Comedian Jay Leno said certain people believe he should get a girlfriend to keep him company as his wife of 45 years, Mavis, battles dementia.
The former host of “The Tonight Show” discussed what he’s been hearing during a recent <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h361wQC3E4M">episode</a> of the “Life Above the Noise with Maria Shriver” podcast.
“I’ve said this a bunch of times: you take a vow when you get married &#8212; and people are stunned … they’re so shocked that you would live up to it,” Leno said. Mavis was diagnosed with dementia in 2024 and Leno was granted a conservatorship in April of that year.
“My favorite thing was … and this is the most Hollywood thing. A guy said to me, ‘So, are you gonna get a girlfriend now?’” the 75-year-old comedian said.
Leno said he responded by saying, “Well no, I have a girlfriend. I’m married. Been married 45 years.”
The person apparently pushed back, saying, “Yeah, but you know what I mean.”

Leno went on to marvel at how people’s views on marriage have changed over the years. “No, we’re kinda in this together here,” he recalls saying. “Honey, I’ll be with my girlfriend! I’ll be back later,” he joked.
Leno said people now aren’t used to “just doing the right thing because you’re supposed to.”
“That used to be the norm, and then when you strayed, that was the out-of-whack part. Now the out-of-whack part is fairly common, and staying and doing what you’re supposed to do is stunning to people,” Leno told Shriver. “We kind of made a deal.”
“This is that thing of, ‘Okay, you’ve been pretty lucky up to this point. It’s been easy sailing. This is where it gets a little tricky,’” the former late night host added. “I’m glad I’m passing the test. Because you never quite know what you’re going to do in that situation. So I like to think I made the right decision.”

Stand-up comedian Jay Leno said his ticket sales have significantly increased since he dropped politics from his routine.
The former host of NBC&#8217;s “The Tonight Show” made the revelation during a recent appearance on “Today.”
“I’m on the road a lot. I just took politics out of it, completely. I know ticket sales are up 20, 30 percent, just because nobody wants to be lectured,” Leno told host Hoda Kotb.

He noted that touring required visiting states with more conservative voting records, which encouraged him to keep his material politically neutral — a contrast to the overtly partisan approach embraced by many current late-night hosts who came after him.
“When you’re on TV and you can play directly to your audience and there’s a laugh track. When you go to Indiana or Kentucky or any other place in the country, you’re always going to have a third of the people who don’t agree with you politically. So why even go there?” he added.
Kotb asked if comedy was “tricky” now that the temperature seems to have turned up, which Leno refuted.

“I don’t think it’s any trickier than any other [time]… No. You know, we’ve always had tough times,” the 75-year-old comedian replied. “It’s not that it’s better now … But stuff that used to be the law is now against the law… and that’s great.”
Leno also said he had high hopes for the future of comedy. “Yes, I’m very hopeful. I am optimistic,” he said. “‘Cause ultimately, it’s a bit like a donkey — sometimes you gotta hit it in the head with a two-by-four to get its attention, but eventually it will listen.”
This was similar to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jay-leno-called-the-2024-election-a-great-day-for-democracy">comments</a> the former late-night host made in January. At the time, he told Piers Morgan, “I just stopped doing politics in my act altogether. You know, when I did ‘The Tonight Show,’ the idea was you made fun of both sides equally … they’d both be angry. And I’d go, ‘Oh, that’s good.’ You know, they both think you’re supporting the other guy.” 
Leno added, “Now, you’ve gotta take a side and people are angry if you don’t.”

Comedian Bill Maher blasted the political Left for intolerance — particularly with regard to differing ideologies — during a recent conversation with comedian Jay Leno.
Leno joined Maher for the latest episode of his podcast, &#8220;Club Random&#8221; — and, at one point, the discussion turned to the late Rat Pack member Sammy Davis Jr. and the backlash he received for taking a photo at the White House with then-Republican President Richard Nixon.

&#8220;So what?&#8221; he asked.
Leno agreed with Maher&#8217;s take, but also pointed out that &#8220;at the time,&#8221; critics and activists had called Davis Jr. a &#8220;traitor.&#8221;
Maher touted the performer&#8217;s response: Davis Jr. had stood his ground and defended his meeting with Nixon by insisting that he&#8217;d support any politician, regardless of party, provided they got &#8220;results&#8221; for the people.

