Editor’s note: This week, we’re reprinting some of our best stories from the past year. This piece, originally published in September, discusses the dangerous drug sold at gas stations across the country derived from kratom.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary says his agency is working to get ahead of what could be the “fourth wave” of the deadly opioid crisis by targeting a substance derived from the kratom plant that is being sold to young people in gas stations and vape shops all across the nation.
The concentrated compound, 7-hydroxymitragynine, known as 7-OH, is up to 13 times more potent than morphine, according to Makary. Deceptive marketing and easy access are helping fuel its spread, luring in an increasing number of young Americans.
“We can’t get caught flat-footed again,” Makary recently <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-9RKbVl_m8">warned</a>. “We got burned with fentanyl, we got burned with prescription drugs. We cannot get behind the eight ball again. This may be the fourth wave of the opioid epidemic. Concentrated, synthetic, 7-OH may be the fourth wave of the opioid epidemic.”
“7-OH, people need to know, is an opioid,” he emphasized. “You can walk down the street in almost any neighborhood in America and buy an opioid.”
The kratom plant is native to Southeast Asia. In its natural state, some people find it to have healthful and medicinal qualities. The FDA has made clear that it’s not focusing on the natural kratom leaf. They’re targeting concentrated and synthetic forms of kratom, or 7-OH.
At the end of July, the FDA recommended that 7-OH be classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, making it illegal to sell or possess. The agency says it’s an opioid that comes with significant health risks, including addiction and overdose.
Some people may not have even heard of kratom before, but they’ve likely seen kratom-derived 7-OH products in gas stations, corner stores, vape shops, or even online. Kratom, overall, is a billion-dollar industry in the U.S. – and it’s growing fast. In just a few years, the industry is expected to almost double in size.
7-OH is sold in a variety of forms, including powders, vapes, drinks, pills, and products that appeal to children, such as <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-takes-steps-restrict-7-oh-opioid-products-threatening-american-consumers?utm_source=chatgpt.com">fruit-flavored gummies and even ice cream cones</a>.

These products are often inaccurately labeled concerning their 7-OH content, and can be disguised or marketed as merely the kratom plant. There’s also no federal age restriction on these products, though <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/kratom-targeted-crackdowns-states-cities-rcna166661">several states</a> now prohibit the sale of such products to minors.
As far as widespread harm, especially to young Americans, the data are mixed – or perhaps underreported, and too early to tell.
The CDC says there have been some overdose deaths associated with kratom products, but often other substances were also involved. There was also a <a href="https://project.tampabay.com/investigations/deadly-dose/kratom-overdose-deaths-florida-mitragynine-testing/">recent report</a> from the Tampa Bay Times that links kratom products to hundreds of deaths just in the state of Florida, over the past decade. Additionally, more and more anecdotal accounts of 7-OH-related addictions and deaths fill the web, though they remain unverified.
A toxicologist and emergency physician from Albany Medical Center, Dr. Alicia Tudor, believes kratom-related harms are being underreported, specifically regarding overdoses.
“I’ll see it in the emergency department and then probably more often in the addiction clinic that I work at as well,” Tudor <a href="https://cbs6albany.com/news/wellness-watch/ballston-spa-mother-advocates-for-kratom-regulation-after-sons-death-controlled-substance-legislation-bill-protest-overdose-toxicology">told</a> WRGB.
Toxicology tests are not always given when patients come in for an overdose, she said. “Then the results would come back, you know, weeks later, and at that point, the patient’s been discharged and doing better,” Tudor added.

