Kevin O’Leary recently raised a stink when he <a href="https://x.com/CryptoMikli/status/2056365855508693008">suggested</a> that young people save money rather than spend it on dining out. More specifically, he said, “Can’t stand it when I see kids who are making 70 grand a year spending $28 for lunch. I mean, that’s just stupid. Think about that in the context of that being put into an index and making 8-10% a year for the next 50 years.”
Predictably, the internet was not pleased. Replies variously blamed boomers for making things up, boomers for driving up the cost of lunch, and boomers for destroying the economy through inflation. Which, okay, whatever. The cause isn’t really germane to his point, which is that reality exists, and the reality of spending a bunch of money on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tsp2bC0Db8o">slop bowls</a> makes it hard to save and build wealth.
It also overlooks the fact that it’s really easy to cook simple meals and pack them in a lunchbox. Failing that, a used Walmart bag or even just a Tupperware dish will suffice. Seriously, you don’t need to eat a mediocre $15 burrito bowl every day to survive, particularly when you could, you know, make your own burrito bowl for much cheaper.
People eating out every day are not living it up, ordering a steak and a few martinis. They’re grabbing good enough food and eating at their desks, depositing a disgusting amount of crumbs in their keyboards as they pretend to pay attention to meetings. Mr. Wonderful is right to call them out. He’s trying to help. He’s making a very valid point about spending.
Let’s round down and extrapolate some numbers to prove his point. Perhaps $28 is a little high. One can eat inside Cava and tip for around $20. Let’s go on the low end and assume that someone works 47 weeks per year after vacation and holidays. That’s 235 days per year, which means spending would be $4,700 annually.
With just one year of brown bagging it, that would produce a return of $376. As such, bring on the avocado toast! But, actually, the thing about investing is that it isn’t gambling. You have to set it and forget it. By the end of year 50, that $4,700 would be around $221,000, and that’s only investing once. If you invested that $100 a week for 47 weeks per year for 50 years into an index earning 8%, by the end of year 50, you’d have something in the neighborhood of $2.8 million. You know what you can afford a lot of with $2.8 million?
Granted, you would still have to spend on food, so let’s look at how much it would cost per week to make your own slop bowls. You’ll want some protein. As of this exact moment, boneless, skinless chicken thighs in my area are going for $3.72/pound. Three pounds will cover five days, so we’re sitting at roughly $12 after tax. Throw in a 32-ounce bag of rice, and you’re up to $14. Add a few avocados at $0.60 each, and you’re up to $16. A few cans of black beans will add around $4. So, for roughly the price of one meal in Cava, you’ve got a week’s worth of bowls. It’s pretty Spartan, though, bordering on subsistence living.
So, let’s kick it up a notch, because this isn’t hard. Ovens exist. Skillets exist. Air fryers and Instant Pots exist. The internet exists. AI can be used for more than ridiculous memes and videos designed to fool boomers. I asked ChatGPT, for example, to put together a monthly meal prep plan based on Cava, Chipotle, and Sweet Green, including all ingredients and recipes. The costs jump up to $50 a week, but look at <a href="https://chatgpt.com/share/6a0e0648-63f0-83ea-83b7-51b0c67ba08c">how easily this can be done</a> and how much you can save to put in that index fund.
Of course, there are also peanut butter sandwiches and Ruffles, a meal I often took to my first corporate job. Tuna fish with fresh lemon, an avocado with salt, lemon, and hot sauce, and fresh cucumber slices with salt and lemon juice is another meal I’ve eaten many times while sitting at a desk. A grilled chicken breast can be substituted for the tuna. Crackers are optional for both.
Nice meals out are nice. They’re a treat for times when you’re craving something that doesn’t make sense to make because there are too many inputs, like an Italian sub. Or they’re for a celebration. Or because first dates usually don’t want to come to your house. Eating out isn’t a requirement for living; eating is.
So, instead of getting mad at O’Leary for reminding you that you’re not an oligarch, stack that paper and work on becoming one. Did Bernie Sanders stop at complaining about millionaires and billionaires? No, he kept working until he was a millionaire so he could save words and focus on billionaires. If Bernie can do it, including <a href="https://www.cornucopia.org/2016/02/foods-presidential-candidates-love-the-most-scrambled-eggs-mexican-food-and-more/">bragging</a> that he’s “pretty good on the grill,” so can you. Now get out there and start shopping, just make sure you <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/whole-foods-has-its-own-jail-for-shoplifters-just-ask-the-sushi-thief">pay for everything</a>.

