President Joe Biden wants everyone in America to know he supports the LGBTQ community.
And that&#8217;s fine. Don&#8217;t agree with him, don&#8217;t vote for him.
But why is Biden pushing that same agenda on nations around the world?
The U.S. government recently announced it would be sending its envoy for LGBTQ rights to Indonesia.
Jessica Stern, Washington’s special envoy to advance the rights of LGBTQ people, was scheduled to visit Indonesia on December 7, following stops in Vietnam and the Philippines, the State Department had said on November 28.
But the top clerical body in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country denounced the scheduled visit by the LGBTQ rights envoy, saying it would not welcome a visitor &#8220;whose intention is to undermine our nation’s cultural and religious values.&#8221;

The Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) Deputy Chairman Anwar Abbas said the organization &#8220;categorically rejects the visit by the special envoy,&#8221; Benar News <a href="https://www.benarnews.org/english/news/indonesian/indonesia-us-lgbt-envoy-visit-12012022125233.html">reported</a>.
The MUI &#8220;cannot welcome a guest whose purpose in coming here is to damage and undermine the noble religious and cultural values ​​of our nation,&#8221; Anwar said. &#8220;If this behavior is tolerated, it will lead to humanity’s extinction, because if men marry men and women marry women, they will not reproduce.&#8221;
Let&#8217;s pause here. Americans are, by and large, accepting of homosexuality. Some 72% of Americans say so, according to a 2020 <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2020/06/25/global-divide-on-homosexuality-persists/">poll</a> by Pew Research.
But America is not the world. That same poll found only 9% of Indonesians agree homosexuality &#8220;should be accepted by society.&#8221;
So why should we fly into their country and push LGBTQ rights? Why should Biden send officials to other countries &#8212; officials who represent America &#8212; and try to be divisive over the issue?
Earlier this week, the U.S. government canceled Stern&#8217;s trip to Indonesia.
“[A]fter discussions with our counterparts in the Indonesian government, we have decided to cancel Special Envoy Stern’s visit to Indonesia,” Ambassador Sung Kim said in a statement on Friday.
“Knowing that around the world LGBTQI+ persons experience disproportionate levels of violence and discrimination, it is important to continue the dialogue and ensure mutual respect for one another, rather than pretending that the issues do not exist,” he said.
Sure, for Indonesians. That&#8217;s their dialogue to have, not ours.
For instance, Indonesia on Tuesday approved a new criminal code to prohibit anyone in the country from having sex outside marriage. The law takes effect in 2025 and will apply to residents and foreigners residing in Indonesia, along with tourists visiting destinations such as Bali.
Under the new code, extramarital sex will carry a jail term of up to a year, unmarried couples living together could be jailed for up to six months, and adultery will also be a jailable offense.
That has prompted widespread protests across the country. And that&#8217;s fine &#8212; but it&#8217;s none of our business. Imagine if Indonesia sent an envoy to the U.S. to preach jail time for people who have sex outside of marriage.
We do a lot of things right in America, but plenty of things wrong, too. But either way, we ought not to be proselytizing in foreign countries, pushing them to accept homosexuality. That&#8217;s their business.

An Indonesian ferry transporting 271 people caught fire on Wednesday off the coast of Bali, and rescue efforts are underway as the number of casualties and those injured is unknown.
The Mutiara Timur I, including 236 passengers and 35 personnel, was engulfed in flames about a mile from Karangasem beach, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-fires-indonesia-evacuations-bali-b41ab6a4196debbf30162c130aa4e4cc?taid=6374dbe7b9e4b40001bcf01b&amp;utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&amp;utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_source=Twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to</a> the Associated Press.
“We are still focused on evacuation efforts,” Bali’s search and rescue agency head, Gede Darmada, told the AP.
Numerous naval vessels and local fishing boats were reportedly working to evacuate people to two navy ships in the rescue effort.
Videos posted to social media from those on the scene showed smoke emerging from multiple points across the City Line vessel, along with some people who had been rescued on a neighboring boat.

