The Washington Post is defending its 3,000-word article about a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/washington-post-gets-random-woman-fired-for-satirical-halloween-costume-from-two-years-ago-backlash-ensues">random woman</a>, 54, who attended a Post editorial cartoonists’ 2018 Halloween party dressed as Meghan Kelly in blackface. The woman (who will not be named by The Daily Wire) was fired from her employer after she told them about the costume incident, and that The Washington Post was writing a story on it. 
Even though the woman was confronted at the party, left in humiliation, and apologized to the host the next day, The Post decided to run an investigation nearly two years later after Lexie Gruber — one of the party guests who confronted the woman — decided to seek news coverage for it.
&#8220;Employees of The Washington Post, including a prominent host, were involved in this incident, which impelled us to tell the story ourselves thoroughly and accurately while allowing all involved to have their say,&#8221; a spokesperson for The Washington Post told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/washington-post-halloween-costume-cancel-culture-defense">Fox News</a> in a statement. &#8220;The piece conveys with nuance and sensitivity the complex, emotionally fraught circumstances that unfolded at the party attended by media figures only two years ago where an individual in blackface was not told promptly to leave.&#8221;
“America&#8217;s grappling with racism has entered a phase in which people who once felt they should keep quiet are now raising their voices in public. The story is a microcosm of what the country is going through right now,” said the spokesperson. 
Gruber, who claims to have been harassed by the woman at the party, emailed The Washington Post about her experience at the party, in addition to emailing the host of the party, who she never even met, asking him to reveal the identity of the woman. 
The host initially told Gruber he didn’t know who she was talking about, but later acknowledged that the woman was a friend of his, but that he wouldn’t give over her name. Gruber responded: “Hiding her name is a deliberate act of white privilege and cowardice, not friendship.”
Lyric Prince, a friend of Gruber who confronted the woman at the party, told the Post she isn’t interested in an apology, but wanted the party host to condemn his friend in public: “I want people who read this story to say to themselves, ‘I cannot excuse my friend’s bad behavior because it does reflect on me if I say nothing.’ ”
When the host offered to connect Gruber with the woman, who he indicated “wanted a chance to explain and apologize,” Gruber declined, saying that she wasn’t “comfortable reaching out to a woman who publicly harassed me and my friend — simply because we are not white.”
The story, however, doesn’t present clear evidence that Gruber and her friend were harassed at the party. 
The news agency reported that Prince approached the woman and told her she looked “horrible” as a way of “clapping back” at the costume without directly addressing it. The woman, who has reportedly talked to a therapist over her shame about the costume, claims she nervously laughed off the remarks after Prince “told me that I was ugly and had wrinkles.” 
Gruber then approached the woman to explain the degrading history of blackface, later recalling that “there wasn’t a single person in that party who didn’t hear me when I spoke.” Gruber and Prince left the party after the interaction, as did the woman, who said she herself was crying when she left. 
Prince told the Post that she has sought therapy over the incident: “I felt threatened and physically and emotionally exposed. . . . I felt powerless in a way that I never want to feel again.” The woman told the Post she wants an opportunity to apologize to Gruber, the person who brought the incident to the news agency’s attention. 
“With this story, they’ll get the public humiliation they want, but it won’t foster any real dialogue between us. I wish they would talk to me. I made a mistake, and I understand now that when black people make a mistake, they can get killed,” said the woman.

The mainstream media has apparently learned nothing from the reckoning it faced after Justine Sacco, a random woman with barely 100 Twitter followers, was fired from her job for tweeting about AIDS and being white.
The media – and people on social media – still seem to enjoy the power trip they get from getting a random person fired. The latest example comes from The Washington Post, where two reporters wrote 3,000-plus words about a woman who was not previously a public figure who wore blackface two years ago at a Post cartoonist’s party.
The woman whose life has been upended (who will not be named by The Daily Wire) attended Post editorial cartoonist Tom Tole’s Halloween party, where political elites and others gather each year, many dressed in politically relevant costumes. For example, in 2018, the Post reported, Dana Milbank dressed as Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who had just been confirmed a couple weeks earlier. Milbank made a satirical reference to Kavanaugh by wearing a “beer-dispensing device on his head.”
As is often the case, someone thought they were making a satirical reference but instead fell flat. One woman at the party dressed as Megyn Kelly in blackface, following the then-NBC host’s statements about wearing blackface. The woman was trying to mock Kelly, but two other women at the party confronted her then and have apparently been stewing about the incident ever since. They have now been rewarded by being featured in the Post’s article about the incident from two years, which has been dredged up in the wake of race riots across the country. One of the two women first emailed Toles – whom she had never met – telling him how offended she was that a guest at his party dressed that way.
“In 2018, I attended a Halloween party at your home,” the woman wrote. “I understand that you are not responsible for the behavior of your guests, but at the party, a woman was in Blackface. She harassed me and my friend — the only two women of color — and it was clear she made her ‘costume’ with racist intent.”
The woman then asked for Toles’ help in identifying the woman and emailed the Post to get them to cover the incident – which it obviously obliged.
The other offended woman said she didn’t want an apology (read: she wanted to destroy the woman who wore the costume), and she wanted Toles to atone for the incident.
The costumed woman was apparently run out of the party in tears, so it’s not like she wasn’t made aware of her mistake. She had already been punished and was embarrassed and regretful of her costume choice. But that wasn’t enough for the two women who convinced the Post to punish this woman further – two years after the fact.
The woman has now been fired from her job. One partygoer told the Post that reopening the incident would “be too much of a punishment.” The Post did it anyway.
People on Twitter shot back at the Post. Reason reporter Elizabeth Nolan Brown tweeted: “If you’re an adult who is ‘physically &amp; emotionally’ threatened by an offensive Halloween constume [sic] and still scarred by it 2 years later— get help y’all. That’s not on anyone but you.”
Katie Herzog tweeted in jest: “BREAKING: Woman No One Has Ever Heard of Commits Microagression Two Years Ago.”
Others pointed out that the woman being ostracized is a liberal who vehemently opposes President Donald Trump, but that isn’t enough to save her in today’s current climate, where being offended gets people media attention.

A Halloween party at the White House last week invited children and their families to help &#8220;Build the Wall&#8221; by creating a paper mural with their own personalized bricks.

