Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), 78, has declared that he will not seek reelection next year — and that he plans to step aside in an effort to allow for younger Democrats to step into leadership positions.
As reported on Monday by The New York Times, Nadler said that watching former President Joe Biden over the last several years had moved him to consider making way for the next generation of leaders.
“Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party, and I think I want to respect that,” Nadler explained, saying that he hoped the next person to fill his seat “can maybe do better, can maybe help us more.”
With 34 years in Congress, Nadler is both the longest-serving New Yorker and the longest-serving Jewish member of the U.S. House — and he claimed that he was a bit uncertain about bowing out at first because he believed he still needed to fight against President Donald Trump — but the writing may have been on the wall long before Nadler was willing to read it.

The New York Rep. recently lost his leadership position in the House Judiciary Committee at the beginning of the current Congress when the party shifted its focus toward younger leaders — and he was expected to face a primary in his home district, likely from a number of candidates who are younger and more progressive than he is.
Nadler was involved in both Trump impeachment attempts &#8212; in 2019 and 2021 &#8212; <a href="https://time.com/5743613/jerry-nadler-trump-impeachment-probe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">helping to lead</a> the former.
The news of Nadler’s retirement comes in the wake of a new congressional map in Texas that may net Republicans as many as five additional seats — and as several other states move to change their maps as well, either in retaliation to or in an effort to supplement Texas’ actions.
Nadler’s exit will not likely change the balance in Congress, however, since his district covers a large swath of Manhattan and is considered to be a safely blue district.

The father of a young Jewish man who was savagely beaten in broad daylight in Times Square ripped into two New York Democrat leaders, Senator Chuck Schumer and Rep. Jerrold Nadler, for not responding when he reached out after the attack.
Barry Borgen, whose son Joey was wearing a yarmulke when he was allegedly beaten up by Waseem Awawdeh, Mahmoud Musa, Faisal Elezzi, and Mohammed Othman, addressed Nadler when he spoke on Monday at the House Judiciary Committee’s hearing regarding victims of violent crime in Manhattan.
“Mr. Nadler, you’re a Jewish New Yorker,” Borgen stated. “I called your office numerous times. I called Mr. Schumer’s office, another Jewish New Yorker, numerous times. No one called us back.”
“You’re a Jewish New Yorker,” he continued. “You have Jewish roots here. Behavior like this enables DA [Alvin] Bragg to just do whatever he wants to do. If you guys would have come out with a statement from Washington and said that we condemn the beating of Mr. Borgen’s son, we condemn this act, maybe Mr. Bragg would have taken this case a little more seriously.&#8221;
“And I call you out on it,” he said. “Most of my friends are so disheartened with you and Mr. Schumer you don’t understand. We wouldn’t vote for Mr. Schumer again &#8230; And if I lived in Manhattan I wouldn’t vote for you either. “

Fox News political analyst Gianno Caldwell pressed Republicans and Democrats in Washington, D.C., this week on the matter of rising crime rates across the country.
Caldwell received responses from various Republicans about solutions to the problems, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY).
However, when he approached Democrats on the crime situation, many of them ran.
During his interviews, Caldwell approached Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) who refused to talk because he claimed that he was &#8220;in a rush right now.&#8221;
&#8220;We just want to talk about the crisis that is impacting our country with crime across the nation,&#8221; Caldwell said as Nadler tried to avoid being on camera while waiting for the elevator.
&#8220;I can&#8217;t do it now,&#8221; Nadler claimed.
&#8220;Congressman Nadler, can we set up a meeting with your office and have a discussion?&#8221; Caldwell asked.

Caldwell confronted Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) on the matter.
&#8220;Any reaction to the rise in violent crime across the country which is impacting students?&#8221; Caldwell asked the congresswoman at an event where she talked about the far-Left push to cancel student debt.
&#8220;I mean our work on student cancellation is a direct response to what I would consider to be policy violence,&#8221; she claimed.
A short time later, Caldwell caught up with Pressley while she walking and he pressed her on the answer that she gave.
&#8220;You mentioned policy violence, I just wanted to follow up on that,&#8221; he said.
A staffer for Pressley interjected, saying, &#8220;She got your question.&#8221;
When Caldwell continued to press on whether Pressley still believed in defending the police, her staff just said that he should email them about the subject.