Travel by ferry is common in the nation comprised of more than 17,000 islands. Though rare, ferry incidents have led to mass tragedies in the past.
In May, a ferry in Indonesia carrying <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/rest-of-world/25-missing-after-ferry-sinks-in-indonesia/articleshow/91864109.cms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">42 people</a> sank in the Central Sulawesi province. In 2018, another with 200 people <a href="https://7news.com.au/news/disaster-and-emergency/six-dead-as-ferry-sinks-near-bali-c-3263820" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sank</a> in the North Sumatra area of Indonesia, killing 167 people.
The event also comes as the leaders of the G20 are meeting in Bali, Indonesia. Heads of state for the nations, including President Joe Biden, have joined in the event.
Biden has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders, addressing many international political issues, including the war in Ukraine, Taiwan, and climate change.
After his three-hour meeting with Xi on Monday, Biden said that he does not believe China has imminent plans to invade Taiwan.
“I made it clear that our policy on Taiwan has not changed at all,” Biden <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/nov/14/taiwan-looms-large-as-joe-biden-prepares-to-meet-xi-jinping-in-bali" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> reporters. “It’s the same exact position we have always had. I made it clear that I want to see cross-strait issues peacefully resolved so that it never has to come to that. I’m convinced that he understood exactly what I was saying, and I understood what he was saying.”

Fights between supporters of two rival soccer teams in East Java, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/indonesia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Indonesia</a>, led to a massive riot and a stampede, killing at least 129 people.
Authorities said most of those killed at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malong either suffocated or were trampled to death trying to get out of the stadium after chaos erupted and police fired tear gas, the Associated Press <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/4759039/indonesian-soccer-match-riot-leaves-more-than-120-dead" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Soccer club Arema lost 3-2 to Persebaya Surabaya, and Arema fans <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/oct/02/indonesia-football-fans-killed-east-java-arema-malang" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> proceeded to run onto the field after the defeat. Among the 129 killed were two police officers. Another 180 people were injured during the riot.
Nearly 3,000 fans stormed the field after the game, according to local reports, and multiple vehicles were torched and damaged.
Shocking video of the event showed hundreds of people running off the field as police ran onto the field in riot gear and hit people with batons.

East Java Police Chief Nico Afinta said the death count is likely to increase as many of the 180 injured were in critical condition. Archeologists discovered what they believe to be evidence of the oldest known surgical amputation: a 31,000-year-old one-legged skeleton, according to a <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05160-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paper</a> published Wednesday. 
Australian and Indonesian researchers excavated the skeleton in 2020 from a limestone cave in the Indonesian section of Borneo, an island divided between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. The skeleton, missing its lower left leg, is the oldest known example of surgical amputation, according to a report published in Nature. 
“It was a huge surprise that this ancient forager survived a very serious and life threatening childhood operation,” University of Sydney bioarchaeologist Melandri Vlok <a href="https://www.sciencealert.com/worlds-oldest-evidence-of-surgical-amputation-lay-hidden-for-31000-years" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, adding “that the wound healed to form a stump, and that they lived for years in mountainous terrain with altered mobility – suggesting a high degree of community care.” 
Researchers say the amputation was successfully performed on a child, who likely lived between 6 and 9 years after the procedure. The report called the discovery “unexpectedly early evidence” of a successful operation of its kind, leading researchers to believe people of the time, at least in tropical Asia, had medical knowledge and skills not previously attributed to the time period. 
The body&#8217;s remains were placed in the Liang Tebo cave on Indonesian Borneo, the third largest island in the world, in the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan. The area is also known for having some of the earliest-dated rock art in the world. 
Prior to this discovery, the earliest known evidence of an amputation “operation” was a 7,000-year-old skeleton of a European farmer’s left forearm, just above the elbow, which was found in France. According to the report, this amputation partially healed and would have required technical skills and knowledge of human anatomy. 
The shift of populations to settled agricultural societies from hunter-gatherer lifestyles, known as the Neolithic Revolution, has been attributed as the beginning of the evolution of medical knowledge because the introduction of new health problems required evolving practices in medicine. This revolution occurred nearly 10,000 years ago, far more recent than the 31,000-year-old amputee.
“It had long been assumed healthcare is a newer invention,” anthropologist Alecia Schrenk <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/one-legged-stone-age-skeleton-may-show-oldest-amputation-rcna46671" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> NBC News in an email. “Research like this article demonstrates that prehistoric peoples were not left to fend for themselves.” 
Researchers previously thought amputations occurred on fingers and were strictly for either punishment or ceremonial purposes. The discovery of the 31,000-year-old successful amputee is significant, considering successful surgical amputation didn’t become a medical norm in Western societies until the last 100 years, the report said. 
Scientists ruled out the possibility that the amputation was a punishment based on the care given in burial and the treatment of the amputee for the remainder of their life. The skeleton was aged using radiation levels in its tooth enamel, then matching the results to the radiocarbon dating of the rocks and sediment the body was buried in, <a href="https://www.sciencealert.com/worlds-oldest-evidence-of-surgical-amputation-lay-hidden-for-31000-years">Science Alert</a> reported. 
Researchers said the excavation was careful and that the skeleton’s right leg had all bones intact. The “trauma pattern observed is not consistent with clinical descriptions of non-surgical amputation,” meaning the bone had clean cuts, the paper explained. 
Archeologist Tim Maloney, one of the project&#8217;s leaders, said at a <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/09/07/1121535411/31000-year-old-skeleton-amputation-surgery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press conference</a> that the discovery “rewrites the history of human medical knowledge and developments.”

