WASHINGTON—Steve Schmidt, a leading anti-Trump activist and co-founder of The Lincoln Project, blamed President Donald Trump for &#8220;poisoning the rhetoric in America&#8221; minutes after a gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents&#8217; Dinner.
The Daily Wire approached Schmidt at Substack&#8217;s New Media Party, an alternative to the Correspondents&#8217; Dinner held around the corner from the White House. Moments before, Cole Thomas Allen, a 31-year-old engineer from California, opened fire at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where President Trump and senior government officials were gathered for the White House Correspondents&#8217; Dinner.

Asked for his reaction to the shooting, Schmidt initially said &#8220;Pretty terrible. Don&#8217;t know a lot of details yet.&#8221; The Daily Wire then asked Schmidt if the protesters outside the dinner, and the prominent commentators urging attendees to somehow disrupt the event, bore any responsibility for inspiring the shooter.
&#8220;No,&#8221; Schmidt deadpanned.
The Daily Wire then reminded Schmidt about the two prior attempts on Trump&#8217;s life, including the 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a would-be assassin struck Trump and killed a bystander. Schmidt blamed the victim.
&#8220;There&#8217;s one person beyond and above all others who&#8217;s responsible for poisoning the rhetoric in America, and that guy&#8217;s name is Donald Trump,&#8221; Schmidt said.

Asked if he was blaming the president for the repeated attempts on his life, Schmidt said no — and then resumed criticizing the president.
&#8220;He&#8217;s a poisonous, venomous man,&#8221; Schmidt said. &#8220;He&#8217;s an insurrectionist, the foremost domestic enemy of the Constitution in American history. He is a vile and disgusting man, a convicted sex predator, and likely a pedophile. And tragically, he&#8217;s President of the United States, so we&#8217;ll have to endure through it.&#8221;
Schmidt, a former Republican political operative best known for his work on John McCain&#8217;s 2008 presidential campaign, has a history of making controversial statements shortly after presidential assassination attempts. Just two days after the Butler shooting, Schmidt <a href="https://freebeacon.com/media/days-after-trump-assassination-attempt-scripps-news-contributor-steve-schmidt-pens-rnc-analysis-rife-with-nazi-comparisons/">penned a column</a> in which he compared the Republican National Convention to a Nazi rally in which he said that Trump, like his would-be assassin, was driven by &#8220;violence and a hatred for democracy.&#8221;
Schmidt founded The Lincoln Project with fellow anti-Trump Republican staffers Rick Wilson and John Weaver in 2019. Schmidt left the group in 2021 in the wake of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/steve-schmidt-resigns-from-the-lincoln-project-releases-statement-claiming-he-was-molested-at-13">revelations</a> that Weaver had preyed on numerous young men, including one as young as 14. The Lincoln Project enjoyed a brief moment of celebrity among Trump critics, but was quickly marred by scandal.
Staffers left the group en masse following the reports on Weaver, and The Lincoln Project reportedly spent most of the money it raised on consultants. In 2022, Schmidt&#8217;s ex-wife petitioned a court to force him to pay her <a href="https://freebeacon.com/latest-news/steve-schmidts-ex-wife-says-he-owes-her-over-100k-and-wants-him-jailed-for-contempt/">$100,000</a> she claimed she was owed.
Angela Schmidt also petitioned a court for a restraining order against the MS NOW contributor, who on Saturday evening was wearing a bright navy suit to a black tie event.

