Yes. All 6 feet and 8 inches of James Comey, the former FBI director who spent years weaponizing the Justice Department against President Donald Trump, is surrendering to federal authorities today after a grand jury in North Carolina handed down two felony counts, each carrying up to five years in prison.
To quote the wise Hillary Rodham Clinton: &#8220;No one is above the law.&#8221;
I can&#8217;t help but laugh at the sheer teenage drama of it all, because as a former teenage girl myself, I know this character arc by heart. Comey&#8217;s entire career has been one long, awkward coming-of-age story, and he&#8217;s finally reaching the make-or-break point of girlhood.
In the beginning, there is a quest for autonomy. That early-teen &#8220;you&#8217;re not the boss of me&#8221; phase my mother begrudgingly endured, where you suddenly become the smartest person in the house. As FBI director, Comey weaponized the Department of Justice against a duly elected president, signed off on FISA warrants built on a phony Steele dossier, pushed the Russia collusion hoax for years, and leaked sensitive memos to the media while dressing it up as &#8220;higher loyalty.&#8221; Classic teenager move: convinced that perceived righteousness exempts you from the rules everyone else has to follow.
He then enters the social performance stage of life, that unruly stretch of caring too much what your tribe thinks. Comey began this stage last year when he &#8220;stumbled upon&#8221; seashells on the seashore, arranged to spell &#8220;86 47.&#8221; For anyone who doesn&#8217;t speak dinner-table shorthand: &#8220;86&#8221; has meant &#8220;get rid of it&#8221; since the 1930s. “47” is, of course, the 47th president, Donald Trump. But you needn’t know either of those facts to get the message. At the time he posted it, Leftist protesters were plastering that phrase everywhere. It was the new viral call-to-death chant against the president.
Comey himself admitted he recognized it as a &#8220;clever political thing,&#8221; before gushing over the &#8220;artistic flair&#8221; of the seashells, snapping a photo, and posting it to Instagram for his hundreds of thousands of followers. He knew exactly what he was doing.
This is the same man who spent decades prosecuting gangs for far less direct threats, but he believes he’s above institutional power, so he thought a simple “delete and play dumb” would suffice. That&#8217;s how coded language works in the assassination culture the Left has mainstreamed — where 56% of left-wingers say it would be somewhat justifiable to murder the president — plausible deniability built right in. &#8220;They were just pretty seashells!”
This matters more than a beach photo op. At the time Comey posted it, Trump had already survived at least two assassination attempts. The shot had already been fired. The bullet had already grazed his ear. And Comey, the former head of the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, decided that was the moment to signal to the mob.
Finally, Comey has entered his principled idealist phase. The late-teen “I’m immovable and morally superior” stage. After the indictment dropped, Comey released a video declaring, &#8220;I&#8217;m still innocent, and still not afraid.&#8221; He’s the protagonist in his own head, forever the hero resisting the big bad demagogue.
We can be certain of this because he quite literally wrote a book about it. His new novel explores how right-wing podcasters are radicalizing people into political violence.
You can’t help but laugh.
The man who posted a public call to &#8220;86&#8221; a sitting president — one who had already survived multiple assassination attempts — is now lecturing America about incitement.
Let&#8217;s also be honest about the obvious double standard: imagine, for one second, current FBI Director Kash Patel posting a photo of seashells spelling out &#8220;86 46&#8221; about Joe Biden. We all know what it would mean. We all know exactly how fast the media and the DOJ would have detonated. But when Comey did signal the useful idiots to remove the 47th president? Crickets.
This was never about seashells. It&#8217;s about an assassination culture the Left spent years building. The manifestos, the cheers when the bullet hit, the &#8220;mostly peaceful&#8221; rhetoric that somehow always ends with conservatives in the crosshairs. Comey didn&#8217;t just participate in that culture. He performed it on the national stage, with his name, his platform, and his hundreds of thousands of followers, and then acted shocked when his actions had consequences.
America’s Tallest Teenage Girl is finding out. 
He’ll whine, he’ll cry, he’ll insist it was just a silly beach photoshoot. But we know better, and more importantly, so does a grand jury in North Carolina.

