Nine years ago today, then-North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper signed a bill that repealed a law meant to keep gender-confused men out of women’s bathrooms, a policy he called “mean spirited” and “a stain” on the state’s reputation. 
While Cooper, currently running for U.S. Senate, now <a href="https://x.com/townhallcom/status/1949831222382715262?s=20">dodges</a> questions about his positions on transgender ideology, a new ad from the National Republican Senatorial Committee wants to make sure voters don’t forget how passionately he fought to allow transgender-identifying men in women’s bathrooms back in 2017. The ad, first shared with The Daily Wire, compiles Cooper’s numerous comments attacking North Carolina House Bill 2, a GOP-backed measure that required people to use the bathroom corresponding with their birth certificate at government buildings and public schools.  
“It&#8217;s important that we remove this horrible requirement that transgender people had to go to the restroom of their birth certificate,” Cooper previously said, as highlighted in the ad. “It is a stain on our great state&#8217;s reputation, and it&#8217;s got to be wiped out.” 
Cooper also called the provision “one of the most discriminatory laws in the country, and it is wrong, period” and that it “created a misguided, unworkable, and unnecessary requirement that individuals use the bathroom that matched the gender on their birth certificate.”
The Senate hopeful campaigned on repealing the measure, saying that he could “not tolerate it” being the law of the land in North Carolina.

&#8220;For nearly 40 years, Roy Cooper has fought to transition North Carolina to Democrats&#8217; woke agenda,&#8221; NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia told The Daily Wire. &#8220;Cooper promised the radical left he would ensure men could use women&#8217;s bathrooms, and he delivered for they/them.&#8221;  
The North Carolina bathroom bill, which was signed by GOP Governor Pat McCrory in 2016, ignited a firestorm after major corporations like Salesforce started <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/salesforces-marc-benioff-has-kicked-off-new-era-of-corporate-social-activism-1462201172">pressuring</a> the state over the law. Cooper’s gubernatorial deputy campaign manager told The Wall Street Journal that he “looked to Salesforce because he wanted them to know that this is not who North Carolina is, and that we are fighting against this discriminatory law.”
In response to the law, the NBA yanked the 2017 All-Star game out of Charlotte, because of “the climate created” by the legislation. 
After he was elected governor, Cooper signed a bill to repeal the bathroom bill, <a href="https://governor.nc.gov/documents/files/house-bill-2-repeal-fact-sheet/download">saying</a> that it “immediately removes mean-spirited restrictions on public facilities that mandate North Carolinians use the public facility matching the gender on their birth certificate.”
During his second term in office, Cooper would <a href="https://www.acluofnorthcarolina.org/press-releases/governor-cooper-vetoes-anti-transgender-legislation/">veto bills</a> to shield kids from transgender procedures on minors and keep boys of girls sports teams. 
Cooper is looking to succeed outgoing GOP Senator Thom Tillis. The GOP candidate is former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley. 
While he campaigned on the bathroom issue heavily while running for Congress, Cooper has rarely touched on transgender issues while on the Senate campaign trail. In August, he <a href="https://www.nrsc.org/uncategorized/wapo-he-became-governor-supporting-trans-rights-now-its-seen-as-a-liability-2025-08-18/">declined</a> an interview with the Washington Post on transgender issues.

