<p>On March 30, 1981, after President Reagan gave a <a href="https://www.reaganlibrary.gov/permanent-exhibits/assassination-attempt#:~:text=On%20March%2030%2C%201981%2C%20President,when%20several%20shots%20were%20fired.">speech</a> to roughly 5,000 members of the AFL-CIO at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C., he left the hotel and walked outside as Hinckley Jr. lay in wait.</p>
<p>Hinckley Jr. had seen the movie “Taxi Driver” in 1976, starring Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster. In the film, De Niro’s character protects Foster, who plays a child prostitute; De Niro’s character also intends to assassinate a presidential candidate.</p>
<p>Hinckley Jr., obsessed with Foster, pursued her with love letters and phone calls after she attended Yale University years later; after she rejected his advances, he conjectured that he could win her love by assassinating Reagan.</p>
<p>As Reagan approached the presidential limousine, Hinckley Jr. fired six shots at him; one bullet lodged in his rib just one inch from his heart and punctured his lung.</p>
<p>Hinckley also shot White House Press Secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy, and policeman Thomas Delahanty. Brady, shot in the head, required a wheelchair for the rest of his life; after he died in 2014, a medical examiner <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2014/08/08/338949267/james-brady-s-death-is-ruled-a-homicide">ruled his death a homicide</a> from Hinckley’s gunshot.</p>

<p>John Hinckley Jr., the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/john-hinckley-jr">man who attempted to assassinate</a> President Ronald Reagan more than four decades ago, said Tuesday in his first televised interview that he has &#8220;remorse&#8221; for what he did and is glad his attempt to kill Reagan &#8220;did not succeed.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hinckley attempted to assassinate Reagan on March 30, 1981, and later claimed he did so to gain the attention of actress Jodie Foster, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/not-worth-a-gamble-nyc-music-venue-cancels-performance-by-john-hinckley-jr-the-man-who-tried-to-assassinate-reagan">The Daily Wire</a> reported. A bullet ricocheted off the presidential limousine and struck Reagan about an inch from his heart. Press Secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy, and policeman Thomas Delahanty were injured in the shooting, too; Brady lived partially paralyzed from the attack, until he later died.</p>
<p>&#8220;I feel terrible for what I did, and I&#8217;ve had remorse for many years for what I did, and if I could take it all back, I would,&#8221; Hinckley told CBS Mornings. &#8220;I swear, I would take it all back.&#8221;</p>
<p>Reagan was &#8220;a nice man and a good president,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p>Hinckley said he would like forgiveness from the Reagan family and the families of the others he injured, though he doesn&#8217;t expect to receive it. &#8220;They probably can&#8217;t, but I wish they would,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have true remorse for what I did. I know they probably can&#8217;t forgive me now, but I just want them to know that I am sorry for what I did,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;I&#8217;m glad I did not succeed.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I did not have a good heart. I was doing things that a good person does not do,&#8221; Hinckley said.</p>
<p>CBS News&#8217; chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett said Hinckley told him he takes two psychotropic pills per day, after CBS host Gayle King noted the near-assassin &#8220;seemed heavily medicated&#8221; during the interview.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been the most scrutinized person in the entire mental health system for 41 years,&#8221; Hinckley told Garrett.</p>
<p>The 67-year-old allegedly tried to kill himself on two occasions while in psychiatric care. &#8220;One was a hanging, and one was an overdose of pills,&#8221; Hinckley said.</p>
<p>His release is &#8220;justice,&#8221; Hinckley claimed. &#8220;I was not just a cold, calculating criminal in 1981,&#8221; but mentally ill.</p>
<p>&#8220;Psychologically, that person is dead,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I&#8217;m a completely different person in mind and spirit.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hinckley&#8217;s conditioned release started in 2016, and restrictions have since been removed. The Daily Wire noted on June 15, 2022, when Hinckley began his unconditional release, he posted on Twitter, “After 41 years 2 months and 15 days, FREEDOM AT LAST!!!”</p>

John Hinckley Jr. Says Reagan Was ‘A Good President,’ Is Glad Assassination Attempt ‘Did Not Succeed’

