PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan revealed on Wednesday that the reason he took an abrupt leave of absence after announcing that the PGA would merge with the Saudi-backed <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/liv-golf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LIV Golf</a> was because he had anxiety over the deal.
Monahan made the admission while talking to reporters ahead of this week&#8217;s FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/38162356/jay-monahan-cites-anxiety-pga-tour-pif-deal-medical-leave" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ESPN</a>.
&#8220;I think the reality for me was that I was dealing with anxiety, which created physical and mental health issues and challenges for me,&#8221; Monahan said. &#8220;And I realized that I needed to step away and to deal with that and understand how to develop the skills to deal with that going forward.&#8221;
&#8220;To step away at that point in time was very difficult for me, but I needed to take care of myself and my family, and ultimately come back here stronger than I&#8217;ve ever been to lead the PGA Tour forward. And my family and my doctors supported me coming back.&#8221;
The merger negotiations happened in secret and only became public on June 6, 2023. There was widespread backlash to the announcement, including from some of the top players in the game, and the following week, Monahan took the leave of absence.
&#8220;I think everyone knows my nature and my nature is to always be one to run into a fight or a conflict, not run away from it,&#8221; Monahan claimed. &#8220;Because I had world-class medical care, I fully committed to the process. I was not going to come back until I was told by doctors and medical experts and my wife and my girls that I was fully supported in coming back. And that was not something that was a certainty when I stepped away.&#8221;
Monahan faced intense criticism after the deal was announced from a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/9-11-families-group-slam-pga-tour-for-merging-with-liv-golf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">9/11 families group</a> who said that they were betrayed by him.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/department-of-justice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Justice</a> (DOJ) is reportedly probing the recent decision by the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/pga" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PGA Tour</a> and Saudi Arabia’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/liv-golf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LIV Golf</a> to merge over concerns that the venture may violate U.S. antitrust laws.
The DOJ notified the PGA about the pending investigation, making the possibility of the merger uncertain and likely extending the timeframe to finalize the deal, according to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/sports/golf/pga-tour-liv-golf-merger-investigation-antitrust-28d014bf?mod=hp_lead_pos3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wall Street Journal</a>. PGA and LIV Golf, two formerly warring factions, announced the decision to merge last week.
“There’s been a lot of tension in our sport over the last couple years,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/37805785/pga-tour-liv-golf-dp-world-tour-announce-merger" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> after the merger was announced. “What we’re talking about today is coming together to unify the game of golf, and to do so under one umbrella.”
“We’ve recognized that together we can have a far greater impact on this game than we can working apart,” he continued. “The game of golf is better for what we’ve done here today.”
The golf circuits were already under DOJ scrutiny over antitrust concerns before the agreement was publicly revealed.
The merger is still in its early stages, and very few details have been settled. Even without the Justice Department’s investigation, the agreement was at risk of falling through if the partners could not come to a consensus on the details.
For the past year, the Saudi-backed circuit poached top talent in the PGA for massive sums of money, reeling in athletes such as Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka. The PGA went on an aggressive media tour, repeatedly denouncing LIV Golf for its ties to Saudi Arabia.

But circumstances do change.”
The merger announcement shocked many, with one of the most pointed criticisms coming from a charity for 9/11 victims’ families.

Professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau defended Saudi Arabia during an interview this week after it was announced that the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf would merge and form a new golf league.
9/11 Families United released a statement following the announcement slamming the PGA Tour for partnering with the Saudi-backed entity, noting that Saudi operatives played a role in facilitating the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans.
&#8220;The PGA and [PGA Commissioner Jay] Monahan appear to have become just more paid Saudi shills, taking billions of dollars to cleanse the Saudi reputation so that Americans and the world will forget how the Kingdom spent their billions of dollars before 9/11 to fund terrorism, spread their vitriolic hatred of Americans, and finance al Qaeda and the murder of our loved ones,&#8221; the group said, later adding: &#8220;Our entire 9/11 community has been betrayed by Commissioner Monahan and the PGA as it appears their concern for our loved ones was merely window-dressing in their quest for money – it was never to honor the great game of golf.”
DeChambeau was asked about those remarks during an interview on CNN earlier this week with host Kaitlan Collins.
&#8220;Well, I think we&#8217;ll never be able to repay the families back for what exactly happened just over 20 years ago,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And what happened was definitely horrible. And I think as time has gone on, 20 years has passed, and we&#8217;re in a place now where it&#8217;s time to start trying to work together to make things better together as a whole.&#8221;
DeChambeau said that he did not know what the families were feeling but that he had sympathy and respect for them and &#8220;their position, and what they believe.&#8221;
&#8220;I think as we move forward from that, we&#8217;ve got to look towards the pathway to peace, especially in forgiveness, especially if we&#8217;re trying to mend the world and make it a better place,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think this is what they&#8217;re trying to accomplish, LIV is trying to accomplish, the PIF is trying to accomplish. We&#8217;re all trying to accomplish is a better world for everybody. And a way to provide great entertainment for everybody around the world.&#8221;
When asked about the kingdom being accused of financing the murder of a Washington Post journalist several years ago and how he felt about the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund backing his reportedly $125 million contract, he responded: &#8220;Yes. I mean, look, it&#8217;s unfortunate what has happened. And that&#8217;s something I cannot necessarily speak on, as I&#8217;m a golfer. But what I can say is that what they&#8217;re trying to do, what they&#8217;re trying to work on, is to be better allies, because we are allies with them.&#8221;

The PGA Tour’s decades of dominance were challenged in June 2021 after retired golfer Greg Norman, with funding from the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF), hosted LIV’s first tournament. The PGA tour initially dismissed LIV out of hand, not allowing any golfer who participated in LIV to continue in the PGA tour.

LIV slowly began picking off some of the biggest stars in golf to join their league. The PIF gave CEO Greg Norman a reserve of $2 billion that proved to be enough to pick off stars like Phil Mickelson ($200 million), Dustin Johnson ($100 million), and Bryson DeChambeau ($100 million) without having to win or even qualify for a single tournament, leaving even more money on the table.
The PGA Tour suspended 17 golfers from the tour for participating in LIV Golf, kicking off a year of lawsuits between the two golf juggernauts. Eleven pro golfers sued the PGA for allegedly stifling competition in a monopolistic manner. However, all 11 plaintiffs left the lawsuit by May of this year after LIV got involved as a plaintiff in the lawsuit, souring the public image of the golfer’s stated principled stand against the PGA.
The PGA filed a countersuit in September, alleging that LIV golf and, importantly, the PIF had unlawfully aided the 17 golfers in violating their contracts with the PGA by offering them separate contracts to play for LIV. The implication of the PIF is an international debacle, as stars such as Phil Mickelson have desperately tried to separate the LIV organization from the Saudi theocratic monarchy, with Greg Norman saying of Saudi Arabia’s human rights violations and the murder of WaPo reporter Jamaal Khashoggi that “we’ve all made mistakes.”
With the merger, all lawsuits have been dropped, and the only remaining threat is a DOJ antitrust investigation into the PGA, which will be complicated before the merger. The PGA Tour commissioner said the deal will push golf into the future and give fans the best experience.
“Going forward, fans can be confident that we will, collectively, deliver on the promise we’ve always made — to promote competition of the best in professional golf and that we are committed to securing and driving the game’s future,” Monahan said.

This week, the Virginia-based real estate conglomerate Park Hotels &amp; Resorts announced that it would immediately stop making payments on its $725 million loan for two hotels in San Francisco — the Hilton San Francisco Union Square and Parc 55. The firm cited “record high office vacancy; concerns over street conditions; lower return to office than peer cities; and a weaker than expected citywide convention calendar through 2027” as reasons behind the decision. A Hilton Hotels spokesperson told SFGate.com that it does not plan to close the hotels and that they will remain operational under the management of Hilton Hotels &amp; Resorts. The CEO of Park Hotels &amp; Resorts added that forfeiting the two properties was “difficult but necessary.”

Financial guru and radio legend Dave Ramsey has been hit with a $150 million class-action lawsuit in connection with a failed timeshare company. The suit was first filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington in April, but reported recently.
The suit claims that Ramsey endorsed &#8220;Timeshare Exit Team&#8221; to his listeners on “The Ramsey Show,” despite growing client complaints and government flags indicating the company was likely fraudulent. The company allegedly promised to help customers terminate their timeshare contracts, which are notoriously difficult to exit. Ramsey has reportedly received more than $30 million between 2015 and 2021 to promote the now-failed timeshare exit program, which went out of business last year.

