Dejan Milojević, an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors and a mentor to NBA star Nikola Jokic, died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack in Utah before his team was scheduled to play the Jazz. He was 46 years old. 
Milojević was hospitalized after he suffered a heart attack on Tuesday night while at a team dinner in Salt Lake City. The Serbian-born coach died at the hospital Wednesday morning, NBC Sports <a href="https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/dejan-milojevic-dies-medical-emergency/1692758/">reported</a>. Milojević is survived by his wife Natasa and two children, Nikola and Masa. 
“We are absolutely devastated by Dejan’s sudden passing,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/WarriorsPR/status/1747716439983923592">statement</a>. “This is a shocking and tragic blow for everyone associated with the Warriors and an incredibly difficult time for his family, friends, and all of us who had the incredible pleasure to work with him.”
Milojević helped coach and mentor multiple NBA players, including two-time MVP Jokic, Los Angeles Clippers center Ivica Zubac, Orlando Magic center Goga Bitadze, and Houston Rockets center Boban Marjanovic, according to <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/warriors-assistant-coach-dejan-milojevic-dies">NBA.com</a>. The 46-year-old coached for eight years in Europe before joining the Warriors staff, and he was also an assistant coach for the Serbian national team. 
Before his coaching career began, Milojević was a star player in the Adriatic League where he won three straight MVP awards in 2004, 2005, and 2006. After joining the Warriors in 2021, Milojević was part of the team that went on to win the NBA championship in 2022. He was in his third season as a Warriors assistant coach. 
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called Milojević “a beloved colleague and dear friend to so many in the global basketball community.”

Dallas Mavericks star point guard Luka Doncic also posted a tribute to Milojević, simply writing, “Rest in peace deki! 💔💔💔”

I&#8217;m sitting here with my 91-year-old dad this morning &#8212; who is doing better every day since his heart attack last week &#8212; and wondering how quickly the next thirty years will go, if I&#8217;m lucky enough to have them.&#8221;

&#8220;Obviously, we&#8217;ve all been worried, and anxious to understand what comes next,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I&#8217;m happy to report that he&#8217;s home, and beginning what could be a long road back.&#8221;

&#8220;I found myself screaming into the phone—then feeling terror when the EMT shouted, &#8216;Stay with me, John! Stay with me!'&#8221; she added. &#8220;Four days later, I realize our good fortune. Especially since 50% of all heart attack victims do not make it to the hospital alive.&#8221;

A <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/turkey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Turkish</a> lawmaker collapsed on Tuesday immediately after declaring that Israel cannot &#8220;escape the wrath of God.&#8221;
Video from the Turkish Grand National Assembly showed Saadet Party Kocaeli Deputy Hasan Bitmez, 53, giving a speech before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when he collapsed.
&#8220;Even if history remains silent, the truth will not remain silent. They think that if they get rid of us, there will be no problem,&#8221; he <a href="https://www.ynetnews.com/article/bjyxwblip" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a translation of his speech. &#8220;However, if you get rid of us, you will not be able to escape the torment of conscience. Even if you escape the torment of history, you will not be able to escape the wrath of God.&#8221;
Immediately after making the remarks he turned and collapsed onto the floor as people rushed in to help him.
Turkish officials later said that &#8220;during angiography, it was seen that two main veins were completely blocked, and after the intervention did not yield any results, he was connected to a heart-lung pump.&#8221;
&#8220;He is now vital with a heart-lung pump,&#8221; they added.

