People associated with the January 6 Committee who did not receive preemptive pardons from former President Joe Biden may be contacted to answer some questions, a Department of Justice (DOJ) official suggested on Sunday.
Ed Martin, the Trump administration&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ed-martin-planned-to-clean-up-dc-now-hes-setting-his-sights-on-the-whole-country" target="_blank" rel="noopener">weaponization czar</a> working under the supervision of Attorney General Pam Bondi, briefly spoke about probing the now-defunct panel at the end of an <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6377014112112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview on Fox News</a>.

&#8220;Baseless and politically motivated investigations wreak havoc on the lives, safety, and financial security of targeted individuals and their families,&#8221; Biden said in a statement at the time. &#8220;Even when individuals have done nothing wrong — and in fact have done the right thing — and will ultimately be exonerated, the mere fact of being investigated or prosecuted can irreparably damage reputations and finances.&#8221;
As the Trump administration is looking into whether aides improperly used autopen to sign off on executive actions in an effort to conceal Biden&#8217;s health issues, Bartiromo asked Martin if the pardons were legitimate.
&#8220;Well, yes, I&#8217;m the pardon attorney, so I have — I&#8217;m in that, too,&#8221; Martin said, referring to his other job at DOJ. &#8220;I can tell you we&#8217;re investigating how the pardons were granted. It was not like anything in the history of America what Joe Biden — not Joe Biden, his staffers did, not just with the autopen, but with faking him out on the memos.&#8221;

Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) — for suspected wrongdoing related to data retention and witnesses.

Now-former President Joe Biden spent his last few hours in office issuing blanket pardons — which he swore in 2020 that he would not do — to a few select people, most of whom he simultaneously claimed were not guilty of any wrongdoing.

President Joe Biden issued pardons on Monday morning to Dr. Anthony Fauci, former U.S. Army General Mark Milley, and members of the Democrat-run January 6 committee just hours before President-elect Donald Trump&#8217;s inauguration. 
Both Fauci and Milley were vicious critics of Trump, and previous reporting indicated that Biden would issue the pardons to stave off any potential criminal charges that might be brought against them during a second Trump administration.
“The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that any individual engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense,” Biden said in a statement. “Our nation owes these public servants a debt of gratitude for their tireless commitment to our country.”
Fauci has been criticized for his handling of COVID and the lab leak theory, as well as comments before Congress about gain-of-function research.
 At the end of the first Trump administration, Milley reportedly made secret calls to China, where he promised to warn Gen. Li Zuocheng of the People’s Liberation Army if Trump ordered a preemptive strike on China. In a statement after the pardons were announced, Milley said he was &#8220;deeply grateful for the President’s action today.&#8221;
&#8220;After forty-three years of faithful service in uniform to our Nation, protecting and defending the Constitution, I do not wish to spend whatever remaining time the Lord grants me fighting those who unjustly might seek retribution for perceived slights,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I do not want to put my family, my friends, and those with whom I served through the resulting distraction, expense, and anxiety.&#8221;

President Joe Biden on Thursday will honor former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney and others with the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second highest award a president can give to civilians.
The award is supposed to be given to those who “have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or fellow Americans,” The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/01/02/biden-cheney-presidential-citizens-medal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Cheney famously became one of President-elect Donald Trump’s most vocal critics and lost her re-election bid <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/17/politics/liz-cheney-worst-defeat-house-incumbent/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in a landslide</a>.
Cheney served as the vice chair of the House select committee that investigated the January 6, 2020, riot at the U.S. Capitol. During her time on that committee, Cheney communicated with an anti-Trump witness behind her lawyer’s back, The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/liz-cheney-communicated-with-anti-trump-j6-witness-behind-her-lawyers-back" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>, an astounding ethical violation for which Cheney faced no legal consequences. Biden aides have discussed a pre-emptive blanket pardon to protect Cheney from any inquiries or indictments from the incoming Trump administration that stem from her actions working against Trump. Biden aides have also discussed such pardons for Anthony Fauci and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who perpetuated the Russia collusion hoax against Trump.
Texts from Cheney show that she communicated with the J6 committee’s “star witness,” former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson. Cheney communicated with Hutchinson without her attorney Stefan Passantino’s knowledge.