<p>March 30, 1981, should have been just another day for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ronald-reagan">President Ronald Reagan</a>. Just 69 days after his inauguration, the president was giving a <a href="https://www.reaganlibrary.gov/permanent-exhibits/assassination-attempt#:~:text=On%20March%2030%2C%201981%2C%20President,when%20several%20shots%20were%20fired.">speech</a> to about 5,000 members of the AFL-CIO at the Washington Hilton Hotel in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/washington">Washington, D.C.</a></p>
<p>At around 2:30 p.m., Reagan left the hotel, waving to supporters as security walked him to his limousine. Waiting in the crowd, however, was John Hinckley Jr., a mentally ill young man with a .22 revolver and an intent to murder.</p>
<p>Hinckley, who was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma, in 1955, suffered from emotional problems and was prescribed anti-depressants and tranquilizers. In 1976, Hinckley saw the movie “Taxi Driver,” starring Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle, a mentally disturbed taxi driver who becomes obsessed with Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), who volunteers on the presidential campaign of Charles Palantine (Leonard Harris). Bickle repulses Betsy when he takes her to a porn theater on a date, and his attempts to apologize are rejected. Distraught by her rejection, Bickle has violent fantasies and begins buying guns. He also starts attending Palantine’s rallies to learn about his security, with the intent of assassinating the candidate. When Bickle finally makes his move, he&#8217;s stopped by Secret Service agents as he draws his gun. While all this is going on, Bickle is also attempting to save a child prostitute, played by Jodie Foster.</p>
<p>Hinckley became obsessed with Foster after watching the movie, and even moved to New Haven, Connecticut, to stalk her when she began attending Yale University. He took a Yale writing course and left love letters and poems in her mailbox. He also repeatedly called her and managed to speak with her twice, reportedly telling her he wasn’t a “dangerous person,” according to Hinckley’s <a href="http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/hinckley/HBIO.HTM">biography</a> at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. Foster steered clear of the stalker who would one day make history.</p>
<p>In addition to Foster, Hinckley was also obsessed with the idea of assassination. After being rejected by Foster, he began thinking that if he could become a household name by assassinating the president of the United States, he may prove that he was worthy of her “respect and love.”</p>
<p>Reagan was not Hinckley’s first potential target. In 1980, Jimmy Carter was still president, so Hinckley began stalking him on the campaign trail. Hinckley was arrested by airport security in Nashville after they found handguns in his suitcases. The guns were confiscated, and he was fined $62.50.</p>
<p>Hinckley was not deterred. He purchased two new guns but began seeing a psychiatrist in the fall of 1980 after his parents insisted. Hinckley’s parents owned an oil company and were quite wealthy, and his new psychiatrist believed that the best way to help their son overcome what was believed to be emotional immaturity was to cut him off financially.</p>
<p>Hinckley was unable to find work and eventually made his way to Washington, D.C. on March 29, 1981. The next day, he wrote Foster <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20110108054234/http:/www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/hinckley/jfostercommun.HTM">a letter</a> detailing his plan to assassinate Reagan, who was inaugurated at the end of January that year.</p>
<p>“I will admit to you that the reason I&#8217;m going ahead with this attempt now is because I just cannot wait any longer to impress you,” Hinckley wrote. “I&#8217;ve got to do something now to make you understand, in no uncertain terms, that I am doing all of this for your sake!”</p>
<p>On March 30, Hinckley stepped out from a crowd of reporters outside the Hilton Hotel and fired six shots at Reagan and his security team. One bullet ricocheted off of Reagan&#8217;s limousine and struck the president under his left arm, <a href="https://www.reaganlibrary.gov/permanent-exhibits/assassination-attempt">according</a> to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. It was initially thought that Hinckley missed Reagan, until the president began coughing up blood and was taken to the hospital. It was later discovered that the bullet grazed one of the president’s ribs and became lodged in his rib just one inch from his heart. The injury left Reagan with a punctured lung and internal bleeding, resulting in a 12-day hospital stay.</p>
<p>Also injured in the attack were Press Secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy, and policeman Thomas Delahanty. Brady was hit in the head and became permanently disabled, requiring a wheelchair for the rest of his life and affecting his speech. He died on August 4, 2014, with a medical examiner <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2014/08/08/338949267/james-brady-s-death-is-ruled-a-homicide">ruling his death a homicide</a> resulting from Hinckley’s gunshot 33 years earlier.</p>
<p>Delahanty was struck in the back of his neck trying to protect Reagan, while McCarthy was struck in the abdomen. Both men survived and fully recovered.</p>
<p>Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and confined to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. One of his attorneys, Greg Craig, went on to become assistant to the President and White House special counsel under Bill Clinton and White House counsel under President Barack Obama. In 2019, he was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-heres-really-big-obama-admin-scandal-media-james-barrett">indicted</a> for lying to federal prosecutors about his work at a private law firm for the former president of Ukraine without registering as a foreign agent.</p>
<p>By 2011, Hinckley was allowed to leave the hospital for several days at a time to visit family in Virginia. In 2012, therapists in Virginia withdrew a plan that would allow Hinckley to leave the hospital and live full-time with his mother. At the time, the Department of Justice said Hinckley hadn’t changed and should remain in the hospital. Four years later, in 2016, Hinckley was released from St. Elizabeth’s to live with his mother and gain more privileges.</p>