The United States Department of Justice on Tuesday indicted former FBI Director James Comey for a second time.
The new charges stemmed from a provocative Instagram post shared by the ex-FBI chief last year. Comey&#8217;s photo showed a seashell formation — which he claimed to have stumbled across by happenstance — depicting the numbers &#8220;86&#8221; and &#8220;47.&#8221;

Critics immediately assumed that the shell formation had a sinister meaning. In the restaurant world, &#8220;86&#8221; generally means to take out or eliminate, and &#8220;47&#8221; was a presumptive reference to President Donald Trump, who is currently serving as the 47th President of the United States.
A federal grand jury in North Carolina <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nced.227449/gov.uscourts.nced.227449.1.0_2.pdf">returned a two-count felony indictment and an arrest warrant</a> against Comey: making threats to kill or harm President Trump, and sending those threats across state lines using social media.
&#8220;While this case is unique and this indictment stands out because of the name of the defendant, his alleged conduct is the same kind of conduct that we will never tolerate and that we will always investigate and regularly prosecute,&#8221; Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said. 
Comey, in a<a href="https://jamescomey.substack.com/p/seashells?r=16z5v&amp;utm_medium=ios&amp;triedRedirect=true"> video posted on his Substack</a>, said he&#8217;s innocent.
&#8220;Well, they&#8217;re back. This time about a picture of seashells on a North Carolina Beach a year ago, and this won&#8217;t be the end of it, but nothing has changed with me. I&#8217;m still innocent, I&#8217;m still not afraid, and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary, so let&#8217;s go,&#8221; Comey said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s really important that all of us remember this is not who we are as a country. This is not how the Department of Justice is supposed to be. And the good news is we get closer every day to restoring those values &#8212; keep the faith.&#8221;

The now-deleted post earned Comey a visit from the Secret Service — and the ousted FBI head honcho released a public message attempting to downplay the incident.
“I posted a picture earlier of some shells I saw on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message,” <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DJsN4GAPoxY/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=886304d8-adff-42b4-905a-620db16415c1">Comey said on Instagram.</a> “I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”
The Justice Department said the case has been under investigation over the past 11 months.
&#8220;This investigation just didn&#8217;t come now. It&#8217;s the result of a lot of work by law enforcement over the past year,&#8221; Blanche said. &#8220;I am not going to talk about the evidence that we have. That&#8217;s unfair to him. It&#8217;s unfair to the prosecutors, but it&#8217;s enough to say that the grand jury returned an indictment.&#8221;

Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker escalated the criticism, slamming President Donald Trump as an &#8220;authoritarian&#8221; and accusing his administration of stripping Americans of their rights.

