President Donald Trump said on Monday evening that he is endorsing two Republican candidates running for governor in Arizona, calling them both &#8220;terrific people.&#8221;
Trump previously threw his support behind Karrin Taylor Robson, an Arizona businesswoman who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-backed-arizona-businesswoman-launches-bid-for-governor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched her campaign</a> in February, leaning into the president&#8217;s endorsement. Now, Trump is also expressing support for Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) after the congressman jumped into the race in late January.

During a speech at Turning Point USA&#8217;s AmericaFest in December, Trump said that Robson would have his &#8220;support&#8221; if she entered the race. Robson played a clip of Trump&#8217;s remarks in her announcement video.

Both Robson and Biggs are seeking to unseat Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs next year. Robson also ran for governor in 2022, falling just short of Republican Kari Lake in the GOP primary. Lake went on to lose to Hobbs in the general election.
The president often boasts about his track record of endorsing candidates who go on to win primary and general elections, and GOP hopefuls usually look for Trump&#8217;s backing to give them a significant boost against intra-party rivals. Robson will face Republican Congressman Andy Biggs in the GOP primary. Biggs became the first Republican to enter the race in late January when he <a href="https://www.kjzz.org/politics/2025-01-27/congressman-andy-biggs-officially-enters-2026-arizona-governors-race" target="_blank" rel="noopener">made the announcement</a> at the Arizona Republican Party&#8217;s annual meeting. Both Robson and Biggs are emphasizing the importance of securing Arizona&#8217;s 370-mile-long border with Mexico.
“President Trump is back in the White House, and he means business. Arizona needs a strong governor who will help President Trump lock down our border,” the narrator says in Robson&#8217;s ad.
After Trump was elected in November, Hobbs <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dem-border-state-governor-says-she-will-buck-trumps-plan-for-mass-deportations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vowed</a> to fight his plan for mass deportations, saying she would &#8220;not tolerate efforts that are part of misguided policies that harm our communities, that threaten our communities, that terrorize our communities, and Arizona will not take part in those.&#8221;
Robson mentioned Trump numerous times in her ad and in a statement that addressed crime and the economy. The Republican candidate argued that &#8220;Katie Hobbs has made it harder to live, work, and raise a family safely in this state,&#8221; adding, “Like President Trump, I know how to create jobs. And like President Trump, I will not rest until our border is secure and Arizona families are safe.”
Republicans view Arizona as ripe for a GOP takeover after Trump defeated former Vice President Kamala Harris there by five percentage points in the 2024 election.

Arizona Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs said on Monday that she would &#8220;not tolerate&#8221; what she deems &#8220;misguided policies&#8221; when it comes to President-elect Donald Trump&#8217;s plans for mass deportations.
Hobbs&#8217; comments were in response to questions from ABC News about whether she would help the Trump administration carry out deportations of criminal illegal immigrants.
&#8220;What I will unequivocally say is that, as governor, I will not tolerate efforts that are part of misguided policies that harm our communities, that threaten our communities, that terrorize our communities, and Arizona will not take part in those,&#8221; Hobbs said.
Pressed to clarify which &#8220;misguided policies&#8221; she was referring to, Hobbs replied, &#8220;Hearing about the Trump administration&#8217;s plans for border security, the emphasis is really on these mass deportations. What we saw here today is the actual work happening at our ports of entry that are intercepting drugs, keeping those drugs off our streets, and we need more of that to secure the border.&#8221;
The Arizona governor argued that mass deportation efforts would &#8220;divert needed resources.&#8221;
&#8220;I think the diversion of law enforcement from the work that they do every day to keep our communities safe, people hiding in fear – we saw that under previous state policies here – and it harms communities. Voters in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/arizona" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arizona</a> will have the opportunity to enact broad border security measures in November as the state faces a flood of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/illegal-immigration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">illegal immigration</a> after the Republican-led state legislature passed a resolution that will put the measures on the general election ballot. 
The measures, collectively known as the “Secure the Border Act,” include provisions making illegal immigration a state crime, meaning law enforcement will be allowed to arrest illegal immigrants who enter the state. Other states, like Texas and Oklahoma, have enacted similar laws. 
“Nothing good comes from open borders,” Arizona House Speaker Ben Toma said in a statement after the House passed the measure, <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/04/us-news/arizona-moves-closer-to-making-illegal-immigration-a-state-crime/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the New York Post. “Only crime, deadly drugs, violence, unsafe communities, and an unending financial drain on American taxpayers. Yet, Democrat leaders fiercely oppose doing anything about it.”
The measure <a href="https://legiscan.com/AZ/votes/HCR2060/2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> 31-29 in the House and 16-13 in the Senate with Republicans in support and Democrats in opposition. 
The ballot initiative could drive voters concerned with illegal immigration to the polls — which could hurt President Joe Biden, who has been broadly criticized for his handling of illegal immigration, in the swing state. 
According to the <a href="https://legiscan.com/AZ/text/HCR2060/id/2995893" target="_blank" rel="noopener">text</a> of the resolution, it would empower “law enforcement to protect the public by arresting aliens who fail to enter Arizona&#8217;s southern border through official ports of entry.”
It would also create “criminal offenses for a person to knowingly present false documents to obtain public benefits or to evade workplace eligibility detection through the e-verify program” and increase “punishments for criminals who fuel the crisis at the southern border by selling fentanyl that causes the death of another person.”
Additionally, the resolution would enhance Arizona law to ensure that individuals illegally in the state would not be able to receive public benefits or become eligible for entitlement programs.

