Prosecutors preparing to try the 28-year-old man accused of killing four University of Idaho students previously demanded Amazon turn over customer information about the suspect, new court records show.
The suspect, who is not being named by The Daily Wire, has been charged with murdering Ethan Chapin, 20; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Madison Mogen, 21, in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022.
The new released records show that prosecutors demanded in May that Amazon turn over the suspect’s customer information relating to the alleged purchase of knives. Prosecutors had obtained search warrants for customer accounts associated with the suspect at companies including Amazon, Apple, and PayPal, CNN <a href="https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2023/09/28/us/bryan-kohberger-trial-idaho-murders/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The three companies sent over the requested information, after which it was inventoried and placed into evidence by the Moscow Police Department.
The warrants included requests for &#8220;all detailed customer click activity pertaining to knives and accessories,&#8221; along with other information that could show the suspect’s shopping movements and interests on the site, ABC News reported. This was done, the warrants said, &#8220;in order to locate any materials referencing the planning or commission&#8221; of the crime that occurred in November.
The warrant for Apple included a request for instant messages and the contents of files and records stored on iCloud. The warrant for PayPal requested payment information and recipients of any financial transactions, as well as associated information.
The accused has no definite trial date, as the original October start date has been pushed back.

“[The suspect] has long had a habit of going for drives alone. Often he would go for drives at night. He did so late on November 12 and into November 13, 2022,” Anne Taylor, the suspect’s attorney, wrote in the filing. “[The suspect] is not claiming to be at a specific location at a specific time; at this time there is not a specific witness to say precisely where [my client] was at each moment of the hours between late night November 12, 2022, and early morning November 13, 2022. He was out, driving during the late night and early morning hours of November 12-13, 2022.”
Part of the evidence that led to the suspect’s arrest, mentioned in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/heres-how-police-captured-the-man-suspected-of-killing-four-university-of-idaho-students" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously unsealed</a> probable cause affidavit, showed that police were able to narrow the timeframe of the crime to between 4:00 a.m. and 4:25 a.m. and reviewed video footage taken in the area in the time before and after the murders are believed to have occurred. The footage showed a white Hyundai Elantra without a front license plate (front license plates are required in Washington and Idaho, but not in Pennsylvania, where the car was registered) in the area between 3:29 a.m. and 4:20 a.m.
The vehicle can be seen passing the off-campus residence three times before returning a fourth time around 4:04 a.m. and attempting to turn around on the road. The vehicle was next seen around 4:20 a.m. traveling away from the direction of the off-campus residence at high speed, heading in the direction of a road that eventually leads to Pullman, Washington, where the suspect attended Washington State University (WSU).
Video footage from the WSU campus showed a white Hyundai Elantra leaving the area and heading toward Moscow at around 2:53 a.m. This vehicle was again observed on five cameras in Pullman and the WSU campus at around 5:25 a.m.
Police pulled records for white Hyundai Elantras registered at WSU on November 29 – just over two weeks after the murders were committed – and found one belonging to the man who was eventually arrested. Police reviewed the owner’s Washington state driver’s license and determined he matched the suspect’s physical description provided by one of the surviving roommates.
Police matched the suspect to the vehicle through two previous traffic stops in the months before the murders. They also learned that the suspect registered his car in Washington and received Washington plates on November 18 – five days after the murders.
In a previous filing, the suspect’s attorneys claimed that DNA found at the crime scene may have been planted by police.
“The State’s argument asks this Court and [the suspect] to assume – is that the DNA on the sheath was placed there by [the suspect], and not someone else during an investigation that spans hundreds of members of law enforcement and apparently at least one lab the State refuses to name,” the suspect’s defense attorneys wrote.

A former friend of the 28-year-old man suspected of killing four University of Idaho students says the suspect would get “frustrated” by women and discuss his depression.
The friend, Jack Baylis, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/bryan-kohbergers-former-friend-fox-nation-murder-suspect-frustrated-towards-women.amp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox Nation’s Nancy Grace in a new special that he and the suspect felt “frustrated” when dating and a woman would “ghost” them. Ghosting occurs when one person simply stops answering the other.
The suspect has been charged with murdering Ethan Chapin, 20; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Madison Mogen, 21, in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022. It is suspected that he followed the three female victims on Instagram.
Baylis said that the suspect would sometimes message him about being “depressed,” saying the suspect “developed a weird sense of meaning.” Baylis also said the suspect was an “aggressive” drunk to the point that friends would hide his car keys. His friend also said the suspect would do “other sketchy drugs.”
Steve Goncalves, father of victim Kaylee, told Fox News that he was informed that the suspect was receiving special treatment in prison.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve been informed that his pretrial privileges, like his five suits, video and computer special treatment and vegan meals are unprecedented in the history of Idaho,&#8221; he said.
NewsNation’s Brian Entin, however, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-idaho-murder-suspect-not-getting-special-treatment-behind-bars-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on the network show “Banfield,” that the suspect is not receiving anything that other inmates don’t also get.
According to Entin, the suspected killer has access to a computer – but not the internet – so that he can read documents relating to his case. This is the same access given to other inmates, who can also respond to documents through their attorneys.

