The lion’s share of tributes pouring in for Lindsey Graham, who died unexpectedly over the weekend at 71, will rightly focus on his commitment to bolstering American national security. But there’s another aspect of his legacy that warrants celebration and reflection.
In between his crusades to seat President Donald Trump’s nominees and defend democracy abroad, the late senator from South Carolina led one of the last true efforts to fix American health care. With his death, the last of the Republican health care reformers is gone. We ought to reflect on this fact as we honor his life of public service.
Graham was one of the earliest and most vocal opponents of the Affordable Care Act. &#8220;A government-run, government-controlled system will increase costs, reduce patient choice, and eventually lead to rationing of care,” <a href="https://www.lgraham.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=A7BA46CB-802A-23AD-4475-D1E6ACB08CBF" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Graham said</a> after President Barack Obama unveiled his signature healthcare proposal in 2009. A year later, Graham lamented the damage Obamacare’s passage had done to American health care and the legislative process, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/transcript/graham-well-has-been-poisoned-by-health-care-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying</a>, “the well has been poisoned.”
In the years that followed, Graham never gave up the fight. But unlike many of his colleagues, he did more than occasionally call for “repeal and replace.” In 2017, a succession of GOP reform bills fell in rapid succession, ending when Graham’s friend, Senator John McCain, famously gave a <a href="https://www.npr.org/2017/07/27/539907467/senate-careens-toward-high-drama-midnight-health-care-vote" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“thumbs down”</a> to the Health Care Freedom Act of 2017.
Undeterred, Graham joined with Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy to introduce an amendment to a budget reconciliation bill that would come to be known, colloquially, as “Graham-Cassidy.” The package would have taken all the money that Obamacare allocated for premium credits and Medicaid expansion — $1.2 trillion over six years — and distributed it to the states through block grants.
“The Graham-Cassidy plan is built on the premise that the federal government should remove itself from many of the difficult policy decisions concerning how health insurance is subsidized and regulated,” the American Enterprise Institute’s James Capretta and Joseph Antos <a href="https://www.healthaffairs.org/content/forefront/graham-cassidy-plan-sweeping-changes-compressed-time-frame" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> at the time. The bill, they said, “would provide substantial flexibility to the states to design entirely different ways of subsidizing and regulating health insurance in the individual market.”
The bill would have saved taxpayer money while giving more resources directly to states. It would have helped lawmakers <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/medicaid-millionaires-how-the-feds-pay-immigrants-billions-to-hang-out-with-their-families" target="_blank" rel="noopener">crack down on fraud</a>. And, perhaps most shockingly in retrospect, it would have <a href="https://www.finance.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/25SEP2017SenCassidySTMNT.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guaranteed access</a> to affordable coverage for Americans with pre-existing conditions. Graham-Cassidy would have allowed every state to innovate and design competitive insurance marketplaces that fit their unique needs, essentially removing Obamacare’s inefficiencies and problems without hurting the <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/2017/09/graham-cassidy-health-care-reform-not-obamacare-lite-better-care-reconciliation-act-lindsey-graham-bill-cassidy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">safety net</a>.
There was a lot more to Graham-Cassidy — it repealed the individual mandate, capped federal Medicaid contributions, among other things — but the crux of the bill was returning control to the states. Today we tend to dismiss this kind of policy as a cop-out. But at the time, returning control to the states was <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/04/obamacare-trump-should-let-states-experiment-with-fixes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">seen on the Right</a> as the best way to fix Obamacare. Graham was no fan of the ACA, as we saw. But he understood that a straight repeal was likely impossible, and instead focused his efforts on reform, giving relief to Americans priced out of the individual market and giving freedom to the states.
Graham was one of the last, but certainly not the only, Republican who affixed his name to a smart healthcare reform bill. Republican Senators Tom Coburn (OK), Richard Burr (NC), and Orrin Hatch (Utah) introduced their <a href="https://www.aei.org/articles/the-burr-coburn-hatch-proposal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eponymous reform bill</a> in 2014. When Coburn retired from the Senate later that year, Congressman Fred Upton (MI) <a href="https://www.healthaffairs.org/content/forefront/unpacking-burr-hatch-upton-plan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">took his spot</a> on the legislation.
Neither version of the bill passed, and all of its sponsors have moved on. <a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/cincinnatus-of-the-plains" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Coburn died in 2020</a>, and Hatch followed two years later. Burr retired in 2022, Upton in 2023. And <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/voters-decide-fate-of-senator-who-voted-to-convict-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cassidy lost his primary</a> just this year, in a large part because he continued pushing nuanced but increasingly unpopular health care policies well into President Trump’s second term.
Republicans have yet to replace Graham and his fellow reformers. McCain’s no vote on Obamacare repeal temporarily chilled Republican reform efforts. Shortly thereafter, the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent election of Joe Biden would fundamentally reshape American health policy for the worse. The Republican Party, long willing to push for entitlement reform, fell captive to populist members and leaders who pledged to never cut Medicare and Medicaid. The ongoing vaccine debate has made hating the pharmaceutical industry a rare area of bipartisan agreement, a change that has all but ended any push for innovation or reform.
The result is that no one wants to fix health care anymore. Republicans are scared to upset the status quo, and Democrats, realizing that they’ve essentially won the war, have mostly pumped the brakes on their more radical attempts to push American health care to the Left, perhaps the last thing that would have motivated Republicans to make another push for reform.
Graham’s death did not cause or hasten any of these developments. But it is a stark reminder of what Republicans have lost, in the Senate and elsewhere. Graham was one of the last senators who consistently acted on the courage of his convictions, who was willing to do the complicated, ugly, and often unpopular work of real legislating and serious policymaking. His party changed and public opinion turned, but Lindsey Graham never stopped fighting for what he knew to be right and what he knew was best for the American people. May his legacy inspire other lawmakers to pick up his mantle.