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he planned to replace current Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem with Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) — and while the impact of that shake-up will certainly be felt across the administration and the Senate, it also marks a clear departure from the frequent personnel shakeups of Trump&#8217;s first term.
By this point in Trump’s first administration, more than half a dozen <a href="https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2017/08/politics/trump-admin-departures-trnd/#:~:text=Trump%20was%20irked%20by%20reports,Secretary%20of%20Labor%20%7C%20Trump%20appointee">major players</a> had already been summarily dismissed — from an adviser and a deputy chief of staff to Health and Human Services Secretary and even Secretary of State. And although a few of those who got the presidential boot were holdovers from former President Barack Obama&#8217;s administration, a fair few were people Trump had believed were the right fit for his administration — until they weren&#8217;t.
It was no surprise, for example, that Trump would fire Deputy Attorney General <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/youre-fired-trump-sacks-acting-attorney-general-ben-shapiro">Sally Yates</a> — an Obama appointee — in the first ten days of his administration. General Michael Flynn lasted three weeks before he was fired as National Security Advisor. Obama&#8217;s Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, resigned by mid-April, and in early May, Trump fired FBI Director <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-trump-fires-fbi-director-comey-ben-shapiro">James Comey</a>.
But by mid-July, the president was already on his second White House Press Secretary after Sean Spicer resigned, and by the end of the month, the tenure of other staffers was being measured in &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/legend-scaramucci-fired-white-house-after-week-ben-shapiro">Scaramuccis</a>&#8221; after Anthony Scaramucci only lasted ten days as White House Communications Director. White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus was also fired before the end of July, and advisors Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka were gone before the end of August.
The first cabinet member to go was Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, who resigned from his post in late September. And by the end of March 2018, two more cabinet members were out — Secretary of State <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-rex-tillerson-out-secretary-state-amanda-prestigiacomo">Rex Tillerson</a> and Secretary of Veterans Affairs <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-trump-ousts-scandal-plagued-veterans-ryan-saavedra">David Shulkin</a> — along with a laundry list of lower-level staffers.
Trump almost constantly faced attacks and leaks from staff on their way out the door. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/omarosa-former-star-apprentice-leave-white-house-joseph-curl">Omarosa Manigault Newman</a>, for example, was fired in December of 2017 — and within a year, she&#8217;d released a tell-all book and made a slew of accusations against the man who first made her a star on NBC&#8217;s &#8220;The Apprentice.&#8221;
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cnbcs-kernen-torches-scaramucci-over-trump-takes-do-you-ever-eat-any-crow">Scaramucci</a> also turned on Trump after he was fired, referring to his former boss — and former friend — as an &#8220;orange wrecking ball,&#8221; and said in 2019 that Trump was suffering from &#8220;early stage fascism.&#8221; Tillerson was slightly more measured in his criticisms of the president, calling him &#8220;undisciplined&#8221; and claiming that he &#8220;disregards briefing reports.&#8221;
After screening more strictly for loyalty his second time around, Trump&#8217;s staff retention has been markedly higher.
Noem is just the second big name in the second Trump administration to be removed from her post — the first being former National Security Adviser <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/flurry-of-reports-claim-mike-waltz-out-as-national-security-adviser">Michael Waltz</a> — and neither of the two have been asked or ordered to leave the administration entirely. Waltz has since been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/curveball-amid-rumors-that-mike-waltz-was-fired-trump-gives-him-another-top-admin-post">appointed</a> to serve as Ambassador to the United Nations, and Noem <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-fires-dhs-secretary-kristi-noem-announces-replacement">will become</a> Trump&#8217;s Special Envoy for &#8220;The Shield of the Americas,&#8221; a western hemisphere security initiative that is set to be unveiled in the coming days.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi warned former FBI Director James Comey and New York AG Letitia James on Monday that the Department of Justice is not done with them, promising an appeal after a federal judge dismissed charges against the pair.
&#8220;We’ll be taking all available legal action, including an immediate appeal, to hold Letitia James and James Comey accountable for their unlawful conduct,&#8221; Bondi told the press on Monday, Fox News reported.
&#8220;I’m not worried about someone who has been charged with a very serious crime,&#8221; she said specifically of Comey. &#8220;His alleged actions were a betrayal of public trust.&#8221;
U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie dismissed charges without prejudice against both Comey and James on procedural grounds, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/federal-judge-tosses-charges-against-james-comey-letitia-james?topStoryPosition=undefined&amp;author=Tim+Pearce&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=3&amp;row=1&amp;rowHeadline=Top+Stories&amp;rowType=Top+Stories&amp;title=Federal+Judge+Tosses+Charges+Against+James+Comey%2C+Letitia+James">The Daily Wire</a> reported Monday. Currie said Lindsey Halligan, the Trump-appointed prosecutor who secured their indictments, was unlawfully serving as interim U.S. attorney.
President Donald Trump appointed Halligan to serve as interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, replacing former U.S. attorney Erik Siebert. Siebert resigned from the position after leading investigations into Comey and James, but stopping short of filing charges. Halligan was previously a member of Trump’s legal team.

&#8220;We have made Lindsey Halligan a special U.S. attorney so she is in court, she can fight in court just like she was, and we believe we will be successful on appeal,&#8221; Bondi said.