Díaz-Balart pressed O&#8217;Leary further on how to deal with China, noting that the Chinese government did not seem particularly concerned about the impact of a trade war on people they routinely oppress.

Keeping people employed and fed. &#8230; When you shut down a factory, you put thousands, if not tens of thousands of people, unemployed in China! They take burning torches just like in the Frankenstein movie up to the castle. And that&#8217;s a bad outcome for the Supreme Leader! He knows that,&#8221; O&#8217;Leary said, arguing that China needed the United States market and that negative pressure on the Chinese government was the only way to bring China around, once and for all. &#8220;Let&#8217;s squeeze them, squeeze them, squeeze them. Just keep going and going and going until they start complying. That&#8217;s what I want!&#8221;

&#8220;Shark Tank&#8221; judge Kevin O&#8217;Leary said on Wednesday that President Donald Trump was taking it too easy on Communist China when he introduced a 104% tariff on Chinese imports. In the days since the 104% tariff was first announced, both China and the United States have implemented retaliatory tariffs bring the total tax on Chinese imports to 125%.
O&#8217;Leary explained during a CNN appearance that China had flouted the rules of fair trade for far too long, and that it was past time for someone to force their hand — in fact, he advocated a 400% tariff on all Chinese goods.
He shared a clip of his appearance via X, along with the following caption: &#8220;104% tariffs on China are not enough. I&#8217;m advocating 400%. I do business with China. They don&#8217;t play by the rules. They&#8217;ve been in the WTO for decades. They have never abided by any of the rules they agreed to when they came in for decades. Trump announced on Wednesday that he was setting tariffs against China at 125%, following China&#8217;s retaliation against the tariffs imposed on most nations under the president&#8217;s &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; plan.
&#8220;Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable,&#8221; Trump announced via Truth Social.
&#8220;Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Thank you for your attention to this matter!&#8221;
While a number of other countries had responded to the &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; tariffs by calling for negotiations — which was exactly what Trump had said he wanted — China had opted instead to retaliate with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/china-hits-back-with-massive-retaliatory-tariff-after-trumps-104-midnight-tariff-goes-into-effect" target="_blank" rel="noopener">84% tariffs</a>.

“Shark Tank” personality and investor Kevin O’Leary appeared on CNN Wednesday night and discussed Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz celebrating Tesla stock going down. 
“There’s this thing on my phone, I know some of you know this, on the iPhone. They’ve got that little stock app,” Walz said at an event Tuesday evening in a clip he <a href="https://x.com/Tim_Walz/status/1902197581586833643">posted</a> on X.
“I added Tesla to it to give me a little boost during the day,” Walz said as the crowd erupted in laughter. “225 and dropping!” he exclaimed.
Walz, the former vice presidential candidate, neglected to mention that as recently as last summer, Minnesota had 1.6 million shares of Tesla in its retirement fund and 211,000 shares of Tesla in its non-retirement fund.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded with a jab of his own, writing, “Sometimes when I need a little boost, I look at the @JDVance portrait in the @WhiteHouse and thank the Lord,” alongside a praying hands emoji.
Tesla stock is currently down 34.6% compared to last month. There has been a concerted effort by the Left to attack Musk and to vandalize Tesla vehicles in public. 
“They’re criminal!” O’Leary said of what’s been going on. “That poor guy didn’t check his portfolio and his own pension plan for state,” he said when host Abby Phillip mentioned Walz’s glee over Tesla stock dropping. “It’s beyond stupid what he did&#8230; He doesn&#8217;t check the wellbeing of his own constituency? That&#8217;s their investment fund, what a bozo!&#8221;

