Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) won his race in November, began his term in the Senate, then checked himself into a hospital six weeks later to get treatment for depression. The 53-year-old had suffered a serious stroke over the summer, and his mental capacity and hearing were badly affected.
He was gone for a month and a half. So how&#8217;s he doing? Judging from this video clip from last week, not so good.

But the Associated Press, long a nonpartisan news agency that has gone hard to the Left in recent years, reports that Fetterman&#8217;s doing great.
&#8220;People close to Fetterman say his relaxed, comfortable style is a sign that the senator is making a robust recovery after six weeks of inpatient treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where his clinical depression was treated with medication and he was fitted for hearing aids for hearing loss that had made it harder for him to communicate,&#8221; the AP <a href="https://apnews.com/article/fetterman-depression-senate-return-hoodies-shorts-771886ba8f3caee9be9674d186cd656b" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
The wire service reported that conclusion based on the fact that the 6-foot-8 Fetterman wears hoodies and shorts in the Senate, even though male senators are expected to wear a jacket and tie on the Senate floor.
But for Fetterman, the rules don&#8217;t apply. He often casts his votes from the doorway of the Democratic cloakroom or the side entrance. And when he&#8217;s not on the Senate floor, he wears his hoodies and shorts, including during a press conference with four Democratic colleagues in suits last week.
The dress code in Congress isn&#8217;t formally in any rule <a href="https://www.senate.gov/reference/reference_index_subjects/Rules_and_Procedure_vrd.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">book</a>. But back in 2017, then Speaker of the House Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) issued a friendly reminder that members “should wear appropriate business attire during all sittings of the House, however brief their appearance on the floor may be,&#8221; Glamour <a href="https://www.glamour.com/story/house-of-representatives-no-sleeveless-dress-code" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Democrats, of course, are fine with Fetterman flouting the dress code.
“He’s setting a new dress code,” Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) joked to the AP. “He was struggling. And now he’s a joyful person to be around.”
Others, though, say the rules are the rules.
“John Fetterman’s attire in the Senate perfectly summarizes Democrats lack of respect for Americans and our institutions,” conservative comedian Tim Young wrote on Twitter.

But Fetterman&#8217;s speech is worse. And Fox News Digital <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/fetterman-wearing-hoodies-gym-shorts-senate-shows-robust-recovery-ap-report-claims" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found</a> that Fetterman’s staff sometimes clean up his quotes from the Senate floor to make him sound less incoherent.

&#8220;The Republicans want to give a work requirement for SNAP,&#8221; Fetterman said in a hearing this month. &#8220;You know, for a uh, uh, uh, a hungry family has to have these, this kind of penalties, or these some kinds of word — working uh, require — Shouldn’t you have a working requirement, after we sail your bank, billions of your bank? Because you seem we were preoccupied, uh when, then SNAP requirements for works, for hungry people, but not about protecting the tax, the tax papers, you know, that will bail them out of whatever does about a bank to crash it.&#8221;
But the quote, which a Washington Post reporter said was provided to him by Fetterman&#8217;s office, was very different, Fox reported. &#8220;Shouldn&#8217;t you have a working requirement after we bail out your bank? Republicans seem to be more preoccupied with SNAP requirements for hungry people than protecting taxpayers that have to bail out these banks.&#8221;

