Inflation and cost of living are the top issues for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/pennsylvania" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pennsylvania</a> voters headed into Election Day, according to a new poll from the Commonwealth Foundation. 
The survey, taken between September 26-29 of 800 registered voters, found that inflation/cost of living, immigration, and general economic concerns were the top issues for Pennsylvania residents. Across all parties surveyed, 71% said they were worried about their ability to pay for their energy needs. 
“The higher prices people are paying for gasoline, electricity, and other energy across the board are shaping their views as voters look to the impact of these issues on their pocket books as their chief concerns,” Commonwealth Foundation Senior Vice President Erik Telford said during a press call Tuesday. 
Voting in Pennsylvania has already started.
When <a href="https://www.commonwealthfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Common-Ground-in-the-Commonwealth-Q3-2024-Survey-Analysis-.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">surveyed</a> on their top national issues, Pennsylvania voters said inflation/cost of living (20%), immigration/border security (12%), and the economy in general (9%) were most important to them. Abortion, an issue Democrats have focused much of their campaign efforts on, was only the top issue for 5% of those surveyed. 
The poll also found Vice President Kamala Harris with a 50%-46% lead over former President Donald Trump. Her lead was propelled in part by a surge in enthusiasm for Harris among Democratic voters after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, the poll found.
Biden’s popularity in Pennsylvania is still underwater, with just 43% approving of his performance and 55% expressing disapproval. 
More broadly, polls in Pennsylvania show a tight race between Trump and Harris, virtually tied at 48%, according to an <a href="https://election.dailywire.com/?_gl=1*1kgz9fq*_gcl_au*ODEzNzM5OTMyLjE3MjA2MzY3MDc.*_ga*OTUxNjU0OTE2LjE2OTY4ODU4OTM.*_ga_CZKR9ZYKJP*MTcyODQwMDM1Mi4yOTYuMS4xNzI4NDAwMzUzLjU5LjAuMA.." target="_blank" rel="noopener">average</a> of polls. Telford said that the deciding factors in November would be candidate messaging on inflation and energy and turnout among independent voters.

“A key factor will be how well candidates define themselves around financial and economic insecurity issues driving voter behavior,” Telford said. “Candidates and elected officials must remain aware of the economic and financial pressures on individuals and families. Policies that make things worse or threaten their financial futures will get little support.”
In Pennsylvania&#8217;s high-stakes Senate race, incumbent Democratic Senator Bob Casey held a 49%-38% lead over Republican challenger Dave McCormick. Republicans <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/10/06/senate-republican-ad-spending-map-uneven-00182625" target="_blank" rel="noopener">are spending</a> big money backing McCormick, with an estimated $113 million allocated to elect him between Labor Day and Election Day. 
Overall, voters were pessimistic about the direction of Pennsylvania (57%) and the country (68%).