The ballot initiative will give Arizona voters a chance to bypass Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, who vetoed a bill that would have enacted similar measures earlier this year. Hobbs <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/controversial-immigration-measure-goes-arizona-ballots-biden-trump-rcna152226" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> the legislation would “demonize our communities and lead to racial profiling.” 
“Arizonans are crying out for common sense security measures,” Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake told NBC News. “I am encouraged that Arizona Republican state legislators are doing their best to deliver it — even if they have to go around Hobbs’ veto to do it.”
Record levels of illegal immigrants have poured across the border under Biden, including in Arizona. Former President Donald Trump has made securing the border a large part of his 2024 presidential campaign.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/arizona" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arizona</a> Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs signed a repeal of the state&#8217;s 1864 abortion law on Thursday after the state&#8217;s Supreme Court ruled last month that the law, which protects unborn babies from nearly all abortions, could go into effect.
The abortion law repeal <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/arizonas-republican-controlled-senate-passes-repeal-of-states-1864-abortion-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> Arizona&#8217;s Republican-controlled legislature thanks to five Republicans — three in the state House and two in the state Senate — who voted with every Democrat. Upon signing the legislation, Hobbs said she would “do everything in [her] power to protect our reproductive freedoms,&#8221; AZ Central <a href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/legislature/2024/05/02/arizona-abortion-ban-gov-katie-hobbs-signs-1864-law-repeal/73534194007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
“Today we are doing what 23 governors and 55 legislatures refused to do, and I am so proud to be the ones that got this job done,&#8221; Hobbs said.
The state&#8217;s high court ruled in April that the 160-year-old law could go into effect. The law bans abortion in every circumstance except when the mother’s life is in danger. It also punishes anyone who aided in an abortion by two to five years in prison. Now that Hobbs has signed the repeal, state law will revert to a 15-week abortion limitation that was signed into law by former Republican Governor Doug Ducey in 2022.
The 1864 abortion law will be in effect for a short time since the repeal won&#8217;t take place until at least 90 days after the state legislature ends its legislative session. Arizona Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes, however, said her “office is exploring every option available to prevent this outrageous 160-year-old law from ever taking effect.”
Following the Arizona Supreme Court&#8217;s decision, Democrats jumped at the opportunity to blame former President Donald Trump for the law taking effect with the Biden campaign saying the near-total abortion was &#8220;enforceable because Trump ended Roe.&#8221; Some Republicans, including Trump and Arizona Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake, criticized the abortion law and called for the state&#8217;s legislature to address it.
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America supported the state law and the Arizona Supreme Court&#8217;s decision to allow its enforcement, calling it an “enormous victory for unborn children and their mothers.”

