The more than 20 million Americans who pay for expedited airport security with TSA PreCheck will be stuck with everyone else as long as the government shutdown continues.
The partial government shutdown has resulted in the temporary suspension of both the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck and Global Entry security programs – a move Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said was designed to prioritize the general pool of travelers.
“Shutdowns have serious real world consequences,&#8221; <a href="https://apnews.com/article/homeland-security-tsa-precheck-global-entry-dc1d2ccd913a74fa2c8b91dad340a3b3">Noem said</a>, adding, &#8220;TSA and CBP are prioritizing the general traveling population at our airports and ports of entry and suspending courtesy and special privilege escorts.”
The two programs work in tandem to speed up security lines for departing travelers. TSA PreCheck allows registered travelers to check in for flights more quickly. Pre-approved travelers are not required to remove electronics from their bags, and security lines often move through in ten minutes or less.
For arriving travelers, the Global Entry program allows them to use an automated kiosk equipped with facial recognition software to avoid the long customs lines and complete passport verification. It is designed to eliminate the need to stand in long customs lines when returning to the United States from abroad. Travelers who pay for the Global Entry program also receive the benefits offered to TSA PreCheck members.
Democrats on the Homeland Security Committee released a statement claiming that the suspension of those programs was entirely political and accused DHS of intentionally punishing travelers.

TSA released a <a href="https://x.com/TSA/status/2022067729503858905">similar statement</a> at the start of the shutdown, blaming Democrats for leveraging the TSA in their efforts to force President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration into making changes to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
&#8220;The government shutdown will cease pay for all of TSA’s more than 63,000-person workforce and suspend non-essential services. Over 99% of that workforce resides in communities across the country,&#8221; Senior Official Performing the Duties of Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl said in a statement. &#8220;Democrats should fund the department and stop punishing our workforce and the everyday travelers they serve. A prolonged shutdown could result in significant attrition and increased callout rates of our officers including noticeable impacts at airports, including delays, longer wait times and cancelled flights.&#8221;

Congressional candidate Justin Pearson (D-TN) refused to name even one illegal alien he would deport — even when asked directly — and instead delivered a series of comments attacking Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Pearson began with a general complaint about ICE, claiming that no one in President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration could be &#8220;trusted&#8221; to hold themselves accountable to the people. He argued that both ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection in their current forms should be dissolved entirely, and that new organizations with different priorities should be built from the ground up.

&#8220;But what is the work we need them to do?&#8221; Jennings asked again.
&#8220;Well, first let&#8217;s look at what they don&#8217;t need to do,&#8221; Pearson said, prompting a chuckle from Jennings. &#8220;They don&#8217;t need to go into communities like Memphis —&#8221;
&#8220;Do they need to deport illegal aliens?&#8221; Jennings asked directly.
&#8220;— they&#8217;re currently traumatizing our communities —&#8221;
&#8220;Do they need to deport illegal aliens?&#8221; Jennings repeated the question. &#8220;Can you say it?&#8221;
Jennings asked the question several times, and while Pearson was ready and willing to say many times what ICE should *not* do, he could not come up with one thing that a newly-formed immigration law enforcement agency *would* do, other than aid in finding a path to citizenship for illegal aliens who were already in the United States.
At no point was Pearson able to provide Jennings with an answer to his question as to what ICE should be doing or whether there were any illegal aliens he believed should be deported — and after several minutes, host Abby Phillip stepped in to change the topic.

