Hundreds of thousands of Canadians could face prison time if they do not turn in their newly prohibited guns under a supposedly “voluntary” gun buyback program that is testing the strength of Canada&#8217;s bureaucratic regime.
Since May 2020, the Canadian government has attempted to institute a massive “assault-style firearms compensation program” that will purportedly trade cash for prohibited guns. If Canadians do not turn in a prohibited gun by October 2026, they could face up to five years in prison. The program has faced massive pushback from provincial leaders and gun rights organizations who say it will only disarm law-abiding Canadians.

“We&#8217;re finding that they&#8217;re running into a lot of compliance issues,” Blair Hagen, an executive at Canada’s National Firearms Association, told The Daily Wire. “They have no idea where [the guns are] or who has them. So it&#8217;s proving to be a very, very difficult situation for the government.”
Due to the scope of the program, the government has extended amnesty three times for ownership of one of the thousands of banned so-called “assault-style” guns, with the latest one set to expire in October 2026.

An <a href="https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2020/05/01/prime-minister-announces-ban-assault-style-firearms">order in council</a> rolled out by then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in May 2020 banned thousands of “assault weapons” and claimed to offer compensation to those who voluntarily turn in their weapons. According to Hagen, an order in council is a “non-democratic legal instrument” where the Canadian government can ban items like guns “without having to take legislation through parliament.”
Today, the government <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/public-safety-canada/campaigns/firearms-buyback.html">describes</a> participation in the gun buyback program as “voluntary” but that compliance with the gun ban is required.
“While participating in the program is voluntary, compliance with the law is not. Businesses and individual firearm owners must safely dispose of or permanently deactivate their assault-style firearms before the amnesty period ends on October 30, 2026, or risk criminal liability for the illegal possession of a prohibited firearm,” the government says on its website.
Justin Davis, the public affairs director of the National Rifle Association, said that it made no sense to call the program voluntary.
“I mean, they call these things voluntary, but if the option is either turn them in or you&#8217;re going to jail, I would not consider that voluntary,” he told The Daily Wire. 
The government also doesn’t guarantee compensation for turning in the designated weapons, only saying that gun owners “who choose to participate in the program may receive compensation subject to availability of program funds.”
<h3>Carney Calls It Compensation, Not Confiscation</h3>

Prime Minister Mark Carney <a href="https://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/forcing-people-to-hand-over-their-guns-isnt-a-voluntary-program">claims</a> that the program, which could penalize gun owners with jail time if they don’t comply, was not “confiscation.”
“This is not about confiscation. This is about voluntary return of firearms for compensation,” Carney said during a podcast in September 2025. “People aren’t going around confiscating guns. Anyone who says that, that is a mischaracterization, what it is is an opportunity for Canadians to return guns for compensation.”
In the same podcast, Carney claimed that the hunting rifles would not be impacted by the extensive gun ban.
“We are not talking about hunting rifles. We’re not talking sports shooting or anything like that. We’re talking about assault rifles,” Carney said.
However, this appears to ignore the fact that there is a specific carve-out for Native tribes that use prohibited rifles for hunting. The amnesty <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/public-safety-canada/news/2024/12/government-of-canada-extends-list-of-prohibited-assault-style-firearms-and-moves-forward-on-regulatory-changes-to-strengthen-gun-control.html">includes</a> “a temporary exception for Indigenous peoples’ exercising a right” under the Constitution and “as well as those who use firearms for sustenance hunting, which enables them to continue to use their newly prohibited firearms to hunt (if previously non-restricted) until a suitable replacement can be found.”
<h3>Not In Alberta</h3>