Most Americans say the Supreme Court of the United States was right to block much of President Donald Trump’s sweeping emergency tariffs, a decision on an issue that has exposed sharp divisions among Republicans and prompted open celebration from Democrats.
A <a href="https://today.yougov.com/politics/articles/54148-most-americans-approve-of-the-supreme-court-striking-down-trumps-tariffs">YouGov</a> survey released Friday found that 60 percent of U.S. adults “strongly” or “somewhat” approve of the Court’s ruling, compared to 23 percent who disapprove and 17 percent who are unsure. Democrats backed the decision overwhelmingly at 88 percent, while 63 percent of independents also approved. Republicans were more divided: 43 percent disapproved, while 30 percent said they approve.
The ruling came Friday morning in a 6–3 decision against Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs on nearly all U.S. trading partners. Trump became the first president to rely on the nearly 50-year-old statute for such broad import taxes. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts concluded that IEEPA does not authorize the president’s tariff regime.
The Court declined to address whether previously collected tariffs must be refunded, leaving that question to lower courts. Justice Amy Coney Barrett, a Trump appointee who joined the majority, has previously warned that refunds could become “a mess,” a concern echoed in dissent by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, joined by Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas.
The <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/55693d60e4b06d83cf793431/t/6998a0b0febd02741b8399d0/1771610288746/Supreme+Court+Tariff+Ruling+IEEPA+Revenue+and+Potential+Refunds.pdf">Penn Wharton Budget Model</a> estimates the ruling could put as much as $175 billion in tariff revenue at risk, noting that importers typically have 180 days after goods are liquidated to file refund claims with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Reactions among Republican leaders ranged from constitutional praise to outright condemnation of the Court.
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) applauded the ruling, writing on <a href="https://x.com/SenRandPaul/status/2024875042912285053">X</a> that the Court “defended the Constitution” by rejecting the use of emergency powers to impose taxes. “Tariffs are taxes and the power to declare them belongs to the Congress,” Paul added, warning that the precedent would have empowered future administrations to govern “by decree.”

Vice President JD Vance, by contrast, <a href="https://x.com/JDVance/status/2024928034667545067">blasted</a> the ruling as judicial overreach. “This is lawlessness from the Court, plain and simple,” Vance wrote, arguing the decision would make it harder for presidents to protect American industries and supply chains.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) struck a more cautious tone, emphasizing that tariffs remain a viable policy tool. Thune <a href="https://x.com/LeaderJohnThune/status/2024909322388423065">said</a> Senate Republicans would continue working with the administration and House lawmakers to strengthen rural America, adding that Trump “has a wide range of other tariff powers and he will use them to defend American workers.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) similarly defended the president’s strategy, <a href="https://x.com/SpeakerJohnson/status/2024892242930884617">noting</a> that tariffs have “brought in billions of dollars and created immense leverage” for U.S. trade negotiations. “Congress and the Administration will determine the best path forward in the coming weeks,” Johnson said.
Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) sided firmly with the Court, <a href="https://x.com/SenMcConnell/status/2024909495734808714">calling</a> the use of IEEPA “illegal” and warning that tariffs raise costs for American consumers, a reality he said Kentuckians know “better than most.”
Democrats were far less divided. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) <a href="https://x.com/RepJeffries/status/2024869850980421739">called</a> the ruling “a big victory for the American people” and “another crushing defeat for the wannabe King.” Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) <a href="https://x.com/timkaine/status/2024878481557844330">said</a> similarly of Trump’s plan, “tariffs were illegal, dumb, and harmful to families, farms, and small businesses. Americans don’t want tariffs, they want lower costs.”
Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House Friday afternoon, called the decision “disappointing” and criticized Barrett and Justice Neil Gorsuch, both of whom he appointed. “I don’t want to say whether I regret nominating them,” Trump said. “I think their decision was terrible.” He added that he was “proud” of Kavanaugh, saying the justice’s “stock has gone so up.”
Within hours of the ruling, Trump announced he had signed a new executive order imposing a 10 percent global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows temporary tariffs of up to 15 percent for 150 days to address large trade deficits.
The White House’s official X account responded more bluntly, posting: “Keep Calm and Tariff On.”