Omar did not responded.

Tlaib&#8217;s remarks were so outrageous that many leftist Democrats and activists, like ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt, condemned Tlaib for her remarks.

The battle came about when lawmakers in New York’s Democrat-led state legislature screwed up attempts to gerrymander House districts and mashed key parts of Nadler’s old district with Maloney’s. It became an all-out war between Nadler, the portly chariman of the House Judiciary Committee, and Maloney, who chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.

“I think Carolyn and I have worked on a lot of things together but I think I have a more principled, progressive record,” Nadler told reporters Tuesday.
“She voted for war in Iraq, I voted against it,” he said. “She voted for the Patriot Act, I voted against it. She voted against the Iran deal, I voted for the Iran deal.”

The race became especially bitter after Nadler boasted in a magazine interview about bringing mass transit pork back to Manhattan and Maloney called him a liar.

“He was not at the groundbreaking, he was not at the ribbon-cutting, he was not at any of the meetings I had with the MTA,” she said of Nadler’s role in a key subway project. “We had hearings on it in the city, and he never came to any of them. He’s lying.”

Just last weekend, Maloney quoted a <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/08/19/some-catty-notes-on-nys-dem-house-primaries/">New York Post editorial </a>that described Nadler as “this close to senile” after he mixed up presidents Trump and Bush in a debate while bragging about getting Trump impeached twice.

Nadler Wins Vicious Battle Of Far-Left NYC House Incumbents Prompted By Botched Redistricting

On Friday, the House of Representatives voted to decriminalize cannabis and take marijuana off of the federal government’s list of controlled substances. 
The <a href="https://judiciary.house.gov/uploadedfiles/more_act_2021.pdf">Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act</a> passed the lower chamber with a 220-204 vote, gaining some Republican votes. It is reportedly unlikely to get enough support to make it past the Senate — a threshold of 60 votes — but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) supports the legislation.
The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/01/us/politics/marijuana-legalization.html">reported</a> that the bill would &#8220;remove marijuana from the federal government’s list of controlled substances, impose an 8 percent tax on cannabis products, allow some convictions on cannabis charges to be expunged and press for sentencing reviews at the federal and state levels.&#8221;
Regarding small business loans, the bill stated that the administrator of the Small Business Administration &#8220;shall establish and carry out a program, to be known as the ‘Cannabis Restorative Opportunity Program’, to provide loans and technical assistance&#8230;to assist small business concerns owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals that operate in eligible States or localities.&#8221;
It also stated that the administrator will create and operate a grant program called the &#8220;&#8216;Equitable Licensing Grant Program,&#8217; to provide any eligible State or locality funds to develop and implement equitable cannabis licensing programs that minimize barriers to cannabis licensing and employment for individuals adversely impacted by the War on Drugs&#8230;&#8221;
The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/04/01/house-passes-bill-decriminalizing-marijuana-senate-fortunes-unclear/">reported</a> that the Act would allow for legal cannabis sales to be regulated and taxed. &#8220;It also would provide for the expungement of federal marijuana convictions dating to 1971 and bars the denial of federal public benefits or security clearances on the basis of marijuana offenses,&#8221; the outlet noted.
Republicans who voted for the bill were Representatives Matt Gaetz (FL), Brian Mast (FL), and Tom McClintock (CA). However, other Republicans have supported a similar bill by Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC).
“I’m respecting the process that the Democrats want to go through,” Mace said, per The Times. She added, “You can save the federal government $600 million over five years, and it saves lives. It’s an important issue. People care about it; the vast majority of Americans care about it.”
She voted against the Democratic measure, reportedly stating before she did so, “I hope that I can be forgiven for voting against it. Because I want to continue. I want to work on this issue, but we have to work on it together.”
Democrats are framing the legislation as one that promotes “racial justice.” 
On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA) <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/house-vote-bill-legalize-marijuana-rcna22527">said</a>, &#8220;This landmark legislation is one of the most important criminal justice reform bills in recent history.”
“Make no mistake: Yes, it is a racial justice bill,” Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/04/01/house-passes-bill-decriminalizing-marijuana-senate-fortunes-unclear/">said</a>. “According to the ACLU, Black Americans are nearly four times more likely to be arrested for cannabis and related crimes than White Americans, despite equal rates of use. These arrests can have a detrimental impact on a person’s quality of life and can lead to difficulty finding employment, securing housing and accessing other benefits.”
The leading sponsor of the bill, Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), said it “would set a new path forward and would begin to correct some of the injustices of the last 50 years.” 
“Whatever one’s views are on the use of marijuana for recreational or medicinal use, the policy of arrests, prosecution, and incarceration at the federal level has proven both unwise and unjust,” he said.
On Friday, House Republicans reportedly debated the legislation, saying it would result in more kids being exposed to the substance, and noted how it didn’t address mental health problems in adults who use it. The point was also made how the country has deeper issues that need to be fixed. 
“The left will not let the Democrats do what needs to be done with the inflation problem, the energy problem, the illegal immigration problem on the southern border,” Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) said. “So what do they do? They legalize drugs. Wow.”
He <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/04/01/house-passes-bill-decriminalizing-marijuana-senate-fortunes-unclear/">added</a>, “This is wrong and everybody knows it. … Let’s focus on the things that matter.”
Many states have moved to change their laws regarding marijuana, with the bill noting that:

It added that “[a] total of 47 States have reformed their laws pertaining to cannabis despite the Schedule I status of marijuana and its Federal criminalization.”

On Wednesday, Nadler refused to answer a question from Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) as to whether he planned to introduce legislation to expand the Supreme Court.
Jordan stated, “Just a question on an issue that concerns the Committee: It’s being reported by the DC Bureau chief of The Intercept, the gentleman, Ryan Grim — I understand that it is not only wise to believe what is said on Twitter — but he is reporting that the Democrats will be introducing legislation to expand the Supreme Court from 9 members to 13 members and that you and two of our members on this committee will be sponsoring that legislation, is that accurate?”
“That is not the subject of the markup,” Nadler deflected.
Jordan fired back, “Extending the Supreme Court, a report that the chairman is going to be sponsoring legislation is not something to be talked about on the House Judiciary Committee? I waited until the bill was over to ask the Chairman a question, if you don’t think it’s important about Democrats trying to extend the size of the Supreme Court — I think that’s a pretty important issue.”

Nadler’s partisanship has been in evidence for decades. In March 2019, appearing on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show, Nadler said of the investigation of former President Trump, &#8220;Our job is to protect the rule of law in this country.”
In 1998, Nadler protected former President Bill Clinton after he was found lying regarding his affair with Monica Lewinsky. Nadler stated that the attempt to impeach Clinton was “clearly a partisan railroad job.” He <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/stories/excerpts121898.htm">asserted</a>:
<blockquote>Perjury is a serious crime and if provable should be prosecuted in a court of law. But it may or may not involve the president&#8217;s duties and performance in office. Perjury on a private matter, perjury regarding sex, is not a great and dangerous offense against the nation. It is not an abuse of uniquely presidential power. It does not threaten our form of government. It is not an impeachable offense.
The effect of impeachment is to overturn the popular will of the voters. We must not overturn an election and remove a president from office except to defend our system of government or our constitutional liberties against a dire threat. And we must not do so without an overwhelming consensus of the American people. There must never be a narrowly voted impeachment, when impeachment is supported by one of our major political parties and opposed by the other. Such an impeachment will produce divisiveness and bitterness in our politics for years to come and will call into question the very legitimacy of our political institutions.