O’Leary appeared on “CNN NewsNight” to debate Angela Rye, former executive director and general counsel to the Congressional Black Caucus. She argued that Musk’s donations were criminal. 
“[Musk] literally says thank you to the members who introduce articles of impeachment,” Rye said. “That is an exchange of value. That is a violation.”
“The oldest profession on Earth is not prostitution — it’s politicians raising money,” O’Leary shot back.
“That has happened from the beginning of time. That’s going on forever, and will continue forever,” he continued. “This issue around judges, this is pure politics … No laws have been broken. You don’t like it? Too bad.”
Walz’s followers were also confused as to why he would root for an American company to fail even if he disagreed with the CEO politically.
“What is wrong with you,” one person <a href="https://x.com/calleymeans/status/1902217909889274138">replied</a>. “You’re actively rooting for an innovative American company to fail? The cars are American made and literally drive themselves.”
“You are a disgrace. I worked at Tesla for over 4 years. I know many who still work there. Tesla is one of America&#8217;s crown jewels, and you actively want it to fail,” another commenter wrote. “You should be ashamed of yourself. You don&#8217;t deserve to be anywhere near public service.”

Investor Kevin O&#8217;Leary said on Friday that he is willing to pay tens of billions of dollars for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tiktok" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TikTok</a>, the social media app that the U.S. Congress passed a law to force the sale of due to its control by the Chinese Communist Party.
&#8220;As of midnight on the 19th, any service provider — that could be an Apple, that could be an Oracle, it could be a video compression technology company that&#8217;s being paid as a consulting service, any of them — to keep this thing alive, it&#8217;s subject to [a] $5,000 a day fine times 170 million,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s over $1 billion a day.&#8221;
&#8220;So as of right now, unless the company enters into an agreement to be purchased by an American syndicate — and Biden, who’s the executive right now, waives for 90 days — this thing goes dark at midnight because who’s going to take on a billion risk at midnight?&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Who’s going to do that? What counsel would advise that? This is the most interesting, complicated, crazy situation I’ve ever been involved in. I’m really excited about it.&#8221;
When asked by Fox News host Bill Hemmer what the price tag was to buy the social media company, O&#8217;Leary responded that he was willing to pay $20 billion for it.

The Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the TikTok ban passed by Congress could go into effect this weekend, saying it did not violate the First Amendment. 
In an unassigned opinion, the court ruled that Congress was justified in passing the ban because of concerns about the Chinese government using TikTok to harvest the private data of millions of Americans. If China-based ByteDance does not sell the social media platform, the ban will go into effect on Sunday, January 19. 
“There is no doubt that, for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement, and source of community,” the court wrote. “But Congress has determined that divestiture is necessary to address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikTok’s data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary.”
While the main opinion was not signed, two concurring opinions were attached from Justice Neil Gorsuch and Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
The court said that those challenging the ban, including a group of TikTok users, did not provide any examples of the law actually curtailing their speech.
&#8220;It is not clear that the Act itself directly regulates protected expressive activity, or conduct with an expressive component. Indeed, the Act does not regulate the creator petitioners at all. And it directly regulates ByteDance Ltd. and TikTok Inc. only through the divestiture requirement,&#8221; the court wrote.