For nearly a decade, pro-life voters have been the Republican Party’s most dependable force. We show up early, stay late, and keep the faith. We are not fair-weather voters, and we are not driven by trends. We are driven by a conviction that protecting babies in the womb is a moral minimum, and that the Republican Party understands this. We’ve held tight to the knowledge that the protection of unborn life is part of the GOP’s DNA.
But when <a href="https://sbaprolife.org/newsroom/press-releases/leading-pro-life-group-to-trump-gop-hyde-is-non-negotiable">our president tells GOP lawmakers</a> to be “flexible” on taxpayer funding of abortion to kowtow to Democrats, concern becomes unavoidable. And when a Trump-aligned consultant <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/5657986-anti-abortion-trump-mifepristone-review/">dismisses pro-life</a> voters as “a cheap date,” it confirms what many of us have heard: that parts of the Republican establishment, especially its consultant class, believe its most loyal voter base is disposable. Why else would the GOP’s top leader push to scrap one of the most fundamental pro-life policies, the Hyde Amendment? An amendment that has had bipartisan support until recently since 1973.
Republicans are signaling that nothing is off the table. That’s not pragmatism. It is a betrayal and political malpractice.
The Hyde Amendment is not some obscure legislative relic. Over its 50-year existence, Hyde has saved an estimated 2.6 million lives by ensuring that Americans are not forced to pay for abortions with their tax dollars. It has long functioned as the bedrock pro-life standard in federal policy — the clear line separating a government that tolerates abortion from one that actively funds it.
For decades, Hyde has also been a minimum requirement for Republican credibility. You could debate strategy or messaging — but you did not cave on Hyde.
Democrats understood Hyde’s power, which is why they worked so hard to undermine it. When Obamacare was drafted in 2010, it was deliberately designed to sidestep Hyde through an accounting gimmick that still forces taxpayers to subsidize elective abortions. Voters noticed. Fifteen House Democrats who supported that scheme lost their seats, and Republicans made major gains in battleground states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
The lesson was clear: voters do not like being tricked into funding abortion.
Now, astonishingly, some Republicans appear ready to repeat the Democrats’ mistake — this time against their own base.
Trump’s suggestion that Republicans be “flexible” on Hyde represents a sharp departure from his prior commitments. He repeatedly pledged to make Hyde permanent law, including in health care coverage. One of his first actions upon taking office last year was prioritizing the reversal of President Biden’s Hyde violations. And he stated unequivocally, “it is the policy of the United States, consistent with the Hyde Amendment, to end the forced use of federal taxpayer dollars to fund or promote elective abortion.”
That clarity mattered. It reassured pro-life voters that their support was not being taken for granted.
Republicans already struggle with turnout in midterms. Democrats show up. Republican voters often do not. And pro-life voters are value-driven, and when they feel demoralized or betrayed, they do not defect — they stay home. The GOP already has an intensity gap. Why slap your most loyal base in the face? If just 1–2 percent of pro-life voters had stayed home in 2024, Donald Trump would not be president. That is not a theory. That is math.
For the 2026 election cycle, we will contact 10.5 million voters across four key Senate battleground states and up to a dozen key House battlegrounds across the country, including 4.5 million visits to voters directly at their doorstep.
Abandoning Hyde now will shatter the trust of these voters. And the electoral consequences could be immediate.
Polling reinforces the danger. Data from PRRI shows that the voters who care most intensely about abortion are pro-life, not pro-choice. And the broader electorate is not clamoring for taxpayer-funded abortion. According to recent polling, six in ten Americans oppose forcing taxpayers to pay for it. The idea that defending Hyde alienates voters is a fiction sustained by consultants who confuse elite opinion with public reality. As a recent <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/conventional-wisdom-donald-trump-republican-rally-lawler-dannenfelser-johnson-11319523">Newsweek article reminded</a>, the Hyde Amendment “is polling better than anyone in Congressional leadership.”
You cannot expect enthusiasm while undermining the issue that animates your base. You cannot insult pro-lifers as a “cheap date” and expect them to mobilize on command. And you cannot abandon the single most important pro-life policy in federal law without paying a price.
The blowback would be far worse than what Democrats experienced in 2010. Then, voters punished a party that tried to evade Hyde. Now, they would punish a party that promised to defend it and then walk away.
Republicans still have a choice. President Trump and congressional leaders can reaffirm Hyde as non-negotiable and follow through on the commitments they made. Or they can learn the hard way that even the most loyal voters will not turn out for a party that no longer turns out for them.
Pro-lifers are not a “cheap date.” We are the backbone of the Republican coalition. We are the beating heart of this party. Ignore that reality, and the GOP will surely lose the midterms — not because we moved Left but because we stayed home.

