“<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/game-of-thrones">Game of Thrones</a>” actor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">Kit Harington</a> weighed in on the controversial final season of the hit <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hbo">HBO series</a>, saying he agreed with some of the criticism voiced by fans. 
“I think if there was any fault with the end of Thrones, is that we were all so f***ing tired, we couldn’t have gone on longer,” the 37-year-old said in a recent <a href="https://www.gq.com/story/kit-harington-gq-hype">interview</a> with GQ Hype. “And so I understand some people thought it was rushed and I might agree with them. But I’m not sure there was any alternative. I look at pictures of me in that final season and I look exhausted. I look spent. I didn’t have another season in me.”
Harington played the character Jon Snow, who was thought to be a bastard but turns out to be the secret love child of royalty in the series. 
“Everyone is entitled to their opinion,” he told the outlet. “I think there were mistakes made, story-wise, towards the end maybe. I think there were some interesting choices that didn’t quite work.”

Fans complained that the last season of “Game of Thrones” felt rushed and lacked the character development and emotional depth of previous seasons, which is part of what made the series so popular. Viewers were also disappointed with the resolutions for most characters, including Harrington&#8217;s Jon Snow.
There were rumors of a spinoff featuring Jon Snow, which Harington also discussed during the GQ interview.
“What I can tell you is it was HBO that came to me and said, ‘Would you consider this?’ My first reaction was no,” the actor explained. “And then I thought there could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war. I felt that there might be something left to say and a story left to tell in a pretty limited way.”
Harington said they “spent a couple of years back and forth developing” the series, but “nothing got us excited enough.”
“In the end, I kind of backed out and said, ‘I think if we push this any further and keep developing it we could end up with something that’s not good. And that’s the last thing we all want,&#8217;” the actor concluded.

“<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/game-of-thrones">Game of Thrones</a>” star Emilia Clarke said she worried she could be fired after sustaining a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/medical">brain injury</a> while working on the hit HBO drama series. 
The 37-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">actress</a> discussed her thoughts while speaking with the U.K.-based Big Issue in an <a href="https://www.bigissue.com/culture/emilia-clarke-brain-injury-sameyou-game-of-thrones/">article</a> published Monday.
“When you have a brain injury, because it alters your sense of self on such a dramatic level, all of the insecurities you have going into the workplace quadruple overnight,” Clarke told the outlet. 
“The first fear we all had was: ‘Oh my God, am I going to get fired? Am I going to get fired because they think I’m not capable of completing the job?’” she said.
The actress mentioned how the brain aneurysm occurred during a break in filming and said only certain crew and cast members were aware of what was going on. Clarke recalled thinking about how the stress of returning to the set could trigger another medical issue.
She said her thought was, “Well, if I’m going to die, I better die on live TV.”
The “Game of Thrones” actress founded a charity to develop better mental health support for people who had been through similar experiences. 
“Having a chronic condition that diminishes your confidence in this one thing you feel is your reason to live is so debilitating and so lonely,” Clarke said. “One of the biggest things I felt with a brain injury was profoundly alone. That is what we’re trying to overcome.”

During the interview, she also discussed feeling how she “couldn’t carry on” following the brain injury. She said she instructed medical staff to let her die because she believed her acting days were over. Now, she sees enduring the event as a positive.
“It has given me a superpower,” Clarke said.
The actress had her first aneurysm, which caused a stroke and a subarachnoid hemorrhage, in 2011. She discussed the experience in a personal <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/culture/personal-history/emilia-clarke-a-battle-for-my-life-brain-aneurysm-surgery-game-of-thrones">essay</a> published in The New Yorker in 2019.
&#8220;I was suffering from a condition called aphasia, a consequence of the trauma my brain had suffered,&#8221; she said at the time.
&#8220;In my worst moments, I wanted to pull the plug,&#8221; Clarke added. &#8220;I asked the medical staff to let me die. My job — my entire dream of what my life would be — centered on language, on communication. Without that, I was lost.&#8221;
The aphasia was temporary, and eventually, the actress was able to speak again. Clarke had a second surgery on another aneurysm in 2013.

