Job growth for the month of May again beat expectations as 139,000 jobs were added to the American economy, and the unemployment rate remained steady, according to the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 
The <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a>, released Friday, found that the private sector continued to add jobs while government employment declined. The unemployment rate did not change from April, remaining at 4.2%.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt celebrated the news, saying it reflected President Donald Trump’s successful economic policies. 
“President Trump’s America First Economic Agenda has created a BOOMING economy — jobs are up, unemployment is down, wages are increasing, and inflation is dead,” she <a href="https://x.com/PressSec/status/1930980549906063803">said</a> on social media. “More than 139,000 good jobs were added to the private sector in May, all accounted for by American-born workers. Americans should continue to Trust in President Trump, who continues to beat expectations.”
The 139,000 job growth was more than the 125,000 that had been projected by the Dow Jones estimate. Last month, job growth also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/solid-april-jobs-report-shows-govt-employment-drops-as-private-sector-growth-beats-expectations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">exceeded expectations</a>, although the increase was revised down by 30,000 jobs in the latest report.

Industries that saw the most growth were health care (62,000), leisure and hospitality (48,000), and social assistance (16,000). Federal government employment declined by 22,000. 
The Bureau of Labor Statistics added that there was little change in mining, oil and gas extraction, construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, and the financial activities industries from the previous month. 
At the same time, average hourly pay increased 15 cents to $36.24 last month.

The stock markets rose after the job report was released, with the S&amp;P 500, Nasdaq Composite, and Dow Jones Industrial Average rising by more than one percent.

The United States economy added more jobs than expected in April, while government positions continued to decline, according to the April jobs report.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its monthly <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/archives/empsit_05022025.htm">report</a> on Friday, showing that jobs had increased in April by 177,000, much more than the 133,000 that had been projected by the Dow Jones. At the same time, federal jobs declined by around 9,000 while the healthcare, transportation and warehousing, financial activities, and social assistance industries all saw growth. 
&#8220;This is the second month in a row where the jobs report has beat expectations,&#8221; <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/05/jobs-boom-more-americans-working-for-higher-pay/">said</a> White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. &#8220;Wages are continuing to rise and labor force participation is increasing. This is exactly what we want to see. More Americans working for higher wages. More winning is on the way!”
The healthcare industry added 51,000 jobs, including 22,000 in hospitals and 21,000 in ambulatory services, while transportation and warehousing increased by 29,000, according to the report. The 177,000 jobs were lower than the 185,000 jobs that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/we-cant-lose-march-job-growth-vastly-outpaces-expectations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were added</a> in March, which also beat job growth expectations. 
Unemployment remained at 4.2%, and the labor force participation rate changed little. This was the first jobs report released after President Donald Trump announced &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; tariffs. Most of those tariffs have been lowered to 10% across the board, with a 145% tariff on China.
The markets responded positively to the jobs report, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&amp;P 500, and the Nasdaq all jumping more than 1%.
Responding to the news, the White House&#8217;s official &#8220;Rapid Response&#8221; X account celebrated the job gains made in the private sector and the decline in government employment. According to the White House, more than 95% of the jobs added to the economy under President Donald Trump have come from the private sector, while around 25% of the jobs created during President Joe Biden&#8217;s final two years were government jobs.
&#8220;Federal employment has already shrank by 26,000 jobs under Trump after ballooning by 139,000 jobs in Biden’s last two years. President Trump is right-sizing government while unleashing private-sector growth,&#8221; the account posted.
Trump and his top donor, Elon Musk, have pushed for a variety of cuts across the federal workforce — from the IRS to the State Department — through Musk&#8217;s Department of Government Efficiency project. Some of the cuts have come through firings, while other departments have pushed federal employees to accept buyouts to vacate their jobs.
The White House also celebrated the job gains made among native-born Americans during President Trump&#8217;s first three months in office.
&#8220;Biden relied on government jobs and foreign-born workers. Native-born workers have fueled 97.6% of job growth under President Trump,&#8221; the White House posted. &#8220;In Biden’s final two years, native-born Americans accounted for only HALF (56.9%) of employment gains.&#8221;