New York mother Cari Scribner wants action taken on these highly concentrated kratom products. Her 27-year-old son, Nickolas, died last year from what appears to have been a kratom-related death.
Scribner <a href="https://cbs6albany.com/news/wellness-watch/ballston-spa-mother-advocates-for-kratom-regulation-after-sons-death-controlled-substance-legislation-bill-protest-overdose-toxicology">says</a> her son started using the products to manage anxiety, depression, and insomnia, believing it was merely an “all natural herbal, energy, and health supplement.”
In a similar tragedy, Makary relayed the contents of a letter from a grieving stepfather of a young man who had finally quit addiction, only to purchase 7-OH without being aware of its contents.
“He called me on May 31 to tell me he had stopped at the vape shop to buy a vape and was offered a fruity pill, and was told that it was kratom,” Makary read the letter aloud. “He said that he took the pill and became addicted, and should have done his research. He died the night he took two 20 mg 7-OH pills. The wrapper was at his bedside. There were no other drugs or alcohol in the house.”
While kratom has been widely used in the U.S. for some time, concentrated 7-OH has only risen in popularity within the last five years. Ultimately, the FDA is moving to stop the substance from causing more widespread harm before it’s too late.
And it’s not just the FDA taking action. Florida is leading the way on the state level. Earlier this month, Florida AG James Uthmeier announced an emergency rule to classify 7-OH as a Schedule I controlled substance. GOP Gov. Mike DeWine has also <a href="https://governor.ohio.gov/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-calls-on-pharmacy-board-to-schedule-+kratom-compounds-as-illegal-drugs">urged</a> the Ohio Board of Pharmacy to designate synthetic and natural kratom compounds as illegal drugs. Additionally, a number of other states have moved to add age restrictions for 7-OH or limitations on concentrations of the compound.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is currently reviewing the FDA’s recommendation to effectively ban 7-OH.

Former Nebraska Republican Senator Ben Sasse revealed on Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with metastasized, stage-four pancreatic cancer, adding that he is &#8220;gonna die.&#8221;
Sasse, a 53-year-old husband and father of three, <a href="https://x.com/BenSasse/status/2003483746540965891">announced</a> the tragic news in a lengthy social media post, saying that the diagnosis is a &#8220;death sentence.&#8221;
&#8220;Friends- This is a tough note to write, but since a bunch of you have started to suspect something, I’ll cut to the chase: Last week I was diagnosed with metastasized, stage-four pancreatic cancer, and am gonna die,&#8221; Sasse wrote. &#8220;Advanced pancreatic is nasty stuff; it’s a death sentence. But I already had a death sentence before last week too — we all do.&#8221;
Sasse, who represented Nebraska in the U.S. Senate for eight years, resigned from his seat in 2022 and, shortly after, was appointed the president of the University of Florida. He <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/former-gop-senator-ben-sasse-announces-he-is-stepping-down-as-university-of-florida-president">stepped down</a> from leading the University of Florida in July of 2024 after revealing that his wife was dealing with a serious medical condition and had suffered an aneurysm and a series of strokes. During his time as president of Florida, Sasse took a strong stance against anti-Israel protesters in the wake of Hamas&#8217; terrorist attack on Israel and said the university would &#8220;draw a hard line at unlawful action.&#8221;
Sasse was a staunch pro-life advocate in the U.S. Senate and constantly pushed the U.S. government to remain tough on China. He has also been a strong critic of President Donald Trump since Trump first stepped into the political spotlight in 2016.
The former Republican senator said on Tuesday, &#8220;I’ve got less time than I’d prefer. This is hard for someone wired to work and build, but harder still as a husband and a dad.&#8221; Sasse added that he is relying on his Christian faith to get him through his recent cancer diagnosis.

Former Senator Ben Sasse Reveals Stage-Four Cancer Diagnosis: ‘I’ve Got Less Time Than I’d Prefer’

