Around a decade ago, Chip and Joanna Gaines remained mostly silent after Buzzfeed published a hit piece condemning them for attending a church that believed in a biblical definition of marriage in 2016.
This year, the couple cast a gay couple with adopted twin boys in a show on their Magnolia Network.
Now, the couple’s conservative supporters are wondering: what happened?
It would be an understatement to say that the Gaines family of 2016 is nothing like the entertainment powerhouse couple they’ve become today. Chip and Joanna have built a sprawling lifestyle empire, including a retail brand and emporium, partnerships with major brands like Target, a sit-down restaurant in their hometown of Waco, a renovated hotel, and most significantly, the Magnolia Network, a television channel all their own.
This success all goes back to the couple’s big break, with the HGTV show “Fixer Upper.” Prior to being discovered by the lifestyle network, Joanna said she and Chip were “broke.”
“I remember when we first got married the only money we had was what was in Chip’s pocket,” Joanna <a href="https://people.com/home/hgtv-chip-joanna-gaines-were-broke-before-fixer-upper/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> People in 2020. “He always had a wad of cash, but we were broke. If I needed to go grocery shopping it’s whatever was in his pocket. That’s how we paid the bills.”
After “Fixer Upper” debuted in 2013, everything changed. America couldn’t get enough of the loving, wholesome couple living on a Texas homestead and teaming up to tackle renovation projects in the Lone Star State. And while they didn’t openly evangelize on the show, viewers were able to draw a few conclusions about their faith based on both their lifestyle and where they went to church. Soon, they’d amassed a huge audience among Christian conservatives.
It also didn’t escape notice that while HGTV mainstays such as “House Hunters” frequently included same sex couples, “Fixer Upper” never did. All of this helped make the Gaineses poster children of conservatives seeking woke-free, kid-friendly content to watch with the whole family.
Buzzfeed hit back against the couple’s rising popularity in 2016 by insinuating that Chip and Joanna were unrepentant bigots.
“Their church, Antioch Community Church, is a nondenominational, evangelical, mission-based megachurch. And their pastor, Jimmy Seibert, who described the Gaineses as ‘dear friends’ in a recent video, takes a hard line against same-sex marriage and promotes converting LGBT people into being straight,” reporter Kate Aurthur <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/kateaurthur/chip-and-joanna-gaines-church-same-sex-marriage?utm_term=.cpdX61PGe#.uc324KnVY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in the piece.
Aurthur said she reached out to Antioch representatives so they could clarify their stance, only to find herself directed to the church’s <a href="https://antiochwaco.com/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> for clarification. That’s where the teaching still says, “Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. The husband and wife are of equal worth before God since both are created in God’s image.”
The author also quoted a sermon Seibert delivered in 2015 following the legalization of gay marriage.
&#8220;This is a clear biblical admonition. So if someone were to say, &#8216;Marriage is defined in a different way,&#8217; let me just say: They are wrong,&#8221; the pastor told his congregation at the time. &#8220;God defined marriage, not you and I. God defined masculine and feminine, male and female, not you and I.&#8221;
Following the publication of the Buzzfeed piece, HGTV was quick to say they supported and affirmed same sex relationships.
“We don’t discriminate against members of the LGBT community in any of our shows. HGTV is proud to have a crystal clear, consistent record of including people from all walks of life in its series,&#8221; a rep for the network said.
But the Gaineses didn’t release a statement directly for either side of the argument. Instead, at the time, they alluded to being hurt by the allegations and issued vague statements about “loving everyone” while remaining neutral on the main point of contention.
Two months after the BuzzFeed News article was published, Chip appeared to reference the controversy in a since-deleted blog post on the Magnolia Market website.
“It’s not about what color your skin is, how much money you have in the bank, your political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender, nationality, or faith,” he wrote. “That’s all fascinating, but it cannot add or take away from the reality that we’re already pulling for you. We are not about to get in the nasty business of throwing stones at each other, don’t ask us to cause we won’t play that way.&#8221;
Then, during a 2021 <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/chip-joanna-gaines-fixer-upper-magnolia-network-1234975027/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with The Hollywood Reporter, Joanna said she was sick of constantly being dragged by leftists.
