The plane, which was destined for Honolulu, climbed only about 30 feet off the ground before plunging and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/investigators-release-more-photos-of-ups-plane-crash-find-evidence-of-fatigue-cracks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slamming</a> into a scrap metal recycling center in a massive fireball. It was carrying more than 50,000 gallons of fuel, which caused secondary explosions after impact.
During Tuesday&#8217;s hearing, the NTSB released animations showing how fatigue cracks in the pylon connecting the engine to the wing led to a complete fracture, causing the engine to separate from the plane.

Federal investigators are now examining reporting systems put in place by UPS and Boeing to flag mechanical issues.
When asked about procedures followed when problems are discovered, UPS Airlines Director of Engineering and Technical Operations David Springer told the NTSB, &#8220;It has to be addressed, per the manual or other engineer document. It has to be closed before that aircraft would be considered airworthy.&#8221;
Among those killed in the November crash were 47-year-old Louisnes Fedon and his 3-year-old granddaughter, Kimberly Asa. The other victims were identified as Capt. Dana Diamond, 62, Capt. Richard Wartenberg, 57, First Officer Lee Truitt, 45, Angela Anderson, 45, Carlos Fernandez, 52, Trinadette “Trina” Chavez, 37, Tony Crain, 65, John Loucks, 52, John Spray, 45, Matthew Sweets, 37, Ella Petty Whorton, 31, Megan Washburn, 35. The 15th victim, Alain Rodriguez Colina, 50, died on Christmas Day, weeks after the crash, after battling severe injuries.
The NTSB hearing is expected to focus on &#8220;fleet safety processes&#8221; on Tuesday, then turn to pylon safety requirements on Wednesday.

Federal investigators on Thursday released additional images showing the moments leading up to the UPS plane crash in Louisville earlier this month that killed 14 people.
The National Transportation Safety Board released the images in its preliminary <a href="https://www.ntsb.gov/Documents/Prelimiary%20Report%20DCA26MA024.pdf">report</a> on the crash, saying that investigators found &#8220;evidence of fatigue cracks in addition to areas of overstress failure&#8221; on parts near the engine on the left wing. Federal investigators said that the plane never made it higher than 30 feet above the ground before it dropped back down in a fiery crash. The MD-11&#8217;s &#8220;left main landing gear impacted the roof of a UPS Supply Chain Solutions warehouse at the southern edge of the airport.&#8221; The plane then &#8220;impacted a storage yard and two additional buildings, including a petroleum recycling facility, and was mostly consumed by fire.&#8221;

Eleven of the 14 people killed in the crash were customers or employees at the Grade A Auto Parts and Scrap Metal Recycling, which sits just south of the runways at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport. The three others <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/unimaginable-tragedy-authorities-identify-the-14-people-killed-in-louisville-ups-plane-crash">killed</a> in the crash were crew members on board the MD-11. Twenty-three more people on the ground were injured.
The plane was filled with more than 50,000 gallons of fuel as it departed for a long trip to Hawaii. The crash caused secondary explosions at the auto parts and recycling center.
The MD-11 plane was 34 years old and had accumulated nearly 93,000 flight hours. The last time the left pylon aft mount — the part at the center of the investigation — was visually inspected was October 28, 2021. The UPS maintenance program calls for visual inspections of the part every 72 months, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The pylon thrust links and pylon spherical bearings were lubricated just two weeks before the deadly crash, according to the preliminary report.
The MD-11 is one of the oldest planes still in use by shipping companies, such as UPS and FedEx. Both UPS and FedEx announced that they would ground their remaining MD-11s shortly after the crash in Louisville.
A more comprehensive analysis will follow Thursday’s 12-page preliminary report once the National Transportation Safety Board completes its investigation.

The business is just south of the runways at Louisville&#8217;s Muhammad Ali International Airport, where the UPS plane took off en route to Hawaii.
Video footage taken just before the crash showed the aircraft&#8217;s left wing burst into flames. The plane, which had around 50,000 gallons of fuel for the long trip to Hawaii, then exploded into a massive fireball when it crashed. National Transportation Safety Board Member Todd Inman said last week that the footage &#8220;shows the left engine detaching from the wing during the takeoff roll.&#8221;