Many Canadian provinces, including Yukon, Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, have indicated they will not assist the national government in enforcing the ban.
“We will have nothing to do with this program. We will not spend any Alberta taxpayer dollars on this program,&#8221; Teri Bryant, the chief firearms officer of Alberta, <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-gun-buyback-program-9.7053027">told</a> CBC News last month. &#8220;We can&#8217;t block the federal government from setting something up, but they have to set it up and be appropriately licensed.&#8221;
Effectively, what this means is that the feds will be on their own for enforcing the gun ban throughout much of Canada without any assistance from local law enforcement.
“If the feds want to try and enforce it, they are going to have to do it themselves, and of course, the logistics get even more insurmountable and the price goes up,” Hagen said.
In the fall of 2025, the Canadian government ran a <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/public-safety-canada/campaigns/firearms-buyback/pilot-lessons-learned.html">pilot program</a> of the buyback scheme that ran for six weeks and only yielded 25 guns. The government had <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/manitoba-federal-gun-buyback-assault-weapons-program-9.7047872">reportedly</a> expected to confiscate some 200 weapons.
The government declared the program a success, saying that it showed that “factual, consistent information on how the program works, what individuals can expect if they choose to participate, and legal requirements to comply with the prohibition must be readily available and up-to-date.”
Hagen said that there was not much public appetite for the gun buyback program, but that it was pushed by leftists embedded in Canada’s federal bureaucracy. 
“That&#8217;s one of the biggest problems with firearms laws in Canada,” he said. “There is a civil disarmament agenda in that bureaucracy. It started many years ago. They&#8217;ve done everything they can to ensure that it continues.”
At the end of the day, Hagen sees the government&#8217;s efforts to stop crime and violence by taking law-abiding citizens&#8217; firearms as illogical.
“You can put all the laws and restrictions and prohibitions on the lawful acquisition and ownership of firearms that you want, but it&#8217;s not going to decrease or eliminate crime or tragedies because criminals and lunatics will always find a way,” he said.
<h3>American Leftists Want The Same Policy</h3>
That sentiment was echoed by Davis with the NRA, who warned that leftist politicians in the United States wanted to enact similar policies.
“The issue here is the idea that criminals would be turning in their firearms is just absolutely illogical,” he told The Daily Wire. “There&#8217;s no criminal in the world who&#8217;s going to turn in their firearm for a few dollars when instead they can use it for perpetuating crime.”
During her first run for president back in 2019, Kamala Harris <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/live-blog/gun-safety-forum-live-updates-las-vegas-n1060911#ncrd1061751">said</a> she supported a “mandatory” gun buyback program for so-called “assault weapons.”
“We have to have a buyback program, and I support a mandatory gun buyback program,” Harris said. “It’s got to be smart, we got to do it the right way.”

Davis said that the Second Amendment gave a layer of protection to gun owners that those in Europe and Canada didn’t have.
“Places like Europe and Canada and Australia do not have those type of protections, and you see political figures continue to push more and more gun control laws that, again, just disarm law abiding citizens and create more soft targets for criminals, and evil individuals in this world who want to do harm to innocent lives,” he said.
A 2024 challenge to Canada&#8217;s buyback program lost, but advocates for gun rights in Canada believe that the program will become too expensive to institute and will face a host of practical problems.
Hagen sees some parallels between the current ban on “assault-style” weapons and the effort to have all long guns registered. That requirement was repealed in 2012 by a Conservative coalition and was seen as a major victory for Canadian gun rights advocates. The policies could also be overturned if Carney&#8217;s Liberal Party loses power in Canada.
“It&#8217;s one thing to ban a bunch of guns and declare that they&#8217;re prohibited and state your intention to confiscate them,&#8221; Hagen said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s quite another to actually make that happen.”

The elevated stand, which would typically be used for hunting, was discovered on Thursday according to a <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/fbi-investigates-hunting-stand-sight-line-trumps-air-force-one-exit-area-palm-beach-airport">report</a> published by Fox News Digital — and appeared to have been there for some time. It has not yet been linked to any potential suspects.
According to USSS chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi, there was no one in the vicinity when the stand was discovered during preparations for Trump&#8217;s arrival at Palm Beach International Airport.