MSNBC guest Tara Setmayer launched a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/uncle-tim-trends-on-twitter-after-tim-scotts-rebuttal-to-bidens-sotu-address" target="_blank" rel="noopener">racially-charged attack</a> at Senator <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tim-scott" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tim Scott</a> (R-SC), who is black, claiming that his presidential run would go nowhere and referring to him as a &#8220;racial pacifier&#8221; and a &#8220;racial security blanket.&#8221;
Setmayer, a senior adviser with the Lincoln Project, joined MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart on his &#8220;Saturday Show&#8221; — and she weighed in on the recent <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/video/sen-tim-scott-speaks-to-nbc-news-after-launching-2024-presidential-exploratory-committee-170310725719" target="_blank" rel="noopener">soft launch</a> of Scott&#8217;s 2024 presidential campaign.
&#8220;I find Senator Scott fascinating, a black Republican who isn’t too shy in talking about race, but whose views on race can be problematic both within the GOP and in the general public.&#8221; Capehart began, asking, &#8220;So, I mean, am I giving him too much credit?&#8221;
&#8220;Listen, Tim Scott, bless his heart, is trying to make a name for himself now, taking advantage of the fact that Republicans every election cycle need a racial pacifier,&#8221; Setmayer said. &#8220;He’s their racial security blanket in the race.&#8221;
Setmayer immediately pivoted to former President Donald Trump, claiming that Republicans had failed to &#8220;diversify the tent&#8221; and adding, &#8220;They went in the complete opposite direction. But the one constant has been good ole Senator Tim Scott, the lone black Republican in the Senate.&#8221;
She went on to say that she respected Senator Scott&#8217;s life story, but not the fact that he had supported Trump and voted to acquit him after the January 6th-related impeachment.
&#8220;That I have no respect for. None whatsoever. I have no respect for someone that cannot take a firm position on where he stands on our democracy. On Donald Trump’s existential threat to it,&#8221; Setmayer continued. &#8220;I mean, the 1990s called and they want their campaign video back. There’s nothing extraordinary about what Tim Scott is doing. I mean, he’s a big snooze and he has no chance. None whatsoever. Zip, zero.&#8221;
Following some backlash over the racially-charged nature of her comments, Setmayer complained about all the &#8220;hate-filled msgs&#8221; that were flooding her inbox and doubled down on her comments, claiming the GOP had been &#8220;TRIGGERED.&#8221;

Steve Schmidt, co-founder of the scandal-plagued <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/lincoln-project">Lincoln Project</a>, unleashed a late-night Twitter attack on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/meghan-mccain">Meghan McCain</a> Saturday, describing her as a &#8220;rotten person&#8221; and blasting her dad for cozying up to Russian operatives in his 2008 run for president.
In a <a href="https://twitter.com/SteveSchmidtSES/status/1523108447088128001">16-part thread</a>, the former campaign manager for Sen. John McCain unleashes on the late senator&#8217;s daughter, calling her &#8220;the singularly most rotten person I have ever met.&#8221; Schmidt claims the senator&#8217;s presidential campaign was cleaved by two factions, including one led by Paul Manafort, who he said was in the pocket of Russian President Vladimir Putin via Moscow&#8217;s ally, then Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.
&#8220;Your Father tolerated his campaign chairman being in business and working for Putin through His association with Yanukovych,&#8221; Schmidt wrote. &#8220;SAME AS TRUMP.
&#8220;The story of American corruption in Ukraine starts here. It starts in John McCain&#8217;s operation, not Trump&#8217;s,&#8221; Schmidt added in the tweetstorm.
The other faction in the McCain campaign, according to Schmidt, was led by John Weaver, the longtime McCain aide who co-founded The Lincoln Project and then left in disgrace amid allegations he sexually harassed more than 20 young men, many of whom worked for the PAC. Weaver, according to Schmidt, was horrified that McCain would allow Russian operatives to influence his campaign.

As McCain&#8217;s bid for the 2008 GOP nomination foundered, Schmidt said he was summoned to right the ship. After siding with Weaver, what Schmidt labeled &#8220;the pro-democracy faction&#8221; steered McCain to the nomination, setting him up to lose to Barack Obama.
In addition to painting himself as the campaign&#8217;s savior, Schmidt absolves himself of any blame associated with the choice of Sarah Palin as McCain&#8217;s running mate. That, he blamed on Manafort, the longtime campaign operative who would later briefly serve as Donald Trump&#8217;s campaign chairman in 2016.
&#8220;Putin’s guy, the one who was Victor Yanukovich’s henchman was in charge of ALL of the DUE DILIGENCE around Palin,&#8221; Schmidt wrote.&#8221; I wasn’t.&#8221;
In a follow-up thread, Schmidt renewed his attack on Meghan McCain by accusing her of leaking the names of her father&#8217;s associates who were not invited to his funeral.
&#8220;<a href="https://twitter.com/MeghanMcCain">@MeghanMcCain</a> I want you to know that was the greatest act of cruelty I ever experienced,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;It was for all of us that you targeted. It was humiliating and shaming.&#8221;
McCain had not responded on Twitter, but the attack appears to have been sparked by her <a href="https://twitter.com/SteveSchmidtSES/status/1523066929883205632?s=20&amp;t=wHEzrV78x340s1A7dSwdCA">like of a Twitter reply</a> baselessly claiming that Schmidt had been &#8220;running a pedo racket,&#8221; as well as years of bad blood.