<p>John Hinckley Jr., the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/john-hinckley-jr">man who attempted to assassinate</a> President Ronald Reagan decades ago, began his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/time-to-rock-and-roll-would-be-reagan-assassin-john-hinckley-freed-announces-music-debut">unconditional release</a> on Wednesday, and immediately tried to enter the music industry.</p>
<p>Earlier this month, Hinckley <a href="https://twitter.com/JohnHinckley20/status/1533107600966950913?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">posted</a> an email address on Twitter for anyone who wants to “book a show or other offers” with him. While still serving his sentence for attempting to assassinate the president, Hinckley began posting original and cover songs to his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCck3J5KR3INUP1K-hrBe8iA/videos">YouTube channel</a>, which now has nearly 30,000 subscribers. Before he even began his unconditional release, he had booked a show at Market Hotel in Brooklyn, New York.</p>
<p>On Wednesday, however, the venue <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce1OeRErG1x/">announced</a> that it had canceled Hinckley’s performance, citing alleged “threats and hate.”</p>
<p>“We do believe that ex-cons and people with mental illness can recover, and that we <em>should</em> want them to maintain hope that they can better themselves and earn a chance to fully rejoin society,” the venue wrote in a lengthy Instagram post. “[B]ut we are living in dangerous times, and after being presented with and reflecting on some very real and worsening threats and hate facing our vulnerable communities – our family here in nightlife – and after seeing the nature of who this booking has antagonized, and who and what else those same folks are upset about: we don’t see the need to allow someone who did something awful to skip the line and play even our middle size independent community stage.”</p>
<p>The venue also acknowledged that Hinckley wouldn&#8217;t have sold tickets without his association with the assassination attempt.</p>
<p>“If we were going to host an event for the principle, and potentially put others at risk in doing so, it shouldn’t be for some stunt booking — no offense to the artist,” the venue added. “We might feel differently if we believed the music was important and transcended the infamy, but that’s just not the case here (though any artist can get there — even someone who committed awful crimes and suffered mental illness).”</p>
<p>“It is not worth a gamble on the safety of our vulnerable communities to give a guy a microphone and a paycheck from his art who hasn’t had to earn it, who we don’t care about on an artistic level, and who upsets people in a dangerously radicalized, reactionary climate,” the venue concluded.</p>

<p>U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman announced in September that he was prepared to release Hinckley on June 15 if he “continued to do well,” according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/john-hinckley-shootings-ronald-reagan-government-and-politics-010f86fce04b213a526e209eccfe6c47">Associated Press</a>. A hearing two weeks ago <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/john-hinckley-jr-who-tried-to-assassinate-ronald-reagan-granted-full-release">confirmed</a> those plans.</p>

<p>Hinckley attacked Reagan on March 30, 1981, with a revolver in an attempt to gain the attention of actress Jodie Foster. The commander-in-chief was “wounded when one of the bullets ricocheted off of the limousine, striking him under the left armpit” and sending him to the hospital for 12 days, according to the <a href="https://www.reaganlibrary.gov/permanent-exhibits/assassination-attempt">Ronald Reagan Presidential Library</a>.</p>
<p>Press Secretary James Brady, Secret Service Agent Timothy McCarthy, and policeman Thomas Delahanty were also wounded during the shooting. Brady — for whom the White House briefing room is named — was partially paralyzed for the rest of his life due to the attack.</p>
<p>Hinckley was found guilty by reason of insanity and initially sent to a mental hospital. “But starting in 2003 Friedman began allowing Hinckley to live for longer stretches in the community with requirements like attending therapy and restrictions on where he can travel,” the AP reported.</p>