Former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> will head to Vice President Kamala Harris’s home state of California this weekend to rally supporters in the deep blue state with less than a month to go in the presidential race. 
The event will be held on Saturday at the Calhoun Ranch at 5:00 p.m. local time in Coachella, according to Trump&#8217;s campaign. Coachella is in Southern California&#8217;s Coachella Valley, widely known for its annual music and art festival. The announcement indicated that Trump’s remarks will focus on inflation, the cost of living, and the records of Harris, her vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, and California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. 
“Under Kamala Harris and her dangerous Democrat allies like Tim Walz, the notorious ‘California Dream’ has turned into a nightmare for everyday Americans. Since Harris and Biden took office, prices have skyrocketed by nearly 20 percent, leaving Californians grappling with crushing costs,” the campaign said. “Families are struggling to stay afloat, with the average California household losing more than $33,232 since January 2021. Californians are suffocating under rising prices for everything from groceries to housing, thanks to Kamalanomics.”
The announcement also pointed to surging home prices in California, including in cities like San Diego, where the median home price is more than $1 million, and gas prices reached record highs in 2022. 
“This is the future Harris and Walz want for the rest of America — crippling inflation, unaffordable housing, and sky-high gas prices,” the campaign said. “If this is the California Dream, it’s every American&#8217;s worst nightmare. President Trump is the only candidate who can reverse the damage done by Comrade Kamala, and it&#8217;s why Americans will elect him the 47th President of the United States this November.”
Steven Hernandez, the mayor of Coachella, <a href="https://www.kcra.com/article/trump-campaign-rally-coachella-california/62535916" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a> to the news of the rally by criticizing Trump. 
&#8220;The City of Coachella was proud to welcome Senator Bernie Sanders during the 2020 primary election, but news of former President Trump’s upcoming visit has been met very differently,&#8221; Hernandez wrote on Facebook. &#8220;Trump’s attacks on immigrants, women, the LQBTQ community and the most vulnerable among us don’t align with the values of our community. He has consistently expressed disdain for the type of diversity that helps define Coachella. We don’t know why Trump is visiting near Coachella, but we know he wasn’t invited by the people who live here. He ain’t like us.&#8221;

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a conservative, will assist the Secret Service in providing security for the event. He <a href="https://kesq.com/news/2024/10/07/donald-trump-to-host-a-rally-in-coachella-on-saturday-oct-12/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that Hernandez&#8217;s statement was divisive. 
&#8220;Mr. Hernandez, better take a look around, because he obviously was invited by the people that live there and work there, and maybe he&#8217;s going to be in line for an awakening in the future, because this constant divide and this constant rhetoric that we have going on is not good for the country,&#8221; said Bianco, who endorsed Trump earlier this year. Bianco is <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-06-08/riverside-county-sheriff-chad-bianco-is-mulling-a-run-for-governor-in-2026">reportedly</a> considering a run for governor in 2026.
While California is a Democratic stronghold, several key House races in the state could determine control of the chamber.

Co-host Charlamagne tha God and Rye both insisted that Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democrat&#8217;s presidential nominee, has nothing to do with the struggling economy. Rye, in particular, suggested Donalds was lying about his explanation, which was factually true.
&#8220;I would argue we&#8217;re not really thriving right now,&#8221; Donalds said of the current economic climate. &#8220;This inflation, which by the way was brought to us by Kamala Harris, has really slowed people down from being able to excel.&#8221;
&#8220;By Kamala?&#8221; Charlamagne questioned Donalds. &#8220;She&#8217;s vice president. There&#8217;s still a president.&#8221;
&#8220;Oh, Charlamagne,&#8221; Donalds responded, before explaining that Harris cast the tie-breaking vote on the near-2 trillion dollar &#8220;American Rescue Plan.&#8221; &#8220;She broke the tie that started this inflation that has hurt so many people in our country,&#8221; the representative said.
Rye interjected to suggest Donalds wasn&#8217;t being honest, quietly uttering that his statement is &#8220;not true.&#8221;
&#8220;You sure you want to go there?&#8221; Donalds asked Rye, before pulling out a stack of notes from his jacket pocket.

Donalds told Rye that economic minds, including Larry Summers, a financial advisor to former President Barack Obama, warned that the legislation would create massive inflation. Donalds noted that he knew this, too, and therefore voted against the bill.
Donalds reiterated how wages adjusted for inflation were higher under Trump, and said Harris &#8220;broke the economy&#8221; and shouldn&#8217;t be hired again to try to fix what she broke.
Rye struggled to address Donalds&#8217; arguments and replied, &#8220;I&#8217;m not going to do this, this morning.&#8221;
Donalds posted the clip to X this week, captioning the post: &#8220;On Mar 4, 2021, Kamala cast the TIE-BREAKING vote on the $1.9T American Rescue Plan. Democrat economists warned her it would cause inflation. And it did.&#8221;

