Actor Eric Dane, best known for his role on “Grey’s Anatomy,” has died at the age of 53, just one year after announcing his ALS diagnosis.
The star’s family confirmed his passing with a <a href="https://people.com/eric-dane-dead-greys-anatomy-star-was-53-11717334">statement</a> shared with People. “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,&#8221; it said. &#8220;He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.&#8221;
&#8220;Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
Dane, who was born in San Francisco, started acting on a whim and loved it. He got his start with guest roles on popular shows including “Saved by the Bell,” “The Wonder Years,” “Roseanne,” “Married With Children,” and “Silk Stalkings” before becoming a household name playing Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy,” on &#8220;Grey&#8217;s Anatomy&#8221; beginning in 2006. He also had a major role in “Euphoria.”
The actor was married to actress Rebecca Gayheart since 2004 and the pair had two children together. Gayheart had previously filed for divorce in 2018, but called it off in 2025, saying she and Dane were still “best of friends,” as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/euphoria-greys-anatomy-actor-diagnosed-with-als">reported</a>.
ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to loss of muscle control. Over time, individuals with ALS may lose the ability to speak, move, eat, and breathe independently.

Actor Eric Dane just shared an update on his ALS diagnosis, saying his health has been noticeably deteriorating and he fears his young daughters will grow up without a father.
“My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working,” the 52-year-old actor told Diane Sawyer during an interview with ABC&#8217;s “Good Morning America” on Monday. “I feel like maybe a couple more months and I won’t have my left hand either. It’s sobering.”
The “Grey’s Anatomy” alum was diagnosed with the degenerative disease in April after noticing symptoms including weakness in his right hand.  
“I didn’t really think anything of it at the time,” Dane told Sawyer. “I thought maybe I’d been texting too much or my hand was fatigued, but a few weeks later I noticed it got a little worse. So I went and saw a hand specialist, who sent me to another hand specialist. I went and saw a neurologist and the neurologist sent me to another neurologist and said, ‘This is way above my pay grade.&#8217;”

Dane also told Sawyer about the support he’s received from his wife of 14 years, Rebecca Gayheart. The actress filed for divorce in 2018 but called it off one month before Dane revealed his diagnosis. They remain friendly and share the responsibility of raising their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.
“We have managed to become better friends and better parents,” the actor said of Gayheart since receiving his diagnosis. “She is probably my biggest champion and my most stalwart supporter, and I lean on her.”
“In my heart, I don’t feel like this is the end for me,” Dane said during the interview. “I’m fighting as much as I can. There’s so much about it that’s out of my control.”
The actor also said he’s upset about his diagnosis because of losing his own father to suicide at the age of 7. “I’m angry because my father was taken from me when I was young, and now there’s a very good chance I’m going to be taken from my girls when they’re very young,” Dane said.

&#8220;I have been diagnosed with ALS,” the 52-year-old told People in an <a href="https://people.com/eric-dane-diagnosed-with-als-exclusive-11713179">interview</a>. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to [the] set of Euphoria next week,” he added. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
Dane has been married to actress Rebecca Gayheart since 2004. The couple has two children, the outlet noted: Billie Beatrice, aged 15, and Georgia Geraldine, who is 13. 
Gayheart previously filed for divorce in 2018 but called it off in March 2025. “We are best of friends. We are really close. We are great coparents,” the actress <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1415961/rebecca-gayheart-addresses-eric-dane-marriage-status">told</a> E! News earlier this week. “We really figured out the formula to staying a family and I think our kids are benefiting greatly from it and we are as well.”
“I think it’s important to not look at a relationship that ends as a failure. It’s just a season. It wasn’t a failure. It was a huge success,” Gayheart added without clarifying the status of their relationship right now. “We were married for, I mean, we are still married, but together for 15 years and we had two beautiful kids so I think that’s a successful relationship, and that’s how we look at it.”
The popular teen drama “Euphoria” is scheduled to begin production for season 3 next week. The Emmy Award-winning HBO series includes Dane as Cal Jacobs, patriarch of the Jacobs family. Dane became nationally known thanks to his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy,” on six seasons of the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.”

