A federal appeals court on Thursday struck down the Biden administration-backed “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/net-neutrality" target="_blank" rel="noopener">net neutrality</a>” regulations implemented last year by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). 
The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals <a href="https://www.opn.ca6.uscourts.gov/opinions.pdf/25a0002p-06.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled</a> 3-0 against the FCC’s recent order that said Broadband Internet Service Providers must follow net neutrality rules because they are a &#8220;telecommunications service.” Net neutrality rules block broadband providers from varying speeds or blocking connections to third-party websites
In a 26-page decision, Judge Richard Griffin wrote that the FCC “lacks the statutory authority to impose its desired net-neutrality policies” because broadband providers offer an “information service” and are not a telecommunications service under federal law. 
Griffin said that because broadband providers are an information service they are not “not subject to common-carrier regulations.”
“For the reasons that follow, we hold that Broadband Internet Service Providers offer an information service and that mobile broadband is a private mobile service,” he wrote. “Therefore, the FCC exceeded its statutory authority by issuing the Safeguarding Order.”
The court&#8217;s decision came after the FCC reinstated “net neutrality” policies in April 2024, which several broadband providers challenged. 
In response, Democratic FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel called for Congress to implement net neutrality regulations. 
“Consumers across the country have told us again and again that they want an internet that is fast, open, and fair,” Rosenworcel said. “With this decision it is clear that Congress now needs to heed their call, take up the charge for net neutrality, and put open internet principles in federal law.”
FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, whom President-elect Donald Trump has selected as the next chair of the commission, praised the court&#8217;s decision, calling it a &#8220;win&#8221; for the country. He said the regulations were part of the Biden administration’s work “to expand the government’s control over every feature of the Internet ecosystem.”
“I am pleased that the appellate court invalidated President Biden’s Internet power grab by striking down these unlawful Title II regulations,” he <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-408580A1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “But the work to unwind the Biden Administration’s regulatory overreach will continue. I welcome the chance to advance a policy agenda that will deliver great results for the American people.”

Two undersea internet cables appear to have been severed in Europe this week as officials warn of potential Russian sabotage against Western infrastructure as it looks for an advantage in its war against Ukraine.
A nearly 750-mile cable connecting Germany and Finland, which just joined NATO last year, stopped working during the early morning hours on Monday.
&#8220;We are deeply concerned about the severed undersea cable connecting Finland and Germany in the Baltic Sea,&#8221; the two countries <a href="https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/en/newsroom/news/-/2685132">said</a> in a joint statement. &#8220;The fact that such an incident immediately raises suspicions of intentional damage speaks volumes about the volatility of our times.&#8221;
The countries said that an investigation was already underway and warned that Europe&#8217;s security was &#8220;not only under threat from Russia‘s war of aggression against Ukraine, but also from hybrid warfare by malicious actors.&#8221;
&#8220;Safeguarding our shared critical infrastructure is vital to our security and the resilience of our societies,&#8221; they added.
A 135-mile undersea internet cable stopped working on Sunday that connected Lithuania and Sweden, which just joined NATO earlier this year.
Lithuania&#8217;s Telia Lietuva Chief Technology Officer Andrius Šemeškevičius said: “The cable was cut on Sunday morning, at around 10:00.&#8221;
Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Sweden&#8217;s minister of civil defence, <a href="https://www.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/19/2416006/undersea-cable-between-lithuania-and-sweden-damaged-telia">told</a> the media on Monday that it was critical that authorities quickly learn why the two cables were no longer working.
There was no official indication that sabotage was to blame as investigators still worked to locate the exact area where the cables were cut.
However, given the rugged design of the cables, human activity was almost certainly to blame for the damage, experts said. The fact that two separate cables were damaged in the span of less than 24 hours — each of which connected two different NATO members — raised fears of sabotage.