Two Republicans joined 14 Democrats to give the repeal enough votes to pass the state Senate after <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/arizona-house-passes-bill-to-repeal-1864-abortion-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">three Republicans voted</a> with Democrats in the state House last week to approve the legislation, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/arizona-abortion-1864-ban-repeal-24578e546b69ca087e01034bcaf4aa01?taid=66329bfc51aaaa000107ec96&amp;utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&amp;utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_source=Twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The final vote tally in the state Senate was 16-14.
State Sen. Jake Hoffman blasted his Republican colleagues who joined with Democrats in passing the repeal.
“It is disgusting that this is the state of the Republican Party today,” Hoffman said.
Meanwhile, Arizona Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes said the vote is “a win for freedom in our state.”
The abortion ban repeal now heads to Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs&#8217; desk, who is expected to sign it. Hobbs has <a href="https://azgovernor.gov/office-arizona-governor/news/2024/04/governor-katie-hobbs-statement-extremist-republicans-yet-again" target="_blank" rel="noopener">condemned</a> the abortion ban, saying, “A law from 1864 written by 27 men cannot be allowed to govern the lives of millions of Arizona women.&#8221;
If Hobbs signs the bill, state law will revert to a 15-week abortion limitation that was signed into law by former Republican Governor Doug Ducey in 2022. The near-total abortion ban, however, will be in effect for a limited time as the repeal won&#8217;t take place until 90 days after the end of the legislative session, which will likely be June or July, according to the AP. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, ripped the Biden administration’s handling of the ongoing illegal immigration crisis and ordered her state’s National Guard to deploy troops to the southern border Friday. 
In a statement Friday explaining her executive order, Hobbs said the Biden administration has “refused” to aid Arizona after the state&#8217;s “continued requests for assistance” to secure the border. Hobbs signed the order after the federal government closed a port of entry in Arizona earlier this month to send Customs and Border Protection agents to other parts of the southern border, AZ Central <a href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/arizona/2023/12/15/governor-katie-hobbs-sends-national-guard-to-southern-border-communities-in-arizona/71936089007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. 
The governor’s order said the Biden administration’s decision to close the port of entry has led to an “unmitigated humanitarian crisis,” putting “Arizona’s safety and commerce at risk.” 
“Yet again, the federal government is refusing to do its job to secure our border and keep our communities safe,” Hobbs said in a <a href="https://azgovernor.gov/office-arizona-governor/news/2023/12/governor-katie-hobbs-signs-executive-order-sending-arizona#:~:text=%E2%80%9CYet%20again%2C%20the%20federal%20government,the%20federal%20government%20won't." target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>. “With this Executive Order, I am taking action where the federal government won’t. But we can’t stand alone, Arizona needs resources and manpower to reopen the Lukeville crossing, manage the flow of migrants, and maintain a secure, orderly and humane border. Despite continued requests for assistance, the Biden administration has refused to deliver desperately needed resources to Arizona’s border.”
It was not immediately known how many National Guard troops the state will deploy to the border as the governor leaves that decision up to Arizona’s chief National Guard official, Adjutant General Kerry Muehlenbeck, along with the state Department of Emergency and Military Affairs, according to AZ Central. The Guard troops will assist local law enforcement with tracking down fentanyl and human traffickers along with other “enforcement activities,” per the governor’s order. 
Arizona’s Tucson sector of the border, which covers most of the state, has turned into the busiest section of the southern border, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/10/us/immigration-southern-border-arizona-mexico-biden.html#:~:text=Border%20Patrol%20agents.-,The%20Tucson%20sector%20of%20the%20border%2C%20a%20260%2Dmile%20stretch,an%20app%20called%20CBP%20One." target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> earlier this week. Illegal immigrant encounters in the Tucson sector more than doubled in October compared to last year with CBP agents encountering 55,224 migrants in October 2023 compared to 22,938 encounters in October 2022. 
With her executive order, Hobbs joins a growing list of governors seeking to curb the record number of illegal border crossings that have occurred under President Joe Biden’s watch. In October, Texas Governor Greg Abbott <a href="https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/texas-bolsters-historic-border-response-to-combat-human-smuggling#:~:text=As%20President%20Biden%20continues%20to,border%20wall%20to%20protect%20Texans." target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that the state was building sections of border wall in some counties, becoming “the first and only state in U.S. history to build its own border wall.” A month before that, 25 Republican governors <a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/immigration/border-coverage/gop-governors-demand-biden-take-border-action-joint-letter/#:~:text=All%2025%20governors%20said%20they,claim%20timelines%20and%20qualification%20rates." target="_blank" rel="noopener">demanded</a> that Biden take more action to address the porous southern border as millions of illegal immigrants make their way into the U.S. with many traveling to cities and states across the country.

