Karmelo Anthony, who&#8217;s been charged with murdering Austin Metcalf, 17, had his bond drastically reduced and was granted house arrest, per a judge&#8217;s ruling on Monday.
Earlier this month, Metcalf <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/high-school-football-star-stabbed-to-death-at-track-meet-dies-in-twin-brothers-arms?row=0&amp;elementPosition=5&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;author=Hank+Berrien&amp;title=High+School+Football+Star+Stabbed+To+Death+At+Track+Meet%2C+Dies+In+Twin+Brother%E2%80%99s+Arms&amp;category=News" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was stabbed to death</a> at a high school track meet in Texas after reportedly telling Anthony, 17, that he was sitting in the wrong seat. Anthony has been charged with murder and, <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/04/04/us-news/austin-metcalfs-twin-says-we-were-one-person-in-heartbreaking-new-interview/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to an arrest warrant, told police of the fatal stabbing, “I did it.”
Initially, Anthony&#8217;s bond was set at $1 million, but a Collin County judge agreed to lower the bond to $250,000. The teen will be required to wear an ankle monitor and stay inside his parents&#8217; home if the family can post bond, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/news/karmelo-anthony-frisco-stabbing-austin-metcalf-bond-reduced-house-arrest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a>.
Anthony has been in the Collin County jail since April 2, the day of the fatal stabbing.
During the hearing, prosecutors asked Anthony&#8217;s father about an alleged separate &#8220;assault&#8221; involving the accused, which dates only a couple of months back, on February 4. Notably, the judge lowered the bond, citing Anthony&#8217;s lack of criminal history.
The prosecution also asked why the suspect&#8217;s family is not using the money donated to an online fundraiser for their child, which is nearing half a million dollars. The fundraiser says it was established by &#8220;The Anthony Family.&#8221; Defense attorneys argued that the fundraiser &#8220;is not a bond fund&#8221; but intended to help Anthony&#8217;s family while his father &#8221; is currently on leave from work,&#8221; according to CBS News.
&#8220;The narrative being spread is false, unjust, and harmful,&#8221; the fundraiser reads. &#8220;As a family of faith, we are deeply grateful for all of your support during this trying period. Your prayers and assistance mean more to us now more than ever.&#8221;
Alternatively, a fundraiser for the victim&#8217;s family is hovering at just over $340,000.
&#8220;I am Jeff Metcalf. My son, Austin Metcalf, was tragically stabbed today at a school track meet. They were not able to save him,&#8221; the fundraiser says. &#8220;He was a bright young man with a great future ahead of him. He was a leader of men. His smile would light up the room. His passion for football was unbelievable. Voted team MVP this past season and carried a 4.0 GPA. He was looking forward to taking his game to the next level. His commitment, dedication, leadership, and sheer grit made him rise to the level of success that he desired.&#8221;
&#8220;His twin brother, Hunter, played beside him,&#8221; it continues. &#8220;We will all remember him for the way he impacted others&#8217; lives. I love you forever, son. It&#8217;s not goodbye, it&#8217;s see you later. God will take care of us till we meet again. RIP. Love, Dad.&#8221;

He did not know the alleged assailant when the incident occurred at Kuykendall Stadium at roughly 10 a.m.
“They were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother&#8217;s arms,” Jeff Metcalf said. “I rushed up there and I saw him on the gurney and I could tell &#8212; they said he wasn&#8217;t breathing. I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was, and I was very concerned, so I had to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospital. And we prayed, and it&#8217;s God&#8217;s plan. I don&#8217;t understand it, but they weren&#8217;t able to save him. This is murder.”
“I tried to whip around as fast as I could,” Hunter Metcalf <a href="https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/frisco-texas-isd-track-meet-suspended-emergency-incident-schoo-district-kuykendall-stadium/287-6380955c-e03d-4aeb-837f-a0fc31a46c40" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “I looked at my brother and I’m not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him.”
“He was on the right track,” Jeff Metcalf said of Austin. “He was loved by many. He was a leader.”
“I&#8217;m not trying to judge, but what kind of parents did this child have?” Jeff Metcalf asked. “What was he taught? He brought a knife to a track meet and he murdered my son by stabbing him in the heart. The guy was in the wrong place and they asked him to move and he bowed up. This is murder. You know what, I already forgive this person. Already. God takes care of things. God is going to take care of me. God is going to take care of my family.”