Two officers with the Detroit Police Department were suspended without pay for 30 days on Thursday for calling Customs and Border Protection agents on two separate occasions that resulted in the agents taking suspects into federal custody.
A Detroit Police sergeant and officer were accused by Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison of breaking department policy when they called Border Patrol agents during traffic stops on December 16 and February 9, ABC&#8217;s Detroit affiliate WXYZ <a href="https://www.wxyz.com/news/dpd-officer-sergeant-could-be-fired-after-calling-cbp-on-traffic-stops">reported</a>. Bettison pushed to fire the officers, but the Board of Police Commissioners voted on Thursday to suspend the cops without pay. The officers were initially suspended with pay on February 12.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement <a href="https://x.com/ICEgov/status/2024856403232403816">responded</a> to the development and told the suspended officers in a post on X, &#8220;We have a place for you, patriots.&#8221; Under its message, ICE posted the link to where people can apply to work for the agency.
While Detroit has not officially declared itself a &#8220;sanctuary city&#8221; for illegal immigrants, it effectively acts as on as the police are prohibited from cooperating with federal immigration agents. During the incident earlier this month, Detroit Police sergeant Denise Wallet was called to assist an officer who was dealing with a person who could not speak English. According to Chief Bettison, the sergeant called Border Patrol to help with translation services instead of using the police department&#8217;s translation service line.
Wallet, who has been with the department for 27 years, sued the city after she was suspended. In a complaint, Wallet said that she contacted Border Patrol simply to identify the suspect, &#8220;not to enforce immigration law or to inquire into the subject’s immigration status,&#8221; Michigan Advance <a href="https://michiganadvance.com/2026/02/20/detroit-cop-who-called-border-patrol-sues-city-to-keep-her-job-says-she-did-not-violate-policy/#:~:text=Currently%2C%20Detroit%20Police%20Department's%20policy,for%20translation%20services%20during%20stops.">reported</a>. Wallet&#8217;s action was discovered by the police department during a bodycam audit, which showed the sergeant make &#8220;a verbal comment expressing her disagreement with the DPD policy regarding immigration and collaboration with the federal government.&#8221;
In the complaint, Wallet argues that the police department&#8217;s policy violates federal law, which states that &#8220;no state or local government entity or official may prohibit or restrict any government entity or official from sending to, or receiving from, federal immigration authorities information regarding the citizenship or immigration status of any individual.&#8221; Wallet also argues that her due process rights were violated since she was suspended without being given an opportunity to defend herself.
Leftist Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib praised Chief Bettison for punishing the police officers.
&#8220;Chief Bettison and I agree that we need to make sure that our community and our residents trust the people who are trying to keep us safe,&#8221; Tlaib said.
Michigan House Republican leader Matt Hall, however, said that the Detroit Police Department&#8217;s action could prompt the state House to review the department&#8217;s policies, saying that firing the officers would be &#8220;unacceptable,&#8221; The Detroit News <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2026/02/19/michigan-house-detroit-police-officers-being-fired-for-calling-border-agents-immigration-detention/88760280007/">reported</a>.
After the board voted on Thursday to suspend the officers without pay, Bettison said he would no longer pursue firing the officers.
&#8220;This incident should make it clear, however, that as Chief, I will continue to vigorously enforce DPD&#8217;s policies,&#8221; he added.
While Detroit has not seen the same surge in federal immigration operations that cities like Minneapolis and Chicago have experienced, ICE agents <a href="https://bridgemi.com/michigan-government/ice-in-michigan-more-arrests-detainees-and-protests/">routinely arrest</a> suspected illegal immigrants in the Motor City and surrounding area.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a 28-year-old illegal alien woman convicted of sex crimes against a teenage boy on Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security told The Daily Wire.
ICE agents nabbed Michelle Rodriguez-Berrio, an illegal alien from Colombia, convicted in Utah for sexual contact with a 16- or 17-year-old boy. Rodriguez-Berrio was let into the country under former President Joe Biden in 2022, a DHS spokesman told The Daily Wire.
“In February 2022, this sexual predator alien illegally entered the U.S. and was encountered by Border Patrol. She was released into the U.S. by the Biden administration,” the spokesman said. “On January 26, 2026, Rodriguez was convicted by the Salt Lake City County District Court for the offense of Unlawful Sexual Conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old. Thanks to ICE, she is now off American streets and will remain in custody pending removal.”
Rodriguez-Berrio was one of the “worst of the worst” illegal alien offenders detained by ICE agents on Thursday. Others highlighted by DHS to The Daily Wire included:

“Even while facing doxing, threats, harassment and a more than 1,300% increase in assaults against them, ICE continues to go after criminal illegal aliens, including pedophiles, violent sex criminals and drug traffickers,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told The Daily Wire. “Nearly 70% of all ICE arrests are of illegal aliens convicted or charged of a crime in the U.S. If you break the law, you will face the consequences. Criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S.”
Millions of illegal aliens were released into the United States during the Biden administration, many of whom went on to commit crimes, including Jose Antonio Ibarra, the Venezuelan national who murdered 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley.