&#8220;It’s so funny you mention that because today we live in this time where you’re not allowed to have friends from the other side or cross lines politically, and I forgot that there’s an example of that way back when,&#8221; Maher added.
The HBO host went on to mock Democrats for getting bent out of shape when friends, family members, or co-workers dared to vote for someone they didn&#8217;t like.
&#8220;A guy who crossed lines politically. Oh, the worst thing you could ever do. Be friends with a Republican? Ah! Call 911!&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is what I f***ing hate about the Left. You know — and they’re not going to get me over to the Trump side, which they think they will sometimes — but just the idea of ‘cut your family off for Thanksgiving if they voted for the wrong guy.’ F*** off, you f***s.&#8221;
Maher concluded that the backlash against Davis Jr. was an early warning sign of the cancel culture that was yet to come — and largely from the left.
&#8220;Sammy, when he hugged Nixon, he was ostracized by the Left a lot. That was an early harbinger of that,&#8221; he said.

Former “Tonight Show” host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jay-leno">Jay Leno</a> explained why he’s walking around with severe black and blue bruises on his face, an eye patch, and a broken wrist.
The 74-year-old late-night icon <a href="https://www.insideedition.com/media/videos/jay-leno-tells-inside-edition-he-fell-down-a-60-foot-hill-in-pennsylvania-89629">told</a> “Inside Edition” on Tuesday that he fell down the side of a hill on his way to dinner before a recent stand-up show in Pittsburgh.
“I’m a little beat up,” he told the outlet.” “I fell 60 feet. Boom, boom, boom, boom.”
Leno said the black and blue bruises appeared after he “hit a bunch of rocks” during his tumble. The comedian also said one of the rocks hit his eye, which explains the eye patch. Leno revealed that he also lost a fingernail.

When the Inside Edition interviewer asked about Leno’s eyesight, he said, “It’ll be fine. I’m not worried about it.”

The fall didn’t keep Leno from performing at his scheduled show just three hours later and putting on another show in Beverly Hills over the weekend.
This is not Leno&#8217;s first serious accident. In January, he was involved in a motorcycle accident and sustained multiple broken bones. In 2022, he was working to repair a fuel line on one of his vintage cars when a leak caused gasoline to spray over his hands and face. A spark then ignited the gas. Leno underwent a series of treatments, including grafting procedures on both his hands and face. He credited his close friend standing nearby with acting quickly, likely saving his life.
In May, Leno said he was “lucky” to have survived so many accidents which could have been fatal.
“First of all they’re accidents. If they were deliberate, I would be complaining,” Leno said at the time.
He continued, “Look, I’ve been extremely lucky in my life, you know, and even though the accidents weren’t fun, I was still pretty lucky,” he added. “I didn’t lose an eye, I’m not horribly disfigured … well, just regular disfigured.”
“I’ve got a lot to be grateful for,” Leno <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ive-been-extremely-lucky-in-my-life-jay-leno-says-he-doesnt-let-recent-horrific-accidents-upset-him">said</a>. “First of all, in Hollywood – it’s only how you look, nobody cares how you feel like. I mean I still have a broken collar bone, two broken ribs and two cracked knee caps, but I’m getting around.”

Former late-night host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jay-leno">Jay Leno</a> said he was happy with the overall process of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/2024-election">2024 presidential election</a> even though he’s not a Donald Trump supporter.
“The Talk” host Natalie Morales asked Leno to share his thoughts Wednesday, saying, “We had a historic election last night and you are no stranger to going on and doing a live show, ‘The Tonight Show,’ after big elections like this. What do you remember about those days?”
“Well, you know it was different. In my day, you kind of made fun of both sides…now you kind of have to take a side and yeah, it&#8217;s a little bit different,&#8221; Leno replied.
He added, &#8220;But the nice thing about this election is, it was fair, it was honest. Okay, I was not a fan, but that’s okay. It’s the President of the United States. Let&#8217;s all get together. Thank you very much.”
Leno said he believes now is a time for unity. 
“You know my fear is…and it’s going to be name calling. There was no cheating. Everybody says it was honest. It’s a great day for democracy.”