Walz, who is vying for the vice presidency alongside current Vice President Kamala Harris, brought along staffers and reporters as part of an eleventh-hour media blitz geared primarily toward shoring up support among men for the Democratic Party&#8217;s 2024 ticket.
The Trump War Room shared video from MSNBC&#8217;s coverage of Walz&#8217;s outing, pointing out that even the reporter saw it for the political play that it was. &#8220;MSNBC implies that Tim Walz going pheasant hunting is nothing more than a desperate attempt to make up ground with male voters. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/country-music">Country music</a> stars <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/morgan-wallen">Morgan Wallen</a> and Eric Church have purchased the rights to the Field &amp; Stream brand and magazine, per an announcement made on Thursday, USA Today <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2024/01/25/morgan-wallen-eric-church-field-and-stream-revitalization/72351389007/">reported</a>.
The magazine was founded in 1871 and has been online-only since 2020. Wallen and Church have plans on reviving the paper version of Field &amp; Stream, plus will be hosting an outdoor music festival featuring the brand in the fall.
Church said in a press release that the magazine was an important part of his childhood, which makes this acquisition extra special.
“I can remember my grandfather kept a few of his favorite Field &amp; Stream magazines on the dash of his truck,” he said in an announcement posted on X.

Doug McNamee, former president of Chip and Joanna Gaines’ lifestyle brand, Magnolia, will be heading up the effort to refresh Field &amp; Stream. “We are committed to reinforcing Field and Stream’s legendary status as the authoritative voice of the American outdoors,” McNamee said in a statement, per USA Today.

A new campaign ad from Democratic Montana Senator Jon Tester celebrates the fact that he helped block the Biden administration’s push to pull funding from school hunting programs. It fails to mention the fact that he voted for the law that put the programs in jeopardy in the first place. 
Tester’s new 2024 <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6v0IrPrSiI" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ad</a> features a hunter education teacher praising the senator for opposing President Joe Biden’s Department of Education <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-admin-cuts-funding-for-school-hunting-archery-training-programs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">move last summer</a> to block funding for school hunting and archery programs. The move was enabled by the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a measure that Tester supported.
“When I heard the Biden administration was trying to block funding for gun safety and hunter education classes, I knew Jon Tester would do what he always does: give ‘em hell. Jon got his Republican colleagues onboard to stop Biden’s policies and defend our Second Amendment,” the teacher says. 
The BSCA, <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1172/vote_117_2_00242.htm#position" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted</a> for by Tester, passed 65-33 in June 2022 with opposition all coming from Republicans. The law included an amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) that bans taxpayer funds from being used on “training in the use of a dangerous weapon.” 
After the Education Department started blocking funding for the programs, GOP Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina wrote to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to dispute his interpretation of the amendment, saying that he was going against congressional intent. 
Congress later <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/5110/actions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> the Protecting Hunting Heritage and Education Act, which ensured that hunting and fishing classes could not lose their funding that Biden signed in October. The Senate approved the legislation unanimously while the House passed it 424-1. Tester took credit for the legislation despite his role in supporting the initial law that triggered the controversy.

“Tester voted for Biden’s plan to deny Montana schools funding for hunter safety programs, but now that he’s up for re-election, he’s trying to profit on the crisis he helped create and is now actually taking a victory lap that he resolved the very crisis he allowed to happen under his watch,” a press release from 2024 Montana Republican Senate candidate Tim Sheehy said. 
Tester, who was first elected in 2007, is seen as one of the vulnerable Democratic Senate seats in 2024. The Democrat has attempted to distance himself from Biden, who lost Montana by 16 points in 2020.