The name-calling session began as Wilson, co-founder of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-gop-needs-to-be-burned-down-to-the-ground-according-to-msnbcs-republican-commentator">anti-Republican</a> organization beset by allegations that <a href="https://therightswriter.com/2015/06/john-kasich-just-hired-a-strategist-who-has-waged-war-on-conservative-christians/">another of its co-founders</a> <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/deplorable-and-predatory-behavior-the-lincoln-project-condemns-cofounder-after-nyt-reports-he-allegedly-sexually-harassed-14-year-old-boy">sexually harassed young males</a>, accused “Republican governors,” like Florida’s Ron DeSantis and Texas’ Greg Abbott , of playing “stupid games” by allowing Americans <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/153-employees-at-houston-hospital-who-refused-covid-19-vaccine-have-been-fired-or-quit-report">fired</a> for refusing to obey their employers’ vaccine mandates to collect unemployment benefits.
He then broadened his attacks to Americans who, he said, “didn’t take the responsible adult human step to get vaccinated.”
“I missed that part when I was a young man reading <a href="https://therightswriter.com/2004/07/farewell-chairman-bill/">[William F.] Buckley [Jr.]</a>, and <a href="https://mises.org/library/road-serfdom-0">[Friedrich von] Hayek</a> and <a href="https://kirkcenter.org/">[Russell] Kirk</a> and all of the conservative greats — I missed the part about being a dumb ass when it comes to trying to save people’s lives,” Wilson said.
Reid laughed loudly at Wilson’s insult of Red State Americans.
Later in the show, Reid speculated about cordoning off Republicans’ stupidity from the rest of the nation in a macabre science experiment.
“It’s almost like if we had a dome over the United States, there’d be part of it that is like a dumb ass-tuary, right, where people are living in there, killing their own constituents, getting their own constituents sick, willing to let people die,” Reid said.
Wilson then burst out laughing.
“Is there any way to crack that little dumb ass-tuary and let some people out, or are they just going to stay in there, get sick, and maybe die?” she asked.
Wilson replied by calling Republican-led states like Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama — as well as Louisiana, which is governed by a <a href="https://www.democratsforlife.org/">pro-life Democrat</a> — “basically Darwin’s waiting room. These people are gonna either decide they’re going to get vaccinated, or they’re going to continue to watch their friends and neighbors and their family members die off.”
He added they had been misled by Fox News, which he claimed was “an outright propaganda network against vaccination for months and months and months,” although the network produced public service announcements encouraging its viewers to get vaccinated. “Pain is the only teacher in politics, so you’re going to see states where people die off,” Wilson said.
Reid concluded the segment by playing the race card. “It’s their own voters, but I guess they figure there will be enough of them left to, like, watch the polls and intimidate black voters and make sure they can’t vote, and they figure that’s all they need,” she said.
The decision to call half of the electorate ignorant seemed like a flashback to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sorry-mr-president-10-reasons-don-lemon-is-not-one-of-the-most-informed-journalists-in-the-country">last January</a>, when Wilson and New York Times author Wajahat Ali joined CNN host Don Lemon to say that Trump voters are backwoods imbeciles who don’t know anything about “yer geography, and yer spellin’, and yer math, and yer readin’.” As Wilson and Ali poured on the insults, Lemon laughed until he cried, dabbing tears from his eyes. The Republican National Committee found the episode so condescending and elitist that they turned the segment into a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-watch-gop-launches-campaign-ad-fundraiser-off-cnns-don-lemon-mocking-trump-supporters">campaign ad</a>.

The Left’s decision to insult much of the country’s electorate harkens back to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 faux pas of revealing that she considered “half” of future President Donald Trump’s supporters “deplorables” and “irredeemable.”
Another moment of déjà vu came when Reid asked Dr. Anthony Fauci whether the Omicron variant or a successor mutation might become too impossible for vaccines to restrain — and had Dr. Fauci publicly rebuff her a second time.
“My team is sick of me saying this, but I’ve been likening the pandemic, this virus to like the alien in [the movie] &#8216;Aliens.&#8217; Its whole goal is to jump into different people and mutate into different kinds of aliens,” she said. “At some point, isn’t it true this thing is going to mutate to a kind of virus that we can’t stop with any vaccine or any treatment?&#8221;
“No,” replied Dr. Fauci flatly. “That would be really highly unlikely, Joy.”

