here. We&#8217;re talking about a lab accident. But we&#8217;ve come a long way from people dismissing this as a conspiracy theory to a lot of people taking this seriously, Maggie.
MAGGIE HABERMAN, CNN POLITICAL ANALYST: We have John. And so because of that, that made this instantly political. I think that that was, you know, example 1,000 when the Trump administration learned that when you have burned your own credibility over and over again people are not immediately going to believe you, especially in an election year.
However, that does not mean it&#8217;s not worth discussing. There has been a sort of persistent, albeit, relatively quite focus on whether that was the origin of the virus and it is compounded by the fact that there are &#8212; have not been clear answers from Chinese officials about it and that investigators trying to find out the origin have been stymied.
So I do thing we&#8217;re in a different period of this, John. But I also think it&#8217;s important to remember, because I think it&#8217;s getting reframed in a way that&#8217;s just not true to what happened. I don&#8217;t mean here.
BERMAN: Right.
HABERMAN: I mean in this broader debate by Trump supporters about what happened when this was originally raised.
BERMAN: And I think a lot of people want just answers at this point and it is important.

President Donald Trump on Saturday morning accused New York Times’ reporter Maggie Haberman of misrepresenting his visit to Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, hospitals to meet victims of last weekend’s mass shootings.
“Maggie Haberman of the Failing <a href="https://twitter.com/nytimes">@nytimes</a> reported that I was annoyed by the lack of cameras inside the hospitals in Dayton &amp; El Paso, when in fact I was the one who stated, very strongly, that I didn’t want the Fake News inside &amp; told my people NOT to let them in. Fake reporting!” Trump tweeted.

On Friday, three writers for the Times, including Haberman, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/09/us/politics/trump-dayton-el-paso-shootings.html?action=click&amp;module=Top%20Stories&amp;pgtype=Homepage">reported</a> that Trump was allegedly “frustrated that his attacks on his political adversaries had resulted in more coverage than the cheery reception he received at a hospital in Dayton, Ohio, the first stop on his trip.”
Trump, according to the Times, apparently “screamed at his aides to begin producing proof that in El Paso people were happy to see him.”
The Times also blamed Trump for suffering brought on Tito Anchondo, whose brother and sister-in-law were killed in the El Paso shooting. Anchondo traveled to meet Trump and was photographed with Trump and his 2-month-old nephew, who survived the shooting. The photo brought press scorn and derision because Trump gave a “thumbs up” while posing for the photo. Press attacks on the president resulted in harassment for Anchondo.
The Times claimed that the photo was part of a press package “of White House-distributed photographs, tweets and videos that focused on the president instead of people affected by the shootings.”
The Times claimed that Trump’s staff kept the media away but that the president was unhappy with “the result.”
The Times provided no support for their claims of Trump’s frustration – named or anonymous – and simply reported the president’s alleged outcries as fact. The only named or anonymous sources mentioned by the Times dispute the account. One senior White House official who was on the trip told the outlet that the characterization of the “thumbs up” photo were unfair. The official told the outlet that Trump was trying to show that he was approachable and supportive.
The Hill <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/456944-trump-lashes-out-at-nyt-reporter-over-dayton-el-paso-coverage">received a statement</a> from the Times saying their report was “based on interviews with three White House and administration officials in addition to many others including families affected by the mass shooting,” even though no such information was provided in the article, as is standard practice.
Trump sent another tweet chastising the press for its coverage of him, saying the media had never been “more inaccurate, unfair or corrupt!”
He added: “We are not fighting the Democrats, they are easy, we are fighting the seriously dishonest and unhinged Lamestream Media. They have gone totally CRAZY. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

President Trump Accuses NYT Reporter Of False Reporting Of His Trip To El Paso And Dayton Hospitals

