Software engineer John McAfee faked his death last summer and is living in the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/united-states">United States</a>, his ex-girlfriend claims without evidence in a new <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/netflix" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Netflix</a> documentary that is set to air tomorrow.
“I don’t know if I should say, but two weeks ago, after his death, I got a call from Texas: ‘It’s me, John. I paid off people to pretend that I am dead, but I am not dead,’” ex-girlfriend Samantha Herrera <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/08/23/john-mcafee-faked-his-death-ex-girlfriend-claims-in-netflix-doc/">claims</a> in the documentary “Running With the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee.”
McAfee was awaiting extradition to the U.S. on tax evasion charges when he was found dead in a Barcelona prison cell, The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/software-legend-murder-suspect-john-mcafees-corpse-still-in-morgue-year-after-alleged-suicide">reported</a>. The 75-year-old developer created the first commercial anti-virus software, which bore his name, but led a bizarre life fueled by drugs and conspiracies, and was widely suspected of killing a neighbor on the tropical island where they lived.
Herrera claims without evidence that McAfee told her that “there are only three persons in this world that know I’m still alive.”
Charlie Russell, who directed the documentary, was stunned by Herrera’s claim and did not know what to make of it.
“I don’t know what I think and I don’t think she does,” Russell <a href="https://www.esquire.com/uk/culture/a40953177/john-mcafee-documentary-director-interview/">said</a>. “She says it, then she looks at the camera, and I can’t work out whether she thinks it’s real or not. She’s someone who was very angry at John.&#8221;
McAfee had been jailed for eight months after being arrested in Spain following years on the run from U.S. law enforcement. His death was deemed a suicide, but McAfee’s widow, Janice McAfee, said he was not suicidal. &#8220;I thought maybe [whoever it was who shot Faull] were coming for me,” he told the magazine. “They mistook him for me. They got the wrong house. He&#8217;s dead. They killed him. It spooked me out.&#8221;
&#8220;Under no circumstances am I going to willingly talk to the police in this country. You can say I&#8217;m paranoid about it but they will kill me, there is no question.&#8221;
In 2015, Vienne Robinson, assistant superintendent of the San Pedro police department in Belize, told FoxNews.com that law enforcement was actively searching for McAfee.
“We are looking for him in connection with the murder,” Robinson told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/tech/u-s-antivirus-legend-john-mcafee-wanted-for-murder-in-belize">FoxNews.com</a>.
McAfee, who was never criminally charged in Faull’s death, fled Belize, but was later arrested in Guatemala and deported to the U.S. Faull’s family sued him for wrongful death in a Florida civil court. McAfee was ordered to pay his survivors $25 million.

John McAfee, the antivirus pioneer who died in a Spanish prison last month, blew his $100 million fortune on &#8220;bizarre&#8221; mansions and was actually broke when he died, according to a new report.
Author Mark Eglinton, who &#8220;collaborated with McAfee on a book for six months while he was on the run from authorities,&#8221; believes &#8220;McAfee was indeed penniless, citing his personal experience with the outlaw and extensive interviews with him,&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9796559/Once-worth-100M-John-McAfee-broke-died-bars-Spain-friend-says.html">reports</a> the Daily Mail.
&#8220;He had his money in very safe investments, but he built houses, absolutely bizarre properties,&#8221; the Scottish author told the British newspaper. &#8220;Some of them, he never slept a night in the property.&#8221; More from the Daily Mail:

In late June, McAfee was found dead in his cell in Brians 2 prison, located in Sant Esteve de Sesrovires near Barcelona, with the Catalan Department of Justice reporting that “everything points to a suicide.”
The news came just hours after a Spanish court agreed to extradite McAfee to the United States, where he faced financial charges including tax evasion. The indictment alleged that McAfee, 75 at the time, evaded U.S. taxes by having his income “paid into bank accounts and cryptocurrency accounts in the names of others, while also using the names of others to conceal ownership of property and assets including a yacht,” CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/05/tech/john-mcafee-tax-evasion-sec-cryptocurrency/index.html">reported</a> in October.
As in the case of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, who reportedly also committed suicide in jail, conspiracy theories quickly emerged. His wife Janice blasted the media as a “malignant cancer” responsible for spreading the “story” that her late husband died by suicide.
“The story of John’s ‘suicide’ was already prepared and presented to the public before I or his attorneys were even notified of his death. Words cannot describe how enraged I am at the fact that I had to hear the news of John’s death via a DM on Twitter,” she tweeted. “And now it’s being conveniently reported that there was a ‘suicide note’ found in his pocket, something that was not mentioned when I collected John’s belongings from the prison and another piece of information the media somehow got a hold of before myself and John’s attorneys.”