A Stanford Medicine research team has confirmed that mRNA-based COVID vaccines can cause inflammation of the heart muscle, known as myocarditis, which can be fatal.
The study, recently <a href="https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2025/12/myocarditis-vaccine-covid.html">published</a> in the journal &#8220;Science Translational Medicine,&#8221; concludes that these mRNA vaccines can trigger certain immune cells to produce inflammatory proteins, specifically CXCL10 and IFN-gamma, which can cause heart issues.
“It’s not a heart attack in the traditional sense,” Dr. Joseph Wu, a senior author of the study and the director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, explained. “There’s no blockage of blood vessels as found in most common heart attacks. When symptoms are mild and the inflammation hasn’t caused structural damage to the heart, we just observe these patients to make sure they recover.”
Some patients, though, can suffer severe complications, including death, Wu said.
The researcher confirmed that COVID itself &#8220;can cause myocarditis,&#8221; and &#8220;to a lesser extent, so can the mRNA vaccines.&#8221;
For reasons still unknown, the vaccines are tied to a heightened risk in males under the age of 30, particularly those who receive multiple doses, the study found.
&#8220;Vaccine-associated myocarditis occurs in about one in every 140,000 vaccines after a first dose and rises to one in 32,000 after a second dose,&#8221; Stanford Medicine News Center <a href="https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2025/12/myocarditis-vaccine-covid.html">said</a>. &#8220;For reasons that aren’t clear, incidence peaks among male vaccines age 30 or below, at one in 16,750 vaccines.&#8221;
Recently, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) vaccine chief Dr. Vinay Prasad proposed in an internal memo an overhaul to how vaccines are evaluated and approved, basically initiating tougher standards.

This would reportedly include full randomized clinical trials even for updated or routine vaccines, like the flu shot. The changes would allow for an evaluation of real-world protection, not just antibody levels, as well as rates of side effects, and more information on risk-benefit analysis. 
Notably, the memo cited at least 10 children who died “after and because of” receiving COVID vaccines as the apparent driving force behind the tougher vaccine standards.
The medical establishment quickly revolted over the proposed standards. For example, twelve former FDA officials denounced the memo in an editorial, claiming it casts doubt on vaccine safety. They also said the new standards “reject long-standing science” and will slow innovation. 
In response to the backlash from the establishment, Health and Human Services (HHS) press secretary Emily Hilliard told The Daily Wire that the American people “deserve evidence-based science,” and said Dr. Prasad’s email “lays out a philosophical framework that points us toward that higher standard.”
Hilliard also said HHS will “soon release documents laying out that framework” as well as data confirming how the COVID-19 vaccine resulted in children’s deaths that &#8220;previous leadership failed to properly investigate.”
The FDA is also currently <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/12/09/vaccine-covid-coronavirus-safety-fda/">investigating</a> adult deaths connected to the COVID vaccines.

A famed doctor with tens of millions of followers on social media was recently schooled on the issues plaguing public health by a supporter of the &#8220;Make America Healthy Again&#8221; agenda.
Mikhail Varshavski, known online as Dr. Mike, argued on a recent episode of Jubilee&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y90R8BPc8Ag">Surrounded</a>&#8221; that Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. should step down from his position, citing cuts to bureaucracy within the department.
A supporter of the MAHA movement named Brian needed under two minutes to decimate Dr. Mike&#8217;s argument.
&#8220;So considering all of that &#8230; where did that get us?&#8221; the MAHA supporter asked Dr. Mike, responding to specific HHS cuts cited by the online personality.
Notably, Secretary Kennedy has defended cuts to HHS, citing absurd bureaucracy and overlapping offices that he contends are wasteful and not helping improve public health.
&#8220;Look at the state of America, of Americans&#8217; health, and you tell me that the public is actually healthy,&#8221; Brian dared Dr. Mike. &#8220;What RFK is doing is he is saying, &#8216;enough is enough, something has to change.&#8217; And I will say this very politely &#8212; I think that you have to be f***ing insane to say &#8216;more&#8217; is somehow going to get us out of the current public health crisis that we have right now.&#8221;
&#8220;Americans are fat and they are sick and it is not getting better, and taking more and more money and continuing to flush it down the toilet is not going to solve the problem,&#8221; he continued.
&#8220;We know what will stop cancer dead in its tracks. We know what will stop all chronic disease dead in its tracks. Do you know what it is?&#8221; Brian asked.
&#8220;Lifestyle changes,&#8221; Dr. Mike responded.
&#8220;Lifestyle changes,&#8221; the MAHA supporter agreed. &#8220;The American Heart Association has known about this for years, that the most important predictor of longevity, risk of chronic disease, all-cause mortality is <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1161/cir.0000000000000461">VO2 max</a>. So why aren&#8217;t doctors &#8212; why isn&#8217;t the government creating a public health system that says, &#8216;you know what, we&#8217;re gonna focus on VO2 max because even if we stopped every dollar we had [going] into cancer research right now, and we took that money and we said, let&#8217;s get people moving, let&#8217;s increase their VO2 max.'&#8221;
&#8220;The question is, when is enough enough to admit that the system you are a part of has drastically failed Americans?&#8221; Brian posed.
The supporter added that Secretary Kennedy, &#8220;by the very fact of how he looks in his 70s, does more to encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle and truly make America healthy again.&#8221;

