A former British Army reservist who faces criminal charges next week for silently praying near an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/abortion" target="_blank" rel="noopener">abortion</a> clinic in the U.K. last year warned his fellow countrymen that the fundamental freedoms he fought to protect are in danger.
&#8220;You might think this is a story from Orwell&#8217;s 1984 – but in fact this is happening in England in 2023,&#8221; Adam Smith-Connor said in a November 9 <a href="https://adf.uk/army-veteran-thoughtcrime/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news release</a>. &#8220;&#8216;Thoughtcrimes&#8217; shouldn&#8217;t be prosecuted in the UK.&#8221;
Smith-Connor, a father who spent 20 years in the British military and served in Afghanistan, said local council officers approached him when he silently prayed outside the BPAS abortion clinic in Bournemouth, England, in November 2022.
Bodycam footage shows Smith-Connor, 50, interacting with authorities who questioned &#8220;the nature of his prayer.&#8221;
He told the officers he was praying for the men and women who were considering abortion after going through his own experience more than two decades ago when he arranged and paid for his girlfriend to abort their son.
But authorities told him he violated a local &#8220;buffer zone&#8221; ordinance known as a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), which Smith-Connor&#8217;s attorneys said forbids &#8220;&#8216;expression of approval or disapproval&#8217; of abortion, including through prayer.&#8221;

A Council spokesperson <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12729653/army-veteran-charged-praying-dead-son-abortion-clinic-blasts-police-prosecuting-thoughtcrimes.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Daily Mail that Smith-Connor was charged with breaching a term of prohibition 4g of the PSPO on August 9.

&#8220;The allegations are that on 24th November 2022 Mr Smith-Connor failed without reasonable excuse to comply with a requirement of the Public Spaces Protection Order (OPHIR ROAD AND SURROUNDING AREA) 2022, in that he failed to leave the required area when asked by an Authorised Officer,&#8221; a statement read.
&#8220;Due to the ongoing legal proceedings, the Council is unable to make a further statement in relation to this matter,&#8221; the statement added.
Smith-Connor&#8217;s legal defense said authorities issued a notice of penalty fine for only praying silently in his mind for a few minutes while his back was turned away from the clinic.
The notice said he was being charged for &#8220;praying for his deceased son,&#8221; according to the legal counsel.
Smith-Connor pleaded not guilty during an August hearing at Poole Magistrates&#8217; Court.
&#8220;Britain has a history of upholding human rights we can be proud of, and a respect for freedom that I fought to uphold when I served this country for twenty years in the army reserves, including in Afghanistan,&#8221; Smith-Connor said. &#8220;I fought to defend our freedoms – but now my own freedom of thought is in jeopardy.&#8221;
&#8220;How can we send our troops out to potentially make the ultimate sacrifice when back home, police are arresting people for peacefully practicing their faith and offering charitable support to families in crisis?&#8221; he added.
Smith-Connor&#8217;s warning about the so-called Orwellian tactics arising in the United Kingdom comes days before the nation celebrates its Remembrance Sunday, where citizens honor the deceased veterans who fought to uphold their freedoms.
&#8220;Sadly, today, we are in danger of dismantling the values for which they died,&#8221; Smith-Connor said.
Smith-Connor is set to face a November 16 trial.
Jeremiah Igunnubole, legal counsel for ADF UK, the organization supporting Smith-Connor&#8217;s legal defense, said the validity of the charges raises significant questions about democratic accountability, considering the council both drafted PSPO and put themselves in the position of prosecuting those who violate the order.
&#8220;If Adam had been thinking about an issue other than abortion – for example, climate change – then there would be no issue raised here,&#8221; Igunnubole said.
Igunnubole said his client is one of several individuals who face penalties for &#8220;thoughtcrimes&#8221; in the U.K.
Last year, authorities <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/praying-woman-arrested-for-breaking-public-space-order-outside-u-k-abortion-clinic?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=dwbrand" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrested</a> Isabel Vaughan-Spruce, a 45-year-old charity volunteer, for allegedly breaking a temporary PSPO on four separate occasions after praying outside a BPAS abortion clinic in Kings Norton, Birmingham, last December.