Children dressed in costumes were given brick-colored paper and asked to write their names down to form the display. Their &#8220;bricks&#8221; were taped to a wall on, forming a &#8220;Build the Wall&#8221; display on the first floor of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
The &#8220;Wall&#8221; was the work of an EEOB staffer, not the president&#8217;s or vice president&#8217;s office directly.
&#8220;Earlier in the week offices inside the EEOB had been instructed to put together kid-friendly displays for trick-or-treaters,&#8221; continued HuffPost. &#8220;The displays were supposed to be interactive and inspiring, and all were supposed to address the party’s theme: &#8216;When I grow up I want to be…'&#8221;
Though the vice president&#8217;s ceremonial office is located on the building&#8217;s second floor, a spokesperson for Mike Pence said his office had no hand in the display.
“Our ceremonial office had a plane display,” the spokesperson said. “We had kids build their own paper airplanes and fly them. That’s what the VP came to. He came to our ceremonial office.”
One person in attendance told Yahoo News on the condition of anonymity that they were horrified by the display. “Horrified. We were horrified,&#8221; the person said.
One anonymous official in the Trump administration felt people were making too big a deal out of the display. “Everyone loses their minds over everything, and nothing can be funny anymore,” the person said.
One Republican congressional staffer frankly said, &#8220;Who gives a s*** about EEOB having Halloween decorations.”
Ben Rohrbaugh, who worked on National Security Council on border security in the Obama administration, told Yahoo News that the wall is a &#8220;xenophobic symbol.&#8221;

Nate Snyder, who previously served in the Department of Homeland Security as a counterterrorism official, said the White House never created such political displays during the Obama administration.

A haunted house in Connecticut found itself at the center of controversy when some locals mistakenly believed that statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary were part of the attraction.
According to <a href="https://wtkr.com/2019/10/27/haunted-house-faces-controversy-virgin-mary-statues-on-property-covered/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">WTKR</a>, the Nightmare on Wolcott Street attraction in the city of Waterbury featured two Virgin Mary statues that were meant to be Christmas decor, leading some locals to believe that they were a sacrilegious part of the attraction. The statues were covered up with sheets at the request of the mayor&#8217;s office.
In a lengthy post on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=133313724739838&amp;id=118949746176236">Facebook</a>, the owners of the attraction, Renee Dearborn and Mike Anderson, apologized to anyone who was offended by the appearance of the statues.
&#8220;First, we want to apologize to anyone who&#8217;s been offended by the pic of the statues,&#8221; said the post. &#8220;They have nothing and will never have anything to do with Nightmare On Wolcott Street. That&#8217;s why they&#8217;re placed on the back dock in front of the restoration shop and not at our front entrance of Nightmare on Wolcott Street.&#8221;
The post added that the statues were never even a part of the attraction, as some locals believed, and were only seen when customers parked in the free lot.
&#8220;The only time the statues are seen is when the customers park in our lot (for free),&#8221; it continued. &#8220;Our blessed mother has never and will never be part of our haunted attraction. They&#8217;re placed where they are at the restoration shop because we&#8217;re planning to restore them and use them for an upcoming 2020 Christmas nativity scene.&#8221;
The post concluded with a message about the dangers of passing judgment before knowing all the facts – a common practice these days.

Speaking with <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/travel/virgin-mary-statues-haunted-house-outrage">Fox News</a>, Renee Dearborn said that the business remained steady at the haunted house despite the controversy:

Dearborn said she wanted to clarify that she couldn&#8217;t attribute it all to the attraction&#8217;s recent press. According to her, about half of the visitors hadn&#8217;t even heard of the controversy.
She also confirmed to Fox News that once the last ticket is sold for the haunted house attraction, the plastic wrap will be coming off the statues.</blockquote>
While the Nightmare at Wolcott haunted house generated a controversy that was ultimately the result of an honest mistake and miscommunication, some Halloween displays have generated real controversies in their neighborhoods, such as the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mean-spirited-anti-trump-halloween-display-divides-paul-bois">anti-Trump display last year</a> that featured President Trump as a cackling devil.
“The intricate and details display includes what appears to be an immigrant child in a cage, tombstones for departed White House staff members, caricatures of members of the Trump administration and other satirical elements,” reported CBS local at the time.
Another display featured a screaming scarecrow labeled as “Ted Cruz” sitting next to a sign castigating the Texas senator as “The most punchable face in America.” Another display featured President Trump as a cackling devil-like figure with a name tag that said, “Come with me my child into the heart of darkness itself!”

According to <a href="https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/parenting/kids/kmart-strips-child-bride-costume-from-shelves-after-mum-launches-petition/news-story/87c20e6ef236c452f789ab5358185b8e">News.com.au</a>, a Kmart in Australia pulled a kiddie bride costume from its shelves after a Melbourne woman named Shannon B. <a href="https://www.change.org/p/kmart-kmart-to-remove-child-bride-costume-from-its-shelves">launched a Change.org petition</a>, claiming the costume trivializes child brides and sex trafficking victims.
&#8220;Tell Kmart this is beyond inappropriate and offensive and that they have a social responsibility to pull this item off their shelves immediately,&#8221; the petition read. &#8220;Please help me get this message to Kmart by signing this petition.&#8221;
&#8220;Each year, 12 million children (girls as young as 6 years old &#8212; the same size as this &#8216;costume&#8217;) are sold or married off by their family without their consent. That’s one million child marriages per month!&#8221; it continued. &#8220;That equates to 23 children every minute or 1 child every 2 minutes. If this continues, 150 million more children will be married by the year 2030.&#8221;
&#8220;Child marriage means child abuse and torture in its worst forms &#8212; paedophilia, child rape, child slavery, child sex trafficking. Kmart &#8212; Take this child bride costume off your shelves,&#8221; it concluded.
Shannon B. said nothing about the social ramifications of little girls dressing up as Belle, Snow White, or Cinderella for Halloween &#8212; princesses whose stories center around marrying a prince among other things.
The petition received only 200 signatures, many from people who admitted they simply wanted to troll Shannon B. for being unreasonable.