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&#8217;s (CDC) vaccine panel recommended this week that the hepatitis B immunization should not be given to all babies immediately after birth. The decision was fully supported by President Donald Trump, who then took the issue one step further, signing a memorandum to &#8220;fast track&#8221; a full evaluation of the childhood vaccine schedule.
The decision from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP, marks a major shift, changing up standard practice in the United States for some 30 years.
In an 8-3 vote, the panel recommended the hepatitis B vaccine only be given at birth for infants whose mothers test positive for the virus, or whose status is unknown. If a mother has a negative hepatitis B status, she should speak to her doctor about getting the first dose of the vaccination at birth.
Traditionally, the vaccine is given in three separate doses. The ACIP panel decided that some children do not need a third dose, and recommended testing children&#8217;s antibody levels before determining if they need follow-up doses.

On Friday, Trump posted on Truth Social that the decision from ACIP is &#8220;very good&#8221; and criticized the general vaccine schedule for children.
&#8220;[T]he CDC Vaccine Committee made a very good decision to END their Hepatitis B Vaccine Recommendation for babies, the vast majority of whom are at NO RISK of Hepatitis B, a disease that is mostly transmitted sexually, or through dirty needles,&#8221; the president wrote.
&#8220;The American Childhood Vaccine Schedule long required 72 &#8216;jabs,&#8217; for perfectly healthy babies, far more than any other Country in the World, and far more than is necessary,&#8221; Trump continued. &#8220;In fact, it is ridiculous! Many parents and scientists have been questioning the efficacy of this &#8216;schedule,&#8217; as have I!&#8221;
Trump then announced that he signed a &#8220;Presidential Memorandum directing the Department of Health and Human Services to &#8216;FAST TRACK&#8217; a comprehensive evaluation of Vaccine Schedules from other Countries around the World, and better align the U.S. Vaccine Schedule, so it is finally rooted in the Gold Standard of Science and COMMON SENSE!&#8221;

In addition to other notable changes, Kennedy&#8217;s Health and Human Services department has so far modified COVID vaccine recommendations, advised that young babies get vaccinated against chickenpox separately, and opened the door to exploring a connection between vaccines and autism.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Advocates and angel families who lost children to the opioid epidemic applauded news Monday that President Donald Trump had signed the SUPPORT Act, legislation that strengthens resources for Americans facing substance use disorders.
Trump signed the legislation into law on Monday afternoon, reauthorizing and revising programs within the Department of Health and Human Services addressing substance use disorders, overdoses, and mental health.
Sandy Snodgrass, the mother of a victim named Bruce, and co-founder of Fentanyl Fathers and Angel Army, said simply: “The SUPPORT Act and Bruce’s Law will simply save the lives of young Americans.”
Another bereaved father, Greg Swan, thanked the president for listening to the story of his grieving family, noting that Trump created the original SUPPORT Act back in 2018. Monday&#8217;s action renewed the law with the addition of &#8220;Bruce&#8217;s Law,&#8221; written by Snodgrass, he said.
&#8220;Now we are empowered and backed by the Support Act to go into all 26,727 reluctant USA High Schools and preach the dangers of fentanyl as a bereaved army, the Angel Army,&#8221; said Swan, who is co-founder of Fentanyl Fathers and Angel Army. &#8220;110,000 lives will be saved by youth alone &#8211; and you can double that by the number of bereaved parents who WILL NOT have to have an empty chair for their &#8216;Tiny Tim.&#8217;”
Drew Siegel, co-founder of Victoria&#8217;s Voice, said that his organization is &#8220;forever grateful&#8221; to Trump and his administration for &#8220;answering the prayers of millions of bereaved parents, siblings, friends, and families across our country.&#8221; Drew&#8217;s sister, Victoria, is also a victim of a drug overdose.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt embarrassed the New York Times on Monday after it published a story questioning President Trump’s health and fitness for the job.
A reporter asked, “The White House today launched a fake news portal. What is your objective with that, ultimately, and are you going to name the news networks, and are you also going to name correspondents?”
“Yes, we are,” Leavitt answered. “I’m glad you noticed. Much to the dismay of some of your colleagues in the room, and I think it goes to our original promise on day one to hold the media accountable, because unfortunately, and we deal with this all day, every day around here, there are so many fake stories that are unfortunately written that have inaccurate characterizations of meetings that took place, and it&#8217;s all based on anonymous sourcing.”
“The standard for journalism unfortunately has dropped to such a historic low in this country, and again, we deal with it every day, where you can have an anonymous source who has no idea of what they’re talking about, zero credibility, call up a reporter in Washington and say, ‘Hey, I heard this,’ and the next thing you know, it&#8217;s on the front page of The New York Times,” she continued.

