Actor Bradley Whitford, known in part for his role in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” has issued a public plea for Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to speak out against President Donald Trump.
The 65-year-old actor spoke with <a href="https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/bradley-whitford-jeff-beszos-trump-handmaids-tale-1236361358/">Variety</a> about his turmoil, including his opinion that the United States is turning into the fictional world of Gilead under the Trump administration. “It’s interesting,” he told the outlet in an interview published Tuesday. “Especially when you look at all the people who I’ve worked for over the years lined up at the Trump inauguration, staying silent while their daughters’ rights are being torn away.”
“The Handmaid’s Tale,” based on the Margaret Atwood book of the same title, is a dystopian drama set in the totalitarian society of Gilead, where women lose their rights and are forced into being used for reproductive purposes. The story follows June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) as she leads the women fighting for freedom.
“You know, misogyny is at the reptilian brain stem of these right-wing Christian white nationalists. It’s punitive. And, man, I’m pissed at all the people I work for. Like, ‘F***ING. SPEAK. UP,’” he added.
“I mean, if you run Disney, which I guess I work for now, I’ve sat through, ‘We really care for you and want to make sure you have access to health care.’ Speak the f*** up!” Whitford yelled during the interview, the outlet noted. “And Jeff Bezos, f***ing speak up!”
He went on to reference a drama he worked on for Amazon about a trans-identifying man who begins dressing like a woman.
“I don’t want to be a punk attacking, but I would really like to ask Jeff Bezos — who, when I worked on ‘Transparent,’ was talking about the importance of supporting this vulnerable community who has been turned into a political football — ‘What the hell is happening here?!’”
“A year ago, there were 65,000 pregnant rape victims without access to abortion care,” Whitford claimed. “Now it’s way up from that. This is not a drill. It’s not a story. This is happening. Margaret Atwood said that she almost scrapped the book a couple of times because it seemed too far-fetched. Turns out Margaret Atwood’s an optimist.”
Later in the interview, the actor again expressed disdain at the current administration. “We feel this despair because we feel we have no agency over what’s happening to us in this country. And June is a reminder that your agency will not be given to you: You need to fight for it. It’s part of what’s so wonderful about that character — she’s prodding people to embrace the power that they have.”
“I don’t care how political I sound,” Whitford continued. “I wish f***ing Jeff Bezos would sound a little f***king political. Speak the f*** up.”
There were several negative reactions to the actor’s statements on X. 
“Shut up. The election proved no one cares what celebrities have to say about politics,” one person <a href="https://x.com/GaysForTrump24/status/1909630757867339981">replied</a>. 
“Zero peoples’s daughters’ rights are being torn away,” another <a href="https://x.com/LatterDayDom/status/1909655040631226391">agreed</a>. “Unless you count the people whose daughters are being excluded from female sports because they’ve let cross-dressing men take their place. But I have a hunch he’s not concerned about that issue.”
&#8220;The only reason people like Whitford talk about abortion is because they believe abortion is the only right women should be allowed,&#8221; another person noted. &#8220;Women should have no other sex-based standing in sport, law, policy, medicine, or language because it might make a dude in a dress sad.&#8221;

One of the executive producers of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a dystopian drama based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood, referenced how the show is perceived in the current political climate.
Many liberal women have been drawing comparisons between the fictional republic of Gilead in the story and the current United States. Several stars of the Hulu series joined executive producers Eric Tuchman, Yahlin Chang, Bruce Miller, and Warren Littlefield at PaleyFest LA earlier this week to promote the show’s sixth and final season. 
“It’s been a show that we started the way we wanted to start it; we’re ending it the way we want to end it,” Miller said, per <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/handmaids-tale-final-season-political-climate-1236173861/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>. 
Littlefield discussed how their focus for the series shifted after Trump was elected the first time. “And then along came our 45th president and we entered into a whole other world,” the executive producer said. “We became a symbol of the resistance and a fight for human rights.”