Trump Buys Groceries For Pennsylvania Mom, Promises To Bring Prices Down

In order to ensure Kamala Harris’ victory in 2024, there has to be some sort of outsized force that propels her to it. But the problem for Harris is that there aren&#8217;t going to be more debates where points are teed up for her.
If something bad happens in the world, that cuts against the Biden-Harris administration. If a large-scale war breaks out in the Middle East right now, that&#8217;s not going to cut against former President Trump; it&#8217;s going to cut against Biden-Harris because she&#8217;s the vice president who failed to prevent it.
If there&#8217;s an economic collapse, that cuts against Harris. If there&#8217;s any piece of really bad data in the country right now, it cuts against the incumbent.
But there is one piece of news that could be released and manipulated in order to try and help Harris.
And it happened on Wednesday.
The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/fed-cuts-rates-by-half-percentage-point-03566d82" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>:
<blockquote>​The Federal Reserve voted to lower interest rates by a half-percentage point, opting for a bolder start in making its first reduction since 2020. 
Eleven of 12 Fed voters backed the cut, which brings the benchmark federal-funds rate to a range between 4.75% and 5%. Quarterly projections released Wednesday showed a narrow majority of officials penciled in cuts that would lower rates by at least a quarter-point each at meetings in November and December.</blockquote>
They&#8217;re going to start cutting, and they want a hard cut. The problem with a hard cut is that, first, inflation has not gone down all the way to the 2% number the Federal Reserve typically looks for, and, second, the economy is still pretty hot, meaning that unemployment numbers are still not radically up.
So what are they doing? They&#8217;re injecting more money into an economy that actually is not flagging enough to justify that size of a cut. The case for a 25-basis point cut could be made. You could say we need to gradually inject more money into the economy.
But interest rates should be free-flowing and not manipulated by the Federal Reserve at all. It&#8217;s ridiculous that we have a centralized government agency that decides how much your dollar is worth based on a dual mission of reducing unemployment and keeping inflation down. The free market should decide exactly how interest rates float, and sometimes the interest rates need to go up in order to clean out bubbles.
When that doesn&#8217;t happen, bubbles end up growing, and then eventually, the bubbles burst.
The Journal continues:
<blockquote>The Fed governor Michelle Bowman dissented against Wednesday’s decision in favor of a smaller, quarter-point cut. Bowman, who was appointed to the board by Donald Trump in 2018, became the first governor to dissent against an interest-rate decision since 2005. It was the first dissent by any voter on the rate-setting committee since June 2022.
The Fed rate cut marks just the sixth time in the past 30 years that the central bank switched from raising to lowering rates. Usually when the Fed starts cutting rates, it doesn’t know whether it will make a handful of small moves—as it did in 1995 and 1998, when the economy avoided a downturn—or whether it is the start of a longer series of reductions, as in 2001 and 2007, when the central bank cut rates a few months before the economy entered recession.</blockquote>
So, they&#8217;re going to start lowering the interest rates again. There are a few reasons for this. One is the United States government is borrowing money at such an unbelievable clip right now that to leave those interest rates up would ratchet up the interest payments on the national debt. In order to correct for the vast national debt we are piling up, they&#8217;re lowering the interest rates so we don&#8217;t have to pay people back at as high rates. That&#8217;s a major factor.

Another factor is supposed to be that the economy is slowing so much we need to inject a fresh round of capital.
But let&#8217;s be real about this: Capital has not dried up in the American economy. That is why the stock market is currently riding precisely where it is. Just days ago, the price-to-earnings ratio (which assesses whether a stock is over- or under-valued) for the Dow Jones Industrial Average was riding at 31. The average PE ratio for the Dow over the past three years is 20.
That&#8217;s insane. That means stocks are overvalued. That means there&#8217;s quite a lot of money in the system that is being thrown at the stock market because people don&#8217;t know what to do with the money. Investors are getting a fresh infusion of cash in their pocket, and they&#8217;re immediately planting it where they think it will possibly earn a return. Stocks would be one place. They&#8217;re presumably going to do the same in real estate.
The problem is that the interest rates in real estate remain higher than they were five or six years ago. So even if you want to trade a house for a different house, that now means you&#8217;re giving up a 3.5% interest rate for a 6% interest rate on your mortgage, which costs you a lot more money.