Let&#8217;s get one thing straight from the get-go: this isn&#8217;t a partisan thing.
The fact that the two senators are Democrats has nothing to do with the call for voters to bounce them from office. For the record, I think voters in New York&#8217;s 3rd congressional district should recall Republican Rep. George Santos, too.
But really, Sens. Dianne Feinstein and John Fetterman are not mentally fit to serve in the Senate. How much more proof do we need?!
Feinstein, 89, was out for months after being hospitalized for shingles. She has missed more than 70% of the votes in the 118th Senate. When she finally returned, she was in a wheelchair.
But what happened Tuesday clearly shows that Feinstein can no longer execute her duties of office.
Feinstein, who has been in politics for 53 years, was asked by reporters about her lengthy absence and how her colleagues reacted upon her return.
&#8220;No, I haven&#8217;t been gone,&#8221; she said, Slate <a href="https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2023/05/dianne-feinstein-health-return-to-senate.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. &#8220;You should follow the — I haven&#8217;t been gone, I&#8217;ve been working.&#8221;
One reporter asked whether she had been working from home.
&#8220;No, I&#8217;ve been here. I&#8217;ve been voting,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Please, you either know or don&#8217;t know.&#8221;
Oh, we know, DiFi. You have not &#8220;been here.&#8221; In fact, you haven&#8217;t &#8220;been here&#8221; mentally for quite some time.
And let&#8217;s slow down a second. The California Democrat has been elected over and over, so she must be pleasing her constituents. And she&#8217;s devoted her life to public service, so, bravo.
But over the last couple of years, there have been more and more stories about how Feinstein is often confused. One member of Congress who met with Feinstein last year said the once feisty senator had clearly lost a step — or seven.
“I have worked with her for a long time and long enough to know what she was like just a few years ago: always in command, always in charge, on top of the details, basically couldn’t resist a conversation where she was driving some bill or some idea. All of that is gone,” the lawmaker <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/dianne-feinstein-senate-17079487.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the San Francisco Chronicle.
Fetterman is even worse. He suffered a stroke during his Senate campaign but voters elected him anyway. He has serious cognitive and hearing issues. And just weeks into his term, he disappeared for five weeks to deal with depression.
But what he did Tuesday clearly shows he is incapable of handling a U.S. senator&#8217;s heady duties.
During a Q&amp;A session at the Senate Banking Committee hearing, Fetterman was the last senator to question officials about the Silicon Valley Bank collapse earlier this year.
&#8220;So, I went up on the Internet, and it’s like, it did happen. It did happen. It did happen,&#8221; Fetterman said, holding up a clipping of a New York Post headline titled &#8220;Ex-Silicon Valley Bank CEO Greg Becker jets to Hawaii after collapse.&#8221;
&#8220;And it’s in Fortune, the second-biggest bank in U.S. history collapsed and chose to go to Hawaii on that,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;You know, I’ve never been to Hawaii and neither has my family. I guess I’ve never cranked, excuse me, crashed a bank.&#8221;
Fetterman asked the officials if it was &#8220;a running joke&#8221; in the banking community that the federal government would bail them out. Former Silicon Valley Bank CEO Gregory Becker said he does not &#8220;believe that’s the case.&#8221;
&#8220;Really? Because every bank you seemingly that crashed, it’s like, ‘We can bail him out. This one crashed, we’ll bail them out,’&#8221; Fetterman said. &#8220;So far, everything’s been true. So, doesn’t it feel that now if a bank really believed that they wouldn’t be bailed out, now after bailing them out, these couple of bailouts, they are going to.&#8221;
&#8220;Do you believe that that is not outrageous that, no matter how deplorable your performance is, you are made as whole and all by … taxpapers [sic],&#8221; the Pennsylvania senator said. &#8220;So what do yous [sic] believe?&#8221;

Then there was this word salad.
&#8220;It’s astonishing. That’s like if you have, I mean like, and they also realize is that now they have … a guaranteed way to be saved by, again, by no matter, by how?&#8221; Fetterman said. &#8220;Isn’t it appropriate that this kind of control should be more stricter to prevent this kind of thing from going, or should we go on start bailing and sailing whoever bank regardless of how … their conduct is?&#8221;
Look, it&#8217;s sad what happened to Fetterman, who is just 53. And we all hope for a full recovery. But he&#8217;s simply not able to perform his duties. Nor is Feinstein.
It&#8217;s time for California and Pennsylvania voters to recall them for the good of the nation.

He then appeared to go off the track, saying that he would give the former CEO of Silicon Valley Bank an &#8220;example&#8221; — and going on to talk about the fact that Republicans want to attach work requirements to SNAP benefits.

After suggesting that it was wrong to call for work requirements for hungry families, Fetterman pivoted and asked, &#8220;Shouldn&#8217;t you have a working requirement after we sail your bank — billions of your bank?&#8221;
In order to assist the Pennsylvania senator as he continues to recover from the stroke, he has been given a tablet so that he can use closed captioning to read the responses to his questions during committee hearings. When the full Senate is in session, according to a <a href="https://time.com/6251752/john-fetterman-stroke-recovery-assistive-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> from TIME Magazine, &#8220;the Sergeant at Arms (SAA) has installed a permanent live caption display monitor at Fetterman’s desk in the Senate chamber.&#8221;
Instead of using Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Senate will use professional broadcast captioners to provide Fetterman&#8217;s captions — a move designed to ensure greater accuracy.