The Justice Department <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/comey-indicted-for-lying-to-congress-no-one-is-above-the-law">indicted</a> Comey in September on charges of giving false statements and obstruction of a congressional proceeding. The charges stemmed from testimony Comey delivered to Congress in 2020 on his handling of the FBI investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
The department <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/letitia-james-indicted-following-doj-probe-into-2023-sweetheart-home-loan">brought</a> charges against James in October, over a loan she received in 2023 to secure a mortgage on a house in Virginia. James allegedly claimed the Virginia home as her primary residence while working as New York’s attorney general, a position which requires James to live in the state of New York. James secured more favorable terms on the mortgage, while the home was occupied by a relative of James instead.

A federal judge on Monday dismissed charges against former FBI head James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie dismissed the charges against both Comey and James after finding that Lindsey Halligan, the Trump-appointed prosecutor who secured their indictments, was unlawfully serving as interim U.S. attorney.
“I agree with Mr. Comey that the attorney general’s attempt to install Ms. Halligan as interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was invalid. And because Ms. Halligan had no lawful authority to present the indictment, I will grant Mr. Comey’s motion and dismiss the indictment without prejudice,” Currie wrote in an order dismissing the case against the former FBI head, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/24/nyregion/james-comey-case-dismissed.html">The New York Times</a>.
The judge dismissed the charges against James in a similar order. The pair of rulings is a setback for President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice, which has brought several high-profile cases against top Trump antagonists.
Prosecutors could attempt to refile the charges against Comey and James, or the department could appeal the judge&#8217;s rulings.

Trump appointed Halligan, previously a member of Trump’s legal team, to serve as interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, replacing former U.S. attorney Erik Siebert. Siebert resigned from the position after leading investigations into Comey and James, but stopping short of filing charges.
The Justice Department <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/comey-indicted-for-lying-to-congress-no-one-is-above-the-law">indicted</a> Comey in September on charges of ​​giving false statements and obstruction of a congressional proceeding. The charges stemmed from testimony Comey delivered to Congress in 2020 on his handling of the FBI investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
The department <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/letitia-james-indicted-following-doj-probe-into-2023-sweetheart-home-loan">brought</a> charges against James in October over a loan she received in 2023 to secure a mortgage on a house in Virginia. James allegedly claimed the Virginia home as her primary residence while working as New York’s attorney general, a position which requires James to live in the state of New York. James secured more favorable terms on the mortgage, while the home was occupied by a relative of James instead.
Comey and James denied the charges against them.
Trump has openly disdained Comey and James, while denying accusations that he directed the Justice Department to file charges against either.

Federal Judge Tosses Charges Against James Comey, Letitia James

President Donald Trump denied that recent prosecutions against some of his most vocal critics amount to “political retribution,” saying the accused “were so dirty, they were so crooked&#8221; that prosecution was necessary.
Trump sat for an <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/read-full-transcript-norah-odonnell-60-minutes-interview-with-president-trump/">interview</a> with CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” his first interview with the program in five years. CBS correspondent Norah O&#8217;Donnell asked the president about recent Justice Department cases brought against his former national security adviser John Bolton, former FBI chief James Comey, and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Asked if the prosecutions amount to retribution, Trump reminded O’Donnell that he was indicted first.
“You know who got indicted? The man you&#8217;re looking at. I got indicted, and I was innocent. And here I am, because I was able to beat all of the nonsense that was thrown at me,” Trump responded.

“These people are scum. And yet, when you go after a dirty cop like Comey or a guy like Bolton, who I hear has, I don’t know anything about it, I hear he took records all over the place,” Trump continued. “Letitia James is a terrible, dishonest person, in my opinion. Terrible. I just won the case against her. She wanted me to pay $500 million for something I didn’t do anything wrong on. And the judge just overturned the decision.”
Comey was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/comey-indicted-for-lying-to-congress-no-one-is-above-the-law">indicted</a> in September on charges of ​​giving false statements and obstruction of a congressional proceeding. Trump Says Bolton, Comey, James ‘Were So Dirty’ DOJ Had No Choice But To Prosecute