An Indonesian woman filed a lawsuit against her former husband of ten months after learning he is actually a woman—despite engaging in intimacy several times, according to local media reports.
NA, 22, first met her ex-husband — who used the name Ahnaf Arrafif on a dating app — in Jambi City, the capital and largest city in the Indonesian province of Jambi. However, local media reports Arrafif’s real name is Erayani.
Erayani and NA developed an online relationship before dating in person.
Erayani, who said she graduated from an unknown school in New York and practiced neurology, visited NA for a week to help take care of her sick parents.
<a href="https://video.tribunnews.com/view/397914/potret-erayani-wanita-yang-nyamar-jadi-pria-nikahi-gadis-jambi-ini-momen-prewed-pernikahannya">Tribun News</a> reported, NA’s parents gave Erayani permission to marry their daughter after several weeks of dating. However four months after tying the knot, the family became suspicious of the NA’s “husband” questioning why they never met Erayani’s family or why “he” never removed clothing—even when bathing.
Erayani also appeared to have an open schedule for a “neurologist.”
At some point during the short marriage, NA confronted her ex-partner’s lumps on Erayani’s chest, which “he” claimed was a hormonal problem. That’s when NA’s mother forced Erayani to remove her clothes to prove she is, in fact, a man.
In that moment, Erayani came clean admitting he was a she and not a doctor.
According to local media, NA told the Jambi District Court she never suspected Ahnaf Arrafif was, in fact, Erayani, until her mother became suspicious of the marriage.
NA also said Erayani insisted their intimacy only consisted of using hands.
Erayani has appeared in court only for lying about her medical qualifications.

An Indonesian man who helped pass a law that punished adulterers by publicly flogging them has himself been flogged for adultery.
The man, known only as Mukhlis, was given 28 lashes after he had an affair with a married woman. The woman was also publicly punished.
CNN <a href="https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/11/01/asia/indonesia-adultery-caning-scli-intl/index.html">reported</a> that the man is a member of the Aceh Ulema Council in one of the most conservative provinces of Indonesia, and the only region that imposes Sharia law. A number of other offenses are also punishable by caning, including homosexuality and alcohol consumption.
&#8220;We have clarified his identity and we proceeded with the investigation and handed over the dossier to prosecutors, and today we carried out the implementation of the flogging punishment,&#8221; Banda Aceh sharia police chief Muhammad Hidayat told the Agence France-Presse.
Another resident told the AFP that “A lot of things we can learn, but ultimately we have to enforce God&#8217;s laws, especially on Islamic land like here.&#8221;
The deputy regent of the municipality told the AFP: “No matter who you are &#8230; if you violate (Islamic) law you will be whipped.”
“The organisation for which Mukhlis works advised the local government and legislature on drafting and implementing Aceh’s religious law, including public flogging,” the AFP <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/nov/01/indonesia-man-flogged-adultery-law-helped-draw-aceh">reported</a>.
“It was not immediately clear what he did for the agency.”
The outlet reported that Mukhlis would likely be fired due to his employer’s moral code.
In addition to Mukhlis, the AFP reported, “a female university student was flogged a dozen times after she was caught spending the night in a boarding house with a man, who escaped punishment because he was underage.”
The outlet reported that three people were caned in July for premarital sex, each one receiving 100 lashes. Last year two men were whipped 100 times for having sex with underaged girls.
As CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/14/asia/indonesia-banda-aceh-public-flogging-intl/index.html">reported</a>, 15 people were caned last year in the Aceh province.
“Two men accused of being gay received 87 lashes each for gay sex, while nine others were sentenced up to 26 lashes for adultery. Four people were caned for being drunk, including one woman who received 27 lashes,” the outlet reported.
People gather for the public punishments, sometimes by the hundreds. Mukhlis’ flogging was attended by just a handful of people, but some filmed the lashing with their cell phones.
Those who are publicly flogged receive health checks ahead of time to ensure they can withstand the punishment.
CNN reported that Aceh’s Sharia criminal code was adopted in September 2015. Human Rights Watch <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2016/03/29/human-rights-watch-complaint-rights-lgbt-people-indonesias-aceh-province">reported</a> that the adoption of the criminal code has “had a chilling effect on the basic rights to security and freedom of expression for Aceh&#8217;s deeply marginalized LGBT community.&#8221; The report added that LGBT people in the Aceh Province “live in a spiraling climate of fear &#8230; [and] face ever-present harassment, arbitrary arrests and detention by Sharia [Islamic law] and municipal police, and threats of torture.&#8221;