Co-showrunner Chang said, “We really felt like we wanted this [final] season to be a love letter to our fans. You guys have really stuck with us through thick and thin — we all know that it’s not the easiest watch, this show,” adding that there are “some really feel-bad episodes.” 
“I was like, I only want to feel-good episodes. I only want to like, end with victory and feelings of hope and triumph and uplift… this season we wanted to feel rewarding,” Chang said.
“It is very weird that this show started shooting in 2016; here we are, unthinkable things have happened and we’re bewildered right now,” said actor Bradley Whitford, who plays Commander Joseph Lawrence in the series. 
“We need to meet this moment, and [Elisabeth Moss’ character] June is an example of the most fundamental thing we have to remember in this moment, which is that despair’s a luxury that our children cannot afford,” he continued. “Racism is not going to go away, misogyny is not going to go away, religious hypocrisy is not going to go away.”
Littlefield said, “In a world that we want to just kind of walk away because it’s so very painful, don’t give up the fight. Our women are not Marvel characters, they’re ordinary women who are doing extraordinary things. And so our message is actually the war is not over, but the fight continues. That gives us hope and that’s what we’re trying to put forth. That is our legacy.”

Cohost Sara Haines objected to Republican claims that Democrats were &#8220;soft on crime&#8221; — but she also said that she felt like Democrats were at the very least downplaying the fact that crime was on the rise and there were a lot of people who felt less safe just taking part in normal activities.
&#8220;What people say matters to them. You can&#8217;t tell them — and dismiss it as invisible,&#8221; Haines explained. &#8220;If they say there&#8217;s crime, it even doesn&#8217;t matter what the statistics are. If they feel unsafe, you have to answer that.&#8221;
Hostin — who has often claimed that because she is Catholic, she is pro-life — responded by saying she was really concerned by the number of white women who were planning to vote for the party that was placing more restrictions on abortion.
&#8220;What&#8217;s also surprising to me is the abortion issue,&#8221; Hostin began, citing a recent poll that indicated &#8220;white Republican suburban women&#8221; planned to vote Republican in Tuesday&#8217;s election — and added, &#8220;It&#8217;s almost like roaches voting for Raid.&#8221;
&#8220;That&#8217;s insulting to the voter,&#8221; Republican cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin interrupted.
&#8220;They&#8217;re voting against their own self-interest!&#8221; Hostin insisted, asking dramatically, &#8220;Do they want to live in Gilead? Do they want to be in &#8216;The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale&#8217;?&#8221;
&#8220;Do we love democracy or not, because just saying that it&#8217;s insulting to the voter,&#8221; Griffin said again, adding, &#8220;People make decisions based on what&#8217;s right for their family, and the idea that you should have a say for everyone else&#8217;s vote —&#8221;
&#8220;The fact that women are voting against their own health care —&#8221; Hostin pushed back.
Griffin pointed out the fact that Hostin had changed her own opinion on abortion in recent years, &#8220;evolving&#8221; to believe that abortion was wrong for her, but that she didn&#8217;t have the right to tell anyone else that it was wrong.
&#8220;Why is another woman not able to have a different view?&#8221; Griffin challenged.
&#8220;But I am very surprised that white Republican suburban women are voting against their own health care,&#8221; Hostin said again.
Haines, who has often argued in favor of abortion rights, said that women&#8217;s health issues were taking a back seat for her in Tuesday&#8217;s election because — at least for the time being — she was more worried about &#8220;election deniers&#8221; than restrictions on abortion.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/elisabeth-moss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elisabeth Moss</a> is making the same tired comparison between the current state of society and her Hulu series, “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/handmaids-tale" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Handmaid’s Tale</a>.”
The actress, who is a Scientologist, said it was “depressing” to think about <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/abortion" target="_blank" rel="noopener">women’s rights</a> in 2022. “Yeah, it is, no other way to say it,” she told <a href="https://pagesix.com/2022/10/11/elisabeth-moss-compares-todays-world-to-handmaids-tale/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Page Six</a> at PaleyFest NY. “I think there are a lot of things that are happening [now] that are depressing, but I do think it’s a very important year.”