A Labor Department program designed to train 16- to 24-year-olds to join the workforce spends more per person annually than Ivy League colleges, but participants wind up making minimum wage on average — raising questions about whether it should continue to exist.
The Job Corps pays teenage runaways, high school dropouts, and twentysomething ex-cons to live in dormitories and receive their GEDs and vocational training. The national cost per graduate was $188,000, with the average graduate staying 13.5 months. Of more than 110 campuses, the 10 least efficient averaged a cost of $385,000 per graduate. Job Corps participants earn $16,695 per year on average after leaving the program, according to new government data.
Nearly $2 billion in federal taxpayer money is spent annually on residential Job Corps campuses, a boon for the for-profit contractors who run them. But the dismal statistics about the program’s efficacy have never been fully public until the Trump administration released a <a href="https://www.dol.gov/newsroom/releases/eta/eta20250425" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Transparency Report”</a> last week.
The Job Corps has only a 32% graduation rate, though statistics have typically been calculated using a misleading definition of “graduate,” which bumped the number up slightly to 39%. Of about 30,000 enrollees in the 2023-24 school year, roughly 10,000 were expelled for misconduct, 5,000 were booted for absconding, and 5,000 dropped out for other reasons. The average cost per enrollee, including those who dropped out or were expelled, was $50,000, with an average stay of 7.5 months, working out to $80,000 per year.
The Old Dominion Job Corps campus in Monroe, Virginia, had 95 enrollees in 2023, at a cost of $137,000 each. Only 17 successfully completed the program, amounting to a cost of $764,000 per graduate. Old Dominion is operated by ODLE Management Group LLC, which runs several campuses.
The Daily Wire reported this month that thousands of young people have been the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/multi-billion-dollar-federal-job-corps-breeding-ground-rape-crime" target="_blank" rel="noopener">victims of assault</a> and other crimes at Job Corps campuses, including a transgender-identifying girl who was assigned to live with a 23-year-old man who was charged with raping her.
A decade of oversight by government auditors and news media has found that the program attracts criminals and that some staff look the other way to avoid expelling members, which would lead to lost revenue — or negative attention — which could jeopardize the program.
At the Old Dominion campus with 95 enrollees, the campus officially reported 46 disciplinary infractions. At the Gary campus in San Marcos, Texas, there were 633 disciplinary incidents among 1,191 enrollees. The Oconaluftee campus in Cherokee, North Carolina, had 205 infractions over 162 enrollees, amounting to more than one per person.
The latest quarter of data showed that 72% of graduates were placed in jobs, though past investigations have found some Job Corps centers cooking the books on those numbers. The Gadsden campus in Alabama reported a 40% job placement rate, while the Gulfport campus in Mississippi claimed 100%.
Job Corps participants were typically not capable of remaining employed for long. After exiting the program, fewer than half had a job a few months out and were still working that job at the one-year mark.

YouTube is full of videos of Job Corps “students” viciously fighting each other, and participants interviewed by The Daily Wire described a culture that is racially charged, where dysfunction dominates, and “snitches” are physically assaulted. Democrats have moved to lower behavioral standards even further by introducing a bill making it harder to expel students.
Contractors pay recruiting bonuses for finding prospects, and participants are paid to take part in the program in addition to covering their room, board, and medical. One recent graduate told The Daily Wire that contractors conceal the program&#8217;s failure to keep the cash coming, and that many participants wind up working in menial jobs they could have done without the expensive training.
“A lot of reasons they allow dangerous behavior to go covered up, as I imagine you may know, has to do with the entire program being a numbers game. The program also fails to complete its actual goal, which is to help at-risk youth find jobs,” he said. &#8220;I can&#8217;t think of a student I knew that has a job in the trade that they trained for. They have jobs in fast food.&#8221;
&#8220;A lot of these kids, their mentality is like middle schoolers. I&#8217;d say it&#8217;s equivalent to an inner city high school but with dorms. Because it&#8217;s with dorms, anything like fights or sexual assaults could happen at any time. Something&#8217;s gonna happen every day. Not everyone is a gangbanger but the vast majority are,&#8221; he added.

