<p>Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom, is a nationalist whose party won control of the government in November and is in the process of being installed. He is known for his hardline views on immigration and opposition to Islam.</p>
<p>&#8220;I lived in Israel for a while, a long time ago. I&#8217;ve seen it too,&#8221; Wilders said. &#8220;Then it was still from Jordan where the terrorists entered. Hardline Dutch Political Leader Geert Wilders Gives Passionate Defense Of Israel To Parliament

<p>Turkey’s foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, has <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/dutch-elections-netherlands-geert-wilders-freedom-party-turkey-fascist-no-difference-rallies-islam-a7632571.html">claimed</a> that “holy wars will soon begin in Europe.” The minister’s words come just one day after the Dutch elections in which firebrand anti-Islam far-right politician Geert Wilders lost to incumbent Prime Minister Mark Rutte. According to Cavusoglu, the Dutch far-right, center-right, and left are all the same.</p>
<p>“Now the election is over in the Netherlands &#8230; when you look at the many parties you see there is no difference between the social democrats and fascist Wilders,” <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/dutch-elections-netherlands-geert-wilders-freedom-party-turkey-fascist-no-difference-rallies-islam-a7632571.html">said</a> the foreign minister. “All have the same mentality. Where will you go? Where are you taking Europe? You have begun to collapse Europe. You are dragging Europe into the abyss.”</p>
<p>“Holy wars will soon begin in Europe,” he added in an ominous message predicting the collapse of the liberal democratic European project.</p>
<p>As a political ally of Islamist President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Cavusoglu is committed to demonizing the Netherlands following the diplomatic row that erupted after the Dutch government denied entry to Turkish officials who wished to campaign for domestic causes. In fact, over the weekend, Cavusoglu’s own plane was barred from landing in the Netherlands when he made clear that his intentions were to galvanize popular support among Turkish nationals for a Turkish referendum aimed at expanding the powers of dictatorial Islamist President Erdogan.</p>

<p>If the reaction to the verdict finding Netherlands politician Geert Wilders <a href="https://uitspraken.rechtspraak.nl/inziendocument?id=ECLI:NL:RBDHA:2016:15014">guilty</a> of discrimination is any indication, Wilders stands an <a href="http://https://theintercept.com/2016/12/09/conviction-for-racist-speech-could-help-make-geert-wilders-dutch-prime-minister/">excellent chance</a> of becoming the nation&#8217;s next Prime Minister.</p>
<p>Only hours after the verdict was delivered, a poll found 53% percent of the country <a href="https://twitter.com/trias_politica/status/807285723049132033">opposed the ruling</a>. That support for Wilders was apparent even before the verdict; Wilders&#8217; Party for Freedom, (PVV), was leading in the polls in a poll during the trial:</p>

<p>10 parties are currently in the Dutch parliament, and with PPV looking as though it could hold roughly 35 votes, the party could be in charge after next April&#8217;s elections.</p>
<p>The Dutch public expects Wilders to win; after the verdict, <a href="http://www.maurice.nl/beheer/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Veroordeling-Wilders.pdf">more than two-thirds</a> of poll voters surveyed by Dutch pollster Maurice de Hond said they thought PPV would win more seats as a result of the trial.</p>
<p>Dutch pollster Peter Kanne <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/09/world/europe/geert-wilders-netherlands-trial.html">told The New York Times</a>, &#8220;A lot of people mentioned that they&#8217;re really getting angry that he is being accused and judged only for what he said.&#8221;</p>

<p>Wilders released a manifesto back in August delineating the changes he wants to make. It <a href="https://medium.com/@flaviadzodan/be-afraid-geert-wilders-released-his-platform-for-next-years-election-a1ac453a0fff#.jiyk8r39o">reads</a>, in part:</p>

Dutch Politician Wilders’ Conviction For Discrimination May Catapult Him To Leading The Country

<p>On Friday, Dutch MP Geert Wilders, who has taken a strong stand against Muslim immigration to his country, was found <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4016954/Anti-Islam-politician-Geert-Wilders-declares-m-not-racist-nor-voters-convicted-discrimination-against-Moroccans-Holland-trial-BOOSTED-popularity.html">guilty of discrimination</a> against Moroccans, although he was acquitted of hate speech.</p>
<p>The judges wrote, &#8220;The inflammatory character of the way in which the statements were made have incited others to discriminate people of Moroccan origin,&#8221; but ruled that Wilders&#8217; words at an election rally in 2014 did not contain &#8220;sufficient evidence&#8221; for them to be considered hate speech. They added, &#8216;In this case, the most important question is whether Wilders has crossed a line. This judgment has answered that question. The chamber finds that justice has been done. Consequently, no punishment is imposed.&#8217;</p>
<p>The prosecution wanted Wilders to pay a 5,000 euro fine; that was dismissed by the judges. Wilders immediately said he would appeal the decision.</p>
<p>Wilders&#8217; Freedom Party (PVV) is poised to make significant gains in the March 2017 election, possibly even running the government, as the most recent polls show the party grabbing 34 of the 150 seats in the lower house of Dutch parliament, roughly 10 more than the closest group, Prime Minister Mark Rutte&#8217;s Liberals. What is truly unique about the PVV is this, <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-38253122">according to political scientist Andre Krouwel</a>: &#8220;The PVV has no party organization or local branches, no member or activist base, he is the only member of the party.&#8221;</p>
<p>The trial was based on statements from a 2014 local government election rally in The Hague, when Wilders asked the crowd if they wanted &#8220;fewer or more Moroccans in your city and in the Netherlands.&#8221; The crowd responded &#8220;Fewer! Fewer!&#8221; That prompted Wilders&#8217; reply: &#8220;We&#8217;re going to organize that.&#8221;</p>
<p>The judges stated, &#8220;Wilders singled out an entire group of citizens without making any distinction. This group has less rights to reside in the Netherlands. Therewith, this statement can be regarded as affecting the dignity of this group as a whole. It is insulting for the entire group.&#8221;</p>
<p>Wilders has promised to confiscate Korans, close mosques and Islamic schools, shut Dutch borders and bar migrants from Islamic countries from migrating to The Netherlands.</p>
<p>ISIS and Al-Qaeda have threatened him with death, causing him to be guarded at all times. When the BBC interviewed supporters of the PVV, it asked them why they supported Wilders. The <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-38253122">BBC wrote</a>: &#8220;All of them speak of a loss of faith in the mainstream, of broken promises and politically correct tip-toeing around the real issues affecting their lives, primarily radical Islam, immigration and the influence of the EU.&#8221;</p>