“The accusations that get thrown at you, like you’re a racist or you don’t like people in the LGBTQ community, that’s the stuff that really eats my lunch — because it’s so far from who we really are,” she told the outlet. “That’s the stuff that keeps me up.”
Everything exploded earlier this month when the Gaineses featured Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs on their Magnolia Network series “Back to the Frontier.” The married men appear on the show with their 10-year-old twin sons, Ethan and Lucas.
The men said they chose to go on the show to help normalize their family structure.
“We’ve always felt it to be important that we try to be an example for same-sex couples,” Hanna said during an <a href="https://www.queerty.com/these-dads-fought-to-be-legally-recognized-as-parents-now-theyre-blazing-new-trails-on-back-to-the-frontier-20250711/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with the outlet Queerty. “And so we’re super honored that, when they were choosing three modern day families, they did choose the same size couple as a modern-day family — because we are; we’re your neighbors, and your coworkers. And so it was this amazing opportunity to [continue to] normalize same-sex couples and same-sex families.”
The inclusion of Hanna and Riggs may have had leftists feeling smug. But conservatives and Evangelicals who had looked to the Gaineses as role models over the years felt betrayed.
Ed Vitagliano, vice president of the American Family Association, publicly called out the couple for disappointing their fan base.
“This is sad and disappointing, because Chip and Joanna Gaines have been very influential in the evangelical community,” Ed Vitagliano, vice president of the American Family Association, said on X.  “In the past, they have stood firm on the sanctity of marriage regardless of the personal cost that has entailed.”
Franklin Graham, son of the famed evangelist Billy Graham, also posted about the controversy on X, calling it “very disappointing.”
“While we are to love people, we should love them enough to tell them the truth of God’s Word. His Word is absolute truth. God loves us, and His design for marriage is between one man and one woman. Promoting something that God defines as sin is in itself sin,” he <a href="https://x.com/Franklin_Graham/status/1944182299630645553" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>.
The backlash was swift and fierce, which prompted Chip to issue a response on social media.
“Talk, ask [questions], listen.. maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never,” he shared with his followers just after the show premiered. “It’s a sad sunday when ‘non believers’ have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian.”
The response caused even more anger among the Gaineses&#8217; former fan base. Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro laid out why that might be.
“Many of the followers of Chip and Joanna Gaines are not only upset with the fact that the show is featuring this sort of stuff, they’re upset with the fact that Chip is now sneering at them, looking down his nose at them, and suggesting that the real problem here is not that he has violated his own faith standards by promulgating a set of values that is unChristian, but that he believes that Christians themselves, by objecting to that promulgation, are thus demonstrating that they’re intolerant and vicious and mean by objecting to the normalization of what Christians consider to be sinful,” he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chip-and-joanna-gaines-sell-out" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
“That is not mean or intolerant,” Shapiro added. “That is simply saying there is a standard, and if you purport to be an upholder of that standard, you should abide by it.”
Finally, Seibert — still the pastor at Antioch Church — issued a new statement reiterating his position on the issue. While he didn’t mention the Gaineses specifically, his timing couldn’t have been more obvious.
“In Genesis 1, the Scripture says that God created us male and female. He created us in His image and He blessed us. There’s two genders – male and female. We’re to celebrate that and honor that,” Seibert said in a <a href="https://x.com/JonnyRoot_/status/1946621963847516412" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a> posted July 19.
“Secondly, in Genesis 2, we see that marriage is between one man and one woman in covenant for life, and that children are to be born in that context of covenantal marriage, and that out of that to be loved, blessed, and cared for.”
He says if anyone finds themselves “in a different perspective,” they should go back to Jesus and “realign to God’s design of covenantal marriage between one man and one woman for life.”
Seibert notes that the church’s position hasn’t changed in 25 years, and that the message is one of “compassion” and of “clarity.”
Chip and Joanna Gaines adapted to mainstream culture when many of their fans celebrated them for doing the exact opposite. Only time will tell whether or not this shift will cut into their commercial success.

Chip and Joanna Gaines, whose public embrace of their Christian faith has made them especially popular among American Evangelicals, are facing new allegations of hypocrisy.