&#8220;Supernatural&#8221; actor Mark Sheppard told fans on Saturday that he was lucky to be alive after suffering six &#8220;massive heart attacks,&#8221; adding that doctors had brought him &#8220;back from the dead&#8221; four times during the course of his emergency treatment.
Sheppard, who played Crowley the demon on the long-running CW drama, shared a selfie from his hospital bed along with a few details of what had happened.
&#8220;You’re not going to believe this! Was on my way to an appointment yesterday when I collapsed in my kitchen. Six massive heart attacks later, and being brought back from dead 4 times I apparently had a 100% blockage in my LAD [left anterior descending artery],&#8221; Sheppard wrote. &#8220;The Widowmaker.&#8221;

Actor Misha Collins, who played the angel Castiel alongside Sheppard&#8217;s Crowley, ribbed his colleague for overdoing things. &#8220;Mark! You don&#8217;t need to do the most and biggest every time! 6 heart attacks? 2 or 3 would have been impressive enough. You&#8217;ve impressed us, okay. Now stop with this heal up and get back on the road with us. Love you, pal,&#8221; he commented.
Actress Felicia Day, who also starred alongside Sheppard on &#8220;Supernatural,&#8221; said, &#8220;OMG Mark I am so glad you’re recovering this is awful! Sending all my love to you and the family.&#8221;

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kevin-spacey-honored-with-italian-cinema-award-thanks-them-for-having-balls-to-invite-him-following-sexual-misconduct-accusations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kevin Spacey</a> said he was rushed to the hospital earlier this week, fearing he was having a heart attack while visiting a museum in Uzbekistan at the historical site of Afrasiyab.
During the 64-year-old actor&#8217;s speech on Monday night at the 15th Tashkent International Film Festival, he discussed how he &#8220;suddenly felt his entire left arm go numb&#8221; at the museum earlier that day, the <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/10/04/kevin-spacey-rushed-to-hospital-fearing-heart-attack-reports/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=nypost" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a> reported.
&#8220;I experienced something here today that was unexpected,&#8221; Spacey told the crowd.
&#8220;I was looking at these extraordinary murals on the walls and I suddenly felt my entire left arm go numb for about eight seconds,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I shook it off, but I immediately told the people I was with and we went immediately to the [&#8230;] medical center.&#8221;
The actor was then rushed to Innova Diagnostic Clinic. Despite his concerns that he had a heart attack, the doctors released him after finding no &#8220;problem with his heart.&#8221;
&#8220;I spent the afternoon there having a variety of tests,&#8221; the actor said. &#8220;Staff took care of me, and even put me through an MRI&#8221;.
&#8220;Everything turned out to be completely normal, and I&#8217;m of course grateful it&#8217;s not anything more serious,&#8221; he added. &#8220;It also made me really take a moment and think about how fragile life is. For all of us.&#8221;

In July, the &#8220;House of Cards&#8221; star was acquitted on nine charges in his sexual assault trial in the United Kingdom.
In a courtroom, Spacey reportedly wept after Justice Mark Wall said he was cleared of all charges and concluded that the &#8220;defendant may be discharged,&#8221; the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/kevin-spacey-uk-trial-verdict-not-guilty-1235543727/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hollywood Reporter</a> reported.
Spacey previously pleaded not guilty to nine counts stemming from allegations that he had sexually assaulted four men between 2004 and 2013 in London, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/actor-kevin-spacey-acquitted-all-nine-sexual-offence-charges-london-trial-2023-07-26/?taid=64c1317bbbd95200010df6dc&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reuters</a> noted. The allegations ranged from unwanted touching to aggressive fondling to, in one case, performing oral sex on an unconscious actor.
In November 2017, Spacey was fired from the Netflix series &#8220;House of Cards&#8221; following a string of sexual assault and misconduct allegations against him.