If you&#8217;re not a cryptocurrency person, I can feel your eye rolls from here. &#8220;Crypto again, here we go!&#8221; Yes, I know. Bitcoin has been around forever.
That&#8217;s not what I&#8217;m talking about though.
Web3 is an idea for the future of the internet where the entire web is built on blockchains, decentralizing it and putting control back into the hands of the people rather than Big Tech companies. The term Web3 — or Web 3.0 — began floating around in 2013 and refers to the next phase of the World Wide Web after Web 2.0, the age of interactive websites that started around 2004, and the original Web, which consisted of lots of read-only websites.
So what would a blockchain internet look like? What is a blockchain anyway?
A blockchain is a chain or “ledger” of digital data that is decentralized, meaning it is spread across many different computers, often even across different countries.
The big attraction of the blockchain is that it does not need a centralized administrator like a server in a specific location. Google&#8217;s servers are located in Oregon, Arizona, Texas, and several other places. When Google decides to do something, users can&#8217;t stop the company because it controls the servers.

Big Tech&#8217;s outsized control over internet traffic has long been a bipartisan concern. Republicans and Democrats in Congress have <a href="https://www.warren.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/warren-graham-unveil-bipartisan-bill-to-rein-in-big-tech" target="_blank" rel="noopener">teamed</a> up on bills to reign in giants like Google, Apple, and Facebook.
Online censorship, misinformation, and election interference concerns marred the last few presidential elections. Data breaches have exposed people&#8217;s personal and financial information. Meanwhile, Big Tech companies gobble up revenue and buy out their competitors, making it nearly impossible to challenge them in the free market.
Blockchain technology could potentially solve some of the problems Big Tech poses, but so far, it hasn&#8217;t quite figured out how to achieve that higher purpose.
Unlike the Big Tech corporations, blockchains are run by the community. Each time someone adds something to the blockchain, the ledger data is updated on each “node,” each computer using the blockchain. A majority of users agree to verify the changes, and the blockchain keeps going. Each “block” on the blockchain contains the new data, a timestamp, and information about the previous block, so every addition to the blockchain is permanent and cannot be reversed without changing every single block after it.
There&#8217;s no third party needed (think traditional banks), and there&#8217;s no CEO in a corner office somewhere calling the shots. This is new and exciting because it means the builders and users of blockchains can record things on the blockchain (like financial transactions) without the fear that their additions could be easily erased or changed.
All of this also means that hacking a blockchain is extremely difficult because you would have to control at least 51% of the computers using the blockchain.
Today, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, and Solana are the most popular uses of blockchain technology. NFTs — non-fungible tokens, essentially digital collector&#8217;s art — are also traded furiously on blockchains. There are also more gimmicky trends like video games built on blockchains that reward people with cryptocurrency.
However, Web3 enthusiasts have a grander idea for the future of blockchains where they are about more than just making money or goofing off — they could someday be used for just about everything we already do on the internet and more.
Social media platforms can be built on top of blockchains. People have already <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/5-blockchain-based-social-media-platforms-to-know" target="_blank" rel="noopener">done</a> this. Banking on blockchains can be more efficient, secure, and transparent without the expensive fees. Stablecoins (cryptocurrencies like USD Coin, which is always redeemable for the same amount in dollars) are working on doing this now.
There are likely things blockchains can do that we haven&#8217;t even thought of yet because our current internet isn&#8217;t able to do them.
Web3 is still a pretty hazy idea. Yes, blockchains exist and cryptocurrency is everywhere now, but for now, we&#8217;ll just have to wait and see if the grander vision for this technology pans out.