A London play starring “Game of Thrones” star Kit Harrington will host two performances where only black audience members, or those identifying as black, will be permitted to view the play, “free from the white gaze.”
“Slave Play,” which received 12 Tony nominations in 2021, but won no awards, will run at the Noël Coward theater in London&#8217;s West End from June 29 to September 21 and feature performances on July 17 and September 17 with “Black Out nights.”
“Blackout nights are the purposeful creation of an environment in which an all-Black-identifying audience can experience and discuss an event in the performing arts, film, athletic and cultural spaces — free from the white gaze,” the theater noted.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-68440104" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released a statement</a> saying, “The prime minister is a big supporter of the arts and he believes that the arts should be inclusive and open to everyone, particularly where those arts venues are in receipt of public funding. Restricting audiences on the basis of race would be wrong and divisive.”
“I understand the subject matter of the show may have particular resonance for some but would simply question the legality of this? In other circles it would be illegal and racial discrimination. I don&#8217;t understand why this isn&#8217;t,” one member of Parliament told <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13130911/West-End-tells-white-theatregoers-arent-welcome-hosts-black-audience-nights-Kit-Harrington-play-protect-ticketholders-white-gaze.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Mail.</a>
The play’s producers told The BBC the “intent is to celebrate the play with the widest possible audience. We want to increase accessibility to theatre for everyone.&#8221;
&#8220;The Broadway production conceived of Black Out nights and we are carefully considering how to incorporate this endeavour as part of two performances in our 13-week run. We will release further details soon. To be absolutely clear, no-one will be prevented or precluded from attending any performance of Slave Play.&#8221;
Playwright Jeremy O. Harris told BBC Sounds:

“There are a litany of places in our country that are generally only inhabited by white people, and nobody is questioning that, and nobody is saying that by inviting black audiences here you are uninvited,” he continued. “The idea of a Black Out night is to say this is a night that we are specifically inviting black people to fill up the space, to feel safe with a lot of other black people in a place where they often do not feel safe.”
The play itself focuses on three modern-day interracial couples who attempt to mend tensions in their relationships by engaging in &#8220;antebellum sexual-performance therapy,&#8221; <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/09/25/jeremy-o-harris-before-and-after-slave-play">according</a> to The New Yorker. The black characters in the play no longer experience pleasure in their relationships with their white partners and attempt to recapture it through the racially-charged sexual roleplaying.

Australian <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">actress</a> Milly Alcock, best known for starring in HBO’s “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/game-of-thrones">Game of Thrones</a>” prequel spinoff series “House of the Dragon,” has been named as <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/comics">DC Universe</a>’s new Supergirl.
The 23-year-old played the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on the show. Alcock was nominated for a Critics&#8217; Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work on &#8220;HOTD.&#8221; Now she’ll become an even bigger household name starring as the iconic superhero in the first <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/movies">film project</a> spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran for the DC Universe (DCU), per <a href="https://deadline.com/2024/01/supergirl-milly-alcock-1235807989/">Deadline</a>.
“This is accurate. Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU,” Gunn <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C2s_DqNvqHL/">confirmed</a> on Instagram. “Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl,” he continued. “She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk and @bliquis and Ana Noguiera.”
Other contenders for the coveted role included “CODA” star Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly, who voiced Supergirl in the DC animated movies “Legion of Superheroes” and “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One,” the outlet noted.
Rumor has it that Supergirl could have a cameo in the upcoming DC film “Superman Legacy,” but that’s so far unconfirmed. The first project Alcock will definitely star in is the upcoming “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which was announced last year. The storyline will be based on Yom King’s 2022 comic book series.