The Biden administration waved in an illegal immigrant and shielded him from deportation before he allegedly attempted to kill a woman by drowning her at a Florida beach, The Daily Wire has exclusively learned.
Venezuelan illegal immigrant Said Alexander Hernandez Gonzalez, 26, allegedly preyed upon the woman, who was walking as she talked on the phone with her sister on Tiger Shores Beach in Stuart at about 11 p.m. last Thursday, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said during a Monday press conference.
The Biden administration paroled Hernandez Gonzalez into the United States in 2023 before granting him temporary protected status, preventing federal authorities from deporting him, the Department of Homeland Security told The Daily Wire Thursday.
“Said Alexander Hernandez Gonzalez — a product of the Biden administration’s open-border policies brutally attacked a woman on the beach and attempted to drown and kill her,” Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement shared with The Daily Wire.
“She bravely fought back and survived this wicked attack. ICE has lodged an immigration detainer with the Martin County Sheriff’s office, and because of Florida’s cooperation with ICE, this sicko will never walk American streets again. Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S.,&#8221; she added.

Hernandez Gonzalez allegedly grabbed the woman by the throat as he pushed her into the ocean and tried to drown her during a 3-5 minute struggle before the woman lost consciousness, according to the sheriff.
&#8220;During that struggle, she punched him, she grabbed his groin area trying to get him to release her,&#8221; Budensiek said.
&#8220;He said he just held her down until she went limp,&#8221; he added.
The Venezuelan national then fled the scene, believing that he murdered her, according to the sheriff. She miraculously later awoke on the beach and located an officer nearby to report the attack.
Sheriff&#8217;s deputies searched the area for two days with no success.
But on Sunday night, a woman called the Port St. Lucie police department to report that her boyfriend was &#8220;suicidal,&#8221; Budensiek said. When police responded to the report, they encountered Hernandez Gonzalez, who claimed that he murdered a woman on a nearby beach.
Detectives with the Martin County sheriff&#8217;s office interviewed Hernandez Gonzalez, determining that he was the suspect in the drowning attack, according to Budensiek.
Hernandez Gonzalez told authorities he was at the beach, where he had been smoking marijuana and drinking &#8220;some vodka,&#8221; when he encountered the woman and began attacking her, the sheriff said.
He allegedly told investigators that &#8220;she made him angry, so he attacked her and drowned her&#8221; and that he only &#8220;stopped when he believed she was dead.&#8221;
Before he fled the scene, Hernandez Gonzalez &#8220;grabbed her cell phone and threw it into the ocean,&#8221; according to the sheriff&#8217;s office.
He then returned to his car, where he consumed more marijuana and vodka before leaving the area, authorities said.
&#8220;When asked if he was remorseful, Hernandez Gonzalez stated he felt nothing,&#8221; the sheriff&#8217;s office said.
Hernandez Gonzalez is charged with attempted murder.

<a href="https://www.mgaleg.maryland.gov/2026RS/fnotes/bil_0005/sb0245.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com">Senate Bill 245</a> and House Bill 444, functioning as companion &#8220;cross-filed&#8221; bills, prohibit the State of Maryland, its counties, municipalities, and local sheriffs from entering into or maintaining contracts, intergovernmental service agreements, or memoranda of understanding with the federal government to enforce civil immigration law. Most notably, the legislation targets the controversial 287(g) partnerships, which previously allowed local law enforcement officers to perform the functions of federal immigration agents.
Classified as emergency legislation, the law requires any jurisdiction currently operating under such an agreement to exercise its termination provision within 90 days.
Governor Moore, who had previously signaled his support for the measures, framed the signing as a step toward ensuring that all Marylanders feel protected by their local government. Supporters of the bills argued that entangling local police with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) eroded trust within immigrant communities, making residents less likely to report crimes or cooperate with investigations for fear of deportation.
&#8220;By removing local involvement in federal civil immigration enforcement, we are building a stronger bridge of trust between our law enforcement officers and the communities they serve,&#8221; proponents stated during the legislative session.
However, the move has not been without intense scrutiny. Opponents, including several county sheriffs and Republican lawmakers, raised significant concerns regarding public safety. They argued that programs like the Criminal Alien Program (CAP) are vital for identifying and removing incarcerated undocumented immigrants who may pose a threat to the community. Critics expressed fears that the loss of these federal partnerships would limit the ability of local authorities to keep &#8220;at-large&#8221; criminal offenders off the streets.
The legislation builds upon a foundation laid during a 2021 special session, which previously restricted the use of private detention facilities and limited when police could inquire about an individual&#8217;s immigration status during routine stops.
While the new law restricts active enforcement partnerships, it does not override federal mandates regarding the exchange of information. Under federal law, state and local entities are still prohibited from restricting the sharing of information regarding an individual’s citizenship or immigration status with ICE.
But the total ban on operational &#8220;immigration enforcement agreements&#8221; signals that Maryland has officially withdrawn its personnel and resources from the front lines of federal immigration control.