Former FBI Director James Comey asked a federal judge to dismiss the Justice Department’s case against him on Monday, claiming he was the victim of a “vindictive” prosecution.
Comey was charged last month with making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding over his handling of an FBI investigation into Russia. In his <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.vaed.582135/gov.uscourts.vaed.582135.59.0.pdf">motion</a> to dismiss, he said that he has committed no crimes and is being targeted because of his criticism of President Donald Trump. 
“The government has singled out Mr. Comey for prosecution because of his protected speech and because of President Trump’s personal animus toward Mr. Comey. Such a vindictive and selective prosecution violates the First Amendment, Due Process Clause, and equal protection principles. The proper remedy for this unconstitutional prosecution is dismissal with prejudice,” his legal team wrote. 
The indictment accuses Comey of lying to Congress about authorizing a person identified as “Person 3” to leak information to the media. Person 3 was identified in Comey’s motion to dismiss as his longtime friend and Columbia Law School Professor Daniel Richman. He pleaded not guilty on October 8. 
Comey’s motion to dismiss alleges that the indictment “presents an inaccurate description of the testimony at the heart of this case.” His motion also cited Trump’s Truth Social posts about Comey before and after the indictment, including one on September 25 in which Trump celebrated the charges.

On Sunday, the Justice Department <a href="https://x.com/JerryDunleavy/status/1980268461176533170">took aim</a> at Comey’s defense, arguing that Patrick Fitzgerald, his lead lawyer, may be caught up in a conflict of interest. This is based on reports that Fitzgerald was involved in Comey’s media strategy in the days before Trump fired him. 
“Based on publicly disclosed information, the defendant used current lead defense counsel to improperly disclose classified information,” the DOJ said. “This fact raises a question of conflict and disqualification for current lead defense counsel.”
Fitzgerald has denied that he or Comey ever leaked classified information to the media. 
The complicated case is overseen by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. A trial date has been set for January 5.

Comey Asks Judge To Toss Charges, Claims ‘Vindictive’ Prosecution Is Political Payback

Former FBI Director James Comey will go to trial on January 5, after pleading not guilty to charges tied to his handling of the FBI’s Russia investigation.
Comey appeared Wednesday morning before Judge Michael Nachmanoff in Alexandria, Virginia, for his arraignment in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He is charged with making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding.
According to the <a href="https://x.com/JerryDunleavy/status/1971357752443404605">indictment</a>, the charges trace back to Comey’s September 2020 congressional testimony about his handling of the FBI’s probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Prosecutors filed the case just days before the statute of limitations was set to expire on September 30.
The prosecution, led by U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan, stated that they expected the trial to last 2-3 days. Nachmanoff set the trial start for January 5 after both sides requested more time. 
“This does not appear to me to be an overly complicated case,” he <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10/08/us/james-comey-arraignment-fbi">said</a>, according to the New York Times. “I’m not going to force you to go to trial in December if both sides don’t feel they can be ready.”

Between now and the trial, Comey’s defense team is expected to file several motions to dismiss the case altogether. 
The indictment says that Comey falsely told a senator that he had not “authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports” regarding an FBI investigation into someone identified as “Person 1.” This statement was false, the indictment alleges, because Comey had authorized someone to be an anonymous source for news reports. 
“No one is above the law,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said after the indictment was announced. “Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people. We will follow the facts in this case.”

Topline: Tragedy rocked a small town in Michigan after a man targeted a Mormon church on Sunday, opening fire on the congregants and leaving the building ablaze.
The horrific attack on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc left the church completely engulfed in flames. Grand Blanc is a small community of about 8,000 people and a suburb of Flint, about 50 miles from Detroit.
The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. ET, while the church was in service. Hundreds of people were worshiping when the gunman rammed his truck into the building. He then opened fire on congregants, shooting at least 10 people. At some point, the church was set on fire; officials believe the fire was intentionally set by the suspect, perhaps using an accelerant such as gasoline.