In June 2019, Nadler <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-hater-nadler-targets-mueller-we-will-have-hank-berrien/">ignored</a> Special Counsel Robert Mueller&#8217;s protestations that he had no interest in testifying before Congress, instead threatening to summon Mueller before Congress anyway, saying, “We will have Mr. Mueller’s testimony.”
In a radio interview with WNYC, Nadler <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/446375-key-house-panel-faces-pivotal-week-on-trump">stated</a>, “We will have Mr. Mueller’s testimony. I think it&#8217;s very important that he testify before the American people, even if he doesn&#8217;t say anything beyond what he said there. The attorney general and the president and others are lying all the time about what was in the report and it&#8217;s very important that he, to the TV audience and to the American people &#8230; answer questions about it, even if there is no new information. &#8230; Most people are not going to read the 448-page report.”
In June 2020, Nadler <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nadler-calls-antifa-imaginary-former-antifa-member-blasts-only-thing-imaginary-is-nadlers-sense-of-justice/">slammed GOP members</a> of the House, stating, &#8220;They couldn&#8217;t utter the phrase &#8216;black lives matter&#8217; and could barely [broach] the subject of police reform. Instead, their amendments, I’ve given you about half of them, just listed here, were arrant nonsense, off-topic, dealing with imaginary things like Antifa and completely negating the entire purpose of the bill.&#8221;
Jim Jordan, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, infuriated, responded to Nadler, &#8220;They&#8217;re not imaginary, they&#8217;re real &#8230; To have the chair of the Judiciary Committee, on the House floor, say &#8230; these words &#8230; &#8216;imaginary things like Antifa.&#8217; They are far from imaginary. And there are people in every major city in this country who know that and yet the chair of the Judiciary Committee just made that statement. That is scary.&#8221;

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL) on Thursday requested the Judiciary Committee recite the Pledge of Allegiance together to kick off each hearing, suggesting the move would help provide some unity within Congress and pride during these divisive times.
Democratic House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler (NY) dismissed the request as &#8220;unnecessary,&#8221; telling Gaetz that lawmakers already say the pledge once a day.
&#8220;I understand and appreciate the significance and importance of the work that we do, and I just think it would be nice, if in the spirit of national unity and national pride, which I know we all aspire to do to a greater extent, that the beginning of each meeting, the chair, or one of the designees of the chair, would have the opportunity to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance,&#8221; Gaetz requested.
&#8220;We&#8217;re all aware that in these times it&#8217;s important for the country to see the members of Congress working together on some things,&#8221; the Republican continued, &#8220;and while I know that we can deal with divisive issues in the committee, it would be my hope that we could start every committee with a great unifying patriotic moment.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s unnecessary,&#8221; Nadler <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/gaetz-judiciary-meetings-pledge-nadler-were-covered">told</a> Gaetz. &#8220;The House begins every day with the Pledge of Allegiance; we&#8217;re covered by that.&#8221;
As <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/gaetz-judiciary-meetings-pledge-nadler-were-covered">noted</a> by Fox News, the House has kicked off with the pledge as part of its daily order of business since 1988.
&#8220;It’s not in our practice to do so,&#8221; Nadler said of saying the pledge more than once a day, adding, &#8220;I appreciate the gentleman&#8217;s suggestion, but we are covered by the House. We all say the Pledge of Allegiance every day.&#8221;
As the nation has become increasingly divided, generally unifying acts of patriotism, such as standing for the national anthem, have, too, become a partisan issue.
Back in 2016, then-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick politicized the anthem when he refused to stand over alleged anti-black racism in the United States. Now, the protest has spilled into other sports, such as professional basketball and women&#8217;s soccer.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick <a href="http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/08/27/kaepernick-refuses-to-show-pride-in-a-country-that-oppresses-black-people/">told</a> Steve Wyche of NFL Media at the start of his protest, back in 2016. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
“This is not something that I am going to run by anybody,” he continued. “I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. &#8230; If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.”