<p>In the days preceding his release, Hinckley appeared to be preparing for an entrance into the music world. Over the past two weeks, he has invited social media followers to “book a show or other offers” by contacting him via email.</p>

<p>However, Market Hotel — the venue that was slated to host the sold-out concert — announced on Wednesday that it would cancel the show.</p>
<p>“If we were going to host an event for the principle, and potentially put others at risk in doing so, it shouldn’t be for some stunt booking — no offense to the artist,” the venue wrote in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce1OeRErG1x/?hl=en">a statement</a>. “We might feel differently if we believed the music was important and transcended the infamy, but that’s just not the case here (though any artist can get there — even someone who committed awful crimes and suffered mental illness).”</p>
<p>Barry Levine, Hinckley’s lawyer, told Rolling Stone that Hinckley “has put his music on YouTube in order to put his music in the public sphere.”</p>
<p>“He is grateful for the nice comments he has received,” Levine said. “He is working on an album and will be looking for a label.”</p>

<p>U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman <a href="https://twitter.com/JakeBGibson/status/1532013715893235713">called</a> the process “a long road,” according to Fox News producer Jake Gibson, who added that the order takes effect on June 15.</p>

Defense attorney Barry Levine, who has represented Hinckley for decades, said he felt some gratification because although the &#8216;wounds he inflicted could not be healed,&#8217; the process had &#8216;salvaged&#8217; Hinckley’s life,&#8221; Gibson added.</span></p>

<p>In 2016, Hinckley was granted permission to live full-time with his mother. “Still, he was required to attend individual and group therapy sessions, was barred from talking to the media and could only travel within a limited area,” the AP said. “Secret Service would also periodically follow him.”</p>
<p>Nevertheless, Hinckley has lived under various restrictions. In addition to letting officials access his devices and accounts, he is barred from traveling to places where he knows the Secret Service is protecting someone, and he must give three days&#8217; notice before he travels more than 75 miles away from his Virginia home.</p>
<p>Friedman said that Hinckley, who is 67 years old, “has displayed no symptoms of active mental illness, no violent behavior and no interest in weapons since 1983,” the AP added.</p>

<p>Levine, Hinckley’s attorney, told Rolling Stone that Hinckley “has put his music on YouTube in order to put his music in the public sphere.”</p>

