Iowa Republican Governor Kim Reynolds announced Friday that she would not seek another term in office, saying she would be leaving politics to prioritize her family. 
Reynolds has led Iowa since 2017, after then-Governor Terry Branstad was appointed by President Donald Trump as ambassador to China. During her tenure, Republicans passed the largest income tax cut in state history, election integrity measures, and legislation on abortion and transgenderism as they controlled both the state House and Senate. 
“Serving as your governor has been the greatest honor of my life, an opportunity that not so long ago I never could have imagined,” Reynolds said in a video posted to social media. “Today, I want to share a personal decision with you, one that was not made lightly, but comes with a full heart and a deep sense of gratitude. After a lot of thought, prayer, and conversations with my family, I have decided that I will not seek reelection in 2026. This wasn’t an easy decision because I love this state.”

In the video, she said her move from politics was motivated by her family, saying she wanted to be able to attend more of her grandchildren’s athletic events. Her husband was also diagnosed with cancer in 2023. 
“This public service has been an incredible journey, one that I wouldn’t trade for anything, but as Iowans know, family is everything. And through the years, my parents, my husband Kevin, our daughters, and our grandchildren have stood by my side, supporting me through every challenge and every victory. And now it&#8217;s time for me to be there for them, to help them through the next stage of life.”
Iowa GOP Chair Jeff Kaufman <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/gov-kim-reynolds-not-seek-170457140.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">praised</a> Reynolds after her announcement. 
“Gov. Reynolds has been a generational leader for our state and party,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Under her bold, conservative leadership, Iowa now sits as one of the best states in the entire country. Taxes are low, cash reserves are full, our freedoms defended, and Iowa’s future has never been brighter.&#8221;

During the 2024 GOP primary, she received harsh criticism from Donald Trump when she backed the campaign of Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who was challenging Trump for the party&#8217;s presidential nomination. 
Since 2010, Iowa has veered sharply to the Right, with Republicans taking supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature. In 2022, Reynolds won the state with 58% of the vote. Republicans who could potentially look to succeed Reynolds include Attorney General Brenna Bird and pastor and former state Representative Brad Sherman, who has already started campaigning.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/iowa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Iowa</a> Supreme Court ruled on Friday that a law banning abortion when an unborn baby&#8217;s heartbeat can be detected can take effect in a victory for pro-life advocates.
In a 4-3 decision, the court said that protecting unborn babies when their heartbeats can be detected is a legitimate state interest. The decision means that Iowa’s previous 20-week limit on abortion <a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2024/06/28/iowa-supreme-court-clears-way-for-6-week-fetal-heartbeat-abortion-ban-womens-rights/74169072007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will soon</a> be around six weeks once the court&#8217;s ruling officially takes effect.
“We have previously held that abortion is not a fundamental right under the Iowa Constitution,” Justice Matthew McDermott <a href="https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/24781867/231145_c03d97c16be14.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> for the majority. “Applying our established tiers of scrutiny, we hold that abortion restrictions alleged to violate the due process clause are subject to the rational basis test. Employing that test here, we conclude that the fetal heartbeat statute is rationally related to the state’s legitimate interest in protecting unborn life.”
“We thus reverse the district court order entering the temporary injunction blocking enforcement of the fetal heartbeat statute and remand for further proceedings,” McDermott wrote.
The state was sued by Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union after Governor Kim Reynolds signed the heartbeat bill into law after Republican lawmakers passed it during a special session last year. The law includes exceptions for rape and incest.
In a dissenting opinion, Chief Justice Susan Christensen claimed the law was a setback for women.
“Today, our court’s majority strips Iowa women of their bodily autonomy by holding that there is no fundamental right to terminate a pregnancy under our state constitution,” she wrote. “The majority’s rigid approach relies heavily on the male-dominated history and traditions of the 1800s, all the while ignoring how far women’s rights have come since the Civil War era.”