Hundreds of pro-life activists from across the country gathered on Capitol Hill Thursday to push lawmakers to take advantage of rare opportunity to defund abortion giant Planned Parenthood
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America said that over 300 activists from 39 states would meet with congressional offices to urge lawmakers to end federal funding for Planned Parenthood through the budget reconciliation process. The last time Republicans had a similar opportunity to gut Planned Parenthood of its funding was in 2017, when the effort failed by one vote in the Senate. 
Planned Parenthood was given around $699 million in taxpayer dollars in 2022-2023, according to its most recent annual report. The federal funding makes up about 34% of the organization’s annual revenue. The same report also revealed the organization ended the lives of nearly 400,000 unborn babies. 
SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser told The Daily Wire that the upcoming budget negotiations were the best chance for Republicans to defund Planned Parenthood in eight years. 
“This is the biggest pot of Planned Parenthood and big abortion funding that the federal government is involved in,” she told The Daily Wire. “We provide $2 million a day for this so that they can spend $70 million last election cycle trying to defeat our candidates, unsuccessfully, thank goodness. But most importantly they are using it to build the institution of Planned Parenthood.” 
In 2017, a similar effort fell short after the late Senator John McCain decided at the last minute not to back a reconciliation bill, leaving Republicans one vote short of defunding Planned Parenthood and repealing Obamacare. 
Dannenfelser said now was the “perfect storm” to defund Planned Parenthood, given Republican control of the White House and Congress and the efforts of the Department of Government Efficiency. She said that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA)was the best speaker pro-lifers have ever worked on this issue. 
“We’ve got a good shot,” she told The Daily Wire, saying that the lobby day was to keep a focus on the defunding so that it wouldn’t be negotiated away during the reconciliation process. The money that could be defunded through reconciliation would be $500 million to Planned Parenthood through Medicaid. 
If successful, Dannenfelser said that it would be a monumental victory for the pro-life moment and could spell doom for Planned Parenthood. 
“You take that amount of money away for one or two years, and I really do think for an already hobbled organization, it could just bring them down,” she said. 
During a Thursday rally with several Republican lawmakers and pro-life activists, Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) said that Planned Parenthood was a “murder for profit organization” that should “never receive another penny of taxpayer dollars.” She added that she was making it her mission to “defund Planned Parenthood once and for all,” saying that its status as a non-profit should be revoked. 
Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) also spoke at the event, saying that Planned Parenthood was a “baby killing machine as they abort over a thousand babies every single day.” 
Republicans have promised for years to defund Planned Parenthood after undercover videos published in 2015 showed Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of aborted baby parts and organs. Yet the abortion provider has continued to receive hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars every year. 
The pro-life activists&#8217; visit to Capitol Hill comes one day after 150 national and state pro-lifer organizations sent a <a href="https://sbaprolife.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Defund-Big-Abortion-Letter.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to members of Congress urging them to take action to fully defund Planned Parenthood.

Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, the man who became known as &#8220;Joe the Plumber&#8221; during the 2008 presidential campaign, has died after a battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 49, his family announced Sunday.
In 2008, then-candidate <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/barack-obama" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Barack Obama</a> infamously told “Joe the Plumber” that he believed, “When you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.” That interaction cemented in many Americans’ minds that Obama and the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/democratic-party" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Democratic Party</a> were quickly becoming socialist. In turn, &#8220;Joe&#8221; became somewhat of a media fixture on the Right as GOP candidate Sen. John McCain used the gaffe to highlight the differences between him and his Democratic opponent.
After that moment thrust him into unexpected fame, Joe went on to marry his wife Katie and have three children. In July 2023, Joe announced his illness.
&#8220;Our hearts are broken. We lost a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend. He made an impact on so many lives,&#8221; Katie <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/joe-plumber-rose-fame-confronting-obama-2008-campaign-trail-dead-49" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement given to Fox News.
Katie explained, &#8220;I don’t think of him as losing his battle. Because he knew Jesus, his battle was won.&#8221;
&#8220;My heart goes out to everyone whose lives are impacted by cancer,&#8221; she added. &#8220;There are so many ups and downs but we tried to find joy in every day. He fought long and hard, but is now free from pain.&#8221;
His surviving wife also described why she fell in love with him.
&#8220;When I met Joe he was already known by everyone else as ‘Joe the Plumber’ but he wrote something to me that stood out and showed me who he truly was: ‘just Joe,’&#8221; she said to Fox News. &#8220;He was an average, honorable man trying to do great things for the country he loved so deeply after being thrust into the public eye for asking a question.&#8221;
After the announcement of his passing, conservatives memorialized the man on X — formerly known as Twitter.

The official Twitter account for the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire took a beating on Friday for suggesting that people should celebrate the death of the late Senator <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/biden-claims-he-never-said-anything-negative-about-john-mccain-he-lied/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">John McCain</a> (R-AZ) as they would any other holiday.
The account posted a photo from the late senator&#8217;s funeral — with his daughter Meghan McCain standing beside the casket in tears — and added just two words by way of a caption: &#8220;Happy Holidays.&#8221;

President Joe Biden claimed on Thursday that he &#8220;never said a negative thing&#8221; about the late Senator John McCain (R-AZ) — but a quick search of his comments during the 2008 presidential campaign alone reveals that Biden&#8217;s statement is not true.
<a href="https://dailywire.com/news/joe-biden-says-the-government-needs-money-because-theres-going-to-be-another-pandemic/">Biden</a> made the statement during a White House ceremony honoring McCain along with 16 other new recipients — including champion gymnast Simone Biles and soccer star Megan Rapinoe — of the <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/bidens-medal-of-freedom-honorees-include-gold-star-dad-who-feuded-with-trump/">Presidential Medal of Freedom</a>. McCain&#8217;s award was presented posthumously to his widow, Cindy McCain, who currently serves as the U.S. Ambassador to the UN Agencies in Rome.
&#8220;I will admit to my Democratic friends I’m the guy who encouraged John to go home and run for office, for real, because I knew what incredible courage, intellect and conscience he had,&#8221; Biden said. &#8220;We ran against each other, which I didn&#8217;t like, on tickets for the highest office in the land. But during the very campaign Biden mentioned — when he was running for vice president alongside former President Barack Obama and McCain had the Republican nomination — Biden had taken several swipes at the Arizona senator.
<a href="https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/2008/10/09/angry-mccain-angers-biden/23925306007/">Criticizing McCain</a> as an &#8220;angry man&#8221; who was lashing out at Obama because he didn&#8217;t like being tied too closely to former President George W. Bush, Biden said of McCain, &#8220;You can&#8217;t call yourself a maverick when all you&#8217;ve ever been is a sidekick.&#8221; He claimed to have stolen the line from Senator Bob Casey (D-PA).
During the <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna27085394">same Florida speech</a> — in October of 2008 — Biden described &#8220;what a majority of American people are looking for — a steady hand, leadership, an optimist; not an angry man, lurching from one position to another.&#8221;
Biden also <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/sppage014-n12405001-oistl/analysis-long-time-pals-biden-and-mccain-now-spirited-foes-idUSN1240500120081013">accused McCain</a> of attempting to take &#8220;the low road to the highest office in the land,&#8221; saying that he was rooting his campaign in personal attacks — prompting some to believe that their long friendship might not recover.
&#8220;With friends like Joe Biden, John McCain doesn’t need enemies. John McCain is not going to forgive. He’s not a forgiving type,&#8221; Paul Light of New York University’s Center for the Study of Congress explained.