<p>John Hinckley Jr., the man who attempted to assassinate former President Ronald Reagan in 1981, won unconditional release from his state-mandated supervision on Monday.</p>
<p>The Department of Justice (DOJ) agreed to a deal with Hinckley’s attorney and a federal judge accepted it, allowing the 66-year-old to begin living life without court-ordered restrictions and mandated supervision of his doctors.</p>
<p>“There is no evidence of danger whatsoever,” Hinckley’s attorney, Barry Levine said, according to <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/09/27/1040872498/john-hinckley-unconditional-release">NPR</a>. Levine called the judge&#8217;s decision a “momentous event” and said his client had an “excellent” prognosis.</p>
<p>Assistant U.S. Attorney Kacie Weston agreed to the deal with one provision. Hinckley should be monitored for nine more months because he had not lived on his own in four decades and because one of his primary doctors is retiring.</p>
<p>“At this point the ball is in Mr. Hinckley’s hands. The government agrees if he continues to do what he is doing between now and June 2022, he would be granted his unconditional release,” Weston said, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/legal-issues/john-hinckley-unconditional-release/2021/09/27/8e5f5286-1f9f-11ec-9309-b743b79abc59_story.html.">The Washington Post</a>.</p>
<p>Court filings show that the DOJ had opposed granting Hinckley unconditional release just months ago, according to <a href="https://www.ajc.com/news/nation-world/is-john-hinckley-who-shot-ronald-reagan-no-longer-a-threat/6JUUYZTTTJCBXNMG6YQUNXG754/">The Atlanta Journal-Constitution</a>. In May, the government retained a mental health expert to review Hinckley and determine if he still posed a danger to society or himself. The review’s findings have not been filed in court.</p>
<p>“Since Hinckley, 66, moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, from a Washington hospital in 2016, the court-imposed conditions included doctors and therapists overseeing his psychiatric medication and deciding how often he attends individual and group therapy sessions. Hinckley also can’t have a gun. And he can’t contact Reagan’s children, other victims or their families, or actress Jodie Foster, whom he was obsessed with at the time of the 1981 shooting,” the Journal-Constitution reported.</p>
<p>Hinckley attempted to assassinate Reagan in 1981 outside of a hotel in Washington, D.C. Hinckley, who was 25 at the time, was arrested and put on trial for attempting to assassinate the president. In 1982, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.</p>
<p>“Outrage over Hinckley’s acquittal in the March 30, 1981 shooting reshaped the insanity defense in courts across the country. The revelation that he had pulled the trigger to impress movie star Jodie Foster added obsession and celebrity to the case. And extraordinary television footage of the attack on the 40th U.S. president brought the event to millions of American homes,” the Post reported.</p>
<p>Reagan eventually recovered from the shooting. Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy and Washington police Officer Thomas Delahanty were also injured in the attack and Reagan press secretary James Brady, who died in 2014, was left paralyzed.</p>
<p>Hinckley stayed at St. Elizabeth’s for about three decades until 2016 when the court-mandated restrictions on him began to ease and he was allowed to live at his mother’s home in Williamsburg, Virginia. His mother, Jo Ann Hinckley, died at the age of 95 on July 30.</p>


BREAKING: Attempted Reagan Assassin John Hinckley Jr. Granted Unconditional Release Under DOJ Deal

<p>On Thursday, the attorney representing John W. Hinckley Jr. said his client will <a href="v">leave St. Elizabeths Hospital</a>, a Washington psychiatric hospital, to live full-time with his mother in Virginia on Sept. 10. Hinckley Jr. wounded President Ronald Reagan in an assassination attempt in 1981 and left press secretary James Brady so severely wounded that his death in 2014 was retroactively <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/james-bradys-death-ruled-homicide-by-dc-medical-examiner/2014/08/08/686de224-1f41-11e4-82f9-2cd6fa8da5c4_story.html">ruled a homicide</a>.</p>
<p>Hinckley’s attorney, Barry Levine, said, that his client’s release was &#8220;a milestone&#8221; because Hinckley and his family efforts succeeded to &#8220;responsibly deal with disease.&#8221; He added, &#8220;People of goodwill should celebrate his achievement and success … I think he will be a citizen about whom we can all be proud.&#8221;</p>
<p>Judge Paul L. Friedman ruled in July that Hinckley Jr., 61, was not a danger to himself or to others and could move to his other’s home on August 5.</p>
<p>Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity after the assassination attempt, which he stated was executed to impress actress Jodie Foster. Friedman has allowed Hinckley to spend time at his other’s home before; in the past two years or so he has spent 17 days a month at his mother’s home.</p>
<p>Friedman ruled Hinckley will have to live with his other for a year, after that he can live on his own, but must find at least part-time employment or volunteer work as well as join individual and group therapy.</p>
<p>Reagan&#8217;s daughter Patti Davis, as well as Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy and District of Columbia police officer Thomas Delahanty,the two officers injured in the shooting, said they didn’t approve of the judge’s decision but were resigned to it.</p>
<p>In 2014, when Brady’s death was ruled a homicide, Levine expressed confidence that Hinckley would not be prosecuted again, this time for Brady’s murder. He said, “The prosecution will face insurmountable legal barriers to any prosecution. It ought to be self-evident. Is there any conceivable theory of facts that would differ from the facts that applied to the prosecution in 1982? Is there something new or different other than the fact that Brady died? [Hinckley] was found not guilty of the assault. How could he be found guilty of the more serious charge?”</p>
<p>After the shooting attempt, Brady and his wife Sarah, became leading advocates of gun control. Brady underwent two surgeries to stop spinal fluid from leaking from his cranial cavity, was operated on for a pulmonary embolism, and suffered epileptic seizures, pneumonia and persistent fevers.</p>
