Detainees who are said to be on a &#8220;hunger strike&#8221; inside ICE&#8217;s Delaney Hall detention center are actually stocking up on snacks from the commissary, including sushi, clams, sausage, and other elevated offerings, according to a store menu obtained by The Daily Wire.
Sources have said that the so-called hunger strike at the Newark, New Jersey, facility has involved detainees opting not to eat the meals provided to them, while they rush to the commissary to load up on snacks. The store&#8217;s stock includes the typical vending machine snacks, such as Cheetos, Honey Buns, and ramen, while also offering &#8220;fresh catch tuna,&#8221; &#8220;yellow fin tuna steak,&#8221; &#8220;smoked clams,&#8221; a filet of mackerel, summer pork sausage, and teriyaki chicken noodles, according to the menu.
Democratic lawmakers, like Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), have cited complaints that there are worms in the food and poor conditions inside the facility as the reason for the alleged hunger strike.
Former ICE New York Field Office Deputy Director Scott Mechkowski dismissed the claims as a complete hoax and said that activist groups are helping detainees pay for their commissary snacks.

&#8220;Nothing says &#8216;hunger strike&#8217; like clearing out the snack aisle. The only thing going hungry around here is the story they&#8217;re trying to sell you,&#8221; he added.
Commissary <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-snack-sales-inside-delaney-hall-more-than-double-amid-so-called-hunger-strike">sales</a> at Delaney Hall surged 161%, jumping from $11,498 on May 26 to $30,013 on June 1, according to internal data obtained by The Daily Wire. During that time, the detainee population fell from 724 to 621.
White House border czar Tom Homan recently revealed that he made a surprise visit to the facility and ate the same food being served to detainees.
“I even made a surprise visit this weekend and walked into the cafeteria and ate the same meal that the detainees around me were eating, and I made sure my tray equaled their tray. I had spaghetti and meat sauce, I had green beans, I had bread and rolls, I had drinks, I had dessert. The food was good, it’s all a false premise. There was never a hunger strike,” Homan said.
“They may not be eating in the cafeteria, but what I found out they’re ordering food from the commissary and eating it in their cells,” he added.
For days, protesters have clashed with authorities outside the facility, and dozens have been arrested. New Jersey Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill waited to send in the state police until nearly a week into the melee.

A Democrat will almost certainly be the next congressman from New York’s 12th Congressional District, a solidly blue seat in Manhattan. The real race is the Democratic primary, which, a year before the election, is already a circus.
Longtime Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler announced in September that he would not be seeking re-election, opening up the seat he has held since 1992, which he won with over 80% of the vote in the last two elections.
Among those Democrats vying to replace Nadler are state Reps. Alex Bores and Micah Lasher, New York City Councilman Erik Bottcher, attorney Laura Dunn, nonprofit founder Liam Elkind, and attorney Jami Floyd. Earlier this month, Jack Schlossberg — social media influencer, “Vogue” political correspondent, and grandson of President John F. Kennedy — entered the already crowded fray with his characteristic flair.
“WE NEED YOUR HELP !!! Please consider donating so we can go to Washington and FIX IT,” Schlossberg wrote on X this week. “WE ARE A MOVEMENT powered by people who know WE DESERVE BETTER.”
Schlossberg’s bizarre social media posts include a swipe at his cousin, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., in which he <a href="https://freebeacon.com/democrats/jack-schlossberg-kennedy-grandson-running-for-congress-tweeted-about-drinking-jew-blood-ashkenazi-not-sephardic-and-semen-in-offensive-dig-at-rfk-jr/">references</a> drinking semen and “jew blood.” He also filmed himself performing a Nazi salute, apparently an effort to mock Elon Musk. Schlossberg has since <a href="https://freebeacon.com/democrats/kennedy-heir-and-house-candidate-jack-schlossberg-performed-nazi-salute-in-since-deleted-swipe-at-elon-musk/">deleted</a> both tweets.
Schlossberg’s <a href="https://jackfornewyork.com/12-for-12/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> boasts his full name — John Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg — and lists his “12 promises to the people of New York’s 12th District,” which include “service,” “courage,” and “patriotism,” but no real policy proposals.
Gun control activist Cameron Kasky, who is also weighing a bid for the seat, warned that “If you are a Democrat running in 2026 and do not fully support an arms embargo to the State of Israel amidst their ongoing genocide in Gaza despite Trump’s fake ‘ceasefire,&#8217; Stop wasting everybody’s time. It’s over. The people have spoken. Moral clarity is winning.”
The race to represent Midtown Manhattan comes in the shadow of the election of Democrat Zohran Mamdani as New York City mayor earlier this month.
Mamdani, who has proposed multiple socialist policies, could end up becoming a key factor in the race, as some in the running have already advocated for his candidacy or have critiqued his policies.
“Mamdani is right: New Yorkers are being squeezed out of the city they love,” Floyd noted in a recent Substack post, noting that she did not vote for him. “But his rent-freeze proposal for one million stabilized apartments would backfire. It would choke investment, reduce maintenance, and shrink the housing supply. The truth is that there can be no affordable housing without those who build and maintain it.”
Others, like Elkind, have floated other controversial proposals, such as abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“It’s time to restore our commitment to liberty and justice. It’s time to defend the rule of law from those who abuse it in its name. It’s time to abolish ICE,” Elkind said in an October 22 statement.
The primary election is on June 23, 2026.