GEDs are already available at no cost to young adults from most school districts, and unions often offer free training in the trades, making Job Corps’ value proposition dubious — though the nearly $2 billion a year spent on the program means that contractors will lobby hard to preserve their cash cow.
As part of its Department of Government Efficiency initiatives, the Trump administration may recommend significantly cutting Job Corps’ budget next year, a source familiar with the matter told The Daily Wire.
On April 1, the Labor Department said new enrollees will <a href="https://www.dol.gov/newsroom/releases/dol/dol20250401" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not be accepted</a> at two Maine campuses. The Penobscot campus cost $91,000 per enrollee and had a 41% graduation rate, while the Loring campus cost $42,000 per enrollee, with only 38% completing the program.
“Taxpayers deserve to know the facts and outcomes of their multi-billion-dollar investment,” Labor Department Acting Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training Lori Frazier Bearden said in a statement. “This report underscores the department’s commitment to program transparency and accountability – both of which are essential for effective oversight, informed policymaking, and maintaining public trust.”
As The Daily Wire previously reported, eligibility requirements say that only people on welfare or living in poverty are eligible for the Job Corps, that refugees and non-citizen parolees are eligible, and that “no individual shall be denied enrollment in Job Corps solely on the basis of contact with the criminal justice system, except for the disqualifying felony convictions of murder…child abuse, or a crime involving rape or sexual assault.”
The program requires that applicants not be able to read at higher than an eighth grade level, saying they must be “unable to compute or solve problems… at a level necessary to function on the job, in the individual’s family, or in society,” or he must be homeless, a runaway, a high school dropout, or a victim of sex trafficking.

Federal ‘Job Corps’ Spends Up To $764K Per Graduate. Participants Go On To Earn $17K Annually.

In 2023, actors and writers went on strike as fears over artificial intelligence’s rapid development gripped Tinseltown.
The entertainment workers picketed for weeks, demanding guardrails around AI’s use in Hollywood. They got their wish when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) agreed with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to put new rules into place.
The fears are understandable, especially for those whose jobs are centered on writing scripts or editing videos. But for Jonathan Yunger, AI can be a major boost for Hollywood — the talented people who work there just have to embrace it and learn how to master it.
“Hollywood is old school. They’re scared about being replaced, but I truly believe that, and I’ve been saying this from the beginning, AI is here and it’s not going anywhere,” Yunger told The Daily Wire. “We have to learn to work together.”
Yunger doesn’t just express that belief. He’s putting his career behind it. Yunger — who’s worked on blockbuster films such as “Expendables,” “Hellboy,” “Hitman’s Bodyguard,” and “Rambo” — co-founded <a href="https://www.arcanalabs.ai/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arcana Labs</a>, a new AI production studio that he believes will help lead the way in revolutionizing the way creative content is made.
Many in Hollywood fear that if AI continues to move at the pace tech whizzes expect it to, it won’t be long before it’s capable of producing any type of creative content without the countless hours of dozens of writers and actors. Yunger has a different perspective on Hollywood’s use of AI, saying that creative content will always need “real actors” and “real storytellers.”
“You go to ChatGPT and ask it to tell a joke, it’s not going to tell you a funny joke,” he said. “If you tell it to write a story that will make you cry, it’s not going to make you cry. You still need human involvement. You still need the human element.”
“So Arcana is geared more towards artist-driven AI rather than AI-driven art,” he added.
Arcana’s capabilities were introduced to the world on February 25, when President Donald Trump posted a satirical <a href="https://www.instagram.com/realdonaldtrump/reel/DGhfpgHsOg6/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a> about the remaking of Gaza. The AI-generated video that took social media by storm that day was made by someone who was testing Arcana’s tools, according to Yunger. Now, the company based in Los Angeles has $5.5 million in funding and <a href="https://deadline.com/2025/04/ai-content-platform-arcana-labs-raises-5-5-million-1236369763/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">officially launched</a> its production studio earlier this week with SEMCAP AI and co-CIOs Walter Buckley and Cyrus Vandrevala jumping on board.
“It was around the time I was doing ‘Hellboy’ — I wasn’t using any AI in ‘Hellboy’ — but me and my co-founder Hank Hoffman got hipped to generative AI at the time,” Yunger told The Daily Wire in his first interview since the launch of Arcana AI’s production studio. “And I was like, ‘Wow, it’s amazing.’”
Yunger said that AI’s capabilities to immediately turn words into images were “like the ultimate high” for a producer, but he added that he soon grew frustrated with the new tool because it took “hundreds of generations” to get AI to generate the image he had in his mind.
“This is amazing tech, but how do you incorporate this into a workflow if you’re either making a movie or making a comic book, or whatever it is, and you’re on a deadline?”
Out of this question, Arcana AI was born, and Yunger and his team believe it will help kickstart the “future of filmmaking.” Arcana also offers tools for small businesses, photographers, videographers, and everyone in between. Content creators and companies have already begun extensively using AI to produce everything from short films and memes to marketing campaigns and advertisements. Even Jeremy’s Razors, which shares common ownership with The Daily Wire, released a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzMXJct5WQ8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fully AI-generated commercial</a> earlier this year.
As AI continues to grow, a top priority for Arcana is to ensure that creators have a place to develop their skills with AI without fearing censorship. Yunger said that many other AI programs don’t allow creators to make scenes that include violence, blood, horror, or nudity. He argued that since AI is going to play a major role in the future of artistic content, it’s vital to allow artists the freedom to create content without fear of censorship.
“Imagine if they said, &#8216;No more nudity in every single art museum in the world.’ Or imagine if the Renaissance was censored, or imagine if every movie studio said, ‘Okay guys, only PG-13 movies from now on,’” Yunger said. “That is an attack on our liberty.”
Striking a balance between creative liberty and inappropriate content is an age-old question that AI is also facing. One of the biggest concerns is how AI is all-too-often used for sexual predation, such as revenge porn and “deepfake” nudity.
As AI has progressed, so has the ability of bad actors to create realistic images and videos that show the faces of real people who gave no consent for their likeness to be remade through artificial intelligence. The top targets of this unethical use of AI are celebrities, women, and girls, whose faces are attached to pornographic images. Often, the victims are underage girls who learn that one or more of their classmates used a “nudify” program to generate naked photos of them, as <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/23/opinion/deepfake-sex-videos.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> by The New York Times last year.
When asked about the troubling trend of AI being used for revenge porn or other illegal activities, Yunger said that Arcana can both defend free speech and stamp out unethical uses of its studio. Arcana’s security protocols warn users if they type a potentially illegal prompt into the AI generator and identify illegal content and those who create it.
“We have technology deployed that basically stamps every image made on Arcana with the username in an invisible watermark,” he told The Daily Wire. The security system allows Arcana to quickly identify illegal content and track down who is behind it.
Creators on Arcana are free to make what they want, but Yunger added that if something gets sent to the police, “We will find you very, very quickly.”
Excitement and fear around AI will remain as the technology affects more industries, jobs, and people, and Yunger acknowledged that “at the end of the day, things shift,” and those in Hollywood will have to keep up with the changes AI brings just as previous generations adapted to the computer revolutionizing the way people work.
“I don’t think AI will replace people,” Yunger added. “I think people who use AI will replace people who don’t.”

