The FBI took a trove of documents, three computers, and two iPhones from former National Security Adviser John Bolton&#8217;s home during a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-raids-home-of-former-trump-national-security-adviser-john-bolton?author=Leif+Le+Mahieu&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=FBI+Raids+Home+Of+Former+Trump+National+Security+Adviser+John+Bolton">raid</a> on August 22, according to court records made public on Thursday.
Among the boxes of documents were “typed documents in folders labeled ‘Trump I – IV&#8217;” and a white binder that was labeled, “statements and reflections to allied strikes,” the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/09/04/us-news/heres-what-fbi-agents-took-from-john-boltons-house-in-raid-and-what-charges-he-could-face/">reported</a>. The FBI raided Bolton&#8217;s home as part of an investigation over allegations that Bolton illegally snuck out national security files from the White House during President Donald Trump&#8217;s first term.
The records also revealed that the former national security adviser, who is now a vocal Trump critic, is being investigated for allegedly violating two sections of the Espionage Act of 1917, according to the Post. While Bolton hasn&#8217;t been charged with any crime, if the feds go after him on those two charges, he could face up to 25 years in prison.
Federal agents also swiped hard drives and USB drives during the raid, and agents were allowed to make Bolton unlock any devices, per the search warrant, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/09/04/politics/bolton-search-fbi-court-documents">reported</a>. According to previous court records, the feds are looking into whether Bolton revealed any sensitive national security information about Trump&#8217;s foreign policy during the president&#8217;s first term. After a back-and-forth with Trump officials, Bolton removed classified information from his book manuscript before he published it, according to court records.
Bolton&#8217;s book, &#8220;The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir,&#8221; promises &#8220;the most comprehensive and substantial account of the Trump Administration.&#8221; The book was published in June 2020, less than a year after Trump fired Bolton as National Security Adviser. The Trump administration argued that Bolton&#8217;s book endangered national security.
FBI officials told the Post that an investigation into Bolton&#8217;s handling of sensitive material was paused when former President Joe Biden entered office in 2021, and FBI Director Kash Patel reopened the investigation in February.
“The [Biden administration] had probable cause to know that he had taken material that was detrimental to the national security of the United States, and they made no effort to retrieve it,” a senior FBI official said.
“That was a friendly administration to [Bolton],” the official added. “They kept bashing [Trump] the entire time for ‘weaponizing law enforcement,’ and they — by politically stopping a righteous investigation — are the ones who weaponized law enforcement.”
Bolton has not commented on the raid, but he has continued to criticize Trump&#8217;s foreign policy moves. Following the raid, President Trump claimed that he knew &#8220;nothing about it.&#8221;
“I saw it on television this morning. I’m not a fan of John Bolton. He’s a real … lowlife,” Trump said. “He’s not a smart guy. But he could be a very unpatriotic guy … we’re going to find out. I know nothing about it.&#8221;

Democrats and media personalities scrambled to white knight for former National Security Adviser John Bolton when news broke that the FBI had raided his home and office, but they may soon regret doing so as more information has begun to surface about the investigation.
Democrats and media were quick to defend Bolton, who served as national security adviser during President Donald Trump&#8217;s first term before falling out of favor, claiming that the raid was proof positive that Trump was using the Justice Department to exact revenge on his political enemies. But according to a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/27/us/politics/bolton-trump-emails-fbi-investigation.html">report</a> published by The New York Times on Wednesday, the investigation into Bolton actually picked up steam while former President Joe Biden was in office due to information — uncovered by U.S. intelligence — about Bolton&#8217;s handling of classified information.
Even The New York Times raised the question of whether Trump was using the raids to punish detractors — but also pointed out that Bolton may be in some serious trouble.

The disclosures suggest that a long-running investigation into Mr. Bolton’s activities changed over time, with some of the issues echoing past inquiries into the handling of national security secrets.</blockquote>
According to the report, the investigation began just prior to the publication of Bolton&#8217;s book — &#8220;The Room Where It Happened&#8221; — when the first Trump administration attempted to stop its publication. The book went to print anyway, and the investigation effectively stalled until the intelligence community uncovered the emails.
The investigation has thus far revealed that Bolton had emailed several people who were assisting him in compiling the information he would later use to write his book — and had included information he appeared to have obtained from classified documents to which he had access while serving in the Trump administration.