When I moved to Tennessee, my cat died. I didn’t talk about it publicly because no one cares when your cat dies. But my cat’s death was traumatizing to me. 
I adopted her when I was living alone in New York City. I got caught in a festival while trying to cross the street. At the end of it was a truck with animals who were going to die if they were not adopted. My soon-to-be-adopted cat had her head down, as though she had accepted defeat and was going to die. So, I decided I need that little ball of drama in my life. She was so sweet, practically human, and also so scared. She was afraid of every single sound in the city, and she would run under the bed and hide all the time. And she remained a true scaredy cat when we moved to Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. But when we moved to Tennessee, something changed. Maybe the air was different, but she started just bolting outside. Every day she would go a little farther in the backyard. She had been terrified of everything and all of a sudden she was trying to get outside. One night, she ran out and did not come back; two coyotes killed her on our front porch. It was devastating. She didn’t know the outside. Four years old but she had never lived outside. She didn’t even know what a coyote was.
Over the past few years, I have felt more and more like we aren’t even human anymore; we are more like droids and robots, walking around and not even knowing our surroundings. Around the time we came to Tennessee, I started really leaning into my humanity, wanting to know how to survive. I began growing my own food, raising chickens, and hunting — but it  took me a while to come around to hunting. I had grown up thinking it was horrific, and I was against it on a spiritual level. But the reality was, I knew nothing about hunting at all. In fact, most people who think hunting is terrible don’t know the truth, which is that hunters are, in fact, the number one animal conservationists on the planet — not vegans.
The reason hunters buy into a hunt is because they are either saving an animal or they are saving humans. In Africa, for example, lions often become overpopulated in various regions. When that happens, they begin attacking and killing entire villages of Africans — and they do it in as little as minutes. Hunters can then buy into a hunt because the region needs the population of lions to go down. Otherwise, Africans continue to get slaughtered. Hunters will pay a million dollars to hunt one lion, and that money goes directly to save other animals. There are serious restrictions around hunting: what animals can be hunted, the cost to pay for the hunt, certain types must be bulls, species numbers cannot be low, and so on. You could never kill a black rhino, for example, because there are few in the world.
These hunters know about the wilderness. They actually care about the animals and are often trying to preserve other animals. Poachers, however, are a different story. There is a gaping difference between poachers and hunters. When hunting is banned, it becomes open season for poachers. Poachers will land a helicopter in the middle of a field in the dead of night, take a rhino’s horns, and leave it to bleed to a slow death. Poachers love hunting bans because bans mean no hunters. Poachers are scared of hunters because a hunter will shoot a poacher — but if hunters can’t hunt, poachers have free reign.

All this new-to-me information, coupled with my desire to learn to survive in the wilderness, made me want to learn how to hunt my own food. So when I went to South Africa earlier this year, I decided it was time. Plus, what better place to hunt than a place where the meat is turned into food for the villagers? (That is what happens with every hunter: Every piece of animal meat is used for the Africans’ survival.) The morning we left on our hunting excursion, I felt different; I knew this was going to be successful, and I knew that I could do it. I felt good about my practice shots at the shooting range in the Kalahari Desert, and I decided I wanted to shoot gemsbok. A tracker is present on the hunt, of course, and they can see animals no one else can. They know the land, the animals, the expectations. They also warn you of the dangers because it’s Africa, not an American zoo where animals are imprisoned for viewing pleasure. These animals are in the wild and they are wild. They told us critical information, like why to stay away from a rhino and its calf. While white rhinos are safe, they will still charge if they think their young is threatened. Any of these animals will attack if that’s the case.

When we made it to our location, our tracker pointed out the gemsbok. Though he could see them, I could not until we had run quite some distance and were probably within 500 meters of them. The tracker told us the wind was not good — right as I was thinking how great it felt. We were in the desert, it was hot, and the wind felt like a small sprinkling of relief from the heat. But the wind was not “good” because the gemsbok caught our scent — and vanished. I realized quickly that everything becomes a predator; the elements are a predator. The wind drives the animals off, the terrain is rugged, and the blazing sun is an hourglass ticking away time. The obscure bushes cover the land as they protect the animals and clawed at us as we passed. The sand is a deep red, deceivingly beautiful as it is unbelievably difficult to trek through. But even with the battle against the elements, I was acutely aware that this was a special moment, and I did not want to forget it. I wanted to pause and create memories in my head. While the elements don’t work in your favor, the landscape is breathtakingly beautiful.