Prosecutors leading the case against the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students have contacted the FBI to investigate one of the defense’s expert witnesses.
Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson sought the FBI’s help investigating the expert witness, who allegedly gave contradictory testimony, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/fbi-investigates-key-witness-bryan-kohberger-defense" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Prosecutors contacted the FBI instead of cross-examining the witness, Gabriella Vargas, an expert on genetic genealogy.
Vargas testified during an August 18 hearing about alleged issues with the DNA evidence in the case, and just days later, the FBI showed up at her door, the suspect’s attorneys said.
&#8220;Last night she was visited by two FBI agents and interrogated about her testimony and the findings of her declaration,&#8221; said the suspect’s attorney, Anne Taylor, during a hearing in August. &#8220;That, in our view, impacts [the suspect’s] due process rights.&#8221;
The Daily Wire is not naming the 28-year-old suspect due to a policy aimed at depriving mass killers of the notoriety they so often crave.
Thompson filed an explanation for the FBI’s involvement last week, saying that investigators allegedly heard through Vargas’ colleagues that &#8220;she was reneging on some of the things she was testifying to in court,&#8221; according to Fox.
&#8220;When we heard of that, I reached out to investigators and asked, ‘Can you find out what is going on?’&#8221; Thompson said. &#8220;The FBI indeed undertook an investigation, and other reports are that Ms. Vargas claimed that some of what was in her declaration she had inadvertently agreed [to] or signed without fully reading it.&#8221;

FBI Investigating Key Witness For Accused University Of Idaho Killer

Randy Weaver was a former Army Green Beret who, in the late ’70s, worked in an Iowa factory, providing for his wife, Vicki, and their children. A devout religious family, the Weavers decided to leave Iowa and move to Ruby Ridge in Idaho, just 50 miles from the Canadian border, believing the apocalypse was coming. They built a small cabin on the top of the mountain and lived there for years with little incident.
In 1984, however, a dispute with a neighbor ended with the neighbor being ordered to pay Weaver $2,100. Furious, this neighbor wrote letters to the FBI, Secret Service, and county sheriff claiming Weaver had threatened to kill the pope, President Ronald Reagan, and the Idaho governor.
Charges were never filed, but the investigation led to questions about Weaver’s association with the neo-Nazi group known as Aryan Nations. While Weaver and his family had attended some of their meetings socially, he was never a member.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) used this connection to entrap Weaver. A confidential ATF informant attended the World Aryan Congress, his first time attending. He had been invited by Frank Kumnick, a known associate of Aryan Nations and a previous ATF target. While at this Congress, the ATF informant started talking to Weaver, and the two would continue to meet several times.
In October 1989, the informant claimed Weaver had sold him two sawed-off shotguns – a federal crime. It is widely believed that Weaver was not a man regularly altering shotguns and selling them, but that he had been coerced into doing so by the ATF informant.
The ATF informant’s handler, Herb Byerly, in June 1990 used the weapon charge as leverage to force Weaver to act as his new informant. Weaver refused to be a “snitch” and was charged for the sawed-off shotguns. The ATF also claimed that Weaver had several criminal convictions and had robbed banks, claims that were later determined to be false by a 1995 Senate investigation into the events of August 1992.
In December 1990, a federal grand jury indicted Weaver for making and possessing illegal firearms. He was not indicted for selling those firearms.
Based on its own false claims, the ATF decided it was too dangerous to arrest Weaver at his home, so they once again tricked him. Agents posing as motorists who had broken down on the side of the road arrested Weaver when he and his wife stopped to help them, putting them face down in the snow. Weaver was released on bail and told his trial would begin on February 19, 1991. Through court maneuvering, the start date moved and Weaver became confused. Weaver didn’t show up, but believing he may have thought the trial date was moved to March 20, the United States Marshals Service (USMS), agreed to wait until after that day before arresting Weaver for failure to appear in court. On March 14, however, the U.S. Attorney’s Office called a grand jury to indict Weaver for not appearing.
Once the case was in the U.S. Marshal’s hands – as Weaver was now considered a fugitive – they were not informed that the ATF had attempted to make Weaver an informant.
Believing that he would not receive a fair trial based on everything that had happened so far, Weaver refused to appear for his trial. At one point, his defense attorney erroneously told him that if he lost at trial he would lose his land, leaving his wife homeless, and the government would take his children.
Weaver’s distrust in the government grew exponentially after this, and he refused to surrender when U.S. Marshals attempted to contact him. Over the next year, U.S. Marshals made numerous attempts to negotiate Weaver’s surrender, using third parties and posing as potential property buyers.
During this time, the Marshals also developed a Threat Source Profile on Weaver that painted him as an anti-government radical who was armed and dangerous. It included a psychological profile completed by someone who had never met Weaver and knew so little about the case that he called him “Mr. Randall.”
Beginning in March of 1992, U.S. Marshals sent surveillance teams to set up cameras around the Weaver’s property to record their activity. Marshals saw that Weaver and his family would take up armed positions whenever a vehicle or visitor arrived on their property – but would lower their weapons once they recognized the person.
On April 18, 1992, a helicopter flew over Weaver’s property after being hired by Geraldo Rivera’s news program at the time, “Now It Can Be Told.” U.S. Marshals claimed they received reports that Weaver shot at the helicopter, but the Marshals’ own surveillance team on the property that day reported no shots. Weaver also denied the reports, and the helicopter pilot told the FBI that Weaver didn’t shoot at his helicopter. But U.S. Marshals and the FBI used these false claims as justification for the rules of engagement it would follow when moving onto Weaver’s property to arrest him.