“Better Call Saul” and “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/breaking-bad">Breaking Bad</a>” actor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">Bob Odenkirk</a> acknowledged that he ignored the advice of a “cranky conservative” doctor and later had a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/heart-attack">heart attack</a>. 
The 60-year-old discussed what happened during a recent episode of the <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bob-erin-odenkirk/id1523507379?i=1000627705798">podcast</a> “Don’t Ask Tig.” 
&#8220;When I was 50, I went in, he was a heart doctor, Cedar-Sinai, and he had signs up all around his office at this point [saying] &#8216;We do not accept Obamacare,&#8217; and I hated this side of him that I only learned over time,&#8221; Odenkirk said.
The actor went on to say how the doctor, who he&#8217;d been seeing for 20 years, recommended taking statins to help lower his cholesterol. &#8220;And I said, &#8216;Well, I don&#8217;t know. I don&#8217;t have heart disease in my family.&#8217; He goes, &#8216;Just take &#8217;em,&#8221;&#8216; he went on. 
The “Nobody” star said he ended up getting a second opinion, and that doctor said he did not need medication. 
Odenkirk endured a near-fatal heart attack in 2021 while filming the award-winning series “Better Call Saul.” Per <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/07/25/1112731181/better-call-saul-breaking-bad-bob-odenkirk-peter-gould-heart-attack">NPR</a>, the actor&#8217;s heart stopped beating for 18 minutes.
The &#8220;Breaking Bad&#8221; alum said he should have listened to the first doctor despite disagreeing with his conservative political leanings.

The actor said he returned to work after five weeks of recovery and felt more energized than ever. 
&#8220;I came out of it with a strangely fresh energy towards my whole life, like I was born again,&#8221; he explained, per NPR. &#8220;Like, &#8216;Hey, everybody!.. Let&#8217;s go back to work and make stuff!'&#8221;

Transgender patients who undergo hormone therapy have a significantly increased risk of serious health problems, such as stroke, heart attack, and pulmonary embolism, according to a new study.
A <a href="https://www.acc.org/About-ACC/Press-Releases/2023/02/22/20/29/Hormone-Therapy-for-Gender-Dysphoria-May-Raise-Cardiovascular-Risks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new study</a> presented at an American College of Cardiology conference found that transgender patients who take cross-sex hormones had an increased risk of dangerous blood clots that can create blockages in the brain, heart, and lungs, according to a press release. The study found the subjects had nearly seven times the risk of ischemic stroke, six times the risk of the most severe type of heart attack and nearly five times the risk of pulmonary embolism, compared to those with gender dysphoria who never used hormone therapy.
&#8220;It&#8217;s all about risks and benefits,&#8221; said Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed, a third-year resident at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Darby, Pennsylvania, and the study&#8217;s lead author. &#8220;Starting transitioning is a big part of a person&#8217;s life and helping them feel more themselves, but hormone replacement therapy also has a lot of side effects; it&#8217;s not a risk-free endeavor.&#8221;
This new study, which will be presented at the Annual Scientific Session Together With the World Congress of Cardiology in March, is the largest to date to examine the cardiovascular risks associated with hormone replacement therapy in people with gender dysphoria, a population that has not been well-researched. 
The study retrospectively analyzed hospital records of more than 21,000 individuals with gender dysphoria, out of which 1,675 had undergone cross-sex hormone therapy. Male-to-female transgender patients often take estrogen to induce the appearance of female secondary sex characteristics, and female-to-male transgender patients frequently take testosterone to induce the appearance of male secondary sex characteristics. 
Researchers said that both estrogen and testosterone are known to increase the clotting activity of blood, which could explain the increase in clotting-related cardiovascular events. Those taking hormone replacement therapy in the study also had higher rates of substance use disorder and hypothyroidism.
An ischemic stroke, for which patients in the study who had undergone hormone therapy were seven times more likely to experience, is a type of stroke that occurs when a blood clot blocks a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain, leading to a lack of blood flow and oxygen to brain tissue. This can cause damage to brain cells and result in various neurological symptoms, such as weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, speech difficulties, and vision problems. 
Patients in the study who had undergone hormone treatment also had six times the increased risk of a serious type of heart attack known as ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), which occurs when there is a complete blockage of one of the major arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. The interruption of blood flow to the heart can cause significant damage to the heart muscle, and if not treated promptly, can be life-threatening.