Three years ago, during a high school girls’ volleyball match, the future I had envisioned for myself completely fell apart.
I <a href="https://www.iwfeatures.com/documentary/payton-mcnabb/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suffered a severe head and neck injury</a> after a trans-identifying male athlete on the opposing girls’ team sent a volleyball flying directly at my face. I was left partially paralyzed on the right side of my body. The full extent of my injuries forced me to confront the reality that the collegiate athletic career I had been pursuing was no longer possible, and that even basic tasks, such as driving and taking exams, would be significantly more difficult.
At first, I felt hopeless. But then I realized I could use my tragedy — the permanent consequences I must now live with as a result of an unfair policy forcing girls like me to compete against biological males—for good.
And that’s exactly what has happened.
It was an immense honor to attend President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress on March 4 as a guest of the president and first lady. All I could think about as I listened to the president share my story is how far I’ve come — and how different things could have been.
I never wanted to be a policy advocate or public figure in the fight against gender ideology. All I wanted was to compete and play softball in college. But as President Trump reminded Americans during his address, gender ideology and the officials who enforce it stole that dream from me. And they have no regrets about doing so.
In fact, as I stood to be recognized by President Trump, not a single Democrat on the left side of the aisle applauded or stood in recognition of the hardship I have experienced. I don’t recall even one Democrat so much as looking in my direction. It was hard not to take this as a personal insult. After all, the policies they support — policies that strip women of their right to sex-based spaces and sports teams — cost me personally.
But the Democrats’ stubborn refusal to recognize the consequences of their policies doesn’t just affect me. Senate Democrats in particular made that quite clear this month when they refused to vote in favor of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, a bill that would bar male athletes from competing against — and potentially injuring — young women.
These Democrats know they are out of step with the American public on this issue—and they just don’t care. For example, when Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-NH, was asked earlier this month why she voted against the bill when <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/sports/nyt-poll-finds-majority-democrats-oppose-trans-athletes-womens-sports" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the vast majority</a> of her state’s residents support it, she <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/gops-two-top-dem-senate-targets-justify-blocking-bill-bar-men-from-womens-sports" target="_blank" rel="noopener">insisted</a> the legislation wasn’t important because “it only applies to one person.”
To be clear, even a very conservative estimate <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/lgbtq/5046662-ncaa-president-transgender-athletes-college-sports/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">places</a> the total number of trans-identifying male athletes competing in women’s sports at far more than just “one person.” But even if Shaheen were right, I am living proof of what can happen when just “one person” is forced to give up her sex-based right to fair and safe competition. Does my experience not matter to Democrats like Shaheen? Do my rights not count?
The fact is, it doesn’t matter how many trans-identifying athletes there are. The correct number of women who should be forced to compete against them is zero. And if congressional Democrats refuse to take our safety seriously, then state legislatures must pick up the slack for them.
After my injury, I was proud to help pass a bill in my home state of North Carolina, House Bill 574, that bans trans-identifying male athletes from playing in women’s sports at both the K-12 and collegiate levels, and I remain committed to helping other states follow suit. There are still 24 states that refuse to act on this issue. That must change.
Those states should keep in mind that the American public, the Trump administration, and, most importantly, common sense, are all on the same side: the side that values and protects women like me. They can either join the fight or stay seated like the Democrats in Congress this month. For their own sake, I hope they choose the former.

Defying President Donald Trump’s executive order that aims to prohibit men and boys from participating in female sports, an Oregon high school allowed an 11th-grade boy who identifies as a girl to compete in a Portland Interscholastic League track meet, where he thoroughly dominated the girls in the competition.
Last year, Ada (who formerly went by Aayden) Gallagher of Portland’s McDaniel High School won the 200M and 400M races at the 6A-1 Portland Interscholastic League Championship. On Wednesday, he won the 400m race again, timing at 57.62, a full seven seconds faster than Franklin High School&#8217;s Kinnaly Souphanthong, who ran the race in 1:05.72. Gallagher also won the 200m again, with a time of 25.76; his teammate Addyson Skyles timed at 27.31.