Former President Donald Trump is nothing if not prescient on some of the biggest <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/if-hes-elected-the-stock-market-will-crash-trumps-2020-warning-about-biden-comes-true" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cultural and business issues</a> of the day.
The latest example of his Nostradamus-like ability to see into the future can be found in his 2022 prediction that the upstart league LIV Golf would merge with its rival the PGA. That pronouncement came to fruition on Tuesday.
&#8220;All of those golfers that remain ‘loyal’ to the very disloyal PGA, in all of its different forms, will pay a big price when the inevitable MERGER with LIV comes, and you get nothing but a big ‘thank you’ from PGA officials who are making Millions of Dollars a year,&#8221; he <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/108668385062171695" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shared</a> on his social media app Truth Social in July 2022.

Trump was right. The PGA Tour and LIV Golf, along with DP World Tour, will now <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pga-tour-agrees-to-merger-with-saudi-backed-liv-golf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">combine</a> into one for-profit company.
As <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pga-tour-agrees-to-merger-with-saudi-backed-liv-golf">reported</a> by The Daily Wire, the PGA Tour’s decades of dominance were first challenged in June 2021 after retired golfer Greg Norman hosted LIV’s first tournament with funding from the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, or the PIF. The PGA tour initially dismissed LIV out of hand, not allowing any golfer who participated in LIV to continue in the PGA tour. But, after LIV picked off some of the biggest stars in golf to join their league, a flurry of lawsuits from both sides began.
Players who joined the league were accused of taking blood money due to Saudi Arabia&#8217;s alleged violation of human rights. LIV was accused of ruining the game, due to its raucous fan-experience atmosphere.
Now, with the merger, all lawsuits have been dropped, and the only remaining threat is a DOJ antitrust investigation into the PGA, which will be complicated by the merger. The PGA Tour commissioner said the deal will push golf into the future and give fans the best experience.

In recent months, many people have discussed the possibility of the two leagues combining forces. But when Trump first said it last summer, he was mocked for standing alone.

The PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf have signed an agreement to merge into an as-of-now unnamed company, squashing more than a year of lawsuits and attempts by both organizations to court the world’s most esteemed golfers.

“After two years of disruption and distraction, this is a historic day for the game we all know and love,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “This transformational partnership recognizes the immeasurable strength of the PGA TOUR’s history, legacy and pro-competitive model and combines with it the DP World Tour and LIV – including the team golf concept – to create an organization that will benefit golf’s players, commercial and charitable partners and fans.”
The PGA Tour’s decades of dominance were challenged in June 2021 after retired golfer Greg Norman, with funding from the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF), hosted LIV&#8217;s first tournament. The PGA tour initially dismissed LIV out of hand, not allowing any golfer who participated in LIV to continue in the PGA tour. 
LIV slowly began picking off some of the biggest stars in golf to join their league. The PIF gave CEO Greg Norman a reserve of $2 billion that proved to be enough to pick off stars like <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/06/06/phil-mickelsons-deal-with-saudi-backed-liv-is-around-200-million/">Phil Mickelson</a> ($200 million), Dustin Johnson ($100 million), and Bryson DeChambeau ($100 million) without having to win or even qualify for a single tournament, leaving even more money on the table.
The PGA Tour <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/06/09/1104000196/pga-tour-suspends-17-players-for-their-participation-in-saudi-backed-golf-tourna">suspended</a> 17 golfers from the tour for participating in LIV Golf, kicking off a year of lawsuits between the two golf juggernauts. Eleven pro-golfers sued the PGA for allegedly stifling competition in a monopolistic manner. However, all 11 plaintiffs left the lawsuit by May of this year after LIV got involved as a plaintiff in the lawsuit, souring the public image of the golfer’s stated principled stand against the PGA.