The “Fixer Upper” stars serve as producers for &#8220;Back To The Frontier,&#8221; a new show on HBO Max in which three families attempt to live as 19th-century homesteaders. One of the couples, Jason and Joe Hanna-Riggs, are gay men with adopted children. Their inclusion in the show has caused some Christians to accuse the reality stars of failing to live up to the values they have publicly espoused.

Chip and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joanna-gaines">Joanna Gaines</a> are reflecting on 20 years of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/marriage">marriage</a> and how their relationship has changed over the past two decades.
The couple shot to fame after appearing on the hit <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/television">HGTV</a> reality series “Fixer Upper,” which followed them as they renovated homes in their hometown of Waco, Texas. Eventually, the Gaineses translated that popularity into a lifestyle media empire, which now consists of their own TV network, a retail emporium, multiple bestselling books, and dozens of product collaborations and other branded merchandise.
Chip, 49, and Joanna, 45 are known for their family-first mentality, which prompted them to take a break from television when their children were younger. Now the couple is discussing how things are different as they enter the next phase of their lives.
&#8220;I would say, as we&#8217;re getting older, I&#8217;m shifting and I&#8217;m more like Chip, and Chip is more like me,&#8221; Joanna told <a href="https://people.com/chip-and-joanna-gaines-embrace-changes-in-their-marriage-after-20-years-8404426">People</a> about her husband during an interview published November 20. 
&#8220;Jo and I are in this beautiful moment. We&#8217;re evolving into each other,&#8221; Chip agreed. &#8220;It&#8217;s the second part of our marriage.&#8221;
On the show, Chip was notorious for his goofy antics and practical jokes, while Joanna was always more outwardly practical and reserved. 
“I want to be her biggest cheerleader,” Chip said of his wife exploring her more adventurous side. “I’m like, ‘Hey, you go do whatever. My knees are killing me.’”
Joanna joked about her new outlook being like a “midlife crisis.” She also said now that she’s in her mid forties, “we just see life differently now.”
“You’ve rubbed off on me,” Joanna told Chip at another point in the interview. “I think that’s the beauty of relationships in general. If Chip weren’t my partner, I would probably still be in the corner. From the moment I met him, he’s always experienced change in a positive way. Even if it was negative, it was, ‘All right. What do we do next?’&#8221;
“I believe it now,” she said. “We’ve had so much change in our lives, and the proof is there: Change is hard, but it’s always beautiful.”
&#8220;I hope that it&#8217;s just the beginning,&#8221; Chip said. &#8220;I hope that we get to look back in 20 years from now, and feel just as confident that we were meant to be. We really feel like we are in some ways just getting started.&#8221;
The Gaineses have five children: Drake, 18, Ella, 17, Duke, 15, Emmie, 13, and Crew, 5.
Joanna also reflected on the transition of sending their oldest to college, which she said helps her appreciate her 5-year-old even more.
“It’s this tension of joy and pain, all in one breath,” Joanna said of dropping off Drake at school. “Even now when I’m setting the table, I have to consciously go, ‘Oh, there’s only six here.’”

Fans of Chip and Joanna Gaines are making some strong demands as the culture war reaches a fever pitch. Though “silence is violence” has always been the rallying cry for progressives, it seems now conservatives are embracing a similar stance when it comes to the multi-millionaire renovation experts. 
In 2017, the couple debuted their Hearth &amp; Hand with Magnolia home product line at Target. It’s been massively successful ever since. This partnership inspired fans of the Christian couple to demand they cut ties with the retailer. 
They say if Chip and Jo don’t cut ties with Target, or at the very least denounce the company’s  over-the-top pride collection for 2023, they are in effect saying they condone it. And those fans? They’re not happy about it.
Pride month collections featured front and center at Target locations nationwide are nothing new. But this year things are a little different, which has in turn prompted a strong response from consumers.
First, some of the items being advertised go beyond run-of-the mill pride flag tank tops. Some of the most controversial items for sale were from a collection of “chest binders” and “tuck-friendly” female swimwear specifically targeted to anyone who identified as transgender — items positioned in areas of the store clearly visible to shoppers of all ages.
There are also baby-sized items with pride messages, a board book called “Bye Bye Binary,” and even rainbow merchandise for pets. And that’s not all.