Cheney also campaigned with Vice President Kamala Harris in the closing weeks of her losing campaign. Given Biden’s seeming <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/all-the-ways-biden-is-subtly-undermining-kamala" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attempts to undermine</a> Harris’ campaign, rewarding Cheney could be seen as a double win for the outgoing president.
Biden is also bestowing the award on Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who led the J6 committee with Cheney. In 2005, Thompson, along with 30 other Democrats, protested the certification of Ohio’s election results even though then-Sen. John Kerry had already conceded the election.
Other people set to receive the medal are Mary Bonauto, who argued on behalf of same-sex marriage before the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges, and Evan Wolfson, an attorney who also argued for the legalization of same-sex marriage.
Numerous other people who have been tied to Biden for decades will also receive medals in a ceremony on Thursday, including former senators Ted Kaufman of Delaware, Bill Bradley of New Jersey, and Chris Dodd of Connecticut. Bradley is also a former New York Knicks player.

Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) before he left office, thus insulating them from any potential charges stemming from their work on that committee. They also suggested similar pardons for Dr. Anthony Fauci and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who is now a senator-elect.
But despite the fact that Blumenthal is among the Democrats insisting that Trump&#8217;s new administration will &#8220;weaponize&#8221; the justice system against his political opponents, he told CNN anchor Jim Acosta that he would oppose blanket pardons for those who might be at risk.
&#8220;I strongly oppose preemptive pardons. First of all, it’s in some ways going to be perceived as an implicit acknowledgment of guilt,&#8221; Blumenthal explained, referencing his own past as a prosecutor. &#8220;And people should know that walking into a courtroom and making charges is far from proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. There is no evidence of wrongdoing against those members of the January 6 committees who brought those impeachment articles or who prosecuted them. And the likely beneficiaries of preemptive pardons would be the top echelon, and the underlings would still have the fear of that kind of prosecution.&#8221;

Blumenthal went on to explain that he would prefer to simply allow the criminal justice system to do its work, adding, &#8220;I think any such unfounded, unjust charges against people who simply did their jobs would ultimately cause a backlash against Donald Trump because there will be acquittals and the costs of their defense or investigation, I think, should be borne by a defense fund — I’d certainly contribute — or by a pro bono legal team, I sign up, count me in, because I think they are on the right side. And we ought to make these cases a test case for the principle of justice.&#8221;
Blumenthal shared a similar statement via X, saying, &#8220;Broad blanket preemptive pardons are a bad idea. Fully recognizing that DOJ &amp; other federal law enforcement may be weaponized for retribution or intimidation, the way to stop a bully is to confront him, not run &amp; hide.&#8221;

Embattled Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has been ordered to hand over all records related to her communications with special counsel Jack Smith and the House January 6 Committee after a court granted a motion for default adjustment against her on Tuesday.
Willis is leading a controversial RICO case against now-President-elect Donald Trump and several of his top associates for alleged election interference, which is now on pause.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney is giving Willis five business days to produce the material, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fani-willis-ordered-give-watchdog-all-communications-special-counsel-jack-smith" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> Tuesday night. McBurney also said in his ruling that Willis violated Georgia&#8217;s open records act when she failed to respond to nonprofit Judicial Watch&#8217;s lawsuit about the communication.
Willis&#8217; office claimed in March that it did not have any documents on file or communications with Smith or the J6 Committee, Fox noted. However, the claim was untrue, and the office did have such communication.
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bombshell-house-report-reveals-trump-prosecutor-nathan-wade-met-with-white-house" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daily Wire reporter Luke Rosiak</a> in October revealed Nathan Wade &#8211; Willis&#8217; romantic partner, whom she hired as special prosecutor in the Trump case &#8211; had extensive communications with the Biden White House, according to records.
Wade billed the Fulton County office for hours of meetings with the White House, the congressional January 6 committee, and other D.C. officials, according to records obtained by the House Judiciary Committee.
On November 18, 2022, he billed eight hours for “Interview with DC/White House,” but under oath, he claimed he didn’t remember the meeting and couldn’t even say whether it was online or in person. Between September 7 and September 9, 2022, Wade billed $6,000 to taxpayers for “Witness Interviews; conf call DC; team meeting,” but couldn’t remember what the D.C. meeting entailed.