A man who injured a Customs and Border Protection officer by hurling rocks through a car window during last summer&#8217;s violent anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles County pleaded guilty on Tuesday to assaulting a federal officer. 
Elpidio Reyna, 41, admitted to one count of assault with a deadly or dangerous weapon resulting in bodily injury. He was one of the dozens arrested after riots erupted after Immigration and Customs Enforcement began enforcement operations in the Los Angeles area. 
“This defendant could have easily killed a federal officer or innocent bystander,” <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-cdca/pr/compton-man-pleads-guilty-assaulting-and-injuring-federal-officer-during-anti">said</a> First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli. “As he found out the hard way, violence against law enforcement is not constitutionally protected and will be met with swift justice. Those who engage in similar violence will be arrested, charged, and eventually convicted in a court of law.”
On June 7, 2025, Reyna joined a crowd throwing rocks and improvised explosives at federal officers operating near a Home Depot in Paramount, located about 11 miles north of Long Beach. 
“Protestors, including the defendant, began to throw rocks at the officers’ official vehicles, lit objects on fire, and impeded law enforcement activity. During this, defendant knowingly and intentionally lit objects on fire in the middle of the street and threw rocks at a convoy of law enforcement vehicles occupied by Customs and Border Protection Officers,” according to the plea agreement. 
One of the projectiles shattered a car window, cutting a Customs and Border Protection officer on the forehead. The FBI offered a $50,000 reward for Reyna after a special agent identified him through a review of TikTok videos. He was on the FBI&#8217;s most wanted list before <a href="https://x.com/USAttyEssayli/status/1948056678504767913">surrendering</a> at the U.S.-Mexico border on July 23. 
Reyna faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on August 7 by U.S. District Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha. He has remained in federal custody since July 2025. 
Dozens of arrests were made during the protests in June and July across the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas over federal immigration operations. The unrest prompted President Donald Trump to deploy the National Guard to protect federal personnel and property, setting off a prolonged legal battle with California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom over the troop deployment.

“I’ve not been able to celebrate because of what’s going on right now, with the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by ICE agents in Minnesota and the kidnapping of a five-year-old boy,” Mosaku <a href="https://www.thetimes.com/culture/film/article/wunmi-mosaku-sinners-interview-fm3xsw8c6">told</a> The Sunday Times in a recently published interview. “It’s difficult to hold both the nomination and the news because one feels beautiful and one is so dark and heavy; truly dystopian — how can I possibly go out and buy some drinks and enjoy the moment?”
“[My husband] is not as shocked as I am at the news,” the actress went on. “There’s a very strange American psyche where terrible things happen and people still can go to work the next day, whereas I’m floored for a week and think, ‘How are people going to crowded places when this has just happened?’ I want a cocoon. My reaction reminds him that this is not normal.”
Mosaku was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 2026 Academy Awards. The Oscars, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will be held on March 15.
Many Hollywood stars have weighed in with their thoughts on the enforcement of immigration laws, with several showing up to events wearing anti-ICE buttons and making impassioned speeches.
Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny said during his Grammys acceptance speech: “Before I say thanks to God, I’m going to say: ICE out. We are not savage. We are not animals. We are not aliens. We are humans, and we are American.”
“Every day I think I’m not going to be shocked anymore and then I’m shocked,” actress Jamie Lee Curtis <a href="https://variety.com/2026/politics/columns/jamie-lee-curtis-ice-abhorrence-distraction-epstein-files-1236653979/">told</a> Variety earlier this month, adding that she believes it’s an “abhorrence.”
“It’s just inhuman. It is inhuman the way this administration is treating its citizens and its constituents and people in need,” she said. “The ICE situation is out of control. It’s simply a distraction so that we don’t pay attention to the Epstein files.”
At Sundance Film Festival last month, “Don’t Worry Darling” actress Olivia Wilde suggested that ICE is a criminal organization.
“We can’t go another day accepting this as our new norm. It’s outrageous. People are being murdered, and I don’t want to normalize seeing that violence—on the internet or on film. It’s hideous. If we can do anything to support the movement to cast ICE out and delegitimize this criminal organization, then that’s what we should be doing,” she said at the time.
“Game of Thrones” actor Peter Dinklage recited an extremely cringeworthy poem dedicated to Renee Good, the anti-ICE activist killed by an ICE agent during an altercation in Minneapolis. Singer Bruce Springsteen released a protest song last month that included the lyric, “ICE out of Minneapolis.”