Iowa Republicans <a href="https://governor.iowa.gov/press-release/2024-06-28/gov-reynolds-republican-leaders-release-statements-iowa-supreme-court-fetal-heartbeat-ruling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">celebrated</a> the ruling from the court.
&#8220;There is no right more sacred than life, and nothing more worthy of our strongest defense than the innocent unborn,” Reynolds said in a statement. “As the heartbeat bill finally becomes law, we are deeply committed to supporting women in planning for motherhood, and promoting fatherhood and its importance in parenting.”
House Speaker Pat Grassley said that courts had stood in the way of pro-life protections for a long time.
“This ruling is a victory in the fight to protect unborn children in Iowa,” Grassley said. “The Legislature is elected by the people, and for too long, the courts have stood in the way of Iowans having their voices heard on this matter.”

An Iowa bill that was signed into law by Republican Governor Kim Reynolds in April allowing state authorities to arrest and deport some illegal immigrants was blocked by a federal judge, who ruled on Monday that the policy is unconstitutional.
U.S. District Judge Stephen Locher, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, wrote that Iowa&#8217;s &#8220;illegal reentry&#8221; law violates the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution and interferes with the federal government&#8217;s authority to enforce immigration laws, the Des Moines Register <a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/crime-and-courts/2024/06/17/iowa-immigration-law-enforcement-blocked-by-federal-court/74130393007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The Department of Justice <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-admin-sues-iowa-over-immigration-law-allowing-state-to-arrest-and-deport-illegal-immigrants" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sued</a> Iowa over the law last month, arguing that the state was &#8220;disregard[ing] the U.S. Constitution and settled Supreme Court precedent.&#8221;
The law, which was passed as Senate File 2340, allows state authorities to arrest and deport illegal immigrants who had previously been removed from the U.S. or denied entry into the country. It was set to take effect on July 1.
&#8220;As a matter of politics, the new legislation might be defensible. As a matter of constitutional law, it is not,&#8221; Locher wrote. &#8220;Under binding Supreme Court precedent, Senate File 2340 is preempted in its entirety by federal law and thus is invalid under the Supremacy Clause.&#8221;
Locher pointed to a 2012 Supreme Court ruling on an Arizona law that allowed state authorities to stop and detain people suspected of illegally crossing the border. The Supreme Court <a href="https://www.oyez.org/cases/2011/11-182" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled</a> 5-3 — with Justices Anthony Kennedy and John Roberts joining three liberal justices — that the Arizona immigration law interfered with federal government enforcement of laws already on the books. Justice Antonin Scalia argued that the Arizona law did not conflict with federal law and even worked to better enforce federal law.
Under Iowa&#8217;s law, illegal immigrants could face up to 10 years in prison for illegally reentering the U.S. if they were arrested for committing a separate felony. A judge would also be required to submit an order for deportation of an illegal immigrant convicted of unlawfully entering the U.S. Reynolds <a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2024/04/10/reynolds-signs-law-letting-iowa-police-arrest-undocumented-immigrants-texas-illegal-reentry/73279222007/">said</a> in April that the state law was necessary because President Joe Biden &#8220;has failed to enforce our nation’s immigration laws, putting the protection and safety of Iowans at risk.&#8221;
Reynolds and Iowa Republican Attorney General Brenna Bird have vowed to appeal Judge Locher&#8217;s ruling, according to the Des Moines Register.
&#8220;I am disappointed in today’s court decision that blocks Iowa from stopping illegal reentry and keeping our communities safe,&#8221; Bird said. &#8220;Since Biden refuses to secure our borders, he has left states with no choice but to do the job for him.&#8221;

The Iowa immigration law is similar to legislation passed in other GOP-controlled states such as Texas and Georgia. Texas&#8217; law authorizing state authorities to prosecute migrants for illegally crossing the southern border has also been <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/03/19/texas-sb-4-illegal-immigration/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blocked</a>.
As Reynolds argued in Iowa, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton said that the Biden administration is failing to address illegal immigration. Paxton added that the state has a constitutional duty to protect its citizens &#8220;from violent transnational cartels that flood the State with fentanyl, weapons, and all manner of brutality.”