So what is the cut designed to do? Making a 50-basis point cut signals two things at the same time. First, it signals the economy is on the verge of a downturn. That&#8217;s the reasoning for cutting it 50-basis points as opposed to 25. But second, a 50-basis point cut simultaneously signals that the worries about inflation are over, which means the economy is strong and solid. Obviously, these two things are in conflict with one another.
Jerome Powell of the Federal Reserve tried to justify this. He said the Fed’s “patient approach” has paid dividends.
If by “patient approach,” he means increasing the prices of everything over the past three and a half years by roughly 20%, then well done, Jerome. Don&#8217;t strain your shoulder patting yourself on the back too hard. 
The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/19/business/economy/inflation-interest-rates-effects.html">New York Times</a> reported: 
<blockquote>People with jobs have started showing up at homeless shelters in Atlanta. Families who can’t cover their grocery bills are pushing up demand at a Boston food bank. A dearth of available houses is plaguing Sacramento. Yet reports of recent raises abound, and a partly retired homeowner near Pittsburgh is happy about his savings.
America’s bout of painfully high inflation — and the period of high interest rates meant to cure it — is finally drawing toward a close. Price increases are nearly back to a normal pace, so much so that the Federal Reserve voted on Wednesday to lower borrowing costs for the first time in more than four years.
But even as the nation’s tumultuous pandemic economic era begins to approach its end, the period is destined to leave lingering marks.</blockquote>
The Federal Reserve does not want Donald Trump in office. They clearly would like to see Harris elected.
So what is the cut really about?
What it&#8217;s about is trying to generate an ersatz feeling of good momentum on the economy, despite the fact the Business Roundtable CEO Economic Outlook Index suggests the job market is slowing.
Is it slowing, or is it solid? We don&#8217;t know. Jerome Powell won&#8217;t tell us. Is inflation conquered, or is it just coming down? We don&#8217;t know. He won&#8217;t tell us.
While White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has the nerve to suggest the White House is completely independent of the Federal Reserve, have you noticed that every major Democrat in the Senate has been calling for a lowering of interest rates for the last year and a half in an attempt to artificially jog the economy?

&#8220;I would never try to take anything away from you in that way,&#8221; the reporter tried again. &#8220;What I&#8217;m asking is &#8230; groceries are probably a smaller part of your budget than, say, you know, someone who&#8217;s like, a little worse off. I think it&#8217;s interesting that people who are a little bit more comfortable are still so concerned about the economy.&#8221;
There was a pause then, and Harner appeared to just be staring at her from behind his mirrored sunglasses. After a few seconds she asked, &#8220;Do you see what I&#8217;m saying?&#8221;
&#8220;Because I want my money to go further. I want inflation to go down, I want interest rates to go back down, I want all that, but that covers everybody in the economy,&#8221; Harner replied. &#8220;Not just me, not just the poor, not just the rich, it covers everybody.&#8221;
&#8220;Now something that I&#8217;ve heard from some people, tell me if this applies to you, is like, they&#8217;re worried their kids aren&#8217;t able to afford a house or a car,&#8221; the reporter tried one more time.
&#8220;No,&#8221; Harner said flatly. &#8220;I trained my kids, and taught my kids properly. They have great educations and they&#8217;re both successful in their careers. Actually, they&#8217;re doing better than me.&#8221;

CNN anchor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/dana-bash" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dana Bash</a> laid into Vice President Kamala Harris during a Wednesday panel discussion, saying that some of the Democratic presidential candidate&#8217;s talking points were repetitive enough to inspire a &#8220;drinking game.&#8221;
Bash used a clip of Harris talking about her plan to create what she calls an &#8220;opportunity economy,&#8221; saying that one only had to listen to the number of times Harris repeated the phrase &#8220;small business&#8221; to get the point she was making.