When the tracker spotted another gemsbok, we started to run which quickly became a sprint as we tried to keep up with him. My husband was in front of me, holding the rifle, and I was giving it my all. I kept thinking about how I wake up every morning and run on the treadmill — and in this situation, it was utterly meaningless. Nothing can compare to running across this terrain. It seemed that everything I was wearing was wrong, including my shoes, and when my husband would look back, I would whisper as we continued running, “Go, go ahead. I’m fine.” I wasn’t fine. But, I felt so alive. I had a burning in my chest. And while the treadmill didn’t touch this exercise, I still knew this was the point of why I train — because these are the things that actually matter. This is the reason God designed us with this body and with this ability to run: to run after prey and to run from predators.
In the middle of these thoughts and in the middle of my sprinting, my heart felt like it stopped: I suddenly realized we were completely surrounded by rhinos. They were only about ten feet away from me, and I froze in my tracks. Questions raced through my mind: Does the rhino have a calf? Does she think I’m crossing her? Where is the baby? Is there a baby? I started scream whispering to my husband, trying to get his attention by jumping, all while feeling as though my feet were cement. I was terrified. The tracker assuaged my fears, telling me the rhinos have bad vision and they did not have any calves with them. We kept running.
I was overcome wishing I could live this day over and over. Everything matters in these moments. It’s either hunt or be hunted. My senses were heightened, my adrenaline was pumping, and I felt alive. It was as if nothing else mattered outside that moment, outside of that hunt. I thought back to my cat and realized this must be how she felt. When we came to Tennessee, she finally became a cat. As I was running through the Kalahari Desert in Africa, I finally felt human.

We ran for an hour and a half, stopping, pausing briefly — but the journey felt like it was only 10 minutes. Finally, I looked up, and I saw her in the distance. And I just knew. I knew I was going to get that gemsbok. The shot was 250 meters away, and the tracker helped me set up, told me to take a deep breath, and instructed me to be calm. But I wasn’t nervous at all. I felt incredibly calm and so sure of myself in that moment. I took a deep breath, fired, and shot the animal directly. When we ran to her, we discovered she was a queen; she would go in a record book because she had horns.
I am smiling in the photos I took with her. I used to wonder how people could smile next to an animal that’s dead, that they’ve killed. But I want to make it clear: I was not gloating that I killed an animal. I smiled because of the beauty in it. This experience gave me a tremendous respect for life — and for death. I reached another level of my own development. In these photos, I don’t see a person who just wants to believe food comes from a grocery store; I see a person who can now hunt her own food. And that’s what this animal did: The meat in these pictures went on to feed African children in nearby villages, children who are ecstatic when hunters come because they know they will eat.
I don’t want to be a conservative coward who will not post nor talk about hunting for fear that people will not understand. I’m proud. I am tremendously proud of this moment. And I know in the future, all my children will learn to shoot, hunt, and live off the land. When things get bad — and they will because good and bad times are cyclical — I want to know how to survive. We live in times of prosperity, but we have also seen grocery stores with shelves cleared. The vegans won’t be the ones to survive if times get tough. It’s the hunters who will be able to survive.

Former Denver Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe, who claimed he killed a predatory mountain lion using a bow and arrow, has been harshly criticized for posing with the carcass.
Wolfe claimed on Instagram on Thursday that he fell from a 10-foot rockface as he descended from the mountain with the carcass. He said he got a call from someone asking if he wanted to stalk a mountain lion that had been “wreaking havoc in a rural neighborhood.”
“He had already killed two of her dogs and was living under her porch, nervous [about] what he might do next,” Wolfe, who is 6’5”, wrote. “We found a fresh 4&#215;4 mule deer he had just killed. We hiked straight up 2500 ft and down the other side, then back up again, back down the other side and then back up again to 9600 ft.”