Senator <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/john-fetterman" target="_blank" rel="noopener">John Fetterman</a> (D-PA) blamed his recent hospitalization on the &#8220;brutality&#8221; of his 2022 Senate campaign.
In an interview with Pittsburgh CBS affiliate <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/sen-john-fetterman-exclusive-interview-politics-pennsylvania/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KDKA</a>, Fetterman said he is doing better, after he checked himself into Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., in February. Fetterman was diagnosed with depression and spent six weeks in treatment at Walter Reed. In the interview, the freshman senator blamed his depression on his May 2022 stroke, but also on Republicans during the campaign.
&#8220;It was after the brutality of the campaign, the other side,&#8221; Fetterman said. &#8220;Some people believe it was one of the most vicious political campaigns.&#8221; However, Fetterman did not put any of the blame on his opponent, celebrity heart surgeon and television presenter Dr. Mehmet Oz.
Fetterman&#8217;s health was a major concern of the campaign. He suffered a massive stroke in May that sidelined him from campaigning for months. The stroke was thrust into the spotlight in particular after an NBC News report in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-senate-candidate-fetterman-forced-to-use-giant-screen-for-interview-this-guys-in-bad-shape" target="_blank" rel="noopener">October</a> revealed that Fetterman needed a giant computer screen with closed captions in order to understand what the reporter was saying. Fetterman also reportedly struggled to find the right words in the interview. The impact was also apparent during Fetterman&#8217;s lone <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fetterman-faces-fallout-from-disastrous-debate-worst-performance-by-any-candidate-i-have-ever-seen" target="_blank" rel="noopener">debate</a> with Dr. Oz; Fetterman struggled to find words and gave several incoherent and incomplete answers to questions.
Fetterman said that his mental health was preventing him from being an effective Senator, husband, and father. &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t being the kind of senator Pennsylvania deserved,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t being the kind of husband Gisele deserved, I wasn&#8217;t being the kind of father my children deserved.&#8221;
But Fetterman said this week that he is in better shape. &#8220;I feel fantastic, honestly,&#8221; he said. &#8220;A lot of people have been asking, &#8216;Hey, how are you feeling, how&#8217;s your depression?&#8217; It&#8217;s in remission, and I am just so grateful to [be] just feeling great.&#8221;
KDKA&#8217;s Jon Delano then presented the burning question directly. &#8220;Is John Fetterman really fit, mentally and physically, to be a United States senator?&#8221; he asked.
&#8220;That certainly is very blunt, but my answer will be blunt, too,&#8221; Fetterman replied. &#8220;Hell yes, and that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m doing it. Just the way any Pennsylvanians are working, you take it a day and a day and work hard, and that&#8217;s exactly what I am doing here.&#8221;

Fetterman was released from Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sen-john-fetterman-released-from-hospital" target="_blank" rel="noopener">March 31</a>. After being discharged, he returned home to Pennsylvania to continue his recovery, and returned to work on April 17, when the Senate returned from recess.
According to a <a href="https://twitter.com/frankthorp/status/1641919383147536384?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> from Dr. David Williamson, chief of neuropsychiatry and medical director of Walter Reed, Fetterman was admitted on February 15 with severe symptoms of depression, including low energy and motivation, minimal speech, poor sleep, slowed thinking, slowed movement, and feelings of guilt and worthlessness. Fortunately, Fetterman did not show signs of suicidal ideation. But his symptoms had progressively worsened over a period of eight weeks; Fetterman stopped eating and drinking, causing low blood pressure and possibly hurting blood flow to his brain.
Fetterman’s low blood pressure was attributed to poor hydration and weight loss. The Cardiology team adjusted his medications while his depression was handled with medication therapy. Fetterman’s mood steadily improved over the following weeks, the statement continued. He slept better, ate well, and hydrated, and he seemed happier and more motivated, and his attitude and engagement with others also improved. The report concluded that his depression went into remission because of the treatment. Fetterman committed to long-term treatment for depression, the report said.