Moss went on, saying people should vote to have their voices heard. “People should get out there and vote and express their opinions. Now is the time,” she continued.
The 1985 dystopian fantasy novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood was developed into a popular TV series. Now feminist activists sometimes dress up like the “handmaid” characters with red cloaks and white bonnets while publicizing leftist agendas, such as abortion rights. 
The series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States following a civil war. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women, or “handmaids,” as property of the state. 
“The whole idea behind the show is that people tend to walk around thinking that this could not happen here,” Moss told Page Six. “The whole foundation of the show is blowing holes in the idea that this could not happen here and we explore that even more in Season 5.”
“Hopefully, it will make people look at their values,” she continued. 
When the Supreme Court draft opinion leaked prior to Roe v. Wade being overturned, Moss said all the “Handmaid’s Tale” cast had a difficult time being at work.
“It was a bit somber on set when we first started [after the leak], but you have to sort of get to work and do the day,” Moss said at the time, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-handmaids-tale-star-bemoans-scotus-leak-says-she-wishes-dystopian-show-would-stop-being-so-damn-relevant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. 
“It’s always a weird thing for us. It’s not a pleasant thing. It’s not something that gets us excited, when there are these parallels and when your character is used as an example of something that’s happening in real life. It’s not anything we take any pleasure in at all.”
“It does make us happy and proud that we are doing a show that we feel is relevant, that we’re doing a show that we feel says things that need to be said,” she went on. “I wish it would stop being so damn relevant, though. I’ll tell you that much.”

Sydney Sweeney of “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/handmaids-tale">The Handmaid’s Tale</a>” fame made some candid comments about how <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hollywood">Hollywood</a> treats young women who want to start families. 
&#8220;I want to have a family, I&#8217;ve always wanted to be a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/motherhood">young mom</a>,&#8221; the 24-year-old actress told The Hollywood Reporter during a recent <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/sydney-sweeney-fame-emmys-euphoria-the-white-lotus-1235186681/">interview</a>. &#8220;And I&#8217;m worried about how this industry puts stigmas on young women who have children and looks at them in a different light.&#8221;
&#8220;I was worried that, if I don&#8217;t work, there is no money and no support for kids I would have,&#8221; Sweeney continued. 
She admitted to discussing how to balance her career and family life with her “Sharp Objects” co-star Amy Adams, who has one daughter. But Sweeney said financial struggles make her feel nervous about starting a family.
“If I wanted to take a six-month break, I don&#8217;t have income to cover that,&#8221; she told THR. &#8220;I don&#8217;t have someone supporting me, I don&#8217;t have anyone I can turn to, to pay my bills or call for help.&#8221;
&#8220;They don&#8217;t pay actors like they used to, and with streamers, you no longer get residuals,” she continued. “The established stars still get paid, but I have to give 5 percent to my lawyer, 10 percent to my agents, 3 percent or something like that to my business manager. I have to pay my publicist every month, and that&#8217;s more than my mortgage.&#8221;
The “Euphoria” star said she’d been forced to find alternate ways to earn an income beyond just acting. 
“If I just acted, I wouldn&#8217;t be able to afford my life in L.A. I take deals because I have to,&#8221; Sweeney explained.
Despite Sweeney’s worries about her income, it seems her star has been rising lately. The up-and-coming actress was recently nominated for two Emmy Awards for her work on “The White Lotus” and “Euphoria.” 
&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t really expecting this,&#8221; she told <a href="https://people.com/tv/sydney-sweeney-reacts-to-first-time-emmy-nominations-euphoria-white-lotus/">People</a> upon finding out she was in the running for those awards. &#8220;When I fell in love with acting, and when I fall in love with my characters, I don&#8217;t really think about the whole award aspect of it. I think there are so many incredible actors that I was rooting for, so I wasn&#8217;t ready.&#8221;
Sweeney is currently engaged to 37-year-old Chicago-based businessman Jonathan Davino. The pair have been linked since 2018 but mostly keep their relationship under wraps.