Gunn told Deadline of this Supergirl version, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
Alcock made her screen debut as a teenager in Australia, appearing in commercials before transitioning to various TV projects. “House of the Dragon” was her big break into Hollywood.

“<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/game-of-thrones">Game of Thrones</a>” star Kit Harington recently discussed &#8220;psychological scarring&#8221; and how becoming famous affected his life.
The 37-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">actor</a> detailed how he became dependent on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alcohol">alcohol</a> while starring in the hit HBO series. Harington shared details as part of an upcoming episode of the podcast “The Hidden 20%.” 
“People would treat me like the character. But in my life I didn&#8217;t feel like that at all. And that [led me to] some psychological scarring,” he said of his time playing the “Game of Thrones” character Jon Snow from 2011 until 2019. 
Because fans expected him to be like the character he played, Harington <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/game-of-thrones-news/kit-harington-game-of-thrones-fame-mental-health-rabbit-hole">said</a> he tried “to project this image of utter sophistication and coolness about what I was doing but genuinely being sort of terrified about everything.”
“That is a dangerous rabbit hole to fall down because you find all of the bad stuff that people are saying as well as the nice stuff,” he added.
Harington said he entered treatment for alcoholism right after the show ended and wound up getting diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), per <a href="https://deadline.com/2024/01/game-of-thrones-actor-kit-harington-opens-up-about-mental-health-struggles-1235786247/">Deadline</a>.
“I realized that my life was hinging on this,” he told podcast host Ben Branson. “Luckily, it was the right place at the right time. I managed to forge a new life from there.”
Harington said his first rehab wasn’t a fit. He <a href="https://deadline.com/2024/01/game-of-thrones-actor-kit-harington-opens-up-about-mental-health-struggles-1235786247/">explained</a> that he “entered rehab drunk, sobered up in there, and went, ‘F*** this, not you guys in a circle. No, thank you.’”

His next experience at a treatment center was better and was where he got diagnosed with ADHD. “And I left that pretty quick and said, ‘I’ll try to deal with this by myself,’ which didn’t work after about four years,” Harington added. 
Now the actor spends most of his time with his family, including former “Game of Thrones” co-star Rose Leslie, whom he married in 2018, and his two young children. 
“My head wants to go to every other thing in the room at once,” he said of family time, saying that even though he is “sober” and present” at home, he sometimes gets “restless” while playing with his children.

The “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/game-of-thrones" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Game of Thrones</a>” alum filed a lawsuit in a Manhattan court on Thursday, per <a href="https://people.com/sophie-turner-sues-joe-jonas-demands-kids-be-returned-to-england-amid-split-7972708" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People magazine,</a> demanding that the former couple’s two children, Willa and a 14-month-old identified as D, be returned to England.
The document asks for &#8220;the immediate return of children wrongfully removed or wrongfully retained&#8221; for what is being called &#8220;wrongful retention,&#8221; which began September 20. The outlet noted how Turner referred to England as their “forever home” in late 2022. 
Jonas and Turner purchased a home there in April 2023 in anticipation of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/entertainment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">actress</a> working on the miniseries “Joan,” which was filmed over this summer.
Court docs state that they agreed that the children would go on tour with Jonas since he would have more daytime hours available to spend with them, but Turner said she had “hesitation” about that “temporary arrangement.” 
Turner also alleged that their divorce came about “very suddenly” after an argument. She claims to have found out Jonas filed for the dissolution of their marriage &#8220;from the media.&#8221;
“The Father has possession of the children’s passports. He refuses to return the passports to the Mother and refuses to send the children home to England with the Mother,&#8221; the documents say. Jonas’ attorney confirmed to Turner’s team that he had the passports and would not surrender them, nor would he agree for the children to move to England.