Rep. Maria Salazar (R-FL) is leading an effort to prevent the deportation of an untold number of illegal aliens, offering them a legal pathway to remain in the United States with a bill that critics have called an amnesty proposal.
Called the Dignity Act, the legislation was introduced by Salazar and Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX). It would allow illegal aliens who have been in the country since 2021 to apply for a renewable seven-year legal status. Those deemed eligible would have to pass a background check and pay $7,000 in restitution over a seven-year period.
The bill would also offer legal status and a pathway to permanent residency — and eventually <a href="https://files.constantcontact.com/1849eea4801/e999781e-b1f3-477f-8f15-20c0d107f5c6.pdf">to citizenship</a> — for recipients of the Obama-era DACA program.
“We are the noblest nation on the face of the Earth. It is time for our immigration system to measure up,” Salazar wrote in Spanish <a href="https://x.com/RepMariaSalazar/status/1944799386107576444">on X</a>.
Salazar repeatedly claimed that the legislation is not an amnesty bill, arguing that it “allows certain long-term undocumented immigrants to earn legal status, without amnesty or a path to citizenship.”
The legislation has been derided by critics as an amnesty measure, however. Former Representative Matt Gaetz <a href="https://x.com/mattgaetz/status/1873399406206267535">warned</a> that &#8220;the &#8216;Dignity Act&#8217; includes amnesty for illegal immigrants,&#8221; while conservative lawyer Will Chamberlain charged that the legislation “is an amnesty bill for illegal aliens and would absolutely blow the door open on legal migration.”
Conservative organizations similarly warned that the legislation includes amnesty for illegal aliens. &#8220;There is no mistake about it, this is first and foremost an amnesty bill,&#8221; the Federation for American Immigration Reform <a href="https://www.fairus.org/legislation/congress/handful-house-republicans-unveil-new-amnesty-bill">wrote</a> when the legislation was introduced in a previous legislative session in 2022.
The Center for Immigration Studies similarly <a href="https://cis.org/Arthur/GOP-Outreach-Midwestern-Hispanics">blasted</a> the bill when Salazar introduced it in 2022, calling it “an amnesty for aliens illegally present in the United States” warning that “all amnesties simply encourage more illegal immigration, and Salazar’s proposal would be no different.”
Salazar touted the legislation in media appearances this week, claiming that some illegal aliens “deserve to stay in the United States.”
“There is another mass of people, most of them Hispanics, who have been here for more than five years contributing to the economy, who do not have a criminal record, and those people deserve some type of dignity and deserve to stay,” Salazar said in an appearance on Fox News.
Daily Wire host Matt Walsh shot back at Salazar on X, blasting her argument that some illegal aliens “deserve” to remain in America despite illegally entering the country.
“Deserve? If foreigners ‘deserve’ to disregard our laws, what laws do I as an American citizen deserve to disregard? Do I deserve to not pay my taxes? Ignore speed limits? Shoplift? Or is this an entitlement reserved only for foreign nationals? Please explain, Maria,” Walsh <a href="https://x.com/MattWalshBlog/status/1945470966055788710">charged</a>.
In addition to offering legal status to illegal aliens, the bill would also <a href="https://immigrationforum.org/article/the-dignity-act-of-2025-bill-summary/">expand</a> the number of migrants who could enter the country on various visas, mandate that employers use E-Verify to check the work authorization status of new hires, increase pay for Border Patrol agents, and grant new funding to upgrade ports of entry along the border.
Salazar is not the only Republican in support of the effort to offer legal status to illegal aliens, however. The act has also received the <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/migrants-immigration-maria-salazar-republicans-house-2099411">support</a> of Mario Rafael Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Mike Lawler (R-NY), Dan Newhouse (R-WA), David Valadao (R-CA), Mike Kelly (R-PA), Gabe Evans (R-CO), Marlin Stutzman (R-IN), Don Bacon (R-NE), and Young Kim (R-CA).
Salazar did not respond to a request for comment.