The arrest follows two other incidents within the last two years where local police told a praying woman in Southern England to leave for standing outside the local censorship zone, and a grandmother from Liverpool who was arrested and fined for praying silently near an abortion facility on a walk during the COVID lockdown.

In the modern era, when up is down and left is right, when everything George Orwell predicted has come true, of course we&#8217;re redefining words to mean whatever the woke leftists want them to mean.
The Cambridge Dictionary is the latest, having decided to redefine the words “man” and “woman.&#8221;
A woman is now “an adult who lives and identifies as female though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth.” And of course a man is “an adult who lives and identifies as male though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth.”
Social media, as one could predict, exploded.
&#8220;Cambridge Dictionary decided it&#8217;s no longer aligned with reality,&#8221; one user wrote.

A Cambridge Dictionary spokesman <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11533295/Cambridge-Dictionary-accused-kowtowing-woke-activists-updating-definition-woman.html">told</a> the Daily Mail that the definitions were added in October.
“They carefully studied usage patterns of the word ‘woman’ and concluded that this definition is one that learners of English should be aware of to support their understanding of how the language is used,” a statement read. “The first definition at the entry for ‘woman’ remains unchanged and continues to be ‘an adult female human being.&#8217;”
Free Speech Union founder Toby Young <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11533295/Cambridge-Dictionary-accused-kowtowing-woke-activists-updating-definition-woman.html">told</a> the Mail that the dictionary is going down a &#8220;slippery slope.&#8221;
&#8220;It’s disappointing to see identity politics creeping into the way a dictionary defines words,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The claim that these supplementary definitions of “woman” and “man” are based on “carefully studied usage patterns” doesn’t seem plausible. Who, apart from a few woke activists, define &#8216;woman&#8217; and &#8216;man&#8217; this way?&#8221;
Meanwhile, Dictionary.com on Tuesday announced that &#8220;woman&#8221; is the 2022 Word of the Year after searches for the word soared by more than 1,400%.
The website, the top online English-language educational dictionary, defines &#8220;woman&#8221; as &#8220;an adult female person.&#8221;
&#8220;This year, the very matter of the definition of the word &#8216;woman&#8217; was at the center of so many consequential moments, discussions, and decisions in our society,&#8221; John Kelly, senior director of editorial at Dictionary.com, said in a statement.
&#8220;Our selection of &#8216;woman&#8217; as the Word of the Year for 2022—and how the word is defined, who is included in that definition, who the word applies and belongs to—highlights how important the work of a dictionary is, and how dictionaries can impact people&#8217;s lives,&#8221; he said.

War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. Biden is doing great.
George Orwell’s magnum opus, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/shop/products/1984-by-george-orwell">Nineteen Eighty-Four</a>, features the dangers of a totalitarian government that goes beyond mere exertion of force into redefining the nature of truth itself. In the regime of Big Brother, mere compliance with governmental edicts is not enough — one must submit his heart, soul, mind, and strength to every opinion, policy, and action that the state pursues.
Rather than treating the dystopian novel as a warning, the Biden administration has leveraged its premise as an instruction manual for key practices — to cover its tracks, to grab more power, and to force irrational policies upon the American people.
Disinformation Governance Board
Winston Smith, the protagonist of Nineteen Eighty-Four, finds himself employed at the Ministry of Truth — a government agency tasked with charting official narratives transmitted to the people via propaganda. Smith is charged with rewriting past newspapers to correspond with the party’s worldview before incinerating any documents that may conflict with the new version.
Earlier this year, the Biden administration <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/secretary-mayorkas-defends-disinformation-governance-board-from-ministry-of-truth-accusations">launched</a> the Disinformation Governance Board — an entity at the Department of Homeland Security tasked with combating misinformation and dictating truth to the masses. Especially after Nina Jankowicz, an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-republicans-demand-answers-from-nina-jankowicz-on-new-disinformation-governance-board">overt partisan</a>, was tapped to lead the board, conservatives blasted the Biden administration for launching its very own Ministry of Truth.
“I confess, I at first thought this announcement was satire. Surely, no American administration would ever use the power of government to sit in judgment on the First Amendment speech of its own citizens,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trying-to-intentionally-tank-for-the-number-one-pick-in-the-draft-conservatives-rip-bidens-disinformation-governance-board">said</a> in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “Sadly, I was mistaken. Rather than protecting our border or the American homeland, you have chosen to make policing Americans’ speech your priority. This new board is most certainly unconstitutional and should be dissolved immediately.”