“Statement from the two of us: ‘After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,’” it said, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sophie-turner-and-joe-jonas-post-statement-on-divorce-news-a-united-decision" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. 
“There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,&#8217;” the post concluded.
An unnamed source told People at the time that Jonas and Turner had been having marital issues for months and spent “the whole summer” living “apart.”
The source added that they “haven’t gotten along in a while, but they’re hoping to resolve this all amicably.”

Jonas, 34, filed documents to end his marriage to 27-year-old former “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/game-of-thrones">Game of Thrones</a>” actress in a Miami courthouse on Tuesday. They have two young children together: Willa, 3, and a second daughter who was named in the documents as D.J. She was born in July 2022.

Fans noticed that Jonas had posted a photo of himself prominently wearing his wedding ring as divorce rumors heated up earlier in the week, but by Tuesday the couple’s split was confirmed. An unnamed source told <a href="https://people.com/joe-jonas-sophie-turner-break-silence-divorce-statement-7965970" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People</a> that Jonas and Turner had been experiencing trouble for months and spent “the whole summer” living “apart.”

The couple also signed a prenup and Jonas reportedly has asked that prenuptial agreement signed in April 2019 be upheld, NBC News noted. The singer also requested joint custody of their two daughters.

There’s going to be another “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/game-of-thrones" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Game of Thrones</a>” spinoff coming to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/television" target="_blank" rel="noopener">television</a>.
Warner Bros. Discovery made an announcement confirming the prequel during a media event on Wednesday. This prequel, currently called “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight,” is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Dunk and Egg” books.
The newly merged company also announced that the combined <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hbo-max" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HBO Max</a> and Discovery+ streaming service would be known as Max going forward, per <a href="https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/game-of-thrones-prequel-series-a-knight-of-the-seven-kingdoms-hbo-1235578466/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Variety</a>.
This newest spinoff will follow the story of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg), which takes place 90 years before the events of “A Song of Ice and Fire,” which is the series that provided the storyline for “Game of Thrones.” 
The official project logline says: “A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
The publication noted that Martin would serve as writer and executive producer. Ira Parker, who was a co-executive producer on Season 1 of “House of the Dragon,” is also part of the project.
“Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon” alums Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis will be executive producers on the new prequel series.
This is one of many “Game of Thrones” spinoffs currently in the works, but the only one besides “House of the Dragon” that’s been confirmed. &#8220;HOTD&#8221; launched in August 2022 and was renewed for a second season, which is currently in production.

In 2021, HBO and HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys said future “Game of Thrones” spinoff shows would be decided based on which stories had the strongest content. 
“Obviously, we know George has this incredible world with all of this really rich and complicated history and all of these characters,” Bloys <a href="https://tvline.com/2021/01/21/game-of-thrones-dunk-and-egg-prequel-series-spinoff-hbo/">told</a> TVLine at the time. “So we’ve been trying to be thoughtful about what are the stories that are worth telling. What would be exciting? What would fans love?” he said. “Dunk and Egg is one of those, but not the only one.”
“We’ll let the creative dictate where we end up,” the network exec said.

Famed rock musician Wilko Johnson, who played guitar with the group Dr. Feelgood and later had a part in the TV series “Game of Thrones,” died on Monday at the age of 75 after a remarkable battle fighting pancreatic cancer.
As far back as 2012, Johnson, whose <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBBfVBqQif8">choppy style of playing the guitar</a> became famous, was diagnosed as terminal and told he would live less than a year, but he later had a huge six-pound tumor removed and was termed “cancer free.”
“This is the announcement we never wanted to make, &amp; we do so with a very heavy heart: Wilko Johnson has died,” Johnson’s Twitter feed posted on Wednesday morning. “He passed away at home on Monday 21st November. Thank you for respecting the family&#8217;s privacy at this very sad time. RIP Wilko Johnson.”