“Shannon, this kind of crap is what makes people hate others,” one person wrote. “It’s just a costume for goodness sake.&#8221;
“My daughter has asked multiple times for a ‘dress like mummy had.&#8217; It is a dress up nothing more … you’re ruining it for everyone. Get over yourself,&#8221; wrote another.
“Dude seriously, get a life. It’s a costume,” another said.
People who agreed with Shannon B. phrased it in feminist terms. &#8220;Totally agree. this [sic] is absurd and role defining! Wrong age group too,” said one person.
“Anything that trivialises child marriage is disturbing,” child rights campaigner Mercy Chipo Jumo said.
Despite the fact that Shannon B.&#8217;s petition generated no significant backlash, Kmart Australia decided to pull the costume anyway.
“Kmart Australia regrets the decision to range the bride costume,” a spokesperson told news.com.au. “It was not intended to cause offence and we sincerely apologise. We have made the decision to withdraw this product.”

Kmart Australia Pulls Kiddie Bride Costume After Complaints It Promotes Child Brides

The War on Halloween continues in 2019 as schools across the country announce they will not be celebrating the beloved holiday over issues of inclusivity.
According to <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/halloween-bans-school-205129805.html">Yahoo Lifestyle</a>, the Evanston/Skokie School District 65 in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, announced last month that Halloween celebrations alienate certain members of the staff and student body who do not participate for religious or personal reasons as well as those who cannot afford costumes.
“As part of our school and district-wide commitment to equity, we are focused on building community and creating inclusive, welcoming environments for all,” the statement from the superintendents read. “While we recognize that Halloween is a fun tradition for many, it is not a holiday that is celebrated by everyone for various reasons and we want to honor that.&#8221;
“We are also aware of the range of inequities that are embedded in Halloween celebrations that take place as part of the school day and the unintended negative impact that it can have on some students, families, and staff,&#8221; the statement continued. &#8220;As a result, we are moving away from Halloween celebrations that include costumes and similar traditions during the school day. We are confident our school communities will find new and engaging ways to build community within their schools.&#8221;
“In District 65, we remain committed to equity and discontinuing current and past practices that are not in alignment with our goals,&#8221; it concluded. &#8220;Our schools are special because of the people who are a part of them and our commitment to serving the educational needs of our students. Many of our schools have already moved away from the traditional Halloween activities during the school day and have scheduled Halloween or other seasonal activities outside of the school day.”
Other schools across the country have expressed similar dissatisfaction with Halloween and have banned the celebration on school grounds. For instance, North Country Elementary in Antelope, California, told <a href="https://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2019/10/07/antelope-elementary-school-cancels-halloween-events-citing-low-school-attendance/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">CBS Sacramento</a> that the school will be celebrating a &#8220;harvest festival&#8221; over Halloween.
“We have consistently respected the right of families to choose to have their children participate, or not, in such celebrations,” said the statement. “However, when the number of students choosing to not participate becomes significant, it is incumbent on the school leadership to re-evaluate and determine if the event is truly meeting the social and academic needs of its student population.”
Over at <a href="https://www.wcax.com/content/news/Burlington-School-District-cancels-all-Halloween-celebrations-during-school-563366241.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Vermont’s Burlington School District</a>, English Learning director of programs Miriam Ehtesham-Cating told local reporters about the fear people have over culturally-insensitive costumes.
“Many people are made uncomfortable by the notion that you change your identity, you turn into someone else and those somebody else could represent cultural appropriations,&#8221; said Cating.

In 2017, the Boyden Elementary School in Walpole, Massachusetts, also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/school-cancels-halloween-not-inclusive-enough-paul-bois">canceled Halloween</a> for not being “inclusive enough.” In a message to parents, the school principal said that the parade does not respect students’ “individual differences.”
“The costume parade is out of our ordinary routine and can be difficult for many students,” said the principal. “Also, the parade is not inclusive of all the students and it is our goal each and every day to ensure all student’s individual differences are respected.”

Thousands of witches plan to gather on Thursday to cast a spell on President Trump in a move dubbed #MagicResistance.

Every year, as Halloween approaches, the social justice-oriented &#8220;woke&#8221; police begin issuing their edicts, proscribing certain &#8220;offensive&#8221; costumes and cancelling Halloween events lest someone &#8212; anyone &#8212; be offended.
Late last month, an elementary school in the tony Chicago suburb of Evanston announced that they would be cancelling Halloween altogether over concerns that some children who did not celebrate the holiday would be offended by chilling costumes and spooky treats, <a href="https://northcooknews.com/stories/514086405-evanston-elementary-school-spooked-out-of-celebrating-halloween-this-year">according to North Cook News</a>.
<a href="http://www.hngnews.com/monona_cottage_grove/article_1ba52c5f-ecef-53b9-b4d2-1978f5e522a9.html">A Wisconsin school followed suit</a>, calling the holiday &#8220;inappropriate&#8221; and not &#8220;inclusive,&#8221; and also did away with parades, parties, and costume-wearing in school. Supervisors at the school district claim that the holiday made certain children feel excluded and highlighted &#8220;inequities.&#8221;
Across the pond in Scotland, one school swapped out Halloween for &#8220;Autumn Dance,&#8221; according <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/10108881/school-ban-halloween-costumes-edinburgh/">to the Sun</a>, after two parents complained that “not all families celebrate Halloween,&#8221; and forcing kids to purchase Halloween costumes to wear to school could put an unnecessary strain on family budgets.
Most schools happily incorporate Halloween into their calendars, though &#8212; at least for the first twelve years of mandatory schooling. Once students get to college, the real woke police take over, sucking the fun out of Halloween with strict rules about which costumes are acceptable and which costumes could lead to trouble.
Michigan State University leads the way in 2019, releasing its rules late last week and pasting posters across campus asking students to consider whether their planned costumes are racially, culturally, or ethnically based.
<a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/michigan-state-u-ripped-for-politically-correct-halloween-costume-fails-posters/">The College Fix reports</a> that &#8220;[p]osters asking &#8216;Is Your Costume Racially, Culturally, or Ethnically Based?&#8217; appeared in dorms last week courtesy of the school’s Residence Education and Housing Services. The placards feature examples of &#8216;costume fails&#8217;: a guy dressed like a mariachi, women dressed as a Native American (&#8216;hypersexualized racism&#8217;) and in a Japanese kimono, and … a space alien (allegedly represents &#8216;illegal aliens&#8217;?).&#8221;
<a href="http://www.theamericanmirror.com/michigan-state-u-bans-mustaches-sombreros-aliens-in-orange-suits-mexicans-japanese-hypersexualized-racism-for-halloween/">The American Mirror</a>, which covers incidents of far-left meddling across the education system, was able to get ahold of one of the posters, which gives strict guidelines to students celebrating both on and off campus. No &#8220;[s]ombreros and mustaches, Nazi gear, Rastafarians, illegal aliens, Middle Eastern attire, and other ‘racially, culturally, or ethnically based’ costumes.&#8221;
Students are warned to avoid any costume that involves &#8220;cultural appropriation:&#8221; &#8220;[w]estern appropriations of non-Western or non-white forms” carry with them “the connotation of exploitation and dominance.&#8221;
The school told the Mirror that they won&#8217;t necessarily be enforcing the rules, however. MSU, the Mirror reports, “is not saying students can’t dress that way,” but want students to know “how their costumes can be portrayed,&#8221; particularly on social media, where audiences can quickly mock and cancel an individual for non-woke choices.
Of course, Michigan State University&#8217;s mascot is the &#8220;Spartan,&#8221; drawn straight &#8212; one might even say, appropriated &#8212; from Greek history.
The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (or FIRE) <a href="https://www.thefire.org/halloween-costumes-on-college-campuses/">notes that not all colleges are as &#8220;hands off</a>&#8221; in enforcing rules as MSU, and that students have been punished for non-woke costumes in the past. Students should be aware that colleges may not be clear about how &#8220;wrong&#8221; costumes will be treated, that guidelines can be vague, and that the rules can sometimes be subjectively enforced.
FIRE also notes, however, that Halloween costumes are protected speech and that public colleges and universities must allow students to express themselves as the students &#8212; not the administrators &#8212; see fit.
To be safe, college and university students might want to forgo politically charged costumes and stick with more generic commentary on current events. Yandy.com, the headquarters for bizarre, overly sexy costumes on the Internet, features a &#8220;<a href="https://www.yandy.com/yandy-hard-outlaw-costume">sexy White Claw</a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href="https://www.yandy.com/yandy-beyond-burger-costume.php">sexy meatless hamburger</a>,&#8221; and &#8220;<a href="https://www.yandy.com/yandy-sexy-tariff-costume">sexy tariff</a>&#8221; costumes that are sure to confuse rather than oppress.

