A funny thing started happening as I trudged through Lena Dunham’s new memoir, “Famesick.” I started hating her a little less. Like so many conservatives, my thoughts on Dunham were surface-level. She was an insufferable liberal, a narcissistic celebrity, and, as she made clear in her last published work, a person with an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/woman-who-sexually-abused-her-sister-mocks-trump-amanda-prestigiacomo">appalling lack</a> of personal boundaries, even around children.
I watched “Girls” back in the day because I was the right demographic. At that point, I was still figuring out who I was, just like the main characters. The show was sharp, funny, and honest. Much like Dunham, it turns out. It&#8217;s just too bad she spent so much of her life chasing after all the wrong things. 
I never read her first memoir, “Not That Kind of Girl,” which came out in 2014 and inspired so much <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/lena-dunhams-first-memoir-led-to-accusations-of-sexual-abuse-so-she-decided-to-write-another">controversy</a>. That essay collection famously included revelations that Dunham “examined” her younger sister’s genitals, and then when she got called out for it, the actress attacked her detractors for thinking it was gross. 
“The right-wing news story that I molested my little sister isn’t just LOL – it’s really f*cking upsetting and disgusting. And by the way, if you were a little kid and never looked at another little kid’s vagina, well, congrats to you,” she <a href="https://x.com/lenadunham/status/528613546108944384">posted</a> in 2014.
“Famesick” is less about the questionable decisions of minors and more about Dunham’s rise to fame and how it never made her truly happy. 
She comes across as deeply insecure (“I still thought that true love was performed with the one-sided devotion of a kicked dog”), obsessed with her reputation, clinging desperately to failing relationships (especially the toxic partnership with “Girls” co-showrunner Jenni Konner), and keen on informing readers how popular she once was and how much sex she was having. Dunham vacillates between bragging and doom spiraling while keeping the focus always on her inner turmoil.
“People on the internet were cruel to me, but nobody was crueler to me than I was to myself,” she says at one point. The whole thing reeks of wanting to be liked, and to be remembered for once being liked. 
Dunham also takes time to reflect on the fallout from her first book, writing, “I was shocked when a conservative media site analyzed the book carefully, pulling choice passages and coming to the conclusion that I had engaged in sexually inappropriate childhood behavior with my sibling.” This referred specifically to the media watchdog site Truth Revolt, where Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro served as editor in chief.
Dunham wrote that she wasn’t too worried about the backlash at first because she assumed “any logical person” would interpret the negative reaction as being “an attempt to cherrypick sections to create a narrative that spoke to the idea that I — and by extension, the majority of feminists — were not crusaders for justice but, in fact, wanton perverts.”
“I didn’t consider what I’d written to be particularly salacious,” the actress went on. “And anyway, what about the things I hadn’t included? I’d decided against describing the time, age four, I announced to a group of near-strangers that my punishment at home for misbehavior was having ‘a fork stuck up my vagina.’ (It was not.) I don’t know where I came up with that, but I’ve always been confused by anyone who doesn’t recognize that children are inherently innocent, and yet their imaginations are endless and deranged.”
“What I had been guilty of on the page, what the internet should have charged me with and given me a short sentence for, was poor phrasing — maybe a second count for TMI,” Dunham wrote, noting how her sister has since started identifying as a boy and going into some detail about their distant, complicated relationship.
“Famesick” is also full of medical drama and, eventually, a raging pill addiction. Dunham is ill for most of the book, in and out of the hospital for various conditions and surgeries, which eventually culminates in her having a full hysterectomy to counteract the painful reality of endometriosis. 
I was surprised to find out that Dunham did originally want to be a mother. She also spent thousands of dollars attempting to have biological children via IVF, only for it all to end in failure.
“I had never had a single doubt about wanting children,” she wrote, mourning the loss of what would never be. It was surprising only because she’s such a devout pro-abortion feminist who had a significant amount of success in Hollywood. The yearning for children doesn’t match the stereotype. It also made her a more sympathetic character. 
Ultimately, Dunham is selfish and flawed, earnest yet delusional, self-obsessed but trying to change. I’ve always preferred memoirs because fiction writers so often fail to capture that nuance of multi-faceted personalities. Watching someone make bad decisions over and over hits harder when it’s all based on true events.
For the first time maybe ever, I found myself agreeing with Slate for pointing out that this book was so readable in part because Dunham is truly skilled at her craft. The progressive website&#8217;s <a href="https://slate.com/culture/2026/04/lena-dunham-book-famesick-review.html">review</a> called it “an ideal celebrity memoir with the added bonus of being written by someone who can actually write.&#8221;
The Atlantic&#8217;s review <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/books/2026/04/lena-dunham-famesick-memoir-book-review/686799/">praised</a> Dunham’s growth over the last decade, noting that in “Famesick,” she had “actually learned from her garrulous and unfiltered excesses — she&#8217;s got stories to tell in Famesick that blow the roof off, but she&#8217;s wielding them with precision this time around.” 
Dunham is truly lost as a person. She fondly recalls having dinner with Robert De Niro and Bruce Springsteen, mourns President Donald Trump winning the election, and campaigns for Hillary Clinton. She’s about as incorrect on every conceivable topic as a person can be. And yet, my feelings throughout the book weren’t anger. They were closer to pity. 
I began to associate Dunham’s plight with every career-focused feminist who, at around the mid-point of life, is realizing that enduring happiness won’t come from professional success or fickle fans.
Dunham isn’t pure evil, even if she’s not the victim she thinks she is. She’s infuriating and sympathetic in tandem. And ultimately, she’s just another flawed human who, through her warped ideology, made her life a lot harder than it had to be.