Another item of concern for Target customers is the background of one pride collection designer. Erik Carnell partnered with the retailer to make a mini messenger bag with the slogan “We Belong Everywhere,” a tote bag with the phrase “Too Queer For Here,” and a sweatshirt with “Cure Transphobia, Not Trans People” to sell in Target’s pride collection this year. 
Boycott advocates were furious to discover that Carnell’s Etsy shop also features designs that say, “Satan Respects Pronouns” and “Trans Witches For Abortion,” per a previous Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/target-partner-who-sells-satan-respects-pronouns-art-sees-sales-soar-after-backlash" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a>.
Through this all Chip and Joanna have remained silent even as the boycott gains traction. Target reported a $6 billion decrease in its market capitalization since the controversy began. This, coupled with the successful boycott of Bud Light for partnering with trans activist Dylan Mulvaney, has conservatives demanding the Gaineses to take a side. 
Joanna Gaines has comments turned off on Instagram, though it&#8217;s unclear exactly when or why she made that change. This has fans flocking to Chip Gaines’s Instagram page and to their Magnolia page to demand answers.
“As a father of small children, I am appalled that you would continue to be associated with [Target],” one commenter wrote. “Joanna has turned her comments off, which is totally an act of cowardice. Take a stand. You can take the financial loss. God will bless you 10 fold. Stand up!!!”
“This is a spiritual battle against families! Do the right thing! Doing nothing is speaking volumes,” another person wrote.
“Get out of Target. Please, for the love of children, take a stand,” a third follower echoed.
“SILENCE SPEAKS LOUDLY!! Especially when it comes to the indoctrination and sexualization of our children… and the glorification of Satan. Very disappointed,” another person said. “Money is not everything… morality, character and ethics are of true value. My money counts and I will not be spending it in Target, nor anyone who does not speak up and out!”
There were plenty of people in the comments who pointed out how the Gaineses partnered with Target long after the company became controversial for conservatives. They argued that the retailer made its position known in April of 2016 when it changed its bathroom policy from having female-only bathrooms and male-only bathrooms to a “gender-inclusive” policy. Since Chip and Joanna launched their collection a full year later, these followers claim there’s little chance of them cutting ties now.
This is not the first time the Gaineses got embroiled in controversy, though it is the first time they angered their conservative fans.
Leftist critics tried to cancel the Gaineses for attending a church that promoted traditional marriage between one man and one woman. <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/kateaurthur/chip-and-joanna-gaines-church-same-sex-marriage">BuzzFeed</a> published an investigation into Antioch Community Church and its pastor, Jimmy Seibert, after he referred to the Gaineses as his “good friends” in 2016.
“This is a clear biblical admonition. So if someone were to say, ‘Marriage is defined in a different way,’ let me just say: They are wrong,” Seibert said in his sermon following the Obergefell v. Hodges decision which mandated all states to recognize same-sex marriage. “God defined marriage, not you and I. God defined masculine and feminine, male and female, not you and I.” 
In that situation, the Gaineses addressed the cancel mob with a vague statement. 
“Joanna and I have personal convictions,” Chip wrote in a now-deleted <a href="https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/entertainment/news/a47563/chip-joanna-gaines-controversies/">blog post</a>. “One of them is this: we care about you for the simple fact that you are a person, our neighbor on planet earth. It’s not about what color your skin is, how much money you have in the bank, your political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender, nationality or faith.” 
Joanna referenced that scandal and accusations of racism during a 2021 <a href="https://www.today.com/popculture/chip-joanna-gaines-respond-claims-racism-anti-lgbtq-bias-t224251">interview</a>. “The accusations that get thrown at you, like you’re a racist or you don’t like people in the LGBTQ community, that’s the stuff that really eats my lunch — because it’s so far from who we really are,” the biracial mom of five said.
The Gaineses got into hot water again for allegedly donating $1,000 to Chip’s sister, Shannon Braun, who was running for her local school board with an anti-CRT campaign.
Despite these situations, the Gaineses have remained relatively uncontroversial and appear to have both conservative and progressive fans. The latest Target scandal could be the catalyst to make a more definitive statement and finally admit which side they’re really on.

Now their conservative audience is demanding that Chip and Joanna take a side after it was revealed that Target was selling “tuck-friendly” female swimwear in their prominent Pride section. The company also faced backlash for partnering with an artist who independently sells merchandise with Satanic themes. 