&#8220;Well, she says that, and she also talks about being a middle class kid,&#8221; Semafor&#8217;s Dave Weigel replied. &#8220;That&#8217;s also at the front of her answers. If you look at the interviews they&#8217;ve been doing with local media, and they&#8217;ve opened up a bit more since the debate, the first question is often, &#8216;What are you going to do to lower prices?'&#8221;
Weigel noted that that question in particular was a &#8220;very hard question for an incumbent party to answer,&#8221; adding, &#8220;It has implications that are very Trumpian. Trump says he&#8217;s going to do mass deportation, that will decrease demand. Trump says he&#8217;ll explore more energy, that&#8217;ll decrease energy costs.&#8221;
&#8220;Democrats can point to the fact that inflation is actually — it was bad two years ago, it&#8217;s not now — but what people want to hear is how do you make the prices go down,&#8221; he concluded, arguing that Harris ultimately &#8220;doesn&#8217;t have an answer&#8221; to that question.

I am one of countless women who are fighting a battle that was never meant to be ours alone. My journey began at the tender age of 17 when I brought my first child into this world without the safety net of family support. Today, I am the mother of three beautiful children, who are my heart and soul. I worked tirelessly in my twenties, juggling three jobs while attending night school to earn a bachelor’s degree. This pursuit for a better life left me with $60,000 in student debt — a shadow that looms large over my future.
Today, I gross $6,000 a month, working 15-20 hours of overtime each week. It’s an income I once idolized and aspired to during my studies, believing it was the key to making a name for myself. Yet, the harsh reality is that after taxes, $2,400 in rent, $800 in health insurance, $700 in childcare for my toddler, $400 in utilities, $250 in car insurance, and another $400 in legal fees each month — stemming from a bitter custody battle with my ex-husband — I find myself $1,900 in the red every month. I receive $400 in child support, but it barely scratches the surface of what’s needed.
I share these detailed financial numbers to underscore the stark reality that we are all confronting in this country. This isn&#8217;t just my struggle — it&#8217;s the shared plight of countless Americans burdened by an unforgiving economic system.
My car payment is an additional burden, an expensive necessity because financing a vehicle was cheaper than paying any amount in full for something I would own. I am using old food stamp money I had saved up for food when I lost my job last year, but that is dwindling and will run out in a month or so. Soon, I will have no money for food.
In the midst of these struggles, I watch in despair as politicians spend more time in political arenas fighting amongst themselves, rather than putting the needs of Americans like me at the forefront. I feel forgotten, as if my reality is not important to those who profit from the political use of the hurt that people like me endure.
I find myself ensnared in a relentless cycle, each day feeling like I am shackled in a form of modern-day slavery — laboring endlessly, knowing deep down that no matter how fiercely I fight, breaking free seems impossible. It&#8217;s as if my very essence is owned, my labor dictated, my freedom stolen by an unyielding system. This economy, this broken system, holds me captive, squeezing every ounce of strength from my soul as I desperately struggle to break free from the chains of my invisible master.