Happy Halloween! Annual ‘Offensive’ Costume Bans Begin, Starting With Michigan State University

On Tuesday, in the middle of final exam week, a student from West Virginia University was sent an emailed letter from an assistant dean notifying him that he is &#8220;the subject of an investigation regarding alleged prohibited conduct.&#8221;
In the letter (attached below), Assistant Dean LiDell Evans informed Joseph Cortese, a fourth-year student, that he was required to attend a meeting on Friday concerning an investigation about a photo he posted on Instagram of himself dressed as a Border Patrol agent for Halloween. 
&#8220;This letter serves to put you on notice that pursuant to section 9.2 of the Student Conduct Code and Discipline Procedure for the Main Campus of West Virginia University, you are the subject of an investigation regarding alleged prohibited conduct,&#8221; Evans wrote. 
The email also informed Cortese that if he did not contact the office or attend the meeting, his student account would have a &#8220;hold&#8221; placed on it.
&#8220;I received this email Wednesday and have had awful anxiety since,&#8221; Cortese told The Daily Wire in an interview. &#8220;While I was trying to study for finals, this was looming on the back of my mind.&#8221;
&#8220;I know I didn&#8217;t do as well on my finals as I should have due to this,&#8221; Cortese added.
The email detailed that the complaint was received on November 6. The photo was posted before Halloween.
The photo, which Cortese agreed to share with The Daily Wire (see above), shows him handcuffing a female student who dressed up with him for Halloween. Cortese is wearing an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement black hat and a Border Patrol T-shirt, while the female is wearing what Cortese says is an alien costume with a piece of paper attached to her shirt that reads &#8220;illegal.&#8221;
Cortese, who is also the Communications Director for Students for Trump, said that during the meeting, Assistant Dean Evans told him the costume could be &#8220;misinterpreted the wrong way&#8221; but acknowledged that it was Cortese&#8217;s &#8220;constitutional right&#8221; to wear the costume.
Cortese says the female student has not been notified of an investigation or called in for a meeting by the assistant dean. 
Pro-civil liberties non-profit Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) told The Daily Wire in a statement that they are &#8220;aware of this case and looking into it.&#8221; 
&#8220;Public universities enter treacherous terrain when they investigate expression protected by the First Amendment,&#8221; said FIRE.
&#8220;The West Virginia University Office of Student Conduct received a complaint claiming the student was posting &#8216;vulgar hateful Instagrams&#8217; but did not single out what was &#8216;vulgar&#8217; or &#8216;hateful&#8217; about them,&#8221; WVU said in a statement to The Daily Wire. &#8220;The Office followed standard procedure, including the timing, to follow up on the complaint and talk with the student. The Office tries to wrap up any matters before students leave campus at the end of each semester. No charges or disciplinary action was taken and the matter is now closed.&#8221;

The spending numbers for Halloween keep climbing every year, with an increasing number of Americans feeling comfortable enough to shell out a few extra dollars on costumes and candy to enjoy the spook-tivities.
According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), Americans will spend upwards <a href="https://nrf.com/media/press-releases/halloween-spending-reach-9-billion">of $9 billion this year on Halloween</a>. In 2016, before President Trump had taken office, Halloween spending had <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/102714/how-does-halloween-affect-economy.asp">fallen down to just $8.4 billion</a>.
The numbers on individual spending have also slightly increased from 2017, with Americans spending $86.79 per person versus last year&#8217;s $86.13.
&#8220;The NRF estimates that 175 million Americans will partake in Halloween festivities this year,&#8221; reports <a href="https://www.wpri.com/holidays/halloween/halloween-spending-to-reach-9-billion-this-year/1562500836">WPRI</a>. &#8220;Among those celebrating, 70% plan to hand out candy, 50% will decorate their home or yard, 48% will wear costumes and 32% will throw or attend a party.&#8221;
NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay indeed attributed the positive numbers to the high-performing economy.
&#8220;The economy is good and consumer confidence is high, so families are ready to spend on Halloween this year,&#8221; Shay told reporters. &#8220;Retailers are stocking up to supply children, pets and adults with their favorite decorations, candy and costumes for the season.&#8221;
Most of the spending will go towards candy, of course, a full 95% of it. Another 74% of the money will be spent on decorations, 68% on costumes and 35% on greeting cards.
According to <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/102714/how-does-halloween-affect-economy.asp">Investopedia</a>, the state of the economy plays a big factor in whether or not holiday spending will be a boom or bust since little of it is a necessary expense in the utilitarian sense. In fact, the numbers on holiday spending, especially for ones as superficial as Halloween, provides a great barometer to judge consumer confidence. The outlet writes:

It could also be argued that the state of the economy affects the Halloween industry more than Halloween affects the economy. In a down economy, for instance, consumers may be less likely to spend on frivolous goods such as costumes, candy, pumpkins and home decorations, or attend parties. Regardless of which way the relationship is considered more causally significant, many economists believe the increase in spending has a positive effect. Another possible (albeit slight) factor in the net positive of this year&#8217;s Halloween could stem from a high number of Americans anticipating the expense in August and September, causing them to cut spending during that period of time. Conversely, people might spend big on Halloween and then offset the cost with low-spending during the month of November before the Christmas season kicks in. Regardless, the increased Halloween spending not only pumps more money into the economy but also increases jobs in industries that rely on Halloween spending, such as pumpkin growers and themed retail outlets.
&#8220;Many retail stores open up only for Halloween and, when November arrives, these shops close up and wait until the next spooky season,&#8221; reports Investopedia. &#8220;Additionally, some industries expect and plan for large increases during the holiday, including producers of pumpkins and candy.&#8221;

But anyway, the Jim Acosta costume includes a mask with a face in a permanent expression of sanctimonious self-seriousness topped with hair that magically goes from salt-and-pepper to pitch black after just a little dab of narcissism. Jim is having fun terrifying the neighbors by stomping zombie-like through public gatherings chanting in the guttural voice of the living dead, &#8220;Look at me. I&#8217;m Jim Acosta. Look at me,&#8221; until everyone laughs, then gets bored with him and goes home.
The ribbon for the funniest costume goes to the two pranksters who dressed up as a centaur with the head of CNN&#8217;s Don Lemon, with one person dressed as the horse&#8217;s ass, and the other as the centaur&#8217;s tail. As a fun Halloween game, we surrounded the Lemon centaur with conservatives and watched him prance around shouting, &#8220;Everyone who disagrees with me is racist!&#8221; until somebody finally canceled the cable service and the Lemon centaur vanished into complete obscurity, leaving everyone to wonder if he had ever really existed in the first place and, if so, why?
The plastic trophy for most ridiculous costume goes to the lady who dressed up as Hillary Clinton for President in 2020. Wearing a dyed blonde wig and holding a half-empty bottle of Chardonnay, Hillary spent most of the party stumbling around giving each and every guest a different excuse for why she lost the last election. She then explained her motivation for taking yet another shot at the White House by saying, &#8220;I sacrificed every scrap of dignity I had to get this gig, that&#8217;s why.&#8221; After which, she did a face-plant into the rum punch, where she remained for the rest of the evening.

&#8220;As the #1 Halloween candy (with over half of candy buyers purchasing Reese&#8217;s), Reese&#8217;s has come up with a solution &#8211; give us your unwanted candy, and we&#8217;ll give you what you actually want &#8211; Reese&#8217;s Peanut Butter Cups,&#8221; said Anna Lingeris, spokeswoman for Reese&#8217;s distributor Hershey.
So where can the Peanut Butter Cup Lovers of America get their spoils? Only in New York. Ugh.
&#8220;This Wednesday at exactly 4 p.m., Reese&#8217;s candy converter &#8211; a huge orange machine you can&#8217;t miss &#8211; will be set up outside Washington Square Park on 5th Avenue in New York, and remain in place until 9 p.m,&#8221; CNN reported. &#8220;Reese&#8217;s is expected to give out up to 10,000 peanut butter cups, Lingeris said.&#8221;
No word on what will happen to the unwanted candy people drop off at the machine, but hopefully some of it &#8211; the candy corn &#8211; will be destroyed.