Although the Disinformation Governance Board was eventually forced to stand down — a development the White House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-white-house-press-sec-claims-disinformation-mischaracterizations-tanked-disinformation-board">blamed on disinformation</a> — social media companies have also taken the mantle of becoming the arbiters of truth. One day after the Disinformation Governance Board was disbanded, Twitter announced a new round of policies geared toward issuing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/theyre-going-to-get-their-ministry-of-truth-one-way-or-the-other-twitter-announces-crisis-misinformation-policy">warning labels</a> on “false coverage” of the war in Ukraine.
Beyond the Department of Homeland Security, the Biden administration has repeatedly signaled to allies in Silicon Valley that it expects help to push official narratives. Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/psaki-if-you-post-misinformation-online-you-should-be-banned-from-all-social-media-platforms">said</a> last year that social media users “shouldn’t be banned from one platform and not others” if they post “misinformation online.”
In even more Orwellian parallels, Twitter has censored <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/twitter-suspends-conservative-pundit-allie-beth-stuckey-for-stating-that-transgender-weightlifter-is-a-man">conservative commentators</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nypost-remains-locked-out-of-twitter-a-week-after-publishing-bombshell-hunter-biden-report">entire news outlets</a> for “thoughtcrimes” such as calling transgender athletes by their true sex or publishing reports about Hunter Biden’s laptop weeks before the general election.
Birthing People
Among Big Brother’s most prioritized projects in Nineteen Eighty-Four was the creation and promulgation of “newspeak” — an altered version of the English language meant to recategorize thought such that dissent from the government is impossible.
As Daily Wire host Matt Walsh <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/videos/what-is-a-woman">recently discovered</a>, officials at the highest level of government are incapable of defining the term “woman” — despite their purportedly robust commitment to advancing women’s rights. Indeed, many progressives — including members of the Biden administration — have imported the assumptions of radical gender ideology into the word, which used to simply mean “adult human female.”
Last year, President Biden’s $6 trillion budget proposal allocated funds to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-budget-proposal-refers-to-mothers-as-birthing-people">address</a> the “high rate of maternal mortality and race-based disparities in outcomes among birthing people.” The term, which moved from the most radical corners of academia to the halls of the White House in a matter of months, is used to clarify — or, more accurately, obfuscate — that women who still have their uteruses despite hormones and surgeries can give birth.
“When we talk about birthing people, we’re being inclusive. It’s that simple,” pro-abortion group NARAL explained last year. “We use gender-neutral language when talking about pregnancy, because it’s not just cis-gender women that can get pregnant and give birth.”
As with the government in Nineteen Eighty-Four, the term “birthing people” is not meant to forward a rational argument for the case that men can get pregnant. Rather, it is meant to reframe thought and block dissent with radical gender ideology.
What Is A Recession?
In June, progressives failed to define the term “woman.” In July, progressives are trying to redefine the term “recession.”
All signs point to the United States economy soon meeting the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-does-preemptive-damage-control-as-economy-heads-toward-recession">rule-of-thumb definition</a> of a recession, since economic growth appeared to have been negative in the first and second quarters of this year as <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/walmart-sales-plummet-as-consumers-tighten-their-budgets">consumer spending</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/business-leaders-report-first-output-contraction-since-2020-as-consumers-get-pinched-by-inflation">business activity</a> begin to decline. Rather than answering for the poor economy — which had been recovering until soaring inflation, persistent supply chain issues, and policies against oil and gas production — the Biden administration is devoting its energies to wordplay.
“While some maintain that two consecutive quarters of falling real GDP constitute a recession, that is neither the official definition nor the way economists evaluate the state of the business cycle,” the White House said in a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/cea/written-materials/2022/07/21/how-do-economists-determine-whether-the-economy-is-in-a-recession/">blog post</a>. “Instead, both official determinations of recessions and economists’ assessment of economic activity are based on a holistic look at the data — including the labor market, consumer and business spending, industrial production, and incomes.”
In a particularly Orwellian imitation, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/yellen-were-not-in-a-recession-were-in-a-transition-in-which-growth-is-slowing">argued</a> that the United States is not in a “recession,” but rather in a “transition in which growth is slowing” — because in Biden’s America, even the economy transitions instead of being identified by its current state.