The White House released medical results for President Donald Trump on Monday that showed &#8220;perfectly normal&#8221; scans of the president&#8217;s heart and stomach.
Trump, who turned 79 in June, underwent MRIs as part of his physical exam in October, and promised reporters on Sunday that he would release the results after Minnesota Governor Tim Walz questioned the president&#8217;s health and called on him to make the MRI results public. During the Monday afternoon White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt read from a statement prepared by Trump&#8217;s doctor, Sean Barbabella.
&#8220;As part of President Donald J. Trump&#8217;s comprehensive executive physical, advanced imaging was performed because men in his age group benefit from a thorough evaluation of cardiovascular and abdominal health,&#8221; Barbabella wrote. &#8220;The purpose of this imaging is preventative: to identify issues early, confirm overall health, and ensure he maintains long-term vitality and function.&#8221;
Barbabella said that Trump&#8217;s cardiovascular and abdominal imaging were &#8220;perfectly normal,&#8221; adding that the president remains in &#8220;perfect health.&#8221;

Trump&#8217;s critics have questioned his health throughout his second term, pushing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/not-dead-at-all-trump-teases-exciting-announcement-from-oval-office">rumors</a> that he was dealing with major health issues, and some people even speculated that Trump had died in September. Trump&#8217;s health was brought into question again on Sunday by Walz.
Trump ripped Walz in a Thanksgiving Day message, calling the governor &#8220;seriously retarded&#8221; and arguing that “hundreds of thousands of refugees from Somalia are completely taking over” Minnesota. Walz said on Sunday that Trump is &#8220;fading physically,&#8221; adding that his behavior is &#8220;not normal&#8221; and &#8220;not healthy.&#8221;
Trump responded to Walz&#8217;s comments on Sunday and said that he had no issue releasing the MRI results.
&#8220;If you want to have it released, I’ll release it,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/12/01/us-news/trump-tells-reporters-hell-release-results-of-october-mri-if-you-want/">told</a> reporters. “It was just an MRI. What part of the body? It wasn’t the brain because I took a cognitive test and I aced it.&#8221;
The president, who is approaching his 80th birthday, has maintained an intense schedule throughout his second term and remains in &#8220;excellent&#8221; condition, according to his doctor. In July, however, Trump was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-reveals-medical-condition-causing-swelling-in-trumps-legs">diagnosed</a> with “chronic venous insufficiency” in his legs, which causes his legs to swell. Barbabella said Trump&#8217;s “chronic venous insufficiency” is a “benign, common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70.”

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that an extension to Obamacare subsidies &#8220;may be necessary,” but he would prefer a plan that made direct payments to American citizens instead.
The Affordable Care Act/Obamacare subsidies, set to expire at the end of the year, were the focus of Democrats&#8217; demands during the government shutdown. Some Republicans have pushed to let them expire, while others have argued they should be extended. The Senate is expected to vote on the future of the subsidies sometime in December. 
While en route to Florida on Tuesday night, Trump was asked if he would like to see the Obamacare subsidies extended. 
“I’d rather not. Somebody said I want to extend them for two years. I don’t want to extend them for two years,” Trump <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/2K8V3xqC9Gc">told</a> reporters on board Air Force One. “I’d rather not extend them at all. Some kind of an extension may be necessary to get something else done because the &#8216;Unaffordable Care Act&#8217; has been a disaster.” 
When asked what kind of health care policy he would like to see, Trump said it would involve the federal government giving people money to purchase their own plans.