A released <a href="https://judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/republicans-judiciary.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/2024-10-15%20Nathan%20Wade%20Deposition_Redacted_Errata.pdf">transcript</a> of an interview with Wade, which was compelled by subpoena, shows that Willis was preparing to prosecute Trump even before she took office. She put Wade on a “search committee” to find a prosecutor, which ultimately chose him for the job.
In addition to the accusation that her office was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bombshell-house-report-reveals-trump-prosecutor-nathan-wade-met-with-white-house" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allegedly working with the White House and top Democrats</a>, Willis has been marred by the hiring of Wade, her boyfriend, since the pair allegedly benefited financially from the arrangement.
Currently, it&#8217;s being worked through the courts to determine if Willis and her office can continue to prosecute the case. Wade has already been forced to resign from his position.

Former Trump White House chief strategist <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/steve-bannon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Steve Bannon</a> was released from federal prison in Connecticut on Tuesday morning after four months behind bars for his conviction on contempt of Congress charges.
Bannon, 70, was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/former-trump-aide-steve-bannon-begins-federal-prison-sentence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">imprisoned</a> on July 1 after he was convicted for not complying with a subpoena from the Democrat-run January 6 Committee in 2022. The committee had instructed Bannon to testify and produce certain documents, which he declined to do, citing executive privilege. After an attempt to stay the sentence pending appeal and denial to review the case by the Supreme Court, Bannon reported to federal prison. 
“If you’re not prepared to go to prison to fight for your country,” Bannon <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/29/us/steve-bannon-prison-release.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the New York Times on Tuesday. “You’re not prepared to fight for your country.”
The former Trump aide is <a href="https://apnews.com/article/steve-bannon-prison-release-56f2f7a17ae2273a29a0829234f56fae">expected</a> to speak at a news conference in Manhattan later on Tuesday. Before he went into the prison, Bannon said that the Justice Department was targeting him for his political views.

Bannon is not the only former Trump ally who has spent time behind bars. Peter Navarro, the director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy under Trump, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-ally-peter-navarro-freed-from-prison-to-speak-at-rnc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">served</a> four months in prison earlier this year after being convicted on contempt of Congress charges. 
Navarro, 75, was convicted and sentenced after he did not show up for a deposition with the January 6 Committee and did not provide it with certain documents, also citing the doctrine of executive privilege.

Navarro completed his sentence on July 17. Just hours after his release, Navarro traveled to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee to speak.

Newly-released texts show ex-Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), an outspoken opponent of former President Trump, communicated with the House January 6 Select Committee’s “star witness,” former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, unbeknownst to Hutchinson’s attorney, Stefan Passantino.

The texts between Hutchinson, who claimed she could offer more information to the committee, and Griffin began in April 2022; the hearings started two months later. On April 28, 2022, Griffin told Hutchinson that Cheney had concerns about Cheney&#8217;s own communication with Hutchinson, writing, “Her one concern was so long ad [sic] you have counsel, she can’t really ethically talk to you without him.”