“We need to be growing at a steady and sustainable pace,” Yellen said, even though growth is currently negative. “So there is a slowdown and businesses can see that and that’s appropriate, given that people now have jobs and we have a strong labor market.”
Rationing
One of Winston Smith’s tasks at the Ministry of Truth was the fabrication of a newspaper to support Big Brother cutting chocolate rations from 30 grams per week to 20 grams per week. Yet within one day of the policy, the propaganda machine convinced the people that Big Brother had actually raised rations to 20 grams per week — leading to demonstrations of thanksgiving.
In the same manner, President Biden <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-takes-victory-lap-as-gas-prices-inch-downward-still-nearly-twice-as-high-since-his-first-day">took a victory lap</a> after gas prices started to decline from their heights of more than $5.00 per gallon. Despite arguing that his “actions are working” and “prices are coming down” — especially due to his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/stunning-amount-of-oil-released-by-biden-found-its-way-to-china-other-countries">steady release</a> of strategic reserve oil, some of which <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-admin-sold-nearly-1-million-barrels-of-oil-to-chinese-state-owned-company-tied-to-hunter-biden">found its way</a> to a Chinese company with links to Hunter Biden — he failed to mention that gas was only $2.38 per gallon on the day he assumed office. 
Jared Bernstein, a member of Biden’s Council of Economic Advisers, <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2022/07/19/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-and-cea-member-jared-bernstein/">added</a> that the administration’s policies have produced “a bit of breathing room in making ends meet” as the market observes “the fastest decline in retail gas prices in a decade.”
In the same manner, the White House has <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2022/04/19/remarks-by-president-biden-on-investments-in-the-bipartisan-infrastructure-law/">repeatedly argued</a> that its first budget “cut the federal deficit” — the difference between government spending and government revenue — by $350 billion, while alleging that the second proposal will slash $1.3 trillion from the deficit. What is missing in this equation, which even <a href="https://www.factcheck.org/2022/04/bidens-deficit-spin/">left-wing fact-checkers</a> have called “misleading,” is the fact that deficits reached record highs in 2020 and 2021 because of stimulus packages meant to address the lockdown-induced recession. 
With his most recent budget, President Biden will be presiding over a $1.2 trillion deficit — far higher than any deficit seen before COVID or during the second term of President Barack Obama.

History, as we all know, tends to favor the victors of wars. This in part explains why two of the greatest architects of 20th Century genocide, Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler, have been treated very differently in the more than 50 years since they held power. Hitler is so universally reviled that he canceled his own first name. Stalin on the other hand is presented as a more complicated and nuanced figure. It’s not just that Stalin’s Soviet Union defeated Hitler and Germany (with Allied help), Uncle Joe also had powerful and smart friends in the West, high among them was the celebrated Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw.
In fairness to Shaw, at least in his younger days, the Soviet Union, and before it, Russia in general held a heady appeal to Western artists. Even prior to the Bolsheviks, the pump had already been primed, in theater by the plays of Chekov and the directing style of Stanislavski, and in literature more generally, Tolstoy, who at the start of the 20th Century was wildly praised and mimicked. So it was natural for Shaw, himself a <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/287405140_BERNARD_SHAW_AND_POLITICS">socialist</a> with progressive ideas, to see the USSR not as a red menace, but as a hope for humanity.
Shaw’s work, notably in “Pygmalion” and “Man and Superman,” deals with political and cultural issues, especially surrounding class and gender. Of humble birth himself, Shaw distrusts the hierarchical system of England and Ireland, unlike his contemporary, Oscar Wilde, born nearby him in Dublin, Shaw was not the manor born. We can see why this storyteller of working-class stock took a shine to the notion of a workers&#8217; paradise. 
In “The Revolutionist&#8217;s Handbook,” Shaw writes “Now we have yet to see the man, who, having any practical experience of Proletarian Democracy, has any belief in its capacity for solving great political problems or even for doing ordinary parochial work intelligently and economically.” So, he was not a huge fan of democracy. Shaw preferred the idea of being ruled by perfect systems. And he thought the Soviet Union was well on its way to achieving just that.