On Monday, Lincoln Project co-founder Steve Schmidt attacked Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and brought up Cruz’s children after Cruz ripped the media for using the famed Sesame Street character Big Bird to sell the Biden administration’s desire to get small children vaccinated for COVID-19. Schmidt said, “If Ted Cruz had kids that age, the chances that they would be unvaccinated are exactly zero. Zero.”
Cruz fired back, “The pedophiles at @ProjectLincoln need to stop talking about my children.”
Schmidt was prompted by leftist MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace, who mocked Cruz, saying, “This is one place that I had hoped so desperately would stay sort of free from the politics. It would appear Ted Cruz can’t help himself.”
“Can’t help himself,” Schmidt repeated. “And if Ted Cruz had kids that age, the chances that they would be unvaccinated are exactly zero. Zero. So, this is another moment of just abject stupidity from a United States senator from one of the nation’s mega-states in a really serious moment, a really serious time for the country.”

Cruz’s reference to pedophiles was likely with regard to Schmidt&#8217;s fellow Lincoln Project co-founder John Weaver, who allegedly exhibited sexually predatory behavior toward young men in exchange for career advancement, according to <a href="https://www.axios.com/lincoln-project-co-founder-resigns-ad554687-f2d1-4b7c-ac0c-5aa555fb312f.html">Axios</a>. One of the boys to whom Weaver reportedly spoke was only 14 years old at the time, according to one of the 21 alleged victims interviewed by <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/31/us/politics/john-weaver-lincoln-project-harassment.html">The New York Times</a>.

Despite a stinging national backlash and a general consensus that the stunt backfired, the Lincoln Project has defended its decision to have a group of activists dressed as tiki-torch-bearing white nationalists proclaim their support for Republican Glenn Youngkin, the frontrunner in the Virginia governor’s race.
On Friday, CNN’s Chris Cuomo asked Stuart Stevens, an adviser to the &#8216;Never Trump&#8217; organization, if the move was a dirty trick or hypocritical.
“No,” said Stevens. “Every day, I hear people pleading with the Lincoln Project to help show Democrats how to win, how to play hardball.”
In fact, a 2020 study conducted by the left-wing PAC Priorities USA found that the Lincoln Project’s ads <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-hottest-campaign-ads-on-twitter-didnt-really-work-study">did virtually nothing</a> to convince swing state voters to support Joe Biden.
In its latest controversial move, young people wearing clothes similar to those worn by Alt-Right activists at the “Unite the Right” rally showed up at a Youngkin campaign event in Charlottesville and said, “We’re all in for Glenn!” The 2017 rally ended in the death of 32-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/heather-heyers-mother-biden-didnt-tell-me-he-was-james-barrett">Heather Heyer</a>. As The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/youngkin-blames-dems-for-tiki-torch-activists-outside-campaign-bus-they-work-for-terry-mcauliffe">reported</a>:

The Lincoln Project, which began as a group of Never Trump Republicans declaring themselves true conservatives, admitted responsibility later in the day.
Although the action did not appear to help McAuliffe, the Lincoln Project threatened to repeat it again before Tuesday’s gubernatorial election.
“Today’s demonstration was our way of reminding Virginians what happened in Charlottesville four years ago, the Republican Party’s embrace of those values, and Glenn Youngkin’s failure to condemn it,” the organization said in a <a href="https://lincolnproject.us/statement-from-the-lincoln-project-5/">statement</a> released on Friday. “If [Youngkin] will denounce Trump’s assertion that the Charlottesville rioters possessed ‘very fine’ qualities, we’ll withdraw the tiki torches. Until then, we’ll be back.”
On Friday night, Stevens deflected questions about the propriety of the action and failed to address whether he intended to mislead Virginia voters into thinking that Charlottesville activists actually back Youngkin.
“The question here is it&#8217;s not about some guys who showed up at a rally,” Stevens told Cuomo. “It&#8217;s, ‘Why hasn&#8217;t Glenn Youngkin denounced Donald Trump, for saying that there were good people on both sides’” of the Charlottesville violence.
“No, look, I hear the question,” Cuomo responded. “It&#8217;s a legitimate one.” He then turned to Democratic strategist James Carville, who proclaimed, “I kind of agree with what Stuart said. It was to illustrate a point that Youngkin has not denounced Trump saying ‘There were fine people on both sides’  in Charlottesville.”

The urban legend that President Trump praised neo-Nazis as “very fine people” turns up repeatedly, although it has been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-never-called-neo-nazis-fine-people-michael-j-knowles">debunked numerous times</a>. The day of the deadly rally, Trump tweeted, “We ALL must be united &amp; condemn all that hate stands for. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. Lets [sic] come together as one!” During off-the-cuff remarks after the event, Trump specified that when he made positive remarks about some people who oppose toppling historical statues, “I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the White nationalists, because they should be condemned totally.”