Erik Carnell runs the company Abprallen. Joanna had previously agreed to write five <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/books">books</a> with HarperCollins as part of a $12.5 million deal, per <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2022/12/07/joanna-gaines-chip-sue-literary-agent-book-deal-fixer-upper-hgtv/">TMZ</a>. The arrangement was brokered by the boutique literary agency Vigliano Associates.
Now their former agent, David Vigliano, is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/lawsuit">suing</a> the couple for at least $1 million in damages for allegedly not holding up their end of the bargain. 
After writing the first two books, Vigliano claims that the Gaineses altered the original contract by reducing the number of books Joanna would write down to four. He also accused the couple of failing to pay the agreed-upon fees and earnings from the original agreement.

Vigliano said the pair also eliminated the possibility of a sixth book and tried to swap out Chip as the author of one book when Joanna was supposed to write them all.
The lawsuit states that Vigliano Associates is entitled to 7.5% of total advances, bonuses, and royalties Joanna earns from the books per the original agreement.
Meanwhile, Joanna just released the memoir “The Stories We Tell: Every Piece of Your Story Matters” with another agent. Vigliano is asserting that his company is owed a portion of those sales. 
“Joanna and Chip Gaines brand themselves as moral Christians who purportedly operate in an ethical manner &#8230; nothing could be further from the truth,” legal documents obtained by TMZ said.
The former HGTV star and creator of Magnolia Network has been busy promoting her new book, which Joanna said was &#8220;written for my six-year-old self, who walked into rooms and knew that she mattered.&#8221;
&#8220;There is something that resonates with me about going back,&#8221; the mom of five told <a href="https://www.womansday.com/life/entertainment/a41899843/joanna-gaines-interview-memoir-the-stories-we-tell/">Woman’s Day</a> about her inspiration for the memoir. 
&#8220;There is magic to going back. &#8230; How do I recapture some of that? The older I get, I want these things to matter. These grounding moments, places where I feel safe. For the longest time, I let fear lead my decision-making. Now I&#8217;m constantly rewriting these thoughts, so that I&#8217;m walking in who I am.&#8221;
&#8220;When you let go, you have the capacity to hold more of what matters,&#8221; Joanna continued. &#8220;I want to continue to evolve and surprise myself. I don&#8217;t want to be put in a box. I want to continue to grow and learn and be surprised by life.”
“The Stories We Tell” quickly became a top seller, joining Joanna’s six other books, including two cookbooks and two children&#8217;s books.

Utah-based couple Andy and Candis Meredith this week published <a href="https://www.instagram.com/andyandcandis/">numerous</a> videos and social media posts to Instagram refuting allegations related to their home renovations following news that Chip and Joanna Gaines&#8217; Magnolia Network has pulled the couple&#8217;s show &#8220;Home Work&#8221; from its lineup.
As highlighted by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chip-and-joanna-gaines-network-pulls-home-work-from-network-after-homeowners-make-accusations-about-conditions-work">The Daily Wire</a>, homeowners have accused the couple of unsafe renovation conditions and shoddy work: &#8220;At least three couples have expressed regret over working with the Merediths, citing incomplete work or unsafe conditions and budget and timeline issues, according to the Fox Business report. For example, one couple claimed &#8216;somebody fell through the floor into our basement&#8217; twice during the renovations, and the floors were left uneven, the report outlined. Another claimed their price tag increased by $15,000.&#8221;
The couple has denied the allegations, calling the narrative surrounding their work &#8220;one-sided.&#8221;
In one emotional video, Candis cries while talking about the bullying she says her children have had to endure since the allegations were made public, and their show was subsequently pulled.
&#8220;While preparing these posts, we discovered that our children are being bullied at school,&#8221; the video was captioned. &#8220;This is so extremely upsetting.&#8221;
&#8220;We have received death threats, our home is under police surveillance for our safety, and these comments and judgments of us, stating that we are liars, thieves and con artists are so extremely hurtful and based on one narrative amplified by others who were not part of any of these situations,&#8221; the post said.