The Portland Interscholastic League is governed by the Oregon School Activities Association, which states in its <a href="https://www.osaa.org/docs/handbooks/GenderIdentityParticipationBP.pdf">handbook</a>, “The OSAA endeavors to allow students to participate for the athletic or activity program of their consistently asserted gender identity while providing a fair and safe environment for all students. As with Rule 8.2 regarding Duration of Eligibility / Graduation, rules such as this one promotes harmony and fair competition among member schools by maintaining equality of eligibility and increase the number of students who will have an opportunity to participate in interscholastic activities.”
The Daily Mail <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/othersports/article-14523127/Trans-sports-feud-Oregon-ada-gallagher-track.html">noted</a>, “According to an NCSA college recruiting profile, Gallagher &#8211; who is listed as 5ft 10ins at 155lbs &#8211; writes: ‘I&#8217;m able to continue running when thousands of people wish for me to stop and doubt my integrity.’”
After Trump issued his executive order, which <a href="https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/executive-order-14201-keeping-men-out-womens-sports">declared</a>, “It is the policy of the United States to rescind all funds from educational programs that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities, which results in the endangerment, humiliation, and silencing of women and girls and deprives them of privacy,” Oregon House Minority Leader Christine Drazan, R-Canby, stated she would introduce a bill to amend Oregon’s laws regarding boys in girls’ sports. “Women have fought for — and earned — respect and support for themselves in sports and have made incredible gains in doing so. We must defend that progress and stand up for fairness,” she said.
Oregon Senate Minority Leader Daniel Bonham, R-The Dalles, introduced <a href="https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2025R1/Downloads/MeasureDocument/SB618/Introduced">Senate Bill 618</a>, which stated:

Attorney General Pam Bondi <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pam-bondi-fires-warning-shot-at-maine-over-womens-sports-cannot-ignore-federal-law">warned</a> Maine that it must comply with the president&#8217;s executive order banning men from women&#8217;s sports and spaces. Earlier this week, the Trump administration <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-admin-gives-maine-10-days-to-comply-with-wh-block-males-from-female-sports">gave</a> Maine educational bodies ten days to adhere to its revised Title IX rules. The move follows a rather dramatic scene at the White House, when President Donald Trump challenged Maine Governor Janet Mills (D) for refusing to follow the law on males in girls’ sports.

Two high school girls in Louisiana were charged with lying to police after they attempted to frame a male teacher they claimed was sending inappropriate messages to a student.
The two girls, who have not been named because they are minors, were charged with one count each of false swearing for the purpose of violating public health or safety (a felony), cyberstalking, and online impersonation, according to <a href="https://www.lpso.net/2025/01/06/two-high-school-girls-charged-for-trying-to-frame-teacher-for-inappropriate-messages/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a press release</a> from Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, Sheriff Craig Webre.
“Our juvenile detectives are diligent and take claims of inappropriate behavior very seriously,” Webre said in the press release. “They are, however, equally serious about false claims. Someone’s life can be instantly ruined by a false allegation, and I am proud that our investigators were able to get to the bottom of this. Technology has made it very easy for people to try to manipulate the truth, but technology also makes it easy for investigators to ultimately find the truth.”
On December 18, the sheriff said, someone reported to the police that a male teacher at Central Lafourche High School had been sending inappropriate messages to a 16-year-old girl who was a student. Upon investigation, detectives found that the 16-year-old and her 15-year-old friend had conspired to frame the teacher.
At first, the two girls said they had received inappropriate messages from the teacher through an online instant messaging platform. Over the next two weeks, detectives investigated the claims, interviewing everyone involved and searching their phones and accounts on the platform.
Detectives soon learned that the two teen girls had created fake accounts impersonating the teacher and used those accounts to send bogus messages. They then sent screenshots of those messages to their friends to frame the teacher.

Detectives were able to prove that the male teacher had not sent any of the messages or photos the girls claimed he sent, and one of the girls eventually confessed to the crime. The sheriff’s office declared the teacher to be the “crime victim” and stated that he “has been cleared of all allegations,” something rare when it comes to false accusations.
Both girls were charged on January 6 with falsely reporting a crime to police, cyberstalking, and impersonating the teacher online. They were released into the custody of their parents but were placed on electronic monitoring, the sheriff’s office said.
“We are shocked and appalled to learn of the actions of two of our students,” Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Jarod Martin said in the press release. “The allegations against one of our teachers were false and malicious, and we appreciate the efficiency of investigators in uncovering the source of these messages. Such attacks on a teacher’s credibility and reputation are concerning and can inhibit their ability to effectively educate our children. We are committed to investigating all allegations of misconduct in order to provide a safe environment conducive to learning and working for all of our students and staff.”