According to police, the gunman was killed in a shootout with authorities. At least four people have been confirmed killed, not including the gunman, and multiple others were wounded. Officials have stated that they fear the casualty count will rise due to the fire.
The gunman: The shooter was a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan, just a few miles from the church, according to police.
A pickup truck was used to ram through the church. Reports say that the vehicle had two large American flags in the cab. Other reports have said the suspect is an Iraq War veteran.
Authorities said they have targeted the gunman’s home with search warrants and are going through cell phone records to find out more about the motive.
Step back: This comes a month after the deadly shooting that targeted the Annunciation Catholic School in Minnesota.
Washington reacts: President Donald Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115283020712432544">issued</a> a statement saying that this “appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.” He asked that Americans “PRAY for the victims, and their families,” and added, quote, “THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!”
Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel also responded quickly, confirming that federal agents were on the scene to assist local authorities. Patel <a href="https://michiganadvance.com/2025/09/28/fatal-shooting-and-fire-at-michigan-mormon-church-police-say/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">added</a> that “violence in a place of worship is a cowardly and criminal act.”

Topline: President Trump continues to take his crime crackdown nationwide, announcing plans to deploy troops to Portland to protect ICE facilities. 
President Trump is clearly feeling emboldened to expand his efforts after the successful operation in DC. Now, he is looking for similar results in Portland, Oregon, a city ravaged by crime and violent political riots over the last five years.
Writing on Truth Social on Saturday, the president announced: “At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland … I am authorizing Full Force, if necessary.” 
Why Portland? Trump says the city is the epicenter of activity for &#8220;Antifa,&#8221; the far-left political movement that has been linked to riots and violent demonstrations for years now.
Militants have repeatedly laid siege to ICE processing facilities in the city, attacking agents with rocks, fireworks, and smoke grenades, blocking entrances, setting fires, and even doxxing federal agents, posting their home addresses on message boards and flyers around the city, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
In response to that violence in Portland and elsewhere, last week, Trump issued an executive order saying, &#8220;I hereby designate Antifa as a &#8216;domestic terrorist organization.&#8217;” calling it a “militarist, anarchist enterprise that explicitly calls for the overthrow of the United States Government” while using a “campaign of violence and terrorism nationwide to accomplish these goals.” 
Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller <a href="https://x.com/Huberton/status/1971953265408725073">said</a> earlier this month: “The Antifa riots, the attacks on ICE officers, the doxxing campaigns, and now the political assassinations. These are not lone, isolated events. This is part of an organized campaign of radical left terrorism. It is structured and sophisticated, well-funded, it is well planned … It is terrorism on our soil.”
Portland pushes back: Flyers were reportedly posted around the city, calling on members to “Squad up. Make travel plans. Bring PPE and your unhinged Portland energy.”
Democratic lawmakers in the city have doubled down on their opposition to Trump — the city’s official website has a permanent banner at the very top that reads “Portland is a sanctuary city.” The site links to an anti-ICE hotline and reassures residents that local law enforcement will not cooperate with federal immigration agents. Over the weekend, Democratic lawmakers from across the city decried Trump’s efforts as authoritarian, saying they had things under control.
Oregon Democratic Governor Tina Kotek <a href="https://x.com/KatieDaviscourt/status/1972054518994190732">said</a> on Saturday: “Portland and the state of Oregon believe in the rule of law, and we can manage our own local public safety needs. There is no insurrection, there is no threat to national security, and there is no need for military troops in our major city. They are not needed here.”
On Sunday, Oregon and Portland filed a joint lawsuit against the Trump administration in an effort to block the deployment of the state’s National Guard. Their suit claimed in part, “Far from promoting public safety, Defendants’ provocative and arbitrary actions threaten to undermine public safety by inciting a public outcry.”