UPS and FedEx said on Friday they have grounded their combined fleet of more than 50 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo planes following a crash in Louisville, Kentucky this week that killed at least 14 people.
A UPS MD-11 crashed late on Tuesday, erupting into a fireball moments after takeoff from Louisville&#8217;s international airport. The death toll from the crash, the cause of which is still under investigation, has risen to 14, according to a post on X by Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg on Friday.
UPS and FedEx, the world&#8217;s largest cargo carriers, said in separate statements that they grounded the aircraft &#8220;out of an abundance of caution.&#8221;
FedEx said it operates 28 MD-11s and, according to a UPS factsheet, UPS had 27 in its fleet prior to the crash.
&#8220;We made this decision proactively at the recommendation of the aircraft manufacturer,&#8221; UPS said in its statement.
Boeing, which acquired the MD-11 program through its 1997 merger with McDonnell Douglas, said in an emailed statement it recommended that UPS and FedEx suspend flight operations of the MD-11 freighter.
&#8220;This recommendation was made in an abundance of caution and we will continue coordinating with the FAA on this matter,&#8221; a Boeing spokesperson said.
Production of the MD-11 planes ended in 2000, and passenger service officially ended in 2014.
FedEx, which has a total fleet of 700 aircraft, said it was &#8220;immediately implementing contingency plans&#8221; to avoid disruptions. UPS said that its MD-11s account for only 9% of its fleet.
Still, any potential disruptions could have far-reaching consequences as FedEx and UPS are the workhorses for transferring goods around the world for major retailers like Amazon.com, Walmart, and Target, as well as for manufacturers and businesses.
UPS is the No. 1 air cargo service provider for the U.S. Postal Service, transporting Priority and other speedy mail products.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is leading the probe into the crash of the 34-year-old MD-11 freighter at the Louisville airport. The plane reached about 100 feet (30.5 meters) above ground level before plunging in flames off the runway and destroying two nearby businesses.

On Friday, U.S. safety investigators said that as a warning bell sounded in the cockpit, three UPS pilots had tried to wrestle control of the plane just before it crashed.

NTSB anticipates issuing a preliminary investigation report into the crash in about 30 days.
The last UPS cargo plane to crash was in August 2013, when an Airbus aircraft went down on a landing approach to the international airport in Birmingham, Alabama, killing both crew members.

At least 11 people are dead and others remain seriously injured or are missing after a UPS plane crashed near the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky on Tuesday evening.

Companies like UPS and FedEx primarily fly those aircraft to transport cargo. UPS issued a <a href="https://about.ups.com/us/en/newsroom/statements/ups-statement-on-aircraft-accident.html">statement</a> confirming that the crash occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m., adding that three crew members were onboard. They are believed to be dead.
Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/ups-plane-crash-louisville-airport?post-id=cmhl8u9nx00003b6n3dcwwb8e">said</a> on Wednesday that the death toll is “expected to reach 12” by the end of the day.
Multiple businesses were hit by the plane when it crashed to the ground, including a recycling plant and an auto parts shop, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/ups-plane-crash-louisville-airport">reported</a>. The crash resulted in a &#8220;secondary explosion&#8221; at the recycling plant, which contained tanks of propane and oil.
Videos posted on social media showed a massive explosion after the crash, with plumes of smoke rising into the air. Officials issued a shelter-in-place order for people within a five-mile radius of the airport after the crash. That shelter-in-place order remains in effect for those within a one-mile radius of the airport, forcing some schools in the area to cancel classes on Wednesday.
Since the plane was on a long trip to Hawaii, it was fully fueled. The fire following the crash quickly spread to nearby buildings.

The UPS plane was departing for Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Other videos circulating on social media appear to show the left wing of the MD-11 catching fire as it cruises down the runway before takeoff. One of the plane&#8217;s engines was found on the ground mostly intact, which will likely help investigators determine what led to the crash.

At Least 11 People Killed, Death Toll Expected To Rise After UPS Plane Crashes In Massive Fireball