Republican Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law on Wednesday that allows state authorities to arrest and deport immigrants in Iowa who have previously been deported or denied entry into the country.
The measure was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/republican-led-state-passes-bill-similar-to-texas-immigration-law-being-challenged-by-biden-admin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> last month by Iowa&#8217;s GOP-controlled legislature, with multiple Democrats joining Republicans in sending the bill to Reynolds&#8217; desk. The new law, which is set to go into effect on July 1, makes &#8220;illegal reentry&#8221; a state crime, and illegal immigrants who break the law could face up to two years in prison and deportation, Iowa Public Radio <a href="https://www.iowapublicradio.org/state-government-news/2024-04-10/iowa-governor-reynolds-texas-style-immigration-enforcement-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
“The Biden Administration has failed to enforce our nation’s immigration laws, putting the protection and safety of Iowans at risk,&#8221; Reynolds <a href="https://governor.iowa.gov/press-release/2024-04-10/gov-reynolds-signs-several-bills-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &#8220;Those who come into our country illegally have broken the law, yet Biden refuses to deport them. Under the new state law, an immigrant could be guilty of a Class C felony and face up to 10 years in prison for illegally entering the country if he/she was arrested for committing another felony. The law also requires Iowa judges to submit an order for a person convicted of illegally entering the U.S. to be returned to their home country.
The new Iowa law is similar to a Texas immigration measure that is currently stuck in a legal battle with the Biden administration. The Texas law, which also allows state authorities to arrest and deport immigrants for illegally entering the U.S., is currently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/federal-judge-says-there-will-be-real-consequences-after-texas-blocked-again-from-enforcing-immigration-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blocked</a> by a federal appeals court.
After Texas passed the immigration law, the Biden administration, along with groups such as the ACLU sued. The Biden administration cited the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution, arguing that the Texas law interferes with federal immigration law.
Similarly, critics of Iowa&#8217;s new immigration law say it interferes with the federal government and causes confusion among immigrants.
“This law ignores the fact of federal preemption, and it’s purely a political stunt in an election year that’s meant to drive fear and just perpetuate hateful campaign rhetoric,” said Erica Johnson, executive director of the Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice, according to Iowa Public Radio.

Mark Stringer, the executive director of the Iowa ACLU called the immigration measure “one of the most extreme, discriminatory, and unconstitutional anti-immigrant bills in the country.”
Proponents of state laws cracking down on illegal immigration argue that the federal government under President Joe Biden has failed in its duty to secure the southern border and protect American citizens, adding that states have a constitutional right and duty to protect themselves from what many view as an invasion of the U.S southern border.
Since Biden took office, Customs and Border Protection has reported around eight million <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/stats/southwest-land-border-encounters" target="_blank" rel="noopener">migrant encounters</a> at the U.S. southwest border and nearly two million &#8220;<a href="https://homeland.house.gov/2023/12/20/border-sector-chiefs-confirm-operational-impacts-of-border-chaos-increased-gotaways-closed-checkpoints-and-empowered-cartels/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gotaways</a>.&#8221; Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants have also been flown and bused across the country after crossing the southern border.