On Tuesday, the Democrat-led <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate</a> passed <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/1409/text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">legislation</a> that seeks to shore up protections for children on the internet. In a bipartisan display, 91 senators <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1182/vote_118_2_00221.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted in favor</a> of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Action (COPPA) 2.0. Three senators opposed the bills while six members did not cast votes.
&#8220;The Senate kept its promise to parents and passed the Kids Online Safety Act &#8216;KOSA&#8217; and the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act &#8216;COPPA 2.0,'&#8221; Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) <a href="https://x.com/SenSchumer/status/1818331404247167100" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a post to X. &#8220;The most important update to federal laws protecting kids on the internet in decades The House must pass them now.&#8221;
KOSA would &#8220;require platforms to enable the strongest privacy settings by default, force platforms to prevent and mitigate specific dangers to minors, provide parents and educators new controls to help protect children, and require independent audits and research into social media companies,&#8221; according to a <a href="https://www.blackburn.senate.gov/2024/7/blackburn-blumenthal-celebrate-senate-passage-of-the-bipartisan-kids-online-safety-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a> from the office of Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), who introduced the bill alongside Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT).
Blackburn&#8217;s website <a href="https://www.blackburn.senate.gov/kosa-33db52ce-5d69-11ee-8c99" target="_blank" rel="noopener">features a breakdown of the bill</a> that further states it would create &#8220;a duty for online platforms to prevent and mitigate specific dangers to minors, including promotion of suicide, eating disorders, substance abuse, sexual exploitation, and advertisements for certain illegal products (e.g. tobacco and alcohol).&#8221; It also says KOSA would require &#8220;social media platforms to provide minors with options to protect their information, disable addictive product features, and opt out of personalized algorithmic recommendations.&#8221;
The press release noted that Blackburn and Blumenthal &#8220;first introduced the Kids Online Safety Act in February 2022 following reporting by the Wall Street Journal and after spearheading a series of five subcommittee hearings with social media companies and advocates on the repeated failures by tech giants to protect kids on their platforms.&#8221;

Bill Cassidy (R-LA) said COPPA 2.0, which Cassidy and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) unveiled to update the <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/105th-congress/senate-bill/2326#:~:text=Children's%20Online%20Privacy%20Protection%20Act%20of%201998%20%2D%20Directs%20the%20Federal,age%2016%2C%20including%20by%20obtaining" target="_blank" rel="noopener">original COPPA bill</a> from 1998 that directed the Federal Trade Commission to enforce online privacy for minors, would &#8220;[b]uild on COPPA by prohibiting internet companies from collecting personal information from users who are 13 to 16 years old without their consent&#8221; and &#8220;[b]an targeted advertising to children and teens.&#8221;

COPPA 2.0 would also &#8220;[r]evise COPPA’s &#8216;actual knowledge&#8217; standard to close the loophole that allows covered platforms to ignore kids and teens on their site; Create an &#8216;Eraser Button&#8217; by requiring companies to permit users to eliminate personal information from a child or teen when technologically feasible; and Establish data minimization rules to prohibit the excessive collection of children and teens’ data,&#8221; the press release added.
Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Ron Wyden (D-OR) comprised the trio who rejected the legislation. They each <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4800884-senate-approves-bills-online-children/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">offered explanations</a> for opposing KOSA in particular, raising concerns over free speech and censorship.
&#8220;Government mandates and censorship will not protect children online,&#8221; Paul <a href="https://x.com/RandPaul/status/1818319329349214480" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a post to X</a>, adding, &#8220;The internet may pose new problems but there is an age old solution to this issue. Free minds &amp; parental guidance are the best means to protect our children online.&#8221; In a <a href="https://x.com/SenMikeLee/status/1818341290808865015" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post to X</a> of his own, Lee said he was &#8220;proud to have introduced the SCREEN Act, which would require pornographic websites to adopt real age-verification for visitors,&#8221; but &#8220;it was blocked from consideration and did not receive a vote&#8221; when he offered the legislation as an amendment to KOSA.
Wyden <a href="https://www.wyden.senate.gov/news/press-releases/wyden-statement-on-the-kids-online-safety-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> he feared KOSA &#8220;could be used to sue services that offer privacy-enhancing technologies like encryption or anonymity features that are essential to young people’s ability to communicate securely and privately without being spied on by predators online&#8221; and took &#8220;seriously concerns voiced by the American Civil Liberties Union, Fight for the Future, and LGBTQ+ teens and advocates that a future MAGA administration could still use this bill to pressure companies to censor gay, trans and reproductive health information.&#8221;
The bills now head to the GOP-controlled House, which is in recess for the remainder of the summer. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) <a href="https://x.com/emrwilkins/status/1815761203861262448?t=E37Sh7ZAmjwO31rQ93FWB" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly told CNBC</a> earlier this month that he loved &#8220;the idea&#8221; behind them. &#8220;We&#8217;ll be looking at the details of the exact legislation, but I suspect it&#8217;ll have a lot of support,&#8221; he added.
President Joe Biden urged the House to quickly pass KOSA. &#8220;While my Administration has taken important steps to address the harms of social media and online platforms, we need action by Congress to protect our kids online and hold Big Tech accountable for the national experiment they are running on our children for profit,&#8221; he said in a <a href="https://x.com/cristina_corujo/status/1818372732565786653" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.

