The FBI Assistant Special Agent who insisted that the attack in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/new-orleans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New Orleans</a> on New Years’ Day — in which Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, rammed his truck into a group of celebrants, killing 15 and injuring dozens of people — was not a terrorist attack, has reportedly been reassigned.
“The city of New Orleans was impacted by a terrorist attack,” New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell said. But Duncan, who was in charge of the investigation, initially stated, “We&#8217;ll be taking over the investigative lead for this event. This is not a terrorist event. What it is right now is there are improvised explosives devices that was found and we are working on confirming if this is a viable device or not.”

The FBI released a <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/news/press-releases/fbi-statement-on-the-attack-in-new-orleans">statement</a> on New Years’ Day saying:

Two law enforcement officers were injured and transported to a local hospital. &#8230;
An ISIS flag was located in the vehicle, and the FBI is working to determine the subject&#8217;s potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations. Weapons and a potential IED were located in the subject’s vehicle. Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter. The FBI’s special agent bomb technicians are working with our law enforcement partners to determine if any of these devices are viable, and they will work to render those devices safe. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism. Two bombs in Jabbar’s truck, which did not go off, contained a very rare explosive compound, NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/new-orleans-attack-transmitter-explosive-devices-fire-airbnb-fbi-rcna186223">reported</a>, adding, “The compound, called R-Salt, has never been used in a U.S. or European terrorist attack or incident.”

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/new-orleans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New Orleans</a> Police Department released bodycam footage on Friday that showed Islamic terrorist Shamsud-Din Jabbar firing upon responding police officers after he mowed down people with his truck on Bourbon Street on New Year&#8217;s Day.
Jabbar, a 42-year-old Army veteran from Texas, was shot and killed when officers returned fire. The terrorist killed at least 14 people and wounded dozens more when he sped down Bourbon Street in the early morning hours of New Year&#8217;s Day. Footage taken from the bodycam worn by officer Luis Robles shows him and at least two other officers approaching Jabbar&#8217;s rented truck. Robles and officer Christian Beyer stood by the truck with their guns drawn after Jabbar crashed, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/police-shooting-truck-attack-new-orleans-6e4e5163f331b7aa5f467ee8cb8e8a5a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
One officer yelled, &#8220;Put your hands up&#8221; before gunfire erupted. The bodycam footage showed a flash come from Jabbar&#8217;s gun before the officers ran for cover. Beyer, officer Jacobie Jordan, and Sgt. Nigel Daggs returned fire and killed the terrorist.
New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick called the officers &#8220;national heroes&#8221; and said they responded to the threat according to procedures.
“Officers are trained for shoot scenarios like that — they’re highly trained, and that’s what you saw. These are split-second decisions,” Kirkpatrick said.
“All officers are faced with ‘shoot, don’t shoot.’ And this was clearly within the law and clearly, solidly within policy,” she added.
Daggs is a 21-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department while Beyer and Jordan have been with the department for nearly two years. Jordan and officer Joseph Rodrigue were wounded in the shootout and have since been released from the hospital, NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/new-orleans-police-release-bodycam-footage-shootout-bourbon-street-att-rcna187137" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.

Authorities are still investigating the attack, and Kilpatrick said more bodycam footage will be released in the future. Officials are also looking into the security measures that were in place to protect people who were ringing in the New Year. Despite owning portable steel barriers that are often used to block off streets during large events, the city did not use any of the steel barriers to block off Bourbon Street during the New Year&#8217;s Day celebration. Jabbar accessed the bustling street by driving past a police car that was parked to block it off.

Kilpatrick said last week that she didn&#8217;t know about the steel barriers in the city&#8217;s possession.
“I didn’t know about them, but we have them,” Kirkpatrick told reporters, according to <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/01/03/us/bourbon-street-barricades-new-orleans/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a>. “And so we have been able now to put them out.”
Last week, the FBI <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-orleans-terrorist-visited-city-twice-before-attack-filmed-bourbon-street-with-meta-glasses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">revealed</a> footage of the terrorist placing two IEDs on Bourbon Steet just over an hour before his attack. Jabbar hid the IEDs in coolers, but they weren&#8217;t detonated during the attack. Authorities found a transmitter to detonate the IEDs in the terrorist&#8217;s truck along with an ISIS flag.
Jabbar recently became radicalized. In a video he recorded in the rented pickup truck on his way to carry out the attack, Jabbar said, “I wanted to record this message for my family. I wanted you to know that I joined ISIS earlier this year,” according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/04/us/new-orleans-attack-shamsud-din-jabbar-isis.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>. In the video, Jabbar added that he considered killing his family members so they could “witness the killing of the apostates.”