“I like my plan the best. Don’t give any money to the insurance companies; give it to the people directly. Let them buy their own health care plan,” Trump said. “And we’re looking at that. If that can work. We’re looking at that. That’s sort of taking off. That’s what I like. Don&#8217;t give the money to the insurance companies.”
Trump said that skyrocketing health care premiums were “the Democrats’ fault,” but added that they were negotiating with him. 
&#8220;It’s very interesting,” he said. ”I can’t tell you who, but we have a lot of Democrats who want this plan to happen. They would love to see the money go to the people and the people go out and get their own health care.&#8221;
Trump&#8217;s comments came after POLITICO <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/11/24/trump-health-care-subsidies-backlash-00667751" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that he planned to introduce a plan that included a two-year extension of Obamacare subsidies. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/11/25/donald-trump-affordable-care-act-subsidies-tax-credit/87473037007/">said</a> on Tuesday that health care discussions were ongoing. 
&#8220;The president is having ongoing conversations with members of his administration, members of Congress, and private sector experts,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He will make recommendations for healthcare policy improvements in the near future.”
On November 18, Trump said on social media that the only plan he would support or approve would be one that sends “THE MONEY DIRECTLY BACK TO THE PEOPLE, WITH NOTHING GOING TO THE BIG, FAT, RICH INSURANCE COMPANIES, WHO HAVE MADE $TRILLIONS, AND RIPPED OFF AMERICA LONG ENOUGH.”