The monthly jobs report released Friday showed that 228,000 jobs were added to the economy in March, strongly outpacing the growth predicted by analysts. 
The Bureau of Labor Statistics <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> found that transportation and warehousing, healthcare, social assistance, and retail were the largest growth areas. The employment rate remained relatively steady from February, ticking up to 4.2% from 4.1%. 
March job growth rose significantly above the 140,000 increase forecasted by the Dow Jones. The rise was also much larger than the 158,000 average 12-month increase, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 
The report showed that 54,000 jobs were added in healthcare, 24,000 in social assistance, 23,000 in transportation and warehousing, and 24,000 in retail. The jump in retail jobs was aided by more than 10,000 grocery workers <a href="https://apnews.com/article/king-soopers-grocery-strike-ends-denver-e3195f8b00754ec75699ae43d83aeac6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ending</a> a strike in February. 
The previous 12-month average for transportation and warehousing was a monthly gain of 12,000. 
One sector that saw a notable decline was federal government jobs, which fell by 4,000. That number doesn’t include workers who are on paid leave or getting severance pay, the Bureau of Labor Statistics noted. In February, there was an 11,000 decline in government jobs. Those cuts came after the Trump administration moved to fire thousands of workers through its Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) project.

The strong jobs report comes amid economic uncertainty after Trump imposed widespread tariffs on countries across the globe, leading to a tumbling stock market. Trump has said that his economic policies will increase domestic production and entice foreign investment in American industry.