On Friday afternoon, a volcano in southern Indonesia <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-07-27/mount-tangkuban-parahu-erupts/11352982​">erupted</a>, spewing ash as high as <a href="https://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2019/07/26/mount-tangkuban-parahu-erupts-visitors-told-to-stay-away.html">650 feet</a> into the air, according to the country&#8217;s National Board for Disaster Management.
The ash from the eruption of Mount Tangkuban Parahu landed as far as 6,500 feet away, reports <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-07-27/mount-tangkuban-parahu-erupts/11352982">ABC</a>.
The volcano is situated approximately 18.6 miles north of Indonesia&#8217;s third largest city of Bandung in West Java. As of publication, no casualties have been disclosed. However, <a href="http://www.9news.com.au/world/world-news-indonesia-volcano-mount-tangkuban-parahu-erupts-near-bandung/df29e72a-1b0e-49cd-ac89-1ccc4ebfd94a​">9News</a> reports that two individuals were taken to the hospital with &#8220;breathing difficulties.&#8221;
According to authorities, there were only about 100 people nearby, which led to a swift evacuation effort.

The eruption of Mount Tangkuban Parahu comes just a month and a half after another Indonesian volcano, Mount Sinabung, sent <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2019/jun/11/indonesias-mount-sinabung-spews-huge-column-of-ash-during-latest-eruption-video​">plumes of ash</a> into the skies above North Sumatra, about 56 miles southwest of the city of Medan. Although that eruption sent ash approximately 4.3 miles into the air, no casualties were reported.
These eruptions took place 1,300 miles apart.
Indonesia is infamously settled along the &#8220;Ring of Fire,&#8221; or Circum-Pacific Belt, a 24,900 mile horseshoe of seismic activity that stretches from New Zealand to Japan, the Philippines, Peru, Chile, and the entire western seaboard of the United States.
According to <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Ring-of-Fire​">Britannica</a>, roughly &#8220;75% of the world’s volcanoes occur within the Ring of Fire.&#8221;
The encyclopedia adds that &#8220;the Ring of Fire has been the setting for several of the largest earthquakes in recorded history, including the Chile earthquake of 1960, the Alaska earthquake of 1964, the Chile earthquake of 2010, and the Japan earthquake of 2011, as well as the earthquake that produced the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004.&#8221;
The <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/Indian-Ocean-tsunami-of-2004​">Boxing Day tsunami</a> in 2004, which was caused by an 9.1 magnitude undersea earthquake near the northern tip of Sumatra, led to the deaths of as many as 230,000 people.
Indonesia has a history of deadly volcanic eruptions. In 1815, the eruption of Mount Tambora killed at least 100,000 people, according to <a href="https://www.history.com/news/the-deadliest-volcanic-eruption-in-history​">History</a>. In 1822, Mount Galunggung erupted, killing 4,000.
In 1883, Krakatoa&#8217;s eruption killed about 36,000. In 1919, the <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/83144/indonesias-mount-kelut-erupts​">Kelut eruption</a> killed 5,000. In 1963, Mount Agung erupted, leaving between 1,100 and 1,900 people dead. According to <a href="https://geology.com/volcanoes/agung/">Geology</a>, &#8220;The 1963-1964 eruption at Mount Agung was one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th Century.&#8221;
In 2010, the <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/southeast-asia/article/2147226/people-ordered-stay-way-indonesias-most-active-volcano">eruption of Mount Merapi</a> killed approximately 347 people. More recently, in December 2018, the Anak Krakatau eruption and subsequent tsunami <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-46674490">killed roughly 429 people</a>.
The <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/how-many-active-volcanoes-are-there-earth?qt-news_science_products=0#qt-news_science_products​">U.S. Geological Survey</a> (USGS) estimates that there are &#8220;1,500 potentially active volcanoes worldwide.&#8221; The National Museum of Natural History&#8217;s Global Volcanism Program <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/maps-and-graphics/mapped-the-worlds-most-dangerous-volcanoes/">places</a> Indonesia in third for countries with the most volcanoes (139) – behind Russia at number two, and the United States at number one.
This will not be Indonesia’s last encounter with a deadly volcano. While there were no casualties this time, the next round of activity may prove deadly.