Teens and kids are not the only ones glued to their social media feeds anymore — the vast majority of adults spend time scrolling too.
Data released earlier this year shows that a majority of American adults use some kind of social media, but their habits and preferred platforms are different from younger users.
YouTube and Facebook are both about two decades old now, but they remain the top two platforms among adults.
YouTube is by far the most widely used platform among adults as well as teens. About eight in 10 American adults, 83%, say they have used the video-sharing platform at some point, according to recent <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2024/01/31/americans-social-media-use/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> from the Pew Research Center, which polled more than 5,700 adults between May and September last year.

Facebook is not far behind with a majority of U.S. adults, 68%, saying they use it. By contrast, teens have fled Facebook over the past decade as their parents, relatives, teachers, and other adults have joined. In 2022, only 32% of teens <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2022/08/10/teens-social-media-and-technology-2022/#The-social-media-landscape-has-shifted" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> they had ever used Facebook, down from 71% in 2015.
Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, has attracted about half of adults with 47% saying they use the image-based platform.

About a fifth of adults say they use Twitter, which was recently renamed X and is known for fast-moving discourse especially relating to politics and pop culture. A fifth also say they use Reddit, known for its hyper-specific communities and sometimes NSFW content.
Of course, TikTok has exploded in popularity in recent years, especially among teens and kids, but a third of adults have flocked to the video-sharing platform as well.
TikTok has seen a 12-point spike in adult users since 2021, while the percentages of adults who use YouTube and Facebook, the most popular platforms, have stayed about the same since 2021.
However, about half of TikTok&#8217;s adult users are observers only, meaning they have never posted a video themselves. This includes younger adults aged 18 to 34 — only half have ever posted a video.
Because of this, the vast majority of TikTok&#8217;s content is created by a small share of users. The top 25% of adults on TikTok produce 98% of that group&#8217;s publicly available videos.
The typical adult TikTok user has also left their &#8220;bio&#8221; blank on their account.
More people are now getting their news from TikTok too. Last year, about 14% of adults said they got news regularly from TikTok, more than four times the 3% who said so in 2020.
TikTok&#8217;s pivot to a news source echoes Twitter&#8217;s evolution, which has become many people&#8217;s go-to source for up-to-the-minute news updates.
Communities geared towards adult users, such as parenting content and even X-rated content, have popped up on many of the platforms popular with adults.
Meanwhile among teens, YouTube is the most popular platform with 95% of teens <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2022/08/10/teens-social-media-and-technology-2022/#The-social-media-landscape-has-shifted" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying</a> in 2022 that they use it, followed by TikTok with 67% of teens, Instagram with 62%, and then Snapchat, an app used to send disappearing photos and messages, with 59%.
Teen girls are more likely to use Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, while teen boys are more likely to use Reddit and Twitch, a self-streaming platform often used by video gamers.
The average social media user is also not just on one platform but uses an eye-popping six or seven platforms every month.
Overall, we&#8217;re all scrolling more. Across the globe last year, about 4.9 billion people <a href="https://www.forbes.com/advisor/business/social-media-statistics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">used</a> social media, and that number continues to climb.