Wolfe played for the Denver Broncos between 2012-2019, then signed with the Baltimore Ravens. In 2022, he signed a one-day contract with the Broncos so he could retire in Denver.
“I&#8217;m happy to be done with the game because (the injuries) were piling up and I know my wife is very happy not to have to watch me crawl into the shower every morning,” he <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/nfl/article/derek-wolfe-signs-one-day-deal-to-retire-as-a-denver-bronco/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>. “It was just getting bad, so it was time to call it &#8230; I get to be a father; I get to be a husband. Wherever you live, are you self-sufficient enough that you know how to grow and hunt for your own food? Have you ever thought about learning those skills for a New Year&#8217;s resolution?
I just spent the past two weeks in Africa on an amazing trip where <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/ep-68-why-i-m-not-afraid-to-talk-about-hunting-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">I did some hunting for the first time in the Kalahari Desert</a>. It was a catalyzing trip that made me determined to learn those basic survival skills — for my personal and spiritual growth. It is essential that as conservatives we know how to be truly independent.
<h2>What My Cat Taught Me About Nature And Humanity</h2>
I actually first started thinking about this concept when my husband and I moved our family to Tennessee. I had a cat then who was used to living in New York City and other areas of the Northeast. Prior to moving south, she was an indoor cat.
Yet, when we moved to Tennessee, she changed. She wanted to go outside. Perhaps it was seeing the rolling hills and fresh air, but her personality changed. She used to be terrified of everything, but then she became fearless. She&#8217;d explore more and more each day, so much so it was a headache keeping track of her.
One night, she was killed on the back porch. It was irresponsible of us, but we accidentally forgot to check to make sure she was inside before locking. A coyote killed her that night and it was truly devastating.
Yet, before she died, perhaps she was truly happy because she was reawakening her true nature, she was leaning into being an animal by being outside. She was just learning the real world. 
<h2>Why Hunting And Self-Survival Is Essential</h2>
We can learn a lesson from this: We need to lean more into our humanity by moving away from the screens, fast food, and dependency on the government so that we can learn how to survive.
In recent years, I have become obsessed with gardening so that I can know how to grow my own food. Next, I wanted chickens.
Recently, I started to think I wanted to learn how to hunt. Until recently, I had never been a fan of the sport. It was almost foreign to me how anybody could kill a defenseless animal. I thought &#8220;trophy hunting&#8221; was horrific.
In hindsight, I  knew absolutely nothing about it at all.
It wasn&#8217;t until a conversation with the wonderful Donald Trump Jr. that I began to see it in a different light. He explained to me why the number one animal conservationists in the world are hunters.
As Trump Jr. explained it, big hunts, especially in countries in Africa, are often done to either protect villages from being eaten by wild animals to protect endangered animals from being killed by overpopulated predators and to help guard against poachers. An entire industry is born out of those needs and in turn, provides jobs for locals in these areas.
Those who lead the hunt are often paid handsome money to kill the beast and it serves a necessary purpose — these hunts aren&#8217;t done for the gruesome cruelty of just killing an animal.  The meat from these hunts is used in turn to feed villagers previously terrified.
<h2>My First Gemsbok Kill</h2>
Since that conversation, I wanted to go on one of these hunts and I finally did.