Eighth-grade students at a Minnesota middle school were taught in geography class that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents use “tricky &amp; violent tactics,” and were given extra credit for watching a British-produced video on the problem of illegal immigration in the United States.
Materials <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/minnesota-eighth-graders-shown-videos-of-ice-arrests-and-alleged-harassment-of-u-s-citizens-principal-says-its-part-of-state-geography-standards/">obtained</a> by Defending Education show that the students at Hermantown Community School were given a highly politicized lesson on illegal immigration and ICE operations. The materials included a PowerPoint that adopted left-wing talking points on immigration and a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UznGbkMcEGw&amp;t=1s">video</a> produced by a British broadcaster on ICE operations in Chicago.
The instruction at the Duluth-area school took place in December 2025 and featured a PowerPoint where students were asked: “In what ways do people think the Ice agents have ‘gone too far’?”
The answer said that ICE agents use “tricky &amp; violent tactics,” that people have died in ICE custody, that agents have not filed “proper paperwork to track arrests,” and wear “masks to hide identities,” according to slides shared with The Daily Wire by Defending Education.

One slide alleged that detainees were being placed “in overcrowded &amp; inhumane detention centers: super hot or cold, lights on 24/7, solitary confinement in a 2&#215;2 foot box, overflowing toilets, long term shackling &#8230; lacking medical care.” That slide also featured a graphic of a poster claiming the United States was “torturing migrants and asylum seekers.”

Another slide downplayed the crime of illegally crossing into the United States.
“The government said they were going to focus on undocumented CRIMINALS, but they are actually deporting mostly otherwise law-abiding undocumented people,” the slide read.

In an email obtained by Defending Education, Middle School Principal William Wietman said the presentation was in line with state geography guidelines.
“All of our social studies classes have a current events component to them and this information is part of the MN standards in geography,” he wrote.
Nicole Neily, founder and president of Defending Education, told The Daily Wire that the presentation was an example of students being subjected to leftist politics while in the classroom.
&#8220;It&#8217;s bad enough that this biased lesson is replete with falsehoods — but [for] the school principal to defend such garbage truly adds insult to injury,” she said. “Students are being force-fed ideological propaganda during finite lesson time (when they&#8217;re not being encouraged by activist teachers to walk out of their classrooms, that is) and told what to think, rather than how to think. It&#8217;s little wonder that families are fleeing the public education system in droves.”
Students in the class were also given an opportunity to watch a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UznGbkMcEGw&amp;t=1s">19-minute video</a> on their own time for extra credit. The video was produced by the British government-owned broadcaster “Channel 4 News.”
The narrator of the video said that those detained by ICE were denied “due process” and that President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration could “forever” change “America&#8217;s reputation as the land of the free.” He claimed that Trump wasn’t focused on “keeping people out” but “kicking them out instead.”
The British host also claimed that “most people in the U.S. without legal immigration status aren&#8217;t criminals,” ignoring the fact that they broke the law by sneaking into the country.
Another slide linked to a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGS90uRQOpY">video</a> from 2016 called “TRUMP IS WRONG: The USA Is ALREADY Great!” One of the reasons cited was having the “world’s largest immigrant population,” and that this “diversity” meant “we get to eat delicious food.”
Part of the <a href="https://files-backend.assets.thrillshare.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/2076/Hcs/a5fc7d2a-bff6-4408-ac9a-7a277cd6dc4b/601_School_District_Curriculum_and_Instruction.pdf?disposition=inline">stated goals</a> of Hermantown Community Schools is to use a curriculum that is “antiracist” and “culturally sustaining.” It defines antiracist as “actively working to identify and eliminate racism in all forms in order to change policies, behaviors, and beliefs that perpetuate racist ideas and actions,” and “culturally sustaining” as integrating the practices of “Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities who have been and continue to be harmed and erased through the education system.”