An activist dressed in a costume inspired by Margaret Atwood&#8217;s &#8220;The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale” and protesting outside the home of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/justice-barrett-mom-5-doesnt-know-full-term-pregnancy-handmaid-protester">insisted</a> that Barrett had no idea of what it was like to give birth.
Barrett has five biological children and has adopted two more children.
Accompanied by six other women dressed in “Handmaid’s Tale” outfits as they circled the cul-de-sac around Barrett’s home, the woman preached to a reporter, “She’s Catholic. Catholic is letting their religious doctrine interfere with their ability to write sound legal doctrine. It&#8217;s also possible that the fact that she is an adoptive mother is influencing her inability to see what it&#8217;s like to carry a pregnancy to term.”
“Well, she’s had five kids by herself,” the reporter pointed out.
Cornered, the activist switched gears: “Not everybody wants to have five kids or four kids or one kid.&#8221;
“Not all Catholics are anti-choice,” the activist pronounced, ignoring the distinction between Catholics who observe traditional Catholic doctrine and those who don’t. “So it would make no sense to protest an entire religion.”
“Again, nobody should be ashamed of their religion, nobody should not be Catholic,” she patronized.
Another woman carrying a sign reading &#8220;Keep your rosaries off my ovaries” chimed in, “We have no issue with Catholicism. However in this country, there’s a separation of church and state. So somebody’s religion, no matter what that might be, cannot dictate how they carry out their job as a public official.”

Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Samuel Alito have also had protests outside of their homes. One of Barrett’s neighbors told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/justice-barrett-mom-5-doesnt-know-full-term-pregnancy-handmaid-protester">Fox News</a> that the Barretts were &#8220;scared, and they wanted prayers,” adding, &#8220;The whole neighborhood&#8217;s been supportive of that.”
Daniel L. Dreisbach, the author of &#8220;Thomas Jefferson and the Wall of Separation Between Church and State,&#8221; has explained in a <a href="https://www.heritage.org/political-process/report/the-mythical-wall-separation-how-misused-metaphor-changed-church-state-law">comprehensive essay</a> that the famed “wall of separation” between church and state cited in the 1947 case Everson v. Board of Education was a stretch from the original intent of President Thomas Jefferson’s use of the phrase in his 1802 letter to the Baptist Association of Danbury, Connecticut.
“Throughout his public career, including two terms as President, Jefferson pursued policies incompatible with the ‘high and impregnable’ wall the modern Supreme Court has erroneously attributed to him,” Dreisbach noted. “For example, he endorsed the use of federal funds to build churches and to support Christian missionaries working among the Indians.”
“Jefferson&#8217;s wall, as a matter of federalism, was erected between the national and state governments on matters pertaining to religion and not, more generally, between the church and all civil government,” Dreisbach continued. “In other words, Jefferson placed the federal government on one side of his wall and state governments and churches on the other.”
“The differences between the two walls are suggested by Jefferson&#8217;s record as a public official in both Virginia and the nation, which shows that he initiated practices and implemented policies inconsistent with Justice Black&#8217;s and the modern Supreme Court&#8217;s ‘high and impregnable’ wall of separation,” Dreisbach stated.
Pointing out that Jefferson’s use of the phrase was metaphorical, Dreisbach concluded, “The wall is politically divisive. Because it is so concrete and unyielding, its very invocation forecloses meaningful dialogue regarding the prudential and constitutional role of religion, faith communities, and religious citizens in public life.”

Pro-abortion protesters who showed up to demonstrate at mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles were promptly ushered out of the church by attendees, video footage shows.
The Los Angeles Police Department told The Daily Wire on Monday afternoon that though police officers responded to disturbances at the cathedral on Sunday, they are not seeking the the pro-abortion protesters for violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act since the cathedral did not attempt to pursue any charges.