Iowa appealed on Friday a federal judge’s ruling blocking a statute intended to keep sexually explicit books out of schools and prevent elementary school students from being taught gender ideology in the classroom. 
The <a href="https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/IACIO/2024/01/12/file_attachments/2746230/66%20D%20-%20Notice%20of%20Appeal%20%28ISS%29%20240112.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appeal</a> to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit comes after federal Judge Stephen Locher <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-blocks-iowa-law-keeping-sexually-explicit-books-out-of-schools" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled against the law</a> last month, calling it “unreasonable” and “puritanical.” The appeal from Governor Kim Reynolds (R-IA) was filed by state Attorney General Brenna Bird. 
“When we send our kids to school, we trust that their innocence will be protected. I’m glad to say that we are today appealing the district court’s decision in order to uphold Iowa’s law that keeps sexually explicit books out of the hands of our kids in school. Iowa’s law is clear; sexually explicit books and materials have no place in our elementary school classrooms or libraries,” Bird said in a statement.
 “As a mom, I share parents’ concerns and remain committed to keeping our schools a safe place for kids to learn and grow. With this appeal, we will continue the fight to protect Iowa families and to uphold Iowa’s law in Court,” she added. 
The majority of judges on the Eighth Circuit have been appointed by Republican presidents. 
The law, <a href="https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/publications/LGE/90/SF496.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate File 496</a>, was challenged in two federal lawsuits by a number of <a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/education/2024/01/12/gov-kim-reynolds-appeals-judges-block-on-iowas-book-ban-law/72204242007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">groups</a>, including an LGBT education group, the Iowa State Education Association, publisher Penguin Random House as well as authors John Green and Jodi Picoult. In addition to requiring parental notification if a child claims to be transgender, the law also aims to get gender ideology out of the classroom for those in kindergarten through sixth grade. 
“A school district shall not provide any program, curriculum, test, survey, questionnaire, promotion, or instruction relating to gender identity or sexual orientation to students in kindergarten through grade six,” the law says.

Locher, an appointee of President Joe Biden, said that the law was too broad in his decision to strike it down. 
“It requires the wholesale removal of every book containing a description or visual depiction of a ‘sex act,’ regardless of context,” he <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/29/us/iowa-book-ban-blocked.html#:~:text=A%20federal%20judge%20in%20Iowa,books%20in%20any%20reasonable%20way.%E2%80%9D">said</a>. “The underlying message is that there is no redeeming value to any such book even if it is a work of history, self-help guide, award-winning novel or other piece of serious literature. In effect, the Legislature has imposed a puritanical ‘pall of orthodoxy’ over school libraries.”
In recent years, Republican-led state legislatures across the country have passed bills to keep gender ideology and sexually explicit out of classrooms as parents push for more oversight of educational materials and curriculum.

A federal judge in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/iowa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Iowa</a> on Friday blocked a law intended to keep sexually explicit books out of schools and prevent elementary school students from being taught gender ideology in the classroom. 
Judge Stephen Locher, appointed by President Joe Biden, ruled that an Iowa law, approved by Republican Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kim-reynolds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kim Reynolds</a> earlier this year, was “unreasonable” and “puritanical.” The judge did allow a provision in the law that required schools to tell parents if a child was using pronouns different to the child’s biological sex. 
“It requires the wholesale removal of every book containing a description or visual depiction of a ‘sex act,’ regardless of context,” Locher <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/29/us/iowa-book-ban-blocked.html#:~:text=A%20federal%20judge%20in%20Iowa,books%20in%20any%20reasonable%20way.”" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “The underlying message is that there is no redeeming value to any such book even if it is a work of history, self-help guide, award-winning novel or other piece of serious literature. In response to the decision, Reynolds <a href="https://governor.iowa.gov/press-release/2023-12-29/gov-reynolds-statement-sf-496-court-ruling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that she was disappointed and that children should not be exposed to sexual content and radical gender theory.
“Instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation has no place in kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms. And there should be no question that books containing sexually explicit content — as clearly defined in Iowa law — do not belong in a school library for children,” she said. “The fact that we’re even arguing these issues is ridiculous. The real debate should be about why society is so intent on over-sexualizing our young children. It’s wrong, and I will continue to do my part to protect their innocence.”