Polls show Youngkin pulling ahead of McAuliffe after the former governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-terry-mcauliffe-i-dont-think-parents-should-be-telling-schools-what-they-should-teach">exclaimed</a> during a debate, “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.” An increasingly frazzled McAuliffe has tried to regain his momentum, having President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris campaign for him. One of the nation’s largest cable providers has refused to broadcast an ad from an anti-Republican PAC that blames COVID-19 deaths on Fox News — and calls on providers to drop the top-rated cable news network from their line-up.
Comcast has again declined to air a paid advertisement from The Lincoln Project, the scandal-plagued megadonor PAC founded by jilted GOP strategists.
“Is Rupert Murdoch trying to kill Americans?” the latest rejected spot <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIl_rf4v-YY">begins</a>. “The Americans dying from COVID are almost all not vaccinated.”
The ad accuses Fox News of “pushing anti-vax hysteria” — before playing a clip of Laura Ingraham <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cnn-is-fox-news-killing-people">opposing</a> the Biden administration’s proposal to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/internet-erupts-after-biden-psaki-push-door-to-door-plan-targeting-unvaccinated-people">send government employees door-to-door</a> asking Americans if they have been vaccinated.
“Fox News is helping kill Americans. Call your local television provider and tell them to drop Fox News,” the narrator says.
“It’s not about politics,” the ad concludes. “It’s about life and death.”
The Lincoln Project’s timing could scarcely have been worse, as Fox News Channel <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/media/564210-fox-news-airs-psa-telling-viewers-get-the-vaccine">rolled out</a> a PSA asking Americans to get vaccinated. Prime time staple Sean Hannity and “Fox and Friends” co-host Steve Doocy also encouraged viewers of the top-rated cable news network to do the research and take the COVID-19 vaccine.
Comcast turned down the ad and its revenue, telling The Lincoln Project that the spot violates the company’s advertising guidelines. “An advertisement may be rejected if it is merely an attack of a personal nature, a direct attack on an individual business, or comment on a private dispute,” said the guidelines, which the Project quoted in a dyspeptic <a href="https://hillreporter.com/watch-statement-from-the-lincoln-project-regarding-comcasts-refusal-to-air-new-ad-holding-fox-news-accountable-for-promoting-vaccine-hesitancy-107567">press release</a>. The Project noted that “Comcast has repeatedly rejected Lincoln Project ads,” such as an extreme 60-second ad <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed8HFawtEIE">criticizing Toyota</a> for making donations to the Republican Party.
“Comcast is one of the main sources of Fox News’ revenue and our ad called on Americans to ask their cable carriers to drop the propaganda network,” The Lincoln Project said in a <a href="https://hillreporter.com/watch-statement-from-the-lincoln-project-regarding-comcasts-refusal-to-air-new-ad-holding-fox-news-accountable-for-promoting-vaccine-hesitancy-107567">statement</a> after the rejection. “Comcast has made one thing clear: Their bottom line comes before anything else; it comes before democracy; and in this case, it comes before the health and safety of the American people.”
That sounds ironic, as The Lincoln Project has been accused of the same charges. Right-populist journalist Ryan Girdusky revealed at <a href="https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/the-lincoln-projects-predator/">The American Conservative</a> that Lincoln Project co-founder <a href="https://therightswriter.com/2015/06/john-kasich-just-hired-a-strategist-who-has-waged-war-on-conservative-christians/">John Weaver</a> had long used his position to allegedly pressure young, male aides for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/deplorable-and-predatory-behavior-the-lincoln-project-condemns-cofounder-after-nyt-reports-he-allegedly-sexually-harassed-14-year-old-boy">sexual favors</a>.
The Lincoln Project promptly threw Weaver under the bus, saying, “John Weaver led a secret life that was built on a foundation of deception at every level. He is a predator, a liar, and an abuser.” The project said it had been a victim of Weaver’s predatory actions, as well. “Like so many, we have been betrayed and deceived by John Weaver.”
Although allegations about Weaver’s sexual harassment go back at least 21 years, his Lincoln Project was able to recruit some of the most prestigious consultants in the Republican Party — who profited handsomely from their association with the “Never Trump” PAC. As The Daily Wire’s Emily Zanotti noted, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/report-anti-trump-lincoln-project-facing-questions-over-spending-practices">$50 million</a> of the $90 million in donations The Lincoln Project has raised since its formation went to firms run by the group’s leaders. The grift seemed so transparent that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said The Lincoln Project seemed to exist deep in “<a href="https://nypost.com/2020/11/07/aoc-slams-lincoln-project-def-in-scam-territory/">scam territory</a>.” Were Lincoln Project members putting their own bottom line before the “safety of the American people”?
Comcast, which owns MSNBC, has benefited The Lincoln Project in other ways; its leaders have been mainstays on the left-wing network, which frequently airs their ads for free as part of its news and commentary programs. Last month, Brian Williams broadcast a Lincoln Project ad titled “Who is Antifa?” that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/msnbcs-brian-williams-equates-antifa-with-d-day-veterans">equated</a> violent anarchist rioters with World War II veterans on D-Day.
With former President Donald Trump temporarily out of the public focus, the Left’s focus has largely shifted to Fox News, especially the network’s coverage of the novel coronavirus global pandemic. CNN’s Dana Bash has asked whether Fox News is killing people, and Brian Stelter dedicates most of his show, “Reliable Sources,” to bashing his more successful competitor.
Denying Americans the choice to watch Fox News would banish the most effective center-right network on television.