The 42-year-old man behind the terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year&#8217;s Day visited the city at least twice in recent months and used Meta smart glasses to film Bourbon Street — where he drove a truck into a crowd of pedestrians, killing 14 people.
FBI New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Lyonel Myrthil said on Sunday that Shamsud-Din Jabbar of Houston stayed at a rental home for a few days beginning on October 30 and then revisited the city on November 10, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/05/us/new-orleans-attack/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. During his trip to New Orleans in late October, Jabbar rode a bike on Bourbon Street and used Meta smart glasses to record and plan his attack, according to the FBI.
On Sunday, the FBI also revealed new footage of the terrorist placing two IEDs on Bourbon Steet just over an hour before his attack. Jabbar hid the IEDs in coolers. One of the coolers was dragged a block by “someone on Bourbon Street, who we have no reason to believe was involved,&#8221; according to Myrthil. The FBI reiterated that it believes Jabbar acted alone.

After driving his rented Ford pickup truck through Bourbon Street, Jabbar got into a shootout with police officers and was killed. The terrorist, who pledged allegiance to ISIS, was wearing the Meta smart glasses when he died, and officers found a transmitter to detonate the IEDs in the truck. Jabbar reportedly did not activate the smart glasses during his attack. <a href="https://www.ray-ban.com/usa/ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Meta smart glasses</a> can record videos, make calls, send texts, and answer questions through Meta AI. The smart glasses typically cost between $300 and $400.
Before carrying out his attack, Jabbar set fire to his rental home, a move authorities believe was meant to &#8220;hide evidence of his crimes&#8221; and potentially distract first responders before he drove through the crowd gathered on Bourbon Street. The FBI is looking into multiple trips Jabbar took in recent years, including a trip to Cairo, Egypt, from June 22 to July 3, 2023, and a trip to Ontario, Canada, from July 10 to July 13, 2023.

“Our agents are getting answers as to where he went, who he met with, and how those trips may or may not tie into his actions here in our city of New Orleans,” Myrthil <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/01/05/new-orleans-attack-smart-glasses/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran, recently became radicalized. Illegal aliens originating from countries were ISIS operates will rarely ever have information in any kind of database that connects them to terrorism because many of them have little-to-no infrastructure to track terrorist suspects. Also, even if the countries had the information, many of them would likely not want to share it with the United States because they view the U.S. as an enemy state.

Another imam of a mosque near the home of the suspected ISIS member behind the New Year’s Day terrorist attack in New Orleans went on an anti-Semitic rant this summer where he accused Jews of “creating havoc everywhere.”
Fifteen people were killed and 35 were injured when Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, rammed a white pickup truck through a crowd in a blocked-off area of the French Quarter before opening fire. Jabbar, who is an American citizen and Army veteran and was in possession of an ISIS flag, was killed by law enforcement at the scene. 
The Houston Masjid Bilal, which is affiliated with the Islamic Society of Greater Houston (ISGH), is located close to Jabbar’s home.
In a video shared and partially translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, Imam M. ElFarooqui delivered a sermon at the mosque in August 2024, where he spoke about a group of Jews who were forbidden by Allah to fish on Saturday, and instead used trenches to catch the fish passively.

MEMRI shared another video on Thursday of the mosque’s Imam Eiad Soudan going on an anti-Semitic tirade where he explains why he thinks Hitler killed Jews.
“Why does the whole world want them to stay in Palestine? Because if they don’t stay in Palestine, they will go back to their countries,” and “they like to take control of the economy, everywhere they go…That is why the other countries don’t want them back.”
“Until this guy Hitler, with the nice mustache, came to power, he became empowered and we all know what he did. By the way, Hitler hated the Israelites so bad because of the economy thing, they were in control of the economy.”