Led by a tracker, my husband and I went on an exhilarating hunt where I learned more about survival than I ever could have dreamed.
On the hunt for Gemsbok, I learned how in the wild — every single element around you is a predator.
Wind can be a predator — it picks up your scent and notifies an animal targeting you, or a creature you are trying to kill, that you&#8217;re nearby, thus either putting you in danger of either losing the kill or being killed.
The sun is your enemy — you have to complete your mission before it goes down and nightfall comes. Your terrain can hold you back — where I was literally. The bush was so thick, with so many thorns, that if you weren&#8217;t careful you would get caught in it. Other animals trying to survive themselves can view you as a threat — and try to kill you.
That day on the hunt, I remember feeling so alive despite gasping for breath. For an hour and a half, my husband, the tracker, and I sprinted and stopped. I laughed thinking about my morning treadmills which prepared me so little for this.
Yet, I also thought of that cat. This must have been what she felt like experiencing nature for the first time. God didn&#8217;t make our bodies for treadmills, he gave us the ability to run so that we can provide food for our families and escape danger when needed.
Finally, after darting and diving for ninety minutes, I saw her in the distance. I just knew that I was going to get that Gemsbok. I saw her horns first, actually, and she was about 250 meters away. The tracker and my husband stopped and they set up the rifle on the rifle stand. The tracker asked me to look through the scope, and I confirmed that I could see her.
And he whispered, &#8220;You just want to calm down. You know this is the part where people lose it. It&#8217;s a very long shot. Just take a deep breath. Don&#8217;t be nervous, it&#8217;s going to be fine.&#8221;
At that moment, I wasn&#8217;t nervous. I felt so calm and sure of myself.
I took a breath, fired the gun, and killed the animal directly in the heart. In the photo taken right after, I am standing there next to the deceased Gemsbok, smiling.
<h2>A Spiritual And Personal Moment Of Growth</h2>
Prior to this day, I always remember seeing similar photos and wondering how individuals could gloat over the killing of a living creature.
But, that day I realized that it wasn&#8217;t about holding up a &#8220;trophy&#8221; at all. The entire experience provided me with tremendous respect for life and for death.
I was smiling because I realized that I had reached another level in my own development. That Gemsbok was going to be used to help feed those in need. It was the first time I provided food for another human by killing it myself. It was a spiritual moment — God wants us to have dominion over nature while being stewards of the earth.
So I realize that this has been my New Year&#8217;s resolution for several years now. I want to become truly &#8220;native&#8221; —  to know how to survive where I live, while battling physical, animal, and other natural elements.
When things get bad, you are going to have to know how to survive. Food in grocery stores won&#8217;t always be there. Your government won&#8217;t always be able to provide for you.
The best way to protect yourself is to practice true self-governance — and learn the skills needed to cultivate fruits and vegetables that can grow in your habitat while knowing how to hunt should you ever truly need to depend on it.

Democratic Governor of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/new-jersey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New Jersey</a> Phil Murphy is <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/15/nyregion/bear-hunt-new-jersey.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reversing</a> his position against bear hunting much to the discontent of animal rights activists. 
When Murphy was running for governor in 2017, he was against the bear hunt in the state and vowed to get rid of it. He did so, but this year, he is bringing it back due to the increasing bear population in the state and the rising number of dangerous encounters with the animals. 
Murphy signed an executive order in 2018 that ended hunting bears on government land. The governor <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/new-jersey-moves-to-curb-bear-hunting-1534806669?mod=article_inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a> at the time that in order to entirely ban the practice, the New Jersey Fish and Game Council would need to do so. Earlier this month, Murphy said he was planning to get rid of the 2018 order because of increased safety concerns. 
The New Jersey Fish and Game Council <a href="https://newjerseymonitor.com/2022/11/16/n-j-bear-hunt-likely-returning-despite-pleas-from-animal-activists/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">held</a> a unanimous vote in favor of bringing back the hunt after Murphy said he had to reinstate it. After they did so, Murphy <a href="https://www.nj.gov/governor/news/news/562022/20221115a.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">agreed</a> and got rid of his 2018 order. The council also examined and approved alterations to the Game Code regarding the bear season in New Jersey. 
“The facts on the ground have shown that we cannot rely on nonlethal methods alone to protect New Jersey residents from a growing black bear population,” Governor Murphy said earlier this month. “Today’s actions will facilitate the reinstatement of a regulated black bear hunt this year to help limit dangerous interactions between people and bears to protect public safety.”
The state’s Department of Environmental Protection <a href="https://dep.nj.gov/njfw/bears/bear-hunting-season-information/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outlined</a> the public safety issues regarding bears in the state. The department noted that the DEP received a “237% increase in bear damage and nuisance reports” from the beginning of this year up to October 21, when compared to the same time span the year before.
The department <a href="https://dep.nj.gov/wp-content/uploads/njfw/activity_ytd_october22.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that there have been 84 property damage incidents reported to the agency, 129 vehicle strikes, 62 aggressive encounters, 15 attempted home entries, and 433 sightings.
The population of bears has gone up to over 3,000 in the state. Regular hunts used to keep the number closer to 1,500, Ed Markowski, a former worker at the state’s Division of Fish and Wildlife, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/new-jerseys-bear-hunt-is-restored-reigniting-debate-on-curbing-population-11668922408" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Wall Street Journal.
Jeff Tittel, former director of the New Jersey Sierra Club, claimed that Murphy’s new stance has to do with his political future. 
“It’s one thing to be for gun control,” Tittel <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/15/nyregion/bear-hunt-new-jersey.html#:~:text=Months%20after%20taking%20office%20in,in%20the%20fall%20of%202020." target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, “but another thing to be against hunting. That would hurt him in states like New Hampshire, Iowa, Michigan and Pennsylvania.”
Activists and groups are <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/new-jerseys-bear-hunt-is-restored-reigniting-debate-on-curbing-population-11668922408">issuing</a> threats of legal action to stop the hunt. 
The hunt will take place from December 5 to December 10. It will end if 30% of the bear population of 2022 is brought in, but if 20% of the bears are not harvested during the hunt, an additional window of time will be allowed.