In the study, the transgender patients who underwent hormone therapy also had five times the increased risk of a pulmonary embolism – a blockage in one of the arteries in the lungs. This can lead to serious health complications, such as damage to the lungs and other organs, and even death.
The researchers suggested that medical and family history should be considered before starting hormone replacement therapy, and individuals considering this therapy should be informed of all the potential risks. They also recommended studying the potential long-term cardiovascular and other health effects of cross-sex hormones, as the use of these therapies becomes more common. The researchers noted that the study had limitations, such as not accounting for the duration of hormone replacement therapy or the age at which it was initiated, and further research was needed to inform clinical decisions.

On the eve of Election Day, a prominent internal medicine doctor pointed out that although the public has focused on Pennsylvania Democratic senatorial candidate John Fetterman’s possible brain impairment from the stroke he had last spring, no one was talking about the cardiac problems associated with it.
Dr. Marc Siegel, from NYU Langone hospital, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6315134624112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke on Fox News</a>.
“We talked about how concerned I am and others are about the impact of this stroke and his comprehension ability and his ability to make decisions and executive function, which he’d have to do daily in office and he’d have to juggle many balls at once,” Siegel told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson. “And a lot of us have a lot of concern about that and have been calling for his records, for transparency, which he hasn’t shown. He’s shown some courage, as we’ve said, but no transparency.”
Then Siegel segued into a discussion of Fetterman’s underlying heart problems, saying, “But you know what we haven’t talked about? We haven’t talked about his heart. And there’s a lot of info about his heart that’s very concerning.”
“In 2017, a real cardiologist saw him, Dr. Ramesh Chandrah in Pittsburgh, who said that his legs were swollen and his heart was weak, and he put him on medication, and you know what Fetterman did?” Siegel asked rherotically. “He didn’t show up to a doctor for five years and he didn’t take that medication. Doctors would all be horrified by that. Instead, he had the stroke and then he went back and saw Dr. Chandra again, and Dr, Chandra got involved and they put a pacemaker in and a defibrillator in.”
“And Fetterman himself has said that his stroke was due to a blood clot from the heart,” Siegel pointed out. “That is very significant &#8230; because a study out of a journal called Stroke, very prominent journal looking at over 6,000 people from Great Britain, has found that if your blood clot comes from the heart, you have more than a 60% chance of either not living for five years or having another stroke within those five years. Greater than 60% chance.”
Siegel concluded, “So I say to the voters of Pennsylvania tonight who are ready to check a box tomorrow, ‘I think before you check a box you should consider a statistic like that: Greater than 60% chance that someone like Fetterman, with a heart in his condition, having had a stroke, will either have a recurrence or won’t survive the term.’”
In October, Dr. Clifford Chen, Fetterman’s doctor, contended his patient was recovering well but still had trouble with “auditory processing.”
“It later emerged that Chen, who works out of a clinic in Duquesne, a suburb of Pittsburgh, had given cash to Fetterman&#8217;s campaign and dozens of other Democrat causes,” The Daily Mail <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11334325/John-Fettermans-doctor-cleared-Senate-hopeful-work-stroke-Democrat-DONOR.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a>.