Louisville, Kentucky, announced on Tuesday that it would take steps to remove its &#8220;sanctuary city&#8221; status, a designation imposed by the Trump administration earlier this year.
The Louisville Metro Department of Corrections will now honor immigration detainers filed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which the federal law enforcement agency uses to ensure it can gain custody over illegal aliens arrested by local authorities.
Democrat Mayor Craig Greenberg said the Trump administration informed him that the city was in violation of federal law by refusing to comply with the detainer requests. In a letter, the Justice Department warned that other jurisdictions in violation had been hit with legal action and freezes on federal funding. Greenberg <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/07/22/us-news/louisville-drops-sanctuary-city-policies-after-threat-from-trump-admin-the-stakes-are-too-high/">commented</a> on the decision to revive a policy to hold illegal aliens for up to an additional 48 hours, explaining that doing so would remove the &#8220;sanctuary city&#8221; designation.
&#8220;I have been assured by the U.S. Department of Justice that, if we reinstate the 48-hour detainers for inmates who&#8217;ve been arrested for crimes, Louisville will be taken off the federal sanctuary city list,&#8221; Greenberg <a target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
He added that the city caved to the Trump administration because “the stakes are too high,” referencing the recent deployment of military forces to Los Angeles last month that were triggered by protests over ICE raids.
“We do not want the National Guard occupying the streets of Louisville,” said Greenberg. “Cities on the sanctuary city list right now are experiencing a terrifying increase in raids by ICE, including mass raids&#8230;Just look at what’s gone on in LA and other cities.”
Greenberg did note, however, that the city’s cooperation with ICE would be limited to complying with detainer requests and that local police would not assist the federal government in immigration enforcement, as some state and local law enforcement agencies <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-trump-dhs-partners-with-100s-of-police-departments-to-supercharge-deportation-campaign">across the country</a> have done.
Attorney General Pam Bondi celebrated the city’s decision to comply with ICE detainer requests as “a major victory for the Department of Justice.”
“The city of Louisville is dropping its sanctuary city policies as a result of a strong written warning from my office,” Bondi <a href="https://x.com/AGPamBondi/status/1947659049450815554">posted</a> on X on Tuesday. “This should set an example to other cities. Instead of forcing us to sue you — which we will, without hesitation — follow the law, get rid of sanctuary policies, and work with us to fix the illegal immigration crisis.”

On Wednesday, the Trump administration’s Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division said lawsuits against the Louisville, Kentucky, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, police departments would be dismissed.
The DOJ countered the lawsuits filed by the Biden administration in the waning moments of Biden’s presidency.

The consent decree’s demands of the Louisville police are listed <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/justice-department-secures-agreement-louisville-metro-government-reform-louisville-metros">here</a>.
“The decrees would have governed many aspects of those police departments, including their management, supervision, training, performance evaluations, discipline, staffing, recruitment, and hiring,” the DOJ continued. “In short, these sweeping consent decrees would have imposed years of micromanagement of local police departments by federal courts and expensive independent monitors, and potentially hundreds of millions of dollars of compliance costs, without a legally or factually adequate basis for doing so.”
“Overbroad police consent decrees divest local control of policing from communities where it belongs, turning that power over to unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats, often with an anti-police agenda,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department&#8217;s Civil Rights Division declared. “Today, we are ending the Biden Civil Rights Division’s failed experiment of handcuffing local leaders and police departments with factually unjustified consent decrees.”
In addition, the Civil Rights Division “will also be closing its investigations into, and retracting the Biden administration’s findings of constitutional violations” on the part of the police departments of Phoenix, Arizona; Trenton, New Jersey; Memphis, Tennessee; Mount Vernon, New York; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and the Louisiana State Police.

At least two people were killed and nearly a dozen wounded when a factory in Louisville, Kentucky, was destroyed in an explosion on Tuesday.
All of the victims are employees of Givaudan Sense Colour, a factory that produces caramel color for soft drinks, ABC&#8217;s Louisville affiliate WHAS 11 <a href="https://www.whas11.com/article/news/local/2-people-dead-large-factory-explosion-louisville/417-a05bfdd5-6dd4-40cf-ab4c-11918f041b6d" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Images of the explosion&#8217;s aftermath showed that a large portion of the factory&#8217;s roof had caved as smoke rose into the air. The blast blew out windows in some houses in the Clifton neighborhood, the area that surrounds the factory,
Immediately after the explosion, city officials told people within a one-mile radius to shelter in place since hazardous materials could have leaked into the air. Around two hours later, officials said there was no longer a threat. The cause of the blast is still under investigation.

Twelve people were transported to the hospital following the explosion, and two of them who were in critical condition died overnight, according to WHAS 11.

Tuesday&#8217;s deadly explosion was not the first at the location. In 2003, when the building was owned by D.D. Williamson, one worker was killed when a &#8220;process vessel became over pressurized&#8221; and released 26,000 pounds of aqueous ammonia into the air, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/12/us/explosion-louisville-kentucky/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
“And you would think that after one explosion, it wouldn’t happen again. But here we are,” said Lorrie Hibbard, whose grandfather was killed in the 2003 accident. “All I heard was that there was an explosion at the plant again, and it just takes you right back to 2003.”