Trump’s takedown wasn’t just personal — it was historic. The feud between Trump and Nadler stretches back to the 1980s, when Trump was <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/ive-been-battling-nadler-for-years-feud-between-trump-democrat-rooted-in-decades-old-new-york-real-estate-project/2019/04/08/1c848f7e-57af-11e9-a047-748657a0a9d1_story.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com">building skyscrapers</a> in Manhattan and Nadler was a New York State Assemblyman fighting to kill development. Nadler made it his mission to obstruct Trump’s plans to transform Manhattan’s West Side with ambitious towers over the rail yards. Despite Nadler’s interference, Trump still got the deal done — but the bad blood never left.
Nadler viewed Trump as a reckless showman who relied on public money and shady financing. He tried — and failed — to derail Trump’s projects. And Trump never forgot it.
The political rivalry turned national when Trump won the presidency in 2016 and Nadler climbed the ranks of Democratic leadership. By 2019, Nadler—then chair of the House Judiciary Committee — had positioned himself at the center of Trump’s first impeachment. It was vintage Nadler: high drama, zero results.
During the Senate trial, Nadler <a href="https://www.congress.gov/congressional-record/volume-166/issue-14/senate-section/article/S487-7?utm_source=chatgpt.com">accused</a> Trump of conduct that “puts even President Nixon to shame,” claiming the president had abused his power and “cheated” in the 2020 election by pressuring Ukraine. But like much of Nadler’s anti-Trump crusade, it ended in failure. Trump was acquitted — twice.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), typically a swing vote, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/impeachment-backfire-key-gop-senator-offended-by-nadler-charge-as-trial-tests-patience-and-stamina?utm_source=chatgpt.com">said</a> she was “offended” by Nadler’s hyperbolic rhetoric, which included accusing GOP senators of enabling a “White House cover-up.”
Outside of impeachment, Nadler became infamous for pretending to know nothing about the nationwide surge in violence against ICE agents. In July 2025, when asked by a Fox News correspondent about attacks on ICE officers, Nadler <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5410275-homan-slams-buffoon-nadler-over-comments-on-ice-agent-attacks/">replied</a>: “What attacks on ICE agents?”
Former ICE Director Tom Homan fired back, saying, “This buffoon knows exactly what attacks—his party is the one encouraging them.” Homan cited an 830% increase in assaults and directly blamed Democrats for the dangerous anti-law enforcement rhetoric.
Nadler also sparked outrage in 2024 when he denied that biological males were competing in women’s sports. During a House hearing, Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY) cited examples of women injured in competition, including swimmer Riley Gaines. Nadler objected, calling the claims “mistruths” and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jerry-nadler-blasted-for-claiming-men-dont-compete-in-womens-sports?utm_source=chatgpt.com">flatly stating</a>, “Men do not compete in women’s sports.” His denial of reality drew immediate backlash from conservatives and female athletes alike.
For years, Nadler was a darling of the far Left — championing radical abortion policies, pushing LGBTQ+ legislation, and smearing political opponents as threats to democracy. But at 78, following President Joe Biden’s 2024 collapse and with the Democrats in disarray, Nadler finally bowed out. He claimed the party needed “generational change” and <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/sep/02/democratic-congressman-jerry-nadler-retires?utm_source=chatgpt.com">warned ominously</a> about “incipient fascism” — a typical dog whistle aimed at Trump supporters.