Three months later, after Henry E. Hudson was confirmed as the new head of USMS, six Marshals went to Weaver’s property on August 21, 1992, to scout out places where Weaver could be arrested away from his cabin. The team, dressed in military camouflage and carrying M16 rifles, at one point threw some rocks to test Weaver’s dog’s reaction. The dogs barked, and Weaver’s friend Kevin Harris, as well as Weaver’s 14-year-old son Sammy, followed the dogs to investigate. Weaver took a different route to follow the dogs, all hoping the dogs had found some deer.
At this point, the stories diverge. Weaver and Harris claimed that Harris and Sammy found the heavily armed Marshals, and that their dog, Striker, started barking at the Marshals. The Marshals shot and killed Striker. Sammy then allegedly fired a shot near the Marshals and yelled at them about killing his dog, which prompted the Marshals to begin shooting. Sammy tried to run up the nearby hill and was shot in the back by U.S. Marshal Larry Cooper. He died instantly.
The U.S. Marshals claimed that they gave the Weaver a surrender order and that Harris began firing at them, so they fired back and ended up killing Sammy and Striker. At this time, Harris shot U.S. Marshal William Degan in the chest and killed him.
Weaver and Harris returned to the cabin and told Weaver’s wife Vicki what happened. She and Weaver reportedly went out to get Sammy’s body and bring him back into the cabin, with the family grieving his death. They had to put his body in a shed near the main cabin because they couldn’t leave the property.
Now the Marshals, ATF, and the FBI were involved, with agents sent to the Weavers’ property. Ten FBI snipers were dispatched to surround the property, and the FBI and Marshal Service approved a special rules of engagement draft that allowed agents to use deadly force if any adult on the property is seen with a weapon after they had been told to fire. The draft also said any dog on the property could be shot if any agent is “compromised” by the dog. The draft also noted that if anyone on the property presented the threat of death or grievous bodily harm other than Weaver, Harris, or Vicki, then the FBI’s rules of deadly force would apply meaning they could be killed in order to prevent death or grievous bodily injury to someone else.
Further, agents could kill any “adult male” if they were seen with a weapon and if the shot would not endanger Weaver’s children.