Though the government shutdown has ended, the fight over Obamacare is still raging.
Democrats want to extend and renew the Affordable Care Act&#8217;s expanded COVID-era subsidies, which are set to expire on December 31. Doing so would cost American taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade. Republicans want to let the subsidies lapse, and find a way to reform America&#8217;s healthcare system.
Ryan Long, Senior Research Fellow at the Paragon Health Institute, told The Daily Wire that the expanded subsidies have created zero-dollar insurance plans that have sparked widespread fraud and abuse.
&#8220;There&#8217;s upwards of 6 million people who aren&#8217;t actually within that income category that are claiming credits as if they were in that income category,” he explained. “In certain states, there are three to four times as many people enrolled in 100 to 150% of poverty in these $0 plans than there are people actually in those income brackets.”
“So these COVID credits have just produced massive amounts of fraud,” he said. “The federal government’s paying, you know, upwards of $27 billion to $30 billion in fraudulent payments.”
Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz echoed this concern last week. “Today, it’s over 11 million people who have Obamacare, never use their policies … which means they often don’t know that they have it,” he said. “Yet we’re stuck with the bill.”
Obamacare is also making health insurance more expensive. Obamacare plan premiums have climbed a whopping 169% since 2013. The increase is far steeper than that of employer-sponsored insurance, because when prices rise, the government is paying most of the cost, so insurers can keep raising them without people feeling the impact, Long explained.
“What we’ve seen is, since the [ACA] was established or implemented in 2014, employer-sponsored premiums have gone up about 68%. ACA premiums have gone up 129%,” he said. “So that can’t be a function of just prices going up. There’s something truly wrong here.”
Healthcare costs and wait times have not improved since the implementation of Obamacare, either. So, where is all this money going?
Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) told The Daily Wire in an interview this week that a lot of this money is going to insurance companies.
&#8220;The largest carrier of exchange policies is UnitedHealthcare,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Their stock price has gone up 1,177 % since the invitation of Obamacare. Of the top seven carriers, the smallest amount of stock increases — I think, 414%. A lot of money into the insurance companies, a lot of money into the hospitals. There&#8217;s no doubt about it that we&#8217;ve got rural hospitals that are in trouble, but the big city hospitals are making money hand over fists.&#8221;
&#8220;There is nothing about Obamacare that created incentives to save money,&#8221; he emphasized. &#8220;All the incentives are to increase the money spent on healthcare so everybody gets their cut, everybody gets to make their profit. Non-profit hospitals, take a look at the pay of CEOs — some of them are making over $30 million a year in total compensation.&#8221;
&#8220;Money is flowing into the medical establishment, they&#8217;re making money hand over fists; the tabs are being picked up by the American taxpayer,&#8221; the senator told The Daily Wire.
Democrats’ solution to the healthcare crisis is to continue to extend and expand subsidies.
“We had a provision that was ready to be signed, that we know would’ve decreased premiums by 10 to 15%,” Long said. “Senate Democrats objected to it — the same policy that they were saying we had to do back in 2018. And so I think that they’ve just said, ‘Hey, the horse is outta the barn, we’ll just, you know, paper over any mistakes with more subsidies.’”
Johnson said Democrats are insisting on extending the COVID-era subsidies &#8220;to paper over to hide the fact that Obamacare has just been a miserable failure.&#8221;
&#8220;It caused premiums to skyrocket, as opposed to &#8230; President Obama saying that he would reduce premiums by $2,500 a year by family — again, that&#8217;s a total lie,&#8221; he added.
Johnson also pushed back on Democrats&#8217; claims that premiums will double for millions and millions of Americans if the subsidies aren&#8217;t extended.
&#8220;Twenty-two million of the 24 million people will still get their subsidies, the original Obamacare subsidies, which subsidize the insurance at 91 % of the premiums,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;So their premiums won&#8217;t double.&#8221;
&#8220;Now, you can argue that people that went from paying a negligible amount to zero premiums, they&#8217;re going to have to pay another negligible amount,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;But again, going from zero to a negligible amount is an infinite increase. You can&#8217;t put that as &#8216;doubling premiums.'&#8221;
&#8220;The people we&#8217;re talking about, the 1.6 million people whose subsidies completely go away — I&#8217;m willing to work with Democrats on that,&#8221; the senator added. &#8220;But again, it&#8217;s simply false to say that most people are gonna see their premiums double and triple. Now, the gross premium has more than doubled and tripled since Obamacare, but that&#8217;s because of Obamacare.&#8221;
The GOP believes that deep reforms need to be made — or Obamacare needs to be scrapped entirely.

Republicans seem to be on board with the proposal. In fact, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) said last weekend that he’s drafting legislation to put this idea into action.
Long said this could be a good move for Americans. If Congress were to adequately fund Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSR) — which are supposed to help people pay for things like deductibles and copays — that could drastically lower premiums and cut tens of billions of dollars in taxpayer funding, he explained. And, as Trump proposed, sending that money straight to Americans rather than insurance companies would only empower patients.
“One thing that we&#8217;ve advocated for is if you appropriate those CSR subsidies, which is one of the twin pillars of the subsidy structure from the ACA, you&#8217;ll reduce premiums by 10 to 15%,” he explained. “Two, you&#8217;ll lower federal spending by about $30 billion. You&#8217;ll give patients more power and choice. And we think with that power and choice, you&#8217;ll also have the effect of them being better shoppers, and that will lead to more competition and choice.”
“So one thing that you could do is appropriate those CSR subsidies, and instead of giving those CSRs straight to the insurance company, you can give those to people in an HSA, where they can have more power to shop around for more valued services or better-priced services,” he elaborated. “Again, you’ll have the twin effects of lowering premiums, lowering federal spending, and empowering patients, which we think is sort of a triple winner.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its website to suggest that autism could be caused by infant vaccinations &#8212; a major agency shift from past administrations.
&#8220;The claim &#8216;vaccines do not cause autism&#8217; is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism,&#8221; the site now reads.
The CDC also now says that studies &#8220;supporting a link have been ignored by health authorities,&#8221; and Health and Human Services (HHS) &#8220;has launched a comprehensive assessment of the causes of autism, including investigations on plausible biologic mechanisms and potential causal links.&#8221;
The site was updated on Wednesday.