The Louisville police officer who arrested Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 golfer in the world, earlier this month released a statement after charges against Scheffler were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/charges-dropped-against-scottie-scheffler-prosecutor-says-golfers-characterization-corroborated-by-the-evidence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dropped</a> on Wednesday, standing by the version of events he described in his police report while praising the golfer for his &#8220;respect.&#8221;
The four criminal charges, including a felony assault charge, against Scheffler were dropped after Jefferson County (KY) Attorney Mike O’Connell said on Wednesday that Scheffler’s version of the incident “is corroborated by the evidence.” Louisville Metro Police Department Detective Bryan Gillis released a statement shortly after the charges were dropped, saying he wants to move past the bizarre incident as &#8220;there are more important things in the world right now,&#8221; Wave 3 News <a href="https://x.com/wardjolles/status/1795934865088528512/photo/1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. In a postscript, he also mentioned his $80 pants which he said were ruined during the incident.
&#8220;Mr. Scheffler and I agree that there will be no ill will over this going forward. Instead of giving a negative public reaction, he chose to speak with dignity, humility, and respect. My family and I appreciate that,&#8221; Gillis said.
The detective then blasted Scheffler&#8217;s attorney Steve Romines for calling Scheffler&#8217;s detainment a &#8220;false arrest.&#8221;
&#8220;It was unfortunate and disturbing to hear Steve Romines’ commentary today claiming that a ‘false arrest’ was made and for him to challenge my honesty and integrity. I’d be surprised and disappointed if Mr. Scheffler actually had any part in making those statements,&#8221; Gillis said.
&#8220;To be clear, I was drug by the car, I went to the ground, and I received visible injuries to my knees and wrist,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I’m going to recover from it, and it will be OK. This is the extent of my commentary on the incident. The reality is that there are more important things in the world right now than a back-and-forth over this. A person lost his life that day, and a family lost a loved one.&#8221;

A fatal accident involving a pedestrian stopped traffic on May 17 as Scheffler and other golfers attempted to get to the golf club for the second round of the PGA Championship. Scheffler said he was told by a police officer to drive “the opposite way with the traffic” to get into the golf club, but moments later, Gillis reportedly told Scheffler to stop his vehicle.
The golfer was accused of failing to obey Gillis&#8217; order, which allegedly resulted in the officer being dragged by Scheffler&#8217;s car. After Scheffler stopped his car, the golfer was arrested and taken to jail where he was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

After his arrest, Scheffler released a statement, saying the incident was a &#8220;big misunderstanding.&#8221; Gillis said in his statement that he hopes to move past any distractions &#8220;caused by this series of events.&#8221;
&#8220;At the end of the day, I take pride in working for the people in the community to preserve their safety. I’ve spent two decades trying to protect this city through some challenging times,&#8221; Gillis added. &#8220;I wish Scottie Scheffler and his family all the best.&#8221;
In a postscript, Gillis addressed the $80 pants that he wrote about in his police report, which became the butt of many jokes on social media.
&#8220;PS…Yes, the department has us buying freaking $80 pants,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;To those concerned, they were indeed ruined. But Scotties, it’s all good. I never would’ve guessed I’d have the most famous pair of pants in the country for a few weeks because of this. Take care and be safe.&#8221;