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird <a href="https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/newsroom/attorney-general-bird-response-to-court-ruling-on-law-to-prohibit-inappropriate-books-in-schools" target="_blank" rel="noopener">promised</a> to keep fighting in a statement on the ruling. 
“I am deeply disappointed in the district court’s decision today. Sexually explicit books do not belong in our elementary-school libraries or classrooms. Not only is it common sense, it’s the law. As Attorney General, I will keep on fighting to protect families, enforce the law, and keep inappropriate books out of the hands of children in school,” she said. 
In recent years, gender ideology has crept into schools across the country, even in conservative areas, prompting parents to push for more oversight and accountability for teachers.

The man who destroyed a Satanic holiday display in the Iowa State Capitol on Thursday has been arrested and charged, police said.
Michael Cassidy, 35, was arrested after allegedly beheading a Baphomet statue put up last week by the Satanic Temple of Iowa, the Iowa State Police <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/satanic-display-inside-iowa-state-capitol-destroyed-man-charged-officials" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed</a> to Fox News.
He has been charged with 4th-degree criminal mischief.
Cassidy, a former Navy pilot who now works as a flight instructor and was previously a Mississippi congressional candidate, <a href="https://republicsentinel.com/articles/exclusive-christian-tears-down-and-beheads-satan-shrine-in-iowa-capitol?fbclid=IwAR3IAvn-ot35lKKtSK6UhP1YOt7PFHyjQdEWQCCzjMiB26OWyYC8y197168" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explained</a> to The Republic Sentinel why he decided to destroy the Satanic display.
“I saw this blasphemous statue and was outraged,” Cassidy told the outlet. “My conscience is held captive to the word of God, not to bureaucratic decree. And so I acted.”
“The world may tell Christians to submissively accept the legitimization of Satan, but none of the founders would have considered government sanction of Satanic altars inside Capitol buildings as protected by the First Amendment,” Cassidy added. “Anti-Christian values have steadily been mainstreamed more and more in recent decades, and Christians have largely acted like the proverbial frog in the boiling pot of water.”
After being charged, Cassidy posted a Bible verse to social media on Thursday evening.

She said that it was key for Americans to choose a president who was disciplined and put the country first in the face of adversity, and she said DeSantis&#8217; record on how he handled the pandemic was one of the key reasons she decided to endorse him.
&#8220;I have a little bit of a unique perspective, as governor, I&#8217;ve seen it,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I was there with him during one of the most challenging and crazy times in our history. And while COVID might seem like a thing of the past, and that it&#8217;s behind us, and believe me, we hope it is, we should not and we cannot forget because it showed us how our leaders respond to a true crisis. And more importantly, it tells us how they&#8217;ll respond to the next one, and there will be a next one.&#8221;
&#8220;The pressure to shut down to &#8216;shelter in place&#8217; to keep our kids out of school was on believable and it came from every corner, even from the White House,&#8221; she said referring to the Trump administration. &#8220;You know, most leaders, they buckled under that pressure. They listened to Fauci instead of the real science, but there was one man running for president who did not: Ron DeSantis.&#8221;

&#8220;Reynolds plans to speak at DeSantis’ predebate rally Monday as well as a Davenport meet-and-greet Tuesday morning,&#8221; the Des Moines Register reported. &#8220;She will then fly to Miami to help him fundraise around Wednesday’s debate.&#8221;

DeSantis has already campaigned in 87 of Iowa&#8217;s 99 counties and <a href="https://floridapolitics.com/archives/639583-ron-desantis-touts-iowa-caucus-commitments/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a> he is further ahead right now with securing commitments from people who are going to caucus for him than the last few Republicans who won the state&#8217;s presidential primary were at this same point.
Her endorsement comes as Trump faces mounting legal troubles in multiple criminal cases against him, including three former attorneys who have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ex-trump-attorney-jenna-ellis-pleads-guilty-in-election-interference-case-in-georgia">flipped</a> against him in one case alone.
While speaking to reporters late last month, DeSantis said that Reynolds&#8217; endorsement would be a &#8220;huge get&#8221; for his campaign.
“I think what she’s been able to do in Iowa has really been a model for how people should govern,” DeSantis said. “Clearly, I think she could have a really significant impact. And I think any candidate running would be a fool not to want to have the support of Reynolds.”
DeSantis has courted Reynolds for months and has defended her from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-lashes-out-at-iowa-governor-kim-reynolds">attacks</a> from Trump, who has accused Reynolds of being insufficiently loyal.