President Joe Biden released a list on Friday, naming seventeen people he planned to present with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in a ceremony scheduled to take place following the July 4th holiday weekend.
<a href="https://dailywire.com/news/president-joe-biden-accuses-supreme-court-of-destabilizing-the-country-by-overturning-roe-v-wade/">Biden</a> himself is a recipient of the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2017/01/12/509545778/in-surprise-send-off-president-obama-awards-biden-presidential-medal-of-freedom">Medal of Freedom</a>, the nation&#8217;s highest civilian honor, which was awarded in 2017 by former President Barack Obama to honor his service both in the Senate and in the Vice Presidency.

John McCain unleashes on the late senator&#8217;s daughter, calling her &#8220;the singularly most rotten person I have ever met.&#8221; Schmidt claims the senator&#8217;s presidential campaign was cleaved by two factions, including one led by Paul Manafort, who he said was in the pocket of Russian President Vladimir Putin via Moscow&#8217;s ally, then Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.
&#8220;Your Father tolerated his campaign chairman being in business and working for Putin through His association with Yanukovych,&#8221; Schmidt wrote. &#8220;SAME AS TRUMP.

Weaver, according to Schmidt, was horrified that McCain would allow Russian operatives to influence his campaign.

As McCain&#8217;s bid for the 2008 GOP nomination foundered, Schmidt said he was summoned to right the ship. After siding with Weaver, what Schmidt labeled &#8220;the pro-democracy faction&#8221; steered McCain to the nomination, setting him up to lose to Barack Obama.
In addition to painting himself as the campaign&#8217;s savior, Schmidt absolves himself of any blame associated with the choice of Sarah Palin as McCain&#8217;s running mate. That, he blamed on Manafort, the longtime campaign operative who would later briefly serve as Donald Trump&#8217;s campaign chairman in 2016.
&#8220;Putin’s guy, the one who was Victor Yanukovich’s henchman was in charge of ALL of the DUE DILIGENCE around Palin,&#8221; Schmidt wrote.&#8221; I wasn’t.&#8221;
In a follow-up thread, Schmidt renewed his attack on Meghan McCain by accusing her of leaking the names of her father&#8217;s associates who were not invited to his funeral.

McCain had not responded on Twitter, but the attack appears to have been sparked by her <a href="https://twitter.com/SteveSchmidtSES/status/1523066929883205632?s=20&amp;t=wHEzrV78x340s1A7dSwdCA">like of a Twitter reply</a> baselessly claiming that Schmidt had been &#8220;running a pedo racket,&#8221; as well as years of bad blood.

The controversial Lincoln Project, formed by once and former Republicans to stop Donald Trump’s re-election, has since broadened its opposition to Republicans across the nation, including mainstream Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin. It also made news this week when it blasted Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s leaked draft decision overturning Roe v. Wade. But most of its emphasis has been on political races.
The Lincoln Project was established in 2019 by a group of conservatives, including Weaver, Schmidt, and George Conway, husband of former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway. It raised tens of millions of dollars, but questions were raised about how it spent the money after it was revealed some $50 million went to longtime Republican operatives, including Rick Wilson and Schmidt.
Scandal followed when Weaver,  a married father of two, was accused in early 2021 of sending sexually charged messages to male teens. More than <a class="Link" href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/21-men-accuse-weaver-of-online-harrassment">20 men</a> came forward in accusing Weaver of harassing them online.
Weaver is no longer associated with the group.