A high school girls&#8217; volleyball team forfeited a California state playoff game — and their season — over a trans-identifying male player on the opposing team, the girls&#8217; school said last week, calling the decision &#8220;heartbreaking.&#8221;
The Christian high school, Stone Ridge Christian in Merced, about a two hour drive east of San Jose, announced Friday that they would forfeit Saturday&#8217;s game against San Francisco Waldorf.
&#8220;Unfortunately, we were just informed that our opponent, San Francisco Waldorf, has a male athlete playing for their team,&#8221; Stone Ridge Christian administrator Julie Fagundes <a href="https://sjvsun.com/news/merced/merced-high-school-forfeits-volleyball-game-over-transgender-opponent/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in a message to families.
The school was clear about why they made the decision to forfeit.
&#8220;At SRC, we believe God&#8217;s Word is authoritative and infallible. It is Truth. And as Genesis makes clear, God wonderfully and immutably created each person as male or female. We do not believe sex is changeable and we do not intend to participate in events that send a different message,&#8221; Stone Ridge Christian wrote.

&#8220;This is a heartbreaking end to our season, but I hope you will join me in congratulating these outstanding student-athletes. SRC is proud of them,&#8221; Stone Ridge Christian said.
The alleged male athlete, Henry Hanlon, is <a href="https://www.outkick.com/sports/male-student-reportedly-dominating-girls-sports-at-san-francisco-high-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> San Francisco Waldorf&#8217;s star player and captain.
Hanlon scored at least a third of the school&#8217;s points in four consecutive games back in January.
The teams play under the California Interscholastic Federation, which enacted &#8220;Gender Identity Participation&#8221; rules in 2013.

They just suggested that what I said was crazy, because how can you possibly have a functioning country without a Department of Education? It&#8217;s not like we invented the telephone, won two world wars, or landed on the moon without a Department of Education. We definitely needed a Department of Education to do all of that stuff. And I responded to Kamala Harris&#8217; campaign, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2LV0HY7ock" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outlining</a> all of the reasons why the Department of Education and our public school system are a complete disaster.
What I didn&#8217;t talk about at the time — and what almost no one ever talks about in this country — is what the alternative is. It&#8217;s one thing to point out failures. It&#8217;s another thing to suggest tangible improvements. What does it look like to have political leaders who actually care about the education system of their country, and want to make it as good as it can possibly be? What should those leaders be doing, exactly?
This week, thanks to <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/the-ccp-cloned-americas-leading-stem-high-school-and-u-s-educators-helped/">reporting</a> from National Review and The Daily Wire&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/virginia-school-system-sold-china-a-handbook-on-how-to-clone-americas-top-stem-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Luke Rosiak</a>, we know what they&#8217;ve been doing in China. It turns out that officials in China are very serious about improving their education system — to the point that they&#8217;ve effectively cloned the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, Virginia. 
If you&#8217;re not familiar with it, Thomas Jefferson — until recently — was the number-one public high school in the United States. In China, they now have 20 so-called &#8220;Thomas Schools,&#8221; all of which are clones of the Thomas Jefferson school in Fairfax. These Chinese &#8220;Thomas School&#8221; clones have copied pretty much everything from the Thomas Jefferson School in the United States, including curriculums and floor plans. Say what you will about China, but they&#8217;re in this to win. They&#8217;re playing for keeps, and they&#8217;re willing to steal from their opponents if necessary — just like, say, Bill Belichick or the Houston Astros.
Except in this case, there wasn&#8217;t actually much stealing involved. It turns out that Thomas Jefferson handed all of this information over voluntarily. The story of how exactly China managed to clone Thomas Jefferson raises a lot of obvious concerns from a national security perspective, and the word &#8220;treason&#8221; might cross your mind as you hear the details. I&#8217;ll go into that shortly.
But first, it&#8217;s important to note that there&#8217;s one aspect of our Thomas Jefferson that China hasn&#8217;t copied. They didn&#8217;t clone Thomas Jefferson&#8217;s new DEI admissions policy, which was implemented a few years ago. This DEI admissions policy <a href="https://www.fox5dc.com/news/thomas-jefferson-high-schools-admissions-policy-does-not-discriminate-against-asian-americans-court">got rid of</a> standardized tests. It also gave bonuses to applicants who couldn&#8217;t speak proper English, and implemented a quota system so that every middle school in Fairfax County got an equal number of slots in the new class at Thomas Jefferson. The result is that student quality has <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/thomas-jefferson-high-schools-number-of-students-named-national-merit-semifinalists-decreases-by-over-half-year-to-year/">dropped</a> by nearly 40%, as measured by the number of national merit semifinalists that Thomas Jefferson produces. Thomas Jefferson is no longer the top public high school in the United States. It was too exceptional and too impressive, so the liberals running Fairfax County, and the administrators of the school, decided to destroy it. And that&#8217;s exactly what they&#8217;ve done.
But before they ruined it, they raised a lot of money from the Communist Party of China. From 2014 to 2021, entities in China sent more than $3.5 million to something called the Thomas Jefferson Partnership Fund. This is a nonprofit that was set up to raise money for a renovation of Thomas Jefferson. The nonprofit was based in the school and had the school principal on its board, so there&#8217;s obviously a very close relationship there.
So what did China get in exchange for this $3.5 million? When we first learned about these payments around a year ago, we didn&#8217;t have a lot of detail on that question. Here&#8217;s a report from last year:

So, we learned there were payments coming into Fairfax from China, but we didn&#8217;t know exactly what they were for. Now we do. According to National Review, in addition to course materials and outlines, Chinese officials wanted to learn about &#8220;construction and administration&#8221; at the school, as well as &#8220;extensive advice on how to manage a school like Thomas Jefferson.&#8221; 
Thomas Jefferson&#8217;s director of student services even wrote in an email that the Chinese wanted a handbook that would tell them how to &#8220;clone&#8221; the school — including research output from students. From <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/the-ccp-cloned-americas-leading-stem-high-school-and-u-s-educators-helped/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Review</a>: &#8220;Foreign &#8216;donations&#8217; came with a few requests: that [Thomas Jefferson nonprofit] hand over blueprints, floor plans, curricula, lab photographs, and thumb drives with Senior Student Research projects. &#8230; Chinese officials requested, and gained access to, examples of past student research projects, without student consent.&#8221;
Maybe the Chinese wanted these senior research projects because they involved materials that students created alongside the leading research institutes in the United States, including the NIH and George Washington University. So there are obvious espionage-related implications here as well.
To be clear, there&#8217;s no question that senior leaders at Thomas Jefferson were aware that all of this was going on. There&#8217;s even an email from Thomas Jefferson&#8217;s assistant principal, in which he says that the nonprofit has a contract with a Chinese foundation, &#8220;that they will pay $1 million in exchange for help getting their schools up and running in China, called the Thomas Schools.&#8221; Some of these Chinese officials also visited the school.