During a private call on Sunday with other Democratic lawmakers, Nadler reportedly joined three colleagues in calling on Biden to step out of the race. According to <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/07/jerry-nadler-adam-smith-congress-biden-00166733" target="_blank" rel="noopener">POLITICO</a>, which cited two people familiar with the private call, Nadler, along with Reps. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Mark Takano (D-Calif.), and Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) said they wanted Biden to end his campaign, while other Democrats expressed concerns about Biden&#8217;s chances against Trump.

Jerry Nadler (D-NY) faced backlash this week after arguing during a congressional hearing that the U.S. needs &#8220;many <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/illegal-immigration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">illegal immigrants</a>,&#8221; which comes as the U.S. experiences a historic flood of illegal aliens into the country because of President Joe Biden&#8217;s policies.
Nadler made the remarks during a House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement hearing on Thursday about the &#8220;Impact of Illegal Immigration on Social Services.&#8221;

Shortly after the 2018 midterms, Jerry Nadler — who was about to become the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee — boarded an Acela train from New York to Washington. When he got to his seat, he began loudly speaking on the phone with someone who remains unknown to this day. Unfortunately for Nadler, the editor-in-chief of the conservative website The Federalist, Mollie Hemingway, was seated nearby, jotting down notes about the whole conversation.
Hemingway <a href="https://thefederalist.com/2018/11/07/incoming-democrat-chairman-dems-will-go-all-in-on-russia-impeach-kavanaugh-for-perjury/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">overheard</a> Nadler outline, in no uncertain terms, Democrats&#8217; plans for going, &#8220;all-in&#8221; on investigating and ultimately impeaching Donald Trump. It was much more important for Democrats to impeach Donald Trump than Brett Kavanaugh, Nadler said, because going after Kavanaugh might remind voters of Joe Biden&#8217;s disastrous handling of Anita Hill&#8217;s sexual harassment allegations against Clarence Thomas. That could harm Joe Biden&#8217;s chances of becoming president. So, Nadler said, the safe play was to impeach Donald Trump for colluding with Russia, which is an accusation that Jerry Nadler has never had any evidence to support. If Democrats went with that strategy, Nadler said on the phone, it would clear the way for a Joe Biden presidency.
In one sense, what Mollie Hemingway overheard wasn&#8217;t surprising. More than a year earlier, just minutes after Donald Trump was inaugurated, The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/2017/live-updates/politics/live-coverage-of-trumps-inauguration/the-campaign-to-impeach-president-trump-has-begun/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a>, &#8220;The campaign to impeach President Trump has begun.&#8221; But in retrospect, Jerry Nadler&#8217;s remarks on that train back in 2018 didn&#8217;t just foreshadow Donald Trump&#8217;s two impeachments, or the presidency of Joe Biden. They also established the blueprint for how Leftists would treat all political investigations moving forward. They have no interest in the evidence. They don&#8217;t care about the law. Their goal, instead, is to use the force of the legal system to punish their enemies.
This was a shift that was much bigger than Jerry Nadler. The same year that Nadler made those remarks on the Acela, Letitia James was campaigning to become New York&#8217;s attorney general. And she said pretty much the same thing. She <a href="https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/politics/2018/12/24/how-letitia-james-says-she-plans-to-investigate-president-donald-trump-once-new-york-attorney-general" target="_blank" rel="noopener">promised</a> to find some way to take Donald Trump to court, however implausible. Aand she followed through.