Pennsylvanians have always had my back, and I will always have theirs.&#8221;
&#8220;I am extremely grateful to the incredible team at Walter Reed,&#8221; Fetterman added. &#8220;The care they provided changed my life. I will have more to say about this soon, but for now I want everyone to know that depression is treatable, and treatment works. This isn’t about politics — right now there are people who are suffering with depression in red counties and blue counties. If you need help, please get help.&#8221;

The doctors also evaluated his auditory processing abilities, which were hampered by the stroke he suffered in May. Fetterman was fitted for hearing aids, and worked with speech therapists. Fetterman&#8217;s depression may have been a barrier to engaging with his doctors, the report stated, but improvement in his condition may have improved his speech abilities. Williamson said that his speech would continue to improve with continued outpatient rehab.

Tennessee Capitol Stormed
A group of around 400 people rushed into the Tennessee state capitol building in Nashville this morning to protest for stricter gun laws following a mass shooting at the Covenant School earlier this week. A <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/wall-street-journal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wall Street Journal</a> reporter has been arrested in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/russia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Russia</a> after being accused of spying by Russia’s security agency. According to Russia’s Federal Security Service, Evan Gershkovich had “collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex” after “acting on the instructions of the American side.” An espionage case has been opened against Gershkovich. The Journal denied any accusations of spying. An arrest of this nature has not happened since the fall of the Soviet Union. 
Nine Killed In Training Accident
Two <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-army" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Army</a> HH-60 Black Hawk helicopters crashed Wednesday night in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kentucky" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kentucky</a> during a training exercise, resulting in the deaths of NINE service members.  
Few details have been released about the crash, which occurred at around 10:00 p.m. local time between two helicopters that are part of the 101st Airborne Division. The crash took place in Trigg County, near Fort Campbell. Early Thursday morning, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced that he would be traveling to Fort Campbell to “support our troops and their families after last night’s tragic incident.” 
“We know a lot about loss in Kentucky, especially these last three years. We&#8217;re gonna do what we always do,&#8221; Beshear said. &#8220;We&#8217;re gonna wrap our arms around these families, and we&#8217;re gonna be there with them, not just for the days, but the weeks and the months and the years to come. We&#8217;re gonna let them know that they are loved, they are special. And if they&#8217;ll allow us to carry some of their grief, we&#8217;ll do that for as long as we can. ”

Fetterman <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/senator-fetterman-to-be-hospitalized-for-weeks-after-checking-himself-into-hospital/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">checked himself in</a> for treatment weeks earlier, stating that he had been diagnosed with anxiety and clinical depression — conditions that he had dealt with in the past but had only amplified after a near-fatal stroke, a senate campaign, and his first days in office.
CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/29/politics/fetterman-return-senate/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that a source close to the senator had indicated he&#8217;d likely be &#8220;as good or better than his best days post-stroke,&#8221; adding, &#8220;He’s doing extremely well.&#8221;
Fellow Senator Bob Casey, also a Democrat from Pennsylvania, told <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/3924575-fetterman-set-to-return-to-senate-week-of-april-17/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hill</a> that he had visited Fetterman in recent days — and while he made it clear that he was not qualified to give a medical report on his colleague, he did say that he was pleased to see how well Fetterman appeared to be doing.
&#8220;It was just remarkable how good he looked, how good he sounded. My sense is he’ll be in better shape than he was even before his stroke. He’s really, really in good shape,&#8221; Casey said.
Senator Time Kaine (D-VA) said that in addition to Fetterman, he also expected to see Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) return around the same time frame.
&#8220;That’s what we’re hearing,&#8221; Kaine said. Feinstein has been missing from the deliberative body since February, when she announced that she had been diagnosed with shingles.
Also missing from the Senate in recent weeks has been Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who suffered a fall recently and sustained a rib fracture and a concussion.

Questions are beginning to mount about what is going on with Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) after he reportedly co-sponsored legislation this week despite being hospitalized in a mental health facility.