Lena Dunham is addressing the fallout from years-old claims that she sexually abused her younger sister, who is now identifying as &#8220;transmasculine nonbinary.&#8221;
The “Girls” creator is currently on the interview circuit promoting her new memoir, “Famesick,” which is a follow-up to her first memoir, “Not That Kind of Girl.” 
Dunham delivered a slightly different outlook when she addressed the controversy spawned by the first book in the pages of the second. 
&#8220;I was shocked when a conservative media site analyzed the book carefully, pulling choice passages and coming to the conclusion that I had engaged in sexually inappropriate childhood behavior with my sibling,&#8221; Dunham wrote in the new book, referring specifically to the media watchdog site Truth Revolt, the site where Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro served as Editor-in-Chief.

I&#8217;d decided against describing the time, age four, I announced to a group of near-strangers that my punishment at home for misbehavior was having &#8216;a fork stuck up my vagina.&#8217; (It was not.) I don&#8217;t know where I came up with that, but I&#8217;ve always been confused by anyone who doesn&#8217;t recognize that children are inherently innocent, and yet their imaginations are endless and deranged.&#8221;
Now, Dunham is especially sympathetic about putting the experience in print, not because she thinks it was wrong, but because it negatively impacted her sister’s journey to coming out as trans.
She noted how this situation happened just as her little sister was &#8220;sprouting wings, getting out from under the type-A straight-girl drag he&#8217;d [sic] worn for all of high school.&#8221;
&#8220;What I had been guilty of on the page, what the internet should have charged me with and given me a short sentence for, was poor phrasing — maybe a second count for TMI,&#8221; Dunham wrote in “Famesick.”
&#8220;What I was now guilty of seemed to be a laissez-faire attitude about what was mine to confess, which had derailed the life of the person I had felt most tasked with protecting.&#8221;
Dunham defended her actions as being a response to her sister being a “mystery.”
&#8220;It was ironic that as a 6-year-old, I&#8217;d wondered if he had a vagina, when what I didn&#8217;t understand for the entirety of our shared childhood was that he wasn&#8217;t my sister,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;Eight years ago, around the time Cyrus came out as trans, he and I were still working to mend our relationship. It wasn&#8217;t just the incident around the book — since the moment I&#8217;d begun to have a public life, it had gobbled up the space around his private one, however unintentionally.&#8221;
&#8220;It didn&#8217;t help that the champagne fizz of new fame makes even the most generous people temporarily narcissistic, obsessed with their own image and its success or failure,&#8221; she admitted. &#8220;But the book had been a clear turning point, after which he seemed to feel safer being as far away as possible from the ricocheting bullets of my public persona.&#8221;
In the first book, which was released in 2014, Dunham described masturbating while lying next to her very young sister and inspecting her vagina. “My mother didn’t bother asking why I had opened Grace’s vagina,” Dunham wrote in the original book. “This was within the spectrum of things that I did.”
In another passage, she discussed trying to get her sister to “kiss her on the lips for five seconds” by offering gifts. “Basically, anything a sexual predator might do to woo a small suburban girl, I was trying,” Dunham <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/nov/05/lena-dunham-statement-abuse-claims">wrote</a>.
The backlash to these revelations put her on the defensive, with her going on a self-described “rage spiral.”