Border Czar Tom Homan responded forcefully on Sunday to questions about Department of Homeland Security funding, arguing that Democrat demands on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are unreasonable.
Appearing on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” Homan was asked about which demands from the Democrats he and the Trump administration would consider as the White House and Congress battle over DHS funding.
“Among other things, they&#8217;d like to require immigration agents to show identification, wear body cameras, take off their masks, stop racial profiling, and seek judicial warrants to enter private property. Which, if any, of those asks is the president, are you willing to consider adopting?” host Ed O’Keefe asked.
After noting that he’s not part of the ongoing negotiations, Homan shut down the notion that ICE is racially profiling and argued that many of the requests are non-starters.
“When they say, ‘stop racial profiling,’ that&#8217;s just not occurring. ICE will detain, briefly detain, and question somebody based on reasonable suspicion — [it] has nothing to do with racial profiling,” Homan said.
“As far as a mask … I don&#8217;t like the masks either, but because [assaults] against ICE officers are up over 1,500%, and threats are up over 8,000%, these men and women have to protect themselves,” the border czar added.
Homan further noted that while immigration agents do identify which agency they’re from, they simply don’t provide their names.
“Why don’t they talk about maybe passing legislation to make it illegal to dox agents or something like that,” Homan said. “But the masks right now are for officer safety reasons.”
O’Keefe pressed, noting that law enforcement elsewhere don’t wear masks.
“You know, cops go out every day, everywhere across the country,&#8221; he said, asking why ICE has to &#8220;wear all that and protect themselves when there are others out there wearing badges that don&#8217;t have to do that?”
Homan pushed back strongly.
“I don&#8217;t know of another law enforcement agency in the country that has an 8,000% increase in threats. Just yesterday, the director of ICE, his wife was filmed walking to work, his home address has been doxed, his kids have been doxed and filmed,” Homan said. “And look, let&#8217;s remember why we&#8217;re here. We&#8217;re here because the last four years, over ten million illegal aliens crossed that border, released into this country unvetted. ICE has to do a law enforcement response to deal with the last four years of open borders, where they claim the border was secure every day and it wasn’t.&#8221;

In a move that surprises absolutely no one familiar with his performative antics, California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom took to social media this week to take a victory lap for a race he arguably lost.
The battleground was a federal courtroom in Los Angeles, where Senior U.S. District Judge Christina A. Snyder — a Clinton appointee, no less — delivered a split decision on Monday regarding California’s blatant attempt to hamstring federal immigration enforcement. At the heart of the conflict were two pieces of legislation: the &#8220;No Secret Police Act,&#8221; which sought to ban ICE agents from wearing masks, and the &#8220;No Vigilantes Act,&#8221; which mandates visible identification.
Newsom, ever the master of the &#8220;alternative win,&#8221; crowed on X, “A federal court just upheld California’s law REQUIRING federal agents to identify themselves. California will keep standing up for civil rights and our democracy.”

But as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Harmeet Dhillon was quick to point out, the governor’s celebratory rhetoric was little more than a thin veil for a legal drubbing. The most aggressive component of California’s anti-ICE agenda, the mask ban, was unceremoniously blocked. The Trump administration’s Department of Justice argued that stripping federal agents of their masks wasn&#8217;t about &#8220;transparency,&#8221; but about exposing federal officers to harassment, doxing, and physical violence.
Attorney General Pam Bondi hailed the injunction, writing, “ANOTHER key court victory thanks to our outstanding @TheJusticeDept  attorneys. Judge Snyder’s ruling hinged on the fact that California’s law was a textbook case of federal discrimination. The state attempted to force federal agents to show their faces while conveniently exempting its own state law enforcement officers from the same standard. This violation of the Supremacy Clause meant the &#8220;No Secret Police Act&#8221; died on the vine because the state tried to play by a different set of rules than the ones it demanded for the feds.
Professor of Law Jonathan Turley noted, “As some of us previously noted, the California law requiring ICE agents to remove their masks has been found unconstitutional. Still, in my view, the discrimination rationale of Judge Christina Snyder (a Clinton appointee) is too narrow. Snyder left in place other provisions that the Administration could challenge. While Newsom tries to spin the leftover &#8220;ID badge&#8221; requirement as a monumental triumph, the reality remains: the federal government successfully stopped California from dictating the operational safety of federal agents. Newsom can brag all he wants, but as Dhillon and Bondi made clear, the law-and-order agenda just secured a major foothold in the Ninth Circuit’s backyard.