For 11 days a standoff ensued. On August 22, before negotiators arrived, FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi opened fire at the Weavers. He shot Weaver in the back while he was lifting the latch on the shed to visit Sam’s body. The bullet exited Weaver’s right armpit. Horiuchi later testified that he had been aiming for Weaver’s spine, but that Weaver moved at the last second.
Weaver had been out with his 16-year-old daughter Sara and Harris when the shot was fired. They ran back to the cabin, and Horiuchi fired another shot, this time striking Harris in the chest. This bullet also killed Vicki Weaver, who had been standing at the cabin door when Harris entered. She was holding her 10-month-old baby Elisheba.
In “American Experience: Ruby Ridge,” a documentary that aired on PBS in 2020, Sara Weaver described the moment her mother was murdered.
“And I felt things hit my face, and Mom dropped next to me,” Sara said, her voice breaking as she held back tears. “It took me a second to comprehend that mom had just died and that it was parts of her that had hit my face.”
Weaver picked up the baby and gave her to one of his other daughters so that he could help pull Vicki’s body into the cabin.
“We were being hunted, that’s how it felt,” Sara added.
Horiuchi was charged with manslaughter for the killing of Vicki, but the charges were later dismissed despite so many people witnessing the shooting.
In the early days of the siege, media outlets were only able to receive information from government sources, so their coverage was skewed as a white supremacist shooting federal agents. The narrative began to shift when the FBI told reporters it had found 14-year-old Sammy Weaver’s body.
Hostage negotiators didn’t know that Vicki had died until days later, so they kept directing their negotiations toward her, believing she would be the one to talk Weaver into surrendering. 
Inside the Weaver household, with Vicki lying dead on the floor, the family believed the government was taunting them when it continued to speak to Vicki. Sara said her father wanted to yell at the negotiators for doing this, but she stopped him because she truly believed agents would shoot her father if he went near a window.
“They had proven that they were there to shoot us,” Sara said.
With no solution in sight, and the FBI finally realizing that the intelligence they had been given about Weaver was inaccurate, they called in James Gordon “Bo” Gritz, a retired U.S. Army Special Forces officer who was known to associate with Right-wing militia groups, to talk to Weaver.
After Gritz’s first discussion with the Weavers, he returned to the FBI agents and told them they had really messed things up and that Vicki was dead and Weaver and Harris were wounded. Eventually, Gritz convinced Weaver to send Harris out so that he could get medical attention, and brought a body bag to remove Vicki’s body from the cabin. As Sara Weaver described, the entire family grieved as they took Vicki away.
Weaver became adamant that he and his daughters would not leave the cabin due to the deaths of Sammy and Vicki, but Gritz refused to leave as well, and was eventually able to get Weaver to leave the cabin with his daughters.
Sara said she fully expected to die when they left the cabin, believing she and her sisters would be shot by government agents. When they left, they passed the military encampment that had been set up to handle the Weaver situation, saying it “made no sense” to have such a large presence for their little family.
Weaver and Harris were charged with numerous offenses, with Harris being charged with first-degree murder for the death of U.S. Marshal Bill Degan. Both were acquitted on all charges, except Weaver was found guilty of the original charge for missing his court date and violating his bail conditions. He spent 16 months in prison and was fined $10,000.
In 1995, the Government Accountability Office and the U.S. Senate investigated the siege on the Weavers and presented a report that found numerous errors by law enforcement, including deeming the rules of engagement to be unconstitutional.
Weaver and his daughters sued the federal government for the wrongful death of his wife and 14-year-old son. In August 1995, Weaver settled for $100,000 and each of his three daughters received $1 million. They had asked for $200 million.
Randy Weaver died on May 11, 2022, at the age of 74, just shy of the 30-year anniversary of the siege.

A defense attorney for the 28-year-old man accused of killing four University of Idaho students continues to question the validity of DNA found on a knife sheath at the crime scene.
Anne Taylor, the defense attorney, on Friday again argued that the prosecution had not provided full DNA information from the crime, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bryan-kohberger-idaho-student-stabbings-suspect-attorneys-question-validity-knife-sheath-dna/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
&#8220;They have provided full DNA discovery for the sheath, the knife sheath, but not the other three unidentified male DNA samples,&#8221; she told the judge, referring to DNA from three men she said was found at the off-campus residence in Moscow, Idaho.
In court, prosecutors countered by saying they had turned over everything they had.
&#8220;We have given the defense everything that we have received from the lab. They&#8217;ve asked for DNA work-ups on other people. To the extent that they don&#8217;t have them, they weren&#8217;t done,&#8221; Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson argued. &#8220;We can&#8217;t produce something that doesn&#8217;t exist.&#8221;
In a June court filing, the suspect’s other attorney, Jay Weston Logsdon, filed a <a href="https://www.insideedition.com/sites/default/files/inline-files/061623%20States%20Motion%20for%20Protective%20Order.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">motion</a> objecting to the prosecutor’s attempts to avoid turning over a detailed breakdown of how authorities used genetic genealogy to link the accused to the murders. Logsdon wrote in the motion that investigators found DNA from three other men in the off-campus residence where Ethan Chapin, 20; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Madison Mogen, 21, were murdered in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022. DNA from two men was found inside the house, while DNA from a third man was found outside the home on a glove, the filing says, according to <a href="https://www.insideedition.com/bryan-kohberger-defense-dna-suspects-glove-murder-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Inside Edition</a>.
None of the three reported samples match the suspect’s DNA, though it is unknown when this particular DNA was left at the home, which was the location of frequent parties.
The suspect and his attorney say these DNA samples were never run through the national DNA database to find a match.
Prosecutors have argued that they didn’t need to turn over detailed information about how genetic genealogy was used to link the suspect to the crimes since a DNA sample provided by the suspect directly matched DNA found on a knife sheath found at the crime scene. The genetic genealogy wouldn’t be used at trial, prosecutors argued.
Once police had their suspect, they tracked him to his parents’ house in Pennsylvania and collected garbage from the outside trash cans. They obtained DNA that partially matched the DNA collected from the knife sheath, indicating they had the DNA of the suspect’s father. Collecting DNA from the suspect later directly linked him to the sheath. The sheath was found on a bed next to Goncalves and Mogen’s bodies, partially under one of them. The type of knife the sheath held would have been consistent with the knife used to murder the four victims.
In July, the suspect’s defense attorneys <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/idaho-murder-suspect-claims-dna-may-have-been-planted-at-crime-scene-by-cops" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> that their client’s DNA may have been planted at the scene by police but could not explain why he would have been targeted for the crime.
Earlier this month, defense attorneys <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/accused-university-of-idaho-killer-offers-alibi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">provided an alibi</a> for the suspect, saying he was simply out driving around in the middle of the night when the crime occurred.