Matt Gaetz Requests Pledge Of Allegiance Before Hearings; Nadler Shoots Him Down

Perhaps the stupidest development to come out of the protests and riots is the Left&#8217;s bizarre announcement that lawful arrests are now &#8220;kidnapping.&#8221; Recent videos of law enforcement officials arresting wanted criminals and putting them in unmarked vehicles have provoked this sudden redefinition of terms. The latest such incident went viral when a &#8220;counterculture journalist&#8221; (who seems oddly to be completely in line with the culture, not counter to it at all) posted a <a href="https://twitter.com/MichelleLhooq/status/1288253381883113475">video</a> with the caption:
&#8220;NYC is taking after Portland — a trans femme protestor was pulled into an unmarked van at the Abolition Park protest — this was at 2nd Ave and 25th Street.&#8221;
This video has been shared all over social media, with people like MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes and Rep. Jerry Nadler describing it as &#8220;kidnapping&#8221; and &#8220;terrifying,&#8221; respectively. Nadler declared that police officers using unmarked vehicles during an arrest somehow amounts to a violation of the Constitution. Many on the Left have echoed this claim.
Meanwhile, back in the solid world of reality, the &#8220;kidnapping&#8221; victim was actually a wanted criminal who had allegedly vandalized and destroyed government property on five separate occasions. The people carrying out the arrest were members of the city&#8217;s warrant squad, and I know that because they were wearing shirts that said &#8220;Warrant Squad.&#8221; They were assisted by uniformed police wearing bright neon outfits that said &#8220;Police.&#8221; Yes, the van was unmarked, but that is nothing strange or innovative.
This will come as a shock to Rep. Nadler, who is shocked and scandalized by the concept of unmarked cars, but police have been using them for decades. The reason is rather logical. Most people, it turns out, don&#8217;t want to be arrested. People who don&#8217;t want to be arrested will tend to run away if they see a police car approach the scene. This is why police don&#8217;t always like to announce their presence with blaring sirens. None of this is new, weird, disturbing, or, for God&#8217;s sake, unconstitutional.
Of course, these days police have a whole host of additional reasons to use a lower profile. One obvious reason is that marked police cars are routinely targeted for arson attacks by &#8220;peaceful protesters.&#8221; <a href="https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/lapd-cars-damaged-during-protests-cost-80000-each/2385560/">In the city of Los Angeles</a>, for example, 156 LAPD patrol cars had been damaged by the end of June, each costing about $80,000 to repair. The protesters are destroying cop cars and then getting angry and screaming about fascism when cops must resort to using different kinds of vehicles.
All of this ridiculous &#8220;kidnapping&#8221; stuff is part of a larger, and just as ridiculous, narrative about our nation&#8217;s slide into &#8220;fascism.&#8221; It is hard to believe that anyone could look at the government&#8217;s paltry response to months of rioting, looting, and chaos, and come away convinced that we live under a fascist dictatorship. I have never lived under a fascist dictatorship — and I don&#8217;t now, and neither do you — but I feel pretty confident that a little bit of tear gas and a few rubber bullets would be the least of your worries if you behaved this way in such a country. But, as we have seen, the Left is never slowed down by facts or reality when constructing their narratives.

Democrats are accusing Attorney General William Barr of interrupting their riots and illegal spying with the rule of law.
This was only one of the furious accusations Democrats hurled at Barr after they invited him to a hearing to hear them interrupt him without a hearing.
Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Jerrold Nadler, who delayed the hearing to give him yet another chance to catch those wily three Billy Goats Gruff, accused the attorney general of being Donald Trump’s puppet.
Nadler said, “If the President tells you to enforce the rule of law, you rush right out like an automaton and enforce the rule of law. If the President tells you to treat everyone equally, you obey like a zombie and treat everyone equally. How can America trust a man who does not think for himself?”
When Barr tried to respond to these accusations, Nadler cut him off, afraid that Barr might guess that his name was really Rumpelstiltskin, forcing him to jump up and down until he fell through the floor.
Congresswoman Zoe Lofren accused Barr of teargassing protestors who were merely searching for peace and justice in the rubble of the cities they were burning to the ground.
Lofgren said, “This is martial law because marshals are enforcing the law in the same way these are peaceful protests because you have protesters breaking things into pieces.&#8221;
&#8220;If we can’t agree that the English language means whatever Democrats say it means, then this hearing is just going to devolve into unfounded accusations against you followed by me cutting you off before you have a chance to respond until my dishonesty is completely disguised by my hysterical hyperbole,&#8221; she added. &#8220;This is the kind of lawless behavior I expect under a Trump administration and we’re seeing it right now or if we’re not, it’s because I’m just getting started.”
Barr tried to respond, but the committee ruled it would be unfair for him to tell the truth before reading the Democrats their rights.