Schmidt, a former Republican campaign strategist who worked on the late Sen. John McCain&#8217;s (R-AZ) 2008 presidential campaign, resigned from The Lincoln Project on Friday amid allegations that his fellow cofounder Weaver allegedly exhibited sexually predatory behavior toward young men in exchange for career advancement, according to <a href="https://www.axios.com/lincoln-project-co-founder-resigns-ad554687-f2d1-4b7c-ac0c-5aa555fb312f.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Axios</a>.
As part of a lengthy statement regarding his resignation, Schmidt talked about how he had also allegedly been molested. As The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/steve-schmidt-resigns-from-the-lincoln-project-releases-statement-claiming-he-was-molested-at-13" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reported</a>:
<blockquote>“It was just a touch — a light one — and it lasted for only a moment,” Schmidt began in a lengthy statement given to journalist Miranda Green. Schmidt went on to recount in detail how, when he was a 13-year-old Boy Scout, a camp medic named Ray allegedly molested him.
Schmidt went on to claim his experience “immolated” his Catholic faith, especially since he claimed it was disgraced Cardinal Theodore McCarrick to whom he reached out to tell his story.
“A touch on a table at age 13 that lasted seconds has been a defining event in my life,” Schmidt wrote. “It never went away. That moment bequeathed me the three companions of my life that are always close and often present: anger, shame and depression.”
Schmidt went on to use his own experience as a springboard to comment on the allegations against Weaver.</blockquote>
During an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson in August, former vice presidential candidate <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/sarah-palin-steve-schmidt-sabotage_n_5f3eac6ec5b697824f95d434" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sarah Palin blasted Schmidt</a> as “a piece of work” and accused him and Nicolle Wallace of being &#8220;yahoos&#8221; and “wolves in sheep’s clothing” who sabotaged her 2008 campaign with McCain. &#8220;But look where they are today,&#8221; she said.
“You know, those of us who were kind of victims of what they’re capable of, it’s kind of vindication for us,&#8221; Palin added. &#8220;It’s like, ‘See, told you so! They were never on our team to begin with.&#8217;”

In addition to the late Arizona senator, Roberta McCain&#8217;s other children included the late Jean Alexandra &#8220;Sandy&#8221; (McCain) Morgan, who died in 2019, as well as actor Joseph Pinckney McCain II, who remains alive and was with his mother when she died in her Washington, D.C., home, according to a statement from Cindy McCain.

The truth was simple and easy to verify: McCain’s wife Cindy visited Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1991 with the non-profit organization she founded, the American Voluntary Medical Team. While at the orphanage founded by Mother Teresa, Cindy found two infant girls who needed medical treatment. She adopted one of the girls and helped facilitate the adoption of the other to a family friend. She named her new adopted daughter Bridget. John McCain was happy to adopt a new baby girl.
Absolutely nothing untoward happened, yet the whisper campaign helped sink McCain’s 2000 run for president. He eventually buried the hatchet with President Bush and even stumped for him in 2004.
Twenty years after one of the ugliest smear campaigns in modern presidential history, Democrats are using foreign adoption against President Donald Trump’s reported Supreme Court pick, Judge Barrett, who adopted two Haitian Children.

Dana Houle, who served as Chief of Staff for Democratic New Hampshire Rep. Paul Hodes and campaign manager for Hodes and for Democratic Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes, according to <a href="http://bostonreview.net/Dana-houle">Boston Review</a>, tweeted, “I would love to know which adoption agency Amy Coney Barrett &amp; her husband used to adopt the two children they brought here from Haiti.”
“So, here’s a Q: does the press even investigate details of Barrett’s adoptions from Haiti? Some adoptions from Haiti were legit,” Houle continued. “Many were sketchy as hell. And if press learned they were unethical &amp; maybe illegal adoptions, would they report it? Or not bc it involves her children. Would it matter if her kids were scooped up by ultra-religious Americans, or Americans weren’t scrupulous intermediaries &amp; the kids were taken when there was family in Haiti? I dunno. I think it does, but maybe it doesn’t, or shouldn’t.”
He added, “I hope the adoptions were fully legit &amp; ethical. I hope if press investigates that’s whay [sic] find. But if the adoptions were sketchy, reporting it would really screw w the lives of her 2 adopted kids (&amp; maybe the 5 bio kids too).”
Another Democrat, NextGen America managing director John Lee Brougher, demanded more information “about the circumstances of how Amy Coney Barrett came to adopt her children, and the treatment of them since,” adding that “Transracial adoption is fraught with trauma and potential for harm.” Brougher has since protected his tweets.