These unique <a href="https://www.ebay.com/e/charity/tusc-charity-auction?toolid=10001&amp;mkcid=1&amp;campid=5337789386&amp;mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&amp;customid=87443X1540253Xd8958fa1794a8a0bf7d2f0c3fa4b1fca&amp;_sop=3&amp;rt=nc">listings</a> popped up on eBay through the Union Solidarity Coalition, with many items going for thousands of dollars and climbing as more people share them. For example, actress <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/lena-dunham">Lena Dunham</a> is willing to <a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/186072283450?hash=item2b52c5b93a%3Ag%3A5RIAAOSwykdk%7EJ4O&amp;_trkparms=%2526rpp_cid%253D64d549ebbdbe1c8c27960c98">paint a mural</a> in the auction winner’s home.

Another auction offers bidders the chance for Emmy-winning actor John Lithgow to paint watercolor portrait of their dog. That auction is at $4,250 as of Friday. The most expensive item right now is dinner with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, currently going for $9,100.
The second most expensive auction is the chance to have the cast of “Bob’s Burgers” sing a song custom-written just for the winner, at around $7,000.

The 36-year-old “Girls” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">creator</a> ignited the controversy when she shared a tweet of the bizarre request Sunday afternoon. 
“When I go, I want my casket to be driven through the NYC pride parade with a plaque that reads &#8216;she wasn’t for everyone, but she *was* for us&#8217;- who can arrange?” Dunham shared with her 5.2 million Twitter followers.

Social media users seemed confused about why the Hollywood star wanted to be honored this way.
“And what have u ever done for the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/lgbtq">LGBTQ</a>? Sis you ain’t no gay icon,” one follower shot back. 
Another agreed, <a href="https://twitter.com/W0rk_N_Class/status/1576607129473253376">writing</a>, “Pride is for us, not gratifying the egos of straight people who see us as accessories.”
“It’s called gay pride not straight shame,” someone else shared.
Someone else replied: “Girl, no. we don&#8217;t claim you like that.”
“I have never before presumed to speak for every gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender person but on this occasion I think I can safely say, we don’t want you,” another reply said.
Most responses were brutal toward Dunham’s original request, causing some followers to question if only haters followed the actress on Twitter.
“Counterpoint: we drive a photo of you through the jersey shore with a sign that says ‘we’re not sure who she is either,&#8221; one follower <a href="https://twitter.com/jamiefrickengib/status/1576606324611481601">quipped</a>.
And another follower accused the “Girls” star of being a shameless self-promoter and attention-seeker.
“She died as she lived: in a ploy for attention that was as puzzling as it was desperate,” another response said.
Dunham previously said she always felt a bond with the LGBTQ community despite not being same-sex attracted herself. 
In April of 2014, Dunham specifically said she was “disappointed” that she is not gay and was thrilled when her sister Grace came out at 17.
“I have always felt a strong and emotional connection to members of the LGBTQ community,” she said during a speech at the Point Foundation awards in NYC, per <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/530308/lena-dunham-talks-about-lesbian-sister-admits-she-s-sad-she-s-sexually-attracted-to-men-and-not-gay">E! Online</a>. “It was actually a huge disappointment for me when I came of age and realized that I was sexually attracted to men.”
“So when my sister came out, I thought, &#8220;Thank God, now someone in this family can truly represent my beliefs and passions,’” she continued.
Dunham also professed to being “very jealous of any child who had two dads.”