The president of the board of directors of the Mexican Hunting Federation was killed by a buffalo after he shot at one while on a hunting trip in Argentina.
After his shot, the buffalo charged and gored Mario Alberto Canales Najjar, 64, an expert hunter of big game, causing his death.
“Canales Najjar, 64, was armed with a .408-caliber rifle and had managed to get within 30 meters of the animal when he took aim,” <a href="https://english.elpais.com/international/2022-10-12/head-of-mexican-hunting-federation-killed-by-charging-buffalo-in-argentina.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">El Pais</a> reported.

Najjar and three friends were hunting together in the province of Entre Rios at the time of the incident on October 7. The buffalo gored Najjar in the torso, causing rib and sternal fractures as well as retroperitoneal hematomas. The area had no cell phone reception and ambulances could not reach it, so he was transported to a hospital by a pickup truck.
After Najjar was gored, the group’s hunting guide fired five shots, killing the buffalo, <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11312285/Horrifying-moment-president-Mexicos-Hunting-Federation-killed-buffalo-Argentina.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Mail</a> noted.
Najjar, who went into shock after the goring, was pronounced dead on arrival. His wife and two children came to Argentina to say goodbye; he was cremated so his ashes could be transported back to Mexico.
“Huge sadness for the departure of a great man and [a] much better friend,” the Mexican Hunting Federation stated. “A conservationist and tireless fighter for hunters&#8217; rights, his generous friendship leaves an indelible mark on us.&#8221;
Famed Canadian hunter Jim Shockey <a href="https://www.marca.com/en/more-sports/2022/10/13/634738b046163ff37c8b456d.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reacted</a>, &#8220;My deepest condolences to the family of Mario Canales, who was killed two days ago by a buffalo in Argentina. &#8230; I and all of us who knew this man of conservation, this man of honor, president of the Mexican Hunting Federation, mourn with his family. &#8230; They say that hunters never die&#8230; They just go deeper into the forest.&#8221;
Another friend of Najjar’s <a href="https://www.infobae.com/sociedad/2022/10/11/un-experto-cazador-mexicano-fue-embestido-por-un-bufalo-y-murio-en-entre-rios/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lauded</a> his “effort and energy to face adversity before authorities and always seek protection, understanding and legal aspects of the hunt.&#8221;
“The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Entre Ríos has opened an investigation into the incident and to analyze the permits held by the Punta Caballos-based company that organized the trip, specifically to check if they had the required documentation to hunt buffalo,” El Pais noted.
Najjar was vice-president of the group United for Sustainable Management of Our Biodiversity and president of the board of directors of the Safari Club of Mexico. He also served as a member of the board of the National Wildlife Council.