The Trump administration celebrated the increase in manufacturing jobs during President Donald Trump’s first full month in office as the February job report was released on Friday. 
The <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> from the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that 151,000 jobs were added to the economy in February, including 10,000 new manufacturing jobs. Federal government jobs declined by 10,000 as the Trump administration has pushed to slash the size of the government bureaucracy. 
“In one month under President Trump, the American economy is soaring back to greatness after the economic calamity left by Joe Biden,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/03/manufacturing-is-roaring-back-under-president-donald-j-trump/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “The manufacturing industry is already rebounding as there were 9,000 new auto jobs created — the most auto jobs added in 15 months!”
“Under President Trump, the private sector is leading the way — 93% of the job gains in February were in the private sector. This is great news for American workers and families. The White House said that the report was a “swift turnaround” from the Biden administration, saying that 111,000 manufacturing jobs were lost in Biden’s final year in office. 
The report found that most growth was in the health care, transportation, warehouse, social assistance, and financial industries. The unemployment rate was at around 4.1%, a slight uptick from January. 
The overall job group was 19,000 less than the 170,000 increase that had been predicted by the Dow Jones.
The most notable decline was in federal government jobs, which comes as Trump&#8217;s Department of Government Efficiency has pushed cuts across the sprawling federal bureaucracy.

The Labor Department issued its January jobs report on Friday, revealing that the last month of the Biden presidency was another instance of the Biden administration falling short and that the revised monthly average for jobs in all of 2024 had been overstated.
One hundred forty-three thousand jobs were added in January, which fell short of economic forecasts for the month, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02/07/business/jobs-report-january-economy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acknowledged</a>, adding, “The revised monthly average for all of 2024 is 166,000 jobs, less than previously thought. With upward revisions to November and December, January looks like a step down.” Economists had set expectations of 175,000 new jobs in January, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/harryholzer/2025/02/07/first-jobs-report-of-2025-labor-market-still-solid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Forbes</a> reported.
“Today’s jobs report reveals the Biden economy was far worse than anyone thought, and underscores the necessity of President Trump’s pro-growth policies,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/2025/02/statement-from-the-press-secretary-on-januarys-jobs-reports/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a> in response to the report. “During his first weeks in office, President Trump declared a national energy emergency to Make America Energy Dominant Again, pledged to cut 10 regulations for every new regulatory action, and outlined a plan to deliver the largest tax cut in history for hardworking Americans. Biden presiding over the growth of inflation was a major factor in Donald Trump’s election to the presidency in November. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) <a href="https://energycommerce.house.gov/posts/one-year-later-even-president-biden-admits-the-inflation-reduction-act-failed-to-lower-costs-for-americans">noted</a> in August 2023, one year after Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act was passed, that since the start of the Biden-Harris administration, the cost of groceries had soared roughly 20%, gas prices were up almost 62%, natural gas prices had risen more than 40%, and the Congressional Budget Office expected the launch prices of drugs to increase.
“To me, that is the lasting legacy and differentiator between the two administrations,” Joseph LaVorgna, chief U.S. economist at SMBC Nikko Securities, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/19/charting-the-biden-economy-deeply-unpopular-despite-growth-and-jobs.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>. “Inflation was two-and-a-half times higher under President Biden than it was under President Trump. That essentially was the key catalyst for the return to Trump’s policy, which was one of very good growth and low and stable inflation.”

January Jobs Report: Biden Fell Short Of Expectations. Again.

The rate of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/economy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">labor participation</a> among native-born Americans has slumped while the number of immigrants in the workforce has surged, a new report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) indicates.
The drop among native-born Americans was pronounced among men within their prime working years, the CIS study explains.
“The share of working-age (16 to 64) U.S.-born men not in the labor force increased from 11 percent in April 1960 to 17 percent in April 2000, and to 22 percent in April 2024,” the report states. “Among ‘prime-age’ U.S.-born men (25 to 54), the group most likely to work, the share not in the labor force was 4 percent in April 1960, 9 percent in 2000 and 12 percent in 2024.”
CIS found that 45 million native-born American men and women between the ages of 16 and 64 were not in the labor force as of April, marking an increase of 8.5 million since 2000. It also accounted for the aging of the population, explaining that “even the share of younger U.S.-born men (25 to 34) not in the labor force has increased over the last six decades.”
“Focusing only on U.S.-born men without a bachelor’s degree and excluding teenagers still shows the share (20 to 64) not in the labor force increased from 7 percent in 1960 to 16 percent in 2000, and to 22 percent in 2024,” the CIS study says.
The number of American-born men who are not in the labor force surged by a whopping 13.2 million from 1960 to 2024, CIS points out. Immigrant men’s participation in the labor force surged by 14.1 million during the same period of time, however.