Comcast Refuses To Let Lincoln Project Grifters Air Anti-Fox News Commercial

One of MSNBC’s rare Republican contributors has said that the best way to bolster “democracy” is to “burn down” the Republican Party, because it has become the home of “the wackiest wackies” and “neo-fascists.” The Republican, a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/lincoln-project">Lincoln Project</a> <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-01-11/del-percio-says-it-is-highly-unlikely-trump-to-be-convicted/13046598">senior adviser</a> and former adviser to Andrew Cuomo, offered herself as one of the people who could help rebuild the GOP after its four-year grassroots interregnum.
Republican strategist Susan Del Percio petitioned for the political arson during a special, two-hour edition of “The ReidOut” Monday evening.
Del Percio said, “I have been looking for a new word for Trumpism, because I hate it,” and the torrent of extremism “goes deeper than just Donald Trump within the Republican Party.”
“Forget Trumpism. It’s neofascism. That’s what the grassroots of the party looks like right now,” Del Percio continued.
Del Percio zinged Texas gubernatorial hopeful <a href="http://therightswriter.com/2004/01/frontpage-magazines-2003-man-of-the-year-col-allen-b-west/">Allen West</a>, whom she appeared to confuse with the late “Batman” star <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLZQ3OLEJWE">Adam West</a>, predicting that “the wackiest wackies are going to win the Republican primary, but they’re going to lose in general elections. And that may not just help Democrats, but it will help the Republican Party in a way, because it will burn it down — maybe not in 2022 or 2024. But after enough losses, we can see maybe normal returning, because those neofascists will be out of the party.”
Host Joy Reid told Del Percio, “I talk to Republicans like you all the time,” and they tell her that, since 2016, the GOP is “burning, like it’s gone straight to Hell, and no one seems to have an answer as to how you pull it back.”
“Do you have ideas on how to pull it back to at least sanity, where we’re just fighting about tax cuts again?” she asked.
“It needs to burn down,” Del Percio repeated. “It literally needs to be demolished before you can go in and build it up again.”
MSNBC and CNN make little pretense of equal coverage, but they sometimes feature registered Republicans who take a harder line against the GOP than the most partisan Democratic operative. Del Percio is such a Republican.
Del Percio, who led unsuccessful Republican campaigns for <a href="https://www.lohud.com/story/news/politics/politics-on-hudson/0001/01/01/cuomo-adds-gop-operative-special-adviser/6300047/">governor</a> of New York and <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2013/01/gop-consultant-susan-del-percio-on-board-as-joe-lhota-mulls-2013-mayoral-run">mayor</a> of New York City, has played both sides of the aisle. In March 2014, she served as a <a href="https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-appoints-susan-del-percio-serve-special-advisor">special adviser</a> to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D), earning a state salary of <a href="https://www.politico.com/states/new-york/albany/story/2014/03/cuomo-adds-gop-operative-as-special-advisor-011528">$160,000</a>, but left the administration the following January. “Her hiring at the time was seen as a smart tactical move by Cuomo to keep her from being swept up in an election year by his GOP opponent,” <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/goper-susan-del-percio-departing-cuomo-administration-blog-entry-1.2074056">reported</a> the New York Daily News.
Del Percio has continued to present herself as an Andrew Cuomo Republican, penning an NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/coronavirus-trump-s-failures-have-presidentcuomo-trending-s-fantasy-ncna1172541?cid=sm_npd_ms_fb_ma">op-ed</a> extolling his leadership during the COVID-19 outbreak.
“Andrew Cuomo is no longer just New York&#8217;s governor — he is now America&#8217;s governor,” she wrote. “Thanks to his excellent leadership during the overwhelming health crisis caused by the coronavirus, Cuomo has provided much-needed comfort and information to the entire country. He has been so effective and has presented such a stark contrast with the vacuum of leadership in the White House that now some people are saying he should be America&#8217;s president.”
The only reason Cuomo should not enter the presidential primaries, Del Percio concluded, is that New Yorkers like herself “are not willing to trade him. He belongs to New York, and we need him to stay here.”
Del Percio went on to become a special adviser to the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/steve-schmidt-resigns-from-the-lincoln-project-releases-statement-claiming-he-was-molested-at-13">scandal-plagued</a> Lincoln Project. She told Reid that Democrats tell her, “Please stay a Republican,” because the party will need leaders to turn the GOP away from the concerns that animate its base voters once they are routed. “That also means there has to be people willing to keep their Republican credentials to be there when it’s time to build it up.”
Reid mentioned none of Del Percio’s associations with unsavory political movements to her viewers, instead misinforming her audience that Allen West “has suggested black communities were stronger and better during segregation, so, he’s anti-Dr. [Martin Luther] King [Jr.].” Del Percio added that West believes in “secession.”
West has long noted that black families had a lower out-of-wedlock birthrate before the Great Society and the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s — a trend <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/research/an-analysis-of-out-of-wedlock-births-in-the-united-states/">observed</a> by current Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
“When I was born in 1961, between 75 to 77 percent of the households had two parents,” West has said. “Today, it&#8217;s at 24 percent, and you can trace that right back to a failed policy from Lyndon Johnson, where the government provided checks to women who had children out of wedlock as long as they did not have a man in the home.” West <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh34JJskCt8">told</a> Young America’s Foundation in April, “The black family is the reason why the black community survived through slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, all of these horrible things.”
West has also said he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/texas-gop-chair-denies-calling-for-secession-the-real-perpetrators-are-states-who-broke-election-law">never endorsed secession</a>, saying his political opponents twisted his words.