Shortly after the attack, Houston Masjid Bilal <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-orleans-terrorists-hometown-mosque-tells-members-to-refer-inquiries-to-cair">discouraged</a> its members from talking to the media, and said “if approached by the FBI and a response is necessary, please refer to CAIR and ISGH.”
The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/muslim-american-group-that-celebrated-hamas-attack-hopes-to-have-40-members-in-congress-in-10-years">previously reported</a> that CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad said he was “happy to see” Gazans “breaking the siege and throwing down the shackles of their own land” on October 7, the day Hamas massacred and kidnapped Israeli civilians. Awad added that Israel does not have the right to self-defense.
A CAIR spokesperson told The Daily Wire that CAIR has not yet assumed an official role of handling inquiries for Houston Masjid Bilal.
ISGH condemned the terror attack in a statement and encouraged people with relevant information to speak to authorities.
“This act of terror and pure evil has no place in our community in society,” the statement read. “ISGH encourages anyone with any relevant information to come forward and duly report to law enforcement. ISGH is in contact with authorities and relevant law enforcement agencies are accorded the fullest cooperation needed.”
An FBI spokesperson said <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyzxbQjWwQo">on Thursday</a> that Jabbar uploaded five videos online detailing his plans for terrorism and expressing support for ISIS.
“Jabbar explains that he originally planned to harm his family and friends but was concerned the news headlines would not focus on the quote ‘war between the believers and the disbelievers,’” the FBI Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia said. “He states that he joined ISIS before this summer.”
The Islamic Society of Greater Houston did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Middle East Media Research Institute shared a video on Thursday of Masjid Bilal’s Imam, Eiad Soudan, going on an anti-Semitic tirade where he explains why he thinks Hitler killed Jews.
“Why does the whole world want them to stay in Palestine? Because if they don’t stay in Palestine, they will go back to their countries,” and “they like to take control of the economy, everywhere they go…That is why the other countries don’t want them back.”

An FBI spokesperson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyzxbQjWwQo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on Thursday said</a> that Jabbar posted five videos online about his terrorism plans and his support for ISIS.
“Jabbar explains that he originally planned to harm his family and friends but was concerned the news headlines would not focus on the quote ‘war between the believers and the disbelievers,&#8217;” the FBI Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia said. “He states that he joined ISIS before this summer.”

Raia said the FBI believes Jabbar acted alone, renting a Ford F-150 in Houston before driving to New Orleans on the 31st. Two functional IEDs were found in coolers near the attack site, and authorities are investigating three recovered phones and two laptops linked to Jabbar.
“Whether you know Jabbar personally, worked with him, served in the military, or saw him in New Orleans or Texas, we need to talk to you,” he said. “You may not think you have relevant information, but what you know could tie in to one of our investigative leads.”
CAIR told The Daily Wire that they have not yet assumed an official role of handling inquiries for Houston Masjid Bilal, but strongly condemned the terror attack in a statement.
“We join the New Orleans Muslim community in extending our condolences to the families of those killed in the horrific, senseless and infuriating Bourbon Street attack,” CAIR wrote in a statement. “May God comfort the families of the victims, heal the injured and protect humanity from those who dare to commit such cowardly acts of mass violence.”
It added that Jabbar had a history of drunk driving, spousal abuse, and allegedly plotted to kill his family before “experiencing dreams telling him to join Daesh (ISIS).”
“[H]is crime is the latest example of why cruel, merciless, bottom-feeding extremist groups have been rejected by the overwhelming majority of the Muslim world – from Islamic scholars, to mosques, to organizations, and to individual Muslims,” CAIR added.
A spokesperson was unable to confirm if Jabbar was a member of the mosque.
The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/muslim-american-group-that-celebrated-hamas-attack-hopes-to-have-40-members-in-congress-in-10-years" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously reported</a> that CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad said he was “happy to see” Gazans “breaking the siege and throwing down the shackles of their own land” on October 7, the day Hamas massacred over a thousand Israeli civilians. He added that Israel does not have the right to self-defense.
The Biden administration <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-scrambles-to-distance-itself-from-cair-after-shocking-anti-semitic-statements" target="_blank" rel="noopener">distanced itself</a> from Awad following the remarks and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/08/us/politics/white-house-cair-nihad-awad.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">removed</a> CAIR as a partner from a White House fact sheet for its National Strategy to Counter Anti-Semitism.
On October 7, as Hamas was still actively attacking Israeli communities, CAIR’s official X <a href="https://x.com/CAIRNational/status/1710758201358966893" target="_blank" rel="noopener">account posted</a> its “support for the Palestinian people’s right to freedom and calling for an end to the Israeli occupation.”
The post blamed Israel for Hamas’ attack, claiming the Jewish state “sparks the deadly violence that we see again and again, including today.” The thread on X concluded by calling on the U.S., and Arab and Muslim governments to “exert maximum pressure on the Israeli government” to “respect Palestinian human rights and end the occupation,” despite the attackers coming from Gaza which Israel withdrew from in 2005.
The <a href="https://www.adl.org/resources/backgrounder/council-american-islamic-relations-cair" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anti-Defamation League</a> notes that other CAIR leaders have made anti-Semitic remarks, including CAIR’s San Francisco Bay Area Executive Director, Zahra Billoo, who once declared that “Zionists” are “your enemies,” warning followers to “pay attention” to “Zionist synagogues,” Hillels, and Jewish federations. After October 7, Billoo said the violence was the world “witnessing decolonization.”
Hussam Ayloush, CEO and Executive Director of CAIR Greater Los Angeles Area once said Israel does not have a right to defend itself, and <a href="https://www.memri.org/reports/cair-la-director-hussam-ayloush-november-2023-islamic-society-orange-county-event-israel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asserted</a> that “Israel should be attacked.”
Similarly, on October 7 and 9, Zainab Chaudry, CAIR’s Director of Maryland Outreach, <a href="https://www.adl.org/resources/backgrounder/council-american-islamic-relations-cair" target="_blank" rel="noopener">referred</a> to Hamas’ attack as an “uprising” against “colonizers” and called Hamas terrorists “Palestinian freedom fighters.” In November, Abdullah Jaber, Executive Director, CAIR Florida, stated that Israeli Jews are not followers of “Abraham, Moses, or Jesus.”