Outspoken feminist and leftist actress <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/lena-dunham">Lena Dunham</a> is debuting a coming-of-age story aimed at young adults, and critics are already fawning over the medieval <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/watch/movies">comedy</a>.
Dunham is best known for the HBO series “Girls,” which was full of sex, nudity, and drugs. But now the 36-year-old creator is focusing on messaging targeting a younger crowd. Her new <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/entertainment">film</a> “Catherine Called Birdy” is set in a Medieval English village in the year 1290.

The main character Lady Catherine (nicknamed Birdy) goes on a series of adventures while trying to fend off potential marital suitors foisted upon her by a greedy father seeking a big dowry to cover his debts. It’s adapted from Karen Cushman’s 1994 novel of the same name. 
Bella Ramsey of “Game of Thrones” fame plays the main character. The film is rated PG-13 and is touted as a coming-of-age story. “Catherine Called Birdy” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be debuting on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/amazon-prime">Prime Video</a> beginning October 7. 
The comedy is said to contain some slightly creepy elements, like a much older suitor who Birdy nicknames “Shaggy Beard.” Overall, however, the movie targets a younger crowd to deliver a message of female empowerment.
“Catherine Called Birdy” currently has a 70% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“A delightfully witty, irrelevant, and modern-minded while carefully dodging the self-satisfaction and smugness that those descriptors can conjure up,” one reviewer wrote. 
“Leave it to ‘Girls’ creator Lena Dunham to deliver what’s been missing from the field of princess movies all these years: namely, permission for young women to be themselves, regardless of what their parents or the patriarchy might think,” the viewer from Variety agreed. 
Another reviewer noted that the feminist messaging is toned down yet still present for the younger audience. 
“The film goes in a different, more light-hearted direction, avoiding Dunham’s R-rated humor for a more watered down version of feminist themes,” a Screen Rant reviewer observed.
But not all critics were thrilled by the movie. One reviewer called the film &#8220;listless, plodding and self-congratulatory,” while a RogerEbert.com reviewer said it didn’t live up to the book’s “richness.”
Following the massive success of “Girls,” Dunham has been seeking another comparable hit and hasn’t found one so far. Her HBO show “Camping” wasn’t well-received and the comedy “Sharp Stick” about a girl who has an affair with her married boss also got slammed by viewers and critics alike.

Lena Dunham&#8217;s new fashion collaboration, designed to improve the availability of high fashion to plus-sized women, is facing a strong backlash from woke critics who claim the line, designed in partnership with the website 11 Honore, just isn&#8217;t inclusive enough.
Dunham&#8217;s &#8220;tightly edited&#8221; collaboration with the high fashion site, which features capsule collections of &#8220;expanded size range&#8221; clothing from designers like Diane Von Furstenburg, Christian Siriano, Mara Hoffman, and Dolce &amp; Gabbana, features just five pieces to start, ranging in price from $98 to $298, though those five pieces are available in sizes 14-26.
11 Honore touted the line as a major fashion achievement.
“We took a lot of time perfecting the grade up to a size 26 which included multiple fittings on a range of women from size 12-26 with varying body shapes. Our ultimate goal is to dress as many women as possible and we are completely open to expanding past size 26 in the future!” the online fashion outlet noted in its statement.

“Right now the only thing I’m doing is speaking about my own experience,” Dunham told The New York Times about the collection, which, she added, filled a gap in her own wardrobe. “So this clothing line is a direct response to my experience.”
It isn&#8217;t a direct response to everyone&#8217;s lived experience, though, according to woke critics who took aim at Dunham&#8217;s collection immediately after it launched, because the line stops at size 26, and that&#8217;s just not large enough for some women. So, critics say, Dunham really should not have labeled her five pieces part of an &#8220;inclusive&#8221; effort.