Eight Covington Catholic High School students are suing presidential hopeful Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), CNN&#8217;s Ana Navarro, The New York Times&#8217; Maggie Haberman, and other media players for defamation.
Lawyers for the students — identified as John Does 1-8 — &#8220;filed a defamation suit on Thursday in Kentucky’s Kenton County Circuit Court against 12 individuals — lawmakers, journalists/media figures and social media personalities included,&#8221; <a href="http://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/exclusive-8-covington-catholic-teens-sue-most-egregious-high-profile-individuals-for-defamation/">Law&amp;Crime</a> reported Friday.
In January, high school boys from Covington Catholic wearing pro-Trump &#8220;Make America Great Again&#8221; hats were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/42416/heres-what-you-need-know-about-confrontation-emily-zanotti">smeared</a> as racists by politicians and members of the mainstream media for allegedly harassing a Native American man who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/42586/fact-check-update-video-shows-nathan-phillips-james-barrett">claimed</a> to have served in the Vietnam War, Nathan Phillips. But after <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/42423/read-it-teen-center-covington-catholic-hs-amanda-prestigiacomo">full video context</a> came out, it was clear that the boys did no such thing; they were the ones confronted by Mr. Phillips and were brutally harassed earlier by another activist group.
According to Law&amp;Crime, Rep. Deb Haaland (D-NM), Kathy Griffin, ABC News’ Matthew Dowd, former CNN employee Reza Aslan, Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King, Kentucky entrepreneur Adam Edelenare, Princeton University History Professor Kevin M. Kruse, Mother Jones Editor-in-Chief Clara Jeffery, and Rewire.News Editor-in-Chief Jodi Jacobson are all being sued by the Covington students, in addition to Warren, Navarro, and Haberman.
&#8220;Several of our Senators, most-famous celebrities, and widely read journalists, collectively used their large social media platforms, perceived higher credibility and public followings to lie and libel minors they never met, based on an event they never witnessed,&#8221; the lawsuit says, according to the outlet. Law&amp;Crime did not link to the suit so as to protect the minors from having their addresses exposed.
&#8220;These defendants called for the kids to be named and shamed, doxxed and expelled, and invited public retaliation against these minors from a small town in Kentucky,&#8221; the suit continues. &#8220;The defendants circulated false statements about them to millions of people around the world. The video of the entire event, known to the defendants, exposed all of their factual claims against the kids as lies. The defendants were each individually offered the opportunity to correct, delete, and/or apologize for their false statements, but each refused, continuing to circulate the false statements about these children to this very day on their social media platforms they personally control.&#8221;
As reported by <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/49980/judge-dismisses-nick-sandmanns-lawsuit-against-paul-bois">The Daily Wire</a> earlier this month, a lawsuit filed on behalf of Nick Sandmann — a &#8220;MAGA&#8221; hat-wearing teen who became the face of the most egregious media smears — was dismissed by a Kentucky judge on July 26. U.S. District Judge William Bertelsman (an appointee of former President Jimmy Carter) dismissed the $250 million suit targeting The Washington Post because the outlet never mentioned Sandmann by name.

After an op-ed calling for a Trump/Haley ticket in 2020 was published in The Wall Street Journal, the media have been speculating about the so-called &#8220;Draft Haley&#8221; movement underway.
Andrew Stein, the founder of the &#8220;Democrats for Trump&#8221; movement in 2016, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-haley-in-2020-11561316951">argued</a> in an op-ed published on Sunday that President Donald Trump should drop current Vice President Mike Pence for former United States ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley to win over &#8220;politically moderate suburban women, many of whom see him as divisive.&#8221;
&#8220;I mean no disrespect for Mr. Pence, who&#8217;s loyally served the president and the nation. But he&#8217;s given Mr. Trump all the help he can. He inspired his fellow evangelical Christians to take a chance in 2016,&#8221; argued Stein. &#8220;But in 2020 they&#8217;ll already be repelled by the Democrats&#8217; embrace of infanticide. Mr. Trump&#8217;s greater obstacle to re-election comes from politically moderate suburban women, many of whom see him as divisive.&#8221;
Stein noted that Republican National Committee Chairman Ronna McDaniel recently asked why the party was &#8220;losing with women.&#8221;
&#8220;Mr. Trump has promoted women to the highest echelons of the White House. But elevating energetic and effective leaders like Kellyanne Conway, Hope Hicks and Sarah Huckabee Sanders has earned him scant credit,&#8221; the former president of the New York City Council wrote. &#8220;It&#8217;s too late for Mr. Trump to revamp his political personality. But with the 2016 election in the past, Nikki Haley on the ticket could tamp down the antipathy for Mr. Trump that seems to afflict so many moderate and Republican-leaning women.&#8221;
The New York Times&#8217; Maggie Haberman threw fuel on rumors surrounding a Haley VP-push on Sunday night, suggesting The Wall Street Journal would not run Stein&#8217;s op-ed without approval from owner Rupert Murdoch.