The GOP ‘Needs To Be Burned Down To The Ground’ According To MSNBC’s ‘Republican’ Commentator

On the eve of the 77th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, MSNBC aired an ad from The Lincoln Project that called the soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy members of “Antifa” — the left-wing group responsible for mass political violence nationwide.
Brian Williams closed Friday’s edition of “The 11th Hour” by showing a portion of the ad, which opens by asking, “Who is Antifa?”
Williams presented the video as a patriotic homage to the Greatest Generation.“Last thing before we go tonight, an important anniversary [is] coming up this weekend,” Williams said. “We hope you can take a moment and remember it.”
He went on to call Operation Overlord “beyond bold; it was outlandish. Over 150,000 men invad[ed] the French coastline under withering German fire to begin their march across Europe, where they would go on to win World War II 336 days later.”
“While others will debate whether or not we could possibly mount such a thing today as broken as we are, there was a time when we saved the world from tyranny and fascism,” Williams continued. “If it wasn&#8217;t our finest hour, it&#8217;s hard to say what was. And the folks at The Lincoln Project are out with a reminder to all.”
A portion of the ad transcript praised by Williams reads as follows:

They took down Nazi machine gun nests, tore apart the Third Reich strongholds, liberated concentration camps, liberated France, Italy, Belgium, Holland, anywhere Antifa saw fascism they fearlessly, and relentlessly, annihilated it. Fascism was defeated because of patriots like these — proud Americans who knew that the fight against fascists was not simply a battle between opposing nations, it was a war against humanity, a war that isn’t nice but cannot be lost. A war we still fight today.</blockquote>
As the narrator says the word “today,” the ad abruptly switches to footage of President Donald Trump.
The ad then returns to scenes from liberated France and Germany as the narrator intones, “Anti-fascism: It’s not a cable news talking point. It’s an American ideal that should be memorialized, because it was paid for in blood.”
The ad closes with a picture of a U.S. military cemetery — and, of course, a link to donate to the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/deplorable-and-predatory-behavior-the-lincoln-project-condemns-cofounder-after-nyt-reports-he-allegedly-sexually-harassed-14-year-old-boy">scandal-plagued Lincoln Project</a>.