HEAVEN: Reese’s Builds Machine To Fix All Your Halloween Candy Woes

It&#8217;s Halloween and time for another round of outrage over inappropriate costumes.
Once upon a time, parents &#8212; most of them, anyway &#8212; were concerned with oversexualized costumes for little children, but how unenlightened was that ? Today we&#8217;re focusing our energy on what&#8217;s really important. Now it&#8217;s all about &#8220;cultural appropriation.&#8221; White children need to &#8220;own their privilege&#8221; and not dress up and pretend to belong to a non-oppressive race.
Megyn Kelly ran afoul of NBC&#8217;s &#8220;diversity/inclusion&#8221; police, and as we write this, it looks like she&#8217;ll be canned for saying: &#8220;But what is racist? Because truly, you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on white face for Halloween.&#8221; Oops. The word &#8220;blackface&#8221; is loaded and should be avoided, since people immediately think of minstrel shows, and kids shouldn&#8217;t dress up as Al Jolson crooning &#8220;Mammy&#8221; in &#8220;The Jazz Singer.&#8221;
Kelly continued: &#8220;Back when I was a kid, that was OK, as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character.&#8221; Not only was she tongue-lashed on air by NBC&#8217;s black news stars; it seems like this gave NBC a reason to end her morning show, a cover story to nix the (cringe) Fox News woman.
It might have been a better starting point to ask if it&#8217;s offensive for a white boy to want to be Black Panther for a few hours. And if that&#8217;s wrong, can a Person of Color be Superman?
Can a white comedian impersonate a black man? If not, then can a black man not poke fun at white people either? And what does it say about white people that when that happens, we &#8230; laugh?
Oh, the intolerant preachings of the tolerant left.
CNN analyst Kirsten Powers is one of these obnoxious people. The other day, she tweeted: &#8220;Dear white people who are upset that you can&#8217;t dress up as another race or culture for Halloween: your feelings don&#8217;t matter. The only feelings that matter are of those who feel disrespected/mocked by you appropriating their culture for entertainment. Show some common decency.&#8221;
This is the same Kirsten Powers who wrote a book in 2015 titled &#8220;The Silencing: How the Left Is Killing Free Speech.&#8221; Back then, she worked for Fox.
Back in 2015, after Powers&#8217; book came out, then-Yale lecturer Erika Christakis sent an email around campus suggesting Halloween used to be a time for children to be a little naughty or subversive. She wrote about Disney princess costumes, saying: &#8220;it is hard for me to give credence to a claim that there is something objectionably &#8216;appropriative&#8217; about a blonde-haired child&#8217;s wanting to be Mulan for a day. &#8230; I wonder what is the statute of limitations on dreaming of dressing as Tiana the Frog Princess if you aren&#8217;t a black girl from New Orleans? Is it okay if you are eight, but not 18?&#8221;
She even concluded, &#8220;Whose business is it to control the forms of costumes of young people? It&#8217;s not mine, I know that.&#8221;
Nearly a thousand students, faculty members and deans called for both Christakis and her husband, Dr. Nicholas Christakis, a Yale professor, to be fired immediately for this alleged offense. She stopped lecturing, and her husband resigned some duties at the end of the school year in 2016.
Powers actually spoke to the Christakis incident (and others) when she was a Fox News analyst in November 2015. She said, &#8220;It is not actually that anybody is in any danger.&#8221; Bill O&#8217;Reilly added, &#8220;It is oppressive to hear somebody with an opposing point of view.&#8221; Powers replied, &#8220;Exactly. &#8230; They talk about it as if they&#8217;ve been actually physically attacked, because somebody has expressed an opinion different than theirs.&#8221;
Now re-read that tweet of hers. You have our permission to laugh &#8212; quietly.
There&#8217;s nothing wrong with Halloween spurring a &#8220;teaching moment&#8221; for children, but what is being taught? Leftists want to use these costume controversies as just another grenade to destroy the careers of anyone asking them a single challenging question about how to negotiate their minefield.

Megyn Kelly was forced to apologize after she questioned whether a white person dressing up as a black character or celebrity on Halloween was a racist gesture. Should she have? Andrew Klavan, host of &#8216;The Andrew Klavan Show,&#8217; thinks the controversy is the stupidest thing ever, and he explained why on Wednesday&#8217;s episode of the show.
He said, &#8220;I want to talk about this thing with Megyn Kelly &#8212; if you haven&#8217;t heard about this, she went on her show and they were discussing Halloween costumes, and of course I&#8217;m not joking, the Left just wants to suck the joy out of everything we do. Everything is problematical; everything has to be reconsidered; everything has to be looked at in the light of their woke, brilliant righteousness.&#8221;
Klavan continued, &#8220;Megyn Kelly went on and she was talking about being in costume, talking about a white woman who had put on a costume of Diana Ross and made her skin look a little darker so she looked more like Diana Ross, and she said, &#8216;Gee, I think this would be okay.&#8217; And the people on the show with her said they didn&#8217;t agree because of the old days when people would do minstrel shows, and they would do kind of cliched stereotyped versions of black people with the white lips and all this stuff. Megyn Kelly then got slammed, of course, by the Stalinists on Twitter and she had to apologize. I&#8217;m about to tell you why we should very, very much dress up in blackface, or whiteface, or any other damn thing we please.&#8221;
After playing a clip of Kelly&#8217;s apology, Klavan asked if it was okay for an African-American kid to dress-up as the white superhero Batman or a Caucasian kid dress up as the Black Panther, stating that he did not see a problem with a child dressing up as their hero.
&#8220;Look, of course there are costumes that wouldn&#8217;t be right if they express hatred, if they express disrespect,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to see anybody dressing up as a Klansmen or a Nazi or anything like that, that&#8217;s not the point. But what if your hero is a ballplayer, and you&#8217;re a white kid and you want to dress up as a black ballplayer, if you want to wear his jersey and that&#8217;s not alright?&#8221;
&#8220;There are people on the Right agreeing with this, saying she said something stupid. I don&#8217;t think she said something stupid at all, I&#8217;m totally on her side,&#8221; he concluded.

Megyn Kelly set off another round of disingenuous outrage yesterday when she suggested that perhaps it&#8217;s not always racist for a white person to dress as a non-white person for Halloween. She argued that such a costume could be a tribute, something done with innocent intentions and in good fun, and therefore not in any way racist. Predictably, people lost their minds over this perfectly reasonable point of view and Kelly issued a <a href="https://urbanhollywood411.com/2018/10/24/emotional-megyn-kelly-apologizes-again-for-blackface-comments/">tearful apology</a> this morning. So commences another Halloween preemptively ruined by humorless left wing scolds.
USA Today columnist Kirsten Powers <a href="https://twitter.com/KirstenPowers/status/1054824232444743681">stated</a> the liberal position with appropriate levels of self-righteousness: &#8220;Dear white people who are upset that you can&#8217;t dress up as another race or culture for Halloween: your feelings don&#8217;t matter. The only feelings that matter are of those who feel disrespected/mocked by you appropriating their culture for entertainment. Show some common decency.&#8221;
No intelligent statement has ever begun with &#8220;Dear white people,&#8221; and this was no exception. She says that only the feelings of the Offended Party matter. If a person feels that their culture is being &#8220;appropriated,&#8221; then it is. This seems to be the consensus view among liberals. In an <a href="https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2018/10/23/cultural-appropriation-wrong-anytime/1683648002/">editorial</a> published by the Cincinnati Enquirer, a white woman confessed to dressing her daughter as Pocahontas a few years ago. She says that she didn&#8217;t intend to be racist, but she was racist.
This is all quite mad for many reasons, but I&#8217;d like to highlight just one:
St. Patrick&#8217;s Day.
My ancestors are Irish. On St. Patrick&#8217;s Day, a whole lot of non-Irish people dress like Leprechauns and chug beer. If I were to adopt the language of the Left, I might say that my Irish heritage is appropriated, mocked, and reduced to crude stereotypes. But I will not say that. And I don&#8217;t think that any of the real Irish people in Ireland say that, either. I think they just laugh at us and roll their eyes. As for me, I go to a bar and join the festivities.
Nobody is offended by St. Patrick&#8217;s Day. We all seem to understand that although people are advancing unflattering stereotypes about the Irish, they are doing it in good fun, and with affection, and I think even a bit of envy. Everyone wants to be Irish on St. Patrick&#8217;s Day, and so those of us with authentic Irish genes feel a bit of pride. We don&#8217;t go around wagging our fingers. We let these poser Irish have their fun, and we feel good that we are only semi-poser Irish.
But where are the Leftist cultural purity defenders on March 17? Nowhere to be found. They lose their minds about &#8220;culturally insensitive&#8221; costumes and festivities on every day of the year except that one. Why?
Well, they might claim that it&#8217;s only bigoted to &#8220;appropriate&#8221; the culture of oppressed people. The trouble with that justification is that it&#8217;s completely arbitrary. But more to the point, the Irish were terribly oppressed for centuries. The history of the Irish people has been one misery after another. They&#8217;ve been persecuted, subjugated, killed, imprisoned, and starved en masse. They&#8217;ve been driven from their homelands and then discriminated against abroad. Yet we still drink green beer and eat Lucky Charms and represent their culture with ornery leprechaun mascots.
It doesn&#8217;t bother me, personally. It doesn&#8217;t bother anyone. It&#8217;s all in good fun. That&#8217;s the point. If we can gaze approvingly and good-naturedly upon a sea of drunken idiots with green wigs and &#8220;Kiss me I&#8217;m Irish&#8221; pins singing &#8220;I Would Walk 500 Miles&#8221; off key at a pub on St. Patrick&#8217;s Day, why can&#8217;t we extend the same understanding to people wearing ethnic costumes on Halloween? How can this massive double standard possibly be justified?
It can&#8217;t. Double standards can never be justified. That&#8217;s why they&#8217;re double standards. But even if I can&#8217;t prevent the double standard, I can at least decline to participate in it. That&#8217;s why I&#8217;ll laugh along with the revelers on St. Patrick&#8217;s Day and the people in their perfectly innocent though supposedly &#8220;culturally insensitive&#8221; costumes on Halloween. There is no difference between the two.