As The New York Times reported, the raids were conducted in an effort to determine whether Bolton had in his possession records of the same information that was uncovered by the intelligence community. Two federal judges signed off on the warrants.
Just after the raid, however, Democrats and a number of media figures rushed to Bolton&#8217;s defense. ABC News anchor Jonathan Karl framed a Sunday morning segment on the raid as though it was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/abc-frames-bolton-raid-as-trumps-latest-act-of-retribution">absolute proof</a> that Trump&#8217;s Justice Department was being weaponized against anyone he did not like.
The New York Times report appears to be a fair indication that they may have jumped to Bolton&#8217;s defense too quickly, as is the fact Bolton has hired high-powered defense attorney Abbe Lowell — whose past and present clients include Hunter Biden and New York Attorney General Letitia James — to represent him.

Karl went on to list a number of people Trump has said should go to prison — many of whom were named in recent documents pertaining to the Russian collusion hoax — such as former President Barack Obama and former FBI Director James Comey.
He also mentioned Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Attorney General Letitia James (D-NY), both of whom are already being investigated by DOJ attorney Ed Martin, and claimed that those investigations were also retaliatory efforts on behalf of President Trump.
Karl then complained that an outsized percentage of the high-ranking military officers who had been fired under the Trump administration had been women — a move that he said left the military without even one female active duty four-star general — but made no effort to explain why that was necessarily a bad thing.
&#8220;President Trump promised retribution against his political enemies,&#8221; Karl declared. &#8220;And there is no doubt that he is serious about keeping that promise.&#8221;
Karl then pivoted to the raid on Bolton&#8217;s home — which, according to the Justice Department, was part of an investigation into Bolton&#8217;s handling of classified information — and repeatedly suggested that it was simply more evidence that Trump was attacking and punishing his political enemies.

The FBI raided the Maryland home of former National Security Adviser John Bolton on Friday morning as part of a national security investigation involving classified information. 
The New York Post, which first <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/08/22/us-news/patels-fbi-raids-john-boltons-home-in-high-profile-national-security-probe/">reported</a> the raid, said that it was conducted as part of a “high-profile national security probe.” FBI agents began the search around 7:00 am at Bolton’s Bethesda home, the Post reported.

Commenting on FBI Director Kash Patel&#8217;s social media post shortly after the news broke that said &#8220;NO ONE is above the law,&#8221; FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said &#8220;Public corruption will not be tolerated,&#8221; and Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote, &#8220;America’s safety isn’t negotiable. Justice will be pursued. Always.&#8221;
Fox News reported that FBI agents were also seen removing boxes out of Bolton&#8217;s office in Washington, D.C.
When asked about the raid, the FBI told NBC News that it was &#8220;conducting court authorized activity in the area. There is no threat to public safety.&#8221;
The Post also reported that an official said that a previous investigation into Bolton had been quashed “for political reasons.” 
President Donald Trump said Friday morning that he did not know about the raid until he saw the news.

Bolton served in the first Trump administration from April 2018 until September 2019. After Bolton left the White House, he became a frequent critic of Trump. Bolton was previously the ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush. 
In 2020, he published a book called “The Room Where it Happened” that the Trump administration argued endangered national security. Trump’s Justice Department sued to block its publication and distribution, but that lawsuit was ultimately dismissed after Joe Biden became president in 2021.

The book was cited as one of the reasons for the Trump administration to yank Bolton’s security clearance earlier this year. 
“The book was rife with sensitive information drawn from his time in government,” the White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/holding-former-government-officials-accountablefor-election-interference-and-improper-disclosure-of-sensitive-governmental-information/">said</a>. “The memoir’s reckless treatment of sensitive information undermined the ability of future presidents to request and obtain candid advice on matters of national security from their staff.  Publication also created a grave risk that classified material was publicly exposed.”
Trump also moved to pull the Secret Service security detail that was assigned to protect Bolton shortly after he took office in January 2025. Last week, Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/he-really-really-hates-the-president-ex-trump-chief-of-staff-unloads-on-john-bolton">slammed</a> Bolton as &#8220;dumb&#8221; in a Truth Social post written in response to criticism over his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. 
CNN reported that Bolton was not home at the time of the raid.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, urged President Donald Trump over the weekend to reconsider pulling the protective security detail off of several administration officials who served during his first term in office.
Cotton made the remarks during a Sunday interview on &#8220;Fox News Sunday&#8221; when asked about Trump&#8217;s decision to pull the details off of former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former national security adviser John Bolton, and former Iran envoy Brian Hook.
&#8220;I would encourage the president to revisit the decision for those people who are being targeted by Iran,&#8221; Cotton said, noting that even Trump has been a target for Iranian assassination over the last few years in retaliation for the killing of Iranian terrorist commander Qasem Soleimani.
&#8220;As the chairman of the Intelligence Committee, I&#8217;ve reviewed the intelligence in the last few days, the threat to anyone involved in President Trump&#8217;s strike on Qasem Soleimani is persistent,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s real. Iran is committed to vengeance against all of these people.&#8221;
&#8220;In fact, the chief of staff of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence agreed with me that if these threats were against him or his family that he would want security because the threats are real,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;There are gaps in our coverage. We don&#8217;t know what we don&#8217;t know, and it&#8217;s better to be safe than sorry, because it&#8217;s not just about these men who helped President Trump carry on his policy in his first term.&#8221;
Cotton said that the protective details also protect other innocent people who could get caught up in any kind of assassination attempts, including random bystanders in public spaces.
&#8220;It&#8217;s also about the President being able to get good people and get good advice,&#8221; Cotton said. &#8220;If people are saying going to work for the president now on Iran or China or North Korea or the Mexican drug cartels, they might hesitate to do so, or they might hesitate if they&#8217;re in office, to give him the advice he needs or carry out the policies that he decides upon.&#8221;