Had Shaw been ignorant of the atrocities committed by Stalin, we might easily forgive him for falling into the soft lies and propaganda of the Soviet state. But by the 1940s the scale and scope of Stalin&#8217;s crimes were becoming known, yet Shaw <a href="https://fee.org/articles/george-bernard-shaw-was-so-enamored-with-socialism-he-advocated-genocide-to-advance-it/">stayed</a> a stalwart ally. So much so, in fact, that anti-authoritarian (and <a href="https://thewire.in/books/remembering-george-orwell-the-socialist">socialist</a>) author George Orwell, acting as an informant to the British government, would <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/27929796">name</a> Shaw as “reliably pro Russia on all major issues.” Orwell named names. 
So how was it that Shaw, and not just him, but so many of the brightest artists and writers of his time, were willing to look past murder and even genocide? We ask this not in the spirit of canceling George Bernard Shaw, but of truly understanding what led him to this dark compromise.
There is a tendency in our time to imagine that the first 2 decades of the 21st Century saw the fastest and most profound technological expansion in history. Yet, the opening 20 years of the 20th Century might have us beat in terms of the structural changes to physical and cultural spaces. The wide adoption of the light bulb, automobiles, planes, the phonograph, and moving pictures transformed the plastic of reality. The bright, shiny London of young Bertie Wooster in the 1920s was nothing like the dark and murky, gas-lit city of Sherlock Holmes just a few decades before. Shaw experienced both. 
It is easy to see why he and his contemporaries imagined that material needs could soon be furnished without the punishing demands put upon a capitalist labor force. In Stalin, Shaw saw a true man of the age. He didn’t fiddle around with legislatures, courts, or markets, he announced five-year plans and got them done. Shaw would go to his death in 1950 truly believing that, in the long run, the unfortunate deaths of millions would be for the common good. Above the bed where he died was a framed picture of Josef Stalin. 
Before we are too harsh in our historical judgment of Shaw, we ought to take a square look at his descendants in the entertainment industry today. Hollywood has become famously beholden to a China that is credibly accused of genocide and has committed an ocean of human rights abuses. This fealty to China might be more motivated by money than Shaw&#8217;s love of Soviet Communism, but it is also about control. This is true with regard to the progressive or “woke” messaging so pervasive in Hollywood’s products, but also a general insistence on obedience to the state, so long as it is controlled by Democrats.
In some ways, our country’s relationship to China is very similar to Shaw’s with the Soviet Union. We accept inconvenient tragedy because in the grand scheme of things we need what China is offering, and trust that in the end, everyone will benefit. Even our own technology advancements echo the Irish playwright. Just as Shaw had his doubts about the efficacy of proletarian democracy, so we sometimes wonder if algorithms can produce better, more humane results than human voices and votes.
Beware the man whether politician or playwright who offers perfection. Their systems are never quite complete, even though they promise they will be soon. That was the trap that Shaw fell into in his adoration of Stalin. We can criticize that decision if we choose to, but far more important is that we learn from it, and not fall into utopian traps ourselves.

George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley ripped into the Biden Administration&#8217;s plan to address &#8220;disinformation&#8221; with a new government board that will fall under the Department of Homeland Security.

Turley, who once served as a witness in former President Donald Trump&#8217;s first impeachment trial, also referenced former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton&#8217;s call for Europe to impose restrictions on speech if the United States would not do so, adding, &#8220;Now Clinton is looking to the Europeans to censor social media while Biden is turning to a type of Ministry of Truth.&#8221;
Clinton, several days earlier, had tweeted, &#8220;For too long, tech platforms have amplified disinformation and extremism with no accountability. The EU is poised to do something about it. I urge our transatlantic allies to push the Digital Services Act across the finish line and bolster global democracy before it&#8217;s too late.&#8221;
She followed that up with a congratulatory &#8220;They got it done!&#8221;

Turley quickly pivoted back to the Biden Administration, <a href="https://twitter.com/JonathanTurley/status/1519723838220775424">adding</a>, &#8220;&#8230;The Disinformation Governance Board needs a catchy slogan. How about &#8216;The choice for mankind lies between freedom and happiness and for the great bulk of mankind, happiness is better.&#8217; or perhaps &#8216;We do not merely destroy our enemies; we change them.&#8217; ― George Orwell, 1984.&#8221;
&#8220;&#8230;Homeland Security already has a public relations staff that answers questions as well as dozens of offices that release public information. Yet, Secretary Mayorkas wants an actual Disinformation Governance Board to put an imprimatur on what is truth and what is false,&#8221; he <a href="https://twitter.com/JonathanTurley/status/1519726540665327616">continued</a>.