Volcanic Eruption Sends Ash Plume 650 Feet Into The Air

A tsunami set off by a volcanic eruption on Saturday killed at least 222 people in Indonesia on this holiday weekend. More than 800 were injured and dozens remain missing.
The massive flow of water waves smashed onto Carita Beach, one of the world&#8217;s most infamous volcanic islands, at 9:30 p.m., catching people off guard. The tidal wave ripped houses and hotels from their foundations in seconds and swept terrified concertgoers into the sea, the <a href="https://apnews.com/e91d55a6b39542c0896c5f31a0098870">Associated Press</a> reported.

The group released a statement saying their bass player, guitarist and road manager were found dead, while two other band members and the wife of one of the performers remained missing.
&#8220;The tide rose to the surface and dragged all the people on site,&#8221; the statement said. &#8220;Unfortunately, when the current receded our members were unable to save themselves while some did not find a place to hold on.&#8221;

Scientists said that the tsunami may have been caused by underwater landslides or those on Anak Krakatau&#8217;s steep slope following its eruption. The volcano&#8217;s name translates to &#8220;Child of Krakatoa,&#8221; a volcanic island formed over years &#8220;after one of the largest, most devastating eruptions in recorded history occurred at the Krakatoa volcano more than a century ago,&#8221; the AP said. &#8220;The scientists also cited tidal waves caused by the full moon.&#8221;

The Anak Krakatau volcano lies in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra islands, linking the Indian Ocean and Java Sea. It erupted about 24 minutes before the tsunami, the geophysics agency said.
The worst-affected area was the Pandeglang region of Java&#8217;s Banten province, which encompasses Ujung Kulon National Park and popular beaches, the disaster agency said.
Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said 222 deaths had been confirmed and at least 843 people were injured.

On Friday, a massive 7.5 magnitude earthquake rocked the Indonesian city of Palu in Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The earthquake was followed by a tsunami with an estimated wave height of 10 feet, reports the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-45693281&#8203;">BBC</a>.
The earthquake and subsequent tsunami resulted in 384 fatalities and hundreds of injuries. Due to the nature of this event, the death toll is likely to rise.

While many of the injured are being treated at local hospitals, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/29/asia/indonesia-earthquake/index.html">CNN</a>, at least one hospital has been structurally compromised, resulting in some of the injured being cared for in the street.
It&#8217;s also believed that there are individuals trapped under debris.
Already, a story of bravery has emerged from the tragedy. 21-year-old air traffic controller Anthonius Gunawan Agung was killed after staying behind to guide an airplane out of Palu airport during the crisis.
By the time the airplane was out of danger, it was too late for Gunawan Agung. The <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/indonesia-tsunami-hero-air-traffic-controller-died-in-earthquake-after-staying-to-ensure-plane-took-a3949296.html">Evening Standard</a> reports that &#8220;the crumbling tower was collapsing around him, and he was forced to jump from a fourth floor window.&#8221; He was taken to the hospital, where he passed away.

According to CNN, there&#8217;s concern that some of the more rural areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami may not receive help in time, as Palu airport has been shut down, and the closest usable airport is at least a 10 hour drive from the city.