Former FBI Director James Comey called the Republican Party “white supremacist adjacent” on MSNBC.
Comey was interviewed over the weekend by MSNBC host and former Biden White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.
“One of the things that is happening now is that the Trump administration, of course, is testing the system in ways it hasn’t been tested before,” Psaki claimed. “In the law enforcement sense, do you think there are laws that should be put in place that would help better manage this, that aren’t in place now? I mean, are we equipped? Is the law enforcement system and the legal system equipped to deal with what we are seeing now?”
“Probably there could be changes at the margins, but in the main we have the tools; there are cultural impediments to doing this work,” Comey answered. “Let’s say you work in the FBI; you know that one of the two political parties is — let me put it nicely— white supremacist adjacent, at a minimum. And so why would you wanna throw your career on that side of the line and be summoned to Capitol Hill to be asked why you’re pursuing these innocent groups. And so we have a cultural impediment to working it effectively that should get more attention than it does.”

In April 2019, Comey <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/04/opinion/james-comey-trump-racism.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accused</a> President Trump of “stirring” racism for his own political benefit, writing in the New York Times, “America has long had a radioactive racist soup in the center of our national life. Comey also attacked the GOP by accusing the party of ignoring principles, although he followed by suggesting — without any irony at all and ignoring the actions of the Biden presidency, that a Democratic president might implement investigations of the GOP. He stated, “I know Republicans these days aren’t big in thinking about principle or precedent; they’re gonna be deeply sorry that disappears because someday there’ll be a Democratic president and there will be investigations of Republican office holders. If I’m them (sic), I sure would want these career people in place making sure that it’s done in the right way.”

A group of over 50 House Republicans on Friday introduced a resolution condemning the murder of Israeli embassy staffers Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky.
“This wasn’t just a tragedy, it was a targeted act of antisemitic terrorism carried out by a radical leftist,” Rep. Addison McDowell, who introduced the resolution, told The Daily Wire.
“Yaron and Sarah were murdered for being Jewish and for believing in peace. When a movement sympathizes with terrorists, we shouldn’t be surprised when that same movement produces actual terrorists.”
Elias Rodriguez, 30, of Chicago, was detained by police on suspicion of murdering Lischinsky, 30, and Milgrim, 26, on Wednesday night in Washington, D.C. The couple was shot at close range, and Milgrim was shot multiple times while crawling away, according to court documents. Cosponsors of the bill include heavy hitters like Reps. Lisa McClain (R-MI), Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), and Max Miller (R-OH), who is Jewish.
McDowell said he introduced the resolution to condemn growing antisemitism and to honor the lives of the slain couple.

“I want Congress to be on the record that it’s not just that antisemitism is evil, but also that the killer was part of an evil movement that seems to be growing in our country,” he said. “We can’t paper over that. We need to address it head on.”
The resolution, titled “Condemning Antisemitism and Remembering Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim,” identifies antisemitism as a “centuries-old form of hatred and discrimination that has led to immeasurable suffering, persecution, and loss of life, culminating most horrifically in the Holocaust, and continues to manifest in violence, vandalism, and policies targeting Jewish communities around the world.”
It cites the rise of antisemitic incidents in the United States, including attacks on synagogues, Jewish schools, museums, cultural centers, and individuals perceived as Jewish.

Milgrim, who grew up in the Kansas City suburbs, was a full-time employee at the embassy’s Department of Public Diplomacy. She received her Master of Arts at American University and was also a graduate of the University for Peace.
The “About” section on her LinkedIn profile says her “passion lies at the intersection of peacebuilding, religious engagement, and environmental work.”
Robert said his daughter spent multiple summers in Israel working with “peace-building groups” to mend the divide between Israelis and Arabs. He added that his daughter was supposed to travel to Israel on Sunday to meet Lischinsky&#8217;s family.