The celeb also expanded on his feelings about Trump, saying, “I’m not a fan, and it has nothing to do with politics. I just don’t think morally — I think we could do a little bit better. You know all these indictments, whatever it might be.”
While Leno seems to be taking the election results in stride, plenty of other celebrities, including multiple late-night hosts, are having meltdowns over the fact that Trump won in a landslide. 
Jimmy Kimmel gave a tearful <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@jimmykimmellive/video/7434384448864537886">monologue</a>, saying, “Let’s be honest. It was a terrible night last night, it was a terrible night for women, for children. For hundreds and thousands of hardworking immigrants who make this country go&#8230;” before getting choked up.
“For democracy and decency. And you know it was a terrible night for those who voted against him. Guess what, it was a bad night for everyone who voted for him too, you just don’t realize it yet. The people voted and this is the choice we made. In January, Donald Trump becomes president and that is sad. He won.”

Speaking to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/jay-leno-feels-very-lucky-despite-burn-accident-challenges-wifes-dementia-battle">Fox News</a>, the 74-year-old former late-night talk show host and comedian said he didn’t focus on the struggles he’s faced over the last few years, after having to be hospitalized with third-degree burns to his hands and face from a car fire and breaking multiple bones in a motorcycle accident, after his wife&#8217;s diagnosis was revealed earlier this year.
&#8220;I got burned in a fire. I got a face full of gas,” Leno said. “A spark jumped. [It’s] not like, ‘How did this happen?’ I mean, people get burned every day.”
Leno &#8212; who was in the hospital for eight and a half days &#8212; said he “missed two days&#8217; work. So it wasn&#8217;t bad. It was &#8212; that is better than the broken leg, believe me.&#8221;
&#8220;I was on my motorcycle, and the guy had to wire across a driveway, but with no flag on it,” the comedian said. “And I turned, and the sun was in my eyes. And so it tore my face across.”

&#8220;I used to look like Abe Lincoln&#8221; he jokingly added. &#8220;No, I look exactly the same, just a better version … I’m saving face, put it that way. Or I’m a two-faced guy, any way you want to take it.&#8221;
Later, he opened up about his wife of 44 years and said she was doing good.
&#8220;It&#8217;s OK. You know, it&#8217;s life,” Leno said. “Everybody goes through it.”
&#8220;I&#8217;ve been very lucky in my life. I don&#8217;t complain about everything,” he added. “We have a lot of fun, and I cook dinner for her every night.&#8221;

In January, the former “The Tonight Show” host filed the paperwork in a Los Angeles courtroom to become the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/legal">conservator</a> of his wife’s estate following her dementia diagnosis, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jay-leno-files-for-conservatorship-of-wifes-estate-amid-her-dementia-diagnosis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The documents said that Leno’s wife “presently lacks the necessary capacity” to make her own decisions.
“Unfortunately, Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years,” the filing said. Mavis’ doctor added a capacity declaration confirming that Leno’s spouse “suffers from dementia, major neurocognitive disorder.”

Jay Leno Has Only Good Thoughts About His Life Amid Wife’s Dementia Battle

TV personality <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jay-leno">Jay Leno</a> filed to become the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/legal">conservator</a> of his wife&#8217;s estate following her dementia diagnosis.
The 73-year-old former <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/television">host</a> of “The Tonight Show” filed the paperwork in a Los Angeles courtroom on Friday, per <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2024/01/28/jay-leno-files-conservatorship-wife-mavis-dementia/72388172007/">USA Today</a>. The documents said that Leno’s wife, Mavis, 77, &#8220;presently lacks the necessary capacity&#8221; to make her own decisions. 
&#8220;Unfortunately, Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years,&#8221; the filing says. Mavis’ doctor added a capacity declaration confirming that Leno’s spouse &#8220;suffers from dementia, major neurocognitive disorder.&#8221;
The filing further states that Leno aims to manage Mavis&#8217; half of their shared property and her assets in a trust and would provide for her and her brother, the outlet reported.
Leno has been married to Mavis since 1980. The couple does not have any children.
Mavis kept a relatively low profile compared to her famous husband, but she was very devoted to feminist causes and has worked with non-profit organizations, including the Feminist Majority Foundation&#8217;s Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan, which she’s been involved with since 1997.
Leno made headlines last year after sustaining third-degree burns following a mishap while working on a car with a friend.
“The fuel line was clogged so I was underneath it,” Leno said in a Today Show interview in December 2022. “It sounded clogged and I said [to my friend Dave], ‘Blow some air through the line,’ and so he did.”