Florida Surgeon General Joseph A. Ladapo, MD, PhD, said in a statement Friday afternoon that the state now recommends against giving men ages 18 to 39 mRNA <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/covid-19-vaccine" target="_blank" rel="noopener">coronavirus vaccines</a>, citing a heightened risk of cardiac-related death.
The statement from Ladapo comes at the conclusion of an analysis conducted by the Florida Department of Health that was carried out using a self-controlled case series, a technique used to evaluate vaccine safety, the state said.
&#8220;This analysis found that there is an 84% increase in the relative incidence of cardiac-related death among males 18-39 years old within 28 days following mRNA vaccination,&#8221; the statement <a href="https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/FLDOH/bulletins/3312697" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &#8220;With a high level of global immunity to COVID-19, the benefit of vaccination is likely outweighed by this abnormally high risk of cardiac-related death among men in this age group. Non-mRNA vaccines were not found to have these increased risks.&#8221;
&#8220;As such, the State Surgeon General recommends against males aged 18 to 39 from receiving mRNA COVID-19 vaccines,&#8221; the statement continued. &#8220;Those with preexisting cardiac conditions, such as myocarditis and pericarditis, should take particular caution when making this decision.&#8221;
Most importantly, the analysis found that non-mRNA vaccines, such as the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine, &#8220;were not found to have these increased risks among any population.&#8221;
The analysis <a href="https://floridahealthcovid19.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/20221007-guidance-mrna-covid19-vaccines-doc.pdf?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery">said</a> that the mRNA vaccines also increased the risk of cardiac-related death in men over the age of 60 by 10%.
“Studying the safety and efficacy of any medications, including vaccines, is an important component of public health,” said Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo. “Far less attention has been paid to safety and the concerns of many individuals have been dismissed – these are important findings that should be communicated to Floridians.”
One study in Denmark has found that the absolute risk of two heart conditions (myocarditis and pericarditis) after taking a COVID mRNA vaccine varied between the type of vaccine taken.
&#8220;The corresponding rates of myocarditis or pericarditis within 28 days of vaccination in the Denmark study was 1.8 per 100 000 vaccinated individuals (95% CI, 0.8-3.4 per 100 000 vaccinated individuals) for BNT162b2 and 9.4 per 100 000 vaccinated individuals (95% CI, 5.0-16.0 per 100 000 vaccinated individuals) for mRNA-1273; dose 1 findings were not reported,&#8221; the Journal of the American Medical Association <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2793555">reported</a>.