I write this not only as a call for change, but out of personal desperation. I hope that by voicing my struggles, I can somehow make sense of the daily battles I face, and in doing so, find a way to make them more bearable. Each word is a plea, a testament to the resilience I must muster every day, yearning for a glimmer of hope amidst the overwhelming darkness.
I am exhausted — mentally, physically, and emotionally. It feels as though all my energy is spent on mere survival and my relationship with my children suffers because of it. My health is deteriorating, and I can’t afford the copay to seek help. I make too much to qualify for state assistance, but not enough to survive.
In desperation, I&#8217;ve resorted to taking out small credit cards with excruciating interest rates, just to afford basic necessities. Yet, even these lifelines slip from my grasp as I let payments lapse, unable to keep up with the relentless financial demands. Each month, I sink deeper into a quicksand of debt, watching helplessly as it pulls me further under.
Every day, I send out numerous job applications, hoping to break through the algorithmic barriers that online hiring processes have erected. In a desperate bid to gain an edge, I pay for subscriptions to job board websites, yet the opportunities seem scarce in a sea where everyone is striving for the same lifeline. It&#8217;s a bitter pill to swallow knowing my teenage son has more in his savings than I do, and I wrestle with the urge to borrow from him just to afford basic necessities like laundry detergent.
I see women my age turning to platforms like OnlyFans, tempted by the possibility of financial relief. I hold onto my faith, my dignity, and my love for my children as a shield against that reality. Yet, the temptation lurks as bills pile up and my credit score plummets. Emails from creditors with &#8220;Payment Declined&#8221; messages haunt my inbox. My bank account teeters at $3, and payday is a mere cycle of temporary relief before the next wave of bills crashes in.
Each month, I face the agonizing decision of which bills to pay and which to defer, forced to prioritize their importance to my family&#8217;s immediate well-being. This constant juggling act leaves me perpetually behind, always scrambling to catch up, yet never quite able to break free. It&#8217;s a relentless cycle that chips away at my resolve, leaving me feeling defeated and powerless.
I ask you: How can it be that earning $60,000 to $70,000 a year leaves me scrapping for survival? Why are hardworking people like me stuck in a system that seems to reward the few at the expense of the many?
Each day, the dream of owning my own home slips further away. With every missed payment, my credit score plummets, and any chance of building savings evaporates. The soaring prices of homes stretch far beyond my reach, transforming the American Dream into a distant mirage that taunts me from the horizon.
My heart aches as I watch illegal immigrants walk into this country and receive more support than I do. I cry in solitude, locked in my bathroom, journaling and praying for change. This is not just my story, but the story of many women in America who are slowly being crushed under the weight of an unyielding system.
I am choosing to vote for Donald Trump because I yearn for a life where my hard work truly counts, where I can live on my own terms without depending on government handouts just to survive in a system that those in power have broken. I implore those who share my struggles to make the same choice, recognizing that more government band-aids will only lead to restricted freedoms and make it increasingly difficult to get ahead. We need to reclaim our autonomy and ensure our labor reaps the rewards it deserves.
I&#8217;m not seeking handouts or &#8220;free government money&#8221; — I&#8217;m demanding real, substantial change. I vote conservative because I believe in a future where dedication and determination pave the way to personal success and dignity. We need policies that uplift working mothers, honor our contributions, and empower us to provide for our children without sacrificing our health and well-being.
This is a plea for action, for reform, and for a future where we are not punished for striving for better. America, the land of opportunity, must become a reality, not just a dream. Change is not a luxury; it is a necessity for mothers, for families, and for Americans like me.

Kevin Hassett, a former senior adviser to former President Donald Trump and chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, ripped Vice President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamala Harris</a> for the remarks that she made during this week&#8217;s presidential debate where she rewrote history about the U.S. economy&#8217;s recovery under Trump.
Hassett made the remarks during an interview that aired Friday on PBS&#8217; &#8220;Firing Line&#8221; with Margaret Hoover when asked about Harris&#8217; claim that the Biden-Harris administration had to clean up the economy after Trump&#8217;s presidency.
&#8220;In the first quarter of President Biden’s first term, for the Biden-Harris first term, then GDP growth was about 6.5% and inflation was about 1%,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And so the pandemic was just like an awful experience for everybody, of course. And we had the worst quarter that we’ve had since the Great Depression. And through really bipartisan legislation, it passed with unanimous support of Democrats, Republicans and Democrats worked together to repair the economy with a sequence of stimulus bills that were right sized.&#8221;
&#8220;And so even though we had the biggest decline in GDP since the Great Depression of the second quarter for the year, the GDP was basically just about flat,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;And then what happened is that because of the recovery, the economy was really taking off in the first quarter. I don’t think any economists would say that they inherited a disaster. In fact, they inherited a recovery that was raging.&#8221;