“[The suspect] has long had a habit of going for drives alone. Often he would go for drives at night. He did so late on November 12 and into November 13, 2022,” attorney Anne Taylor wrote in the filing. “[The suspect] is not claiming to be at a specific location at a specific time; at this time there is not a specific witness to say precisely where [my client] was at each moment of the hours between late night November 12, 2022, and early morning November 13, 2022. He was out, driving during the late night and early morning hours of November 12-13, 2022.”
Part of the evidence that led to the suspect’s arrest, mentioned in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/heres-how-police-captured-the-man-suspected-of-killing-four-university-of-idaho-students" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously unsealed</a> probable cause affidavit, showed that police were able to narrow the timeframe of the crime to between 4:00 a.m. and 4:25 a.m. and reviewed video footage taken in the area in the time before and after the murders are believed to have occurred. The footage showed a white Hyundai Elantra without a front license plate (front license plates are required in Washington and Idaho, but not in Pennsylvania, where the car was registered) in the area between 3:29 a.m. and 4:20 a.m. The vehicle can be seen passing the off-campus residence three times before returning a fourth time around 4:04 a.m. and attempting to turn around on the road. The vehicle was next seen around 4:20 a.m. traveling away from the direction of the off-campus residence at high speed heading in the direction of a road that eventually leads to Pullman, Washington, where the suspect attended Washington State University (WSU).
Video footage from the WSU campus showed a white Hyundai Elantra leaving the area and heading toward Moscow at around 2:53 a.m. This vehicle was again observed on five cameras in Pullman and the WSU campus at around 5:25 a.m.
Police pulled records for white Hyundai Elantras registered at WSU on November 29 – just over two weeks after the murders were committed – and found one belonging to the man who was eventually arrested for the crime. Police reviewed the owner’s Washington state driver’s license and determined he matched the physical description of the suspect provided by one of the surviving roommates.
Police matched the suspect to the vehicle through two previous traffic stops in the months before the murders. They also said that the suspect registered his vehicle in Washington and received Washington plates on November 18 – five days after the murders.