Democrat House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler claimed without evidence on Sunday that the violent Antifa riots in Portland were &#8220;a myth.&#8221;
Nadler&#8217;s remarks directly contradict video evidence that is widely available on social media and contradict what the Department of Homeland (DHS) says is happening in Portland.
&#8220;The violent situation Portland has witnessed for the past eight weeks continues with violent anarchists rioting on the streets as federal law enforcement officers work diligently and honorably to enforce federal law, defend federal property, and protect the lives of their fellow officers,&#8221; DHS said in a statement on Sunday. &#8220;As federal officers left the courthouse to respond to attacks on the fence, just like on previous nights they were met by rioters with hard projectiles, mortar style fireworks and lasers that can cause permanent blindness. Over the previous 24 hours, such assaults have resulted in at least 14 federal officers injured.&#8221;
Nadler was approached by journalist Austen Fletcher and asked if he disavowed the violent riots.
&#8220;It is true. There’s violence across the whole country,&#8221; Fletcher said. &#8220;Do you disavow the violence from Antifa that’s happening in Portland right now? There’s riots—&#8221;
&#8220;That’s a myth that’s being spread only in Washington, D.C.,&#8221; Nadler claimed without evidence.
&#8220;About Antifa in Portland?&#8221; Fletcher pressed.
&#8220;Yes—&#8221; Nadler once again claimed without evidence.
A person with Nadler, presumably an aide, rushed in to get Nadler away from the camera and took him to a car nearby.
&#8220;Sir, there’s videos everywhere online,&#8221; Fletcher said as Nadler walked away. &#8220;There’s fires and riots, they’re throwing fireworks at federal officers. DHS is there. Look online. It gets crazy, Mr. Nadler.&#8221;

On Thursday, House Judiciary chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) introduced a bill that would delay sending illegal immigrants who test positive for coronavirus back to their native countries.
Nadler’s <a href="https://nadler.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=394355">website</a> stated: “Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) introduced the Coronavirus Containment Act of 2020, legislation that will help stem the global spread of COVID-19 by requiring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to conduct testing for COVID-19 on individuals who are slated for removal or repatriation, and suspending the removal of individuals who test positive for COVID-19 until such individuals test negative for the virus in a manner approved by the CDC. The legislation also requires ICE to publish and regularly update data relating to the testing and removal or repatriation of individuals during the COVID-19 public health emergency.”
Nadler attacked President Trump in his statement, saying, “Not only has President Trump failed to contain COVID-19 within the United States, he has allowed ICE to recklessly export the pandemic abroad. If we want to seriously stop the spread of this global health crisis, we cannot let ICE continue the dangerous practice of repatriating individuals without appropriate testing.&#8221;
He continued, &#8220;The bill I&#8217;ve introduced requires ICE to expand testing for individuals set for repatriation and halt the removal of any individual who tests positive for COVID-19. The reality is this legislation should not even be necessary; this is just basic common sense and the minimum that ICE should be doing. By containing cases known to have originated in the United States, we can protect countless lives and ease the burdens that vulnerable countries face in battling this deadly disease.&#8221;
The bill <a href="https://judiciary.house.gov/uploadedfiles/nadler_coronavirus_containment_act.pdf?utm_campaign=4142-519">delineated the steps</a> to be taken in the event an illegal alien was found to have contracted the virus:
<blockquote>In the case that an individual tested under subsection (a)(1) tests positive for SARS–CoV–2, such individual may not be removed or otherwise repatriated until such individual (1) exhibits no symptoms of COVID–19 for at least 10 days; and (2) is administered 2 additional viral tests more than 24 hours apart and tests negative for SARS– CoV–2 each time such a viral test is administered.</blockquote>
The bill cited Haiti and Guatemala as examples of the necessity for delaying the deportation of immigrants ill with the virus:
<blockquote>Haiti is one of the most vulnerable nations in the world to SARS–CoV–2 with only a few dozen ventilators for 11 million people. Yet, in April 2020, multiple individuals who were repatriated or otherwise removed to Haiti on a single flight tested positive for SARS–CoV–2 upon their arrival. In May, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement planned to repatriate more than 100 individuals to Haiti, including individuals known to have COVID–19, but abandoned these plans after media scrutiny and pressure from the Haitian government.
As of mid-May 2020, more than 100 individuals have tested positive for SARS–CoV–2 upon arrival in Guatemala, prompting Guatemala to suspend repatriation flights from the United States on several occasions.</blockquote>