They were a beautiful couple who came to enjoy an evening in Washington’s cultural center.”
Lischinsky, 30, was a German-Israeli dual citizen and a devout evangelical Christian who immigrated to Israel at the age of 16 and served in the Israel Defense Forces. He studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and was fluent in German, Hebrew, English, and Japanese.
He moved to work as a political analyst at the Israeli embassy in 2022.

&#8220;The NRCC is offering to pick up the tab for any House Democrat eager to hang out with their new poster child in El Salvador, a confirmed illegal immigrant, MS-13 gang member, and alleged domestic abuser,&#8221; the statement said. &#8220;We just have one condition: Livestream the whole thing. Snap plenty of selfies with your MS-13 buddies — the same violent criminals you’re trying to reimport into American neighborhoods to rape, kill, and terrorize law-abiding citizens.&#8221;

Leftist Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner could be in trouble after he suggested last month that President Donald Trump and his supporters should be “punched in the face as hard as possible.&#8221; 
The Republican Party of Pennsylvania told The Daily Wire on Monday that it asked the Justice Department to investigate Krasner over his March suggestion that Trump and his supporters were “fascists” who needed to be “punched.” Krasner, a George Soros-backed district attorney who implements lax-on-crime policies, is running for a third term as Philadelphia’s top prosecutor. 
“Violence and threats are never acceptable, but they are particularly egregious when used as a political tool targeting the President of the United States of America and his supporters,” Pennsylvania GOP Chair Greg Rothman wrote to the Justice Department, according to a letter first shared with The Daily Wire. “The safety of President Trump, Republicans, and the integrity of our American republic rely on threats like District Attorney Krasner’s being investigated and, if appropriate, punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
The letter to Eastern District of Pennsylvania U.S. Attorney David Metcalf said that Krasner should be investigated for making a “potential criminal threat” against Trump during a March 25 <a href="https://www.cityandstatepa.com/personality/2025/03/q-philadelphia-district-attorney-larry-krasner/404028/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with City &amp; State Pennsylvania.
During that interview, Krasner compared Trump and his supporters to the Nazis. 
“Trump likes crime. Fascists like crime. Right-wing Republican MAGA people like crime and they like it because it gins up a crisis that doesn’t have to be, which allows them to scapegoat different groups of marginalized people so they can eliminate our rights. This is a very old playbook,” Krasner said, before adding that he knew a “hell of a lot” about World War II. 
“This is all stuff close to me, and I know exactly where we need to be with this one: loud, proud, standing up and in their faces,” he said. “These are fundamentally fascists, and it will not do us any good to try to appease them. They are bullies who need to be punched in the face as hard as possible, and that is the only way that all the people around us who are so frightened will understand they can stand up, too.”
Rothman wrote that those comments should be seen in the broader calls for violence against the Trump administration and Elon Musk and his efforts with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). 
“Violent threats against President Trump, Republicans, Mr. Musk, DOGE staffers, and others have been rampant across the country recently. The clear intent of those doing so is to aid those intending to commit acts of violence,” Rothman wrote. 
The letter cited promises from interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Ed Martin to investigate threats made toward Musk and members of DOGE, and urges Metcalf to take similar action. 
The last few months have seen a string of attacks targeting Tesla, including firebombings and acts of vandalism. “Political violence is never the answer — not in our communities, not in our campaigns, and certainly not from those sworn to uphold the law,” the Pennsylvania GOP told The Daily Wire. “The words of District Attorney Larry Krasner weren’t just reckless, they were dangerous. When the top prosecutor in Philadelphia suggests that the President of the United States and his supporters should be ‘punched in the face,’ it’s not just political rhetoric, it’s a threat.”
While Krasner easily won his last two general elections in the deep blue city, he currently faces a primary challenge from Patrick Dugan, a former judge who is running on a law and order platform.