Iranian-backed <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/houthis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Houthi</a> terrorists have reportedly destroyed underwater cables between Europe and Asia, causing serious communication disruptions between the two continents.
Israel&#8217;s Globes publication said that the Houthis destroyed four underwater cables in the Red Sea between Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Djibouti in East Africa.
The cables belong to AAE-1, Seacom, EIG and TGN, the report said. The countries that have been the most negatively impacted are the Gulf states and India.
The damaged cables, which cost hundreds of millions of dollars, will take months to repair, and it will likely be difficult for the four companies to find repair firms that would be willing to work in the area because they could be attacked by the Islamic terrorists.
The Houthis have launched at least 48 attacks against merchant vessels in the region over the last four months, impacting approximately 55 countries around the world that depend on commerce passing through the Red Sea.
The attacks on the underwater cables come as the Houthis remain undeterred by President Joe Biden&#8217;s weak response to their terror attacks on shipping vessels, including ships owned by U.S. entities.
The limited responses the Biden administration has deployed against the Houthis have been coalition strikes with the United Kingdom with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-u-k-launch-new-wave-of-strikes-against-iranian-backed-houthi-terrorists" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most recent</a> round of coalition strikes happened late last week when the U.S. and U.K. reportedly struck 18 Houthi targets. Little-to-no footage of any of the strikes has been released to the media.
“The targets included Houthi underground weapons storage facilities, missile storage facilities, one-way attack unmanned aerial systems, air defense systems, radars, and a helicopter,” U.S. Central Command said in a statement. “These strikes are intended to degrade Houthi capability and disrupt their continued reckless and unlawful attacks on international commercial and U.S. and U.K. vessels in the Red Sea, Bab AI-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden.”
The statement highlighted how the Houthi attacks have “disrupted humanitarian aid bound for Yemen, harmed Middle Eastern economies, and caused environmental damage.”
The strikes were not part of the multinational freedom of navigation actions performed under Operation Prosperity Guardian, which is a group of nations that have dedicated resources to protecting merchant vessels that are seeking to use the Suez Canal.

A former Facebook global diversity strategist pled guilty to stealing more than $4 million from the company through an &#8220;elaborate scheme involving fraudulent vendors, fictitious charges, and cash kickbacks,&#8221; federal prosecutors said Tuesday.
Barbara Furlow-Smiles, 38, <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.gand.323491/gov.uscourts.gand.323491.1.0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pled</a> guilty to wire fraud related to the scheme, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Atlanta <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndga/pr/former-global-diversity-executive-facebook-pleads-guilty-defrauding-company-out-more-4?te=1&amp;nl=dealbook&amp;emc=edit_dk_20231213" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement.
Furlow-Smiles led Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs at Facebook between January, 2017 and September, 2021. As Facebook&#8217;s lead strategist and global head of employee resource groups and diversity engagement, Furlow-Smiles was responsible for developing and executing DEI initiatives, operations, and engagement programs, prosecutors said.
She had access to company credit cards and was able to approve invoices and used her position to &#8220;cheat and defraud the company,&#8221; prosecutors said.
Furlow-Smiles linked PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App accounts to her Facebook credit cards and used those accounts to pay friends, relatives, and others for goods and services that were never provided to Facebook, prosecutors said.
She then submitted fraudulent expense reports to hide those charges, falsely claiming that her friends had performed work for Facebook, such as providing swag or marketing.
Those people then paid kickbacks to Furlow-Smiles, sometimes through accounts in her husband&#8217;s and other people&#8217;s names, prosecutors said. Sometimes the kickbacks were paid in cash in person and sometimes through the mail. Cash was even hidden in a t-shirt at one point, prosecutors said. Furlow-Smiles also sometimes told her friends to pay one another to hide the scheme, prosecutors said.
Furlow-Smiles also had Facebook hire vendors operated by her friends, prosecutors said, and she approved fraudulent and inflated invoices to pay the vendors, who then paid her kickbacks.
People who were part of the scheme included friends, relatives, former interns from a prior job, nannies and babysitters, a hair stylist, and her university tutor. She even had Facebook pay for several expenses of other people, including $10,000 to an artist for specialty portraits and more than $18,000 for preschool tuition, according to prosecutors.
&#8220;She used the money to live a luxury lifestyle in California and Georgia,&#8221; prosecutors said.
Her sentencing is scheduled for March 19.
It is not clear whether any of the other people involved in the scheme will be charged. Prosecutors said most of the people were not aware that the money was coming from Facebook.
Meta, Facebook&#8217;s parent company, cooperated with the investigation, which is being investigated by the FBI.
“This defendant abused a position of a trust as a global diversity executive for Facebook to defraud the company of millions of dollars, ignoring the insidious consequences of undermining the importance of her DEI mission,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan Buchanan.
“Motivated by greed, she used her time to orchestrate an elaborate criminal scheme in which fraudulent vendors paid her kickbacks in cash. She even involved relatives, friends, and other associates in her crimes, all to fund a lavish lifestyle through fraud rather than hard and honest work,” Buchanan said.