Two Republican governors pushed back Tuesday on former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> calling heartbeat laws &#8220;a terrible thing&#8221; in a recent interview.
Trump made the remarks during a Sunday <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-hits-desantis-for-signing-heartbeat-law-a-terrible-thing-and-a-terrible-mistake" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with Kristen Welker on NBC News’ “Meet The Press” when pressed on specifics regarding at what point he believes that abortion should be banned.
After talking on the matter for several minutes, Trump took a shot at his top challenger for the GOP presidential nomination, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, over the issue.
“I mean, DeSanctus is willing to sign a five-week and six-week ban,” Trump said.
“Would you support that?” Welker asked. “You think that goes too far?”
“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” Trump answered.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ga-governor-signs-heartbeat-bill-law-defying-hank-berrien" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> a heartbeat bill into law back in 2019, responded to Trump&#8217;s remarks in a statement to The Daily Wire.
&#8220;There’s nothing ‘terrible’ about standing up for life,&#8221; Kemp said. &#8220;In addition to passing the heartbeat bill, Georgia has proudly protected and valued life through implementing adoption and foster care reform, and combatting human trafficking — and will continue to do so as long as I’m governor.&#8221;

Soon after Kemp made his statement, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds also released a statement.
&#8220;It’s never a &#8216;terrible thing&#8217; to protect innocent life,&#8221; Reynolds wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. &#8220;I’m proud of the fetal heartbeat bill the Iowa legislature passed and I signed in 2018 and again earlier this year.&#8221;
DeSantis, who had responded on Monday to Trump&#8217;s comment, replied to Reynolds&#8217; statement on X, writing: &#8220;I applaud Governor @KimReynoldsIA and the Iowa legislature for promoting a culture of life. Donald Trump is wrong to attack the heartbeat bill as &#8216;terrible.&#8217; Standing for life is a noble cause.&#8221;

A few other Republican governors responded by issuing statements signaling their unwavering support of the pro-life movement.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee responded to a request for comment from The Daily Wire by saying: &#8220;My deeply held conviction is that protecting every life — including the life of any unborn child — is a matter of human dignity, not a matter of politics. In Tennessee, we are committed to protecting the dignity of the unborn while also ensuring that mothers, children and families have access to critical resources and our strongest support.&#8221;
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt told The Daily Wire: &#8220;I promised Oklahomans that as governor I would sign every piece of pro-life legislation that came across that desk. I have kept that promise and I will continue to keep that promise. In Oklahoma, we will always stand up for life.&#8221;
The office of North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum responded by explaining North Dakota&#8217;s laws on abortion, but did not directly address Trump&#8217;s remarks.
The remaining Republican governors who, as <a href="https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/LSB/LSB10779">identified</a> by the Congressional Research Service, have either signed heartbeat laws or whose states already have them, have not yet responded.
DeSantis initially <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/desantis-slams-trump-for-calling-heartbeat-law-terrible-what-trump-said-was-terrible">responded</a> to Trump&#8217;s direct criticism of him on Monday during a radio interview in Iowa with O. Kay Henderson, stating, “Protecting babies with heartbeats is not terrible. Donald Trump may think it’s terrible, but I think protecting babies with heartbeats is noble and just, and I’m proud to have signed the heartbeat bill in Florida. And I know Iowa has similar legislation.”
“I don’t know how you can even make the claim that you’re somehow pro-life if you’re criticizing states for enacting pro-life protections for babies that have heartbeats,” he continued. “And so I thought him saying that those bills were terrible, I think, was a terrible statement, and I think it’s a window into how he’s changing as he’s running this campaign. I think he’s changing in a way that is not consistent with the values of the people in Iowa.”