On a healthy, seed oil-free diet there is no “bad” cholesterol. But when your diet is full of seed oils, LDL becomes a problem.
<h4>The Heart Healthy Oil That’s Anything But</h4>
You may have noticed a pretty, red, heart-healthy label on certain vegetable oils. What you may not have noticed is an asterisk under the claim that says words to the effect of there’s only preliminary and limited evidence to support this statement. That snippet of legalese has quite a history behind it.
In the 1950s, margarine and cooking oil advertisers promoted their products as healthy due to the known cholesterol-lowering effect of polyunsaturates — the main fatty acid in seed oils. A string of prominent doctors objected to these tactics, since there was no evidence whatsoever to support the claim. Decades of wrangling finally resulted in a law prohibiting the promotion of margarine “or any other food, fat, or food oil” as a way of preventing disease unless it was grounded in science. A happy example of the Federal Trade Commission protecting the public that was over and done with back in 1974.
Which leads to my next point: we are here, nearly 50 years later, with no further evidence to support the heart-healthy claim than with what we had back then. Yet, the idea that lowering cholesterol prevents heart disease is still planted into our minds and remains the foundation upon which all of preventative cardiology rests. If your LDL cholesterol, the so-called “bad” cholesterol, is “too high,” your doctor will put the fear of death into you until you lower it.
To be clear, the polyunsaturates in seed oils do successfully lower total and LDL cholesterol. This is supported by a great deal of evidence, and nobody debates this. What’s more, as the dairy and other saturated-fat, rich animal fats in our food supply have been increasingly replaced by seed oils, our cholesterol levels as a country have dropped across the board. The average American’s total cholesterol is about 20 points lower today than in the mid-1960s, when we first started tracking. This drop is attributable to diet change, not drugs. So it’s absolutely true that swapping saturated fat for polyunsaturated fat lowers cholesterol levels. Now, here’s a question for you: so what?
The end goal of these dietary recommendations is not to lower cholesterol — it’s to help you live longer. Dying with lower cholesterol levels, what one of my patients termed “a Harvard death,” is not the goal.
<h4>Keep Your Eye On The Ball</h4>
Although seed oils do lower cholesterol, they do not keep you alive. At least we don’t have any evidence yet to support that idea — after 70 years of looking for it. We do, however, have evidence that foods fried in these oils contain “extremely high levels” of toxins known to cause cancer and neurodegenerative disease. Rather shockingly, a <a href="https://www.bmj.com/content/353/bmj.i1246">2016 NIH study</a> showed that for every 30 points these oils cut cholesterol, “there was a 22% higher risk of death.” It’s difficult to know, however, what exactly the people in the study died from, as 146 of the original 295 autopsy files were lost.
What’s clouding the issue is the fact that we are dying less often from heart attacks today than we were back in 1961, when heart attack deaths peaked. But it would be incorrect to assume that the drop in heart attacks means these cholesterol-lowering oils are heart healthy — or, for that matter, that the decline had anything to do with our lower cholesterol. The biggest factor behind the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/society/2012/jan/26/heart-attack-deaths-fall-50-percent">50% drop</a> in heart attack death rates is the fact that we’re smoking less.— much less. In 1961, both heart attack deaths and smoking peaked at their all-time highest levels. The average American (including children, smokers, and nonsmokers) <a href="https://cancercontrol.cancer.gov/sites/default/files/2020-08/m08_2.pdf">smoked 4,000 cigarettes</a> that year. By 2010, the per capita rate of smoking had fallen to 1,000, and heart attacks reached their lowest point. Since then, smoking rates continue to fall, while heart attack deaths are leveling out and <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2778234">appear to be climbing again</a>.
I’d like to share a striking, though narrowly appreciated, secret: Harvard — the primary advocate for seed oils — has yet to nail down exactly how the polyunsaturated fats in these oils lower cholesterol. They don’t seem to care. Reviewing the medical literature reveals that, over the past 60 years, only two articles, found in <a href="https://academic.oup.com/jcem/article/91/2/398/2843254">The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology &amp; Metabolism</a> and <a href="https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article-abstract/42/3/560/4691820?redirectedFrom=PDF">The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition</a>, discuss the subject — both hypothetical.
Why should you care what Harvard’s nutrition leadership knows about seed oils?
Harvard is the biggest advocate of the cholesterol theory of heart disease, and thanks to the university, all of preventative cardiology rests on the idea that lowering cholesterol is beneficial. Harvard works with the American Heart Association (AHA) to shape the U.S. government dietary policy regarding fat. Our K-12 state-funded college education systems, nursing homes, prisons, hospitals, and all other government-funded organizations are required by law to feed us more polyunsaturates than saturates — all because they lower cholesterol. Yet, if you ask the average cardiologist how polyunsaturates lower cholesterol, or how they know this effect is beneficial, I doubt you’ll receive a good answer.
<h4>The Cholesterol Hypothesis Needs To Go</h4>
It’s high time cardiologists clue in, though. Because after decades of reductions in deadly heart attacks, since 2010, they’ve started to creep upwards again. The combined effects of cholesterol-lowering drugs, further cuts in smoking rates, and advanced emergency care and cardiac surgeries are collectively failing to stem the tide of deadly heart attacks. It’s not just due to the population aging, since the mortality rates for people 65 and older actually <a href="https://usafacts.org/data/topics/people-society/health/longevity/mortality-rate/">went down</a> between 2010-2019. There’s something very powerful driving this newly apparent trend.
Don’t look to the AHA for answers. It’s in its best interest that our notice in this recent increase in heart disease deaths is diminished. For 70 years, the cholesterol theory of heart disease has buttered its bread, so to speak. It literally can’t afford to change. For now, it’s much easier for it to cover up its mistakes by, for example, re-allocating deaths from the heart attack column to a different column, like hypertension, kidney disease, and more recently COVID. These and other efforts have prevented many doctors from noticing that eating seed oils and lowering cholesterol is failing to prevent <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIR.0000000000000757">heart</a> <a href="https://bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12889-021-11072-5/figures/2">attacks</a>. But, mark my words: as long as we keep eating polyunsaturated-rich seed oils, death rates in younger generations will continue to rise. Sooner or later this egregious trend will garner the attention it is due.
Thankfully, the cholesterol theory is not the only theory in town. There’s another theory to explain the genesis of heart attacks that’s quietly gaining momentum — in spite of being mostly relegated to technical journals that doctors don’t read. This theory connects all the dots, explaining how cigarette smoking causes heart disease — something the cholesterol theory cannot do — while also explaining why drugs that drop your LDL number down to the lowest possible level only work to prevent a second heart attack about 30% of the time. That 70% failure rate is pretty grim, given the many side effects you expose yourself to when you’re taking these drugs and the fact that you will be taking them for the rest of your life.
<h4>Oxidation: What Cigarettes And Seed Oil Both Have In Common</h4>
Seed oils and cigarette smoking cause heart attacks for similar reasons. Whether you smoke, or you eat foods cooked in seed oils, the same set of toxins may enter your arteries. These toxins cause oxidation. So this theory is called, logically enough, The Oxidation Theory of Atherosclerosis. The oxidation takes place inside tiny fat-transport vehicles called lipoproteins. According to the <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/%28SICI%291521-3773%2820000204%2939%3A3%3C585%3A%3AAID-ANIE585%3E3.0.CO%3B2-G">theory</a>, oxidation turns your lipoproteins from agents of nutrient delivery to agents of inflammation and disease.
What is oxidation, exactly? Technically, it’s the chemical reaction between oxygen and a fuel. The more familiar term is simply burning.
The oxidation theory explains that toxins from smoking and from cooking with polyunsaturated fats burn (oxidize) the interior of these tiny-fat transport vehicles. Seed oils play a dual role in the burning process, serving as both spark and fuel. That’s why the more polyunsaturated fat the vehicles carry, the faster the burning progresses. The transport vehicles include low density lipoprotein, or LDL (the so-called bad cholesterol), and high density lipoprotein, or HDL (the so-called good cholesterol), and a few others. These particles have slightly different functions in the body and normally they all do good stuff.
The oxidation theory tells us that lowering LDL may not be important at all, certainly not as important as preventing oxidation of LDL. So what do you do if you are one of the 40% of American adults with high cholesterol? Should you just take a statin?