Former chair of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fcc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Communications Commission</a> Ajit Pai ripped into plans by his former agency to reintroduce “net neutrality” regulations, saying that they were unnecessary and an “utter waste of time.”
On Tuesday, President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a>’s FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-397235A1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> she would move toward reinstituting net neutrality guidelines that were originally instituted during the Obama administration but repealed during the Trump administration. In a statement sent to The Daily Wire, Pai, who introduced the repeal of “net neutrality” regulations, said that the move was prompted by leftist activists and Big Tech companies.
“The FCC leadership&#8217;s decision to revisit so-called &#8216;net neutrality&#8217; regulations is a complete and utter waste of time. Half a decade ago, we were promised that the end of the Internet was upon us, that broadband providers would block and throttle content, and that consumers would be harmed,” he told The Daily Wire.
Net neutrality regulations have been billed as necessary to make sure that internet service providers (ISPs) did not move to throttle websites that may act as competitors and end paid prioritization. Critics of the regulations warn that they give the government too much power over the internet, especially at a time when the Biden administration has been reprimanded by courts over its work with social media companies to censor information on COVID.
“Today, consumers enjoy higher broadband speeds than ever. More of them than ever before have access to high-speed Internet. They have more options and better prices. And the only entities blocking and throttling what they see and say online are the same Big Tech companies that badgered the Obama FCC into imposing these regulations in the first place,” Pai said.
During her announcement, Rosenworcel said that “net neutrality” regulations were needed to ensure that the internet is &#8220;fast, open, and fair.&#8221; She took aim at the Pai-led FCC, claiming that it was “extreme” and “on the wrong side of history” when it repealed previous “net neutrality” regulations.
In his statement, Pai criticized the FCC for focusing on net neutrality instead of working on improving broadband availability or decreasing robocalls.
“It&#8217;s unfortunate that almost 1,000 days into the Biden Administration, FCC leadership can&#8217;t come up with an accurate map of broadband availability, hasn&#8217;t held a single spectrum auction of its own, hasn&#8217;t improved Wi-Fi, and hasn&#8217;t stemmed the increasing waves of robocalls overwhelming consumers — but is determined to waste enormous time and effort on an issue that matters only to left-wing Beltway activists, Big Tech, and a few (alleged) comedians,” he said.
The decision to reintroduce the regulations came just weeks after the Senate <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/7/23863365/anna-gomez-fcc-commissioner-senate-confirmation-net-neutrality" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted</a> to confirm Anna Gomez, a Biden appointee, to the FCC. The vote now gives Democrats a 3-2 majority on the agency. The agency is expected vote next month on the proposed regulations.
The end of net neutrality regulations in 2017 was met with great concern by media outlets and Democrats, who claimed that the repeal of the regulations would destroy the internet. A CNN headline <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/media/364959-cnn-headline-declares-end-of-the-internet-as-we-know-it-after-net-neutrality/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> that the vote to end net neutrality would “end the internet as we know it” while Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) <a href="https://twitter.com/DrewHolden360/status/1331687277492396035" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> it would be a “road to digital serfdom.”