On June 6, 2022, Hutchinson sent a text message to Cheney, writing, “Hi, this is Cassidy Hutchinson. I&#8217;m sorry for reaching out this way, but I was hoping to have a private conversation with you (soon) if you are willing.” Cheney texted back, &#8220;I would be happy to. Let me know what time works for you.”
“I&#8217;m free all day for a call or in-person, whichever you prefer. I really, really appreciate this,” Cheney wrote back.  That was three days before the January 6 hearings began. The Post reported that “around the same time, Hutchinson rejected Stefan Passantino as her counsel.”
The Oversight Subcommittee headed by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) “accused Cheney of using Passantino as a ‘scapegoat’ — and trying to get him debarred — in order to explain away the differences between Hutchinson’s earlier testimonies and subsequent testimonies,” the Post asserted.
During her testimony, Hutchinson, who was an aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, claimed that she was told by White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations Anthony Ornato that Trump shouted: “I’m the f***ing president! Take me up to the Capitol now!” and “lunged” to seize the steering wheel from his driver to join the January 6 protesters. The subcommittee report <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/03/11/us-news/house-gop-report-debunks-ex-trump-aide-cassidy-hutchinson-testimony-to-jan-6-panel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a> Ornato “testified that the first time he had ever heard the story Hutchinson claims Ornato told her on January 6, was during Hutchinson’s public testimony.”
The Secret Service agent driving the SUV also denied the story’s veracity. “The driver testified that he specifically refuted the version of events as recounted by Hutchinson,” the report stated, “The driver of the SUV testified that he ‘did not see him reach [redacted]. [President Trump] never grabbed the steering wheel. I didn’t see him, you know, lunge to try to get into the front seat at all.’”
The oversight subcommittee report also noted that the January 6 select committee “hid the driver’s full testimony and only favorably mentioned his testimony in its Final Report, it did not release the full transcript.”

On Wednesday, the House Freedom Caucus said Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bennie-thompson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bennie Thompson</a> (D-MS) should not be allowed to serve on the bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump because he introduced a bill that could strip Trump of Secret Service protection under certain conditions.
The group of a few dozen conservative members also pushed for Thompson, who served as chairman of the now-defunct January 6 Committee, to be removed as the top Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee — which has oversight of the Secret Service.
&#8220;In April, Rep. Bennie Thompson launched an effort with other radical progressive Democrats to deny Secret Service protection to President Trump — legislation that he continues to defend even after the attempted assassination on July 13,&#8221; the caucus said in a <a href="https://x.com/freedomcaucus/status/1816097861974495703/photo/1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.

&#8220;We therefore urge the removal of Rep. Thompson as Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security,&#8221; it added. Similarly, his actions should invalidate Rep. Thompson from serving on the task force to investigate the attempted assassination of President Trump.&#8221;
The group concluded, &#8220;Americans cannot trust that he will be an unbiased arbiter of the facts in the effort to get to the bottom of the greatest failure of the Secret Service in more than three decades.&#8221;