One of the many problems with this strategy is that it&#8217;s short-sighted. Democrats failed to ensure they&#8217;d hold onto political power forever. That&#8217;s certainly their goal. It&#8217;s the entire justification for their immigration policy. But they haven&#8217;t achieved it yet. So right now, Republicans are in control of the House of Representatives. And yesterday, they announced their own impeachment inquiry. They&#8217;re looking primarily at whether Joe Biden sold favors to overseas interests, particularly in Ukraine and China. 
In a moment, I&#8217;ll go into some of the evidence that justifies this inquiry. But really, we don&#8217;t have to go into all of it. Once Jerry Nadler adopted the Stalinist standard for impeachment — basically, &#8220;show me a man and I&#8217;ll show you the crime&#8221; — then evidence became moot. Impeachment is all about raw political power now. It&#8217;s not about evidence. And it&#8217;s certainly not about fairness, or the rule of law.
The White House and the Biden family know all of this. That&#8217;s why they&#8217;re not even pretending to defend themselves. Hunter Biden went in front of the cameras and announced he&#8217;s not going to comply with a congressional subpoena he was served. Watch:

Hunter Biden received a lawful subpoena for closed-door testimony. This is the same kind of subpoena Donald Trump Jr. and many other Trump aides were forced to comply with, for hours on end. But he just doesn&#8217;t want to do it, so he refuses.
And his justification for refusing is completely absurd. There&#8217;s no legal basis for it, and Hunter Biden isn&#8217;t pretending there is one. Instead, he&#8217;s saying he wants to testify in front of the news media, instead of a closed-door session. It&#8217;s just his preference, and he seems to think that his preference is somehow binding on Congress.
It was just a couple of years ago that former Trump adviser Steve Bannon <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/steve-bannon-subpoena-january-6-select-committee/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">defied</a> a congressional subpoena. Unlike Hunter Biden, he had a reason for doing so. He argued it was unlawful for Congress to compel him to testify about his work in the White House, citing executive privilege. 
Now, whatever you make of that defense, it&#8217;s clearly rooted in the law. It&#8217;s <a href="https://rollcall.com/2023/11/09/appeals-court-skeptical-of-bannon-push-to-overturn-contempt-of-congress-convictions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">working</a> its way through the federal appellate process as we speak. What happened to Steve Bannon because he asserted that defense? He was sentenced to four months in prison:

Is that going to happen to Hunter Biden? As of now, congressional Republicans are threatening to hold him in contempt of Congress, which they obviously should. But then there&#8217;s the question of whether Joe Biden&#8217;s DOJ will pursue criminal charges. Will they throw Hunter Biden in prison for this? Will they demand he testify, under oath, about his father&#8217;s involvement in his business?
That&#8217;s an open question. Right now, the DOJ is pursuing charges against Hunter Biden about his fraudulent gun form, and his tax evasion. But those charges don&#8217;t directly relate to the main issue in this impeachment inquiry, which is where Hunter Biden got all of his money from — and more importantly, Joe Biden&#8217;s involvement in procuring that money.
Yesterday a reporter at Fox asked the White House press secretary about all of this. She proceeded to make it clear that Joe Biden knew that Hunter would defy the congressional subpoena. Beyond that, she just made light of the whole situation. Watch:

This kind of question should be extremely easy to answer. If you&#8217;re asked whether the president told his son to defy a congressional subpoena, you should be able to respond and explain yourself. Instead, the White House press secretary cracks a joke, and starts talking about how much Joe Biden loves his son.
What this means, almost certainly, is that Joe Biden did advise his son to defy the congressional subpoena, without any legal basis whatsoever. Under the standards Democrats established with Steve Bannon and several other Trump aides, that&#8217;s a crime. 
And there&#8217;s an obvious motive for why Joe Biden would want his son to commit this crime. Hunter Biden himself made that motive very clear during his remarks to reporters yesterday. Watch:

Did you catch the qualifier there? Hunter wants you to know that his father was not &#8220;financially involved&#8221; in his business dealings with corrupt oligarchs in Ukraine and China. So this is not a denial that Joe Biden was involved in Hunter Biden&#8217;s business dealings. Now it&#8217;s a denial that Joe Biden was &#8220;financially&#8221; involved.
This is a very different claim from the one Joe Biden has been making for years. Watch:

The reason for this change is the Biden family knows they can&#8217;t deny a direct link between Joe Biden and Hunter Biden&#8217;s influence peddling operation. Devon Archer, one of Hunter Biden&#8217;s business associates, has already <a href="https://x.com/SpeakerJohnson/status/1734928534156595442?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">testified</a> in front of the House of Representatives, saying that Joe Biden spoke with Hunter Biden&#8217;s business partners roughly 20 times. Those conversations, according to Archer, took place while Joe Biden was the sitting vice president of the United States.  
The Wall Street Journal also reported that Archer testified that, &#8220;Burisma would have gone out of business if it didn&#8217;t have the [Biden] brand attached to it.&#8221; As you will recall, Burisma is the Ukraine oil company that paid Hunter Biden tens of thousands of dollars a month for a no-show job, despite Hunter Biden having no oil expertise whatsoever. Burisma was being investigated by Ukraine&#8217;s attorney general, up until Joe Biden threatened to withhold money to Ukraine&#8217;s government until they fired him.
Then there&#8217;s the fact that Joe Biden used a fake name to email with Hunter&#8217;s business partners. There&#8217;s also the many public comments of Tony Bobulinski, the Hunter Biden business partner who has repeatedly said that Joe Biden personally profited from Hunter Biden&#8217;s influence peddling. Bobulinski — who had no reason to lie whatsoever — told Tucker Carlson that Joe Biden was the &#8220;big guy&#8221; referenced repeatedly in emails on Hunter Biden&#8217;s laptop. The Big Guy, according to the emails, was slated to receive 10% of the profits from one business venture in China.
It&#8217;s important to recount all of this because even now, Democrats are claiming that there are no witnesses to support the idea that Joe Biden could possibly be corrupt. Here&#8217;s AOC for example:

This is how the Left plans to respond to the congressional investigation into Joe Biden. They&#8217;ll deny reality. They&#8217;ll pretend that witnesses don&#8217;t exist, even when those witnesses have appeared before Congress and on primetime television. They&#8217;ll make fun of you, as Karine Jean-Pierre did yesterday.
All of this was foreseeable when Jerry Nadler, Leticia James, and other top Democrats decided to use the legal system and the impeachment process to punish their political opponents. It was inevitable that soon enough, they&#8217;d be forced to admit they can&#8217;t possibly live up to their own nonexistent standards. Just five years after Jerry Nadler&#8217;s conversation on that Acela, that moment is here now.
Conservatives can either take advantage of it, or they can do what they usually do. They can make a big show for the cameras and completely fail to follow through. It&#8217;s clear that Karine Jean-Pierre and Hunter Biden think that will happen. They don&#8217;t believe their political enemies are anywhere near as ruthless and cynical as they are. For once, it&#8217;s time for conservatives to prove them wrong.

&#8220;Two-year-olds should have been required to wear masks. Becerra had been asked on Tuesday if &#8220;forcing 2-year-olds to wear masks save lives” by Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA). 
“Making sure people were masked when it was appropriate was essential to make sure that we were able to get out of this pandemic,&#8221; Becerra responded.

Representative <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jerry-nadler" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jerry Nadler</a> (D-NY) sure seems carefree about World War III potentially starting over Ukraine.
On Thursday, a reporter caught up with the septuagenarian, who promptly spilled the beans that he would not care whatsoever if Ukraine invaded Russia, let alone if they did so with U.S.-supplied weapons.
&#8220;Are you concerned that they will enter into Russian territory?&#8221; The Epoch Times’ Liam Cosgrove said of Ukraine.
&#8220;I&#8217;m not concerned. I wouldn&#8217;t care if they did,&#8221; Nadler said.
After the reporter explained that Russia could view this as a U.S.-backed invasion of Russia, the congressman was dismissive and even smirked about the intensification of the war.
Nadler also refused to say if he would condemn Ukraine if they used American-made F-16s to attack Russia.

Last week, it was <a href="https://apnews.com/article/ukraine-russia-war-f16-biden-a281e3cd1474b2e6f453946075824565" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that Biden backed sending American F-16s to Russia. It is uncertain whether the U.S. will send its own F-16s or whether it will simply allow European countries to export American F-16s to Ukraine. This decision came after months of the Biden administration denying that the U.S. would ever do so. Biden was reportedly pressured into sending the jets by the Pentagon and European allies. He eventually relented.

In response, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/ukraines-army-will-see-long-term-significance-f-16s-ex-ambassador-1801972#:~:text=%22We%20see%20that%20the%20Western,involves%20enormous%20risks%20for%20themselves." target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, “We see that the Western countries are still adhering to the escalation scenario.&#8221;
Grushko intimated that the West could suffer even more consequences if that happened.