&#8220;By the time we responded, the protesters had left the location,&#8221; a spokeswoman said. &#8220;Officers remained at the location for any further protests.&#8221;
The FACE Act <a href="https://www.justice.gov/crt/offenses-against-reproductive-health-care-providers">prohibits</a> “violent, threatening, damaging and obstructive conduct intended to injure, intimidate, or interfere with the right” to obtain abortions.
It also bans the use of force, physical obstruction, injury, or intimidation to “injure, intimidate or interfere with any person lawfully exercising or seeking to exercise the First Amendment right of religious freedom at a place of religious worship.”
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles said in a statement to The Daily Wire that &#8220;the incident was handled accordingly by Cathedral Security ensuring limited disruption of Mass,&#8221; noting that &#8220;demonstrations had been anticipated across the country.&#8221;
&#8220;We continue to join our prayers as an Archdiocese in solidarity with the US Catholic Bishops to pray for change in our laws to help all women in need in our communities,&#8221; the archdiocese statement said.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/leftist-groups-direct-protestors-to-descend-upon-supreme-court-justices-homes">Leftist organizations</a> had called for abortion supporters to demonstrate at the homes of conservative Supreme Court justices. One of these groups, Ruth Sent Us, also called for protesters to “stand at or in a local Catholic Church” on Sunday, Mother’s Day.
“It’s despicable, anti-Catholic bigotry,” Roger Severino, the former director of the Office of Civil Rights at the United States Department of Health and Human Services, said last week, “because the church stands in defense of innocent human life. It doesn’t get any more offensive than that, to try to interfere with somebody’s First Amendment freedoms in the name of supporting abortion on demand.”
The Daily Wire observed police guarding multiple parishes in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill after the parishes alerted parishioners to be on the lookout for disturbances. Pro-abortion protesters do not appear to have disrupted any D.C. masses.

Beloved feminist author Margaret Atwood, famous for writing “The Handmaid’s Tale,” was blasted online for daring to tweet out an article from someone questioning the use of gender-neutral language. The <a href="https://www.thestar.com/opinion/star-columnists/2021/10/15/why-cant-we-say-woman-anymore.html">article</a>, called “Why can’t we say ‘woman’ anymore?” and written by Rosie DiManno, begins by replacing some well-known lyrics about women with some of the various, dehumanizing replacements used by the excessively woke:

The opinion piece argues that inclusion is a worthy goal, but erasing women in the process causes harm.
Atwood simply tweeted out the article, without adding her own comment. This led to a backlash from fans online, The Daily Beast <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/handmaids-tale-author-margaret-atwood-slammed-over-gender-tweet">reported</a>, including mocking comments: “Oh no you’re right I just tried to say it and a bunch of non-binary people stormed into my apartment and made me throw out my dresses.”
Atwood tweeted the article on Tuesday and spent time that day responding to those angry at her for sharing it, mostly telling them to actually read the piece before responding. She also at one point said DiManno is “not a terf,” a term that means “trans-exclusionary radical feminist” and has been used to dismiss feminist opinions about transgender issues that don’t align with current woke orthodoxy.
As The Daily Wire has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/feminists-turn-icon-margaret-atwood-after-she-emily-zanotti">reported</a>, this is not the first time feminists have turned against Atwood for not standing in lock-step with them. In January 2018, Atwood suggested the burgeoning #MeToo movement accept due process, which supporters of the movement decried as anathema to justice. From The Daily Wire:
<blockquote>Earlier this week, Atwood <a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/am-i-a-bad-feminist/article37591823/">penned an introspective article in the Globe and Mail</a> titled, “Am I a Bad Feminist?” praising the “#MeToo movement for taking down longtime alleged sexual aggressors like Harvey Weinstein, and calling the movement “a massive wake up call” for powerful men who saw themselves as untouchable.