Louisiana Republican Gov. Jeff Landry said on Thursday that he&#8217;s &#8220;convinced&#8221; New Orleans is &#8220;safe&#8221; after a terrorist with an ISIS flag drove a truck through a crowded Bourbon Street on New Year&#8217;s Day, killing at least 15 people and wounding dozens more.
In an appearance on &#8220;<a href="https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/new-orleans-bourbon-street-terror-attack-01-02-25">Fox &amp; Friends</a>&#8221; Thursday morning, Landry was asked if he is concerned about more potential threats to New Orleans after Wednesday&#8217;s terror attack carried out by 42-year-old Texas native and Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar. As New Orleans prepares to host the Sugar Bowl on Thursday afternoon after the game was postponed due to the terrorist attack, Landry <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/new-orleans-bourbon-street-terror-attack-01-02-25" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> it&#8217;s important for the city to go on without living &#8220;in fear.&#8221;
&#8220;I think one of the most important things is to make sure that each one of those victims, did not die in vain. All of them had come to the city in order to enjoy the city, in order to enjoy some entertainment and ring in the new year,&#8221; the governor said.
&#8220;Y&#8217;all had a guest earlier who was an eyewitness, who said the same thing is that: We can&#8217;t live in fear. We need to be able to live our lives,&#8221; he added. &#8220;And what we plan to do is ensure that as we remember those folks, that we put New Orleans back in a position where people can come and have a good time. We believe that the city – I&#8217;m convinced that the city is safe.&#8221;
Landry was criticized Wednesday night for posting a picture of himself with a group of people at a prime rib restaurant in New Orleans. The governor wrote, &#8220;Ate dinner tonight in New Orleans. Proud to be a part of this incredibly resilient city. See everyone at the game tomorrow!&#8221;

The governor&#8217;s comments on Thursday morning came after Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill also told Fox News that she believes authorities have secured the city, but added that she would have delayed the Sugar Bowl until Friday.
&#8220;I do feel like the city is secure,&#8221; Murrill said. &#8220;But, you know, we have 16 people who are dead. Their families are grieving. We have at least 10 more that are clinging to life in the hospital. And, you know, I think that there&#8217;s a certain degree of respect that we owe to the dead and to their families and the victims, and to acknowledge and recognize that this is an open investigation into a terrorist event.&#8221;
Murrill added that the FBI has not provided her office with much information. The Sugar Bowl game between Georgia and Notre Dame was initially scheduled to kick off at 8:45 p.m. ET on Wednesday and now has a scheduled start time of 4:00 p.m. ET on Thursday.
New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said that &#8220;hundreds&#8221; of law enforcement officers will line city streets for the Sugar Bowl.
&#8220;We are staffing up at the same level if not more so than we were prepared for Super Bowl,&#8221; Kilpatrick added.
FBI Assistant Special Agent In Charge Alethea Duncan said on Wednesday that the agency does &#8220;not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible,&#8221; adding, “We are aggressively running down every lead, including those of his known associates. That’s why we need the public’s help.”