7.5 Magnitude Earthquake And Tsunami Rock Indonesia; At Least 380 Dead

Radical Muslims launched a terror attack in East Java, Indonesia, assaulting three churches and killing at least a dozen innocent civilians.
The attack took place on Sunday, May 14, when a family of suicide bombers associated with the Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), a terror cell with ties to ISIS and Al Qaeda, entered three churches and detonated explosive devices within a very short time of one another, according to <a href="https://morningstarnews.org/2018/05/islamic-extremist-suicide-bomber-family-attacks-three-churches-in-east-java-indonesia/">Morning Star News</a>.
The Surabaya Centre Pentecostal Church, Diponegoro Indonesian Christian Church, and Santa Maria Catholic Church were targeted by the leader of a JAD, his two sons, and his wife, who took their two young daughters into the third church. They both perished in the explosion.
According to the local police, two other churches were targeted, but the bombs failed to detonate.
Another explosive device detonated prematurely, killing a woman and her teenage son in a Sidoarjo low-income housing district. The police located the bomber and killed him during a stand-off.
Islamic State has taken responsibility for the attacks.
On Monday, a separate attack by alleged members of JAD took place. The perpetuators crashed motorcycles into a nearby police station, detonating bombs. Though only the terrorists died, an eight-year-old girl was wounded along with at least ten police officers.
The combined death tolls of the attacks came to at least a dozen innocent civilians dead and another 40 seriously injured.
The police told the local media that they killed four suspected members of JAD during a raid and arrested two others.
According to Morning Star News, this is the fifth largest attack in Indonesia launched by Islamic State since 2016.

On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis got a bracing view of the toughness of Indonesian troops, watching them as they drank the blood of snakes, walked on fire, rolled around on glass and shattered bricks with their heads.
One hooded Indonesian soldier sightlessly cut a cucumber in another soldier&#8217;s mouth; another blindfolded soldier shot a balloon placed precariously between another soldier&#8217;s legs. There was some luck involved, apparently; Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-indonesia-usa-mattis/mattis-sees-indonesian-forces-drink-snake-blood-roll-in-glass-idUSKBN1FD0AD">reported</a> that one shot missed the target but no injury was reported.
In a rather unusual display of toughness, soldiers dropped snakes, including a King Cobra, near Mattis, and immediately cut off the snakes&#8217; heads and drank their blood. One soldier went so far as to bite the head off a snake that was still alive.

Mattis later told reporters, &#8220;You could imagine how much training went into each individual there, that they were able to do that. When you watch a force do that, many small things, perfectly, you can imagine that they can also put the bigger things together.&#8221;
The last demonstration was conducted to the music of &#8220;Mission Impossible&#8221; while the soldiers demonstrated a hostage rescue operation.
As the Examiner reports, &#8220;The Indonesian military is hoping to grow its relationship with the Pentagon after human rights abuses in the 1990s prompted the U.S. to impose restrictions on their relationship.&#8221; The Council of Foreign Relations <a href="https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/us-indonesian-military-relationship">wrote</a> in 2005, &#8220; &#8230; human rights groups still view the Indonesian military as a serial abuser of human rights. That set up a dilemma for Washington, which during the 1990s curbed severely its military ties with Indonesia&#8217;s armed forces, only to ramp it up again after the events of September 11, 2001.&#8221;

In Malaysia and Indonesia, hard-line Muslim groups are urging a boycott of Starbucks <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-malaysia-indonesia-muslim-groups-starbucks-boycott-20170706-story.html">because it champions same-sex marriage</a>.
The Malaysian group, Perkasa, said this week it wants its 500,000 members to boycott Starbucks coffee shops; Indonesia&#8217;s second largest mainstream Muslim group, Muhammadiyah, with roughly 29 million members, also called for a Starbucks ban.
The ire of the Muslim groups was elicited by comments from former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz in 2013, when he<a href="http://money.cnn.com/2013/03/26/news/companies/starbucks-gay-marriage/index.html"> told</a> a shareholder who was concerned about the chain’s support for same-sex marriage, &#8220;Not every decision is an economic decision. The lens in which we are making that decision is through the lens of our people. … If you feel respectfully that you can get a higher return [than] the 38% you got last year, it&#8217;s a free country. You could sell your shares at Starbucks and buy shares in other companies.&#8221;
In 2012, Starbucks joined Microsoft and Nike <a href="v">in support of a bill</a> that made Washington the seventh state to legalize gay marriage.
Perkasa stated that the Malaysian government should revoke the trading license given to Starbucks as well as other companies championing same-sex marriage, including Microsoft and Apple; Amini Amir Abdullah, the chief of Perkasa&#8217;s Islamic affairs bureau, said the ban on Starbucks resulted from gay rights flouting Islam and Malaysia&#8217;s constitution. In Malaysia, sodomy is punishable by up to 20 years in prison; in Indonesia, a case before the Constitutional Court seeks to criminalize gay sex.