Topline: The FBI placed hundreds of plainclothes agents in the crowd around the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. The years-long refusal by the FBI to acknowledge those 274 agents until now has raised many questions about past bureau leadership.
Trump weighs in: President Trump aired some frustration on his <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115277207989888806">Truth Social</a> account on Saturday. He wrote, “This is different from what [former FBI Director Christopher Wray] stated, over and over again!” Trump lumped in Wray with former FBI Director James Comey as two officials who “got caught lying.” The president later told <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-weighs-whether-doj-investigate-former-fbi-director-christopher-w-rcna234225">NBC News</a> that he “would certainly imagine” that Wray is being investigated by the Justice Department.
The new sheriff: FBI Director Kash Patel <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fbis-patel-clarifies-role-hundreds-agents-jan-6-says-wray-lied-congress">clarified</a> that the plainclothes agents were sent in “against FBI standards” after the riot had started for crowd control, and that “[t]his was the failure of a corrupt leadership that lied to Congress and to the American people about what really happened.”
The hot seat: Wray is facing numerous questions, even from rank-and-file FBI agents who were present at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. An after-action report <a href="https://justthenews.com/accountability/fbi-bombshell-274-agents-sent-capitol-j6-many-later-complained-they-were-political">revealed</a> to Congress last week lists a host of issues that agents have had with FBI leadership. Several agents have expressed concerns that politics had deeply influenced the bureau’s mission over the course of Comey and Wray’s tenures.
Another indictment?: Republican Congressman Andy Biggs of Arizona said Wray “will be held accountable” and pointed to an <a href="https://x.com/RepAndyBiggsAZ/status/1679164288546529281">exchange</a> he had with Wray in 2023:

WRAY: As I sit here right now, I do not believe there were undercover agents on scene.</blockquote>
Worth noting: If it comes to an indictment, some have disputed that “plainclothes” is synonymous with “undercover.” Additionally, Wray made it clear that he believed his statements to be true, but stopped short of explicitly stating they were true. This ambiguity underscores that, regardless of the frustration over the FBI, perjury cases are challenging to win convictions in.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” with host Jake Tapper on Sunday and defended the recent indictment of former FBI head James Comey.
Tapper pressed Johnson on the indictment, asking if it was proper for a president “to publicly or privately instruct their Attorney General to prosecute a political opponent,” but Johnson pushed back.
“As a constitutional attorney and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, do you believe it&#8217;s acceptable for any president to publicly or privately instruct their attorney general to prosecute a political opponent and go as far as firing a U.S. attorney if they don’t bring charges because they don’t think the case is strong enough?” Tapper asked.
Johnson rebutted Tapper, noting that it wasn’t the president who indicted Comey, but a grand jury of his peers.
“I’m glad you brought up the principle, that is exactly what’s at issue here. James Comey lied to Congress. He took an oath. He said things to Congress that were simply not true. It’s called perjury. A grand jury … a non-partisan, non-biased grand jury that was assembled looked at the charges and they agreed. They voted to bring an indictment of James Comey &#8212; not President Trump, not the DOJ, but a grand jury,” Johnson said. “That’s how our system works. It’s a very important principle for us to apply that everybody has to subscribe to the law — even a former FBI director. And he has lots to answer for.”
Johnson added that there were “many things” over which Comey could have been indicted, but the statutes of limitations ran out.

Comey’s indictment comes just days ahead of a major deadline: September 30, when the statute of limitations was set to expire on claims made by Comey during the 2020 hearing.
Comey is the first former senior administration official to be indicted in connection with the Russian collusion conspiracy and the FBI investigation into false ties between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.