In a post to Truth Social on Wednesday night, Trump slammed the Justice Department and the FBI, saying that they had focused their energy on investigating the Democrats&#8217; political opponents while failing to protect Americans. His comments also came after a Tesla Cybertruck was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cybertruck-explosion-at-trump-hotel-was-intentional-rented-from-same-company-as-new-orleans-truck" target="_blank" rel="noopener">believed</a> to be intentionally detonated in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. 
“Our Country is a disaster, a laughing stock all over the World! This is what happens when you have OPEN BORDERS, with weak, ineffective, and virtually nonexistent leadership,” Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/113757022203490348">said</a>. “The DOJ, FBI, and Democrat state and local prosecutors have not done their job. They are incompetent and corrupt, having spent all of their waking hours unlawfully attacking their political opponent, ME, rather than focusing on protecting Americans from the outside and inside violent SCUM that has infiltrated all aspects of our government, and our Nation itself.”

The USA is breaking down — A violent erosion of Safety, National Security, and Democracy is taking place all across our Nation,” Trump said. “Only strength and powerful leadership will stop it. Former Princeton football player Martin &#8216;Tiger&#8217; Bech was among the 15 killed in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-no-one-should-jump-to-conclusions-about-isis-terror-attack" target="_blank" rel="noopener">terror attack</a> early Wednesday morning when a 42-year-old man plowed a truck into pedestrians celebrating the New Year in New Orleans&#8217; French Quarter.
Bech, 27, died in the hospital shortly after the attack unfolded. Law enforcement identified the suspect as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen who had lived in Texas and died after a shootout with police. Investigators said that Jabbar had an ISIS flag in his vehicle and posted social media videos indicating he was inspired by the Islamic terror group. 
While authorities have not revealed the victims, family members have come forward to mourn their loved ones. 
&#8220;Love you always brother! You inspired me everyday now you get to be with me in every moment. I got this family T, don’t worry. This is for us,” Bech’s younger brother Jack <a href="https://x.com/jackbech7/status/1874538314138542472" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> on social media. 
Bech played wide receiver for the Princeton Tigers from 2016 to 2018. He had 53 receptions for 825 yards and three touchdowns, earned honors as a kick returner, and won two Ivy League championships.

Another victim was identified as Kareem Badawi, a student at the University of Alabama. 
“I learned today that Kareem Badawi, one of our students at The University of Alabama, was killed in the terrorist attack in New Orleans,” University President Stuart Bell said. “I grieve alongside family and friends of Kareem in their heartbreaking loss.”
Nikyra Dedeaux, an 18-year-old from Mississippi who wanted to become a nurse, was also killed, according to her mother. 
&#8220;I just want to see my baby,&#8221; Melissa Dedeaux <a href="https://www.wwltv.com/article/news/crime/bourbon-street-attack/mississippi-teen-killed-bourbon-street-attack-sweet-loving/289-dac7297e-5373-4192-9b4c-55cd5d93fd09" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> local Louisiana news outlets. &#8220;She was the sweetest person. She would give you anything, anything.&#8221;
Other victims <a href="https://www.fox8live.com/2025/01/02/six-bourbon-street-terror-attack-victims-identified/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">included</a> 37-year-old Reggie Hunter of Baton Rouge, Nicole Perez, and 21-year-old Hubert Gauthreaux.
New Orleans Coroner Dwight McKenna <a href="https://x.com/OmarJimenez/status/1874585773284134952" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Wednesday that the full list of victims would be released once autopsies were completed and every family was notified.  
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that unfolded in the French Quarter,” he said. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected.”

Jabbar was killed after he got out of the vehicle and opened fire on law enforcement officers.
&#8220;The FBI also reported to me that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by ISIS, expressing a desire to kill, a desire to kill,&#8221; Biden said during the press conference.
&#8220;The ISIS flag was found in his vehicle, which he rented to conduct this attack,&#8221; Biden continued. &#8220;Possible explosives were found in the vehicle as well, and more explosives were found nearby.&#8221;
Despite acknowledging that Jabbar, who recently had converted to Islam, was inspired by ISIS, Biden declared just moments later that &#8220;no one should jump to conclusions.&#8221;

President-elect Donald Trump said in a statement earlier in the day that the attack was an “act of pure evil.”
“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true,” Trump said in a post on social media. “The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before.”
“Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department,” he continued. “The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!”