According to a new <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/23/us/politics/trump-pompeo-security-iran.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a>, President Donald Trump has revoked the security details for his former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Pompeo’s senior policy adviser, Brian Hook, who also served as the U.S. Special Representative for Iran, and Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton.
All three men have been threatened by the theocratic regime of Iran, which blamed Pompeo and Hook for the assassination of Iranian terror master, Iran Revolutionary Guard commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
“God willing, we are looking to kill Trump [and] Pompeo … and military commanders who issued the order should be killed,” Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps aerospace force, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/world/iran-reissues-threat-kill-trump-pompeo-soleimani-death-announcing-long-range-cruise-missile" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in February 2023.
Pompeo, a staunch supporter of Trump during his first term, had both praised and criticized Trump after he left office, lauding Trump’s work on the southern border but <a href="https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/us-politics/mike-pompeo-trump-fox-news-b2357298.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criticizing</a> him for supposedly mishandling classified documents and additional spending which raised the deficit.
Last August, a Pakistani national with what FBI Director Christopher Wray called “close ties to Iran” was arrested and charged with orchestrating a scheme to reportedly <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/pakistani-iran-murder-plot-u-s-officials/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">assassinate</a> Trump as well as other government officials.
According to court documents, in April 2024, Asif Merchant, 46, who revealed he has a wife and children in both Iran and Pakistan, came to the U.S. after spending time in Iran. He contacted someone about his alleged scheme; that person, who became a confidential source (CS), then contacted the FBI. In early June in New York, Merchant met the CS and outlined his alleged plot to commit a series of assassinations in the U.S.

In November, federal law enforcement officials foiled another plan to assassinate then-President-elect Trump that was connected to Iran.
The U.S. Department of Justice unsealed an <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-announces-murder-hire-and-related-charges-against-irgc-asset-and-two" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indictment</a> against multiple individuals who were involved in plots to murder an Iranian dissident, two Jewish Americans, and Trump on U.S. soil.
Prosecutors indicted Farhad Shakeri, 51, of Iran, on multiple charges, including murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, money laundering conspiracy, conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, and conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and sanctions against the Government of Iran.

Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton said during an interview this week that President Joe Biden is effectively insulting his party by refusing to drop out of the presidential race.
Bolton made the remarks during a CNN interview when asked if Democrats should replace Biden and if they have enough time to replace him.
&#8220;Yeah, I think there are two points here,&#8221; said Bolton. &#8220;The message that President Biden basically gave to the Democratic Party yesterday evening was ‘Suit up, lemmings! I’m going off the edge of the cliff and you’re coming with me!'&#8221;
&#8220;Now, if that’s what the Democrats want to do, you know, they will elect Trump, they’ll also help elect a lot more Republican senators and House members,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There is nobody who can guarantee that that debate failure or something similar to it will not occur in September or October, and everybody knows that. And at that point, the Democrats will not have any option. They will be stuck. They will be tied to the mast of Biden’s ship as it goes down.&#8221;
&#8220;This is their last clear chance to do anything,&#8221; he added. &#8220;And all I can say is if they leave Biden as the nominee and Trump wins, I think Trump has an obligation in his victory speech election night to thank Biden and the Democrats for nominating him.&#8221;