Lena Dunham is starting a fresh venture and taking on a new role as fashion designer with the launch of her new plus-size clothing line this week.
Dunham discussed the move with <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/05/style/lena-dunham-body-positivity-11-honore-spanx.html">The New York Times</a> during a virtual interview with the outlet. She also commented on the current body positivity movement that has grown in popularity in recent years.
The line — <a href="https://11honore.com/pages/the-11-honore-shopping-event">11 Honoré x Lena Dunham</a> — debuts this week. It is a joint effort between Dunham and <a href="https://11honore.com/">11 Honoré</a>, a women&#8217;s clothing company that specializes in designer plus-size clothing. The clothing company is based around the idea that women of any size (the line specifically targets women sizes 12 and up) can wear designer brands.
<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/05/style/lena-dunham-body-positivity-11-honore-spanx.html">The New York Times</a> reported that Dunham&#8217;s work with the brand &#8220;will be 11 Honoré’s first celebrity foray, and it is a tightly edited collection of only five items. Dunham said this is because “I’ve totally given up on the idea of being any type of impresario or person who had something to say to everyone.”
“Right now the only thing I’m doing is speaking about my own experience,” she said. “So this clothing line is a direct response to my experience.”
Dunham has been public about her health journeys throughout the years, including her experience with the coronavirus, which she contracted last March. The New York Times reported, &#8220;Though she has recovered, the disease affected her pituitary gland and left her with partial adrenal insufficiency, she said, so she is taking steroids.&#8221;
“Not the cool kind that make you muscular,” she said. “Just the kind that make your face fat. I’m trying to roll with that. Trying to be chin positive. I can deal with anything, but a triple chin is a hard place to land.”
She made a point to thank her medical providers and discuss how she is aware that she is privileged with private health care access and the opportunity to work.
“It doesn’t mean I haven’t felt a lot of body hatred in lockdown,” she said. However, she said that she is not a fan of some current wording, like “plus” or “curve” or “body positive.”
“The thing that’s complicated about the body positive movement,” she said, “is it can be for the privileged few who have a body that looks the way people want to feel positive. We want curvy bodies that look like Kim Kardashian has been up-sized slightly. We want big beautiful butts and big beautiful breasts and no cellulite and faces that look like you could smack them on to thin women.”
“I have a big stomach, I always have. That’s where I gain my weight — especially after early menopause, I have a straight-up gut, like an old man — and that’s not where anybody wants to see flesh. It’s not like if I posted a sensual nude of myself on Instagram, people would be marveling at my beautiful derrière.”
“There’s so much judgment around bigger bodies, and I think one of the judgments is that bigger women are stupider,” she continued. “They eat too much and don’t know how to stop. Thin women must be discerning and able to use their willpower. Bigger women must be limited in their understanding of the world, and they keep doing things that are bad for them. The amount of people who have written to me on my page: ‘You’re promoting obesity. Don’t you understand you’re killing yourself. Are you stupid? Why are you doing that?’”
Dunham discussed feedback she has received on her style. “The thing that’s been really interesting is how angry it makes people when you dress like yourself,” Ms. Dunham said. “It’s not, ‘Oh, I don’t like that dress.’ It’s, ‘How dare you?’ And it’s fascinating how much of that comes from other women with bodies that look like mine. It’s not a male gym rat. It’s other women who have been indoctrinated with the same message: ‘Didn’t you get the memo? We’re all doing this. We’re all going to wear the Spanx.’”
Dunham will not wear Spanx and she said she hardly ever wears a bra. None of the clothing she is putting out with the new line requires a woman to wear a bra with it.
Dunham has another film coming out soon, &#8220;Sharp Stick,&#8221; that she told The New York Times was written last summer as &#8220;a meditation on the complexity of, uh, female sexual desire and how it intersects with trauma.&#8221;