But Atwood went on to criticize #MeToo, claiming that vigilante justice — making claims about harassment and then demanding men be punished without trial, destroying careers and ending families — violated the accepted civilizational norm of affording due process, and turned radical feminists into tyrants.
“If the legal system is bypassed because it is seen as ineffectual, what will take its place? Who will be the new power brokers?” Atwood wrote, likening her support for her colleague as he faced allegations of sexual harassment to standing by the accused during the Salem Witch Trials.
“The public — including me — was left with the impression that this man was a violent serial rapist, and everyone was free to attack him publicly, since under the agreement he had signed, he couldn’t say anything to defend himself,” she added. “A fair-minded person would now withhold judgment as to guilt until the report and the evidence are available for us to see.”</blockquote>
Atwood was accused of “warring against women” for suggesting mobs don’t get to accuse and judge someone without evidence or a chance to defend themselves.

‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Author Under Fire For Tweeting Article That Asked Why We Can’t Say ‘Woman’ Anymore

Hulu’s flagship series “The Handmaid’s Tale” may delight liberal audiences who believe the show represents the reality of what people on the Right want, but its latest season failed to inspire judges at the Creative Arts and Primetime Emmys ceremonies.
Variety <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/awards/handmaids-tale-most-emmy-losses-record-1235068326/">reported</a> that the show received 21 nominations between the two ceremonies but didn’t win a single award. The show has now set the record for most losses in a single year, breaking the record previously set by “Mad Men” in 2012, which lost 17 nominations that year.

<blockquote>Only three shows earned more nominations than Hulu’s flagship series, with Netflix’s “The Crown” and Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” receiving 24 noms each and “WandaVision” picking up 23. Also, like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” landed 21 noms, but managed to pick up a handful of trophies between the ceremonies.
Other empty-handers in Emmy history include “Northern Exposure” and “The Larry Sanders Show,” which went zero for 16 in their respective years.</blockquote>
In the past, “The Handmaid’s Tale” delivered at the Emmys, winning the award for best drama series in 2017. It was the first streaming program to win the award. In total, the show has won 15 Emmys over the course of its four seasons. A fifth season is in the works.
Despite the awards show loss, the show maintains a strong viewership. Jordan Helman, head of scripted content for Hulu Originals, <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/handmaids-tale-pen15-renewals-hulu-viewership-1235036385/">told</a> Variety that the show “year after year after year, sees viewership growth, unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”
The show is beloved by leftists who use it as a talking point against pro-life legislation and who dress up as handmaids to protest.
As The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/elizabeth-warren-agrees-with-msnbcs-reid-that-texas-abortion-law-is-turning-america-into-the-handmaids-tale">reported</a>, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) agreed with left-wing MSNBC host Joy Reid that Texas’ new abortion law was straight out of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale”:

The Texas law went into effect earlier this month and allows citizens to report doctors and anyone else involved in providing a woman an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.
“In the novel legal strategy, the state Legislature designed the law to prevent government officials from directly enforcing it. The move was meant to make it much more difficult to bring a pre-enforcement challenge because there are not the usual government officials to hold accountable in court,” CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/01/politics/texas-abortion-supreme-court-sb8-roe-wade/index.html">reported</a>. “Instead, the law allows private citizens — anywhere in the country — to bring civil suits against anyone who assists a pregnant person seeking an abortion in violation of the ban.”

Reid opened the Tuesday episode of “The ReidOut” by implying that, instead of passing pro-life protections for the unborn, Texas lawmakers should focus on “lifesaving” measures like mask mandates for schoolchildren. “In Texas, you cannot mandate lifesaving masks to prevent the spread of COVID,” she said.
She called the Supreme Court’s originalist justices “terrifying harbingers of the future of Roe v. Wade,” before warning: “By next summer, we could be living in our own version of The Handmaid’s Tale.”
She then asked for the dystopian literary assessment of Senator Elizabeth Warren. “People think it’s hyperbolic when I tweet about The Handmaid’s Tale coming to America,” Reid admitted, “but I don’t think it seems hyperbolic now. Does it to you?”