Former National Security Advisor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/john-bolton" target="_blank" rel="noopener">John Bolton</a> gave CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer an earful when the longtime broadcaster attempted to push a New York Times-based attack on Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.
The controversy began last week with a New York Times &#8220;exposé&#8221; revealing that an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/justice-alito-gives-his-side-of-story-on-the-neighborhood-spat-behind-nyt-flag-story" target="_blank" rel="noopener">upside-down American flag</a> had been spotted at the Justice&#8217;s home in Alexandria, Virginia. Despite the fact that Alito explained what had happened — his wife had hung the flag amid a dispute with a neighbor — the Times immediately concluded that because the flag was spotted in late January of 2021 and Capitol rioters had also carried upside-down flags, the only possible explanation was that Alito had supported the riots.
Less than a week later, a follow-up <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-york-times-targets-alito-again-this-time-its-for-revolutionary-war-era-flag" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NYT report</a> revealed that Alito also had an &#8220;Appeal to Heaven&#8221; flag — a flag designed by George Washington&#8217;s private secretary and commissioned for use in the Continental Navy in 1775 — at his beach house in New Jersey. And because some of *those* flags had also been spotted on January 6th, the Times naturally ran with that as well.
But when Blitzer attempted to present that narrative to Bolton, the former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. quickly called him out.
&#8220;I first heard of the upside-down American flag as being a Jan. 6 symbol when I read about it in The New York Times about a week ago. I had no idea what was going on in Justice Alito’s wife’s mind when she flew it, but if somebody hadn’t told me that they thought it was a symbol of the Jan. 6 people, I wouldn’t have guessed it. I would have thought maybe she was giving the finger to one of her neighbors, and that may not be appropriate, either,&#8221; Bolton said.
&#8220;But, I’m telling you, it’s getting to a point where people trying to take symbols of American patriotism and turn them against Supreme Court Justices is just over the line!&#8221; Bolton continued.
&#8220;But should a U.S. Supreme Court justice be using these flags that clearly, right now at least, have some political implications, as well as some history there. But, currently, they have political implications,&#8221; Blitzer pushed back, parroting the narrative.

Blitzer was insistent: &#8220;Well, they do have political implications, both of these flags.&#8221;
&#8220;It can’t — you — well, they don’t have political implications to me!&#8221; Bolton said.
&#8220;And they’re involved in Jan. 6,&#8221; Blitzer said, as if that was the deciding factor.
&#8220;A lot of things were used by Jan. 6!&#8221; Bolton observed.
&#8220;Turning the U.S. flag upside down was used by those who supported the insurrection, as you know, and this other flag —&#8221; Blitzer tried again.
&#8220;No! I did not know that! I didn’t know that ’til I read it in The New York Times!&#8221; Bolton said again.
&#8220;Well, a lot of people did know that, and that’s why it’s controversial,&#8221; Blitzer kept hammering the point.
&#8220;Well, it’s controversial for liberals! No, listen, Wolf! It’s controversial for liberals who have it in for Sam Alito,&#8221; Bolton turned the argument on the CNN anchor. &#8220;It’s not controversial for me, and I’m as against Donald Trump as anybody I know in this country.&#8221;
&#8220;So, bottom line, as far as you’re concerned, he should not recuse himself for the sake of the country?&#8221; Blitzer repeated Democrat calls for Alito to recuse himself on any case related to January 6th — something they had previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/clarence-thomas-according-to-the-washington-post-is-the-black-justice-whose-rulings-often-resemble-the-thinking-of-white-conservatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attempted to accomplish</a> with Justice <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/harlan-crow-hits-back-slams-yellow-journalism-and-political-hit-job-on-his-friend-clarence-thomas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Clarence Thomas</a> as well.
&#8220;Wolf, that’s an unfair question. He should certainly not recuse himself; there’s no indication it was intended to support January the 6th, and I’ll tell you, those who are using this tactic against Alito now, it will come back to haunt them,&#8221; Bolton warned. &#8220;It’s an American patriotic flag. I support the right of anybody to fly it, period!&#8221;