The PGA filed a countersuit in September, alleging that LIV golf and, importantly, the PIF had unlawfully aided the 17 golfers in violating their contracts with the PGA by offering them separate contracts to play for LIV. The implication of the PIF is an international debacle, as stars such as Phil Mickelson have desperately tried to separate the LIV organization from the Saudi theocratic monarchy, with Greg Norman <a href="https://www.si.com/golf/news/greg-norman-stance-on-saudi-arabia-liv-golf-mistakes">saying</a> of Saudi Arabia’s human rights violations and the murder of WaPo reporter Jamaal Khashoggi that “we’ve all made mistakes.” 
With the merger, all lawsuits have been dropped, and the only remaining threat is a DOJ antitrust investigation into the PGA, which will be complicated by the merger. The PGA Tour commissioner said the deal will push golf into the future and give fans the best experience.
“Going forward, fans can be confident that we will, collectively, deliver on the promise we’ve always made – to promote competition of the best in professional golf and that we are committed to securing and driving the game’s future,” Monahan said.

Golf superstar and newlywed Dustin Johnson opted out of answering an awkward question about his wife Paulina Gretzky during a recent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/liv-golf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LIV</a> press conference.
The former PGA star took one question during the event from golf social media company &#8220;Drunk by the Turn,&#8221; and it was a deserted island question that involved his wife, <a href="https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2022/09/20/dustin-johnson-question-about-wife-paulina-gretzky-fishing-liv-golf-press-conference" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sports Illustrated</a> reported.
&#8220;As an avid fisherman, I was just wondering … if you were stranded on an island for the rest of your life, would you rather take your fishing pole or Paulina [Gretzky] if you had one choice?&#8221; the reporter asked Johnson.
The golf star just laughed and simply said, &#8220;I can&#8217;t answer that question.&#8221;
Gretzky, the daughter of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky, and Johnson tied the knot in April after first dating in 2013, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/sports/dustin-johnson-responds-awkward-question-wife-paulina-gretzky" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> noted.

Johnson ended up finishing in second place at the LIV event in Chicago, only three strokes behind British Open champion Cameron Smith, Fox News noted.

The mass departure of golf stars led the PGA to issue a statement about those players who they said have turned their backs on the PGA Tour.

Golf Superstar And Newlywed Gets Asked Awkward Question About Wife Paulina Gretzky