Discussing the song and women in rap during a recent Apple Music roundtable event, former reality TV show star and rapper known as <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/female-rapper-blasts-women-for-having-self-respect-in-vulgar-apple-music-interview-i-liberate-a-lot-of-hs">Sukihana</a> (real name Destiny Henderson), who is featured in the explicit WAP music video, offered a glance into what female empowerment and self-respect supposedly look like to her.
Sukihana bragged about being a “h**” and “s***ing and f***ing” and bashed women for having “self-respect,&#8221; which, according to the rapper, is actually “taxing” men, suggesting that women essentially prostitute themselves.
“I feel like being, like, sexual and s***, like, I don’t see nothing wrong with that,” said Sukihana. “‘Cause, baby, I got three kids. And, I mean, I got these kids from s***ing and f***ing.”
“At the end of the day, me being a h**, like these people say, like, honestly, I liberate a lot of h***s, you feel me?” she said.
“When I hear Cardi talk about poppin’ some p****, me and my b****es is with it, that liberate us,” the rapper continued. ‘Cause it’s like f*** you self-respecting h**s. ‘Cause how you got self-respect, like, I don’t think y’all got self-respect like that. ‘Cause first of all, you supposed to tax these n****s. According to Dunham, she contracted COVID-19 in mid-March and decided to share her experience to combat the &#8220;carelessness with which so many in the United States are treating social distancing.&#8221;
&#8220;&#8230; seeing the carelessness with which so many in the United States are treating social distancing, people jogging without masks and parties on Instagram, I feel compelled to be honest about the impact this illness has had on me, in the hopes that personal stories allow us to see the humanity in what can feel like abstract situations,&#8221; she began.
&#8220;The fact is, the coronavirus kills people. We know that. But it will also alter the bodies and lived experiences of so many who are infected, in ways they could never have predicted,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;In some odd sense, I feel blessed to have entered this experience as a &#8216;sick&#8217; person; otherwise I don&#8217;t know how I would have tolerated crossing that threshold from well to unwell. Lots of people are doing it gracefully right now. But worse than that, they&#8217;re doing it alone.&#8221;
Dunham continued her post by describing her struggle with COVID-19, which included the typical symptoms (fever, loss of taste and smell, fatigue) and a few other distinct varients, such as her inability to &#8220;tolerate loud noises,&#8221; “random red rashes,&#8221; and a crushing headache between her eyes. She likened this relentless pain to &#8220;a complex machine that had been unplugged and then had my wires rerouted into the wrong inputs.&#8221; Her hacking cough, she also said, was &#8220;like a metronome keeping time.&#8221;
&#8220;This went on for 21 days, days that blended into each other like a rave gone wrong. I was lucky enough to have a doctor who could offer me regular guidance on how to care for myself and I never had to be hospitalized,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This kind of hands-on attention is a privilege that is far too unusual in our broken healthcare system. I self-isolated with my pulse oximeter, monitoring my level. &#8230; After a month, I tested negative for COVID-19 and was able to spend time around my isolation pod again. I couldn&#8217;t believe how intense the loneliness had been, in addition to the illness.&#8221;
Despite the virus having been defeated, Dunham still experienced severe after-effects, such as &#8220;swollen hands and feet, an unceasing migraine and fatigue that limited my every move.&#8221;
&#8220;The doctor determined I was suffering from clinical adrenal insufficiency – my pituitary gland had almost entirely ceased to function – as well as a &#8216;status migrainosis,'&#8221; she said. &#8220;My arthritis flared and required an immune-modulator drug that is hard on my body. And there are weirder symptoms that I&#8217;ll keep to myself.&#8221;
Dunham asserted that she did not experience these symptoms prior to COVID-19 and does not know why her body responded so negatively. Though she gave no indication that it contributed to her suffering, Dunham did <a href="https://www.today.com/health/what-ehlers-danlos-syndrome-lena-dunham-reveals-diagnosis-t166421">reveal in 2019</a> that she suffers from Ehlers–Danlos syndrome, the symptoms of which include &#8220;joint pain&#8221; and &#8220;slow and poor wound healing.&#8221;