He remembers hearing a noise right before tragedy struck. “And suddenly, boom, I got a face full of gas. And then the pilot light jumped and my face caught on fire,” the comedian continued.
“I said to my friend, I said, ‘Dave, I’m on fire.’ And Dave’s like, ‘All right.’ I said, ‘No, Dave, I’m on fire.’ And then, ‘Oh, my God.’ Dave, my friend, pulled me out and jumped on top of me and kind of smothered the fire,” Leno said.

Comedian <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jay-leno">Jay Leno</a> has been through a lot in the last year, but he said on Saturday that even after all of that, there&#8217;s only one thing that could force him to retire: a stroke.
Leno, who appeared on Saturday at a kick-off event for his upcoming NBC reality show &#8220;Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge,&#8221; told fans that he would likely slow down if and when he ever suffered a stroke.
&#8220;Then you slow down,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That’s when you retire — when you have your stroke.&#8221;
The former &#8220;Tonight Show&#8221; host has been seriously injured in two serious accidents in the last year alone — just weeks apart — and has continued to perform even amid his ongoing recovery.
The first accident was an explosion and fire in his Los Angeles garage that caused <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jay-leno-reveals-what-went-down-in-his-garage-says-a-quick-thinking-friend-saved-his-life" target="_blank" rel="noopener">third-degree burns</a> to his face and hands. Leno had been attempting to repair a fuel line in his 1907 White Steam Car at the time – and he later said that his friend Dave&#8217;s quick response was what ultimately saved his life. Dave, who was with Leno when the gasoline ignited, smothered the flames.
The comedian spent several days in the hospital, where he was treated with skin grafts and some time in a hyperbaric chamber.

He only revealed the news <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/entertainment/entertainment-columns/kats/jay-leno-breaks-bones-in-2nd-accident-after-announcing-vegas-return-2719088/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">after being asked</a> by the Las Vegas Review-Journal how his recovery from the burns was progressing, at which point he said, &#8220;That was the first accident. The 73-year-old comedian said he&#8217;s got a lot to be &#8220;grateful&#8221; for after first surviving suffering <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jay-leno-recalls-the-moment-his-face-caught-on-fire-in-first-tv-interview-since-accident" target="_blank" rel="noopener">third-degree burns</a> to his hands and face that landed him in the hospital and two months later a motorcycle crash where he broke multiple bones, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/jay-leno-wont-complain-horrific-accidents-ive-got-a-lot-to-be-grateful-for">Fox News</a> reported.
&#8220;First of all they&#8217;re accidents. If they were deliberate, I would be complaining,&#8221; Leno said, before joking, &#8220;Ya, the guy deliberately set me on fire.&#8221;
&#8220;Look, I&#8217;ve been extremely lucky in my life, you know, and even though the accidents weren&#8217;t fun, I was still pretty lucky,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t lose an eye, I&#8217;m not horribly disfigured … well, just regular disfigured.&#8221;

Leno underwent a series of treatments, including grafting procedures on both his hands and face. He credited his close friend with saving his life after his quick thinking resulted in putting out the flames that could have otherwise possibly led to his death.
Leno landed in the hospital again in January, this time after getting in an accident on one of his vintage motorcycles and breaking multiple bones.

Patinkin picked up a sign and joined the protest on behalf of the Writers Guild of America, which has been on strike since May 2 over failed <a href="https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/wga-strike-amptp-hollywood-1235602326/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">negotiations</a> with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

On Monday, Patinkin posted a video that he described as what he &#8220;would be doing on TV without writers.&#8221;

&#8220;I had been eating a Flamin&#8217; Hot Dorito when I bit into it. It set my face on fire,&#8221; he added. &#8220;All third-degree burns. It was pretty bad.&#8221;

A CNBC source shared that the 72-year-old&#8217;s reality show &#8220;Jay Leno&#8217;s Garage&#8221; has been canceled, bringing to an end the TV host&#8217;s 30-year run of having a program on one of NBCUniversal&#8217;s TV channels, according to <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/jay-leno-nbc-career-cnbc-cancels-jay-leno-garage-1235311065/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hollywood Reporter</a>.