NBC host Megyn Kelly issued an apology Tuesday for her <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/37498/megyn-kelly-blackface-okay-halloween-so-long-you-paul-bois">comments</a> concerning people dressing up as characters and celebrities of differing races on Halloween that critics decried as &#8220;racist.&#8221;
&#8220;I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry,&#8221; wrote Kelly in an internal email <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/megyn-kelly-apologizes-blackface-comments-1154466">obtained</a> by The Hollywood Reporter.
On Tuesday&#8217;s &#8220;Megyn Kelly Today,&#8221; Kelly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/37498/megyn-kelly-blackface-okay-halloween-so-long-you-paul-bois">questioned</a> why it was considered &#8220;racist&#8221; to dress up as a character or celebrity of a different race on Halloween. The host recalled a cast member from Bravo&#8217;s Real Housewives of New York getting into trouble for dressing up as legendary singer Diana Ross.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t see how that is racist on Halloween. Who doesn&#8217;t love Diana Ross? She wants to look like Diana Ross for one day, and I don&#8217;t know how that got racist on Halloween,&#8221; noted Kelly, implying that the costume was obviously done in homage, not mockery.
&#8220;What is racist?&#8221; asked the host. &#8220;Because truly you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface at Halloween or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid, that was okay as long as you were dressing up as like a character.&#8221;
Though Kelly indicated that she was not advocating for some sort of malicious &#8220;blackface,&#8221; but people &#8212; white and black &#8212; respectfully dressing up as characters and celebrities of differing races for the holiday, the comment was met with fierce <a href="http://&quot;I don't see how that is racist on Halloween,&quot; she said. &quot;Who doesn't love Diana Ross?&quot;">backlash</a>. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/37498/megyn-kelly-blackface-okay-halloween-so-long-you-paul-bois">Keyboard warriors</a> and celebrities like <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/megyn-kelly-apologizes-blackface-comments-1154466">Padma Lakshmi, Roy Wood Jr., and Patton Oswalt</a> were among the ridiculing voices.
After trending on Twitter (and not in a good way) for hours, Kelly offered an apology.
&#8220;One of the wonderful things about my job is that I get the chance to express and hear a lot of opinions. Today is one of those days where listening carefully to other points of view, including from friends and colleagues, is leading me to rethink my own views,&#8221; wrote the NBC host in an internal memo.
Kelly added that she &#8220;suggested that this seemed okay if done as part of this holiday where people have the chance to make themselves look like others.&#8221;
&#8220;I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry. The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep,&#8221; she wrote.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve never been a &#8216;pc&#8217; kind of person &#8212; but I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age. Particularly on race and ethnicity issues which, far from being healed, have been exacerbated in our politics over the past year. This is a time for more understanding, love, sensitivity and honor, and I want to be part of that. I look forward to continuing that discussion,&#8221; concluded the host.
In 2013, Kelly was deemed &#8220;racist&#8221; for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XYlJqf4dLI">telling</a> Fox News viewers that Santa Claus &#8220;just is white.&#8221;
&#8220;For you kids watching at home: Santa just is white,&#8221; said Kelly, later adding, &#8220;Just because it makes you feel uncomfortable doesn&#8217;t mean it has to change. You know, I mean, Jesus was a white man too.&#8221;