The court added that the regulations imposed by the law, which was signed by President Joe Biden in April, were content neutral.
&#8220;They impose TikTok-specific prohibitions due to a foreign adversary’s control over the platform and make divestiture a prerequisite for the platform’s continued operation in the United States,&#8221; the court wrote. &#8220;The Government also supports the challenged provisions with a content-neutral justification: preventing China from collecting vast amounts of sensitive data from 170 million U. S. TikTok users.&#8221;
The law from Congress says that TikTok will be banned as long as it is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. If it is sold to an American company, it will no longer be banned. There have been various proposals floated to save TikTok, including from &#8220;Shark Tank&#8221; investor Kevin O’Leary, who has partnered with a group called &#8220;The People&#8217;s Bid for TikTok.&#8221;

Investor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kevin-oleary">Kevin O’Leary</a> of “Shark Tank” fame recently discussed his intentions to purchase the popular social media app <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tiktok">TikTok</a>, mentioning that he’ll need President-elect <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump">Donald Trump’s</a> assistance to make it happen.
The 70-year-old Canadian <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/business">entrepreneur</a> made the remarks during a Monday appearance on Fox News&#8217; “The Story with Martha MacCallum.”
“Trump will be who we have to work with to close the deal in the months ahead. So I wanted to let him know, as well as others in his cabinet, that we’re doing this, and we’re going to need their help,” O’Leary said, per <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/kevin-oleary-buy-tiktok-shark-tank/">The Wrap</a>.
The “Shark Tank” star also posted on X about the potential purchase, saying he was “excited” to partner with former Dodgers owner Frank McCourt’s Project Liberty &#8220;to lead The People&#8217;s Bid for TikTok.&#8221;

It’s about empowering creators and small businesses. And it’s about building a platform that prioritizes PEOPLE over algorithms.”

O’Leary’s tweet included a link to the <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/globally-renowned-investor-and-entrepreneur-kevin-oleary-joining-the-peoples-bid-for-tiktok-302342948.html">press release</a> detailing his reasons for wanting to purchase the platform, which is currently owned by Chinese company Bytedance. TikTok is facing removal from Apple and Google app stores in the United States due to a federal ban signed by President Joe Biden last spring due to security concerns.
In December, Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-asks-scotus-to-pause-tiktok-ban-to-pursue-a-negotiated-resolution">petitioned</a> the Supreme Court to delay the ban from going into effect so he could have time to negotiate a potential deal. 
“It&#8217;s clear that our visions for a people-centered, American-owned platform are closely aligned, and our combined efforts will give a significant boost to The People&#8217;s Bid as the January 19 deadline for a sale of TikTok quickly approaches,” McCourt said in a statement noted in the press release.
“Kevin and I, along with the thousands of supporters who have come forward to back The People&#8217;s Bid, firmly believe we can build a better TikTok – one that protects our national security and becomes a safe, secure platform that millions of people on the app will trust. We look forward to working with President-elect Trump to save TikTok.&#8221;

Entrepreneur and media personality Kevin O’Leary warned this week that if Vice President Kamala Harris wins the upcoming presidential election, she could turn into America&#8217;s version of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/justin-trudeau" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Justin Trudeau</a>.
O&#8217;Leary made the remarks during a Friday interview on NewsNation where he claimed that Harris — whom he said was the &#8220;it kid&#8221; — was a &#8220;blank sheet of paper&#8221; regarding her policy positions, despite numerous extreme left-wing positions that she held during her failed 2020 presidential campaign.
&#8220;I don’t blame her for not bringing up policy. She should just rant and rave, saying &#8216;I’m not Trump&#8217; until August 7 because she’s raising so much money,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But then, she’s got to talk policy, and I don’t know what that looks like and nobody does because she’s like a blank sheet of paper.&#8221;
He said that the last &#8220;it kid&#8221; he saw in politics was far-Left Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has overseen the rapid decline of America&#8217;s northern neighbor.
“There’s an example of an &#8216;it kid&#8217; up in Canada a few years ago, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Nobody looked at his background, nobody looked at his policies. He was the &#8216;it kid.&#8217; That country is on its knees! He wiped it out!&#8221;
&#8220;Are Americans basically going to hire or basically bring a president that’s another Justin Trudeau?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;I hope not.&#8221;