Accused University Of Idaho Killer Offers Alibi

Lori Vallow Daybell, the Idaho mom found guilty of killing her kids and conspiring to kill her fifth husband’s first wife, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday without the possibility of parole.
Vallow Daybell, 50, received a life sentence for the murders of each of her children; her 16-year-old daughter, Tylee Ryan, and 7-year-old adopted son, J.J. She also received a life sentence for conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Tammy Daybell, who was her current husband Chad Daybell’s ex-wife. Each of those three sentences will be served consecutively, while the judge added two additional life sentences and a 10-year sentence for grand theft, all to be served concurrently, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/31/us/lori-vallow-daybell-sentencing/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
“Murder is the most serious offense, and the most unimaginable type of murder is to have a mother murdering her own children, and that’s exactly what you did,” Judge Steven W. Boyce said when handing down Vallow Daybell’s sentence. “You were involved in and guilty of conspiring to murder … Tammy Daybell, who had children of her own. And despite the jury convicting you with overwhelming evidence, you still sit here before the court today and said you didn’t do it.”
The judge noted that Vallow Daybell showed no remorse for the murders.
Vallow Daybell denied killing her children and cited religious texts during her sentencing.
“Jesus Christ knows that no one was murdered in this case,” she said, according to CNN. “Accidental deaths happen, suicides happen, fatal side effects from medications happen.”
In May, a jury deliberated for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/doomsday-mom-lori-vallow-daybell-found-guilty-of-murdering-kids-conspiring-to-kill-husbands-former-wife" target="_blank" rel="noopener">less than a day</a> before finding Vallow Daybell guilty of murdering her children.
Chad Daybell goes on trial later this year. He faces the same charges.
Colby Ryan, Vallow Daybell’s oldest son from a previous marriage, wrote in a victim impact statement that “Tylee and JJ brought so much light into this world.”
“Tylee will never have an opportunity to become a mother, wife, or have the career she was destined to have. She’ll never be able to have the life she deserved,” he wrote in the statement, which was read by prosecutors on Monday. “JJ will never be able to grow and spread his light with this world the way he did. He will never have a chance to grow up.”
“I want them to be remembered for who they were,” Ryan added, “and not to be just a spectacle or a headline to the world.”
Relatives began searching for the children in September 2019, when Vallow Daybell, along with Tylee and J.J., moved to Rexburg, Idaho, to be closer to Chad Daybell, the author of several doomsday books, who said a voice told him to move there for the second coming of Christ. On September 8, 2019, Vallow Daybell and her brother Alex, took Tylee and J.J. to Yellowstone National Park. Tylee was never seen alive again.
Two weeks later, on September 23, J.J., who is autistic, was last seen at his school in Idaho. The next day, Vallow Daybell informed the school that he would be homeschooled instead.
Shortly after this, Chad’s wife, Tammy, was found dead in her home. Her death was initially ruled to be natural, but police have since opened an investigation into the matter.
Less than a month after Tammy died, Vallow Daybell married Chad Daybell in Hawaii.
Three weeks later, after Vallow Daybell and Daybell returned to Idaho, police conducted a welfare check on J.J. at the request of his grandmother. According to police, Vallow Daybell said that J.J. was with friends in Arizona and that Tylee had gone to Brigham Young University-Idaho. People then began to question where J.J. and Tylee had gone, and suddenly, Vallow Daybell and Daybell packed up and traveled to Hawaii on the same day police began searching for the children, court documents indicate.
Not long after, on December 12, Vallow Daybell’s brother Alex died in Gilbert, Arizona, due to a reported blood clot. His death was not investigated further, as the condition ran in the family.

On December 20, police in Rexburg officially announced an investigation into the disappearance of J.J. and Tylee. A month later, Vallow Daybell was served a court order to produce the children within five days.
When the deadline to produce the children passed, police began laying the groundwork to arrest Vallow Daybell. They did so on February 20, 2020, arresting Vallow Daybell in Kauai and charging her with two felony counts of desertion and nonsupport of dependent children.
It wasn’t until June 9, 2020, when police searched Chad Daybell’s property in Idaho, that the bodies of Tylee and J.J. were found. Daybell tried to flee the scene but was caught and charged with two felony counts of destruction, alteration, or concealment of evidence.

‘Doomsday Cult’ Mom Sentenced To Life In Prison For Murdering Her Children

The man accused of killing four University of Idaho students claims that DNA found at the scene may have been planted by police.

The filing is the latest in the defense’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/accused-idaho-killer-lays-groundwork-for-defense-says-other-dna-found-at-crime-scene" target="_blank" rel="noopener">battle to obtain</a> detailed information about how prosecutors used genetic genealogy to link the suspect to the crimes. Prosecutors have argued previously that they didn’t need to turn over detailed information since a DNA sample provided by the suspect directly matched DNA found on the knife sheath. The genetic genealogy wouldn’t be used at trial, prosecutors argued.
Prosecutors responded to the defense’s most recent attempt to obtain that information by writing in its own filing that “the State is at a loss as to how that theory supports a claim that the lGG information is material to the preparation of his defense.”
DNA expert Kristen Slaper told the Law &amp; Crime Network’s Angenette Levy that planting the suspect’s DNA on the knife sheath would take quite a bit of planning.
“Nobody knew who did this and I think that’s important because in order for something to be planted, it has to be pretty planned out,” Slaper told the outlet. “To plant someone’s DNA you have to have their DNA first of all. You have to have an item that their DNA is on and know that only their DNA would be found on it.”
The suspect’s defense had previously pointed to other DNA found at the crime scene in an attempt to suggest someone else was responsible for the murders of Ethan Chapin, 20; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Madison Mogen, 21, in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022. Defense attorneys for the 28-year-old man accused of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/homicide">killing</a> four University of Idaho <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/students">students</a> last November have begun laying the groundwork for their case.
The suspect, who is not being named per Daily Wire policy, and his defense attorney, Jay Weston Logsdon, filed a <a href="https://www.insideedition.com/sites/default/files/inline-files/061623%20States%20Motion%20for%20Protective%20Order.pdf">motion</a> objecting to the prosecutor’s attempts to avoid turning over a detailed breakdown of how authorities used genetic genealogy to link the accused to the murders. Logsdon wrote in the motion that investigators found DNA from three other men in the off-campus residence where Ethan Chapin, 20; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Madison Mogen, 21, were murdered in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022. DNA from two men was found inside the house, while DNA from a third man was found outside the home on a glove, the filing says, according to <a href="https://www.insideedition.com/bryan-kohberger-defense-dna-suspects-glove-murder-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Inside Edition</a>.
None of the three samples match the suspect’s DNA, though it is unknown when this particular DNA was left at the home, which was the location of frequent parties.
The suspect and his attorney say these DNA samples were never run through the national DNA database to find a match.
Prosecutors have argued that they didn’t need to turn over detailed information about how genetic genealogy was used to link the suspect to the crimes since a DNA sample provided by the suspect directly matched DNA found on a knife sheath found at the crime scene. The genetic genealogy wouldn’t be used at trial, prosecutors argued.
Once police had their suspect, they tracked him to his parents’ house in Pennsylvania and collected garbage from the outside trash cans. They obtained DNA that partially matched the DNA collected from the knife sheath, indicating they had the DNA of the suspect&#8217;s father. Collecting DNA from the suspect later directly linked him to the sheath. The sheath was found on a bed next to Goncalves and Mogen’s bodies, partially under one of them. The type of knife the sheath held would have been consistent with the knife used to murder the four victims.
The suspect and his attorneys also attempted to poke holes in the state’s case, including the DNA from the other men.
&#8220;While this was ongoing, police were investigating many various possible suspects. Many of them provided DNA,&#8221; Logsdon wrote in the filing, referring to law enforcement&#8217;s focus on his client. &#8220;At least one had his DNA surreptitiously taken from discarded cigarette. Many also had their phones taken and downloaded.&#8221;