Cindy McCain broke radio silence and publicly endorsed Joe Biden for president on Tuesday, arguing that her late husband, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), would have wanted it.
President Donald Trump, however, said she and &#8220;Sleepy Joe&#8221; can have each other.
In a tweet on Wednesday morning, the president referred to Joe Biden as &#8220;John McCain&#8217;s lapdog&#8221; that joined him in many bad decisions, such as the Iraq War.
&#8220;I hardly know Cindy McCain other than having put her on a Committee at her husband’s request,&#8221; Trump tweeted. &#8220;Joe Biden was John McCain’s lapdog. So many BAD decisions on Endless Wars &amp; the V.A., which I brought from a horror show to HIGH APPROVAL. Never a fan of John. Cindy can have Sleepy Joe!&#8221;

In her endorsement on Twitter, McCain said that her husband &#8220;lived by a code,&#8221; which put country over political party.
“My husband John lived by a code: country first. We are Republicans, yes, but Americans foremost. There’s only one candidate in this race who stands up for our values as a nation, and that is @JoeBiden,” she said.
“Joe and I don’t always agree on the issues, and I know he and John certainly had some passionate arguments, but he is a good and honest man. He will lead us with dignity,” <a href="https://twitter.com/cindymccain/status/1308552894388473856" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">she continued</a>. “He will be a commander in chief that the finest fighting force in the history of the world can depend on, because he knows what it is like to send a child off to fight.”
Biden tweeted that he was “deeply honored” to have Cindy’s endorsement, saying that the election was bigger than a political party.
“Cindy — I’m deeply honored to have your support and your friendship. This election is bigger than any one political party. It requires all of us to come together as one America to restore the soul of the nation. Together, we’ll get it done.”
Though &#8220;The View&#8221; co-host Meghan McCain has not yet endorsed a presidential candidate, she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/john-kasich-biden-will-not-be-a-radical-on-abortion-thats-not-in-his-character">has expressed concern</a> over Joe Biden&#8217;s pro-abortion views, which includes overturning the Hyde Amendment to ensure taxpayer-funded abortions. Speaking with former Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich recently, Meghan McCain wondered if Biden&#8217;s views should be of concern for Republicans who dislike Trump.
“I hate President Trump, and I think everybody else knows that, but there are some policies on the left specifically with Senator Kamala Harris right now having to do with abortion,” said Meghan McCain. “She co-sponsored a bill opposing any limits at all when you can get an abortion and it’s a big break from Joe Biden’s past positions. And the Biden-Harris campaign is also running on taxpayer funding for abortions.”
“I was surprised at this, including those after 20 weeks. You’re pro-life, and I know that. You were pro-life in politics as am I,” she continued. “It’s a big, big part of who I am and my platform, and I don’t think taxpayers should be funding abortions for women who are as pregnant as I am right now. So how would you push back against a voter like me who’s concerned about things like this in a possible Biden/Kamala administration?”
Kasich said that while he disagrees with Joe Biden on a number of issues, including the capital gains tax, he believed that the former vice president would be able to pull the country back together.
“I agree with your position on the life issue, but look, again I’m not a person —  first of all, I disagree with Joe Biden in a number of areas, like some of what he’s talking about in terms of capital gains taxes — but the issues here are dwarfed, in my opinion, by the fact that he’s a person that can pull us together,” said Kasich.  “So do I think that if he wins, all of the sudden, all of these things are gonna happen that are negative? No, I don’t believe that at all, because that’s not his character. That’s not who he is.”