Grushko&#8217;s assessment isn&#8217;t simply Russian propaganda.
The Biden administration has long felt that providing the planes could prolong the war and increase its volatility.
Per <a href="https://apnews.com/article/ukraine-russia-war-f16-biden-a281e3cd1474b2e6f453946075824565" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Associated Press</a>, &#8220;…with this decision, the Biden administration has made a sharp reversal, after refusing to approve any transfer of the aircraft or conduct training for more than a year due to worries that it could escalate tensions with Russia. U.S. officials also have argued against the F-16 by saying that learning to fly and logistically support such an advanced aircraft would be difficult and take months.&#8221;
What does escalation look like? Well, at the very least it means more dead Ukrainians and Russians. The death toll in the war is already in the hundreds-of-thousands. At worst, it means that NATO is dragged into the war — which means that the U.S. would be also.
You wouldn&#8217;t think that is a laughing matter for a member of Congress. Nadler is pretty nonchalant about it all — even absolving himself of any responsibility. It is a pretty serious issue that requires statesmanship, but we&#8217;re not led by serious men at this time. We are being sleepwalked by fools like Nadler into war with nuclear power.

Congressman <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/topic/jerry-nadler/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jerry Nadler</a> (D-NY) reportedly fought with fellow Democratic leaders  — including House Speaker <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/topic/nancy-pelosi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nancy Pelosi</a> (D-CA) and Impeachment Manager <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/adam-schiff/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Adam Schiff</a> (D-CA) — over the first impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump.
According to a new book from Politico Playbook&#8217;s Rachael Bade and The Washington Post&#8217;s Karoun Demirjian — &#8220;Unchecked: The Untold Story Behind Congress’s Botched Impeachments of Donald Trump&#8221; — <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/nadler-wins-vicious-battle-of-far-left-nyc-house-incumbents-prompted-by-botched-redistricting/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nadler</a> worried that the proceedings were &#8220;unconstitutional&#8221; and <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/politics/jerry-nadler-clashed-with-pelosi-dems-over-trump-impeachment-deemed-it-unconstitutional-per-report/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voiced concern</a> over not allowing Trump a vigorous defense.
Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/nadler-feuded-schiff-pelosi-unconstitutional-impeachment-donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">detailed excerpts</a> of the book, set to be released on October 18, noting that Nadler specifically took issue with Schiff&#8217;s plan to proceed with impeachment regarding Trump&#8217;s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — without ensuring the former president had due process.
&#8220;It’s unfair, and it’s unprecedented, and it’s unconstitutional,&#8221; Nadler reportedly said, complaining that his Judiciary Committee would not have the chance to cross-examine the witnesses as they had in the past.
&#8220;I don’t appreciate your tone. I worry you’re putting us in a box for our investigation,&#8221; was Schiff&#8217;s alleged response to Nadler&#8217;s objections.
Pelosi reportedly all-but sidelined Nadler then, choosing not to give the Judiciary Committee the same power it had enjoyed during previous impeachments.
&#8220;She didn’t want the Judiciary panel to interview witnesses at all. Pelosi simply didn’t trust the panel — which was stacked with liberal crusaders and hotheaded conservatives — to handle the rollout of the complex Ukraine narrative with the careful, compelling treatment it required,&#8221; the authors wrote. &#8220;She couldn’t afford another Nadler screwup. The Judiciary chairman could focus on the legal business of crafting the articles of impeachment and have academics testify, she allowed. But that was it.&#8221;
Nadler continued to push back, however, reportedly warning Schiff and Pelosi that they would be vulnerable to complaints about the process if they refused to allow Trump to face his accusers or mount a defense.
&#8220;If we’re going to impeach, we need to show the country that we gave the president ample opportunity to defend himself,&#8221; he said — but Pelosi and Schiff were reportedly concerned that Trump&#8217;s attorneys might say something that could damage President Joe Biden ahead of the 2020 presidential election.
The alleged response from Schiff&#8217;s team was unequivocal: &#8220;F*** Donald Trump.&#8221;
Nadler tried once more to sway the two, saying that he &#8220;resented&#8221; being told how to run his own committee and allegedly asking, &#8220;They’re going to argue we don’t have due process for Trump. Why make that argument real?&#8221;
&#8220;I don’t really care about your resentment. Neither the Speaker nor I agree,&#8221; Schiff reportedly shot back.