Turley went on to note one major point of concern — that the Executive Branch was involving itself in the regulation of free speech — and he argued that would make it &#8220;a matter for legislative debate on the use of public funds for such a purpose.&#8221;
&#8220;On final note, it may be impossible to come up with a more Orwellian title other than the Ministry of Truth,&#8221; Turley <a href="https://twitter.com/JonathanTurley/status/1519729209178046464">added</a>. &#8220;Whoever decided to combine Disinformation with Governance wins the 2022 Doublespeak award.&#8221;
Turley concluded with a clip from &#8220;Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,&#8221; adding, &#8220;Citizens can now chose between lies and truth under the watchful eye of the Biden Administration&#8217;s Disinformation Governance Board. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) responded to Democrat President Joe Biden&#8217;s new Disinformation Governance Board in an exclusive statement to The Daily Wire on Thursday, saying that the move was &#8220;Orwellian.&#8221;
The newly-created Disinformation Governance Board, which was <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/national-security/3470473-dhs-disinformation-board-to-tackle-russia-migrant-smugglers/">announced</a> on Wednesday, is being formed under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and will focused on alleged disinformation coming out of Russia and other places.
&#8220;Leave it to Democrats to think free speech is the problem and more government is the solution,&#8221; McCarthy said in an exclusive statement to The Daily Wire. &#8220;The notion that the same party that spent four years promoting the Russia collusion hoax, suppressed the Hunter Biden laptop story, and equated parents to domestic terrorists believes it has the credibility to tell Americans what is true is laughable.&#8221;
&#8220;And it is telling that the person who would run Biden’s Orwellian Disinformation Governance Board is a political activist who has a long history of falling for and spreading disinformation,&#8221; McCarthy continued. &#8220;It is easy to imagine this person abusing the term ‘disinformation’ to suppress facts and spin away inconvenient truths about the administration’s many failures, including their failures to secure the border. The idea that the federal government should control speech sounds uncomfortably close to the Thought Police. Biden must immediately abandon his plan to create a modern-day Ministry of Truth.&#8221;
The person that Biden has picked to lead the new initiative is Nina Jankowicz, who reportedly has her own history of spreading disinformation online as she appears to have <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/04/28/wh-pick-for-disinformation-board-spread-hunter-biden-laptop-lie/?utm_source=twitter_sitebuttons&amp;utm_medium=site%20buttons&amp;utm_campaign=site%20buttons">sought</a> to discredit the explosive Hunter Biden laptop story that erupted weeks before the 2020 presidential election.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/white-house-defends-dhs-disinformation-board-not-sure-who-opposes-that-effort">defended</a> the new effort when asked about the matter on Thursday, saying, &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure who opposes that effort.&#8221;

In an ironic twist to beat all ironic twists, “1984,” George Orwell’s dystopian sci-fi tale that warns of the dangers of revising history and rewriting books for ideological ends is, itself, getting a feminist re-write. With approval from the Orwell estate, it will be re-told from a woman’s perspective.
As first reported in <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2021/dec/07/feminist-retelling-of-nineteen-eighty-four-approved-by-orwells-estate?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other">The Guardian</a>, the new narrative will be told from the point of view of Julia, the love interest of Orwell’s main character, Winston Smith, who in the 1949 novel works at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history to suit the authoritarian government’s propaganda purposes. Titled “Julia,” the book comes from American author Sandra Newman, whose past work has been nominated for a Folio Prize and the British Baileys Women&#8217;s Prize for Fiction.
Neman’s publisher Granta told The Guardian that as a protagonist, Julia “understands” Orwell’s fictional world of Oceania “far better than Winston and is essentially happy with her life,” adding that Orwell’s son, Richard Blair, “has been consulted and approves of the project.”