“No,” Warren replied curtly.
The senator said that wealthy women will find a way to obtain an abortion, so the Texas heartbeat law has nothing to do with protecting innocent life. Instead, it’s about “bearing down on the woman or trans person or non-binary, who is working three jobs, the one who’s already stretched to the limit, the one who is a child who has just found out that she is pregnant and doesn’t know how to get organized to get herself the kind of medical treatment that she needs.”
“You can get an amen for every single word of that,” Reid said later, before turning to Alexis McGill Johnson, president of the nation’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood.
Reid again invoked the 1985 Margaret Atwood book, warning that Texas’ success would give the impetus to those seeking to usher in policies like those implemented in “The Handmaid’s Tale” nationwide.
“These autocratic men want control of the whole country. They’re coming for California right now,” said Reid, in an apparent reference to California gubernatorial recall frontrunner Larry Elder. “They’re coming for the whole country. They’re not going to be satisfied until the whole country is Gilead. Wake up!”
Reid closed her interview with Johnson on an uncharacteristically religious note, telling the president of Planned Parenthood, “Thank you. Good luck. God Bless.”
CNN’s Kate Bolduan said: “Let’s just be real. The very same people, in the very same state, who say, ‘Don&#8217;t you dare tell me to wear a mask!’ The same people who say that is government overreach because it violates individual freedoms, those very same people clearly are saying now, never mind when it comes to my body and the medical decisions that I make with the advice of my doctor. Now that choice is totally fair game apparently to be taken out of my hands and dictated now by a bunch of politicians.”
“That is hypocrisy,” Bolduan emoted before repeating herself. “This is hypocrisy, the definition of.”
CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin agreed that the Supreme Court’s decision not to intervene was “a disgrace.” 
“This is the second-most famous opinion of the last 100 years of the Supreme Court, second probably only to Brown v. Board of Education, and here it is being tossed out without a word from the Supreme Court. How can they possibly allow this? … It&#8217;s an absolute disgrace.”
But pro-life advocates say the Texas law reflects the best science and the will of Texas voters.
A strong plurality (49%) of Texans supported the heartbeat bill in a University of Texas/Texas Tribune <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/political-news/nearly-half-of-all-texans-support-abortion-ban-after-6-weeks-new-poll-finds/">poll</a> taken this spring, and a majority (54%) said Texas should ban all abortions if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
“The Texas legislature, acting on the will of the people, debated and passed this law with the very simple goal of protecting unborn children with beating hearts from death in the womb,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life <a href="https://sba-list.org/">Susan B. Anthony List</a>. “This is how democracy works. The American people are hungry to finally let this debate play out across the country and be given the opportunity to catch our laws up with compassion for women and children and science. After nearly 50 years of suppression, we are hopeful that the Supreme Court will soon afford Americans the opportunity to finally let their voices be heard on the greatest human rights issue of our day.”
While science agrees that <a href="http://www.princeton.edu/~prolife/articles/embryoquotes2.html">life begins at conception</a>, advocates say a detectable fetal heartbeat represents an undeniable sign of life.
“A preborn baby’s heart is actively beating at 6 weeks and will have already beat nearly 16 million times by 15 weeks,” said Dr. Tara Sander Lee, senior fellow and director of life sciences at the Charlotte Lozier Institute. “At 6 weeks’ gestation, the baby’s heart rate is about 98 beats per minute, which can be easily detected by ultrasound.”
“Science highlights what the abortion industry tries to hide,” said <a href="https://lozierinstitute.org/">Charlotte Lozier Institute</a> President Chuck Donovan “Even at 6 weeks’ gestation, these little boys and little girls are amazingly complex human beings with a beating heart.”
“Protecting an unborn child with a heartbeat tests whether we have a heart, too,” he said.