In the linked Times piece, Haberman and Katie Rogers reported that Trump was privately questioning Pence&#8217;s &#8220;loyalty,&#8221; apparently poking around for his 2020 ticket, though just a week prior the president seemed to publicly endorse Pence as his official 2020 VP pick.
&#8220;Mike, will you be my running mate?&#8221; Trump asked Pence, who raised his hand and nodded in the affirmative.
&#8220;Will you? Thank you. O.K., good. That was unexpected, but I feel very fine,&#8221; the president said.
Following The Wall Street Journal op-ed, The Week also <a href="https://theweek.com/articles/848759/nikki-haley-wont-save-trump">speculated</a> that the &#8220;Draft Haley&#8221; movement is &#8220;underfoot.&#8221;
Two days earlier, the Tampa Bay Times argued, similarly to Stein, that Trump needs Haley. &#8220;[S]omething is missing. Something fresh, something new, something different. &#8230; Enter Nikki Haley, stage right. The Democrats may have no answer for her,&#8221; <a href="https://www.tampabay.com/opinion/columns/trumps-ticket-to-a-second-term-a-new-running-mate-adam-goodman-20190621/">wrote</a> Adam Goodman. &#8220;The former South Carolina governor, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and emerging favorite of Republicans right, left, and Trumpian, Haley would spontaneously inject life, character and future into the national ticket. She would also do more to renew and broaden the GOP label than anyone since Ronald Reagan.&#8221;
Despite the speculation, it seems unlikely Trump would make the jump now, since he officially launched his 2020 campaign last week in Florida. But then again, we&#8217;ve seen crazier things happen in presidential elections.

The blowback from the egregiously irresponsible reporting of most mainstream media outlets about the context-less viral video of the boys from Kentucky&#8217;s Covington Catholic High School &#8220;harassing&#8221; and &#8220;threatening&#8221; a Native American protester could include some legal headaches for some of the reporters and outlets.

PJ Media&#8217;s <a href="https://pjmedia.com/trending/lawyer-for-covington-catholic-hs-families-threatens-lawsuits-against-media-unless-they-retract-false-stories/">Debra Heine</a> reports that Barnes went on to explain that &#8220;anyone who doesn&#8217;t correct and retract&#8221; the false claims could expect a libel lawsuit &#8212; and just writing that &#8220;a more complex picture has emerged&#8221; might not protect them.
Barnes has since called out multiple media outlets and personalities, issuing similar libel threats and underscoring that attempts to simpily soften or back away from their original reports isn&#8217;t enough. As the high school junior at the center of the controversy, Nick Sandmann, explained in his response to the smear campaign against him &#8212; which was quickly exploded by video footage giving clear evidence that the boys were not the &#8220;harassers&#8221; but the ones who were getting harassed by a group of racial activists &#8212; he and his family have become the target of threats. Below is the full text of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/42423/read-it-teen-center-covington-catholic-hs-amanda-prestigiacomo">Sandmann&#8217;s response</a> to the false reports and fallout from the biased, irresponsible journalism:

I am providing this factual account of what happened on Friday afternoon at the Lincoln Memorial to correct misinformation and outright lies being spread about my family and me.
I am the student in the video who was confronted by the Native American protestor. I arrived at the Lincoln Memorial at 4:30 p.m. I was told to be there by 5:30 p.m., when our busses were due to leave Washington for the trip back to Kentucky. We had been attending the March for Life rally, and then had split up into small groups to do sightseeing.
When we arrived, we noticed four African American protestors who were also on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. I am not sure what they were protesting, and I did not interact with them. I did hear them direct derogatory insults at our school group.
The protestors said hateful things. They called us &#8220;racists,&#8221; &#8220;bigots,&#8221; &#8220;white crackers,&#8221; &#8220;faggots,&#8221; and &#8220;incest kids.&#8221; They also taunted an African American student from my school by telling him that we would &#8220;harvest his organs.&#8221; I have no idea what that insult means, but it was startling to hear.
Because we were being loudly attacked and taunted in public, a student in our group asked one of our teacher chaperones for permission to begin our school spirit chants to counter the hateful things that were being shouted at our group. The chants are commonly used at sporting events. They are all positive in nature and sound like what you would hear at any high school. Our chaperone gave us permission to use our school chants. We would not have done that without obtaining permission from the adults in charge of our group.
At no time did I hear any student chant anything other than the school spirit chants. I did not witness or hear any students chant &#8220;build that wall&#8221; or anything hateful or racist at any time. Assertions to the contrary are simply false. Our chants were loud because we wanted to drown out the hateful comments that were being shouted at us by the protestors.
After a few minutes of chanting, the Native American protestors, who I hadn&#8217;t previously noticed, approached our group. The Native American protestors had drums and were accompanied by at least one person with a camera.
The protestor everyone has seen in the video began playing his drum as he waded into the crowd, which parted for him. I did not see anyone try to block his path. He locked eyes with me and approached me, coming within inches of my face. He played his drum the entire time he was in my face.
I never interacted with this protestor. I did not speak to him. I did not make any hand gestures or other aggressive moves. To be honest, I was startled and confused as to why he had approached me. We had already been yelled at by another group of protestors, and when the second group approached I was worried that a situation was getting out of control where adults were attempting to provoke teenagers.
I believed that by remaining motionless and calm, I was helping to diffuse the situation. I realized everyone had cameras and that perhaps a group of adults was trying to provoke a group of teenagers into a larger conflict. I said a silent prayer that the situation would not get out of hand.
During the period of the drumming, a member of the protestor&#8217;s entourage began yelling at a fellow student that we &#8220;stole our land&#8221; and that we should &#8220;go back to Europe.&#8221; I heard one of my fellow students begin to respond. I motioned to my classmate and tried to get him to stop engaging with the protestor, as I was still in the mindset that we needed to calm down tensions.
I never felt like I was blocking the Native American protestor. He did not make any attempt to go around me. It was clear to me that he had singled me out for a confrontation, although I am not sure why.
The engagement ended when one of our teachers told me the busses had arrived and it was time to go. I obeyed my teacher and simply walked to the busses. At that moment, I thought I had diffused the situation by remaining calm, and I was thankful nothing physical had occurred.
I never understood why either of the two groups of protestors were engaging with us, or exactly what they were protesting at the Lincoln Memorial. We were simply there to meet a bus, not become central players in a media spectacle. This is the first time in my life I&#8217;ve ever encountered any sort of public protest, let alone this kind of confrontation or demonstration.
I was not intentionally making faces at the protestor. I did smile at one point because I wanted him to know that I was not going to become angry, intimidated or be provoked into a larger confrontation. I am a faithful Christian and practicing Catholic, and I always try to live up to the ideals my faith teaches me &#8212; to remain respectful of others, and to take no action that would lead to conflict or violence.
I harbor no ill will for this person. I respect this person&#8217;s right to protest and engage in free speech activities, and I support his chanting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial any day of the week. I believe he should re-think his tactics of invading the personal space of others, but that is his choice to make.
I am being called every name in the book, including a racist, and I will not stand for this mob-like character assassination of my family&#8217;s name. My parents were not on the trip, and I strive to represent my family in a respectful way in all public settings.
I have received physical and death threats via social media, as well as hateful insults. One person threatened to harm me at school, and one person claims to live in my neighborhood. My parents are receiving death and professional threats because of the social media mob that has formed over this issue.
I love my school, my teachers and my classmates. I work hard to achieve good grades and to participate in several extracurricular activities. I am mortified that so many people have come to believe something that did not happen &#8212; that students from my school were chanting or acting in a racist fashion toward African Americans or Native Americans. I did not do that, do not have hateful feelings in my heart, and did not witness any of my classmates doing that.
I cannot speak for everyone, only for myself. But I can tell you my experience with Covington Catholic is that students are respectful of all races and cultures. We also support everyone&#8217;s right to free speech.
I am not going to comment on the words or account of Mr. Phillips, as I don&#8217;t know him and would not presume to know what is in his heart or mind. Nor am I going to comment further on the other protestors, as I don&#8217;t know their hearts or minds, either.
I have read that Mr. Phillips is a veteran of the United States Marines. I thank him for his service and am grateful to anyone who puts on the uniform to defend our nation. If anyone has earned the right to speak freely, it is a U.S. Marine veteran.I can only speak for myself and what I observed and felt at the time. But I would caution everyone passing judgement based on a few seconds of video to watch the longer video clips that are on the internet, as they show a much different story than is being portrayed by people with agendas.
I provided this account of events to the Diocese of Covington so they may know exactly what happened, and I stand ready and willing to cooperate with any investigation they are conducting.

Politico Magazine&#8217;s <a href="http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/04/28/poll-trump-white-house-press-corps-journalists-215051">annual survey</a> of the White House press corps (WHPC) reflects widespread left-wing and partisan Democrat biases across reporters and journalists assigned to the president&#8217;s domain.

Sixty-three members of the WHPC were polled for a series of questions by Politico Magazine, some more overtly political and partisan than others

Asked about broad biases in the news media&#8217;s coverage of President Donald Trump, 53% of respondents said it has not been biased for or against Trump, 45% of respondents said it has been biased against Trump, and 2% of respondents found it biased in favor of Trump.

Asked to broadly grade the quality of the news media&#8217;s coverage of President Donald Trump on a scale of 1 to 10 (from &#8220;hopelessly&#8221; to &#8220;perfectly&#8221;), the average response was 6.2.

Asked to grade the degree of the Washington, D.C. news media&#8217;s disconnection from &#8220;the rest of America&#8221; on a scale of 1 to 10 (from &#8220;not at all&#8221; to &#8220;totally&#8221;), the average response was 6.0.