The lead author behind the report, Steven Camarota, contended that an over reliance on immigrant labor has harmed American workers.
“Relying on immigrant workers has allowed our country to ignore the decades-long decline in labor force participation,” he asserted. “Reducing immigration would cause wages to rise, incentivizing work and compelling policymakers to undertake much-needed reforms in welfare and disability programs.”

A dismal <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">jobs report</a> released Friday showed that just 12,000 jobs were added to the U.S. economy in October, much lower than the 100,000 analysts expected. 
The report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics also noted a downward revision for August and September, saying it had overestimated growth by around 112,000 jobs. CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/01/us-jobs-report-october-2024.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the 12,000 jobs added in October was the fewest since December 2020.
“Within professional and business services, employment in temporary help services declined by 49,000 in October. Temporary help services employment has decreased by 577,000 since reaching a peak in March 2022,” the bureau found. “Manufacturing employment decreased by 46,000 in October, reflecting a decline of 44,000 in transportation equipment manufacturing that was largely due to strike activity.”

The report indicated that the impact of hurricanes and a Boeing strike contributed to the paltry job numbers. The southeast U.S. was hammered by Hurricane Helene at the end of September, while Hurricane Milton tore through Florida just a week later.
Sectors where employment ticked up included health care and government. 
Numbers were also down for August and September, noting the actual jobs added in those months were much lower than first estimated. 
“The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for August was revised down by 81,000, from +159,000 to +78,000, and the change for September was revised down by 31,000, from +254,000 to +223,000. With these revisions, employment in August and September combined is 112,000 lower than previously reported,” the bureau noted.

The unemployment rate for October was 4.1%, with an estimated 7 million unemployed. “These measures are higher than a year earlier, when the jobless rate was 3.8 percent, and the number of unemployed people was 6.4 million,” the bureau noted.

The Trump campaign quickly jumped on the jobs report. 
“This jobs report is a catastrophe and definitively reveals how badly Kamala Harris broke our economy,&#8221; Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. &#8220;In a single month, Kamala’s failed economic agenda wiped out nearly 30,000 private sector jobs and nearly 50,000 manufacturing jobs. Working families are being ripped off by the Harris-Biden economic agenda. Kamala broke the economy. President Trump will fix it.&#8221;
“BRUTAL: Just 12,000 jobs were created last month — FAR fewer than the 100,000 jobs economists expected. 46,000 manufacturing jobs were lost last month,” Trump War Room posted on X. 
Senior Trump advisor Jason Miller said the report was a “f***ing disaster for Vice President Kamala Harris.&#8221;

A CNN report noted that official statistics show that significantly more manufacturing jobs were also lost during the presidencies of &#8220;George H.W. Bush (1.27 million)&#8221; and under former President Barack Obama (195,000) than under Trump, providing the numbers under Eisenhower (1.2 million), Ford (767,000), and Reagan (582,000).
The CNN report also pointed out that because Trump only had one term so far, his loss of jobs does not even set a record among those presidents who only served once.
During the 2024 campaign, Trump has focused much of his attention on the economy, blasting the Biden-Harris administration’s record on the issue. Voters also list the economy and inflation, which reached 9.1% under President Joe Biden, as the top issues heading into the election.
Harris has also focused on addressing Americans’ economic woes during her campaign and has largely blamed corporate greed for a rise in prices. In August, Harris <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kamala-blasted-after-unveiling-soviet-style-price-controls-to-stop-inflation-kamalanomics">proposed</a> “the first-ever federal ban on corporate price-gouging,” a policy that was compared to Soviet-style price controls on food.