At the time of Johnson’s terminal cancer diagnosis, his manager, Robert Hoy <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-11461117/Wilko-Johnson-dies-aged-75-following-pancreatic-cancer-battle.html">stated,</a> “He said he wants to make the very best of the time he has left, playing and partying when he can. He is currently in good spirits and is not yet suffering any physical effects and can expect to enjoy at least another few months of reasonable health and activity.”
In 2013, Johnson <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/wilko-johnson-game-thrones-actor-dr-feelgood-guitarist-dies-75-rcna58518">told AP</a>, “I suddenly found myself in a position where nothing matters anymore. I’m a miserable so-and-so normally &#8230; I’d be worrying about the taxman or all the things that we worry about that get in the way of the real things. And suddenly it doesn’t matter. All of that doesn’t matter.
He added, “You walk down the street and you feel intensely alive. You’re &#8216;Oh, look at that leaf!&#8217; You’re looking around and you think, ‘I’m alive. Ain’t it amazing?’”
“That year thinking my life was at an end was one of the greatest years of my life,” Johnson recalled in 2017. “The way I handled it was at all times to understand. ‘Yes, I&#8217;m gonna die’ but don&#8217;t sit there wishing you aren&#8217;t gonna die because we&#8217;re all gonna die. I never felt self-pity. I was never in tears all that time.”
“Looking out at thousands and thousands of people [at Fuji Rock in Japan] and they all know you&#8217;re gonna die&#8230; oh man. I&#8217;m gonna die, but it&#8217;s alright. What a high,” he continued, adding, “It&#8217;s hard to know there are people suffering from cancer who don&#8217;t survive, and then me.”
Johnson appeared with Dr. Feelgood on various albums, including “Down by the Jetty,” “Malpractice,” “Sneakin&#8217; Suspicion,” and “Stupidity.” He later created the band Solid Senders before joining The Blockheads.
Johnson later played silent executioner Ser Ilyn Payne on “Game of Thrones.”