The couple said they &#8220;fully admit&#8221; they &#8220;took on too much at one time&#8221; but called homeowner Aubry Bennion&#8217;s &#8220;public call for anything and everything people can share about us &#8230; not ok.&#8221; The post added that it was &#8220;inevitable&#8221; to have some &#8220;dissatisfied&#8221; clients after working with &#8221; hundreds of people,&#8221; citing four clients:
<blockquote>We fully admit that we took on too much at one time, and that this was a hard road for these 4 clients’ renovation projects. We also acknowledge that after working in an extremely difficult industry for over 10 years, working with hundreds of people, there are inevitably going to be some who are dissatisfied. Aubry’s public call for anything and everything people can share about us is not ok. We have the same phone numbers, and anyone we have worked with can contact us at any time. </blockquote>
&#8220;We realize that we have put ourselves out there for the world to make judgements and we have to accept that,&#8221; the couple continued. &#8220;What we will not accept is losing our livelihood and being put on public trial the way [Aubry Bennion] and [Teisha Hawley] have done and the others who have piled &#8230; We understand the frustrations, we really do. But these should have been resolved privately, through any means of communication, within the last two years and not in this malicious and salacious attempt to take away our means of living.&#8221;
&#8220;We support many families with this show, we have balances with contractors we are actively working on, there is so much more to this than just us,&#8221; they wrote. &#8220;By taking away all means of income, it is only making it more difficult for us to pay for anything outstanding and people are losing their jobs because of this.&#8221;
&#8220;We will protect our family and those whom we support with Home Work,&#8221; the post closed. &#8220;We stand behind our work and our principles and are not here to take anything away from anyone the way it has been done to us. However, we are asking that any and all who have contributed to this toxic cancel mindset take a moment to review both sides before passing judgment on us.&#8221;
Last weekend, Magnolia Network president Allison Page <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/entertainment/chip-joanna-gaines-magnolia-network-pulls-home-work-lineup-accusations-shoddy-work">confirmed</a> to Fox Business that “Home Work&#8221; was no longer on the network.
“Magnolia Network is aware that certain homeowners have expressed concerns about renovation projects undertaken by Candis and Andy Meredith,” Page said in a statement. “Within the last few days, we have learned additional information about the scope of these issues, and we have decided to remove ‘Home Work’ from the Magnolia Network line up pending a review of the claims that have been made.”

Chip and Joanna Gaines&#8217; network, Magnolia, has pulled a show called &#8220;Home Work&#8221; from the network following homeowners&#8217; accusations of unsafe renovation conditions and shoddy work.

&#8220;Magnolia Network is aware that certain homeowners have expressed concerns about renovation projects undertaken by Candis and Andy Meredith,&#8221; Page said in a statement. &#8220;Within the last few days, we have learned additional information about the scope of these issues, and we have decided to remove ‘Home Work’ from the Magnolia Network line up pending a review of the claims that have been made.&#8221;
At least three couples have expressed regret over working with the Merediths, citing incomplete work or unsafe conditions and budget and timeline issues, according to the FOX Business report. For example, one couple claimed &#8220;somebody fell through the floor into our basement&#8221; twice during the renovations, and the floors were left uneven, the report outlined. Another claimed their price tag increased by $15,000.
The home improvement couple have denied all the &#8220;extremely painful&#8221; allegations against them.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen stories that has (sic) been circulating, and although we cannot speak for anyone but ourselves, we can say that we have always tried to give everything we have to make anyone we work with happy,&#8221; the couple <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CYb-tnoF8GZ/">posted</a> to Instagram.
&#8220;We have always kept lines of communication open, there have always been ways for people to recover any damages, there have been purchase contracts in place, legal avenues etc, but taking this public seems to be the easiest way to harm us personally,&#8221; the Merediths continued. &#8220;Like so many, these last two years have been extremely difficult for us and we have always tried to do our best in any situation, including not making a single penny from any of these clients and paying out of pocket to try to make them happy or right wrongs.&#8221;
&#8220;We adamantly deny that we have ever stolen any money from these couples,&#8221; the post asserted, adding, &#8220;We worked with license general contractors. It is true that we are sometimes left with outstanding balances, but we always pay, even if it takes some time for us to make arrangements. To say anything otherwise is truly not ok. We have paid every amount of money we could to make things right and have continued making payments when necessary.&#8221;
The Gaines have made political news in the past, primarily for being open Christians. Notably, back in 2016, BuzzFeed and Cosmopolitan magazine broke the &#8220;shocking&#8221; story that the couple attend a Christian church that views homosexuality as a sin.