The filing also notes that no DNA from the victims was found in the suspect’s “apartment, office, home, or vehicle.&#8221;
As for the vehicle, the defense said the probable cause affidavit only referenced a “white sedan” without mentioning the make or model. Logsdon claimed there was only one sighting identified as a Hyundai Elantra.
&#8220;Precisely how the police came to believe the car was an Elantra is still unknown,&#8221; Logsdon wrote. &#8220;A report from an analyst for the FBI dated March 21, 2023 shows the analyst heavily relying on video of car heading in the wrong direction and at the wrong time on Ridge Rd.&#8221;
Police used surveillance footage to track a white sedan without a license plate on the front as it drove in front of the victim’s homes several times. They also tracked that vehicle’s movements back to Washington State University, where the suspect was pursuing a doctorate in criminology.

Prosecutors on Monday indicated their intention to seek the death penalty for the 28-year-old man accused of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/homicide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killing</a> four University of Idaho <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/students" target="_blank" rel="noopener">students</a> last November.
In <a href="https://coi.isc.idaho.gov/docs/case/CR29-22-2805/062623%20Notice%20Pursuant%20to%20Idaho%20Code%2018-4004A.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a motion</a> filed with the district court of Latah County, Idaho, prosecutors wrote that they had “not identified or been provided with any mitigating circumstances sufficient to prohibit the triers of fact from considering all penalties authorized by the Idaho legislature including the possibility of a capital sentence.”
Prosecutors continued, writing “considering all evidence currently known to the State, the State is compelled to file this notice of intent to seek the death penalty.”
The motion ended by saying prosecutors reserve the right to withdraw its intent should mitigating evidence prevent itself.
Earlier this month, the suspect, who is not being named per Daily Wire policy, filed a court motion stating that due to the “voluminous” and “still ongoing” discovery process, as well as the defense’s continued investigation of the charges against the suspect, deciding to offer an alibi for the crime would be “at a minimum, premature as wading through the extensive information that makes up the case is incomplete,” the court documents said, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/idaho-college-murder-suspect-bryan-kohberger-requests-time/story?id=99989758" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to ABC News</a>.
Further, deciding now “may tread into disclosures of protected information,” the motion added. Thus, the defense said it “needs time to make this determination and consider evidentiary rules.”
The Latah County Prosecutor’s Office previously filed a motion for the suspect’s notice of alibi on May 23. Idaho law gives defendants ten days to respond to such a motion, “or at such different time as the court may direct,” in writing. They must also provide a list of witnesses they would call on to confirm that alibi.
The suspect’s attorneys requested additional time to decide or an exception to the rule. Should the court not grant their request, defense attorneys wrote, then they asked for a hearing “to present oral argument, evidence and/or testimony.”
The suspect was formally indicted in May on charges including first-degree murder. During his arraignment, he wore a bullet-proof vest under his orange jumpsuit, the Daily Mail <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12111149/Bryan-Kohberger-court-appearance-LIVE-Idaho-murder-suspect-enter-plea-four-counts-murder.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
He reportedly stood silently when the judge asked him to enter his plea, so the judge entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf. Families of the victims reportedly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/attorney-says-university-of-idaho-victims-families-want-death-penalty-for-accused-killer-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asked</a> for the death penalty.
The suspect was arrested six weeks after four friends, Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Ethan Chapin, 20; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Madison Mogen, 21, were stabbed to death on November 13, 2022.