Asked which White House correspondents do the best job in covering President Donald Trump, the top response was Maggie Haberman of The New York Times and CNN (also an alumnus of Politico). Other favorites included CNN&#8217;s Jim Acosta, and The Washington Post&#8217;s Robert Costa, David Fahrenthold and Philip Rucker. 

Asked which news media outlets &#8220;do the best job,&#8221; the top responses were The Washington Post, The New York Times, and CNN.

Asked about political affiliations, 37% of respondents said they hold no political registrations, 37% said they are registered independents, 165 said they are registered Democrats, 5% said they are registered Republicans, and 5% reported their political registration as &#8220;other.&#8221;

Jeff Mason, president of the White House Correspondents&#8217; Association and Reuters&#8217; White House Correspondent, denied that his contemporaries were largely biased in favor of left-wing and Democrat politics during a <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/15971/whca-president-were-neutral-and-operate-without-robert-kraychik">Monday interview</a> with Fox News Channel&#8217;s Tucker Carlson. He insisted that his contemporaries&#8217; professional conduct in their capacities as reporters and journalist is mostly &#8220;neutral&#8221; without &#8220;bias.&#8221;

The aforementioned news media outlets all present themselves as politically objective and non-partisan in their presentation of information.

“I know nothing about this,” said former National Security Advisor Susan Rice of federal surveillance of Donald Trump or his campaign-turned-transition team during the last year of the Obama administration.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&amp;v=sH0akjRDJsY&amp;app=desktop">In an interview</a> aired March 22 with PBS NewsHour, Rice denied having any knowledge of what has been branded “<a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/devin-nunes-incidental-collection-trump-transition-article-1.3005685">incidental collection</a>” of communications between Trump’s political teams and foreign state operatives.
In early February, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/09/us/flynn-is-said-to-have-talked-to-russians-about-sanctions-before-trump-took-office.html">The New York Times</a> and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/national-security-adviser-flynn-discussed-sanctions-with-russian-ambassador-despite-denials-officials-say/2017/02/09/f85b29d6-ee11-11e6-b4ff-ac2cf509efe5_story.html?utm_term=.7debbf0b82b8">The Washington Post</a> coordinated with anonymous federal bureaucrats to undermine Trump&#8217;s former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. Flynn <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/13446/out-flynn-national-security-adviser-resigns-heres-ben-shapiro">subsequently resigned</a> following claims that he misled Vice President Mike Pence regarding the nature of his communications with Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak; he did not advise Pence that sanctions on Russia had come up in conversation with Kislyak.
On Monday, Bloomberg’s Eli Lake <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-04-03/top-obama-adviser-sought-names-of-trump-associates-in-intel">reported</a> that Rice requested the “unmasking” of identities of Americans whose communications had been “incidentally” surveilled by federal authorities. Citing anonymous federal officials “familiar with the matter,” he wrote:
<blockquote>White House lawyers last month learned that the former national security adviser Susan Rice requested the identities of U.S. persons in raw intelligence reports on dozens of occasions that connect to the Donald Trump transition and campaign, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter.
The pattern of Rice&#8217;s requests was discovered in a National Security Council review of the government&#8217;s policy on &#8220;unmasking&#8221; the identities of individuals in the U.S. who are not targets of electronic eavesdropping, but whose communications are collected incidentally. Normally those names are redacted from summaries of monitored conversations and appear in reports as something like &#8220;U.S. Person One.&#8221;</blockquote>
Mike Cernovich <a href="https://medium.com/@Cernovich/susan-rice-requested-unmasking-of-incoming-trump-administration-officials-30085b5cff16">first reported</a> Susan Rice’s involvement in the “unmasking” of American identities “incidentally” surveilled by federal authorities on Sunday, connecting it to Rep. Devin Nunes’ (R.-Calif.) recent assertions:
<blockquote>The White House Counsel’s office identified Rice as the person responsible for the unmasking after examining Rice’s document log requests. The reports Rice requested to see are kept under tightly-controlled conditions. Each person must log her name before being granted access to them.
Upon learning of Rice’s actions, H. R. McMaster dispatched his close aide Derek Harvey to Capitol Hill to brief Chairman Nunes.</blockquote>
Political and news media observers will also recall that Rice was deployed by the Obama administration in 2012 to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGXy_yhOfNg">push a false narrative</a> that the Islamic terrorist attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, was provoked by what she described as a &#8220;hateful [anti-Islam] video.&#8221; Occurring months before a presidential election, the incumbent President Barack Obama mobilized his administration to play down perceptions of his team&#8217;s negligence with respect to the attack that left four Americans dead.