Before HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was sworn into office, the CDC firmly stated that autism does not have any links to vaccination. The CDC website, for example, previously said, &#8220;Studies have shown that there is no link between receiving vaccines and developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD).”

The CDC also previously stated that &#8220;no links have been found between any vaccine ingredients&#8221; and autism.
The current site stresses the HHS investigation into autism causes and notes that many parents believe their child&#8217;s autism was in some way related to vaccination (emphasis added):

As part of his investigation into the massive spike in autism cases, Kennedy <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/potential-cause-treatment-of-autism-revealed-by-trump-rfk-jr">announced</a> back in September that acetaminophen use during pregnancy is tied to an increased risk of autism. Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol, one of the most widely used medications globally for pain relief and fever reduction. But in late October, Kennedy <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/us-health-chief-says-not-enough-data-show-tylenol-causes-autism-still-advises-2025-10-29/">said</a> he did not have sufficient evidence to back up a definitive link.
&#8220;The causative association between Tylenol given in pregnancy and perinatal periods is not sufficient to say it definitely causes autism, but it is very suggestive,&#8221; he <a href="https://x.com/atrupar/status/1983591905385390220">said</a>.
At the time, FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary told <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/potential-cause-treatment-of-autism-revealed-by-trump-rfk-jr">The Daily Wire</a> he had already sent out a “Dear doctor” letter to all U.S. physicians about the association.
“We have an epidemic of autism that has increased 400% in the recent decades and we don’t have a known cause,” he said. “Now this may be a cause, but when you have enough evidence to suggest an association and you have no other plausible cause, we have a duty to notify parents and doctors.”

The first known fatality from a red meat allergy intolerance spread by ticks has been recorded.
The otherwise healthy 47-year-old New Jersey man died abruptly after consuming beef at a restaurant in the summer of 2024. He had been camping with his family two weeks prior, per <a href="https://newsroom.uvahealth.com/2025/11/13/1st-death-linked-to-meat-allergy-spread-by-ticks/">UVA Health</a>. 
The man&#8217;s son found him unconscious on the floor of a bathroom surrounded by vomit, and the man was declared dead at a hospital. The autopsy declared it was a &#8220;sudden unexplained death,&#8221; but his wife pushed for answers, and eventually it was discovered that his death could be traced back to a tick bite.
Former Chief of UVA Health’s Division of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology Thomas Platts-Mills determined via blood samples taken post-mortem that the man had been sensitized to alpha-gal, a sugar found in mammalian meat, the outlet noted. Alpha-gal syndrome is caused by a bite from the Lone Star tick, which causes people to have an anaphylaxis reaction. Symptoms include a rash, nausea, and vomiting after consuming meat.
The same man had become ill after a steak dinner two weeks prior and had told his son he felt like he was dying. 
“The important information for the public is: First, that severe abdominal pain occurring 3 to 5 hours after eating beef, pork or lamb should be investigated as a possible episode of anaphylaxis; and, second, that tick bites that itch for more than a week or larvae of ticks often called ‘chiggers’ can induce or increase sensitization to mammalian-derived meat,” Platts-Mills said. “On the other hand, most individuals who have mild to moderate episodes of hives can control symptoms with an appropriate diet.”
While most individuals who develop alpha-gal sensitivities don’t have such an extreme allergic reaction, it is a possibility that severe illness or death can occur. Platts-Mills also warned doctors to be on the lookout for these types of responses in their patients.
“It is important that both doctors and patients who live in an area of the country where Lone Star ticks are common should be aware of the risk of sensitization,” Platts-Mills said. “More specifically, if they have unexpected episodes of severe abdominal pain occurring several hours after eating mammalian meat, they should be investigated for possible sensitization to the oligosaccharide alpha-gal.”
Lone Star ticks are common throughout the South, Southeast, and much of the eastern and midwestern United States, and their range has been expanding northward and westward in recent years.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/72/wr/mm7230a2.htm?s_cid=mm7230a2_w">said</a> more than 110,000 suspected cases were identified between 2010 and 2022, but the actual number is likely higher, as people aren’t likely to test for it. The CDC also found in 2023 that 42% of health providers had never heard of Alpha-gal syndrome.