The statement came with the release of the first clip from the Peacock series “Anatomy of Lies,” which focuses on a colleague who worked with Finch and details how she would take things like so-called “puke breaks” and allegedly change her looks to carry on her cancer lie, the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/10/15/entertainment/greys-anatomy-writer-elisabeth-finch-would-shave-head-take-puke-breaks-to-come-off-as-seriously-ill-while-lying-about-having-cancer-former-colleague-claims/">New York Post</a> reported.
Finch &#8212; who started as a writer on the medical drama in 2014 &#8212; pretended to be sick with cancer for nearly a decade before her big lie was discovered and she was fired in 2022. Finch’s former colleague, writer and producer Andy Reaser, said even to this day he has trouble wrapping his head around the “betrayal” he experienced. &#8220;The thing is, it was so confusing. You have to move through eight years of interactions to even wrap your head around it, and I’m not even sure that I still fully have,&#8221; Reaser <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHhqoHPHcpY&amp;t=68s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in the clip</a>.
“She was showing up to work with a shaved head and a, you know, a greenish hue,” he added. “She looked like she lived in a microwave. She was eating these Saltines and drinking ginger ale and going to the bathroom to take puke breaks from her chemo. It’s just so hard to imagine that someone could commit that strongly to that and it seems so much harder to me than just doing your job well.&#8221;
The three-part docuseries hit Peacock on October 15.

“<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/greys-anatomy">Grey&#8217;s Anatomy</a>” actress Caterina Scorsone shared Monday the harrowing story of a recent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fire">house fire</a> that took the lives of her four pets. 
The Canadian <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">star</a> was thankfully able to save her three children, but recalled that she did so with just minutes to spare.
&#8220;While getting my kids ready for bed and finishing bath time, smoke began to seep up through the grout around the tub. When I looked down the hallway, a river of thick black smoke had already formed and was filling the house,&#8221; Scorsone posted to Instagram. She shares daughters Eliza, 10, Paloma &#8220;Pippa&#8221; Michaela, 6, and Lucky, 3, with ex-husband Rob Giles.
&#8220;I had about two minutes to get my three kids out of the house, and we escaped with less than shoes on our feet. But we got out. And for that, I am eternally grateful,&#8221; the “Grey’s Anatomy” star continued. &#8220;Heartbreakingly, we lost all four of our pets. We are still sitting with that loss, but we are lucky we got to love them at all.&#8221;
The post included photos of the fire’s aftermath and of the family’s lost pets.

The whole saga began with a real knee injury, Finch said, adding that instead of medication, she became &#8220;addicted&#8221; to the special attention and care that she received from the people around her while she was recovering. As she recovered, that attention began to slip away — and she was desperate for a way to get it back.
&#8220;I had no support and went back to my old maladaptive coping mechanism. I lied and made something up because I needed support and attention and that’s the way I went after it,&#8221; she said.
The lies <a href="https://ew.com/tv/greys-anatomy-writer-elisabeth-finch-admits-lies-medical-personal-history/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ultimately unraveled</a> when Finch met and married Jennifer Beyer, a registered nurse who uncovered her wife&#8217;s deception and demanded that she come clean to her friends and colleagues. Finch said that she agreed to tell some close friends and family the truth, but was not prepared to reveal the truth at work — and her refusal prompted Beyer to go around her, telling Disney and Shondaland what she had discovered.
That was when Ankler reporter Peter Kiefer — the same reporter who conducted the interview published Wednesday — called Finch to warn her that he was about to publish a report exposing her lies.
&#8220;From that point on, I was cut off pretty quickly from everything. I slowly started to see people blocking me on Instagram and other social media,&#8221; Finch said. &#8220;It was so universal that I don’t know if an email went out or everyone just got together and decided ‘no thank you.’”
Finch, who at one time shaved her head to fake the side effects of chemotherapy, made it clear that she understood her current situation was self-inflicted — but it still hurt. &#8220;I really miss it. I miss my fellow writers. It&#8217;s like a family and … one of the things that makes it so hard is that they did rally around a false narrative that I gave.&#8221;

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/television" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Actress</a> Kate Walsh was excited to explore the topic of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/abortion" target="_blank" rel="noopener">abortion</a> on the newest season of “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/greys-anatomy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grey’s Anatomy</a>,” she said during a recent interview. 
The 55-year-old portrays Dr. Addison Montgomery on the popular NBC drama, though she hasn’t been part of the cast for every season. Walsh was also part of the spinoff series “Private Practice.” After leaving for a while, the actress returned for season 18, believing it would be the final run.
&#8220;It&#8217;s an incredible platform to talk about social issues,&#8221; Walsh <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/kate-walsh-end-greys-anatomy-and-why-hard-tell-joke-modern-culture" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox News Digital. &#8220;I just think it keeps going because fans love it and it&#8217;s an infrastructure that works.” 
In season 19, Walsh again portrays an OB/GYN specializing in neonatal surgery. But now Dr. Montgomery also focuses on advocating for abortion following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