The 27-year-old golfer was arrested on May 17 after he attempted to drive into the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, to prepare for the second round of the PGA Championship. A fatal accident involving a pedestrian had stopped traffic, preventing Scheffler and other golfers from getting to the golf club&#8217;s entrance, but Scheffler said he was told by a police officer to drive &#8220;the opposite way with the traffic” to get into the golf club.
Moments later, another officer with the Louisville Police Department, Detective Bryan Gillis, reportedly told Scheffler to stop his vehicle. Scheffler was accused of failing to come to a stop, and police said the golfer &#8220;dragged&#8221; Gillis when he continued to drive forward. After Scheffler stopped his car, the golfer was arrested and taken to jail where he was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.
&#8220;He demanded to be let in, and proceeded forward against my directions,&#8221; Gillis <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/scottie-scheffler-arrest-body-worn-camera-policy/story?id=110504382" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in his police report. &#8220;I was dragged/knocked down by the driver. I then proceeded to arrest the driver.&#8221;
In a video following Scheffler&#8217;s arrest, the golfer told another officer that he didn&#8217;t know Gillis was a policeman, adding that his arm was &#8220;grabbed&#8221; while he was driving toward the golf club.
“So, I’m pulling in here [and] the police officer up there told me to come the opposite way with the traffic and then come in; and as I was pulling in, my window was down, an officer told me to stop,” Scheffler said. “First of all, I did not know he was a police officer. I thought he was one of the security guards that was mistaken; and as I was pulling by him, he grabbed my arm.”
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/louisville-officials-no-bodycam-footage-available-from-scottie-scheffler-arrest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Detective Gillis “did not have body cam footage turned on during the incident,” and the officer was disciplined for failing to turn his body camera on during the arrest.
Scheffler released a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/scottie-scheffler-speaks-out-after-felony-arrest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> following the incident saying that &#8220;a very chaotic situation” caused a “big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.”
“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers,” he said. “It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.”
“I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today,” Scheffler added. “Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything into perspective.”

A video posted on Facebook last week that resurfaced on Wednesday by Golf Digest Senior Writer Alex Myers shows Scottie Scheffler&#8217;s discussion with police moments after he was arrested while trying to enter the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier this month.
Scheffler was taken into custody after he attempted to drive onto the golf club property ahead of his early tee time in the second round of the PGA Championship on May 17. A fatal accident involving a pedestrian earlier in the morning, which was unrelated to Scheffler&#8217;s arrest, had shut down traffic heading into the Valhalla Golf Club.
The resurfaced footage, which appears to be taken from one of the officer&#8217;s body cameras, shows Scheffler telling an officer that he was instructed by a policeman to &#8220;come the opposite way with the traffic&#8221; to get into the golf club. Moments later, however, Louisville Police Department Detective Bryan Gillis told him to stop and &#8220;grabbed&#8221; his arm and &#8220;hit&#8221; him, according to Scheffler.
&#8220;So, I’m pulling in here [and] the police officer up there told me to come the opposite way with the traffic and then come in; and as I was pulling in, my window was down, an officer told me to stop,&#8221; Scheffler said. “First of all, I did not know he was a police officer. I thought he was one of the security guards that was mistaken; and as I was pulling by him, he grabbed my arm.”
&#8220;Stop right there,&#8221; the cop tells Scheffler in the video. &#8220;Why does it matter if he&#8217;s a security guard or a police officer if someone is telling you to stop?&#8221;
“Yes, you’re right,” Scheffler replied. “I should’ve stopped. I did get a little bit impatient because I’m quite late for my tee time; and as he was reaching in the car, he grabbed my shoulder and hit me. &#8230; It seemed to be a little over-aggressive because the entrance was open. I pulled over because I was afraid. I thought he was gonna start hitting me and I didn’t know who he was. He didn’t tell me he was a police officer. All I saw was the yellow jacket. I didn’t know what he was doing.”
The officer told Scheffler that Gillis was wearing a uniform and a brightly colored jacket that was easily recognizable.
“Also, if someone’s telling you to stop, no matter who it is, you don’t keep going,” the officer said. “So, what happened is you kept going and you took him with you while he’s a pedestrian, okay? So, you took him with your car and [dragged] him, which is not a good thing.&#8221;

&#8220;So listen to me, to make it even worse, when he asked you to get out of the car, you refused to get out of the car,” the officer added.
Scheffler told him he &#8220;was not aware&#8221; that Gillis &#8220;was a police officer.&#8221;
&#8220;I was actually looking out the window of the car to try to find a police officer,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If I knew he was a police officer, I would’ve been much less afraid, but panic kinda set in. As you can see, I’m still shaking because I was afraid I didn’t know who he was. He didn’t say, ‘Police, get out of the car.’ He just hit me with his flashlight and yelled, ‘Get out of the car.&#8217;”
The officer told the No. 1 golfer in the world that it doesn&#8217;t matter if Gillis were a traffic guard, a security guard, or a cop, saying that &#8220;if someone tells you to stop &#8230; that means you stop at that time.&#8221;
&#8220;You actually hurt [Gillis],&#8221; the officer said. &#8220;He&#8217;s got a huge scrape on his knee. He&#8217;s getting checked by EMS — a big bruise.&#8221;