Now that the Supreme Court has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/supreme-court-takes-up-mississippi-abortion-case-that-could-limit-roe-v-wade">taken up</a> a Mississippi law banning abortion after 15 weeks, leftists are peddling extremism. After CNN&#8217;s Chris Cuomo <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-fright-cnns-chris-cuomo-suggests-pro-life-legislation-about-racism">said that pro-life laws</a> are racially motivated, MSNBC&#8217;s Joy Reid said that &#8220;The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale&#8221; could be upon us.
During a segment on her show Monday night, Reid said a &#8220;Gilead-style government&#8221; could be springing up &#8220;right here in America.&#8221;
&#8220;The conservative-led Supreme Court has agreed to take up Mississippi&#8217;s restrictive abortion law, and women&#8217;s reproductive rights appear to be in serious, serious danger,&#8221; Reid said. &#8220;It’s straight out of &#8216;The Handmaid’s Tale,&#8217; with a Gilead-style government, right here in America.&#8221;
Reid went on to say that the SCOTUS case offers a &#8220;terrifying prospect,&#8221; suggesting that &#8220;far-right&#8221; religious extremists could soon own the country, just like in the Hulu series.
&#8220;It&#8217;s a terrifying prospect eerily reminiscent of &#8216;The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale,&#8217; where far-right wings religious extremists took up arms against their own country, one where women and their bodies were under the complete control of almost extravagantly corrupt and hypocritical men of god, quote, unquote,&#8221; she said, as reported by <a href="https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/kristine-marsh/2021/05/18/panicked-reid-supreme-court-ruling-abortion-straight-out">Newsbusters</a>. &#8220;What&#8217;s so scary and frankly traumatizing about that show and the book that inspired it is that it starts off in the very place that we live in right now where women have the right to choose what they do with their bodies until they don&#8217;t. And then in what seems like a blink of an eye, those rights were just gone.&#8221;
Reid then characterized Justice Amy Coney Barrett as some kind of &#8220;Aunt Lydia&#8221; figure by employing the phrase &#8220;under his eye,&#8221; a term used in the show to suggest that women are always under the watch of &#8220;The Man.&#8221;
&#8220;Naturally, abortion opponents are thrilled given the new conservative makeup of the court, especially after the arrival of Justice Amy Coney Barrett, under his eye,&#8221; said Reid. &#8220;Without strong protections, women, including many victims of rape and incest, would have to hopscotch across the country at whatever expense, maybe too much expense for women who aren&#8217;t rich, to seek safe harbor in one of the 14 states and Washington, D.C. that do respect a woman&#8217;s right to choose.&#8221;
Also on Monday night, CNN&#8217;s Chris Cuomo said new pro-life laws are about &#8220;white fright.&#8221;
“It’s not about science or consensus,” Cuomo said. “It’s about dividing lines, legislating to the far-right white-fright vote, flooding the zone with 536 bills that abridge a woman’s right to control her own body, in 46 states. It’s just like voting rights in one way.”
Margaret Atwood, the author of the book that &#8220;The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale&#8221; is based on, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-handmaids-tale-author-margaret-atwood-on-the-testaments/">said</a> that she garnered her inspiration for the feminist dystopian novel about women being forced to produce babies for infertile wealthy elites after visiting several totalitarian – largely Communist – regimes in Eastern Europe.
“So, there I am in West Berlin surrounded by the wall, and I’m visiting various totalitarian regimes in East Germany and Czechoslovakia and Poland. So, for instance, Ceaușescu in Romania made a law that women had to have four babies, and they had to have a pregnancy test every month. And if they weren’t pregnant, why not? … It’s not me who made this stuff up; the human race made it up, unfortunately,” she added.
“It is a warning,” Atwood said of her book. “I have never believed it can’t happen here. I’ve never believed that. And more and more people are joining me in that lack of belief.”
Handmaid costumes have almost become a staple of the pro-abortion movement and are regularly present <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/planned-parenthood-staged-a-handmaidens-tale-demonstration-2017-6">at Planned Parenthood rallies</a>.