Researchers at Yale University are challenging the idea of irreversible cardiac death after new technology tested on pigs restored some of the animals&#8217; heart and brain cells an hour after dying.
<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-02112-0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nature</a>, a scientific journal, reported Wednesday that a team of scientists revived some circulation and cellular activity in the pigs&#8217; vital organs by using a life-support type of system the group developed called OrganEx, which streams a mixture of pig blood and 13 compounds into a pig&#8217;s cardiovascular system and oxygenizes its tissue. 
The experimental system evolved from technology developed in 2019 that delivered artificial blood to a pig&#8217;s brain called BrainEx.
&#8220;We made cells do something they weren&#8217;t able to do,&#8221; Zvonimir Vrselja, a neuroscientist and team member at Yale University, told the scientific journal. &#8220;We&#8217;re not saying it&#8217;s clinically relevant, but it&#8217;s moving in the right direction.&#8221;
While scientists kept the animals heavily sedated and hooked up to ventilators before and after dying from a cardiac arrest, they observed that the livers and kidneys of the pigs showed some functionality. The study also noted electrical activity and contractions in heart cells occurred.
&#8220;All cells do not die immediately,&#8221; David Andrijevic, an associate research scientist in neuroscience at Yale School of Medicine and co-lead author of the study, told the <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://news.yale.edu/2022/08/03/yale-developed-technology-restores-cell-organ-function-pigs-after-death" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university</a>. &#8220;There is a more protracted series of events.&#8221;
&#8220;It is a process in which you can intervene, stop, and restore some cellular function,&#8221; Andrijevic added.
During the six-hour experiment, the dead pigs began moving their head, neck, and torso involuntarily — which surprised researchers, who said the spinal cords may have controlled those motor functions.
&#8220;We can say that animals were not conscious during these moments, and we don&#8217;t have enough information to speculate why they moved,&#8221; said Dr. Nenad Sestan, a professor of neuroscience at the Yale School of Medicine and an author of the new research, according to <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/scientists-reanimate-dead-cells-pigs-potential-breakthrough-organ-tran-rcna41014" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a>. 
Some of the brain tissue was preserved during the process. However, it did not show any coordinated activity, which could have indicated the animal regaining &#8220;consciousness or sentience.&#8221; 
&#8220;If you can regain some function in a dead pig brain, you can do it in other organs, too,&#8221; Sestan said.
Researchers said it was difficult to tell the difference under a microscope between healthy organs and those treated using OrganEx.
Although the researchers have only just begun the experimental phase, the cellular restoration could potentially be replicated in humans, extending the lives of people who suffer from a stroke or a heart attack. The technology may even expand organ transplant availability.
&#8220;There are numerous potential applications of this exciting new technology,&#8221; Stephen Latham, director of the Yale Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics, told the <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://news.yale.edu/2022/08/03/yale-developed-technology-restores-cell-organ-function-pigs-after-death" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university</a>. &#8220;However, we need to maintain careful oversight of all future studies, particularly any that include perfusion of the brain.&#8221;
Brendan Parent, an assistant professor of bioethics at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, told <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/scientists-reanimate-dead-cells-pigs-potential-breakthrough-organ-tran-rcna41014" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a> his eyes &#8220;went wide&#8221; after reading about the new research. 
&#8220;My brain went to all the crazy places we could go in 20 or 30 years,&#8221; Parent said.  
The study further emphasized ethical challenges tied to using the technology and what it could mean to declare a person dead.
Arthur Caplan, a bioethicist at New York University, told Nature that as medicine evolves, the definitions of death may adapt.
&#8220;People tend to focus on brain death, but there&#8217;s not much consensus on when cardiac death occurs,&#8221; Caplan said. &#8220;This paper brings that home in an important way.&#8221;