Former Trump National Security Adviser John Bolton slammed President Joe Biden over the weekend for encouraging Israel not to respond to Iran&#8217;s attacks on Saturday, saying that he was an &#8220;embarrassment to the United States.&#8221;
Bolton made the remarks during a Sunday CNN interview after Iran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel that included 185 one-way suicide drones, 110 surface-to-surface missiles, and 36 cruise missiles.
&#8220;And unless Iran sees a powerful response, that risk will continue,&#8221; Bolton said. &#8220;And the way to reestablish deterrence is not proportional. That&#8217;s academic talk. The way you establish deterrence is by telling your adversary, if you ever try that again, the price you will pay will be so much higher than any gain you think you can get, you shouldn&#8217;t even think about it.&#8221;
&#8220;So I think Israel has a wide range of potential targets. You start by flattening Iran&#8217;s air defense capabilities,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Next, you might go after headquarters of the regular military and the Revolutionary Guard. You could consider going after their oil infrastructure, the oil fields, the distribution pipelines, the export port facilities.&#8221;
&#8220;And, most importantly, I think Israel should be looking at this as an opportunity to destroy Iran&#8217;s nuclear weapons program, which is the existential threat that Israel faces,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know what they will do. I can&#8217;t predict it. But I will tell you this. If Joe Biden, as some press reports have it, is urging the Israelis not to retaliate at all, he is an embarrassment to the United States. This is an American interest to make sure that Iran, which is the principal threat to international peace and security in the region, is, at a minimum, put in its place to spare Israel, to spare the Gulf Arabs, to spare us from the threat that they pose.&#8221;
President Biden <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-to-netanyahu-u-s-will-not-back-counterstrike-against-iran-report">reportedly</a> told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday that the United States would not support an Israeli counterattack against Iran.
Bolton slammed those in the U.S. who say that diplomacy should be what Israel pursues.
&#8220;Well, how well is diplomacy working so far? Hamas this morning again rejected the cease-fire plan,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And, by the way, I have heard from people in Israel they believe there are less than 20 hostages still alive, that perhaps 100 of them are dead. And if that&#8217;s true, and if Hamas knows it, but has been negotiating these past months on the basis of 40 coming out, with more possibly later, and Hamas itself saying they can only find 27, Hamas may have been conducting a deception operation to build up pressure on Iran, knowing full well it could never meet the diplomatic goals of the administration.&#8221;

Fox News host Tucker Carlson delivered six key questions on Ukraine — and the ongoing war with Russia — to a number of GOP candidates who have either declared a bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination or are likely to do so.
Carlson explained in a video tweeted on Monday that he had been largely impressed with the answers — save for name-dropping a couple of candidates who had not answered the questions at all — and that they had not been in line with the narrative most often heard from prominent Republican leaders like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Carlson began by listing the questions he had asked, saying that he had only thrown them out there because legacy media outlets appeared disinterested in pursuing any avenue that did not end with more money going to Ukraine.

Former National Security Adviser John Bolton — whom Carlson had identified as a potential 2024 hopeful — informed the show that he was busy with other things and could not take the time to respond.
&#8220;Most of the rest of them did get back to us, and we are grateful that they did,&#8221; Carlson continued, adding, &#8220;In general, the answers were fascinating, some of them were so thoughtful and so smart they give you hope for the Republican Party. With only a few exceptions, their answers bore no resemblance at all to the statements you see every day from Mitch McConnell and various Republican committee chairmen in Congress.&#8221;
Carlson went on to say that Republicans in Congress were more likely to be &#8220;committed neocons&#8221; and thus more likely to support funding Ukraine&#8217;s ongoing war than some of the Republicans who are or may be running for president in 2024.
What followed was a preview of the responses from every potential contender – and then a Twitter thread including their complete responses.
Former President Donald Trump, after claiming that Russia would not have attacked Ukraine if he had been in the White House, said that he would demand that Europe pick up a more equitable share in the cost.
&#8220;Start by telling Europe that they must pay at least equal to what the U.S. is paying to help Ukraine,&#8221; he said in part. &#8220;They must also pay us, retroactively, the difference. At a staggering 125 Billion Dollars, we are paying 4 to 5 times more, and this fight is far more important for Europe than it is for the U.S.&#8221;

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has not yet declared a run for the presidency, also weighed in on the issue.
DeSantis, a Navy veteran himself, criticized the Biden administration for failing to define an objective and committing American taxpayers to footing a seemingly endless bill.
&#8220;Without question, peace should be the objective. The U.S. should not provide assistance that could require the deployment of American troops or enable Ukraine to engage in offensive operations beyond its borders,&#8221; DeSantis said, warning against providing aid that could easily be seen as an escalation against Russia. &#8220;F-16s and long-range missiles should therefore be off the table. These moves would risk explicitly drawing the United States into the conflict and drawing us closer to a hot war between the world’s two largest nuclear powers. That risk is unacceptable.&#8221;
Former Vice President Mike Pence said that &#8220;victory&#8221; would be a free and peaceful Ukraine — and suggested that Russia&#8217;s posturing with regard to the nuclear threat was just that.
&#8220;Putin is still &#8216;the small and bullying leader of Russia,&#8217; his talk of nuclear war is a bullying tactic that he used at the start of the invasion. But Putin should know the United States will not be bullied. This administration has not led with strength on the world stage, but America is still a nation that believes peace comes through strength,&#8221; Pence explained.