He said that the U.S.&#8217; recovery was largely driven by the actions taken by both Democrats and Republicans in 2020, when Trump was still president, who passed bills that were &#8220;sized almost exactly for the harm that was being done by the lockdowns.&#8221;
&#8220;The problem was that the first quarter ended up being 6% growth,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There weren’t any lockdowns. And then they continued another stimulus bill, and that’s where the inflation really started.&#8221;

Former Council Of Economic Advisers Chief Rips Harris’ Attack On Trump’s Economy

On an earnings call, the CEO of Kroger, the <a href="https://www.gourmetpro.co/blog/largest-grocery-chains-usa">third-largest grocery chain</a> in the U.S. behind Walmart and Costco, revealed that the cost of groceries is now affecting even customers who would not be as “budget conscious.&#8221;
“The reduction of excess savings built up during the pandemic, higher interest rates and the effect of inflation are pressuring customers’ ability to spend,” Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen stated on the company’s quarterly earnings call. “This is especially true for our most budget conscious customers, as we’ve been seeing for a while now, but we’re now seeing other customer segments beginning to make changes as well. Customers are purchasing lower-price cuts of meat, buying less, and focusing on essentials.”
McMullen added that Kroger, which is expected to merge with Albertsons, the sixth-largest grocery chain in the nation, is responding by “keeping prices low through promotions, including loyalty, discounts, personalized offers and fuel rewards,” Supermarket News <a href="https://www.supermarketnews.com/company-news/kroger-shrink-is-down-in-q2-as-grocer-prepares-for-albertsons-merger">reported</a>.
“The food industry has always been competitive and will continue to be after this merger. We are committed to closing this merger because bringing Kroger and Albertsons together will provide meaningful and measurable benefits — lower prices, secure jobs and expanded access to fresh, affordable food — for customers, associates, and communities across the country,” McMullen added.
In February, The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/economy/consumers/its-been-30-years-since-food-ate-up-this-much-of-your-income-2e3dd3ed">reported</a>, &#8220;It’s been 30 years since food ate up this much of your income. The last time Americans spent this much of their money on food, George H.W. Bush was in office, &#8216;Terminator 2: Judgment Day&#8217; was in theaters, and C+C Music Factory was rocking the Billboard charts. Eating continues to cost more &#8230; In 2022, consumers spent 11.3% of their disposable income on food, according to the most recent USDA data available.&#8221;
In April 2023, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City <a href="https://www.kansascityfed.org/research/economic-bulletin/tight-labor-markets-have-been-a-key-contributor-to-high-food-inflation/">noted,</a> &#8220;Food inflation has been above headline measures of inflation since early 2022. &#8230; Growth in the price of processed food has driven inflation for food at home since 2022.&#8221;