Thompson has faced blowback for legislation he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/former-january-6-panel-chair-unveils-bill-that-could-strip-trump-of-secret-service-protection" target="_blank" rel="noopener">introduced</a> in April that could strip a protectee of Secret Service protection if this person is convicted of a felony that is punishable with prison time of at least one year and sentenced.
Trump is not mentioned <a href="https://democrats-homeland.house.gov/imo/media/doc/disgraced_former_protectees_act_text.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in the bill</a>, but, in May a jury <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/verdict-trump-found-guilty-on-all-charges-in-hush-money-case" target="_blank" rel="noopener">convicted</a> Trump on dozens of felony counts in a New York hush-money case. Sentencing has been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-approves-delay-for-trump-sentencing-after-supreme-court-immunity-ruling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">postponed</a> until at least September as Trump seeks to get the <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/trump-asks-judge-toss-hush-money-conviction-dismiss/story?id=111807026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conviction thrown out</a>, but the former president could get prison time.
As <a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2024/jul/13/secret-service-faces-questions-after-donald-trump-/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a> by The Washington Times, Thompson insisted his bill &#8220;would not have affected the Secret Service’s presence&#8221; during the shooting at the Pennsylvania rally and will only apply to Trump if he gets sentenced to prison and is in the custody of another law enforcement agency.
Thompson repeated that claim during a hearing on Tuesday when he stressed that his bill &#8220;makes clear that when a protectee is sentenced and remanded to the custody of prison officials, the Secret Service is able to hand off the prisoner in an orderly fashion,&#8221; <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/07/23/us-news/gopers-slam-dem-bill-that-would-strip-trump-of-security-detail-in-prison-ask-mr-epsteins-family/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per the New York Post</a>.
But Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), a member of the Freedom Caucus, and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) have <a href="https://x.com/RepThomasMassie/status/1816124448086294649" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushed back</a> on Thompson&#8217;s claim by pointing out that the text of the legislation <a href="https://x.com/chiproytx/status/1816133955646869881" target="_blank" rel="noopener">does not mention</a> the requirement about incarceration.
A list of members on the bipartisan task force to investigate the Trump rally shooting is expected to be <a href="https://x.com/MZanona/status/1816130607363043428" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> on Thursday.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) <a href="https://x.com/MZanona/status/1816129642904051743" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Punchbowl News reporter Melanie Zanona</a> he did not think Thompson would be a &#8220;good choice&#8221; for the panel. He also said he spoke to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) about it and does not think it&#8217;s &#8220;gonna be an issue.&#8221;
<a href="https://x.com/emilybrooksnews/status/1816135746346164291" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hill&#8217;s Emily Brooks</a> noted on X that Thompson &#8220;seemed slightly bewildered&#8221; by the House Freedom Caucus statement. &#8220;I don’t even want to be on it,&#8221; Thompson told her. &#8220;I’ve never expressed an interest.&#8221;
Thompson also reportedly <a href="https://x.com/emilybrooksnews/status/1816129223142064621" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> he would remain as ranking member while a spokesperson for Jeffries told the Freedom Caucus to &#8220;pipe down.&#8221;

Conservatives Demand Jan. 6 Committee Chair Be Kept Off Trump Rally Shooting Task Force

Former Trump White House aide <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/peter-navarro" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Peter Navarro</a> was released from federal prison in Florida on Wednesday morning and is preparing to speak at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Wednesday night.
Navarro, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/former-trump-aide-peter-navarro-decries-partisan-weaponization-of-justice-as-he-begins-prison-sentence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">imprisoned</a> for four months after being convicted of contempt of Congress charges, has been a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump. The 75-year-old was sentenced after he did not show up for a deposition with the Democrat-run January 6 committee and did not provide them with certain documents, citing the doctrine of executive privilege. 
Navarro, who was the director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy under Trump, has maintained he did nothing wrong, saying he was targeted because of his political views and connections to Trump.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts rejected an effort by Navarro to avoid prison time while he appealed his case. 
Navarro will <a href="https://apnews.com/article/peter-navarro-prison-republican-national-committee-2b443fdbf14164fed4650332aaf6d0c9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> speak around 6:00 p.m. CST Wednesday as the RNC enters its third day.

Another former Trump White House aide, Steve Bannon, is currently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/former-trump-aide-steve-bannon-begins-federal-prison-sentence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">serving</a> a four-month prison term over his conviction on similar charges. 
Bannon was also convicted for not complying with a subpoena from the January 6 committee in 2022 instructing him to testify and produce certain documents for the committee. After a lengthy appeals process, a federal judge <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/federal-judge-orders-bannon-to-report-to-prison">ordered</a> Bannon to report to prison on July 1. 
On the campaign trail, Trump has sharply criticized the Biden administration, saying that it has weaponized the Justice Department against him and his supporters. After a judge dismissed Jack Smith’s case against him over his handling of classified documents, the former president <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-responds-to-documents-case-being-dismissed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> all legal cases against him should be dropped.