It was a long time coming.
On Thursday, it was announced that a grand jury had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/morning-brief-comey-charged-ice-shooter-investigated-californias-crime-wave-intensifies?author=Morning+Wire&amp;category=undefined&amp;elementPosition=12&amp;row=3&amp;rowHeadline=Latest+News&amp;rowType=Vertical+Carousel&amp;title=Morning+Brief%3A+Comey+Charged%2C+ICE+Shooter+Investigated+%26+California%E2%80%99s+Crime+Wave+Intensifies">indicted</a> a longtime target of President Trump&#8217;s, former FBI director James Comey.
James Comey has been on President Trump&#8217;s so-called target list for a very long time, going all the way back to when President Trump fired him during his first term. He fired him because James Comey almost certainly bootstrapped into the press the so-called Steele dossier. He promoted the Trump/Russia collusion hoax. He was deeply involved in every aspect of that — up to and including the use of the Steele dossier — in documents that were presented directly to President Trump, which was then used as an excuse by the media to push the Steele dossier, a compendium of lies about President Trump, into public view.
There have been open questions about whether James Comey, over the intervening years in which he testified repeatedly in front of Congress, among others, had actually committed perjury.
It is a very, very, very short indictment, a page and a half maximum. It accuses Comey by stating he “did willfully and knowingly make a materially false, fictitious, and fraudulent statement in a matter within the jurisdiction of the legislative branch of the Government of the United States, by falsely stating to a U.S. Senator during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing that he, James B. Comey Jr., had not ‘authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports’ regarding an FBI investigation concerning” President Trump.
The indictment continues, “That statement was false, because, as James B. Comey Jr. then and there knew, he in fact had authorized PERSON 3 to serve as an anonymous source in news reports regarding an FBI investigation concerning” Trump.
The allegation is that there was a person lower down at the FBI who leaked to the press details involving the investigation into President Trump, and it is suggested that the person was authorized by Comey illegally to do that, and Comey subsequently lied about it. Or, if he had the authority to authorize the leak, he lied about it.
That lie is count one, which is the perjury charge. Count two is obstruction of a congressional proceeding, saying then on that same date, based on that same testimony, Comey did “corruptly endeavor to influence, obstruct, and impede the due and proper exercise of the power of inquiry under which an investigation was being had before the Senate Judiciary Committee by making false and misleading statements before that committee.”

That is the entirety of the indictment. It is very specific. It is presumably about one or two lines in his testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The reason it&#8217;s being brought so quickly is because there&#8217;s a five-year statute of limitations on perjury charges. Comey’s testimony was September 30, 2020. It is now September 26, 2025, so we are about to expire on that statute of limitations.
It appears from much of the public information that this isn&#8217;t a particularly well-predicated indictment, and the indictment itself is quite weak and that it&#8217;s unlikely to survive in court.
Many of the things mentioned for the possibility of indictment of Comey are immoral and display ethics much worse than this.
But that&#8217;s not what he&#8217;s being indicted for.
At the end of the day, the indictment that&#8217;s left is pretty simple. Comey either lied about leaking to The New York Times in a tantrum because he was getting fired or he didn&#8217;t.
James Comey has decided to do what no one should ever do when hit with an indictment, which is to go directly on camera and talk. First rule of lawyering: Tell your client to shut the hell up.
But Comey <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/09/25/defiant-comey-video-defense-donald-trump-00581806">publicly stated</a>: 
<blockquote>My family and I have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump, but we couldn&#8217;t imagine ourselves living any other way. We will not live on our knees. And you shouldn&#8217;t either. Somebody that I love dearly, recently said that fear is the tool of a tyrant. And she&#8217;s right. But I&#8217;m not afraid. And I hope you&#8217;re not either. I hope instead you are engaged, you are paying attention, and you will vote like your beloved country depends upon it, which it does. My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system, and I&#8217;m innocent. So let&#8217;s have a trial. And keep the faith.</blockquote>
He is simply the worst. Such a self-aggrandizing ridiculous figure.
This person had brought our country to the brink — in terms of the Justice Department, the FBI — for basically a decade, and it turns out he was one of the most ridiculous figures in the history of American public service. Truly a ridiculous figure, not only blowing the Hillary Clinton investigation, but blowing the Donald Trump investigation, manipulating the release, effectively, of the Steele dossier, and then using his perch as the guy who got fired by Donald Trump in order to launch salvos at Donald Trump over and over and over again, while walking through the forest and taking selfies of himself, or walking on the beach and taking pictures of shells on the beach, saying, “86 Donald Trump.”

So don&#8217;t mistake my questions about the indictment, that I somehow believe that James Comey is deserving of tremendous sympathy. I do not think that James Comey is worthy of tremendous sympathy. He was an awful director of the FBI, a joke of a public figure, and his “I&#8217;m standing up to authority. I am the hero standing in the breach” posturing is silly.
He&#8217;s just a silly, silly person. That doesn&#8217;t speak to whether the criminal indictment that is being brought here is weak or strong.
We&#8217;ll see what the underlying evidence looks like on the face of it.
But as far as personal sympathy for James Comey?
The guy is a schmuck.