&#8220;Their platform has to be rewritten whole cloth, and they don’t exactly know how they are going to wander in this wilderness for the next couple of years,&#8221; he added.
Democrats lost control of the Senate and the White House in last year&#8217;s election while they failed to crack the Republican majority in the House.
Johnson predicted that the amount of restructuring the Democrats need to do will blow past the 2026 midterms and into the 2028 presidential election.
&#8220;It’s not just gonna be a couple of years, though; it’s gonna be four years at least and then more because we are going to win — grow the House majority in 2026,&#8221; he said.
Republicans managed to retain control of the House in the 2024 election and currently have a 218-215 majority, giving leadership a slim margin in divisive votes.
There are two vacancies: one left by former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and another by former Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL), who is now Trump&#8217;s national security adviser.
Special congressional primaries in their districts are being <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/what-to-expect-in-floridas-special-congressional-primaries" target="_blank" rel="noopener">held</a> in Florida on Tuesday. The special general election has been scheduled for April 1.
Johnson acknowledged that, &#8220;Historically when the president takes the Oval Office, then his party then loses on average a number of seats in the House in that first midterm.&#8221;
Indeed, after Trump won the 2016 presidential election, the Republicans then lost command of the House in the 2018 midterms as Democrats <a href="https://www.axios.com/2018/11/07/full-list-2018-midterm-election-seats-flipped" target="_blank" rel="noopener">flipped 41 seats</a>.
However, Johnson argued, &#8220;That won&#8217;t happen this time around because there has been a sea change. And we&#8217;re going to deliver on this agenda and that begins now.&#8221;

Speaker Johnson Predicts House GOP Will Expand Majority In 2026 With Dems In ‘Disarray’

President-elect <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> promised on Friday that the Republican Party will &#8220;use its best efforts&#8221; to end Daylight Saving Time as most Americans favor putting a stop to changing the clocks twice a year.
Daylight Saving Time, the time nearly every state recognizes for eight months out of the year, has been in effect nationwide since 1966 when the Uniform Time Act was passed. Today, only two states — Arizona and Hawaii — don&#8217;t recognize DST. Legislation eliminating DST passed by Congress and signed into law by the president would likely mandate that every state go back to recognizing Standard Time throughout the entire year.
&#8220;The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation,&#8221; Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
The incoming Trump administration first signaled that ending DST was on the table earlier this month when the idea was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/doge-considers-ending-daylight-saving-time" target="_blank" rel="noopener">floated</a> by Trump&#8217;s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a new agency led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.
“Looks like the people want to abolish the annoying time changes!” Musk posted on X last month. Ramaswamy responded to Musk&#8217;s post, writing, “It’s inefficient &amp; easy to change.”

While a majority of Americans are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/daylight-saving-time-polling-shows-americans-utterly-divided-2023-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in favor of ending</a> the twice-per-year time change, there is disagreement on whether the country should recognize DST or Standard Time.
In 2022, the Senate unanimously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-senate-approves-bill-to-make-daylight-savings-time-permanent" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> a measure to make DST permanent. Trump said in 2019 that making DST permanent was &#8220;O.K.&#8221; with him. That move, however, wasn&#8217;t popular with many people who want to keep the clocks in Standard Time, which is the time usually recognized from November until March. Many doctors and scientists say that Standard Time is <a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/03/08/1235811935/daylight-saving-time-change-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">better</a> for people&#8217;s health because it is <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/nexstar_media_wire/4939267-why-experts-say-keeping-standard-time-is-undeniably-better-for-us/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more aligned</a> with the body&#8217;s internal clock and sleep cycle.
The Sunshine Protection Act, Sen. Marco Rubio&#8217;s bill to keep DST permanent that was passed by the Senate in 2022, was never taken up by the House. Rubio reintroduced the bill in 2023, but it remains stuck in committee.