&#8220;When we were talking about me coming in this season, we discussed this whole storyline, and I was really into it,&#8221; the actress said. &#8220;Part of the magic of art &#8211; whether it&#8217;s great literature or television, or film, or painting &#8211; it connects us. That storytelling is more powerful than a lot of things you can do in the private sector. &#8230; It&#8217;s a connector.”
The “Grey’s Anatomy” star stressed the importance of bringing social issues into the storytelling, especially ones about abortion.
&#8220;It&#8217;s really important, I know for the show, to tell all sides to any story. And to really look at it from all different angles. And have empathy and connection,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I&#8217;m thrilled and happy to be participating.&#8221; 
&#8220;It&#8217;s a crazy time in the world and lots of change in the culture, and civil rights being taken away from people and I think it&#8217;s incredible to have a platform to explore it theatrically.&#8221;
During episode 5, “When I Get To the Border,” Dr. Montgomery and Dr. Bailey take a road trip to assist at an abortion clinic. One of the patients who lives in a neighboring state dies while trying to end her ectopic pregnancy. This leads to Bailey and Montgomery seeking to offer abortions at their home hospital.  
The show also hits on the topic during episode 3 when Dr. Montgomery helps a student procure an abortion procedure. Walsh indicated during an <a href="https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/2677715/kate-walsh-pro-choice-greys-anatomy-interview/">interview</a> with SheKnows that social issues like abortion would appear again in the second half of the season, which airs in 2023. 
The actress said she’s excited for viewers to “examine themselves and ask themselves questions about their own belief systems or their own values, and hopefully be entertained on top of all that.”

On Thursday, the pro-abortion TV drama “Grey’s Anatomy” ran a typically heavy-handed piece in which pro-lifers were portrayed as crazed and out of control .
A scene from the show depicted general surgeon Miranda Bailey, the former Chief of Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and Ob/Gyn Addison Montgomery as they drove up to the hospital.
Using the conservative state of Idaho as a launching pad for the dialogue, Bailey, who is driving, states, “Patients from Idaho have been flooding the place ever since the state restricted abortion.”
As the two women approach the parking lot, where scores of screaming pro-lifers await them, the voice-over states calmly, “The more experience we have, the less likely we are to be thrown when we encounter complications. We can shift gears more easily when it’s needed.”
The scene shows screaming protesters brandishing signs, then pounding on the windows of the car while Montgomery breathes, “Whoa.”
As the two women exit the car to enter the clinic, one pro-life demonstrator gets in Montgomery’s face and yells, “You’re stopping a beating heart. You’re terminating life and you know it. You’re killing babies.”
As the two women pass by, the pro-lifer yells after them, “You’re a baby-killer because abortion is murder. You took an oath to do no harm,” in a reference to the Hippocratic oath.

As far back as 2019, “Grey’s Anatomy” released an episode in which a young woman, Cassidy,  in the first trimester of her pregnancy, falls down her basement steps, then is chagrined to discover the baby survived the fall and acknowledges she ate herbs to induce an abortion.
Arriving at the emergency room where she will have to have her spleen removed, Cassidy speaks with Dr. Amelia Shepherd, who tells her that Dr. Owen Hunt can ask an ob-gyn to perform an abortion while she’s having her spleen removed. Hunt refuses, prompting this conversation, as <a href="https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/culture/karen-townsend/2019/11/08/pro-abortion-greys-anatomy-dont-force-poor-mom-give-birth">Newsbusters</a> reported:

Owen: You really overstepped in there. I&#8217;m a trauma surgeon. I don&#8217;t order abortions.
Amelia: You would have if the fetus hadn&#8217;t survived.
Owen: But it did.
Amelia: Owen, she&#8217;s eight weeks. She doesn&#8217;t need a full d&amp;c.
Owen: Exactly. It&#8217;s not emergent, but her internal injuries are. So I&#8217;m gonna deal with those, and then she can go see an ob.
Amelia: She seems pretty clear in her thinking and committed to her plan. Why not just give her the help she&#8217;s asking for?
Owen: Thank you, Amelia, for your consult.

But after the surgery, Amelia tells a nurse to give Cassidy two pills to abort the baby that will terminate the pregnancy, which prompts this conversation:

Amelia: She needed help that you wouldn&#8217;t give her.
Owen: You don&#8217;t work here.
Amelia: Well, from what I&#8217;ve heard, most of the people who do lack the skill and sensitivity that I have, so you could just say thank you. Owen, did you really want to force that poor mom to bring another human being onto the planet against her will, or did you refuse her an abortion because I wanted to help her have one?