Census data released Thursday showed Americans are less well off than they were four years ago.
Across the board, average household income was down by $1,221 after taking into account inflation, according to the Annual Community Survey, whose 2023 numbers were released by the Census Bureau on Thursday. The portion of households with income of less than $10,000 in 2023 grew by a full percentage point compared to 2019, from 4.3% to 5.3%.
Fewer American households are making $75,000 or more per year, once past earnings are put into 2023 dollars that factor in inflation spurred by massive government spending. Compared to 2019, the percentage of households making $150,000 to $200,000 has dropped 0.2%, while the share making more than that remained the same.
The Census figures deal a blow to Vice President Kamala Harris, whose presidential campaign is built on a pledge that Harris will fight inflation. Former President Donald Trump and his allies have repeatedly criticized Harris for making this pledge, noting that inflation has skyrocketed during the Biden-Harris administration, which has done little to correct the problem.
Inflation has hit those on fixed incomes particularly hard. Social Security checks don’t go as far, and retirement income averaged $31,482 —which, after adjusting for inflation, is $2,450 less than the average retirement income in 2019.
Meanwhile, significantly more Americans are reliant on government handouts, with the share of households on food stamps rising from 10.7% to 12.2% — something that didn’t improve the poverty figures, since it was counted as income.
Another Census metric that measures poverty after taking into account government assistance received, called the <a href="https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2024/09/supplemental-poverty-measure.html?utm_campaign=20240911acos1&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;supplementary poverty measure,&#8221;</a> found that the percentage of people in poverty has increased in each year of the Biden administration, rising in 2022 and 2023. In 2019&#8211;during the Trump administration and before the coronavirus pandemic&#8211;38.3 million people were in poverty.
In 2023, it was 42.8 million. The poverty rate went down in 2020 and 2021 because of a wave of massive government handouts resulting from the government shutting down the economy because of the virus, but the long-term result suggests that they didn&#8217;t help; instead, they created inflation that ultimately made more people poor. They also suggest that government giveaways that continued under the Biden-Harris administration, such as student loan forgiveness, did not contribute to a reduction in poverty.
The Census Bureau said 2023 also saw “the largest annual real increase in rental costs since at least 2011,” referring to the amount that renters paid to live in their home plus utilities. Rents went up by 3.8% last year, double the increase in 2019 and nearly four times the increase in 2017.
The figures directly contradict the Harris campaign&#8217;s <a href="https://kamalaharris.com/issues/">claim</a> that “Vice President Harris has always stood up for renters” and that rents would drop if she were elected president, while “Trump would raise rents.”
Meanwhile, families have been saddled with hefty costs, increasingly finding it necessary to pay for private school after public schools gave into union pressure to shutter during COVID and lowered standards in the name of “equity.” The percentage of K-12 students in private schools rose from 10.3% in 2017 to 12.8% in 2023.
The data also undercut figures showing a slight improvement in the employment rate. Although employment rose by 0.1% since 2019, that rate only counts those who want to work; the same amount have given up looking for work entirely, and are therefore not counted in the unemployment rate.
Additionally, the Biden-Harris administration has boosted the employment rate by creating government jobs, even though the spending that entails contributes to inflation that harms the economy. The percentage of workers who were government workers rose from 14% to 14.4% since 2019.

Americans’ Incomes Are Lower Than Four Years Ago Thanks To Inflation, Census Says

Big Lots filed for bankruptcy on Monday citing inflation and high interest rates as main reasons for the discount retail store&#8217;s financial troubles.
The home goods chain, which boasts bargain prices for furniture and decor also pointed to fewer people spending money on these things in the wake of the pandemic.
“The company has been adversely affected by recent macroeconomic factors such as high inflation and interest rates that are beyond its control,” Big Lots <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/09/09/big-lots-bankruptcy-plans-sale-and-store-closures.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a press release.
“The prevailing economic trends have been particularly challenging to Big Lots, as its core customers curbed their discretionary spending on the home and seasonal product categories that represent a significant portion of the company’s revenue,” the company said.
As part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, Big Lots agreed to sell its business to a private equity firm, Nexus Capital Management for about $760 million, according to court records.
Big Lots runs more than 1,300 stores across 48 states and made around $4.7 billion in revenue over the year that ended in September 2023.
Nearly 300 stores will now close, the company said, but the remaining stores will continue to offer &#8220;extreme bargains.&#8221; Previously, Big Lots had told the Securities &amp; Exchange Commission (SEC) it planned to close only 35 to 40 stores.

CEO Bruce Thorn said the bankruptcy filing will enable Big Lots to move forward with more financial stability, and they &#8220;remain committed to offering extreme bargains, enabling easy shopping in our stores and online, and providing an outstanding customer experience.&#8221;