At the time, Daily Wire founder <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/thoughtfascists-buzzfeed-cosmo-attack-gaines-ben-shapiro">Ben Shapiro</a> mocked the attack: &#8220;So the headline here is actually: &#8216;OH MY GOD SOMEBODY GOES TO A CHURCH WHERE THE PASTOR ACTUALLY BELIEVES THAT HORRIBLE BIBLE THING.'&#8221;
&#8220;Now, here’s the wonderful thing about America: the Gaines family can go to a church where the pastor believes homosexual activity is a sin,&#8221; Shapiro explained. &#8220;They can even believe it. So long as they don’t mistreat anybody – and there is not one single solitary shred of evidence that they have – they’re free to do so. They can hold beliefs! Yes, even Bible believers are allowed to believe things! In fact, that was the reason the Pilgrims came to the United States!&#8221;
&#8220;[T]he idea here is that the Gaines career must be destroyed for their religious thoughtcrime,&#8221; he added. &#8220;They are not allowed to think things. They aren’t even allowed to go to a church where the pastor says things with which they might not even agree.&#8221;
More recently, the interracial couple was attacked for being &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/media-paint-chip-and-joanna-gaines-as-racists-for-donating-to-relatives-campaign-opposing-critical-race-theory">racists</a>&#8221; because they donated $1,000 to Chip’s sister’s local school board campaign, which aims in part to stop highly controversial critical race theory from being taught in schools.

Chip and Joanna Gaines say fans will never find details of their messy breakup in the gossip pages.
When <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4x-ALQfcnk">Access Hollywood</a> asked whether they have ever considered &#8220;throwing in the towel&#8221; on their marriage, the home renovation duo, who are committed Christians, said divorce isn’t something they would ever consider.
&#8220;One thing that I would say is our superpower is that Jo and I are not quitters,&#8221; Chip Gaines replied. &#8220;I mean, throwing in the towel is not something that, honestly, ever even comes to mind. And I would say that that happened pretty early in our relationship, where we just thought, that’s interesting, that divorce or leaving one another is not really an option for us.&#8221;
The pair appeared on the program to promote their new Magnolia Home Network, which premiered on Discover+ on Thursday.
The Gaines have shown their commitment to the ideal of traditional marriage in the past when woke mobs came after them for attending a church that adheres to biblical sexual ethics on marriage and gender.

Rather than apologize as many celebrities have done in similar situations, Chip Gaines declined to distance himself from the family’s church and instead issued a simple statement on the couple’s <a href="https://magnolia.com/create/blog/">blog</a>:
<blockquote>&#8220;You wanna talk about how to build bridges between people that disagree? We want to be a part of that conversation. Do you want to talk about healing and compassion and kindness and restoration? We&#8217;re in the restoration business, we can for sure make time for that &#8230;
If there is any hope for all of us to move forward, to heal and to grow — we have got to learn to engage people who are different from us with dignity and with love. Joanna and I have personal convictions. One of them is this: we care about you for the simple fact that you are a person, our neighbor on planet earth. It&#8217;s not about what color your skin is, how much money you have in the bank, your political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender, nationality or faith. That&#8217;s all fascinating, but it cannot add or take away from the reality that we&#8217;re already pulling for you. We are not about to get in the nasty business of throwing stones at each other, don&#8217;t ask us to cause we won&#8217;t play that way.&#8221;</blockquote>
He then signaled clear support for his pastor, <a href="https://twitter.com/chipgaines/status/805435081477201921?s=20">tweeting</a>, “In times of trouble&#8230;you&#8217;ll find the Gaines family at church.”
More recently, as The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/media-paint-chip-and-joanna-gaines-as-racists-for-donating-to-relatives-campaign-opposing-critical-race-theory">reported</a>, the media tried to paint the couple as racists after Chip donated $1000 to his sister’s school board campaign, with The Hill running the headline, “TV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines donate to campaign against critical race theory in schools.”
The Gaines did not respond to the obvious mischaracterization.