According to <a href="https://variety.com/2021/film/global/1984-george-orwell-sandra-newman-julia-feminist-1235128127/">Variety</a>, multiple Hollywood studios are already vying for the adaptation rights. “&#8230; [W]hile film and TV rights won’t be optioned for several months yet,” the outlet reports, “there is already tremendous interest in ‘Julia.’”
The literary executor of Orwell’s estate, Bill Hamilton, said he is “delighted” by the “imaginative” retelling. “Two of the unanswered questions in Orwell’s novel are what Julia sees in Winston, and how she has navigated her way through the party hierarchy,” he said. “Sandra gets under the skin of Big Brother’s world in a completely convincing way which is both true to the original but also gives a dramatically different narrative to stand alongside the original. The millions of readers who have been brought up with Orwell’s ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four,’ will find this a provocative and satisfying companion.”
As The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sign-of-the-times-orwells-dystopian-novel-1984-soars-to-top-of-amazons-list-of-best-selling-books">reported</a> in January, Orwell’s classic has experienced renewed popularity in the age of increasing government power seizure and major news organization scandals, becoming the best-selling book on Amazon that month.
One particular passage has been repeatedly quoted by social media users over the past year, describing life under the authoritarian ruler, Big Brother:

Jesse James, a contributor at <a href="https://notthebee.com/article/theyre-rewriting-1984-to-fall-in-line-with-feminist-orthodoxyyes-theyre-actually-doing-this-with-no-sense-of-irony-whatsoever-no-its-not-a-joke">Not the Bee</a>, said of the new feminist retelling, “We have reached the stage of political discourse where they&#8217;ve actually started to subject Orwell himself to Orwellianism.”
Finished James, “For whom is [the feminist version of ‘1984’] intended? Fans of the original will be at best nonplussed by it. Latter-day woke Millennials have probably never even read ‘1984’ and so will have no cultural frame of reference for it.”

According to memos sent to department heads at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Biden administration is ordering U.S. immigration enforcement agencies to stop using terms like “alien,” “illegal alien,” and “assimilation” when referring to immigrants.
The term “alien” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/joe-biden-bans-terms-illegal-alien-assimilation-to-make-u-s-seem-more-inclusive">will now be</a> “noncitizen or migrant,” “illegal” will be “undocumented,” and “assimilation” will be “integration.”
“As the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, we set a tone and example for our country and partners across the world,” Troy Miller, CBP’s top official, said in his memo, as reported by <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/illegal-alien-assimilation/2021/04/19/9a2f878e-9ebc-11eb-b7a8-014b14aeb9e4_story.html">The Washington Post</a>. “We enforce our nation’s laws while also maintaining the dignity of every individual with whom we interact. The words we use matter and will serve to further confer that dignity to those in our custody.”
The acting director of ICE, Tae Johnson, said in a separate memo, “In response to the vision set by the Administration, ICE will ensure agency communications use the preferred terminology and inclusive language.”
On January 18, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/biden-immigration-plan/2021/01/18/f0526824-59a8-11eb-a976-bad6431e03e2_story.html">The Washington Post</a> reported that Biden would be proposing an “overhaul of immigration laws” on his first day in office, as part of a broader strategy to “solve problems of migration” by attacking “the root causes of what causes that migration.”
Biden wants to move the refugee and asylum systems “back to a more humane and orderly process,” according to a Biden official. But “it’s also been made clear that that isn’t a switch you flip overnight from the 19th to the 20th, especially when you’re working with agencies and processes that have been so gutted by the previous administration.”
It appears that part of this process includes a change in vocabulary.
“Immigrant advocates have long condemned the use of the terms as a dehumanizing effort to draw a distinction between immigrants without the means to explore legal avenues of migration,” reported <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/ice-stop-term-illegal-alien-referring-immigrants/story?id=77165043">ABC News</a>.
&#8220;Words matter, and we need to continue to take steps to make sure our policies and our language reflects recognize the vital role of immigrants and immigration to our families, communities and economy,&#8221; said Peter Boogaard, Communications Director at FWD.us.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz slammed the move, describing it as “Orwellian.”
“Approaching his first 100 days in office, Biden has done more to enact speech codes, silence the media &amp; cover up the truth than he has done to secure the border and end the [Biden border crisis],” Cruz tweeted.