The attempt to whitewash or sanitize Antifa, a violent group of anarchist street thugs, is not exactly new. Last year, National Public Radio’s national political correspondent, Mara Liasson, retweeted a map of the D-Day invasion with the <a href="https://twitter.com/maraliasson/status/1269390712291893248">words</a>, “Biggest antifa rally in history.”
After the violent clashes in Charlottesville, CNN’s Don Lemon defended Antifa on the basis of its name, rather than its actions. “It says it right in the name: Antifa. Anti-fascism,” he <a href="https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2018/08/28/don_lemon_defends_antifa_no_organization_is_perfect.html">said</a>. “No organization’s perfect. There was some violence. No one condones violence, but there were different reasons for Antifa and for these neo-Nazis to be there.”
Last month W. Kamau Bell, host of CNN’s “United Shades of America,” interviewed two members of Antifa in Portland and seemingly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cnn-host-praises-antifa-violence-yes-people-get-hurt">excused their violence</a>. “Look, this fighting for democracy and against fascism thing has always been a messy business,” he said. “And, yes, people get hurt, property gets damaged, and things get confusing.”
When those on the Left aren’t glorifying Antifa, they’re busy denying its existence. At the first presidential debate last October, Joe Biden <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cnn-claims-biden-debate-largely-accurate-here-are-14-false-claims-by-biden">asserted</a> that “Antifa is an idea, not an organization.”
In reality, Antifa exists in loosely organized groups, and “their methods are often violent,” <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2017/08/18/us/unmasking-antifa-anti-fascists-hard-left/index.html">according</a> to CNN. “Antifa leaders admit they&#8217;re willing to physically attack anyone who … condones racism,” as Antifa defines it.
Of course, violently attacking people for their thoughts are tactics employed by the actual fascists. The brown shirts physically <a href="https://fcit.usf.edu/holocaust/resource/document/DOCNAC8.htm">broke up political meetings</a> held by the Nazis’ political enemies.
A total of <a href="https://www.history.com/news/d-day-casualties-deaths-allies">2,501 Americans</a> were killed and 10,000 wounded on D-Day itself, not counting our Allies.
There’s a term for trying to equate Antifa street rioters with the young men who liberated Europe from the scourge of Nazism at the expense of their own lives: <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2020/08/19/army-veteran-gets-12-months-prison-time-for-stolen-valor/">stolen valor</a>.

The Navy SEAL who killed Osama bin Laden a decade ago disagreed with an assessment from a former Lincoln Project adviser who alleged that the Republican Party poses a greater threat to the U.S. than al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, and the Taliban combined.
Robert J. O&#8217;Neill, who fired the shot that killed bin Laden 10 years ago this month, pushed back against MSNBC guest Kurt Bardella&#8217;s claim that the GOP are worse than terrorists because they are trying to remove Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) from House leadership.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve never met him, so I don&#8217;t want to talk any trash about him,&#8221; O&#8217;Neill told local D.C. &#8220;Mornings on the Mall&#8221; hosts Vince Coglianese and Mary Walter on Friday. &#8220;He&#8217;s obviously an educated dude. I think he&#8217;s trying to get a soundbite, which he definitely did on this one.&#8221;
&#8220;Go interview them in Yemen, go interview al Qaeda somewhere in northern Africa or Syria, and tell me how that goes,&#8221; O&#8217;Neill urged, referencing a tweet he issued in response to Bardella. &#8220;And then go try to interview someone on the House side of the GOP. One side&#8217;s probably going to try to cut your head off, and the other one won&#8217;t.&#8221;

Bardella, who used to work for Breitbart News and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) before becoming an adviser to The Lincoln Project, told MSNBC host Joy Reid this week: &#8220;I&#8217;ve been thinking to myself this whole time, you know, al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, the Taliban, the people who wanted to do harm to our nation and to our way of life and our democracy, they got nothing on what this Republican Party is doing.&#8221;
&#8220;The idea that a member of their party, of their leadership, who&#8217;s last name is Cheney, could be purged from their leadership for telling the truth about January 6, for telling the truth about a violent insurrection that claimed the lives of, among others, a Capitol police officer,&#8221; continued Bardella.
&#8220;The fact that people like Cheney won&#8217;t support the great lie that this election was rigged or there was voter fraud, the anti-Democratic forces are hijacking this party, purging one of the members who won&#8217;t abide by the party line, that is so detrimental and dangerous,&#8221; he continued.
&#8220;We are a two-party system in this country, that&#8217;s how it was built for better or worse. When one of those two parties becomes this radicalized and when the core of the party&#8217;s ideology is anti-Democratic, that is a very dangerous development going to result in more violence, that&#8217;s going to result in more attempts to overthrow our government, that&#8217;s going to result in people losing lives just like January 6,&#8221; Bardella added.