“Six years ago, we were told by net neutrality activists, Senate Democrats, and certain media outlets that the Internet would end without so-called ‘net neutrality.’ The hysterical predictions never came to pass, and the Internet has thrived without government control — speeds are up, prices are down relative to inflation, and more Americans have access thanks to new network deployments,” Evan Swarztrauber, a former policy advisor to FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr and Pai, told The Daily Wire.
Swarztrauber added that many of the companies supporting net neutrality policies had pushed censorship themselves.
“And ironically, it&#8217;s the Big Tech companies who pushed net neutrality, like Google and Apple, that have been blocking and throttling Americans&#8217; access to information — not Internet service providers,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) denied that his bill to prohibit social media platform <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/tiktok" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TikTok</a> in the United States would affect virtual private networks, also known as VPNs.
The <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/686/text?s=1&amp;r=15" target="_blank" rel="noopener">text</a> of the RESTRICT Act concerned social media users and some technology experts over what appear to be provisions allowing federal officials to severely limit the use of the internet. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo would be enabled by the legislation to “identify, deter, disrupt, prevent, prohibit, investigate, or otherwise mitigate” perceived risks related to communication and information technology services.
The broad language arguably criminalizes the utilization of VPNs, through which internet users can directly access a private computer network, with fines as high as $1 million or prison sentences as long as 20 years if users reach networks in nations such as China and Russia. VPNs are often used to protect data and ensure privacy while using the internet.
Rachel Cohen, the communications director for Warner, said in a statement provided to multiple media outlets that the RESTRICT Act would not criminalize conventional use of the technology.
&#8220;Someone must be engaged in &#8216;sabotage or subversion&#8217; of communications technology in the U.S., causing &#8216;catastrophic effects&#8217; on U.S. critical infrastructure, or &#8216;interfering in, or altering the result&#8217; of a federal election in order for criminal penalties to apply,&#8221; she remarked. &#8220;The bill is squarely aimed at companies like Kaspersky, Huawei, and TikTok that create systemic risks to the United States&#8217; national security, not individual users.”
Critics of the RESTRICT Act noted that the provisions of the bill were sufficiently broad such that officials could construe them to oppose so-called hate speech or otherwise discriminate based on an internet user’s viewpoints. Warner, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, <a href="https://twitter.com/MarkWarner/status/1641170109455814656" target="_blank" rel="noopener">countered</a> on social media that the bill is a “systemic, rules-based approach” to identifying and addressing foreign technology threats rather than an “infringement on free speech.”
Renewed scrutiny of TikTok, which former President Donald Trump considered banning at the end of his term, comes amid increasingly strained relations between the United States and China. President Joe Biden and a number of state officials have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/senate-unanimously-votes-to-ban-tiktok-on-government-devices" target="_blank" rel="noopener">banned</a> the platform from government devices after reports <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tiktoks-parent-company-in-china-planned-to-use-platform-to-track-locations-of-specific-americans-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indicated</a> that employees of ByteDance, the Chinese technology firm which owns TikTok, monitored the locations of specific American users.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Sen. Angus King (I-ME) have meanwhile <a href="https://www.rubio.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2023/2/momentum-grows-to-ban-chinese-owned-tiktok-as-rubio-and-king-reintroduce-bipartisan-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">introduced</a> the ANTI-SOCIAL CCP Act, which specifically grants the commander-in-chief authority to prohibit ByteDance, TikTok, and any of their subsidiaries from conducting operations in the United States. The RESTRICT Act mentions neither ByteDance nor TikTok by name.
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tiktok-ceo-swears-company-is-not-an-agent-of-china" target="_blank" rel="noopener">testified</a> last week before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on the extent to which officials in China maintain authority and influence over TikTok and ByteDance, vowing that the latter is not an “agent of China or any other country.” When pressed by lawmakers, however, Chew <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tiktok-ceo-refuses-to-say-whether-officials-at-chinese-parent-company-helped-him-prepare-for-hearing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">failed</a> to clearly answer whether individuals associated with ByteDance helped him prepare for his testimony and admitted that the attorneys who represent TikTok also represent ByteDance.
“I am well aware that the fact that ByteDance has Chinese founders has prompted concerns that our platform could be used as or become a tool of China or the Chinese Communist Party. There have even been calls to ban us or require divestment,” the executive said. “Divestment does not address the fundamental concerns that I have heard, as a change in ownership would not impose any new restrictions on data flows or access. This is not an issue of nationality.”