Hobbs isn’t the first Democratic politician to harshly criticize the Biden administration’s handling of the illegal immigration crisis. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/arizona" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arizona</a> will pay $2.1 million to the federal government after the state was sued over a makeshift border wall made up of shipping containers to deter illegal immigration into the U.S. 
The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/department-of-justice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Justice</a> brought <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/arizona-governor-doug-ducey-will-take-down-shipping-container-border-wall-one-week-after-biden-lawsuit" target="_blank" rel="noopener">legal action</a> against Arizona in December 2022 after then-Governor Doug Ducey, a Republican, issued an executive order to begin placing shipping containers along Arizona’s border with Mexico four months earlier. After the DOJ claimed that the makeshift wall had been erected “unlawfully and without authority,” thereby “damaging the United States,” Ducey agreed to remove the barriers. 
Now Arizona <a href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/border-issues/2023/08/30/arizona-shipping-container-wall-lawsuits-expected-to-wrap-up-soon/70710370007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will pay</a> the U.S. Forest Service for environmental remediation efforts after federal officials said the containers had damaged federal land. The shipping containers had been placed along the border in Cochise and Yuma counties, where crossings have been high. The federal suit against Arizona is expected to be withdrawn after the remediation payment is complete, according to the Arizona Republic. 
“Arizona has had enough,” Ducey said in a <a href="https://archive.ph/4Zevd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> after issuing the executive order to begin placing the containers. “We can’t wait any longer. The Biden administration’s lack of urgency on border security is a dereliction of duty. For the last two years, Arizona has made every attempt to work with Washington to address the crisis on our border. Time and time again we’ve stepped in to clean up their mess. Arizonans can’t wait any longer for the federal government to deliver on their delayed promises.”

Within 11 days of Ducey’s order, 3,820 feet of the previously open border were closed with 130 shipping containers. The initiative expanded with 6,680 feet of containers stacked two high throughout Cochise County by early November. The barriers <a href="https://kjzz.org/content/1856096/final-2m-set-settle-federal-suit-over-arizona-shipping-container-border-wall" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> cost around $95 million to install and about $66 million to remove after the Biden administration sued. The containers have <a href="https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/the-shipping-containers-removed-from-arizonas-border-are-up-for-sale" target="_blank" rel="noopener">since been</a> put up for sale by the state government. 
Arizona Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs opposed the construction of the barriers, saying they were ineffective. 
“It’s not land that’s our land to put things on. That’s one problem. The containers aren’t working. There’s many pictures of people climbing over them,” she <a href="https://kjzz.org/content/1831920/gov-elect-hobbs-says-she-will-stop-construction-shipping-container-wall-border">said</a>. “It’s a political stunt. It’s a visual barrier that is not actually providing an effective barrier to entry, and I think a waste of taxpayer dollars.”

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said she would not enforce the state’s abortion laws.
In a recent interview with Capitol Media Services, the Democrat <a href="https://www.eacourier.com/news/state/mayes-says-she-wont-prosecute-violations-of-states-abortion-laws/article_6a8b4e24-1957-11ee-9a4e-b3789b65ee76.html">said</a> she would not prosecute doctors for violating any of the state’s abortion laws, including the 15-week abortion ban. 
“I have been clear that we are not going to prosecute doctors and women in the state of Arizona for abortion, period,” Mayes <a href="https://www.eacourier.com/news/state/mayes-says-she-wont-prosecute-violations-of-states-abortion-laws/article_6a8b4e24-1957-11ee-9a4e-b3789b65ee76.html">said</a>. “[Abortion] is not a place for government intervention … prosecutorial resources should not be spent on trying to put doctors in jail.’’
Mayes’ announcement comes after Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs issued an <a href="https://azgovernor.gov/office-arizona-governor/executive-order/2023-11">executive order</a> on June 23 that centralized the power to enforce abortion laws in the hands of Attorney General Mayes, stripping county prosecutors of that ability.
“The Attorney General shall assume all duties with regard to any criminal prosecution of a medical provider … for violation of any State law restricting or prohibiting abortion care … without limitation,” Hobbs’ executive order says. 
Mayes, who took office alongside Hobbs in January, justified the move, <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-arizona-became-ground-zero-for-the-abortion-rights-battle">telling</a> The Daily Beast, “This is an extraordinary situation. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned a right we had for 50 years. Arizonans elected a Democratic governor and AG who are pro-choice, and elections have consequences. Some Republicans are unhappy about it, but this is a consequence of Dobbs.”
The lead prosecutor for Maricopa County, Rachel Mitchell, said that she and other county attorneys are looking at possible litigation over the centralization of prosecuting power.
“Our current governor took an entire category of potential offenses,” Mitchell <a href="https://kjzz.org/content/1850753/maricopa-county-attorney-hobbs-abortion-related-executive-order-procedural">said</a>, “and is attempting to prevent locally elected county attorneys from reviewing and making charging decisions in those matters.”
The Phoenix-area Republican warned of a new precedent Hobbs and Mayes might set.