New York University medical professor Dr. Marc Siegel <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/mystery-swirls-fetterman-co-sponsors-legislation-hospitalized-depression-unusual" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox News that it was &#8220;very unusual&#8221; that Fetterman would be working while hospitalized in an in-patient facility.
&#8220;If you broke your ankle, you know, nobody would think twice,&#8221; Siegel said. &#8220;Okay, he&#8217;s got surgery on his ankle and he&#8217;s recovering, but he&#8217;s performing from the bed. But mental illness, by definition, is an impairment of mood and judgment. So it would be highly, highly unlikely that somebody could do that unless they&#8217;re just keeping them there to kind of keep them out of the way of the stress of daily living, but they feel that he&#8217;s up to the job.&#8221;
&#8220;Again, highly unusual,&#8221; Siegel noted, adding that he &#8220;would be very disturbed and concerned about the idea of him performing the job of senator while receiving intensive treatment for severe depression.&#8221;

Questions Grow About Senator John Fetterman After Latest Alleged Actions While Hospitalized

Republican and Democratic lawmakers unveiled a bill on Wednesday that would increase safety restrictions on <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/ohio-train-disaster" target="_blank" rel="noopener">trains</a> carrying hazardous materials.
The legislation comes weeks after a Norfolk Southern train derailed near East Palestine, Ohio. Authorities evacuated all residents within one mile of the February 3 incident and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/evacuation-ordered-ohio-governor-warns-major-explosion-could-send-shrapnel-a-mile-from-derailed-train" target="_blank" rel="noopener">started</a> a controlled burn of chemicals on the vehicle to lower the risk of an explosion, producing massive plumes of black smoke visible throughout eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced the Railway Safety Act of 2023, which would require rail companies to report hazardous materials present trains to state authorities, raise inspection requirements, and increase the rigor of defect detection efforts. Other sponsors include Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), and Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA).
“Through this legislation, Congress has a real opportunity to ensure that what happened in East Palestine will never happen again. We owe every American the peace of mind that their community is protected from a catastrophe of this kind,” Vance said in a <a href="https://www.vance.senate.gov/press-releases/senators-vance-brown-to-introduce-bipartisan-legislation-to-prevent-train-derailment-disasters/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a>. “Action to prevent future disasters is critical, but we must never lose sight of the needs of the Ohioans living in East Palestine and surrounding communities. One day, the TV cameras will leave, and the news cycle will move on, but the needs of those Ohioans will remain.”
The <a href="https://www.vance.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Railway-Safety-Act.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">legislation</a> would also increase several civil penalties for violations of rail safety regulations tenfold and require that each train must operate with at least two-person crews. With respect to safety in transporting hazardous materials, each carrier must produce a gas discharge plan and submit to periodic inspections with minimum time requirements. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg would be directed by the legislation to enumerate more specific rules. The Biden administration has <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2023/03/01/politics/congress-response-railway-safety-norfolk-southern/index.html">called on</a> Congress to enact similar reforms.
“The Norfolk Southern train derailment left Pennsylvania and Ohio families, businesses, and first responders grappling with a disaster that spilled hazardous materials in their community. It shouldn’t have happened here and it shouldn’t happen anywhere else in America,” Casey added. “The Railway Safety Act will make freight rail safer, hold rail companies accountable for putting communities and workers in harm’s way, and protect people over profits.”
The train derailment launched debate in Washington over increased scrutiny for rail companies. Buttigieg <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/buttigieg-touts-funding-to-improve-rail-safety-in-wake-of-ohio-train-crash-doesnt-mention-what-hes-doing-right-now-to-help" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the White House has been “constrained” on rail safety due to a “braking rule withdrawn by the Trump administration in 2018 because of a law passed by Congress in 2015.” National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy later <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-admin-blames-trump-for-ohio-train-derailment-even-the-ntsb-chair-calls-that-misinformation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">clarified</a> that the rule would not have applied to the train which derailed in East Palestine because of its classification as a “mixed freight train” rather than a “high hazard flammable train.”

Federal investigators have preliminarily <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-details-in-east-palestine-train-derailment-revealed-in-fresh-ntsb-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">concluded</a> that the derailment was caused by a malfunctioning rail axle. “Surveillance video from a residence showed what appears to be a wheel bearing in the final stage of overheat failure moments before the derailment,” the NTSB said in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/investigators-provide-more-details-on-what-caused-ohio-train-disaster" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a>. “The wheelset from the suspected railcar has been collected as evidence for metallurgical examination.”