An <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/idaho" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Idaho</a> school board member suggested that if teachers are not permitted to discuss gender identity with students, children may not be able to learn math, reading, or writing.
On Monday, the Nampa School District just west of Boise <a href="https://www.idahopress.com/news/local/nampa-school-board-approves-controversial-gender-sexual-orientation-policy/article_0483472a-0f8f-11ee-b0be-9bf47356ff38.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted</a> to adopt a policy banning discussion of gender identity, sexual orientation, transgender identity, and gender expression in all grades.
School board trustee Mandy Simpson was the sole board member to vote against the policy in the three-to-one vote.
“My biggest problem, and the most sleep I’ve lost over this, is this idea that our teachers can’t survey our students,” Simpson <a href="https://www.idahopress.com/news/local/nampa-school-board-approves-controversial-gender-sexual-orientation-policy/article_0483472a-0f8f-11ee-b0be-9bf47356ff38.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> during the board meeting.
“I know from firsthand experience that if kids don’t feel safe in a classroom, they will not even begin to try to learn the reading, the writing, the math,” <a href="https://www.idahoednews.org/news/nampa-trustees-pass-policy-limiting-discussions-on-gender-identity-sexual-orientation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Simpson, who is a <a href="https://www.nsd131.org/apps/pages/BoardOfTrustees" target="_blank" rel="noopener">math teacher</a> in the neighboring Boise School District.
“It does silence people,” Simpson said of the policy. “We do need a policy that respects parent involvement and parents’ decision-making — I agree. I actually don’t think this does it.”
Simpson added that “religion should not come into play” in the school board&#8217;s decisions.
“It’s about the morals and health of the pupils, not my morals, not anyone else’s morals, but the morals of the pupils that are in our buildings,” Simpson said.

Other board members disagreed.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t want you to discuss my child’s sexuality unless I know you and I are on the same page. Sorry, I just don’t,&#8221; board chair Brook Taylor <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/idaho-school-district-votes-ban-classroom-discussions-gender-identity-sexuality" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
“When you ask a 5-year-old their pronouns, this has happened, you are challenging that family through their child, and that is the school district challenging that family’s core beliefs because these are core beliefs,&#8221; Taylor said. &#8220;I want to preserve our rights to have all of our individual beliefs, and to me this policy does that.”
Board member Marco Valle said, “if I was to say ‘what is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life’ when I die, I would say number one: I raised a good family and I tried to do good. Number two: I passed this policy.”
Valle <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/idaho-school-district-votes-ban-classroom-discussions-gender-identity-sexuality" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> the policy &#8220;so neutral,&#8221; and said it&#8217;s &#8220;not stopping the kids,&#8221; it&#8217;s &#8220;stopping the district.&#8221;
The new Nampa schools policy <a href="https://www.idahopress.com/news/local/nampa-school-board-approves-controversial-gender-sexual-orientation-policy/article_0483472a-0f8f-11ee-b0be-9bf47356ff38.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">states</a> that the school board recognizes the “rights of parents, guardians, and caregivers to discuss, address, and educate their child on every subject matter, especially the non-academic subject matters not addressed in the District.”
The policy also <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/idaho-school-district-votes-ban-classroom-discussions-gender-identity-sexuality" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prevents</a> staff from being forced to use a student&#8217;s new pronouns and <a href="https://www.idahoednews.org/news/nampa-trustees-pass-policy-limiting-discussions-on-gender-identity-sexual-orientation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">requires</a> students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their biological sex.
The policy came about because of a controversial high school psychology class that included discussions about gender identity and sexual orientation, according to a student. The class <a href="https://www.idahopress.com/news/local/psychology-class-sparks-debate-at-nampa-school-board-meeting/article_c225d1dc-de19-11ed-82b5-57d2e7d1879d.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sparked</a> debate at an April school board meeting, and the policy was first considered by the board <a href="https://www.idahopress.com/news/local/nampa-school-district-considers-policy-that-has-similarities-to-controversial-florida-bill/article_72836b4e-f8db-11ed-8217-ef3d8fb90664.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in May</a>.
In response to concerns about students who may not have a supportive family environment, Superintendent Gregg Russell said those students should be referred to a school counselor.