It’s hard to have a national conversation on the subject when folks like Lena Dunham, Kevin Bacon and Simon Pegg keep telling us to zip it, Morton Downey, Jr. style.
White progressive stars claiming they have nothing valuable to say on racism is the new virtue signal, but there’s a practical side to it.
Kevin Bacon brought out the “shut up, he said” mantra on race relations first. The “Tremors” star told the press he’s <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/kevin-bacon-old-white-guys-need-to-shut-up-and-listen-racial-tensions">ready and willing to shut his own yap</a>.
&#8220;It&#8217;s incredible to experience this and to go through this historically, not just the COVID-19, but clearly seeing the protests and what&#8217;s going on,&#8221; noted the 61-year-old actor. &#8220;For an old guy like me, I was born in 1958, and to witness the passion of the young people across the world for social justice – it leaves me speechless, which is probably a good idea because I think it&#8217;s a good time for old white guys like me to just shut up and listen.&#8221;
Yes, Bacon is white and can’t speak to the black experience. He’s also a 61-year-old man who has lived through quite a bit. He may have memories to share about racial exchanges on the set. Or, perhaps he fears what giving unchecked power to a neo-<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/black-lives-matter-leader-if-this-country-doesnt-give-us-what-we-want-then-we-will-burn-down-the-system">Marxist organization like Black Lives Matters</a> could mean to the country he calls home.
You can’t actually say that in Hollywood, but you can still think it. We think.
More seriously, perhaps we need a 60-something star’s ability to empathize with other people. Heck, that’s the biggest tool in an actor’s kit, to get under the skin of a character and see what makes him or her tick.
Saying nothing puts that skill set on a shelf, unused.
Bacon shouldn’t necessarily lead the conversation, of course. But why can’t he have a speaking part?
“Star Trek” alum Simon Pegg <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2020/jun/28/simon-pegg-lost-transmissions-mental-health-blm-film-industry-mission-impossible-7">took a similar path</a> in a recent interview.
“Anyone that’s complaining about it should just shut the f*** up because it’s time,” he says. “The film industry would be such a healthier, more interesting place if there were more voices, different stories, different experiences. It’s so dominated by one particular voice and colour of face, it just perpetuates a bland mono-voiced cultural landscape.”

He isn’t done self-flagellating. He’s aware that he could be seen as part of that landscape, but wants Stolen Picture to be a hub for any and all creative people.

And then there’s Lena Dunham. The mistress of hot takes has a few more, but this time on race and “white privilege.”
First, <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/entertainment/2020/06/30/lena-dunham-give-reparations-widely-defund-the-police-rinse-repeat/">the obligatory apology</a> for her own success.
“The Hollywood system is rigged in favor of white people,” she said in a recent social media post, adding that “my career took off at a young age with relative ease, ease I wasn’t able to recognize because I also didn’t know what privilege was&#8230;”
“The lesson now? Sit down. Shut up, unless it’s to advocate for change for Black people. Listen. Make art in private for awhile- no one needs your book right now lady. Give reparations widely. Defund the police. Rinse &amp; repeat.”
Is Dunham giving some of her own wealth away, <a href="https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/lena-dunham-how-much-is-the-actress-worth-and-whats-next-for-her.html/">reportedly $12 million</a>, to kick things off?
What do these stars all have in common besides an ability to grovel?
Fame. Wealth. Prestige. Connections.
They’ve all navigated the Hollywood ecosystem for years, if not decades, and have the bank accounts to prove it. They can brag about stepping aside to give actors of color a chance. They may have noble intentions, and diversity problems still plague the industry, but these stars have been warriors for change for all of five minutes.
The other reason they’re voluntarily shutting up is for self-preservation. If they say the wrong thing — by “wrong” we mean not 100 percent in lockstep with the authoritarian Left — they could be canceled next.
Remember the heat Matt Damon took for saying something so obvious, so ordinary, during a previous cultural panic? Shortly after Harvey Weinstein’s precipitous fall Damon <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/matt-damons-on-hollywood-sexual-misconduct-scandals-theres-a-spectrum-120883/">noted the difference</a> between what the movie mogul allegedly did and what some accused then-Sen. Al Franken of doing.
“I think it’s wonderful that women are feeling empowered to tell their stories and it’s totally necessary,” he said. “I do believe there’s a spectrum of behavior. … You know, there’s a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation, right? Both of those behaviors need to be confronted and eradicated without question, but they shouldn’t be conflated.”
It&#8217;s a fair and valid point, one made with all the necessary qualifiers. He was shouted down by his peers and press all the same.