Just weeks before Election Day, the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits has increased to the highest level in more than a year.
In <a href="https://www.dol.gov/sites/dolgov/files/OPA/newsreleases/ui-claims/20242123.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a news release</a> on Thursday, the U.S. Department of Labor announced that, for the week ending October 5, there were 258,000 jobless claims, up 33,000 from the previous week’s 225,000 claims. This is the highest number of jobless claims since the week of August 5, 2023.
The Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/unemployment-benefits-jobless-claims-layoffs-labor-669ecbeed289ec3971f021c02a99b669" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke</a> to analysts who blamed the increase on Hurricane Helene, but a Daily Wire review of the initial claims filed for the past week shows that is not the whole story.
North Carolina, which suffered the most under Hurricane Helene, saw a 290% increase in jobless claims – 8,534 more than the previous week. While North Carolina saw the largest percentage jump, Michigan – which was unaffected by Helene – also saw a large percentage increase of 140%, and had the highest single jump in jobless claims at 9,490. California, which was also not affected by the hurricane, had the third highest increase in claims at 4,484.
Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee, which were also damaged by Helene, saw a 69%, 83%, and 72% increase in jobless claims, respectively. Kentucky also had a large percentage increase (146%) due to damage from the hurricane, though its effects have not been extensively covered by the media. Alabama and Georgia, which were also hit by Hurricane Helene, each saw fewer than 1,000 new jobless claims.
The increase from those states affected by the hurricane only adds up to 18,210 new claims – or a little more than half of the rise in applications for unemployment benefits filed last week. In fact, 43 states saw an increase in jobless claims in the past week, while only a handful of states were affected by Hurricane Helene.

Another factor the AP noted was the continuous effect of high interest rates on the labor market. Between 2022 and 2023, the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates repeatedly until the federal funds rate hit a two-decade high of 5.3%. This pushed mortgage rates up to 8%, making the housing market crisis worse for buyers and having little to no effect on inflation. The Fed has recently started lowering interest rates, reducing it by half a percentage point last month.
According to the AP, the Fed’s goal is to bring down inflation without causing a recession, even though many Americans are struggling to pay bills now.
The federal government on Thursday also reported that inflation has reached its lowest point since February 2021, just after President Joe Biden took office, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-prices-interest-rates-economy-federal-reserve-cd6d9712bfd484d6e1bc4ccb958dcf23" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. What that actually means is that inflation is still rising, but rose slower than it has in three years. Inflation rose by 2.4% last month from a year earlier, which was the smallest annual increase since February 2021. So, while the media may report that inflation is going down, prices are still rising.

Unemployment Claims Surge To Highest Level In A Year As Election Day Looms

Fewer jobs were added to the U.S. economy in August than expected, while unemployment slightly decreased from July, according to the most recent report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday. 
The data indicates that 142,000 jobs were added last month, about 20,000 less than the 161,000 economists had <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/09/06/jobs-report-august-2024.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expected</a>. Unemployment declined from 4.3% in July, the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/unemployment-rate-reaches-highest-point-in-nearly-3-years" target="_blank" rel="noopener">highest</a> since October 2021, to 4.2% in August. 
According to the report, the two largest sectors for growth last month were construction and healthcare, which added 34,000 and 31,000 jobs, respectively. The labor force participation rate is 62.7%, which is about the same as last year. 
“The number of people employed part time for economic reasons was little changed at 4.8 million in August,” the <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> said. “This measure is up from 4.2 million a year earlier. These individuals would have preferred full-time employment but were working part time because their hours had been reduced or they were unable to find full-time jobs.”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has consistently revised job creation numbers downward over the last few months, including drops of 25,000 in July and 61,000 in June. Last month, it revealed that for the year that ran from April 2023 to March 2024, the bureau <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/labor-dept-overestimated-job-growth-by-more-than-800k-revises-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener">overestimated</a> the number of jobs created by 818,000.

Some economists said the report suggested that the economy is still struggling as fears of a recession prompted global markets to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dow-drops-more-than-1000-points-as-global-markets-plunge-amid-recession-fears" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plunge</a> last month. 
Analyzing the report, Heritage Foundation economist E.J. Antoni <a href="https://x.com/RealEJAntoni/status/1832038872726819243" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a> that the economy was losing higher-paying jobs while adding part-time jobs. 
“All of the net job growth in Aug was part-time employment (+527k), while full-time jobs plummeted (-438k); we&#8217;re hemorrhaging higher-paying jobs w/ benefits and replacing them with multiple part-time ones &#8211; these higher payroll numbers are a sign of impoverishment, not growth,” he said. 
Alfredo Ortiz, CEO of Job Creators Network, <a href="https://www.jobcreatorsnetwork.com/press_releases/job-creators-network-responds-to-august-jobs-report/">said</a> the report “reveals accelerating weakness in the American economy.”
“Job creation was below expectations, and half of new positions were created in the unproductive government or quasi-government healthcare and social services sector,” he added. &#8220;A record 8.2 million Americans have second jobs. Prior months’ job creation was significantly revised down – again. So far this year, the number of unemployed Americans has increased by one million.”