On top of that, there&#8217;s evidence that the Fairfax County Public School system tried to cover up what it was doing. The group that actually uncovered this scheme, and which led to the National Review&#8217;s reporting, is called Parents Defending Education, or PDE. They spent more than a year working on this story. And it only took so long because of all the roadblocks that Fairfax County put in their way. When PDE made a public records request seeking information about the schools&#8217; coordination with China, Fairfax County tried to charge them nearly $36,000 in fees in order to produce the documents. They probably expected that would scare PDE off. But it didn&#8217;t work. The group ended up paying $18,000 for some of the documents, which ultimately exposed what was going on.
The word &#8220;treason&#8221; gets thrown around a lot these days. And there&#8217;s a lot of discussion about how difficult it is to prove treason under the U.S. Constitution and so on. But if we&#8217;re speaking in the colloquial sense of the word, this seems a lot like treason. These people were orchestrating the sale of proprietary information to China, to benefit Chinese schools, while simultaneously kneecapping our own schools with DEI admissions policies. They didn&#8217;t sell those DEI admissions policies to China because everyone involved knows that they&#8217;re garbage. They&#8217;re worse than useless. And the proponents of DEI themselves seem to recognize that, at least when it comes time to make some money from the Chinese Communist Party.
The whole scam is reminiscent of how Chinese billionaires will promote transgenderism in the United States, but not in China. It&#8217;s deliberate sabotage from the people running the single most successful school district in the United States, in Fairfax County — which is also home to CIA headquarters and much of the intelligence community, along with the workforce at the Pentagon. The former principal of Thomas Jefferson, Evan Glazer, even suggested that he didn&#8217;t think twice about giving inside info to our chief foreign adversary because it would be racist to discriminate based on national origin. But when it comes to discriminating against students using affirmative action admissions policies, school administrators in Fairfax have no objection.
There have been a lot of parents speaking out at school board meetings over the past few years. They&#8217;ve been complaining about the poor quality of their childrens&#8217; education, since many schools are now graduating students who can&#8217;t even read. Parents have also been understandably furious about the deliberate efforts to indoctrinate their children with gender ideology and to expose them to explicit pornography in some cases. Some of those parents, as you might remember, were investigated by the DOJ. Meanwhile we&#8217;re allowing China to copy the blueprint of our most successful schools, and the DOJ hasn&#8217;t said a word. You won&#8217;t find a clearer illustration of why our entire education system is in a tailspin. 
Right now the government officials who are truly interested in our education system aren&#8217;t located in Washington. They probably aren&#8217;t working for your local school board either. Thanks to the work of Parents Defending Education, we know that, unfortunately for children in this country, they&#8217;re in Beijing.

On Monday, the Liberty Justice Center, famous for its victory in the 2018 case Janus v. John Parks, an Oregon track and field coach for 40 years, wrote an open letter proposing a separate division for transgender athletes in a track and field state championship. In June, he was fired by the Lake Oswego School District and the Lake Oswego School Board. He was accused of harassing transgender athletes at recent track meets, a claim Parks says is false.

“School employees do not lose their constitutional right to free speech when they step onto school grounds,” Buck Dougherty, Senior Counsel at the Liberty Justice Center, stated. “Coach Parks faced unjust and unconstitutional retaliation at the hands of the Lake Oswego School District and School Board. We urge the court to grant a preliminary injunction to uphold his First Amendment rights.”
In Janus, the Supreme Court held  that the State of Illinois’ “extraction of agency fees from nonconsenting public-sector employees violated the First Amendment,” <a href="https://www.oyez.org/cases/2017/16-1466">according</a> to Oyez, an exploration and archive of Supreme Court rulings, adding, “the Court concluded that the state’s collection of agency fees from nonconsenting public employees was a violation of the First Amendment &#8230; the Court stated that requiring individuals to endorse ideas they disagreed with runs counter to First Amendment principles, and that even under a more permissive standard than the ‘exacting’ strict scrutiny that the Court had applied in evaluating the constitutionality of agency fees in the past, the Illinois scheme could not pass muster.”

Motion Filed To Restore Track Coach’s Job After He Was Fired For Protecting Girls’ Sports

The father of the 14-year-old boy suspected of killing four people during a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, was arrested Thursday and charged with murder for allegedly allowing his son to have access to a weapon. 
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) announced that the father had been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children. 
GBI Director Chris Hosey <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzeVgzXixmU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that the charges stemmed from the father “knowingly allowing his son” to “possess a weapon” but did not provide any further details. 
The suspected attacker, who will not be named per Daily Wire policy, has been charged with four felony counts of murder and is expected to be tried as an adult. 
Those killed in the mass shooting were 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo and math teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53. Nine others were injured in the shooting, which was stopped by a school resource officer who confronted the attacker. 
Earlier this year, the parents of a teenager who shot and killed four students at a school in Oxford, Michigan, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/parents-of-michigan-school-shooter-sentenced" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were sentenced</a> to 10 to 15 years in prison, the first time in history parents have been convicted over a mass shooting committed by their child. 
“This is a time for all of us as a community and a state to come together and remain vigilant,” Hosey said at a press conference on Thursday. “Students must be supported and encouraged here in this community and across this state to contact a member of their school faculty with any and all concerns of suspicious activity that they may see.” 
In an update on its investigation into the attack, GBI said that there had been reports of other students making threats against schools throughout the state and that police had made arrests in each instance. 
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith announced on Thursday that the nine injured during the attack are all expected to fully recover, though several are still hospitalized. 
“A young person brought a gun into a school and committed an evil act and he took lives and he injured many other people — not only physically but mentally,” he said. 
The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fbi">FBI</a> acknowledged on Wednesday night that it had received tips last year about the suspected shooter but did not have probable cause to make an arrest.