Legendary professional <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/golf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">golfers</a> Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are launching a new professional golf league in partnership with the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/pga" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PGA</a> Tour as the tour faces increasing competition from Saudi-backed <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/liv-golf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LIV Golf</a>.
Woods and McIlroy&#8217;s TMRW Sports <a href="https://tglgolf.com/articles/2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> Wednesday the creation of TGL, a new “tech-infused golf league” that will feature teams of professional golfers that compete on a “custom-built venue in primetime on Monday nights.”
The high-tech league will <a href="https://tglgolf.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">consist</a> of six teams of three PGA Tour players that hit shots onto a virtual screen before moving to a “state-of-the-art short game complex.”
The new league will be comprised of 15 regular season matches starting in January 2024 followed by a playoff tournament.
The league was created with the intent of trying to attract a broader audience to the sport by reaching younger audiences.
“TGL is the next evolution within professional golf, and I am committed to helping lead it into the future,&#8221; Woods said in a statement. “Embracing technology to create this unique environment gives us the ability to move our sport into primetime on a consistent basis alongside so many of sports&#8217; biggest events. As a big sports fan myself, I&#8217;m excited about blending golf with technology and team elements common in other sports. We all know what it&#8217;s like to be in a football stadium or a basketball arena where you can watch every play, every minute of action unfold right in front of you. It&#8217;s something that inherently isn&#8217;t possible in traditional golf — and an aspect of TGL that will set it apart and appeal to a new generation of fans.”
“I have the utmost respect for the game of golf, and the TGL, while rooted in the traditions of the game, is taking a bold step into the increasingly tech-fueled future of sports,&#8221; McIlroy said. “TGL will tap into the appeal of team golf within an exciting, fan-friendly environment, comparable to sitting courtside at an NBA game. The new golf league comes as the PGA Tour competes against LIV Golf, founded by two-time major winner Greg Norman, which Woods has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tiger-woods-to-hold-meeting-with-top-pro-golfers-to-bolster-support-for-pga-over-liv" target="_blank" rel="noopener">campaigned</a> hard against.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tiger-woods" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tiger Woods</a> is scheduled to holding a meeting this week with some top professional golfers ahead of a tournament to bolster support for the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/pga" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PGA</a> as it battles against the new <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/liv-golf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LIV Golf</a> series.
ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/34406098/sources-tiger-woods-meet-group-players-bmw-championship-rally-support-pga-tour-rival-liv-series">reported</a> that the meeting will include approximately 20 top players from around the world and several other &#8220;influential&#8221; PGA players who have not left for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series.
The meeting will take place in Delaware at Wilmington Country Club ahead of the BMW Championship, which is part of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs.
&#8220;I’m hearing tomorrow’s PGA Tour player meeting regarding LIV is going to be a banger,&#8221; golf reporter Alan Shipnuck <a href="https://twitter.com/AlanShipnuck/status/1559325194061115392">tweeted</a>. &#8220;Supposedly everything is on the table, from major championship boycotts to Monahan’s future to a larger compromise. And Tiger M.F. Woods is expected to fly in to provide counsel/bully/cajole.&#8221;
Woods has spoken out against LIV Golf and Greg Norman, who leads the new golf tour, <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/07/12/tiger-woods-unloads-on-greg-norman-liv-golf-ahead-of-2022-british-open/">saying</a> earlier this summer that it was the right thing for the PGA to disinvite Norman to the 150th British Open at St. Andrews.
&#8220;Greg has done some things that I don’t think is in the best interest of our game, and we’re coming back to probably the most historic and traditional place in our sport,&#8221; Woods said. &#8220;I know Greg tried to do this back in the early ’90s. It didn’t work then, and he’s trying to make it work now. I still don’t see how that’s in the best interests of the game. I know what the PGA Tour stands for and what we have done and what the Tour has given us — the ability to chase after our careers and to earn what we get and the trophies we have been able to play for and the history that has been a part of this game.&#8221;
Woods slammed the players who left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf, saying that they have turned their backs on the tours that helped create them.
&#8220;The players who have chosen to go to LIV and to play there, I disagree with it,” Woods said. “I think that what they’ve done is they’ve turned their back on what has allowed them to get to this position. Some players have never got a chance to even experience it — they’ve gone right from the amateur ranks right into that organization and never really got a chance to play out here and what it feels like to play a Tour schedule or to play in some big events.&#8221;
&#8220;And, who knows what’s going to happen in the near future with world-ranking points, the criteria for entering major championships? The governing bodies are going to have to figure that out. Some of these players may not ever get a chance to play in major championships,&#8221; Woods continued. &#8220;That is a possibility that some players will never, ever get a chance to play in a major championship, never get a chance to experience this right here, walk down the fairways at Augusta National. That, to me, I just don’t understand it.&#8221;

The tour has spent nine-figure sums luring PGA stars like Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, and others to play in its pro series. In addition to dangling huge purses for match competitions, the new tour is offering signing fees, including a reported $125 million to Johnson, and likely more for Mickelson. The PGA has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pga-tour-to-punish-players-jumping-to-saudi-backed-liv-tournament">tried to stop the exodus</a>, and made clear players who defect won’t necessarily be welcome back.
The 15-time major champion Woods has not been the same since a devastating automobile accident, but his popularity still would have made him the upstart tour’s biggest prize. The LIV Golf Invitational Series was launched this year through a $300 million investment in the Asian Tour. Earlier this week, LIV Golf rolled out plans to expand in 2023 to 14 events, with 48 golfers competing for an unprecedented $405 million in purses.
Former President Trump hosted a LIV tournament at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, last week and has been a supporter of the tour despite <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/9-11-families-rip-trump-for-hosting-saudi-backed-golf-tournaments-at-his-courses">criticism from 9/11 families and other critics</a> of the Kingdom&#8217;s abysmal human rights record.
“I think LIV has been a great thing for Saudi Arabia, for the image of Saudi Arabia,” Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/charles-barkley-slams-door-on-new-role-in-saudi-sponsored-golf-league">told</a> The Wall Street Journal. “I think it’s going to be an incredible investment from that standpoint, and that’s more valuable than lots of other things because you can’t buy that — even with billions of dollars.”