Sen. Cruz is correct. This move by the Biden administration does nothing to change policy, and certainly nothing to change the lives of those affected — whether positively or negatively — by illegal immigration.
This is nothing other than a lexicographic version of “papering over the cracks,” engaging in the fantasy that changing our method of describing an act changes the nature of that act. At its very core, this is a lie, and a dangerous one at that.
This linguistic tactic is part of a broader strategy to achieve ideological ends through the control of our very language. There are countless <a href="https://americanmind.org/essays/the-terms-of-our-defeat/">examples</a> of this tactic, including the redefinition of racism to align with the flawed notion of intersectionality, the demand that you prove fealty by chanting “Black Lives Matter” with no regard for its underlying premises or the radical organization it supports, or the assertion that we must “Believe Women” despite the obvious fact that men and women are equally capable of duplicity.
As I <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/haworth-5-ways-orwells-1984-perfectly-describes-the-american-lefts-quest-for-power">noted</a> last year, “The Left understands that achieving full control of language will open the gateway to their subsequent goal of controlling our culture. The generational removal of methods of dissent or disagreement, alongside the subjective redefinition of words for political gain, will be difficult, if not impossible, to undo. For this reason, and this reason alone, the Left focuses on speech more than anything else. ‘Speech is violence’ justifies a violent reaction to speech, until the only speech that remains is deemed politically acceptable.”

Twitter has banned President Donald Trump. Google, Amazon, and Apple shut down Parler, a conservative social media site. No one knows what&#8217;s true or false anymore. And the language police are running rampant, with lawmakers on Capitol Hill going so far as to ban words like &#8220;father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister.&#8221;
So, it makes perfect sense that Orwell&#8217;s famous book &#8220;1984&#8221; is once again the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/best-sellers-books-Amazon/zgbs/books">best-selling book</a> on Amazon.
Orwell, whose real name was Eric Arthur Blair, wrote the book in 1949, his last completed novel before his death.  An opponent of totalitarianism, Orwell served in the Loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War. And as fascism began to sweep the world, he was inspired to write a novel about what would happen should it win.
&#8220;The novel is set in Airstrip One, formerly Great Britain, a province of the superstate Oceania, whose residents are victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. Oceania&#8217;s political ideology, euphemistically named English Socialism (shortened to &#8216;Ingsoc&#8217; in Newspeak, the government&#8217;s invented language that will replace English or Oldspeak) is enforced by the privileged, elite Inner Party,&#8221; Audible says in its summary of the book. &#8220;Via the &#8216;Thought Police,&#8217; the Inner Party persecutes individualism and independent thinking, which are regarded as &#8216;thoughtcrimes.&#8217; The tyranny is ostensibly overseen by a mysterious leader known as Big Brother, who enjoys an intense cult of personality. The Party &#8216;seeks power entirely for its own sake. It is not interested in the good of others; it is interested solely in power.&#8221;
The book&#8217;s &#8220;Big Brother&#8221; is the omnipresent government that sees everything. “Always eyes watching you and the voice enveloping you. Asleep or awake, indoors or out of doors, in the bath or bed—no escape. Nothing was your own except the few cubic centimeters in your skull,&#8221; Orwell wrote.
And Orwell also created &#8220;Newspeak,&#8221; a vocabulary limited by the government and replete with ironies, like the Ministry of Peace, which wages perpetual war, and the Ministry of Plenty, which rations food, not to mention the Ministry of Truth, which controls all information. “Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it,&#8221; Orwell wrote.
The irony that &#8220;1984&#8221; now tops the best-selling book list was not lost on Amazon users, who filled the comment section with insightful remarks.
&#8220;Orwell has always given us thought provoking literature and this is no exception. It seems very appropriate in today&#8217;s ever encroaching government power,&#8221; wrote one user.
&#8220;I can’t believe that his book predicted the events of today so accurately to the point that I am writing this review on a website that actively violates the first amendment via censorship of freedom of speech on sites such as Parler. Absolutely amazing how they do this!&#8221; wrote another.
&#8220;A dystopian future in which a totalitarian regime keeps its citizens under total surveillance,&#8221; wrote a third. &#8220;Thought crime, doublespeak, telescreens, depressingly relevant in an age of fake news, identity politics and social media. A brilliantly depressing read from start to finish.&#8221;