Trump Vows To ‘Eliminate Daylight Saving Time’

Incoming GOP Freshman Tom Barrett celebrated the bipartisanship from members of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Congress</a> after he was able to take over the same office his great grandfather occupied nearly a century ago.
Earlier this week, the Republican &#8212; who flipped Michigan&#8217;s 7th Congressional District seat left open from Democrat Elissa Slotkin &#8212; sent out a letter to his new colleagues ahead of the freshmen lottery held in Congress that determines a new Representative&#8217;s office space, <a href="https://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/5002610-incoming-house-republican-tom-barrett-michigan/">The Hill</a> reported.
“I’ve shared with several of you that my great-grandfather, Louis Rabaut from Michigan, served here in Congress and was first elected 90 years ago in 1934,” the letter from Barrett, <a href="https://x.com/kv_swartz/status/1859585129259118764">posted on</a> social media, read.
“He died in office in 1961, long before I was born, so I never had the opportunity to meet him or ask him about his time in Congress, but his legacy is something my whole family is very proud of,” it added, noting that his family member occupied three different spaces in the Longworth House Office building.

The Republican Party is &#8220;now more diverse than it&#8217;s ever been in modern times,&#8221; NBC News National Political Correspondent Steve Kornacki explained on Sunday after President-elect <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> won re-election last week.
Kornacki <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/meet-press-november-10-2024-n1311007" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke</a> with &#8220;Meet The Press&#8221; moderator Kristen Welker about how data show minority groups have shifted toward the GOP over the past eight years while Democrats have attracted more white and college-educated voters.

Trump &#8220;did it by transforming the Republican Party. It is now more diverse than it&#8217;s ever been in modern times, and certainly much more than when Donald Trump first came on the scene eight years ago,&#8221; Kornacki said.
Using a screen behind him, which displayed election statistics, Kornacki went over how the results from &#8220;pre-Trump&#8221; in 2012 compared to now showed more voters under the age of 30, those with an income of less than $50,000, and people with no college degree gravitate to the GOP.
Kornacki discussed race and ethnicity, highlighting the growing &#8220;diversity&#8221; in the Republican Party.
&#8220;Again, pre-Trump versus now,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The black vote still overwhelmingly Democratic, but that&#8217;s a 15-point shift. It used to be 87 points for the Democrats, down to 72. How about this? You&#8217;ve heard a lot about it this week. This is what the numbers look like. Hispanic voters were 44 points Democratic before Donald Trump. Now, basically a toss-up constituency. And Asian Americans, a 32-point shift there as well. That&#8217;s what&#8217;s happened to the Republican Party since Donald Trump became its standard bearer eight years ago. This has been the movement.&#8221;
Kornacki explained how &#8220;the story is the opposite&#8221; for the Democratic Party, going over results showing that more white voters — though not a majority — are turning blue, as are college-educated voters and people earning more than $100,000. He also got into how Trump &#8220;swept&#8221; the swing states, highlighting Wisconsin as an example, and &#8220;pulled off&#8221; becoming the first Republican to win the popular vote in 20 years, pointing to the &#8220;giant strides&#8221; he makes in blue states like California.
Welker mentioned that the results are in and &#8220;they&#8217;re not going to change,&#8221; but she also noted that counting is still happening in some places.
&#8220;Yeah. I mean, if you remember from 2020, it took about a month till we got all the national popular vote,&#8221; Kornacki said. &#8220;And let me just show you, nationally here, one thing we&#8217;re waiting on, big — we know California is a Harris state. But as I said, still some votes to come: 75% is in. That means there are millions more votes just from California. And there are other states like this. A lot of it has to do with vote by mail, those ballots taking a long time for some of these states. So when you look at where the current popular vote stands, you know, you&#8217;ve got there — probably another 10 million or so, when all is said and done, are going to be added to this. This has been the story for a while in states like California. They take a very long time.&#8221;