A popular video game livestreamer issued an apology after he allegedly paid for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/artificial-intelligence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AI-generated</a> pornography of fellow internet personalities.
Brandon Ewing, who goes by the screen name Atrioc, posted a tearful <a href="https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1723055801" target="_blank" rel="noopener">apology video</a> to his Twitch channel in which he admitted to paying for AI-generated &#8220;deepfake porn&#8221; of fellow streamers Pokimane, QTCinderella, Sweet Anita, and Maya Higa. &#8220;Deepfakes&#8221; have been around for several years now: AI software has also come under fire for generating sexualized images of women, among other illicit material.
The controversy began on Monday, when Atrioc inadvertently opened his browser window; one of the tabs in the browser had nude pictures of female Twitch streamers on it.
In his apology video, Atrioc said he was reading information and learning about artificial intelligence online. He then admitted that he was browsing on PornHub, when he saw an ad for the site and clicked on it. The site was subscription-based, and he paid the subscription in order to access the site. “I got morbidly curious and I clicked something,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It’s gross and I’m sorry&#8230; It’s so embarrassing.” He added that his actions were not a &#8220;pattern of behavior.&#8221;
The streamers whose fake images were posted to the site were incensed at being sexualized online.
&#8220;This story was how I found out that I&#8217;m on this website,&#8221; <a href="https://twitter.com/sweetanita/status/1620143205282103297" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sweet Anita</a> tweeted. &#8220;I literally choose to pass up millions by not going into sex work and some random cheeto encrusted porn addict solicits my body without my consent instead. Don&#8217;t know whether to cry, break stuff or laugh at this point.&#8221;
&#8220;[S]top sexualizing people without their consent,&#8221; <a href="https://twitter.com/pokimanelol/status/1620492032623136768?s=20&amp;t=JBCwj-lTgbsQF_KciGlgog" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pokimane</a> added. &#8220;[T]hat’s it, that’s the tweet.&#8221;

In a second statement posted to <a href="https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1ss80dv" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TwitLonger</a>, Atrioc said that he would help finance the cost of taking down the offending content and the legal fees for affected streamers. In order to dedicate his time fully to the issue, he also announced that he would be stepping away from content creation and OFFBRAND, his content creation studio. &#8220;This will be the last time you hear from me for a while,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;I&#8217;d rather you see my actions. I will try my absolute hardest to combat the damage I caused.&#8221;
The individual behind the deepfake images has taken them all down, and replaced his website with a long apology for creating them in the first place, according to a screenshot of the site shared on <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Destiny/comments/10q0f7t/deep_fake_creator_atrioc_was_subbed_to_on/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reddit</a>.
Deepfake technology, which uses AI to map someone&#8217;s face onto another person&#8217;s body, has been around since at least <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/deepfakes-digitally-altered-video-could-become-paul-bois" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2018</a>. Even porn websites like <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/deepfakes-pornhub-bans-fake-celebrity-porn-videos-paul-bois" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PornHub</a> have banned the practice on the grounds that such videos are non-consensual. The technology has advanced and proliferated much since then, which has only exposed its unsavory parts. The popular AI art software Lensa AI was at the center of controversy in December after <a href="https://jezebel.com/trendy-portrait-app-lensa-is-accused-of-creating-noncon-1849870304" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multiple</a> <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/12/12/1064751/the-viral-ai-avatar-app-lensa-undressed-me-without-my-consent/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> showed that it generated <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/lensa-artificial-intelligence-csem/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nude images</a> of users, even when users offered it modest photos or even headshots.