&#8220;It was a cardiac event,&#8221; UW-Whitewater Men&#8217;s Basketball Coach Pat Miller <a href="https://www.wkow.com/news/coach-whitewater-basketball-players-sudden-death-cardiac-related/article_95bbf726-0e07-11ed-a5de-233e74827dab.html">told</a> local media. &#8220;He had a blockage.&#8221;

“He was a great kid,” Miller said following Gray&#8217;s passing. &#8220;He was very intelligent. He and I had long talks about basketball, life and family. He was a very engaging, sincere person. He was loved by his teammates. He had an ability to connect with people. And he showed up and played hard — to do what he could for the team. There are not enough good things I can say about him. The shock of this is beyond words.”
Miller said that when Gray collapsed, he initially believed the player was experiencing a seizure.
&#8220;It was just a very surreal situation where you&#8217;re thinking, &#8216;Okay, he&#8217;s going to be all right,&#8217; and then you&#8217;re very scared and the longer it went on, it became apparent that this was extraordinarily serious,&#8221; Miller said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been around for a long time, I&#8217;ve seen a lot of different things. It was one of the most traumatic things I&#8217;ve ever been a part of.&#8221;
Gray&#8217;s high school, Madison&#8217;s La Follette High School, put out a statement remembering his time as a student athlete at the school.
&#8220;On behalf of Principal Mat [Thompson] and all [La Follette] High School Staff, it is with a profound sense of sadness that the La Follette community mourns the unexpected loss of former Lancer, Derek Gray,&#8221; Assistant Principal Cullen Haskins wrote in a statement. &#8220;Derek was a giant of La Follette basketball and Lancer athletics, and was at his best in the toughest games and most challenging moments. He was a true ‘gamer.’ His toughness and tenacity on the court will always be remembered, and his kindness and smile off the court forever missed.”
“As a well known student-athlete and basketball standout, his presence and impact on the La Follette community was far-reaching,” the statement continued. “His life, both on and off the court, had an enormous impact on all those who knew him. As we process this tremendous loss for our community, we ask you to join us in keeping Derek’s friends, teammates, and family in our thoughts.&#8221;