“What happens when another person occupies the governor’s seat and attempts this kind of power grab?” she asked. “What other set of offenses might a governor in the future not like and remove from local prosecutors?”
Mayes brushed aside the question, saying the move should be seen only in the context of abortion laws, according to the Eastern Arizona Courier.
Republicans, who hold a majority in the state legislature, also condemned Hobbs and Mayes’ actions and <a href="https://www.azmirror.com/2023/06/26/after-hobbs-order-on-abortion-prosecutions-senate-republicans-nix-plans-to-weigh-her-nominees/">canceled</a> all plans to consider Hobbs’ nominees.
“You hold the office of Governor in Arizona, not of monarch,” GOP state senators wrote in a letter to Hobbs, calling the executive order a “blatant disregard for separation of powers.”

Democratic Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed <a href="https://www.azleg.gov/legtext/56leg/1R/bills/SB1600S.pdf">legislation</a> Thursday that would protect newborns from infanticide after surviving an abortion, regardless of whether the baby is likely to survive.
&#8220;It overrides patient and clinician decision-making in complex and highly personal circumstances,&#8221; Murphy Hebert, the governor&#8217;s chief of communications, told <a href="https://tucson.com/news/local/subscriber/veto-likely-for-measure-mandating-medical-treatment-at-birth/article_9a375918-cf1c-11ed-9118-470a263d1dfe.html">Capitol Media Services</a>.
Although current state law only requires that abortionists offer life-saving care to those babies born alive after 20 weeks, State Senate Republicans advanced the Born Alive Bill in February, which amends existing law to view a fetus that survived an abortion as a legal person, granting the child the same rights and medical care as anyone else.
The bill also changes the language of a &#8220;fetus&#8221; to &#8220;infant&#8221; and &#8220;delivered&#8221; to &#8220;born alive.&#8221;
Those who fail to comply could face legal consequences.
Lawmakers included an exception, which would have allowed a parent or guardian authority to refuse consent to medical treatment or surgical care that would only &#8220;temporarily prolong the act of dying when death is imminent.&#8221;
Sen. Janae Shamp, who sponsored the bill, <a href="https://www.azmirror.com/blog/gop-pushes-born-alive-bill-to-require-care-in-rare-abortion-cases/">said</a>, &#8220;I will always stand to protect those who cannot protect themselves.&#8221;
House Republicans in Arizona followed suit, approving the legislation 32-28, with the support of Democrat Rep. Lydia Hernandez of Phoenix.
Republican Rep. Justin Heap, however, said the bill comes down to one question after a baby survives an abortion.
&#8220;If a baby is born alive, even if it is sick or troubled, do we make efforts to try to save that person and treat them with the same dignity we would any other human being in our hospitals, or do we leave them on a table to die?'&#8221; Heap said, according to local media. &#8220;It is repellent. It is evil.&#8221;
Democratic Rep. Amish Shah of Phoenix, a credentialed emergency room physician, said doctors face complex situations that could put them at risk of breaking the law.
&#8220;When the threat of criminal penalties applies in a very subjective, harrowing situation like this, people are going to say, &#8216;I&#8217;m going to have to do something that I wouldn&#8217;t otherwise do with regard to medical judgment,'&#8221; he said.
&#8220;But when would a medical code ever end?&#8221; Shah said. &#8220;It would never end because it ends when I subjectively decide that the medical code ends and we stop the CPR process. So anybody can disagree with that and say, &#8216;Dr. Shaw, you&#8217;re guilty of a criminal violation.'&#8221;
Arizona Department of Health Services reported at least 18 babies survived abortions in the state in <a href="https://www.azdhs.gov/documents/preparedness/public-health-statistics/abortions/2020-arizona-abortion-report.pdf">2020</a> and <a href="https://www.azdhs.gov/documents/preparedness/public-health-statistics/abortions/2021-arizona-abortion-report.pdf">2021</a>, with nearly 400 unborn babies aborted after 21 weeks gestation.
Cathi Herrod, the president of the pro-life Center for Arizona Policy, opposed the governor&#8217;s decision to veto the bill, calling the act &#8220;cruel&#8221; and &#8220;heartless.&#8221;