The most shocking thing about the most graphic birth scene on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” is that it wasn’t shocking at all.
Showrunners have spent the entire first season of the drama vilifying motherhood and making childbirth a bloody, torturous affair that frequently ended in death. It’s not that these assertions about birth before modern medicine are incorrect – it’s just notable that series creators did little to balance out that narrative with scenes of women delivering their children without a heaping side of trauma.
<h3>Rhaenyra Delivers Her Stillborn Child</h3>
The “HOTD” series finale features the Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) being thrust into preterm labor moments after hearing that her ailing father, King Viserys (Paddy Considine), recently died. Rhaenyra’s stepmother and former friend Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) then had her son crowned king despite the fact that Viserys had named Rhaenyra his heir years before.
Rhaenyra labored alone while her terrified handmaidens stood nearby, begging to help her. She paced the room while screaming for her husband Daemon (Matt Smith) to come help her. But he’s too busy preparing to go to war with the traitors who stole the Iron Throne.
Eventually, Rhaenyra gave birth to a deceased newborn on the floor and the showrunners make no effort to cut away from the horrifying moment. Viewers clearly saw the newborn’s tiny, bloodied feet and her head hitting the hard floor as Rhaenyra pushed out her silent child. It’s a graphic scene that could have easily been a lot more subtle and still gotten the point across.
But again, this is par for the course for “House of the Dragon.”
<h3>The Show’s First Birth Was A ‘Bloodbath’</h3>
In the very first episode, fans were disturbed to witness Rhaenyra’s mother Queen Aemma (Sian Brooke), die during childbirth after her husband Viserys allowed an emergency c-section that he knew would kill his wife but could potentially save his unborn son.
This so-called “forced birth” scene was considered by many to be a statement against pro-life laws that limit women’s access to abortion.
“Yes it’s accurate in terms of historical context, but it’s still horrifying to see, &amp; doesn’t take away the point that she still should have had a choice about her own body,” one Twitter user <a href="https://twitter.com/FrankieT96/status/1561719699418890245" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shared</a> of Aemma’s death during childbirth. “Very timely given Roe vs Wade &amp; how despite modern medicine, we’re still told what to do with our bodies.”
Brooke discussed filming the scene during an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-of-the-dragon-fans-erupt-over-forced-birth-scene-in-explosive-premiere" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with Variety. “It was a bloodbath,” the actress recalled. “Behind that belly was a whole bag full of blood and fluid. When the incision was made, they would have to time it with pumping this blood out of the belly.”
She said the fake blood was “cold and wet, seeping all over” and that the set “looked like a horror movie” after filming concluded.
The actress also addressed the connection between the c-section and abortion. “When we filmed it, it obviously didn’t cross my mind because it hadn’t happened,” Brooke said of Roe v. Wade being overturned in June.
“Now, you realize how shocking that is, that comparisons can be made between present day, and a woman’s body and the right to choose what happens to her body, and thousands of years ago,” Brooke continued. “I just think the fact that we’re even talking about it, is evident in itself. It’s very poignant what can happen within a year, and how far we can step back.”
<h3>Birth Is A Battlefield</h3>
During an interview with <a href="https://www.insider.com/house-of-the-dragon-birth-scene-too-violent-shown-to-women-2022-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Insider</a>, “House of the Dragon” showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal discussed the controversial birth scene, saying they wanted to portray birth as a “battlefield.”
Sapochnik said they ran the scene by “as many women as possible,” who all agreed it wasn’t “too violent.” He also declared that they “shouldn’t be shying away” from Aemma dying so brutally.
“As we stated earlier in the episode, the birthing bed is almost a battlefield,” the showrunner said. “You have 50 percent chance of survival. And so it seemed like this was an appropriate time to draw that parallel visually between the male and the female struggle. One’s fighting on the battlefield, the other’s fighting for survival — sometimes from the person closest to her.”
<h3>Laena Chooses To Be Burned Alive</h3>
Those two deadly births weren’t the only ones on the series. In episode 6 “The Princess and the Queen,” Daemon’s then-wife Laena went into labor but it quickly became clear the baby wouldn&#8217;t come out. Daemon was presented with an impossible choice just like his older brother Viserys – he’s told he can try to save the baby by permitting a c-section for Laena, or lose them both from failed labor. But he doesn’t have to make the choice after all.
Before Daemon can answer, Laena got up and walked outside to her dragon Vhagar. The desperate mother stood in front of the dragon and gave the command, “Dracarys!” Vhagar obeyed by breathing fire that burned both Laena and her unborn child alive.
<h3>Motherhood Is Shown As Joyless</h3>
It’s not just childbirth that’s portrayed as a death sentence, or worse, on the “Game of Thrones” spinoff prequel. Motherhood overall is shown as a heavy, joyless burden throughout the series.
For example, there’s the comparison of two chosen paths during episode 4, “King of the Narrow Sea.” In it, young Princess Rhaenyra shrugged off a bevy of potential suitors, then sneaked out into the town after dark for a night out with her mischievous uncle Daemon, who she’ll eventually wed. The two visited a sex club and exchanged an awkward moment where they almost gave in to their desire for each other.
Icky as they may be, these scenes are shown as exhilarating coming-of-age moments for teenage Rhaenyra. Snippets of the princess sneaking out for a good time are juxtaposed with images of her childhood friend Alicent, who chose the path of duty and became queen by marrying Rhaenyra’s father Viserys. While Rhaenyra has fun, Alicent joylessly holds a screaming baby and looks all the part of an exhausted mother.
The implication of these scenes is clear: getting married and having babies is dull, while exploring sex clubs with your creepy uncle is thrilling. Never mind the fact that as queen, Alicent had all the nannies she could want at her beck and call. Showrunners were clearly trying to show who chose the better path.
There’s no denying that childbirth was more dangerous before the advent of modern medicine and life-saving options including medicated c-sections. But for a popular series to portray childbirth as a likely death sentence feels intentional during the current culture war, which seeks to turn mothers against their own flesh and blood.