“Those that are deceased are heroes in my book,” Hosey <a href="https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/apalachee-high-school-shooting-victims-what-we-know" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “Those that are in the hospital recovering right now are heroes in my book. But also the heroes that we need to remember is our faculty and staff here at this school. They acted admirably, they were heroes in the action they took. The protocols of this school and system activated today prevented this from being a much larger tragedy.”
Aspinwall, the defensive coordinator for Apalachee’s football team, was remembered by his students as a solid role model. 
&#8220;It&#8217;s just so hard to think that somebody that you spent so much time with, because this is my second year with coach, but spending so much time, like family basically,&#8221; sophomore football player Isaiah Hooks <a href="https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/apalachee-high-school-shooting-victims-what-we-know" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox5 Atlanta. &#8220;So, turning around, knowing that he&#8217;s not going to be there.&#8221; 
David Phenix, a teacher at the school, was injured during the shooting and required hospitalization. 
“We are so thankful for all the texts, calls, and messages about my dad, David Phenix. There was a shooting this morning at Apalachee High School and my dad was shot in the foot and in the hip, shattering his hip bone,” his daughter said in a Facebook post. “He arrived to the hospital alert and awake. He just got out of surgery and is stable.”
“This is everybody’s worst nightmare. I just want to offer my sincere condolences and our thoughts and prayers to the families that have lost loved ones, for those that are injured and continuing to fight,” Georgia Republican Governor Brian Kemp said while standing beside Hosey.

Hosey said that the shooter used an AR-style rifle and that there was no evidence that there were any additional shooters, though investigators were looking into any leads of potential associates of the gunman. 
The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fbi">FBI</a> acknowledged on Wednesday night that it had received tips last year about the suspected shooter but did not have probable cause to make an arrest. Hosey said the alleged shooter “will be charged with murder and handled as an adult.”

After being confronted by a school resource officer, the suspected shooter &#8220;gave up, got on the ground and the deputy took him into custody,&#8221; Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith <a href="https://x.com/kaitlancollins/status/1831433074288291983" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. The 14-year-old gunman killed two teachers and two students before he surrendered, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/apalachee-high-school-shooting-georgia-09-04-24/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The sheriff added that at this time, law enforcement is not aware of any connection between the gunman and those he shot.
The nine victims who were wounded in the shooting were hospitalized after being shot &#8220;in some capacity,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/kaitlancollins/status/1831433237052453244" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Smith.
&#8220;I went to school in this school system. My kids go to this school system. I’m proud of this school system,&#8221; Smith said. &#8220;My heart hurts for these kids, my heart hurts for our community, but I want to make it very clear that hate will not prevail in this county. I want that to be very clear and known. Love will prevail over what happened today, I assure you of that.&#8221;
The shooter, who will not be named per Daily Wire policy, will be charged with murder and tried as an adult, said Chris Hosey, the director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Police responded to an active shooter situation at Apalachee High School at 10:23 a.m. ET. One student told the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/georgia-high-school-lockdown-3969d34cf6a7adc787facf21c469ef4d" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a> that he heard 10 gunshots and then heard a law enforcement officer yelling at someone, telling him to put his gun down. Another student told <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/police-respond-incident-high-school-georgia/story?id=113381873" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ABC News</a> that he heard the gunfire ring out while he was in chemistry class.
&#8220;My teacher goes and opens the door to see what&#8217;s going on. Another teacher comes running in and tells her to close the door because there&#8217;s an active shooter,&#8221; he said. The student added that they all &#8220;huddled up&#8221; in the classroom and heard someone knock on the door and yell, &#8220;Open up!&#8221; before more gunshots were heard.
Students who survived the shooting were reunited with their parents over an hour later at around 11:30 a.m. Apalachee High School is 45 miles east of Atlanta and has nearly 2,000 students.