Herrod further issued a <a href="https://twitter.com/azpolicy/status/1644071227710111744">statement</a> accusing Hobbs of playing &#8220;coy&#8221; during her campaign &#8220;but now her radical views are on full display; she just gave the okay to infanticide.&#8221;
&#8220;Hobbs vetoed a bill today that would have outlawed the intentional hastening of a newborn&#8217;s death,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The veto allows healthcare workers to withhold needed medical care from newborns, sanctioning death by neglect.&#8221;
When newborns experience life-threatening conditions, she said, medical professionals sometimes put the baby on a &#8220;slow code,&#8221; which means they don&#8217;t get the medically appropriate treatment babies without the condition get.
&#8220;Death by neglect is not healthcare,&#8221; she said, adding the bill would have ensured those newborns got the chance to beat the odds and live. &#8220;It is what every human deserves and what every parent expects from healthcare providers entrusted with the lives of new babies.
&#8220;Governor Hobbs has just shown her true colors; she is more devoted to her political special interest groups than she is to serving all Arizonans, even the most vulnerable and needy,&#8221; she added.
The Daily Wire reached out to Gov. Hobbs for comment on the veto but did not receive a response.

Josselyn Berry, press secretary for Democratic Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, has resigned after posting an inflammatory tweet suggesting “transphobes” should be gunned down in the wake of a woman who identified as transgender killing six people at a Christian school in Nashville.
Local Arizona <a href="https://www.azfamily.com/2023/03/29/gov-hobbs-press-secretary-resigns-after-controversial-tweet-following-nashville-mass-shooting/">media</a> reported that Berry&#8217;s resignation came after she faced pressure from those close to her and from other lawmakers.
&#8220;The Governor does not condone violence in any form,&#8221; a statement from Hobbs&#8217; office said. &#8220;This administration holds mutual respect at the forefront of how we engage with one another.&#8221;
&#8220;The post by the Press Secretary is not reflective of the values of the administration,&#8221; the statement added. &#8220;The Governor has received and accepted the resignation of the Press Secretary.&#8221;
The GIF, taken from the 1980 film “Gloria,” tweeted by Berry showed actress Gena Rowlands wielding two pistols and was captioned “Us when we see transphobes.” It was posted Monday, even as the nation mourned the murders of three 9-year-old children and three adults, killed at the Presbyterian-run Covenant School in Music City by a 28-year-old woman who was then killed by heroic police.
Berry tweeted earlier, “If you work in the progressive community and are transphobic, you’re not progressive.”

The Nashville shooter, a former student at the school, carried two rifles and one handgun into the Covenant School where she shot and killed six people before police arrived on the scene and killed her within minutes. Police said the shooter legally purchased seven guns from five different stores. Her parents, who said they did not want her to own any guns, acknowledged that they knew she had previously sold a firearm but did not know she owned others, police said.
Authorities also revealed on Tuesday that the shooter was undergoing care for an undisclosed “emotional disorder.” A source close to the family told The Daily Beast that the shooter was also autistic but was “high-functioning.”
Police said they searched her parents’ home and found a detailed map of the school along with a manifesto. On Monday, Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake called the shooting a “targeted attack” and said authorities have a theory on the shooter’s motive, but they are not ready to share it yet.

As Roberts pointed out in a column, the restricted access deprived reporters the ability to ask questions of officials who are now leading the state. Others who took office on Monday included Democrats Adrian Fontes as secretary of state and Kris Mayes as attorney general.
Roberts also noted Monday was a state holiday and Hobbs will participate in a ceremonial inauguration Thursday.