Sen. John Fetterman&#8217;s (D-PA) office released a statement Monday about his stay in a mental health facility for severe depression, claiming that he was &#8220;doing well.&#8221;
The statement comes after Fetterman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/senator-fetterman-to-be-hospitalized-for-weeks-after-checking-himself-into-hospital">checked</a> himself into an inpatient program two weeks ago where he is likely to remain for &#8220;a few weeks,&#8221; according to his staff.
&#8220;We don&#8217;t have a lot to update folks with since there&#8217;s no real news to report except that John is doing well, working with the wonderful doctors, and remains on a path to recovery,&#8221; Fetterman&#8217;s staff said in a new statement. &#8220;He is visiting with staff and family daily, and his staff are keeping him updated on Senate business and news.&#8221;
&#8220;Our team is moving full speed ahead and working tirelessly for the people of Pennsylvania. Just last week we opened a new office in Erie and will be opening several more offices in the coming weeks,&#8221; the staff continued. &#8220;We understand the intense interest in John&#8217;s status and especially appreciate the flood of well-wishes. Fetterman made the decision to check himself into a mental health hospital after the attending physician of the United States Congress recommended that he do so.
The New York Times reported late last week that Fetterman was struggling with “serious mental health” issues and often cannot understand the words that others are saying to him following the stroke that nearly killed him last year.

The report comes following Fetterman’s hospitalization earlier this month after feeling lightheaded at a Democrat Senate retreat.
Fetterman’s staff claimed that doctors said that he did not have another stroke and that they were checking for signs of seizures.
The report noted that the stroke last year has taken a “very real psychological toll” on him and that he has “had to come to terms with the fact that he may have set himself back permanently by not taking the recommended amount of rest during the campaign.”

Fetterman, who previously served as lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania and mayor of the Rust Belt town of Braddock, suffered a stroke and was hospitalized in May 2022, less than one week before the Democratic primary for the open Senate seat in Pennsylvania. Ramesh Chandra, the official’s cardiologist, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hell-be-fine-pa-democratic-senate-nominee-cleared-by-doctor-to-campaign-after-suffering-a-stroke-days-before-primary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> that Fetterman would be able to run for office and represent the commonwealth as long as he “takes his medication, eats healthy, and stays active.”
Shapiro would be able to appoint a temporary replacement for Fetterman should he elect to resign. He told the Philadelphia Inquirer that no prominent Pennsylvania Democrats have pushed him to ask for the lawmaker’s resignation and clarified that he “would dismiss” any such pressure “immediately.” The former attorney general of Pennsylvania added that he is “really inspired” by Fetterman and his decision to be public with his mental health issues.
The race between Fetterman and Dr. Mehmet Oz, his unsuccessful Republican rival, was marked by questions about the former candidate’s mental acuity. After removing himself from the campaign trail for nearly two months, Fetterman stuttered, slurred, and lost his train of thought during stump speeches throughout the summer and fall. When the two candidates mounted the debate stage in late October, Fetterman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/confident-oz-and-struggling-fetterman-clash-in-pennsylvania-senate-debate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">faltered</a> and provided choppy responses despite the inclusion of a closed captioning system positioned behind the moderators.
NBC News reporter Dasha Burns was one of the few members of the legacy media to report objectively about the health concerns; she faced a deluge of criticism after she conducted an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-senate-candidate-fetterman-forced-to-use-giant-screen-for-interview-this-guys-in-bad-shape" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with Fetterman and reported that he “had trouble finding words” despite his use of a large computer screen and closed captioning system throughout the conversation. Fetterman&#8217;s wife Gisele <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ableist-toward-the-disability-community-john-fettermans-wife-tells-nbc-to-apologize-for-asking-about-his-stroke" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that Burns was “ableist” for noting that her husband had not provided an update on his recovery.
“If this happened in a school, if this was a child that was ableist towards another child or a teacher, there would’ve been issues stated. There would have been new training done,” she commented. “What is being done at the media after a reporter came out so openly ableist towards a person? I think shocked and appalled, but sadly not surprised. I know there’s still so much to do, but it would be great to see some accountability, to actually see real change.”