Megyn Kelly Issues Apology For So-Called ‘Blackface’ Halloween Comments

A virulently anti-Trump Halloween horror house in Alameda, California has captured the imagination of a neighborhood for its expressly mean-spirited political themes.
According to <a href="https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2018/10/23/alameda-halloween-display-takes-aim-trump-administration/">CBS Local</a>, the Halloween display titled &#8220;A Very Trump Halloween, Part Duh&#8221; was created by Alameda resident Daniel Balsam in an effort to spark a conversation by satirizing not only the Trump administration but Republicans like Ted Cruz.
&#8220;The intricate and details display includes what appears to be an immigrant child in a cage, tombstones for departed White House staff members, caricatures of members of the Trump administration and other satirical elements,&#8221; reports the outlet.
Another display features a screaming scarecrow labeled as &#8220;Ted Cruz&#8221; sitting next to a sign castigating the Texas senator as &#8220;The most punchable face in America.&#8221; Another display features President Trump as a cackling devil-like figure with a name tag that says, &#8220;Come with me my child into the heart of darkness itself!&#8221;
Daniel Balsam, the creator of the display, told reporters he wanted to send a message as frightening as the conservatives who inspired it. &#8220;The administration is basically the scariest monsters we can think of. That&#8217;s why we do the Halloween display like this,&#8221; explained Balsam.
The &#8220;Part Duh&#8221; in the title is no coincidence being that Balsam and his wife created a similar display last year. They had hoped Trump&#8217;s impeachment would prevent a second year; that did not happen.
&#8220;We were hoping he would be impeached between years one and two, but the material keeps on coming,&#8221; said Balsam.
Though Balsam hopes there will not a year three of the display, he is ready for 2019 should the time come.
&#8220;It could be worse,&#8221; said Balsam. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know if we&#8217;ve hit bottom.&#8221;
Neighbors told reporters they found the display amusing.
&#8220;Funny, but sad and true,&#8221; said area resident Kathleen Fennelly.
&#8220;I&#8217;m glad he decided to use his voice to share how he feels,&#8221; said neighbor Sean Cahill.
The visiting children also enjoy the anti-Trump spookfest. One little boy told reporters, &#8220;Not the real one! He&#8217;s just dressed up.&#8221;
&#8220;I would prefer this nightmare to be over. Like soon,&#8221; said Fennelly. &#8220;November is not too soon.&#8221;
Conservatives have also made their own version of a Halloween horror house regarding the Left, with some crossing the line into equally mean-spirited territory, such as the one that depicted Hillary Clinton as a <a href="https://www.nbcnewyork.com/on-air/as-seen-on/Hillary-Halloween-Display-Draws-Fire_New-York-397697291.html">gruesome severed head</a>.

Mean-Spirited Halloween Display Depicts Trump As A Cackling Devil

Megyn Kelly says &#8220;blackface&#8221; is appropriate on Halloween so long as the costume is of an actual character or person, according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/megyn-kelly-defends-wearing-blackface-for-halloween-2018-10?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=referral">Business Insider</a>.
Speaking on TODAY with her fellow panelists Melissa Rivers, Jenna Bush Hager, and guest host Jacob Soboroff, the former Fox News host commented on the controversy surrounding &#8220;Real Housewives of New York&#8221; star Luann de Lesseps, who actually darkened her skin last year as part of her Diana Ross costume.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t see how that is racist on Halloween,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Who doesn&#8217;t love Diana Ross?&#8221;
Kelly did not specify if she meant it was appropriate to simply cosplay as Diana Ross or to darken one&#8217;s skin as part of that cosplay; the latter being completely out-of-bounds whether the person is black or white.
Of course, Kelly&#8217;s fellow panelists did not see eye-to-eye on the issue and were mostly unanimous in their condemnation of blackface.
&#8220;I haven&#8217;t seen it, but it sounds pretty racist to me,&#8221; Soboroff said. Jenna Bush Hager concurred with a simple, &#8220;Me too.&#8221;
&#8220;But what is racist? You truly do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface at Halloween or a black person who puts on white face for Halloween,&#8221; Kelly asked her panel. &#8220;That was OK when I was a kid, as long as you were dressing like a character.&#8221;
When &#8220;Black Panther&#8221; came onto the scene earlier this year, the New York Times<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/27130/new-york-times-wonders-can-white-kids-dress-black-emily-zanotti"> openly pondered</a> on whether or not white Americans should bar their children from dressing up as the iconic character for Halloween.
&#8220;As parents, or even as the people creating costumes, we need to be very aware of what that says,&#8221; one professor told the NYT. &#8220;There&#8217;s not a whole lot of black superheroes, so this is a really important thing for black kids growing up.&#8221;
The thesis was later rebuked by none other than the star of &#8220;Black Panther,&#8221; Chadwick Boseman, who found the concept of white children dressing up as a black superhero endearing.
Cosmopolitan made the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/22666/sorry-cosmopolitan-dressing-moana-halloween-isnt-emily-zanotti">same argument</a> for Princess Moana of Disney.
Other times people get criticized for going &#8220;blackface&#8221; to Halloween when the costume had nothing to do with race whatsoever. Also last year, &#8220;Riverdale&#8221; actress Lili Reinhart <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/22602/war-halloween-riverdale-actress-apologizes-paul-bois">got blasted on Twitter </a>for wanting to dress up as a demon with all black skin:

Conversely, actor Donald Glover<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/35992/donald-glover-goes-whiteface-emmys-paul-bois"> dressed up in whiteface</a> for the show &#8220;Atlanta&#8221; and reprised the costume at the Golden Globes. Nobody blasted the costume as racist and many critics hailed it as a work of art.
Scores of people condemned Kelly as racist on Twitter.

Teenagers beware: you can be arrested in Chesapeake, Virginia for trick or treating. 
<a href="https://library.municode.com/va/chesapeake/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=PTIICOOR_CH46OFMIPR_ARTIINGE_S46-8TRTRAC">The city&#8217;s ordinance code</a> prohibits anyone over the age of 12 from trick or treating; a teenager could be charged with a misdemeanor and face a fine of $25 to $100 and/or up to six months in jail.
The code also prohibits trick or treating after 8:00 p.m.; those who violate the code &#8220;shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $10.00 nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than 30 days or both.&#8221;
The city&#8217;s website claims police &#8220;will focus on making sure the evening is safe for everyone&#8221; but won&#8217;t be &#8220;actively seeking out violations of the time or age limits.&#8221;
&#8220;[A] thirteen year old safely trick or treating with a younger sibling is not going to have any issues,&#8221; the statement said. &#8220;That same child taking pumpkins from porches and smashing them in the street more likely will.&#8221;
Evan Maguire, the Editorial Associate of the American Spectator and a native of Chesapeake, Virginia told the Daily Wire he was &#8220;upset&#8221; about the ordinance. &#8220;Having an unjust law on the books, even if it&#8217;s rarely enforced, is not right.&#8221;
Maguire said he reached out to the city and asked them the purpose for the rule. &#8220;This goes against our most fundamental freedoms as Americans and I find these penalties downright authoritarian,&#8221; he said in his message to the city. &#8220;How dare you prosecute kids over 12 for having fun, they&#8217;re still kids!&#8221;
